DSU Gloal Design Society(GDS) Program

Since its establishment in 1992, the Design College of Dongseo University has repeatedly made daring experiments and innovations as a specialized college. As a result of putting the best efforts to nurture

talents and competencies with a spirit of service and

practical skills, the college of design was able to achieve

rapid growth in a short time. We are a young and vibrant college that continues to advance rapidly based on

three strategies: specialization, informatization, and

globalization.

In 2014, removing the barriers between majors, the

Undergraduate Design Department launched “Route,” an

innovative education system consisting of six convergence

routes. The department also promoted design talents

with international competencies. In particular, in 2015,

the college established a “Global Design Society (GDS)”

program and held summer-intensive workshops in leading overseas educational institutions such as New York and

Chicago, USA, and Milan, Italy.

With a slogan of “To the World,” the college encourages

Japan, China, and Indonesia.

Overseas internship projects such as the “K-Move”

were also carried out successfully, and every year more than 40 design college graduates received overseas

internship opportunities. Looking at how excellent

students perform on the global stage, we can say with

great pride that our students’ design competence and

competitiveness are as high as the world’s best. For

example, our students won awards at leading domestic

and international design competitions, including the

German Red Dot Design Award, one of the world's best

authorities in the design field, thereby gaining recognition on the world stage for their design capabilities.

This booklet provides one part of these great efforts.

In the summer of 2020, despite the unprecedented

situation of COVID-19, we tried a new virtual format of a workshop, where the aspirations of students in Busan,

Korea, and the passion of our chair-professor Ico Migliore in Milano, Italy, joined forces. During the short period

of one week, the power of creative competencies was

unleashed and went beyond Korea and Italy’s borders. The worries and frustrations, all-night work, endless

there was an ecological park nearby, and it was located

in a corner of road, so accessibility was good. It was also a gateway to the “Industrial Complex Cultural Space

Based on these advantages, we want to inform the history and brand of the Busan parent company and improve the

perception of paint, which is mostly remembered as a hazardous substance.

Along the promenade you will see a messy look behind the

made temporary living spaces.

You can see the pedestrian overpass in the direction to the

industrial complex and ecological park, and the picture on the right is the site seen from the pedestrian overpass.

The liveliness of residential & commercial complexes and

the outdated appearances around the site are compared.

Despite being in the same area, there are differences in the number of people walking on both sides of the road. Our solution is ‘connecting with the surrounding

environment.’ The redesigned kiosk will become a medium to illuminate the dark streets and will solve the problem through the experiences (visitors behavior). When the

conflict is resolved, it will naturally become a place where

people can use. Also the area will be revitalized and the perception of industrial complexes will change.

The elderly, the representative users, want to comfort their lonely hearts.

In all projects we have to

merge two things: one is the logic and the other is the magic.

Bringing both logic and

magic together, I would like

to transform this into place.

For example, It could be a

place where people can go for repairing shoes but casually

meeting up with finding a clear, unique identity.

The important aspect is to involve people; be

aware of our daily lives in public spaces. This can

be done through small interventions. I think it is

quite interesting and you can also apply one thing that involve tensions between logic and magic.

When we have this new vision, a new relationship

form; that is how we design things. We need to

have this kind of logic and then we have to add

this kind of magic, something that makes people’s

imagination flow and fly.

Our site is a Jogwang paint shop located at 787 Nakdongdaero, Sasang-gu, Busan. It is located at the entrance of

the industrial and cultural complex that will be developed

in the future, so it will play an important role in the future.

Despite the possibility and necessity of development, it is a place with little use due to the image of the factory.

So, with the goal of improving people’s perception of the

industrial complex, we are going to propose a space for

local residents who have not enjoyed this place properly. We recycle used paint buckets to bring out the character

of the paint shop, which is the original purpose of the

kiosk. The concept is a cup phone toy that I played with once when I was a child, and expressed a paint bucket

like a phone. Phone means both a phone and a sound, so we tried to express the color of the sound by combining

a phone with paint. The voice of the residents is captured

in a medium called a telephone, and each paint color contains the tone and emotion of the speaker.

