Artists from as far afield as New York, London, Paris and Berlin and from as close to home as Mt Gambier, Anangu Pitjantjatjara Lands and the Riverland all converge on the Adelaide Festival Centre to celebrate the artfulness and artlessness of being human. The 16 nights celebration has over 450 artists giving 180 performances of some 68 different shows, with eleven new events exclusive to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. We continue our program series of previous years with Sit Down Satire, Cabaret Crème, Enchanté Cabaret, Classic Cabaret, Deutsche Discourse, Contemporary Cabaret, New York Series V, The Salon Series, Nearly Ready!, Masterclasses, Exhibitions and Talks. We have two new Series, In their Own Words featuring songwriters performing their own material and Entrée Cabaret, a free program of talented South Australian performers in Lyrics Lounge. From New York, we have Tony DeSare and Maude Maggart; from France, Isabelle Georges and Frédérik Steenbrink; from Germany, Eva Meier; from London, the multi-talented Jeremy Sams; all on their first visits to Australia. We welcome Issa from Canada as well as old friends with new shows – Caroline Nin and Christopher Green.

We will kick off some Festival commissions: Licence to Thrill – The Scores of James Bond hosted by Alan Brough, Variété – A Homage to the Spiegeltent in partnership with the Spiegel Maestro David Bates and The Feast of Argentina Gina Catalina where chef Fofi Christou provides a gastronomical response to the wild tales of Moira Finucane’s character. Our favourite special ticket offer Bring a Friend Free on Wednesdays thanks to Minter Ellison continues. The Kool Kat Festival Club returns and you can dance the night away with free entry if you have purchased a ticket to a show that night. I would like to thank all the performers, staff, technicians, sponsors, partners, friends, family and interested souls who come together to make this amazing catmosphere! So scratch that seven-year itch… and join us in seventh heaven at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival!

The annual Adelaide Cabaret Festival is a blaze of creativity that lights up our State bringing it into world focus, by mounting the best and biggest cabaret festival in the world. Presentation of the myriad forms of cabaret stimulates artistic inventiveness by opening up the mind of the artist to future possibilities. The cabaret artist seeks that personal relationship between performer and audience, an intimacy that invites you to look into the soul of the artist and by reflection, look into your own soul. Cabaret lets us feel the essence of live performance and the joy which comes with this experience. The cabaret artist through outrageous satire, personal stories or soul searching song can touch our humanity and celebrate being alive to one self and to the world around us. The Adelaide Cabaret Festival invigorates the traditional role of the artist to hold up the mirror to life, showing us who we are and what we might become, within a festival experience that is simply such great fun. Enjoy! I would like to thank my fellow Adelaide Cabaret Festival Committee members – Nicky Downer AM, Simon Burke, Trudy McGowan, Bill Stephens, Joanne Staugas and Amanda Ward – for their valuable contribution to this world-class event.

The art of Cabaret has been documented way back to 15th century France. The word in French means “small room” or “wine cellar”. Most cultures have an oral tradition of cabaret, storytelling with songs. Cabaret is an extraordinary form of human communication evoking all our senses and challenging and informing our thoughts about ourselves and the world around us. The cabaret artist talks and sings directly to the audience. Cabaret can be avant-garde, as well as entertaining. It can make you cry and laugh at the same time. It can be a critically reflective mirror of topical events, morals, politics, personal and cultural issues, walking the tightrope between drama theatre and the variety show. Always a flexible medium, cabaret has shifted with the times without ever losing its rebellious wit or innovative nature. It’s a playroom of emotions for adults. VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV

TINA C

WORLD PREMIERE EXCLUSIVE TO ADELAIDE

WITH SPECIAL GUEST AURIEL ANDREW SORRY SEEMS TO BE THE HARDEST WORD With the legs of a supermodel and a brain to match, superstar Nashville diva Tina C returns to Adelaide with one thing on her mind – Reconciliation between the Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people of Australia through the healing power of music. Not just any music... Australian Country Music. Through the warm story-telling and celebration of human spirit that is so integral to country music, and with the razor-sharp wit that she is hoping will carry her to the White House in 2008, Tina C will use Australian Country Music to guide you through a minefield of issues into a world of better understanding where everyone harmonises on I’m a Little Bit Country, I’m A little Bit Aboriginal. With special guest, Auriel Andrew, a legend of the Australian country music scene and the first indigenous Australian woman to appear regularly on Australian live TV, Tina C invites you to leave your prejudices at the door, tune in to your inner Tamworth and join with her in singing You Built a Rabbit-Proof Fence Around Your Heart. Christopher Green

