TRAVEL METRO: ZOOS SA

Did you know? You can get up close to Monarto Zoo’s rhinos and hand feed these amazing creatures during a Rhino Interactive.

Did you know? Monarto Zoo is the biggest open-range zoo in Australia and one of the largest in the world, spanning more than 1,500 hectares. You can actually fit every major zoo in Australia in Monarto Zoo and still have land left over.

What’s new at the zoos? It doesn’t matter if you’re six, 60 or somewhere in between — zoos will always be places that are packed full of memories. WORDS Millie Looker

N

o matter how much time has passed since your last visit, you’ll find happy memories flooding right back — guaranteed. And while the charm remains the same, Adelaide and Monarto zoos are constantly working to make your experience a little more magical — especially for kids. So, what’s new at the zoos?

Variety Children’s Zoo

How many times have you wandered past an enclosure that’s the home of a furry friend and thought, ‘I wish I could give that fluffball a snuggle’? Every time? Same. The brand new Variety Children’s Zoo is an ultra-exciting addition to the Adelaide Zoo, giving kids a chance to get closer

than ever to some of the most popular animals — goats, chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits, bettongs and even the alwayssmiling quokkas. It’s sitting right next to the immersive Nature’s Playground, with the Wisteria Café as its neighbour, so caffeine and more fun is never more than a few feet away. With overhead aerial walkways, you can be at one with the birds and gain a whole new perspective from up above as you move from one area to the next. But what really makes the Children’s Zoo even more special is that it’s inclusive of children of all abilities, so every child has a chance to experience a little bit of animal magic. With the help of major partner Variety SA, this interactive precinct has been designed to be an amazing space to play and explore for not only children but also Adelaide Zoo’s four-legged friends, too.

Did you know? Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Zoo are the only major zoos in Australia to be owned and operated by a conservation charity, Zoos SA. By visiting, you’re helping them support species and habitat conservation work locally, nationally and globally.

Did you know? Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Zoo are the only zoos in Australia that offer a life membership, giving you free entry for life. You even get to bring a friend for free.

Try the hair-raising Lions 360 experience at Monarto Zoo, which is unlike anything else in Australia. While you’re there, experience the thrill of hand-feeding a gentle giant at the Giraffe Safari, or there’s the Junior Keeper experience at Adelaide Zoo that allows your child to live a day in the shoes of a zookeeper. On top of all that, there are daily interactive animal experiences that you can explore for free, including the keeper talks, animal wildshow and free-flight show on the central lawns. Jump on the Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Zoo websites for more info on these mind-blowing experiences.

The brunch game is strong

You know what they say: breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so you want to make sure you get it right. The hardest part will be making a decision on which mouth-watering café to stop at. Luckily, we’ve done the legwork to help you narrow it down. If you’re vegan or veggo, you can’t go wrong with Red Lime Shack or the brandspanking-new Delicia that’s just landed in the area. For views that stretch for days, head straight for Folklore Café and enjoy your morning mug of chai while watching dolphins playing in the water below. Bask in the sunshine while eating your avo on toast at Drummerboy or soak up the history of the old Lipson Tea House building while dining at L. Law Café. For super-fresh native Australian ingredients, stop in at The Banksia Tree and support them in their efforts to become zero waste by 2020.

The views are better from the water

With Port River sitting right there, it’s hard to resist getting out for a float on the water. Our top pick is Adventure Kayaking SA, which offers guided kayak tours. We also hear on the grapevine that they’re about to launch their new Paddle ‘n’ Pint program in the evenings — yes, you read that right. Jump in a kayak, cruise around the water and then return to shore to reward yourself with a cold one (bookings are now open). If you want to go a touch faster than your arm-power allows on a kayak, hit up Dogtooth Marine and hire a boat for the afternoon. For those with kids (or those without), we highly recommend Dolphin Explorer, which will take you out for a river cruise to spot some local marine life. If the nature stuff isn’t up your alley, then the Portobello River Cruisers are your best bet — just sit back and relax in the comfort of a doughnut boat with a platter and a chilled bottle of wine. Yes please!

Let’s get historical

Port Adelaide is a unique combination of beautiful old buildings and vivacious street art. With the new Visit Port Adelaide app, you can take yourself on a selfguided tour of the heritage walks or follow in the footsteps of Wonderwalls — a festival that takes place in Port Adelaide every couple of years and sees plain walls transformed into colourful murals, thanks to some very talented street artists. For the history buffs among us, try starting at one end of Lipson Street and walking to the other. Along the way you’ll stumble across the South Australian Maritime Museum, National Railway Museum and the South Australian Aviation Museum. All in a matter of a five-minute walk.

Port Admiral.

Indulge in dinner and a drink

It’s time to refuel with some high-quality nosh — you deserve it. A stand-out spot that will get the salivary glands working overtime is Low and Slow, an American barbeque-style restaurant with a brisket that will have you dreaming of it for days. For a fiesta vibe, grab your amigos and and take them for ‘the real deal’ Mexican tacos at La Popular Taqueria. And if you’re wanting to set the mood with a special someone, you can’t go past Carmine and Co — an Italian restaurant serving quality food with a side of atmosphere, all without breaking the bank. You can’t go wrong with a pub meal, and Port Adelaide is serving them up in spades. The newly renovated Port Admiral has put a trendy spin on a classic establishment, the Lighthouse Wharf Hotel oozes traditional pub charm and The British looks out over Port River views, making it an ideal spot to wrap up your day. Looking for something lighter? Hit up one of the wine bars in the area such as Korked or Michonnes, and sip a top-quality drop with a platter on the side. You’ll also find SA fave Pirate Life serving up frothy brews, with food trucks rotating through from Thursday to Sunday. visitportadelaideandcoast cityofpae.sa.gov.au

glass windows and a working bell tower, passers-by would be forgiven for thinking that THE CHURCH was still operating as a place of worship in Gawler. One step through the front door though, and you’ll realise everything is not as it seems. Inside, THE CHURCH has been cleared of pews and renovated to create a traditional home, complete with all the luxuries you need for your next getaway. With some renovations and homely touches, the space feels cosy — especially when the sun hits the rainbow windows and lights up the living area. Summer evenings can be spent out the back in the large outdoor dining area and open gardens, while in winter the open kitchen and lounge is warmed by a crackling wood fire. Take your pick of bedrooms, with three to choose from — two queen-size and a double, one being downstairs. You’ll also find two bathrooms, a luxurious spa bath and a fully equipped kitchen. With a whopping list of amenities on the Airbnb page, you’ll feel right at home. The best part? The entire property is exclusively yours for the duration of your stay, so you can enjoy every inch. Above all else though, THE CHURCH has love soaked into its walls. Owner Karen married her late husband David here in July 2016, and for them THE CHURCH was

always more than just another place for people to visit. Seeing families and friends come together and make memories at their unique abode is special for Karen — a little nod to David as she carries out their dreams. Karen ensures that everyone feels completely at home when they visit THE CHURCH, personally greeting each guest whenever possible, and giving out local tips on what to experience and explore while they’re in one of South Australia’s top wine regions. “I feel extremely privileged to own a small piece of South Australia’s history in the Gawler/Barossa region, and I love sharing it with the travelling world. It is very much my home away from home, and I will retain it always in tribute to my beloved husband David and our wonderful life together,” she says. THE CHURCH is oozing with character, so make it your homebase the next time you’re exploring the neighbouring Barossa and beyond. TRAVEL REGIONAL: WOLF BLASS

Face to face with the Wolf Wolf Blass is as synonymous with the wine industry as cheese is with quince paste. While checking out the new Wine Museum that pays tribute to the man behind this iconic label, I got to shoot the breeze with the man himself… WORDS Em Worthington

- 12

R

ecently opening its doors in the main street of Hahndorf, the Wolf Blass Gallery and Museum embraces history while soaking up the present with beautiful surrounds, exceptional wines and delicious food. There are intimate spaces with textured chairs on cowhide rugs where you can grab a quiet drink and peruse some of the artefacts, and even a 17th-century wooden table all the way from France. It’s an eclectic mix, cleverly assembled, and the vibe is oh-so-welcoming. Whether you’re there for a quick stop or keen to sink your teeth into the story behind one of our wine industry’s most prominent figures, it’s well worth popping in.

A look at the past

There’s nothing stuffy about this museum — I was sucked in from the start as Wolf proudly walked me through the historic 1912 State Bank building. The Wine Museum houses his private collection of memorabilia, set in an eye-catching stone building. Regardless of whether you know much about the wine industry, it’s a wonderful snapshot of history.

“It’s my personal story but it’s a celebration of a vibrant industry that’s built around people sharing special moments and, of course, enjoying wine today,” he says. Born in Germany, Wolf was a selfconfessed “man full of fire”. He had the confidence to shake things up, and relished the challenge of proving critics wrong as he forged new techniques in the wine industry. A central glass cabinet chronicles a life of adventure, starting with his first job on a farm in post-war Germany, his sevenday-a-week consultancy work from the back of his VW and his political refugee notification. Then his journey to Australia and first vintage, foray into exporting overseas and his emergence as one of the most influential figures in the Australian wine industry. Wolf let me in on a life that’s been lived in the fast lane. “There have always been so many things going on, I haven’t had a chance to look back until now. But I’m

“THE GALLOPING TIMES ARE GONE… IT’S TIME TO CONSOLIDATE A LIFE OF ADVENTURE THAT MAY SPARK THE FIRE IN THE JOURNEY OF OTHERS.”

