INTRODUCTION

DSU Global Design Society(GDS) Program

 CHICAGO WORKSHOP

DSU Global Design Society(GDS) Program

Dongseo University has been chosen the design school as a specialized area of studies since its establishment in . After adopting a series of challenging experiments and innovation, it has now grown into a college consisting of various design majors and fashion department.

In addition, We have promoted international student exchange programs actively. In particular, in , the college established ʻGlobal Design Scociety(GDS)’ program and has been holding summer intensive workshop in leading oversea educational institutions in New York, Chicago, USA and Milan, Italy, etc.

With a slogan of “To the world,” the Dongseo design college encourages its students to take on a bold global challenge as world citizens. The GDS program has helped participants change their attitudes; enhance their level of confidence and motivation. With the aim of being “one person, on global”, the GDS program provides in-depth study opportunities, workshops, field experience, exhibitions, internship, and cultural experiences in various countries such as the United States, Italy, Australia, Japan, China, and Indonesia.

In the fall of , international design CHICAGO AUTUMN WORKSHOP was conducted online with students majoring in product interaction design at Dongseo University in Busan, Korea and Michael D. Prince, CEO of BEYOND DESIGN, an international industrial design consulting company located in Chicago, USA, and visiting professor at Dongseo University. has been successfully completed. This 'CHICAGO AUTUMN WORKSHOP', which is held for the second time this year, has participating students forming teams under the theme of 'Let's Going Shopping!' “Solution

Design for Grocery Customer Experience for People with Disabilities”.

Although this workshop was a short period of days, systematic and in-depth ideas were discussed and shared in terms of customer experience and strategic design. For students, this global design project will be a very meaningful and beneficial experience as an opportunity to build their expertise.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Professor Michael D. Prince for preparing a good 'Theme & Contents' for this workshop, valuable critique, and the Strategic Design Process (SDP) lecture of Beyond Design. It was a great honor for all of us, and the experience left a precious memory for all of us.

PREFACE

Strategic Design Process (SDP) Workshop, AUTUMN

DESIGN WORKSHOP with MICHAEL D. PRINCE

This year’s workshop is the fourth of our winter workshops with Michael D. Prince which we annually host since . Despite the still ongoing pandemic, the participants undergraduate students - communicated through the real-time conference meeting via Zoom that took place in Chicago and Busan. There was a global time gap of almost hours, so it was quite intense for both sides.

The focus of this year’s “Let’s Go Shopping” workshop was to bring out ʻStrategic Design Process’ and ʻmanufacturing oriented design’ by cultivating students’ capability of process based research and new product design development. Here, the students of the DongSeo University Design faculty had an intense process in a short time, following the workshop program. I found that the position of a communication lead facilitated the discussions and helped students in depth engagement, by leading communication and translation for this workshop. Apprecitably, I believe that it brought a great opportunity for students to be guided with product design process in oversea’s design studio.

Currently, DSU professors put much effort to plan an internationalized industry-academia cooperation model to create matured education and lectures for students. I hope that many students could produce various performance

as excellent designers and creators in the near future. I sincerely hope that this can be a great launch peddles for the BRIGHT FUTURE!

I would like to finish with Michael’s compliment that the students were excellent designers with individuality, open imagination, refined graphic and modeling, and creativity.

Field Research

We visited the mart and conducted a field search. We couldn't use the walker directly, so we used the simple cart at the mart and experienced what kind of difficult situations there are.

Through this, we organized it by process There was a problem that it was difficult to move a lot of things, and I had to go around because We didn't know the exact location of the items.

Key finding

Get out of the car and take out the walker

Touch - t ype doors are inconvenient to use if they are far from pedestrians.

Automatic door doesn’t recognize the walker so it opens the door by wave hands

Another cart crash with a walker

It is difficult to pass through narrow places due to the size of the walker

Difficulty controlling walkers when holding a lot of things

There’s a possivility that the center of gravity will be tilted forward

It’s hard to put a lot of things in because the basket is small

Stair escalators are hard to use

Pay

TURTLE Team

Our team designed a milk dispenser for grandmother who have difficulty drinking milk due to hand tremors so that they can drink milk more easily and conveniently.

