Official Newsletter of Division 8 of the New Jersey District of Key Club International

Notes from your LTG! Hello Division 8! I cannot believe how fast this year has been going! We are rapidly approaching our annual NJ District Convention where I will, unfortunately, have to say goodbye as your LTG and to Key Club as I graduate and move on to college. To all the other seniors in Division 8, you know my struggle. There is a large sadness, for having to say goodbye to Key Club, old friends, and familiarity. Diving into the unknown can be intimidating and frightening. My advice is to treat it like your first convention. Use the opportunity to make new friends and experience new things. To all the underclassmen in our Division, you all still have time left to impact your home, school, and community! Consider running for a club or district office, and begin to

implement the change you wish to see in world. Even if you don’t want to run for office, you can still be an active member and help so many people in your community and around the world! This issue of my newsletter is going to be jam packed with information about upcoming events and past events and all the happenings in our lovely New Jersey District, so please read through it so you are able to participate in all of the crazy events we have planned for the remainder of our service year! Yours in caring and service,

The 2014-2015 Division 9 LTG! On January 23, 2014, delegates from the clubs in our division gathered at the Shrewsbury library to elect the next Lieutenant Governor of our mighty division! “But Adam,” you say in defiance, “that cannot possibly be right! We are a part of division 8!” Alas, you are in fact mistaken. Starting at the end of DCON 2014, when are new elect is installed as the LTG, and I am removed, we will be renamed Division 9. What does this mean for us as a

division? Not much really, the clubs all remain the same, and our spirit will shine through no matter what! As for cheers at DCON? Well, I think we should try out “9 is fine!” I think it will be a lovely new substitute for “8 is great!” Without further ado, however, I would like to officially announce Tara Engelken as our LTG-Elect for the upcoming year! She is a junior at MAST and I have complete confidence she will do an amazing job next year!

Divisional News We are Canada! Key Club International truly is an international organization, with branches in over 30 nations across the globe! This year’s annual District Convention theme is “Destination: Service”. As such, each division has been assigned a country to represent them at the convention. This will be the identifier for where to sit during convention and such, but I think we as division can take it one step further! During convention try and bring out your inner Canadian! Try wearing some red and white throughout the convention and showing your divisional pride!

2

Also, throughout the convention if you hear someone shout, “Canada, how do you feel?!” you should be ready to hop out of your seat and scream, “WE FEEL GOOD, OH WE FEEL SO GOOD!” or something along those lines! A large part of convention is how much spirit each division can show throughout the length of the convention (much like Fall Rally). Every year the divisions out do themselves in order to win the spirit stick, and I think this year our division can be the loudest, proudest, and most spirited in the mighty, mighty New Jersey District!

Tara and I after her election!

68th Annual District Convention On March 28th, hundreds of Key Clubbers from all over the New Jersey District will gather at the Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch to celebrate the 2013-2014 service year, and ring in the 2014-2015 year! Over the course of two days you will discover the full breadth of Key Club at its District, and even international levels! Listen to invigorating speakers, as well as cheer on your favorite candidates running for executive offices! Each night dress yourself up for the amazing dances that are held, where you can bid to dance with your favorite board member, or just dance the night away

with your friends! Also throughout convention, attend workshops that will teach you all about different aspects of Key Club! There are even theme related workshops! How do you go about attending this amazing event? Well, start off by talking to your club advisor! Talk to them about the amazing leadership and educational opportunities this event affords you as a high school student! Then, complete the Registration packet (your advisor should have it, or you can email me and I will absolutely email you a copy!

District News Dance and Shake to ELIMINATE This past Saturday, February 1, 2014, was the first in a series of three District Dances, known as Dance and Shake to ELIMINATE. What is this you may ask? Well, Dance and Shake is a dance that is being held at three locations throughout the district, where Key Clubbers can come and enjoy some great times with people from all over! On Saturday Key Clubbers and members of the District Board gathered at Theodore Schor Middle School in Piscataway, NJ for our first event, which was from 6-10 PM. We all got to dance and make new friends, and a little later in the evening we decided to place large games to involve everyone and make new friends. From a game of musical chairs, to a game called “The Great Wind Blows”, you would be hardpressed to find someone who didn’t enjoy themselves that night. Does this sound like an event that piques your interest? Well, on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 6-9 PM at a northern location in NJ, you can take part in the next dance! For a $10 donation to the ELIMINATE Project, you get to come and make some great memories and enjoy some great music! So please come on down and dance and shake your way to eliminating Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus from the world!

Registration costs for the 2014 Annual District Convention are as follows: If your club registers by February 14, 2014 the prices are $255 per Key Clubber and either $280 or $335 per chaperone, depending on the room they want. If you register after February 14, 2014 the prices are $260 per Key Clubber and either $285 or $340 per chaperone, depending on the room they want. The final deadline for registration is March 6, 2014.

Convention Notes

Do you think you have what it takes to be named the most talented Key Clubber in the NJ District? Well at DCON 2014 you can show us all! The sign – up list is going to be located on the registration table!

There are many scholarships awarded at DCON every year! The best part is they are open to all high school seniors in Key Club! Just fill out the scholarships flyer that came out in the last District Mailing!

ELIMINATE shakers! Decorate and bring baby bottles to Convention to collect change to donate throughout the weekend! They can also double as a noisemaker during appropriate sessions!

REMINDER! Annual Achievement Report Forms are due by March 1st! This is required for all clubs, but especially if you want to compete in any contests throughout convention!

Convention 2014 News A Message from the Future! After attending the 2013 District Convention, I am extremely excited to go this year, especially as a Lieutenant Governor Elect! Last year I remember looking at the Executive Officers and the Lieutenant Governors up in the stands during the Keynote Sessions. I thought that it would be amazing to be a Lieutenant Governor but I never imagined that this year I would be put into the position at District Convention! I cannot wait to see how the theme Destination Service turns out this year, I have no doubt that it will be a huge success! It’s pretty unbelievable to think that last year I attended DCON as a general member and this year I’m attending as the Lieutenant Governor Elect of Division 9. -Tara Engelken, LTG-Elect of Division 9

District Advocacy Project! As you all know and have probably heard a thousand times being in Key Club, advocacy is speaking on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. Every year, the NJ District comes up with an advocacy focus that we are to concentrate on for the duration of each service year. This year, we chose Chronic and Mental Illness. Each of you has been receiving Service Directory flyers, each focusing on a different chronic and mental illness. The NJDB is asking that each club participates in a "Day of Service," which includes spending one day advocating for a chronic or mental illness of their choice. This can include putting up flyers with facts about the illness, reading a short blurb about it on the morning announcements, or having the whole school where the 'color' of that illness. The possibilities are endless. Please host a day of service for your club by the end of the 2013-2014 Service Year ending with DCON 2014. Thank you all much and keep on serving! -Sarah McGuire, LTG Division 21