TRAVEL REGIONAL: WOLF BLASS

excited to share this history and hope it inspires people to understand that hard work pays off. You can’t make a fast buck — it’s about working hard at something you love and pushing yourself to maintain credibility for years to come.” Artefacts from floor to ceiling speak of incredible achievements over a 60-year career, dotted with nods to his personal interests, including his passion for skiing, the Adelaide Crows and Norwood Redlegs, and his signature bow ties. You can even get a close up of the first Melbourne Cup trophy — one of Wolf’s prized possessions, which showcases his love of horseracing and reiterates his sentiment: “Why keep it at home when I could have it here on display for everyone to enjoy?”

A perfect blend

Under the creative hand of his wife, Shirley, this historic building has been cleverly brought to life. It houses the museum, a state-of-the-art bar and a stylish boardroom, all opening onto a tranquil courtyard surrounded by green lawns, which is heavenly for indulging in a tipple or two. The restored vintage wine presses on display are an impressive ode to the craft of winemaking. And just like a Kinder surprise, a tiny heritage-listed building that was a school in 1864 remains in its place, now showcasing historic cooperage tools that were used to make the all-important wine barrels. When you consider how much of today’s industry relies on technology, it’s mind blowing how manual the process of getting grapes into your glass once was.

Photo: Laura Marslen.

A wine lover walks into a bar…

Wolfie’s Horseracing Bar is a striking seven-metre pressed-copper bar — the perfect place to dabble in Wolf Blass wines, as well as a handpicked collection of South Australian wines. “Every wine on our list has been carefully selected by our Foundation Trustee, Brian Walsh, or myself… so you know you’re drinking a quality drop,” he says. There’s also an impressive line-up of local beers and cider, as well as tea and coffee for those needing a caffeine kick, perfectly accompanied by a menu full to the brim with local produce on share platters, pizzas, tapas-dishes and cakes.

So, who is Wolf Blass?

When I came to meet this mind-blowingly successful man, I expected to be a little intimidated, yet I left feeling inspired by his story. Once just a boy with little to his name, working on an agricultural farm in post-war Germany, he followed his dreams to build a multi-million-dollar brand. Wolf’s story inspires me to back myself more. As Wolf says, “The galloping times are gone… it’s time to consolidate a life of adventure that may spark the fire in the journey of others” — though he’s showing no sign of slowing down any time soon. He’s deservedly proud of his achievements and yet, for all his grandeur, there he was, enjoying a glass of vino and insisting I share half a pizza with him. It’s a day I’ll never forget. Regardless of whether you catch a glimpse of the main man or not, popping into Wolf’s new Wine Museum for a gander and a glass is a sure way to put some fire in your belly.

ome to quality B&Bs, award-winning coastline, conservation parks, plenty of wineries and a brand new beachside waterpark, it’s no wonder this region swells up with sightseers, especially on weekends and school holidays. So, what’s on the to-do list when you arrive on the Fleurieu Coast? Plenty!

1. FOR THE WATER BABIES

Photo: Michael Waterhouse.

With 25 kilometres of clean sandy beaches, there’s lots of water fun to be had on the coast. Second Valley offers a bunch of activities for water babies with standup paddleboarding and kayaks for hire — jetty fishing, kayaking, diving and snorkelling. The beach is also a popular

dive training site, where amateur divers explore small caves and might even spot the stunning dome-shaped Lasseter's Reef, 300 metres from shore. With its enormous jetty and calm conditions, Rapid Bay is great for kids. It’s also a paradise for divers and snorkellers, with shipwrecks and marine life that look like they’re straight out of a movie set. If you’re lucky enough to have a boat, fang it out to Rapid Bay Head, where you’ll discover reefs, caves and plenty of marine life under the sea. The clear waters of Normanville beach make for ideal swimming for all ages, with the beach patrolled on weekends over summer. During warmer months, there’s a pontoon near the jetty that the kids will love.

TRAVEL REGIONAL: FLEURIEU COAST

2. FOR THE FITSPO

Grab your walking boots and head to Deep Creek Conservation Park. Hiking trails are plentiful through the area and range in ability and distance — anywhere between 60-minute to half-day treks. The Tappanappa Lookout and Stringybark Walk are hotspots for sightseers, and if you’re after more extreme walking trails, the Fleurieu Coast Visitor Information Centre will sort you out. For those wanting an easy stroll, Myponga Reservoir is a must, with loads of Instagrammable places to stop at and even enjoy a picnic along the way. Ingalalla Waterfalls in Second Valley Forest is just 500 metres from the car park and is the perfect place for a picnic, with tables and chairs ready to go. And of course, the worldfamous Heysen Trail, which runs for 1,200 kilometres from Cape Jervis to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, is a great one for the whole family. One of the most picturesque sections is the walk from Cape Jervis to Victor Harbor, where you’ll wind through rugged coastlines and wooded valleys and spot loads of wildlife along the way.

Smiling Samoyed Brewery.

3. FOR THE WINEYS

It’s not all about the great outdoors. The Fleurieu Coast is full of microbreweries that are buzzing with A-grade drops. Smiling Samoyed Brewery Overlooking Myponga Reservoir, this brewery invites you to pop in for a wine or one of their award-winning craft beers and a pizza. If weather permits, grab the pizza to go, head to the banks of the reservoir and dine with a view. The real highlight — apart from their amazing brews — is the beautiful samoyeds who love to hang out with guests. Forktree Brewing Set in a funky, jazzedup shearing shed and surrounded by nature, you can sample their beers on tap, wines and local cider. With an outdoor dining area and bar, it doubles as a great event space. Allusion Wines With outstanding views of Yankalilla Valley, this cosy cellar door is the perfect place to stop for a wine and a platter. For groups of 10 or more, they’ll fire up the wood-oven pizza, and there’s even a large play park to keep the kids occupied.

4. FOR THE KIDS

It’s a family affair on the Fleurieu Coast, with plenty of things to keep the little ones entertained. This year they welcomed a brand new waterpark at Normanville’s Beachside Holiday Park — it’s jungle themed, with seven slides. Hooray! Who likes to ride? You can hire free retro bikes, adult mountain bikes and youth mountain bikes as part of the Fleurieu Coast Free Bikes scheme. It’s the perfect way to explore Yankalilla, Myponga, Normanville and Carrickalinga. What about horse riding? With High Country Trails, you’ll experience the freedom of trotting through the dunes and shallows of Normanville Beach on horseback. For the teeny weenies under the age of nine, Horse Riding Normanville offers pony rides where parents can lead their kids around the property. With plenty of parks and playgrounds, kids are spoilt for choice. Lions Youth Park caters for all ages, with a skate park, basketball facilities and even a BMX track. There are two free electric barbeques under shelter, so families can stay all day. What about an interpretive hike? The Talisker Conservation Park guides you through a 19th-century mining and ore processing operation. And if you’re lucky enough to be on the coast for New Year’s Eve, it’s a kid’s wonderland, with a pageant and an early fireworks show on the beach. We hear anyone can enter a float in the pageant… so look out for a giant pineapple next year. What are you waiting for? Go and experience nature’s gift for yourself — the Fleurieu Coast, SA! @fleurieucoastmadebynature visitfleurieucoast.com.au 15 -

TRAVEL REGIONAL: LONGVIEW VINEYARD

S

et in the tiny town of Macclesfield, this picturesque estate holds a big spot in my heart as I got married here. I return time and time again — whether it’s for the premium wines, refined food, beautiful settings or vibrant events, it’s always the perfect place to create lasting memories with family and friends. Owned and run by brothers Mark and Peter Saturno, this cool-climate singlevintage vineyard has been winning awards and hearts on an international stage. With a penchant for premium wines and experiences since their first vintage in 2001, the boys and their specialised team know how to wow on all fronts. “For us, Longview is more than just a wine brand — it’s a way of life. Everything stems from our respect for this patch of land — our grapes, our food, our hospitality, our people. When people visit, we want them to feel relaxed, fed and quenched, taken care of in a way that only a family can,” Mark says. Put simply, Longview surprises and delights in more ways than one. So, let’s look at it four ways…

1. For the lovebirds

I have gorgeous memories of my own wedding here in 2011, and I've been lucky enough to be a guest at many other weddings in the very same spot — all different and perfectly suited to the couple who chose it for their special day. One thing that the crew at Longview does exceptionally well is understand that, beyond the picture-postcard setting, premium wines and mouth-watering food, the vibe on the day needs to reflect what matters to you and your beau. The events crew knows how to run a party and makes planning your day a breeze, so all that’s left to do is soak up the love. It’s not just the warmer seasons that are in hot demand here — with a generous verandah and plenty of open space indoors, Longview has got you covered even if the weather gods aren’t on your side. Better yet, Longview has started open days to make it simple to visualise your wedding day and chat with the team and suppliers. Check out upcoming dates for this festival for lovebugs and get in early to snag a great deal on upgrades when locking in your date.

2. For the foodies

A birthday, a romantic lunch, a family get-together, an engagement, a cocktail party, a baby shower, a work event… you name it, all manner of occasions are made when there’s exceptional food and wine on offer. And that’s what you’ll get with a visit to Longview’s Tasting Room. With miles of spectacular vineyard views, this impeccably-designed rustic space is ideal for any occasion or even just as an excuse for a Sunday drive. La Dolce Vita Catering crafts seasonal dishes with modern twists on traditional cuisine, served á la carte or as a shared tasting menu. However you choose to indulge your tastebuds, the food is perfectly accompanied with premium wines, so you can sink into a wine and culinary adventure you won’t forget. And for a bigger bonanza, groups of 20 or more can opt for a Longview long lunch in their heritage barn. Sign us up!