Moon Dong Yeop ansehdduq@naver.com Kim Hyun ji tjdwkrhdwn@naver.com

Heamma Kim Gi Hyun design@daum.net Orangeboy

Our team persona, named Susan, is a -year-old woman. Her job is as Housewife, and she is a hand tremor sufferer. Checking her characteristics, we bought various packages of milk at the supermarket, keenly scrutinised her physical problems, and we tried to use and drink bowls of milk along with her characteristics. While conducting this field research, it was an opportunity to understand Susan's discomfort and organize her discomfort factors to think about how to solve them according to the inconvenience factors. Through desk research such as video materials and interviews, we have been able to find out about the elderly with hand tremor disorders and know their problems meticulously.

First of all, the obvious inconvenience factor that Susan feels most uncomfortable with is that she b ecomes depressed when she shows symptoms of hand tremors in front of people around her. The second inconvenience is that she has to pour milk for her grandson, but she is very uncomfortable because her hands shake so much that she spills milk continuously. In the end, we looked for solutions to the inconvenience Susan felt and conducted a data survey with the aim of solving the inconvenience by designing a smart device that could help solve these problems so that milk could be poured without spilling on the floor or clothes

Our team selected the Seoul Milk brand and the one that can open and close the lid by checking the most commonly used form of milk bottles among the various milk brands in Korea through SWOT analysis and a Positioning Map.

After studying the various inconveniences of the existing Seoul milk cartons, we listed ideas for solutions. The selected idea was to design a milk-pouring device on behalf of Susan.

By drawing scenarios before and after using the design product, we summarized how Susan would feel about improving the problem after using the product. In addition, the product was selected as a form based on the cow's face, the material was selected as matte stainless steel, and the color was selected as white. After checking the improved product's situation using the Scenario, the product idea sketch was conducted. Afterwards, the details of the product to be made through rendering sketches were increased to organize the sketches in a specific form. After the sketches were conducted, product modelling was conducted.

SWOT Analysis

Various problems have been mentioned while sketching. For example, the first, second, and third rough sketches were conducted after receiving feedback from experts on various problems, such as the location of buttons that are difficult for users to check and the factors that may be inconvenient when using them when their hands are shaking. By modifying the shape of the problem and the location of the function, our team was able to design a form that was convenient for the target to use, and also to complete the sketch in a neat and targeted form.

We researched the parts that would go inside the product, checked the internal parts of the existing product, and modelled the inside in detail according to the size and specifications of the internal parts. In addition, the brand logo of the Seoul Milk Company, selected by our team, was included so that it could approach the elderly who purchase existing milk in a friendly manner. The silicon caps inside were made to various standards, and the range of milk cans that could not be used was minimized.

MILK DISPENSER FOR SHAKING DISABLES

For someone with a hand tremor disorder, pouring milk would be a real problem. Once you shake your hand while pouring the liquid, it will bounce to the side. In this case, we focused on these problems and proceeded with the dispenser design for milk. We selected the most appropriate size by referring to the standard of dispensers in the existing market and the standard of Seoul Milk. The dispenser is operated by pressing the touch button. When pressed, the right amount of milk is pulled up by an electric pump combined with a motor and discharged through the outlet, helping to pour milk to people with hand tremors and difficulties pouring milk.

The LEDs on the side indicate the dispenser's status, whether on or off. Due to the nature of the milk dispenser, silicon pipes and stainless steel internal parts were used for cleaner management. I tried to use ʻ Satin white color’ as the main one to show an image that is neat and goes well with milk. In addition, we inserted the brand logo of Seoul Milk with a sophisticated feel to show that it is a product of the brand ʻSeoul Milk’. This dispenser is compatible with all .L, L and .L milk bottles.

When you use the product, you can use it not only with your fingers, but also with your palms and the back of your hands. The dispenser is in the milk container, and fixing it with silicone, so it is easy It is a method of pressing the and simple to detach the dispenser not only for those with a small hand tremor disorder, but also for children with weak arm strength.

Human touch emotional marketing is applied to induce consumers, like Susan, who suffers from hand tremors, so they can purchase milk bottles from the perspective of grandmothers or families.

According to Persona. As Jimmy Kim suffers from severely Paralyzed legs, it is not easy to move around by himself. Also, he is using a wheelchair so he can’t reach the high place. His wife used to help him. Unfortunately, his wife passed away last year. he is not familiar with shopping alone. He should consider what he could buy, not what he wants to buy. We asked ourselves. “Is there any way to solve these problems?”. We thought Jimmy need more strong self _relience.

Jimmy loves cereal. He usually goes to the grocery store to get some cereal and milk. With a wheelchair, he is not free to move around or pick up some products at the grocery store. The most uncomfortable thing is he can’t reach high places without others’ help. After he gets help to pick out the cereal from a high place, the second problem comes out. He can’t use a general cart in the store. He needs a place to put the basket or some products that he wants to buy.