WORLD PREMIERE EXCLUSIVE TO ADELAIDE

MY LIFE AS SOMEONE ELSE Christopher Green strips away the masks of Tina C and Ida Barr to perform a collection of his favourite songs by artists who have found a way of creating a glimmer of quiet sense amidst the cacophony of life. Linked with Chris’ own brand of darkly comic wit, the characters in each song come at life from a bewildering range of angles; all looking at joy, regret, growing up and the bravery of attempting to really be yourself. With the aid of such luminaries of the modern lyric as Bob Dylan, Paul Kelly and Kate Bush, the man described by Bjorn and Benny from ABBA as “funny & intelligent”, doesn’t aim to provide answers about how to live but might formulate some half-decent questions.

THE SOUBRETTES In the tradition of comic opera, the soubrette is a pert, young chambermaid who is flirtatious, mischievous and gossipy. Tania Kyriakou and Alice Carter’s sweet voices angelically deliver risqué songs with delicious incongruity. Maude Maggart is on an express ride to cabaret super-stardom as inevitable as it is amazing. This sultry, young chanteuse is the scion of a show-biz family: her lovestruck grandparents were musicians in the 1930s; her parents wooed each other whilst working on Broadway, performing in Applause; and her younger sister is pop singer/songwriter, Fiona Apple. Already, she’s sold out an extended engagement at the revered Algonquin Hotel and won a Tony for Special Achievement in a Cabaret as well as acted in a new film by Robert Downey Junior. In this intimate and intense show, Maude explores the rich legacy of the Great American Songbook from Duke Ellington to Irving Berlin.

WOMEN WITH STANDARDS In 2004, four women came together to premiere at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. The idea was simple: four mighty voices and four sparkling personalities giving their fresh, contemporary take on some of the greatest songs of the 20th century. The show was critically acclaimed and a smash hit with audiences. Naomi Eyers, Libby O’Donovan, Melissa McCaig and Lee McAllistair have since gone on to make Women with Standards a triumph internationally, making their debut at the Edinburgh Fringe last year. Ngapartji Ngapartji (pronounced ng-arp-ar-gee ng-arp-ar-gee) Ngapartji Ngapartji is a Pitjantjatjara concept meaning “I give you something, you give me something”. Hosted by Spinifex man Trevor Jamieson and his Walytja (family), this unique theatrical experience is part language and culture lesson, and part storytelling with music. The audience are invited to learn Pitjantjatjara, a Central Desert language spoken by 2,500 people across the north-western parts of South Australia. In exchange, Trevor will share parts of his family story in Pitjantjatjara and in English. His father, born in the red desert sands where his people had lived for over 50,000 years, was moved off his Ngura (country) to make way for the British atomic tests at Maralinga following World War II. The production explores the effects that the Cold War and international politics had on Trevor’s family living in remote central Australia. Each session is complete, though audiences are encouraged to attend all four unique sessions to learn more of the language and experience a richer and deeper understanding of Ngapartji Ngaparjti. The themes for each session are: Thursday: Anangu - The Body Friday: Walytja - Family Saturday: Tjukurpa - Law and culture Sunday: A session covering all topics and a conclusion to the week. by EDDIE PERFECT

DATE 17 June

Script developed with Toby Schmitz At last, the incredible life and career of cricket’s most colourful star is the subject of an epic piece of music theatre by the multi-award winning composer, lyricist and comedian, Eddie Perfect. Part personal history, part hallucination, the legendary spin-bowler’s life takes on Wagnerian proportions as he plunges headlong through sex and scandal, public victory and personal defeat, with a jazz, funk, soul and gospel-inspired musical score. Shane Warne: The Musical is about the big issues of success and failure, the pressure of public scrutiny, over-indulgence, being an Australian male and the heartbreak that comes with falling short of getting everything one wants. Cast includes: Eddie Perfect as Shane

David Young

Jane Fraser is going to be on TV. Nothing will stop her: not blackmail, deceit nor the fact that she’s not beautiful. So off she goes to The Beauty Spot and its three makeover magicians, ruled by the chauvinistic Gregg Griggs. Will ‘Plain Jane’ become ‘Perfect Jana’? Or will her ugly ambition ruin the show? This very fast, funny and bitchy musical black comedy was short-listed for last year’s Pratt Prize for a New Musical Theatre Work. Created by the supremely talented David Young, it’s something akin to Little Shop of Horrors meets Chicago. The Beauty Spot is a fun afternoon with friends.

“ ... David Young’s score is unceasingly melodic... the makings of a fun, catchy musical are all there.” THE AGE adelaidecabaretfestival.com