3. For the party people

Longview is definitely the place to head when you’re after a unique event. With year-round celebrations, including street art sensation the Piece Project, Porchetta Party, Paella parties, Winter Reds Festival — plus special events on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, long weekends and more — there’s always a vibrant mix of entertainment and excitement for all your senses. You’ll be spoilt for choice and, although each event is different, you’ll be hooked by their stamp of exceptional quality and plenty of gusto.

IT’S ALWAYS THE PERFECT PLACE TO CREATE LASTING MEMORIES WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

4. For the stayers

Imagine marvelling at oodles of stars at night and waking to the lush surroundings of the pristine rolling vineyards. Dream no longer — a stay in Longview’s four-star accommodation gives you all this and more. With a range of options, including the lovingly restored original homestead and contemporary suites, it’s a no-brainer for putting your feet up after attending a wedding or just smelling the roses on a relaxing getaway. @longviewvineyard longviewvineyard.com.au

magine waking up to the sound of birds chirping and watching the sunrise over golden cliffs, while floating along one of the most picturesque stretches of the Murray River. Well, that’s exactly what you can expect every morning when you wake up on one of Griffens Marina’s houseboats. In Blanchetown, just 90 minutes from Adelaide, this unique river journey is about creating memories all year round. Blessed with a gorgeous Mediterranean climate, the Riverland offers hot sunny days, cold nights, frosty mornings and balmy breezes — perfect for boating.

- 18

Owner and local legend Miriam Griffen has a houseboat to suit everyone, with all five vessels decked out in features that set them apart. Whether you’re part of a big group, a family or couple, or are on a girls’ trip away, you’re guaranteed one hell of an iconic holiday experience. But which houseboat suits you best? Scallywag and Scamp are ace for couples wanting a romantic and relaxing weekend away for two to four people. For medium-size parties, Reflections would be your ideal boat. It’s a fabulous four-bedroom houseboat and perfect for two couples wanting their own ensuites. A little larger in size, sleeping up to 10 people, is the Adventurer houseboat. If space and comfort are on your must-have list, then this grand old lady is the boat for you. The Adventurer boasts four queensize bedrooms and a bunk room — or, as we like to call it, a kids’ retreat. But for even larger groups, we personally recommend the cream of the crop, the Daydreamer. This stylish houseboat sleeps up to 12 guests, with six queensize bedrooms, a spacious lounge area, fully-equipped stainless-steel kitchen and large panoramic views of the river. And the

cherry on top? You can pop a bottle and relax in the massive heated spa on the top deck while you watch the sun go down. Whichever you choose, Miriam and her family are dedicated to making your river journey the absolute best. “We’re here to make your houseboat escape extra special, and we aim to have everything you need for the most relaxing holiday ever. We’re proud of our small family business and love sharing our special ‘backyard’ on the Murray,” she says. Everyone should experience the joy and luxury of being captain of your own boat on, what we’re told, is one of the best and least crowded houseboat destinations in Australia. @griffensmarinahouseboats griffensmarina.com.au

f you ever need an incentive to whisk the family away for a weekend in the Riverland, or to grab your lover for a romantic mid-week getaway, head straight to Crossfield Cottage. Located in Barmera, 1.6 kilometres from Lake Bonney and nestled among vineyards, fruit orchards and natural bushland, this picturesque country cottage is a perfect place to call home. With two large bedrooms plus a retreat bedroom, stunning ensuites, separate lounge and dining, self-contained kitchen and an enormous landscaped garden, Crossfield Cottage has everything you need for a relaxing getaway. Enjoy the luxury of an outside bath under the stars? Don’t mind if we do.

Owners and outstanding hosts Mark and Carolyn Huckel bought the 1920s property in 2015 and spent two years breathing new life into it. The original owners would be so proud of their renovation, which has maintained the integrity of the house and preserved as much history as possible. “We had always wanted to create a B&B but we’d never found the right place or location. Then the Barmera cottage came up, so we jumped on it,” Carolyn says. With vintage telephones, farming tools and kitchen scales, and replica war medals, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a bygone era. Even the original kitchen stove has been salvaged and repurposed in the outdoor area.

The house has been home to many a love story, which you’ll hear all about from Mark and Carolyn. “The Crossfield’s favourite courting song was The Seven Daffodils, so we’ve kept their love song alive with a stunning painting by Jamahl Pollard, a talented Riverland artist with impaired vision.” In between history tours of the house, they’ll fill you in with local knowledge and hot tips on where to eat, explore and play. “The Riverland has fast become one of SA’s most popular holiday destinations. With wineries, cellar doors and water sports at your fingertips, we encourage all Adeladies to visit our region,” Mark says. And as an extra perk, guests will receive a complementary bottle of Riverland wine and fresh flowers as a welcome. You can also opt in, or out, of a delicious gourmet brekky with all the trimmings, and order platters full of local produce. With so much love and care poured into this home, Mark and Carolyn have created an affordable sanctuary for people to enjoy. Beachfront bliss at Club Med’s luxury sister resorts Every day is a pinch-yourselfmoment in the Maldives. It’s exactly how you imagine it, but better — welcome to Club Med’s sister resorts. WORDS Hayley Pearson

P

rivate beaches, warm crystal-clear waters, luxury overwater suites and exceptional all-inclusive dining experiences. There are a gazillion reasons to visit this Instagram-perfect destination, and with two Club Meds just a nine-minute boat ride from each other, you’re spoilt for choice. Both Club Med Maldives’ resorts are luxurious and surrounded by out-of-this-world views, but if you’re after vibe and a plethora of experiences, Club Med Kani is your gal. If you’re more into relaxing and switching off in a calming and ultra-fancy environment, Club Med Finolhu Villas is for you. We couldn’t decide which one to book, so we stayed at both! But, you take your pick...

Club Med Kani

A luxury, fun-filled, party island resort where families, singles, lovers and friends come together to have the time of their lives. Club Med started with a hippy kind of vibe, and although the offerings have become more luxe, the heart and soul of the resorts remains the same. Their motto is ‘No worries’, and they 100 percent stand by it. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by their friendly staff — cheering and clapping us off the boat. They took our bags and escorted us to our villas and we seriously wiped our hands of any stress. It’s always Hakuna Matata on Club Med Kani. Club Med Kani.

Start your holiday with Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines flies from Adelaide to the Maldives with some amazing deals. On board your flight, all food and beverage choices are included in the ticket, including red and white wine, Singapore Slings and other yummy alcoholic bevvies. Flying from Adelaide, you may even be treated to a delicious Maggie Beer ice cream for dessert. I love inflight movies, so I signed up to be a KrisFlyer member — this means I got access to about 200 hours of additional entertainment. You can even set up your ultimate playlist ahead of your flight. Speak to your local Flight Centre Travel Expert who can find you the best airfares to package with your Club Med Holiday.

@singaporeair

You can, of course, choose to relax and spend your days kicking back in a hammock or squeeze as many once-in-alifetime experiences as humanly possible into your holiday. We chose the latter. As part of your all-inclusive stay, do what we did and whack on a snorkel and swim with schools of tropical fish (it’s incredible), try your hand at sailing, kayaking... we had a big old laugh at ourselves trying to stand-up paddle board. You can jump in the pool for some aqua aerobics, sweat it up at sunset yoga or, like us, find yourself dancing to LMFAO in a giant foam party. And with a two-kilometre stretch of private beach, it’s an Instagram-lover’s dream.

Club Med Kani Overwater Suites.

For Adeladies who want to sightsee, the resort can arrange for you to visit the islets by seaplane, so you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the colourful lagoons and coral reefs. This isn’t included in your stay but it’s well worth a few extra dollars. Food is all-inclusive — and OMG the buffet is sensational. Every day is different. We dined on all kinds of fresh, worldly cuisines for brekky, lunch and dinner. When one restaurant closes, another opens, so you’ll never go hungry. In fact, I’d suggest bringing stretchy shorts because you may leave with a little excess baggage, if you know what I mean. For adults, the Sunset Bar is like something from a movie — gorgeous beach views, friendly people and endless cocktails, all included as part of your stay. Sometimes we started our day at 9am with a Pina Colada. Please don’t judge us. For kids (I left mine at home), Club Med Kani is a wonderland. With non-stop beach activities on offer and kids’ clubs for four to 10 year olds, they’ll be in their element. Best of all, it’s all included in your stay. Club Med Kani offers a range of options for accommodation, from Garden and

Beachfront rooms to the famous Overwater Suites. We like to get fancy, so we stayed in the latter. They’re all spacious, airy and come with a gigantic bed and a stunning bath overlooking the bright blue water. You also have your own personal deck with direct ocean access. Watch out for reef sharks — I never thought I’d say this but they’re kind of cute… and harmless, so I’ve heard. Club Med Kani is fun, vibey and luxurious. I loved every second.

rying to juggle kids, work, cooking and, of course, Netflix, leaves you with very little time to exercise outside. So having club-quality workout equipment, like a treadmill, in the comfort of your own home changes everything. You can go for a morning stroll in your pjs with no judgement, smash out a four-kilometre run while dinner is on the stove and answer a bunch of work emails during a quick 10-minute uphill walk. Fitness Warehouse has three mega stores in SA, and they’re experts in every

piece of workout equipment you could possibly need. They’ve got something for every budget, including treadmills, steppers, rowers and weights. So you don’t have ‘all the gear and no idea’, we’ve enlisted the help of SA’s own qualified PT and Head of Training at Fitness Warehouse, Simon Mitchell, to share a home workout using simple equipment. We should also mention that Simon was one of the cast trainers for the upcoming Star Wars movie, The Rise Of Skywalker, so he knows what he’s talking about.

hen it comes to fitness, there’s a lot of information out there. One of the best things you can do if you’re trying to make some changes is to keep them simple and achievable. Far out, I sound boring already — but bear with me. Despite the fact I’ve provided a particular type of workout below, I’m not here to put one style of exercising over another. At the end of the day, if you just get moving in a way that’s safe and enjoyable, then you’re on your way to kicking some goals. So, if those gyms on Instagram that look like a loud, sweaty nightclub don’t appeal to you, the good news is that there are other options. The workout below can be done anywhere, at any time, and you only need to do something like this a couple of times a week. Throw a long walk into the mix and you’ll start to reap the benefits. This workout incorporates upper and lower body exercises, as well as some cross patterning, which is good for your neural pathways. Do each exercise one after the after, with one minute rest between each round. Complete four rounds.

