LONDON WORKSHOP 2022

This global design workshop with Yard Studio in London was a great opportunity to discover new opportunities.

First of all, while conducting this Workshop Project Theme, Story & Play, it is a rediscovery of the fact that "fun brings out creativity" and a rediscovery of the design potential of our participating students. In particular, I think students have discovered a new perspective through the process of acknowledging differences in different ways of thinking and solving problems creatively through a team composed of three students with different majors. In addition, it is a good opportunity to meet with the representatives of Yeonju Yang & Claudio of Yard Studio, who have excellent design skills.

It was a short workshop of 5 times in about 15 days, but I am sure it was a beneficial and pleasant experience for all of you who participated.

Prof, Jung wook GO Coordinator, Creative Workshop London 2022 Autumn

Designers always have a desire for new things. New ideas, new environments, and collaboration with new colleagues. In that sense, the Yard Studio Workshop seems to have been an experience that intensely draws out our senses.

I witnessed a scene in which a team of students with three different majors, Visual Design, Digital Media Design, and Product Interaction Design, was placed on the unfamiliar condition of a workshop and radiated synergy that expanded several times. The act of design is not a reproduction of the past, but an experimental exploration process of imagining things that have not yet happened. That's why I can dare to say that the output of this workshop students created has value beyond a simple portfolio. I believe that those values will be able to demonstrate their true value on the world stage that each person dreams of.

Thank you to all the professors and students who planned and participaed in this program together various viewpoints and ideas were discussed and shared. We believe this has been a very meaningful and beneficial experience for all students.

This Design Workshop was extraordinary. Students from different majors quickly collaborated and immersed themselves toward their goals, awakening their inner child who was sleeping. The development of perseverance and persistence never slacked off, and the result was a great success! There was continuous laughter throughout the workshop at the brilliant idea, and the online space transcending time and space was filled with relentless experiments and passionate communication. This is enough to qualify as a global designer! Yard CEOs Mrs. Yeonju Yang and Mr. Claudio Ripol woke up early in the morning before going to work, but they generously poured warm encouragement and vivid criticism on the students while delighting the eyes with a couple look with fresh saturation and pattern. Comments that suggested clear goals, sparked creativity, and encouraged teamwork set an example of who a good director can make a project succeed. Thank you. Yard intern Mr. Ho-yeon, a graduate and first proponent of this workshop, devotedly served as an intermediary between Busan and London and devotedly helped his juniors with meticulous comments. Good manners and every act of dedication were examples for his juniors.

Lastly, I would like to thank Professor Koh Jeong-wook, who is in charge of the entire workshop, for his hard work. Even in the middle of the semester, if it weren't for the professor's systematic, meticulous, and considerate progress, the students wouldn't have been able to show off their talents to their heart's content. I would also like to thank all the professors who participated. I hope that the international workshop with our Design University and Yard will continue for a long time!

About Yeonju Yang and Claudio Ripol

Co-founders of YARD studio in London, UK Co-founders of Owl&Dog Playbooks

BIOGRAPHY

Yeonju and Claudio met in London, while studying a Masters Degree in product design at the Royal College of Art.

Yeonju went on to join Ab Rogers Design, where she worked on interiors, taking ideas from concept through to technical and production detail, collaborating with architects and specialist sub-contractors. She developed retail projects for clients such as Miller Harris, Issey Miyake Perfumes, as well as numerous exhibition and museum projects such as Science Museum, Tate Modern and British Council. She later joined Pentagram London as an Associate Partner.

In the meantime, Claudio went on to join Christoph Behling, where he worked primarily for Tag Heuer, both catalogue watches and yearly concept pieces for Basel World, as well as mobile phones and other consumer industrial design projects. He later joined Polaroid design team, to work on new cameras, accessories and music players.

Yeonju and Claudio co-founded YARD design studio in 2011, where they work on a variety of disciplines including product, interiors, graphics, packaging and branding.

In parallel, they also launched children book publisher Owl&Dog Playbooks in 2016. Passionate for producing beautiful tactile toys but also aware that the price point would make them unaffordable and niche, they set to create books which could be played with.

Additionally, Claudio was a Research associate at the Royal College of Art, Innovation Unit, and a tutor on Master in Development of Products and Digital Modelling at EsDesign, Barcelona, as well as part of the tribunal for evaluation of final Projects.

Yeonju has been a judge at the D&AD awards for two years running, she has been visiting lecturer at Royal College of Art, and is currently a visiting lecturer at University of the Arts London. Web www.ya-rd.com www.owlanddog.com

ABOUT OWL&DOG PLAYBOOKS

Owl & Dog Playbooks is a children’s book publisher with a drive to explore new formats which challenge the traditional book with a three-dimensional creativity.

Our content is generated in-house or through collaboration with artists, both established and emerging.

We create objects halfway between a book and a toy to enhance the reading experience with playful physical interaction.

Since the first book was created in 2016, the publishing house has reached worldwide distribution and received multiple awards.

Creative Workshop London, 2022 Autumn

This was the first workshop that YARD has run with Dongseo University, and the brief for this year was "Story & Play".