So we decided to give him a solution and independence with his wheelchair. Our goal is to make him able to buy cereals and milk regardless of his condition. Also, a newly designed wheelchair will help with his social isolation with his condition. Before we start the process, we are not familiar with wheelchairs. So we borrowed a wheelchair ourselves and derived the pain points.

Map Index
Journey

SWOT

Normally wheelchairs have these strengths, weaknesses, Opportunities, and threats. Based on this research, we produce and organize ideas for wheelchairs. After desk research, we had field research for wheelchair experience. It was almost impossible to reach high places with a wheelchair. Also, the grocery store’s aisle and checkout counter have narrow spaces for wheelchairs to move around.

Field Research

Research

Scenarios

So we give a ʻlift’ function and extra storage idea for wheelchairs. So the person with a wheelchair doesn’t need to ask for help every day.

If the person wants to reach a high place, he can lift his wheelchair, and get items by himself. Now he can buy what he wants to buy, not what he could buy.

Also, with the extra table pop out from the handle, he can easily put some items that he gonna buy. After the purchase, he can put the items under his legs.

Now, ʻshopping alone’ is complete!

Lift / Wheelchair

We also give an idea with move around and rotation. As you can see, both side wheels rotate in different directions and change direction.

It allows for a change of direction or rotation within a very small turning radius. Also, the table pops out from the handle can be used easily without additional space or waste.

It is very inconvenient and very dangerous to walk around the store in a wheelchair with purchased items on your lap. If all the items you have stored for purchase are spilled, you will feel really uncomfortable and ashamed at the same time.

Even in a wheelchair, it is not easy to pick up spilled items. Therefore, by providing these stable tables, we have made it possible for a person in a wheelchair to carry and move items to be purchased more comfortable.

We applied matte white and monotone colors to give a clean and refined image. In addition, it broke away from the rough and dull ugly shape of the existing wheelchair and gave both comfort and a sophisticated design.

Through a convenient joystick that contains various functions, users can conveniently control the wheelchair. In addition, it applies the SOS button that can be requested.

When you pull up the joystick, the wheelchair goes up. After you pick up the items from a high place, you can push down the joystick. Then, the wheelchair will goes down. Through these functions, we tried to show that wheelchair users can shop independently and work confidently without unconditional help.

EPILOGUE

CREATIVE WORKSHOP CHICAGO WINTER WITH MICHAEL PRINCE

Team

During this Beyond project, I was able to learn about the overall flow of design by following the UX research process,Du brainstorming, and ideation, followed by product design procedures, and it was a new and fun opportunity to experience and research the uncomfortable persona. Of course, it was very difficult to sympathize with disabled people, and it was difficult to find out the inconvenience in shopping. Thanks to this experience, I was able to improve my empathic ability and the fun of research, and I was able to develop problem-solving ability through cooperation with my team members. I hope this project will be helpful in applying it to future projects.

Team

It was a good chance for our design experience that we had not experienced such a workshop with Professor Michael. The most memorable thing is that we had to make a detailed user story. There were many variables and inconvenience factors in the experience experienced by users with special cases such as the blind. We felt it was important to respond to it with detailed user experience research. We got lots of feedback from professor Michael, so there were many difficulties in our design, but we appreciate this valuable experience.

Team

With this side of Beyond, it's less time to revisit and experience processors that improve product design. In this project, refunds from many professors and professors from Chicago Beyond Company, how to proceed with the process of a fruitful class, what elements should be displayed in the research, and what parts are needed for the design of the finished product enable production. I can tell. can display. Presenting in English can produce good results after as much labor as possible, but it will take some time. It indicates that the design can be completed and experienced by adding the records and several days of effort together. Thank you to the many people who planned and helped with this program.

Team

It was not easy to proceed with the project for a short period of time while working on this Beyond project. However, I realized that there is a need to proceed with the design using the process I learned during this Beyond project, and I think it was a good opportunity to experience a different experience that I have not done before while conducting the presentation in English. In addition, I could feel the need and appreciation of team members by solving the difficulties I experienced in the direction of progress with my team members while being the team leader in this project. Thank you.

Team

It was a short period, but it was a meaningful workshop with team members and professors.

It was a valuable opportunity to pay attention to the inconveniences of the disabled in their daily lives. Also, it was fresh and fun to experience the inconveniences and derive ideas instead of just doing the design process at a desk. It was also a great experience to share this and discuss it together. Thank you.