1. Goblet squat with kettlebell x 10 2. Push ups with fitball x 10 3. Fitball hamstring curls x 10 4. Pull backs with tube x 10 5. Bird dogs x 20 6. Skipping or jumping jacks x 1 minute 7. One-minute rest This super-simple workout gives you a big pay-off as far as burning calories is concerned. As a parent of two little ones myself, I like this type of workout because of the amount of time it takes. If you include a short warm-up, it can all be done in less than 20 to 25 minutes. Want to make it easier or harder? Just lower or increase the amount of reps, rounds or resistance. We’d love to help get you started at Fitness Warehouse, so pop in store to pick up a special Adelady At Home pack for $74.99 (RRP $92) which includes: • 1 x 6kg Kettlebell • 1 x Xpeed fitness ball • 1 x medium resistance tube • 1 x Tempo skipping rope Remember to keep it simple, and find the fun in your exercise.

was honoured to MC this incredible event, which saw more than 6,000 people walk through the gates at Torrens Park to celebrate 100 years of Scotch College Adelaide. The place was buzzing with food trucks, live music, dance, drama, sheep shearing, whip cracking and plenty of kids’ games, including a giant game of everyone’s favourite, Guess Who? Not to mention the old scholars, including the likes of Woodside Cheese Wrights and Tomfoolery Wines, who joined forces for a cheese and wine masterclass that left tastebuds dancing.

As day turned to night, it came alive with a mind-blowing light show, the kind you’d expect at a world-class festival. The day was an inspiring collaboration between old scholars, current staff, students, families and the public. I rocked up alone but have never felt so connected. et’s face it, we’re all time-poor, so we thought we’d help you with this emotional journey and give you a mini tour of the place I trusted with both of my children — Goodstart Early Learning. Whether or not it’s the right early learning provider for you, I hope this helps you find the perfect place for your little one. And if we whet your whistle with a mini tour, pop into your nearest Goodstart Early Learning centre and see it for yourself.

What can you expect from Goodstart?

Children can join the Goodstart family from as early as six weeks old and attend right through until they’re ready for school. Goodstart offers a kindergarten program with long day hours, which is a massive plus for parents who need greater flexibility than 9am to 3pm. With degree-qualified early childhood teachers and stimulating learning environments, as well as play-based learning, you know your children are in great hands.

FEEL GOOD: GOODSTART EARLY LEARNING

Meet the Goodstart professionals What are the educators like? In my experience, the Goodstart early childhood teachers and educators are all wonderful with children and passionate about early learning. I loved that the educators would always communicate openly with us about what our children were up to that day and how they were progressing with their learning. So let’s meet some of these amazing professionals…

Photo: Supplied.

Martha Touloumis, Senior Educator, Goodstart Payneham Martha is the nursery room team leader at Goodstart Payneham and is passionate about Goodstart’s Key Educator Relationships approach. “One of the things I love about my job is the deep connection we make with families. For all the children in my care, I take the time to understand their daily routines and rituals. The child’s experience each day in our centres is our focus — it’s not about rushing through daily tasks, it’s about building a genuine trusting connection and providing the best possible learning environment for your child.”

Sarah Yates-Taylor, Early Childhood Teacher, Goodstart Clearview Sarah delivers the Goodstart Kindergarten program — an evidence-based, governmentapproved program specifically designed for children aged three to five years and based on the Early Years Learning Framework. “As an early childhood teacher, I feel so privileged to play a critical role in the learning outcomes of our children. Every day I see the children’s faces light up as they learn, play and explore in the small group-learning setting we offer, helping to prepare them for school. I’m able to tailor experiences to each child’s individual needs, interests and development levels.”

Katice Martin, Centre Director, Goodstart Underdale Katice has worked in the early learning sector for more than 15 years and as a centre director, is the go-to for families attending Underdale. “Starting early learning can be a daunting time for parents but we are here to help. There is a lot to wrap your head around, like selecting which session option best suits your family — we offer nine, 10 and 12-hour sessions. And then there is the childcare subsidy — you can rest assured we can help you navigate that as well to help minimise your childcare out-of-pocket costs.”

A parent’s view

Zoe Mitchell’s four-year-old son, Jasper, loves attending Goodstart Early Learning at Payneham. Why did you choose Goodstart Early Learning for your child? We chose Goodstart because of its great reputation and it proved to be very inviting when we had our first visit there. The team at Goodstart was open, friendly and informative. Jasper and I were invited to stay as long as we wished and this allowed Jasper to explore and play. Goodstart has been beneficial to Jasper's learning and development as well as his confidence and social skills. When Jasper started at Goodstart, he was shy and hesitant to leave me. I felt 'mum guilt'. However, with the reassurance and care of his educators, he became comfortable. I love being included in his day when I am at work by reading his learning stories and viewing photos of him involved in activities on Storypark. Jasper has a lot of energy to burn and the outdoor area at Goodstart Payneham is one of his happy places. He adores the space to move and to develop his physical skills. He often talks about his educators at home. He feels safe and secure when he is with them and I know this connection ensures that his days at Goodstart are enjoyable.

Now, my job is talking to thousands of people on the radio every morning on Nova 919. So I know firsthand that performing arts is the best way to empower your child with the confidence to shine in all areas of life. And who knows — they might be the next Greatest Showman. The Australian Company of Performing Arts (ACPA) is an Adelaide-based studio offering kids a complete education in all facets of the performing arts. From just two years of age, the ACPA introduces students to a world of fun, with

jazz, tap, hip hop, ballet, music theatre, song and drama. For littlies, Ready Set Dance is the ultimate way to enhance your child’s confidence, coordination, creativity and, of course, make a whole bunch of new friends. With six purpose-built studios, a pilatesfocused gym and a separate vocal studio, students have the opportunity to get a taste for showbiz and perform in front of a live audience twice a year. If your child is keen to extend themselves, the school can transition students into the real world of performing arts and provide a variety of secondary and tertiary qualification options, mentoring and personal coaching.

Adeladies Glenda Green and Janet Hayes are the creative legends behind the program and have always wanted to create a supportive and nurturing environment where kids are encouraged to explore and develop their (ninja) skills at their own pace. Each program is based around the key stages of a child’s development. Both have a wealth of experience to draw on. Glenda has spent the last 22 years building and delivering successful activity programs for children and adults while Janet has a professional business background — so they know what they’re doing. They’re affiliated with Gymnastics Australia, and all the instructors are fully accredited, so movement is their jam.

As the mum of a seven-year-old ninja, I can vouch that it’s not just about the kids — Glenda and Janet create a warm, welcoming, interactive community vibe between parents, grandparents, carers and instructors. Best of all, they’ve got two venues — St Andrew’s School (Walkerville) and St John’s Grammar Junior School (Belair). In the words of my seven-year-old son, Austin: “It was the best day of my entire life.” And seven year olds don’t lie. @22.too

Hallelujah for flexible school holiday programs for kids aged three to 12. Either a half or full– day holiday class is the perfect chance for your kids to have the time of their lives and make new friends at the same time. Each day offers a variety of activities, so they’ll never get bored.

If the idea of stepping out of your comfort zone and posing for photos terrifies you, you’re not alone. Before we rocked up to our 1950s photoshoot, we had no idea what to expect. Yet within minutes of meeting the creator, Fiora Christou, it all made perfect sense. Adelaide besties Fiora and Gina have shared many of life’s challenges. Stressful

jobs, raising children — some with special needs — marital breakups, illness and self-doubt were all in the mix. Then one day, Fiora decided to take Gina interstate to do a retro photography session. After a day full of fun and giggles, Fiora took this lesson of empowerment and decided to start her own photography studio — with the full support of her friend. Two years later, the Paperpashes doors opened in Croydon and Fiora’s dream to spread joy and empower women of all sizes began. So how does Paperpashes work? You are greeted with a hair and makeup team ready to turn you into your wildest dream. A 1950s pin-up girl, a cute-butnaughty sailor, a gorgeous mermaid, a sexy lingerie model or a powerful girl-boss — with a couple of fake eyelashes, you can be whoever you want. Fiora sources her outfits, costumes, wigs, props and shoes from all over the world and will happily discuss your style and needs before the shoot, just in case she needs to order something extra fabulous, just for you.