During three intense weeks in October 2022, twelve students from three different design departments came together to create an object that would integrate story and play, crossing over two and three dimensions.

We provided a general framework, expected outcome and inspirational references.

The students joined in groups of three and dynamically worked hard to achieve the goals set out for each phase.

They enthusiastically took to working together in interdisciplinary groups, bringing their own ideas and skills for the good of the project.

They generated a number of creative ideas and selected a direction to pursue, successively detailing and refining their projects until the creation of a prototype.

The results were fantastic, and the students' hard work and skill were inspiring, as was the input from the several professors involved.

PREFACE

Creative Workshop London, 2022 Autumn

I'm a graduate of Dongseo University majoring in industrial design until last year. I got an internship at Yard Studio in London and I'm learning a lot there with great designers.

So, I really wanted to experience what I learned in London to my juniors at college. By this workshop, I hoped that students would have a design perspective not only domestically but more globally.

That's how I feel really fortunate that this workshop was made like this. So, I'd like to say thank you so much once again to the professors and school officials who worked hard to make this workshop possible. And I'm so thankful to Yeonju and Claudio for teaching the students very passionately.

In this workshop, design major students in each field had to create one outcome, and I thought that students could learn a lot from there. More than expected, the students were very good at teamwork and the atmosphere of cooperation was so wonderful.

So I think the results of this workshop were really great. I hope that cooperation with Dongseo University and Yard Studio will continue well, not just this year.

And above all, I would like to say well done to our juniors who worked the hardest on this workshop. And I want to tell you that I am very proud of you as a senior.

I'm very much looking forward to you guys future.

Concept Animal Train

Our playbook have five sets of contents and when each book is folded, you can see the animal pattern thorough the hole in the front of the train.

When you open the book, you can see the hidden animal illustration. Also, if you look at the side, it shows the silhouette of the animal on both sides and where the animal lives.

The magnet is built into the book, so you can connect the books and play with train. Also, by changing the order of the train car, children can make their own story.

12 DSU GLOBAL DESIGN SOCIETY

Process Development

We selected the keyword after proceeding with the mind map first. The keywords we selected included transportation, animals, and extensions.

Based on that, we went to a bookstore for market research, and we also had a desk research. In Korea, most of the playbooks were relatively uniformed.

There were many products that made it possible to interact using sound, light, and magnets. There are also many types of puzzles and pop-up books.

We decided to add fun elements through free feeling of

good and animal personification. And also decided to use colors that feel high saturation and contrast according to the age group of the subject.

This is our character and train sketches. We planned various animals and poses and proceeded with the process. Zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, turtles, and owls are the final animals to be selected.

13 CREATIVE WORKSHOP SERIES 2022

As for the strengths of our book, we pursued visual stimulation and development through contrast and pattern in terms of visual and color, folding and unfolding books, playing with them, and developing small muscles in terms of function.

Also, children can make their own story and stimulate the imagination by using patterns, habitats, silhouettes, and characterized animals.

Children can learn simple conversation structures through addresses or transportation. It's a simple structure, but it has the advantage of being able to use it in various ways.

In terms of production, it has a simple word and sentence structure, so translation is easy regardless of any country.

The production structure is also simple. In short, it's simple, but effective and efficient.

14 DSU GLOBAL DESIGN SOCIETY
Process Presentation

This is our final result. Each page size is 150*150 and the design can be seen both inside and outside when the train is assembled.

Each book has a color that highlights the characteristics of animals, and the silhouette and habitat have aroused curiosity.

Next is the package box design. You can put the train series in and keep it in the bookshelf on any side.

We gave this experience to five-year-olds. We delivered 110mm, 150mm, and 170mm prototypes as well as size

check. As a result, the size was decided to be 150mm.

The children saw our prototype and recognized it correctly as a train and gave each other animal quizzes and played. In the process, the children acted as if they had become teachers and did role-play.

The title of the book is "Whare Are You Going?" and it's made for 2-5 years old. The price is $10.43 USD, which is 14,900 Korean won. The material of the book is made of 1mm thick paper, and the package box is also made of thick paper.

16 DSU GLOBAL DESIGN SOCIETY
17 CREATIVE WORKSHOP SERIES 2022

It started with the question of what interests 2-5 year olds.

Thinking about things that children might like, I listed keywords as they came to mind, and thought about what kind of play would help them grow up.

Afterwards, as a result of selecting some of the keywords of interest and combining them with each other, ideas such as 'What does goblin poop look like', 'Goblin beauty salon', 'Who lives in the tree', and 'Let's eat a sandwich' came up.

18 DSU GLOBAL DESIGN SOCIETY
Concept Goblin

Process Development

We developed a development with the theme of 'What does goblin poop look like?'

First of all, the image of a goblin differs from country to country, so I changed the object to a monster while thinking about what would be similar.

The story line was set through feedback that it would be better to tell a story about what the monster eats and what process it produces, rather than just showing what the monster eats and emits.