In order to create a pleasant surrounding environment, we considered the connection between the existing park and

the promenade. In order to revitalize the streets that were

not used by humans, a fence and lighting design were

devised based on the natural object called’reed’ in the

existing area. It can be a bright light like a street lamp at

night, or it can be a symbolic building in the neighborhood.

We proceeded project with a fairy tale concept.

Kiosk is located in the forest, so it has poor visibility and accessibility.

A collage of that could happen around our kiosk.

A mind map about Kiosk. Through this we intend to

add vitality.

By selecting keywords from the mind map and

emphasizing assimilation and exoticism, we found that light can compensate for shortcomings.

The warm glow lanterns will be placed around the

kiosk.

In old times, fireflies were used as light in the forest. we will use them to create a fairy tale atmosphere.

It’s the effects of day and night when the lanterns were installed.

We plan to set up lighting based on basic behavior

that were walking, standing, and sitting.

We analyzed the feelings of acts. The spacing and

height were set according to each action. A layout based on the preceding content.

We will make up for the weakness of kiosks through

lanterns and activate them by allowing users to come. This is the render image of day and night when

applied to kiosks.

Our kiosk is located at a small intersection in Seomyeon,

Busan, and there is a cart bar street on the right side and the police academy street on the left.

Each roads has its characteristics so the police academy street is activated at a daytime, the cart bar street is

activated at night.

In this street, we will take the characteristics of the police street and make a kiosk for the role of street guardian.

So we organized the things that when we think of the

police by mind map and decided to use safety, protect, Siren, police cap and symbolic color.

The siren lights up when a car passes by to alert

pedestrians and turns to warnings both pedestrians and drivers when the car is speeding.

The roof took the shape of a police cap, reminding of a

police officer, and made it protrude more forward to avoid the rain. The wall part was designed using shape of light that the street was lit with light.

During the daytime, recognizing the existence of police street and getting information or fostering a good

perception of police through the kiosk and this will be done with rest.

At night, a cart bar street is formed and the presence of

the kiosk gives people a sense of relief and can be warned

about cars from the siren.

The screen shows not only inside but also outside, and

people enjoy night culture with relief.

The kiosk we chose is located in Bujeon, Busan. The

traditional kiosks had only one function and behaivor, no

waiting space and shelter, and old facilities. This point was

redesigned as a kiosk to gain experience and information.

When visited this kiosk is can divided that when who came

to the market, rested and comes to mend his shoes. The

comma, which means rest and special effects, is applied to the kiosk so that we can feel the wait, rest area, new

sensory experience, and feel refresh in addition to the

repair function in our kiosk. The existing kiosk is designed by applying the footrest that is the shape and point of

the shoe box. The interior space means entering the shoe

box, and the inside is applied with a shoe box frame and the inside component is used to feel the sensation. And

the shoe shape was applied to the floor to induce moving.

This shows that the younger and older generations are

kiosks like ‘comma’ that give them a special effect to feel newness and memories.

Our site is Neingjeong spring in Neingjeong and the lot area is about 90 square meters. It means a cold spring

because it is and area where cold water flows. Originally, it could be used as drinking water, but not now. There is

steamy hot water in winter, and very cool water comes out

in summer.

We pointed out that the overall problem with this site

is that there is no intergenerational exchange, that past

and present are not connected, and that they do not use

nature in the city center.

We solved these problems with the keyword “Harmony”. We will create harmony among people, harmony in the

stream, and harmony of these sounds.

Soundscape will be made into a space where you can

enjoy the sound and scenery of water falling while taking a foot bath chatting, and feel nature in the city center.

So, how can we maximize the sound of water in this space? We try to block the noise of the road through the sound of

water from the Neingjeong spring. We also designed the

sound of different water depending on the height of the

drop.

You can feel coolness and dynamism when you enjoy

the sound of strong falling water walls. And you can feel

interesting, amazing, and funny when you hear sounds

that change with the height of the water. You can also feel