WORDS Hayley Pearson After your morning of primping, preening, pampering and, of course, eating, it's time for your real task of the day — posing. Fiora’s all-girl squad will make you feel comfortable and empowered as they guide you to get beautiful pictures. After all the fun, you’re left with incredible memories and the photographs to prove it wasn’t, in fact, a dream. And at this point, you realise there was never anything to be afraid of. “We promise to guide you throughout the whole fun-filled experience. After all, we want you to shamelessly enjoy your day, your free time and your glowing, decadent self,” Fiora says. This is the perfect experience to do with your bestie, your sister, your mama or even by yourself. If you know someone who needs a little confidence boost and maybe a big LOL, go and meet our friend Fiora. You’ll love her, just like we did. @paperpashes paperpashes.com.au

FEEL GOOD: HIIVE

Alan Page just wants local artists and musicians to showcase their work, so he created Hiive and is helping revive shopping centres in the process. WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Wayne Pearson

D

espite his humbleness, Alan Page is the hero of this story — and yep, he’s doing it for the cause, not the applause. Hiive is a pop-up, not-for-profit creative gallery where local musicians and artists are given the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work. The idea is that they fill empty spaces in shopping centres with colour, energy and good vibes. Step inside a Hiive pop-up and you’ll be greeted with paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, wood crafts, candles and even live music. The idea is the result of a perfect collision of Alan’s past and present. Alan studied fine arts at university, toured with several bands and ended up working his way to the top in retail management and marketing. He’s got it all — the creativity and the brains. Hiive originally filled an empty shop at Brickworks but quickly outgrew the space. It now has a permanent gallery in Houghton and a pop-up at The Metro.

But they’re hungry for more. “We’d love to have Hiive pop-ups in shopping centres and along strips all over SA. The more locations, the more local talent we can support and the more foot traffic we can bring into these centres — it’s a win-win.” Plus, because all profits go back into supporting the artists, Hiive doesn’t charge a cent for creatives to display their work and only takes a 20 percent commission for anything they sell. “Along the way, I’ve met so many artists and musicians who are lost and have no direction. They just need an opportunity and that’s what Hiive is about. We encourage artists to work in the gallery, where they can talk about their passion and also network, which is so important to growing their business.” Musicians get to play their music in the gallery and also perform to music lovers at their many pop-up events. And Alan has already seen results. “One band we have supported from the beginning, and helped produce a demo, EP and videos, is Madura Green, who has gone on to play festivals and is played on Triple J,” he says. The work is all by unknown creatives, and most come with a story. One that stood out on my visit was the artist behind

“WE ENCOURAGE ARTISTS TO WORK IN THE GALLERY WHERE THEY CAN TALK ABOUT THEIR PASSION AND NETWORK.” a series of John Lennon paintings. At 60, Robert Martin had never picked up a paint brush, then he had an accident, falling from a ladder. Afterwards, he couldn’t remember his name but had a strange desire to paint John Lennon. And now you can buy his amazing work and hang it in your home. “I just want emerging artists and musicians to have a space where they can showcase their work, back themselves and feel like they belong,” he says. Not only does Hiive give consumers another reason to visit shopping centres, but as a result, it helps to increase overall retails sales. “The sales in The Metro are up on average 14 percent since Hiive popped up in the centre — this is what we can do for retail hubs that might have empty shops.” Personally, I’m crazy in love with the whole Hiive concept. I even encouraged my dad, a budding South Australian photographer, to showcase his work in the latest pop-up. (See his work on Insta: @waynepearsonsnaps) If you’re an up-and-coming artist or musician, or if you’re in the retail biz and need to fill a shop, contact Hiive today and be part of this creative and uplifting movement. @Hiivesa

FEEL GOOD: MY PRIVATE MIDWIFE

Turn your pregnancy frown upside down. WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Naomi Giatas

F

rom the second I saw the double line on my pregnancy test, I was overcome with joy — and absolute terror. There was no going back. I was about to grow a baby inside me and in nine months, it would have to come out, somehow! For some, pregnancy can be scary — and because we’re all aware of how hard it can be to actually fall pregnant, we often feel guilty admitting it. Thankfully, there are wonderful humans out there who can help you through that scary time and make the whole experience wonderful. Kate Bergamasco is one of these angels. Known as My Private Midwife, Kate is a highly skilled midwife who provides emotional and physical care for women and their partners throughout pregnancy. She’s like a mum-figure and parenting hotline all in one. Within minutes of meeting Kate, all your worries start to dissolve. So, apart from being an angel, what does she do? I sat down with this wonderful lady and squeezed all the juicy info out of her.

What is hypnobirthing and how does it work? Hypnobirthing is a type of birthing class where parents learn how to achieve a deep state of relaxation, which helps them to experience less discomfort during labour. The theory is that many mums are worried about how they will manage the pain of giving birth. When we get scared, we tense up. When we tense up, we experience more discomfort, so hypnobirthing aims to remove the fear and the pain. During the process, mums and partners learn how to relax the mind and body using breathing techniques and visualisation. Partners become integral in supporting mums, which is why we encourage them to go through the process, too. Having a loving, supportive person there, who knows their partner’s needs, allows the mum to stay in her positive hypnotic zone. The Hypnobirthing Australia™ course is unique because we focus on having a positive experience, no matter how the baby is birthed. How early do you need to start? I suggest that mums begin classes any time from 24 to 32 weeks. The earlier you start, the more time you have to practise and to feel very calm during pregnancy. Does hypnobirthing help with tearing? Most definitely. Mums learn to ‘breathe’ their baby down — a bit like going to the toilet — which means they’re less likely to tear because it gives the perineum time to stretch slowly.

“HYPNOSIS IS SUCH A VALUABLE TOOL FOR EVERYONE, NO MATTER WHAT TYPE OF BIRTH THEY WANT OR NEED.” Biggest myths? It’s not just for hippies. Hypnosis is such a valuable tool for everyone, no matter what type of birth they want or need. Everyone can benefit from learning how to achieve self-hypnosis to manage stress and anxiety. You don't just tuck and roll once the baby is born, you offer ongoing support? Once the baby arrives and the new parents arrive home with a gorgeous bub, I can support them through the newborn stage. Hypnosis is also useful at this time to manage the sleep deprivation. As a qualified lactation consultant, I also offer breastfeeding support and can discuss emotional health. Many families find they have hundreds of questions and concerns within the first couple of months, and I pride myself on providing compassionate care. There’s no such thing as a silly question. What made you start this amazing journey? I realised that most hospitals offer information about pain-relieving drugs, interventions and hospital policy but very little about natural methods to manage pain. I wanted to offer what was missing in hospitals. And, I love that I get the opportunity to empower couples during the most exciting time in their lives. @myprivatemidwife myprivatemidwife.com.au

O

ne minute you’re yanking up your grey tights and making sure your Clarks are looking sharp, the next it’s your school reunion and those tights haven’t been seen or heard of for decades. This year I celebrate 20 years since graduating from Walford, and when I saw the invite to the reunion, it made me nostalgic and full of warm-fuzzies. For more than 125 years, Walford has maintained a dedication to excellence in the education of girls. From Reception to Year

12, they offer a friendly, family-orientated environment where each student is encouraged to be the best she can be. The only thing that makes me sad is my two kids, being boys, will never get to experience the Walford warm-fuzzies, like I did. So, as I open my diary with ‘I love Jonathan Taylor Thomas’ written on the cover, here’s an ode to Walford and why I get all the feels every single time I think about my years there. Happy 20 years to the class of 1999!

FEEL GOOD: WALFORD

Message from the Principal, Rebecca Clarke 1. The teachers

When I first started at Walford in ’94, I was stunned by how one-on-one the teachers were. Strong, passionate, respectful, understanding and inspiring are just a few words to describe the Walford educators. They coached me through adolescence and lit that fire in my belly to go on and follow my dreams. One teacher in particular needs a special shout-out: Mrs Butler, our fiery South African drama teacher. At 15, we would do regular group meditation and sing the mantra, “I like myself”. She taught us to never doubt ourselves and gave me and countless others a bucket load of strength, leadership, confidence and drive.

2. High achievers

This is what I love most about Walford. It’s not about encouraging students to only pick careers that generate the most income or profile, it’s about teaching them that whatever career they choose to follow, they can be the best at it. Whether you want to be a lawyer, an artist, a kindy teacher, a heart surgeon, a social media expert or a super-savvy girl boss, Walford will motivate you to excel.

3. The friendships

My Walford girls are still my best friends. Ask any Walford alumni and I bet they’ll tell you the same thing. From tweens and teenagers to young adults and becoming

mums together, they are some of the most treasured friendships a woman can have.

4. The all-girl environment

Having no boys at school meant I could embrace my awkward-looking years to the max. It also meant that the focus was solely and unapologetically on girls. I loved that we were always encouraged to take the lead, which would inevitably extend beyond our school years. I think my parents were the most happy about the all-girl thing as they knew me too well — I would have been extremely distracted in a co-ed environment. Never fear, though, there were still plenty of opportunities to socialise with boys outside of the classroom.

5. The next-level facilities

While a lot has changed in the 20 years since I graduated, Walford has always boasted new attractions and facilities that you won’t find at other schools. This year, they welcomed the incredibly hi-tech Ellen Benham Science Centre, named to honour the legacy of Walford’s second principal, Miss Ellen Benham, who in 1912 introduced science to Walford. And to support girls interested in athletics, the school erected an out-of-this-world sports centre, dance studio and gymnasium. With many more plans to unfold in the next couple of years, it’s an exciting time to be a Walford girl.

