DESIGN WORKSHOP WITH ICO MIGLIORE
This workshop is the third of summer workshop with
Ico Migliore that started since 2019. Even though the
pandemic is still widespread, the 13 participants - 11
undergraduate students and 2 graduate students - as well as other workshop members well communicated through
the real time internet meeting that took place in Milan and
Busan.
The focus of this year's 'Readymade Cocoons'
workshop was to bring out 'Creativity' and 'Connectivity'
by deconstructing a beach chair and reassembling it into a new chair, or a nest, with new behaviors and interactions.
I believe editing a magazine, making a video, creating a
PPT presentation, and producing 1/5 scale model in such a short time were certainly not an easy task for students, who withstood fatigue and hot, humid summer of Busan
and ultimately were compensated for the satisfaction
coming from the function and visuality of their work.
Every year the expectations are getting higher, yet we
have managed to match the requirements with the best effort. Still, it was hard time indeed!
Finally, I'd like to finish this with the Ico's compliment
that the students were excellent designers with
individuality, open imagination, refined graphic, and creativity.

PRE-WORKSHOP
W O R K S H O P K IC K- O FF
I’d like to start my first lesson by talking about what’s
creativity and what we must do to achieve it. Many people
misunderstand the concept of creativity, yet it is essential to know exactly what it is.
What is connectivity? Connectivity is to understand
things, to break them up into several pieces, to add the
different factors, and to reproduce them by reassembling them together. Of course, we have to be careful to not
simply copy things, which many people mistakenly take
as making something creative. On the other hand, we still
have to steal things from many different fields we see and
put them together by pasting them in another novel ways. This is how creativity is working.
Marcel Duchamp is a great French artist who was full
of creativity. In 1913, he conceived of ways to take objects from fields of any kind and put them together. Take an
example, 'Fountain'. Of course, everyone can see this is
not a real fountain, yet he transformed this standard urinal
into a piece of art with new meanings, just according to
his idea. I think this gives many valuable lessons for us to
08
DSU GLO B AL DE SIG N S O C IE T Y
learn. Thus, creativity is not math. Not one plus one is two.
It is not always Two. One plus one could become two and a half, three, four, or maybe sometimes one and a half. Creativity is very flexible.
Just start thinking on the other side. And let
randomness and chances lead you, too. It's not a linear
process creativity, and it's not a process that goes back and forth.
The process of ready-made involves transforming an
object by adding other objects. In most cases, therefore, it
is hard to infer the original, initial shape of the readymade. All objects are combined and reassembled in different
ways, albeit serving similar functions.
When you design something to achieve new functions,
you also need to create new behaviors. So the most
important part is to understand how people use objects. And this is another way of thinking about ready-made.
WEBINAR KICK-OFF
Stealing, having great curiosity, and trying to understand.
For instance, when you design a chair, or any object, you
need to think how much people will use it for how much time.
Another very interesting aspects in creativity are that
your curiosity can change the perspective and that you
can really take advantage from material.
"Creativity is not individual. Creativity is collection. We need to work with the collective creativity teamwork and try to develop our ability to do so by exchanging information."

Our concept is 'embrace', which is the same as the last time.
This is a collage about the concept.
The first idea was to assemble the accordion's bellows section on the existing folding chair. We changed the
section of the accordion's wrinkled bellows to a hand
shape to symbolize the embrace and acceptance of the
seated person. This allows users to feel comfortable
by feeling being hugged. If you look at the points of the design further, you can stretch the accordion bellows as long as you want and utilize the lighting function
embedded in its fingertips. It is also characterized by the
availability of various graphics. This is a graphic design that will be included in the accordion bellows section,
and it can be a design that adds uniqueness as it can be expressed differently depending on the user's age and ethnicity.
The second idea was to use a folding fan to make a design
of a folding chair that resembles the fan when folded and
unfolded. It also can be used as a mood light, allowing
users to feel cozy by making them feel as if they are

The keyword for the concept is Blooming. Change and let
something blossom into a new space. We have organized the idea sketches sequentially. As the final model, we
want to make it with one horn. The final model resembles
a rocking chair that could be used alone or for two people.
It is difficult to make a sound just by shaking, so we want
to put something small like beads in the horn so that it can
make a sound. As the image board shows, we imagined the rocking chair in many natural camping sites such as
mountains and beaches, and we chose the colors that can well present such atmospheres. In addition, various art with cable ties can add various feelings and patterns.
