WELCOME TO THE 12TH ANNUAL ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL Quirky and unique, the art form of cabaret has created a safe haven for those artists who generally escape definition, artists who enjoy the “up close and personal nature of a live audience and who thrive on the challenge of presenting work that provokes and inspires. Adelaide Cabaret Festival has an outstanding reputation both locally and internationally, proof of the amount of time and passion poured into it since its inception. To all my predecessors I tip my hat. This year artists from around the world have been invited to Adelaide to disturb us, provoke us, be wild and fabulous. As a result we have gathered a diverse bunch of charismatic raconteurs, entrancing musicians and Broadway chanteuses. Some Cabaret Festival favourites return with their latest offerings and we will be introducing a new guard of cabaret artists. The cabaret atmosphere will also be amplified with acclaimed artist David Bromley as Festival Designer. You are warmly invited to join us to explore the extraordinary.... Love Kate

“BEYOND VIRTUOSITY TO THE SUBLIME.” The Australian
A Melbourne Theatre Company Production
TOUCHING AND HILARIOUS MUSICAL THEATRE Following sell-out seasons in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, Songs For Nobodies written by Joanna Murray–Smith, directed by Simon Phillips and starring Bernadette Robinson comes to Her Majesty’s Theatre for a strictly limited season. In this critically acclaimed one-woman show Robinson plays the role of five ordinary women: each tells the tale of how their lives were transformed when they cross paths with some of the most iconic women singers of the Twentieth Century: Judy Garland, Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf and Maria Callas. With phenomenal control of tone and accent, Robinson seamlessly brings to life each “nobody” and each legendary singer.

the suitcase royale in the ballad of backbone joe MACABRE CHARACTERS RELIVE TALES OF HILARITY This internationally acclaimed trio from Melbourne return to Adelaide riding a murder ballad of junkyard theatre, visual trickery, dark humor and rag'n'bone live music. The Ballad of Backbone Joe tells a hilariously daft and gruesome tale of a murder set in a small country town, cooked up the way only The Suitcase Royale lads can.
troy cassar-dalEy A LIFE’S STORy in song Since his first guitar lesson at ten years old, Troy Cassar-Daley has lived his life through song. Having travelled many miles to amazing places meeting amazing people, Troy has gathered a wealth of inspiration into his heart. Troy shares the songs that have shaped his life as a person and a musician. These are stories about the lives lived in this big brown land. Songs that offer hope in times of doubt, opened doors when all seemed closed and brought light when everything seemed dark. A SUPERLATIVE STORYTELLER

David Bromley Exhibition One of the most successful and innovative painters currently working in Australia. In his art Bromley has managed to combine a distinctive Pop sensibility – a love of found images, photographic sources and mass media references – with an inventive relish for the effects of paint. His work divides into two distinct but related strands: images of childhood (adapted from the world of 1950s book illustrations) and images of the female nude. Bromley is also increasingly in demand as a portraitist. He has been a finalist six times in the Archibald Prize and the painter of some famous visages, including filmmaker Scott Hicks, actor Hugo Weaving and pop-star Kylie Minogue. Displaying an extraordinary artistic energy he has experimented with a wide variety of different media – printmaking, ceramic, sculpture and, more recently, film, furniture, fashion and interiors. An Aboriginal elder who pioneered Koorie theatre in the early 1970s, Uncle Jack founded the first Aboriginal theatre company in Australia, Nindethana. He was a television regular and the star of Australian films including The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith. Jack is an actor, musician, potter and gifted performer, but in his nearly 70 years he has also been homeless, an addict, a thief and a regular in Victoria’s prisons. Jack is no longer caught in the cycle of addiction, crime and doing time. Backed by a three piece band, Jack performs songs from his widely acclaimed theatre show Jack Charles V The Crown. An engaging evening of songs from Jack’s 1940s childhood through to a blues version of Oodgeroo Noonuccal’s poem Son of Mine. THE ENDURING CHARISMA OF UNCLE JACK IS SIMPLY SUBLIME

AN INGENIOUS TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC OF THE 80S
Go back to the early 80s when records rule the radio and groupies flock to gigs to fall for their idols. A bastard child follows his mother in the shadow of rock’n’roll where the men at the mic become the father he never had. Multi-award winning down and dirty artist Tommy Bradson presents a love song to his mother, to Oz and to the men his mother loved. Featuring re-imagined golden gems from Cold Chisel, INXS, Nick Cave and Australian Crawl. John Thorn – Pianist/Musical Director

men of substance AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE MUSICAL COMEDY TRIO
Are they boys? Men? Men’s men? Or ladyboys? Tripod have become stars of radio, TV, and the stage by pretending to be stupid albeit in glorious three-part harmony. In Men of Substance they decide it’s time to grow up. Armed with tattered wisdom, cheap scotch and unlicensed firearms, Tripod bring to bear their hard-earned cabaret chops to show you how and in what way the once scorching charismageddon of the new generation have morphed into craggy fugitives with a suitcase of regrets and a glass eye.

Acclaimed UK comedian, actor, writer, TV presenter, radio host and all-round Renaissance man Lenny Henry returns to his roots with a funky, funny and personal one man show, Cradle to Rave, about the thing he loves most: music. Cradle to Rave is Henry’s most personal show yet, offering a hilarious and touching insight into a man to whom music matters a little too much. From growing up thinking Elvis was a relative, as there were so many pictures of him in the house, to missing a cue during his theatrical debut as Othello because he was listening to hip hop, Cradle to Rave sets Henry’s family, first loves and fame against a musical backdrop – a comic cabaret voyage through his life told via its eclectic soundtrack. Directed by Richard Wilson, Cradle to Rave is Henry’s musical journey from fan boy to the greatest singer the UK never had. A WELL-TUNED CABARET COMEDY
