What’s the big picture? Who do you think you are? What’s your core message? What do you need to know? Who do you need to become?

No matter what source you reference, it is an established fact that 80-90% of all business in the United States is “small business”. While big corporations are merging and the next great technoloy company is going public, true innovation is coming from individuals with vision. Yet, the plight of the entrepreneur is often fatal–with failure as the norm. According to the Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) in Washington, DC in their 2011 “Power of One in Three” Report: •

Just over 5% of all businesses generate annual sales greater than $1 million. For women, Latinos, and Native Americans, the rate falls to only 2%. For Black business owners, the rate is under 1% (Survey of Business Owners 2007) The odds that a Black business owner in the U.S. will have annual revenues of less than $100,000 are almost 20% higher than for peers. (Survey of Business Owners 2007) A female business owner in the Pacific Northwest has only a 14% chance of generating $100,000 in annual sales–the highest odds compared to women in other regions of the country. (Survey of Business Owners 2007) There are over 40 million people living at or below the poverty line for whom selfemployment is likely to be their most viable economic option. (US Census Bureau)

AEO’s assessment was that main street business owners have an availability, access, and impact problem. The services they need must be more readily available. They need access to capital and opportunities. And solving the first two problems will cause these business owners to have more impact in the marketplace. At Vivid Brands, as entrepreneurs ourselves, we believe that the first solution to these problems is vision, and that is the foundation of our editorial strategy.