It consists of a total of 8 stories, and the digestion process

of monsters is expressed with imagination in an easy-tounderstand way from a child's point of view. In addition, it was considered to take a different motion each time the page was turned.

19 CREATIVE WORKSHOP SERIES 2022

Process Presentation

The final result was graphics and mockups. The mockup made the appearance of the monster hard using hardboard paper, and the pages of the book were made with gloss and hardness using sunshine paper.

As a result of the actual use test, it worked well and the size was designed to be stored in a bookshelf.

The final result was produced using bright and vivid colors and appropriate patterns by selecting butterflies with a hopeful image.

If a child reads this book, it is expected to help develop

fine motor skills due to the various motions that exist in each story and to experience visual diversity due to various patterns.

20 DSU GLOBAL DESIGN SOCIETY

When a book is placed on a bookshelf, the appearance of the monster has been changed to a monster with a limp appearance except for the legs so that it can be stored properly.

Also, to add a fun element, I thought what if the monster could be made of non-woven fabric and the eyes, teeth, and patterns could be customized using Velcro.

However, through feedback that it would be better not to include too many elements, the monster-shaped plate was changed to printing on paper. The size was expected to be 150 X 220 mm.

23 CREATIVE WORKSHOP SERIES 2022

Concept Duck

Our team's design concept is the story of a duck with a farting sound in its mouth. The idea of fart balloons was derived by combining physiological behavior with objects that children can easily enjoy.

Through this, a book called 'duck says bboong bboong' was born that could arouse children's interest with less power.

24 DSU GLOBAL DESIGN SOCIETY

Process Development

The illustration is rough but has a unique charm and features a variety of patterns in large shapes. The duck was expressed simply and crudely, giving it a unique charm and adding a pattern to the duck painting, which can be somewhat bland, giving it a different feeling.

The color is a mixture of lithography and pastel tone. We used pastel tones to help children get visual stimulation even after seeing the color and to make them want to see the duck and hug it according to the story.

25 CREATIVE WORKSHOP SERIES 2022

Process Presentation

Before making the draft, design keywords were first set with "stimulus of hearing and vision" and "simple manipulation."

Concept keywords such as "fart sound," "animal," and "growth character" were also established.

Later, the first draft wanted to use rubber balloons attached to books and produced books with flat backs like ordinary books.

26 DSU GLOBAL DESIGN SOCIETY

In the second draft, we wanted to make the sides of this book round to save the duck's cheeks, and we added the letter Bboong bboong on the left cheek that folds.

The third draft is designed to separate the balloons and uses silicon to prevent problems when children bite or throw them. The final 4th draft modified the duck's facial expression and modified the graphic a little more to give it a more lithographic feel.

Also, the balloon part on the last page, which was not decided, was completed by drawing it like a duck's butt.

The book "duck says Bboong Bboong!" has a cover of 205mm x 255mm to 200mm x 250mm and a height of 12mm, 2.5mm to 1mm. The material of the duck's mouth is silicone, and the paper is laminated.

29 CREATIVE WORKSHOP SERIES 2022

Concept Treasure Island

We designed a book with the concept of a playbook that helps 2-5 year-old children enjoy and enjoy their bath time.

Since children aged 2-5 sometimes don't like bathing, we designed the bath book playbook package to make them happy by recognizing the bath time as a positive and enjoyable time through our team's bath book.

30 DSU GLOBAL DESIGN SOCIETY

Process Development

Each person researched various ideas without limiting the type of playbook and came up with his own playbook ideas, and then decided to develop a bath book, which is the most interesting idea from the ideas he came up with.

By researching various bath books and bath toys, we came up with various ideas such as a box-shaped prefabricated playbook that can make children's bath time more enjoyable, a playbook using color - change (hydrochromic ink) ink, and a playbook containing fish toys in the book.

Through the process of selecting interesting parts from the above three ideas and integrating them into one idea, we developed the playbook of the story of friends living in

the sea leaving to find a treasure island in two versions: a three-dimensional version and a folding version.

After deciding to develop a foldable playbook in consideration of the production and transportation process of the book, we modified the form and story of the book so that the flow of the book and the story could be naturally continued.

The final result was produced by developing the illustrations and colors of the book suitable for the modified form and story.

31 CREATIVE WORKSHOP SERIES 2022

Process Presentation

It is a bath book that tells the story of sea life friends leaving to find a treasure island, and in the process of adventure, they meet various sea life friends and go on an adventure together.

It is a playbook that helps children read books while taking a bath, participate in the story in the book, communicate with the characters through the bath toys included in the book, and have a good bath time.

In addition, it is organized so that you can read two stories in one book by putting different stories back and forth without distinguishing between the front and back.

The book's components include color changes through discoloration ink, flat book effects, and pop-up book effects to further draw children's interest, a net pouch for storing bath toys is attached to the exterior of a pearshaped book, making it easier to store and manage bath toys.

If you open the pop-up part of the book's treasure island, the book itself floats on the water, so you can participate in the book's story and read books with characters, pears, and treasure boxes included as bath toys.

Also, through the flat book effect on each page, you can

read a book looking forward to what characters and interesting contents will be contained this time.