At Walford, one of the ways we’re helping students be future ready is through our science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) focus. Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields, especially at industry and leadership level, and it’s a problem we’re tackling head on. Our biennial trip to NASA space camp, last year’s live link to the International Space Station and our newly opened Ellen Benham Science Centre have ignited curiosity and the engagement of our students in STEM. We are proud that this year, 60 percent of our graduates have chosen a university pathway in a STEM-related field. When each student graduates from Walford, we expect she be well equipped to choose the pathway that is right for her, having developed the confidence, skills, capabilities and attitudes that will enable her to lead a full life.

FEEL GOOD: DEED & DIVIDE

Hands up if you don’t actually know what conveyancing is. All we knew was that most people need it at some point in their lives. Cue Ben and Kylie. WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS The Marketing Department

I

n the past, we’d adopted a ‘fake it till you make it’ attitude, and relied on the knowledge of partners, parents and trusty old Google. That is, until we met Deed & Divide — a husband and wife duo in Unley who (very patiently) explained the ins and outs of conveyancing to us. Ben and Kylie removed all of the overwhelming aspects of a service that most people will need to use once in their lives, and made us feel like complete know-it-alls. And to be honest, now that we’re equipped with the answers, conveyancing isn't so daunting after all. So, let us pass on our pearls of wisdom to you.

WTF is conveyancing? The main job of a conveyancer is to transfer the ownership of the legal title of a property from one person to another. You only need a conveyancer if you're buying a house, right? Wrong. Conveyancers assist with so many different things, such as land division, commercial leasing, change of name, family and matrimonial transfers and settlements, deceased estates, caveats, creation and discharge of encumbrances, granting, variation and extinguishment of easements. Chances are, a lot of these tasks might not seem relevant to you now, but rest easy that if these words ever pop up in your life, you know to call Deed & Divide. Who uses a conveyancer? A conveyancer is your go-to-gal (or guy) if you’re going to buy or sell property, need to correct a title due to someone passing away, or even undertake a project and divide up some land. What mistakes can a conveyancer save you from? Conveyancers protect you by keeping you informed throughout the process. The most common mistake is entering a contract for

- 38

“NEVER SIGN ANYTHING BEFORE SEEKING YOUR CONVEYANCER’S ADVICE. IT’S ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.” a property by agreeing to conditions that may not be achievable, such as a finance approval date that is not achievable. By speaking with a conveyancer first, you'll avoid foreseeable problems, such as avoiding penalty interest for an overdue settlement. At what point in the process do you rope in Deed & Divide? The earlier the better. You don’t need to wait until you’re ready to sign a contract. Contact them as soon as you decide to buy or sell, and never sign anything before seeking your conveyancer’s advice. It's always better to be safe than sorry. If you've got the image of a scary businessman wearing a power suit in your mind when you think of a conveyancer, erase it. With more than 18 years in the biz, Deed & Divide brings a refreshing outlook and is open to any questions you might have. Plus, they'll include you in the process and educate you along the way. So next time you're in need of some conveyancing, don't shudder — get Deed & Divide on side and empower yourself with knowledge and confidence. deedanddivide.com.au/adelady

FEEL GOOD: ADELAIDE EYE AND LASER CENTRE

The eyes have it How do you MC a sporting match if you can’t see the scoreboard? Nova 919’s Jarrod Walsh puts his eyes to the test. WORDS Jarrod Walsh

Six months ago I had laser eye surgery after a recommendation from my Nova919 workmate, Jarrod Walsh. I don’t normally trust him (lol) but when he said his procedure was life changing, he was right! It’s his 10-year anniversary of clear vision, so if you’re considering dropping your glasses for good, hopefully his story inspires you. Hayley x

I

t’s as clear as this: getting laser eye surgery was the best investment I’ve ever made in my life. See what I did there? I said, “It’s as clear as this” because in reality, it hasn’t always been that way. Ten years ago, I was 25 and trying to live life as normally as possible. Playing sport, heading to the footy, going to the movies with mates and yes, the occasional night out on the town. The thing is, these activities were all affected by one simple thing — my vision. I was squinting at the scoreboard at Footy Park, I couldn’t see anything at the movies and I had to guess where the hockey ball was on the field. I went to get my eyes tested and the optometrist suggested I wear glasses. I gave it a go, but I found them annoying and inconvenient, and it didn’t suit my lifestyle as I couldn’t wear them playing sport and usually forgot them while out at events.

A colleague of mine recommended Adelaide Eye and Laser Centre (AELC), so I went in for a consultation to see if I was eligible. It turns out I was and, nerves aside, I booked in to have a procedure that’s proven, predictable, customised to the individual and provides excellent results in eye laser surgery — LASIK. Ten years on and I want all of you foureyed peeps out there to know there’s nothing to be scared of because: • there was zero pain in the process • I was in and out of the procedure within an hour • I literally drove myself into the AELC the next day for a follow-up appointment • the care given by the doctors and staff was second to none • for me, a month after the procedure, it felt like I was seeing everything in HD and my follow-up appointment showed I now had 20/20 vision. Boom! Honestly, it was life changing way back when I had it done, and 10 years on, nothing has changed. It’s still one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made. Now I work at Adelaide Oval every weekend and I can see the scoreboard and the crowd that I’m talking to. I play club hockey and even though my skills haven’t improved, at least I can now see the ball. At the movies I no longer have to sit in the front row to see the screen. Best of all, I can clearly see my wife and young daughter, whether they’re right next to me or running up Largs Bay jetty on a summer’s evening as the sun sets across this beautiful city.

If poor vision is affecting your life, I highly recommend doing your research and considering laser eye surgery as an option. I chose Adelaide Eye and Laser Centre because they are exceptional at what they do, and they use technology that is current and at the forefront of eye laser surgery while still being predictable, proven and customised to suit your individual eyes. So if you are thinking about dropping your glasses, start the chat today. For me, it's a decision I will never regret — even 10 years later. Jarrod x

Pour in the melted butter and continue to blitz until combined. • Press the biscuit mixture into the brownie tin and bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside. • Meanwhile, make the topping by adding the cherries, coconut, food colouring and condensed milk into the food processor. Pulse until pink and well combined. Stir through until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth and glossy. • Pour icing over the slice and spread with a pallet knife. • For best results, leave to set in the fridge for 2–3 hours before slicing.

• Preheat oven to 160°C. Line baking tray with non-stick baking paper. • Place the oats, flour, sugar, coconut, FruChocs and cinnamon in a bowl. Stir to combine. • Place golden syrup and butter in a small saucepan and simmer over low heat for 3–4 minutes or until melted, stirring continuously. • Add bicarbonate of soda and water to the golden syrup mixture. Stir to combine. When it begins to foam, pour into the oat mixture and stir well to combine. • Roll mixture into golfball-sized balls and place on baking tray, allowing room to spread. Flatten with palm into a cookie shape and bake for 8–12 minutes or until a deep golden colour. • Cool slightly on trays before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Gourmet mac and cheese This fancy twist on an old favourite takes mac and cheese to the next level. Time 40 mins Serves 4 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ cup chopped chives 2 tbsp plain flour 3 ½ cups milk, or as needed 1 ½ cups cream, or as needed 200g Beston’s Edwards Crossing Gruyère, shredded* 1 cup shredded cheddar Sea salt 500g dried elbow pasta Freshly ground black pepper ⅔ cup breadcrumbs ⅓ cup freshly grated parmesan 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 30g unsalted butter *Avoid grating the rind as it’s not edible and will ruin the texture of the dish.

• Preheat oven to 180°C. • Heat a saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté for about 1 minute or until fragrant. Add chives and reduce the heat to medium-low, whisk in the flour. • Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, before bringing the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Simmer, whisking often, for about 10–12 minutes (do not allow the sauce to boil). • Reduce the heat to medium-low and gradually whisk in the gruyère and cheddar cheeses. Remove the pan from the heat and season to taste with pepper. • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Stir in the pasta and cook, stirring often to prevent it from sticking together, for about 8 minutes or until tender. Drain well. • Stir the pasta into the hot cheese sauce. Season to taste again with salt and pepper and place in skillet or baking dish. • In a small bowl, toss the breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, parsley and melted butter to mix well. Season with salt and sprinkle evenly over the pasta mix. • Bake in oven until the topping is golden brown (about 2–5 minutes), careful not to let it burn. • Let stand at room temperature for 5 minutes before serving.

BREAD

W

hen I entertain at home, I imagine myself as the ‘hostess with the mostess’, totally carefree as I prepare a six-course meal. In reality, I’m usually a flustered mess with inedible hors d’oeuvres. At least there’s always cold Champagne — it’s nearly impossible to mess that up. Fortunately, Romeo’s shiny new 40th store, located on the corner of Rundle Mall and Pulteney Street, has everything you need to pull off an impressive evening with a quarter of the work. Whether you’re after ready-made dishes, fresh salads or just something pretty to pop on the table, Romeo’s in Rundle Mall has got your back. They’ve also got the fresh and highquality ingredients we know and love them for, so you can chef it up if you wish — but we prefer to sip on an almond latte in their café while the entire dinner party meal is created around us by the clever Romeo’s team. Here are a few of our go-to selections.

CHEESE

Sitting in the middle of this store is an entire cheese bar and cheese room. Smelly or mild, hard or soft, local or exotic — you’ll walk away with everything you need to build the perfect platter.

The smell of freshly baked bread is right up there with mowed lawn or a newborn baby’s head — no other smell compares. Romeo’s bake their bread fresh every day, and has a huge selection of rolls and loaves. Our number one pick is the olive loaf, every single time.

DESSERT

We don’t have the time, skills or patience to whip up a croquembouche or a 14-layered chocolate cake, so we let Romeo’s do the work for us — and man, do they nail it. Select from a range of traditional Italian desserts, pretty-as-a-picture cakes and fruity tarts in their patisserie. If you can’t find what you’re after, put in an order for a customised cake instead.

SALAD

Wow your crowd with a selection of freshly made salads that won’t require you to chop a single vegetable, since Sumo Salad has done all the hard work for you. From your classic pasta salad to your gourmet couscous option, there’s a huge range to choose from.

FLOWERS

With their very own instore florists using only the freshest SA flowers, these blooms are so pretty they’ll make your heart flutter. Popping flowers on the table makes any occasion feel special, and will hopefully distract your guests from the food if you’ve attempted a risky dish. @_romeos romeosretailgroup.com.au 51 -

If you think that Bracegirdle’s is only known for their handmade artisan chocolates, think again. This sweet business has so much more to tempt. WORDS Millie Looker

C

reated by husband and wife Garry and Sue Bracegirdle, this chocolate company had a romantic beginning. Sue comes from a background of retail and confectionary, and when she met Garry — a self-confessed chocoholic who was working as a teacher — their passions combined and Bracegirdle’s was born. Since the doors opened on their Jetty Road premises in 2005, Bracegirdle’s has become Australia’s most awarded artisan chocolatier, creating sweet morsels that experiment with exciting new flavour combinations. Long gone are the days of simple milk, white and dark chocolate. “When you come to one of our shops, our products don’t look like chocolates, they look like pieces of art — it’s all about colour, shape, texture and complexity of flavour,” Garry says. The handmade chocolates look luxe and make the perfect gift to spoil a loved one, but they’re also affordable because, as Garry says, “you deserve it”.

- 54

Over the last 14 years, Sue and Garry have been working with their team of highly skilled chocolatiers and chefs to bring Bracegirdle’s to even more people. You can now find their cafés located in Glenelg, Clarence Gardens, Marion, McLaren Vale and Blackwood, with each serving up far more than just the Bracegirdle’s chocolates that we know and love. “We pride ourselves on providing you with quality service, food, drinks and, of course, chocolates, and would love for you to come in, eat local and enjoy our seasonal menus.” All five cafés offer light lunches and decadent desserts, however you can’t go past the McLaren Vale and Blackwood stores, each boasting an extensive menu with a twist. Within the savoury dishes hides high-quality chocolate, whether it’s in the seasonings or dressings. Half the fun is tasting each element to find that hint of chocolatey goodness. And what pairs perfectly with chocolate? Wine, of course. Book your next meal out at the licensed McLaren Vale and Blackwood cafés and sample a chocolate cocktail or simply enjoy a relaxing drink with your meal. Bracegirdle’s is also famous for their nonalcoholic drinks. If it’s a caffeine fix you’re after, then pop into any of the Bracegirdle’s cafés for a hot or iced coffee, or try one of their deluxe hot chocolates made from high-quality real melted chocolate. Grab a gang of your gals and organise your next catch up at Bracegirdle’s over good coffee, delicious food, premium handmade chocolate — or all of the above!

FIVE FLAVOUR SENSATIONS YOU CAN’T MISS

1. Ruby chocolate This brand new chocolate variety produces a pink colour and berry flavour, naturally. 2. Shiraz truffle Every time this chocolate is entered into a show, it wins an award. Just goes to show how mouth-wateringly delicious it is. 3. Chilli hot chocolate Combines the warm chocolate mix with the tingling sensation of chilli for the ultimate decadence. 4. Shepherds Hill pie with white chocolate mash Available at the Blackwood café, this modern take on a traditional dish will have you coming back for more. 5. Chocolate butterscotch schnapps cocktail Exclusive to the McLaren Vale café… if only our magazine came with a taste function.

J

ust like a Swiss army knife, there’s one venue that has you covered like MacGyver no matter what the occasion. The Gallery on Waymouth is a three-level hub in the city that is a function centre, contemporary art gallery and public rooftop all in one. And with a gaggle of awards in excellence, it’s not hard to see why. The building showcases simple sophistication and heritage charm, with polished floorboards, exposed bluestone walls and contemporary art from local Jamestown artist Alysha Sparks on levels one and two — you can buy them online and any pieces sold are quickly replaced. The down-to-earth crew will guide you through their packages, complete with options, and will ultimately tailor your event to make sure it’s one to remember. It’s a solid five pineapples from us. So, walk this way…

First floor – Gallery Room

Set on the ground level, this private room can be hired for 45 people seated or 70 standing, with high tables around the room. There’s a bar and track lighting, so you can set your mood, and it’s decked out with all your technological needs — perfect for your next corporate gig, networking event and even smaller engagements and twenty-firsts.

The recently updated rooftop garden will have you on cloud nine with its expansive views. A fully retractable roof transforms the space in cooler months, with a mass of heaters to keep you snug while indulging in an iconic espresso martini. It’s open to the public Tuesday to Saturday, and offers private hire on Sundays and Mondays for up to 180 people, cocktail-style. Greenery and sculptures (also available online) create cocooned spaces for groups of all sizes, with regular DJs bringing the vibe on Friday and Saturday nights. “It’s a welcoming space year round, where you can switch off and share good quality food and a drink or two with mates. It’s got a great vibe that’s not too in your face, so you can still hold a conversation,” Functions Manager Alex Taylor says. The Rooftop is also stellar for a mid-week lunchbreak, with a drinks list full of premium wines — including many SA brands — cocktails, mocktails and plenty of craft beers.

Second floor – Waymouth Room

This is where we held our premiere Adelady TV launch. There’s an abundance of natural light thanks to a floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking Waymouth Street, plus room for 140 seated or 180 standing. The open room can also be divided to create intimate spaces, so you’ve got plenty of options.

FOOD: PENDLETON OLIVE ESTATE

SA’s own liquid gold Epic flavour combos Photo: Andrew Beveridge.

Have you ever looked at an olive and wondered how it turns into that versatile liquid called extra virgin olive oil? Same. We ask the experts at SA’s very own Pendleton Olive Estate. WORDS Millie Looker

Y

ou’ve probably seen Pendleton Olive Estate’s colourful signature brand of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) sitting on supermarket shelves. You may have even sampled their gourmet range of premium vinegars, dukkahs and more from your local fine foods store. Or perhaps you’ve tasted it in dishes by top chefs around Adelaide. These guys mean business when it comes to olive oil, and that’s because it’s practically running through their veins. The powerhouse behind Pendleton Olive Estate is husband and wife team Nick and Rachel Whiting. Originally dedicated to the production side of the business, the last couple of years has seen them do a major rebrand and create some shelf-friendly

- 58

products — all of which are grown right here in SA, on the Limestone Coast. “‘Grow, harvest, press’ is our mantra, as we do it all,” Rachel says. “We have control over the entire process from the ground up, so we know it’s quality in each and every bottle.” Growing 170,000 trees on the Limestone Coast, they are not only the largest producer of EVOO in SA but also have the largest olive mill and temperature-controlled storage facility, allowing them to store their oil in the best conditions available. There, the goods are safely protected from light, heat and oxygen, which ensures you’re getting the freshest and healthiest EVOO available, regardless of which you choose. It’s hard to know if you’re making the right choice when choosing one of the many bottles of oil off the supermarket shelf. Not only is EVOO the healthiest oil due to its incredibly high antioxidant level, but it’s also the safest to cook with as these antioxidants protect the oil when cooked, even at high heat. When it comes to finding the right one, Rachel has a simple answer. “Look for the symbol on the side of the bottle to see if the oil you’re choosing is certified 100 percent Australian extra virgin olive oil — for example, the entire Pendleton EVOO range has the tick of approval.”

• Extra Virgin Mild in a carrot cake • Extra Virgin Robust + crumbed chicken cutlets • Vinegar – Merlot + marinated lamb • Extra Virgin Ginger + ovenbaked salmon • Citrus Press Blood Orange Agrumato + chocolate orange lava pudding

Why stop at Mild, Classic or Robust Extra Virgin Olive Oil, when there are hundreds of different flavour sensations just waiting to be created? Pendleton Olive Estate has created a premium range that takes the best of olive oil and combines it with other mouth-watering flavours. I’m drooling just thinking about pancakes cooked in their Extra Virgin Olive Oil Infused with Vanilla Bean, or fish cooked in the Lemon Agrumato, one of their Citrus Pressed oil range that crushes lemons with the olives during the first cold press. For a more adventurous flavour, you can’t go wrong with their range of vinegars, and they’ve even created their own almond and pistachio dukkahs — a match made in heaven when paired with some Pendleton Extra Virgin Olive Oil and crusty bread. You can use EVOO goodness in your cooking, salads, baking and face masks — you can even drink it. So make a healthier, higher quality, South Australian choice and grab a bottle of Pendleton Olive Estate in supermarkets or online. Your pantry will never be the same again. @pendleton_olive_estate pendletonoliveestate.com.au

FOOD: MEKKO MARKET & CAFÉ

Coffee, fashion, food, cocktails, art and good times — Mekko Market and Café is a Scandinavian hotspot combining all our favourite things. WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Wayne Pearson

Y

ou’re welcomed inside this bustling café and secondhand fashion market with the simple message: “May all guests who come to Mekko Market and Café leave as friends.” How could you not, with such an infectious and friendly vibe? Mekko Market and Café has become a beehive of activity on Prospect Road since it was started by two fun-loving besties from Finland, Marjukka and Irene, and it’s the first ever pre-loved clothing market in Australia that doesn’t take any commission.

Set in a beautiful heritage-listed building that used to operate as a police station and courthouse, the space has been transformed by the girls with just the right amount of colour and flair. And, as part of the renovations, they made sure to include an enormous kitchen and bar. Mekko Market and Café produces modern Australian delights with a Scandinavian touch — an ode to their home. They also cater for vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free Adeladies. The food is outstanding every time and a great match to the local wines, boutique beers and, of course, cocktails. You can dine in under the local art (which is for sale) or get cosy in the alfresco area overlooking Prospect Road, which is filled with colourful lanterns. This outdoor space stays open throughout the year — rain, hail or shine. And with all those pre-loved clothing racks, it’s a dream for fashion-lovers of all shapes and sizes. They see the high-end brands you know and love come through the door and sell them for ridiculously cheap prices. You won’t leave empty handed. So how does it work if you’ve got some secondhand threads to sell? You simply rent a rack in their market, then Mekko does all the hard work selling the items for you. FOOD: MELBA’S

MELBA’S SWEETEST TIPS

Only 40 minutes up the freeway into the Adelaide Hills, you’ll find SA’s own Willy Wonka and his chocolate factory. WORDS Millie Looker

alking into Melba’s is a lot like how I imagine Charlie felt as he walked into the Chocolate Factory — you’re smacked in the face with the aroma of chocolate, there’s machinery churning out sweet treats in every little side room and, of course, you’re surrounded by 200 different types of chocolate and confectionery. To be honest, the only thing missing is the Oompa Loompas. Located in Woodside at the historic Farmers Union Factory site, this familyowned and operated business has grown to be a tourist attraction and must-see destination for a million different reasons.

- 60

Originally the brainchild of Joy and Graeme Foristal, Melba’s is now run by their son Tom, who is busy continuing the dream that his parents began. “Melba’s is in the business of putting smiles on faces. That’s pretty hard to go past as a career choice,'' Tom says. As a youngster, you might have visited this SA institution on a school excursion. Coming back as an adult is a whole new experience — mostly because this time you’ve got the power (and the money) to buy anything your heart desires. Unlike a traditional chocolate shop, the Melba’s factory goes beyond selling products, instead focusing on the overall experience. You can spend hours wandering around, learning the rich history and peeking into the manufacturing rooms to get a glimpse of what’s being made that day. As a functioning factory, there’s always an element of surprise as to which mouth-watering treat is being created, but you’re bound to learn some secrets as you watch the pros pouring hot licorice out onto cooling slabs or chocolate-coating nuts in the panning room. Just when you think your senses are officially overloaded with sugar, take a load off in Melba’s Coffee Shop and enjoy a real

In a factory that offers more than 200 products, it’s nearly impossible to try everything in one sitting. So we asked the man behind Melba’s, Tom, for his sweetest tips… 1. he cellar door has been around for only six years but Artwine is no newbie on the SA wine scene. Owners Judy and Glen Kelly have owned vineyards for 20 years and the label for more than 11 years, so when the stunning new cellar door was built in 2013, it was the final cork in their bottle. Artwine has been awarded 19 trophies, including Wine of Show with their Grüner Veltliner — a huge feat for a family business, run by Judy, Glen and their two wine dogs, Coco and Billie. A fan of firsts, Artwine is the only cellar door in the Adelaide Hills to produce an estate-grown Prosecco and Albariño, and was the first to create a Fiano in the Clare Valley. For those looking to get more adventurous with their wine selections, Artwine boasts one of the largest new emerging variety commercial plantings in Australia, so they’re offering so much more than the classic Shiraz. “We have been passionate about these new emerging varieties for years, which started us on this journey. are, we believe, the sustainable wine future of Australia,” Judy says. Nothing is left to chance during a wine tasting, with the brand new high-tech Enomatic machine promising a perfect pour every single time. If you’re not sure where to start, check the first row of vines outside — they’re a cheat-sheet to the differences between the 14 varieties on offer. Artwine is a sight for sore eyes all year round. The A-grade views show off vines that stretch as far as you can see, and the walls are covered in beautiful and bright local artwork that Judy has carefully selected, all available for purchase. The cellar door is light and airy, with floor-toceiling windows that can be opened in summer or kept closed, with the built-in fire roaring during the cooler months. For families, the lawns outside are perfect for setting up a picnic rug and indulging in one of their renowned platters or playing a lawn game. If you’re looking for a little more privacy, head down the back to one of the tables under the olive trees — I’ve spent many afternoons with a bottle of Prosecco there, so believe me when I say, it’s pure bliss. After visiting Artwine five times in four months — for a Saturday platter, a 30th birthday, a long lunch, Mother’s Day and another Saturday platter — I still find myself looking for any excuse to go back for more. It’s just that good.

JUDY’S TOP THREE EMERGING VARIETIES

1. The Real Thing, Albariño We are the first and only producers in the Adelaide Hills — currently there are only four or five Albariños in the country. This delicious wine won a gold medal after its first vintage, and is a great match to seafood and sunshine. 2. Wicked Stepmother, Fiano The Fiano is our flagship white wine and is loved by both white and red–wine drinkers because of the spiciness that matches so many dishes. Our 2019 Fiano has just been awarded the trophy at the Royal Sydney Wine Show for the Best Other White Variety. 3. Leave Your Hat On, Montepulciano Our Montepulciano can hold its own with foods from pasta to steak. We’ve produced two vintages of this luscious red wine and have already won five golds and three trophies, including the Winestate Magazine Best Red Alternative Variety of the Year and Best Red Wine at the Clare Valley Wine Show.

ich in history and charm, Australia’s oldest family-owned winery is right under your nose, in the Barossa. At 170 years young, Yalumba is most famous for its range of topnotch wines but we’ve just discovered a brand new reason for you to visit — say a big fat hello to the Yalumba Grenache Experience. I took it upon myself to give it a crack. Here’s how it went…

- 62

I FOUND MYSELF STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF A VINEYARD AT 9AM ON A MONDAY MORNING, WITH A GLASS OF YALUMBA’S CARRIAGE BLOCK GRENACHE IN HAND. NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL LIVING.

DRINKS: YALUMBA

The Grenache Experience I’m no wine connoisseur but from what I’ve heard, Grenache is so hot right now. The idea of going on a Grenache-specific tour made me nervous — would I have to be able to taste the tannins? What exactly are tannins? — but my fears were unfounded. As soon as I arrived at Yalumba, I headed to the Wine Room to meet my guides. A quick word of advice: make sure to book online in advance, as most of the tours require a couple of days notice. If you’re not sure which tour is for you, give the team at Yalumba a call and they can point you in the right direction. My heart was already set on the Grenache Experience, so we jumped in the Land Cruiser and made our way to our first destination. My guides, Jess and Jess, were knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about their many styles of Grenache. I found myself standing in the middle of the Carriage Block vineyard at 9am on a Monday morning, with a glass of Yalumba’s Carriage Block Grenache in hand. Now that’s what I call living. There’s something quite unreal about being able to touch and feel the grapes that will end up in a glass just like the one I was drinking. It also hammered home the fact that Yalumba’s wine is grown, nurtured, pruned and picked by hand, then pressed and bottled here in our beautiful Barossa. The guides’ brains are crammed with fun facts about Yalumba, and you’ll be blown away by how much there is to learn about just one variety of wine. It turns out that our very own Barossa is home to some of the oldest Grenache vines in the world, and Yalumba’s Tri-Centenary Block is among them. They’re also increasing their organic wine portfolio, so hats off to them as they work towards a more sustainable wine future. While there are a couple of other stops and plenty of wine tastings on this Grenache-fuelled tour, I don’t want to give it all away before you get a chance to try it out yourself. Let’s just say the Grenache Experience ends back at Yalumba, with a platter filled with local produce and a glass of your favourite drop from the day. Trust me, it’s definitely a quality investment.

Explore Yalumba What other tours are on offer at Yalumba?

While the Grenache Experience easily scores five pineapples in my book, don’t be afraid to check out the other tours online to suit your budget or wine preferences, such as the Cooperage Tour, Unearthed Tour, Unlocked Tour or the Signature Tour. If you’re looking for a more personalised experience, give the Wine Room a buzz and see which tour best suits you. And if you’ve only got an hour or so to spare, then skip the tour and drop by for a tasting anyway — you won’t regret it.

What to look for in Grenache

For all you wine newbies, I asked the Yalumba team for some different flavours to look for when you’re sipping on a glass of Grenache. “Some of the flavours you might taste include lots of red berries — strawberry, raspberry, cherry — and maybe some stonefruit if you’re sipping on a Rosé style. By nature, Grenache is a very light variety and a brilliant starting point if you’re just developing your taste for wine.”

The first thing you’ll notice when you pull into Yalumba is what appears to be Rapunzel’s castle — the beautiful old Clocktower that this winery is known for. The grounds are manicured to perfection, with open lawns in the middle. Take a peek to the left and you’ll see the Southern Hemisphere’s only onsite cooperage still in operation during the week, as the winemakers work with the barrel-makers to create handmade wine vats that add a fragrant sweet spice to the wine. Originally named in 1849 by founder Samuel Smith, Yalumba means ‘all the land around’ — a nod to the open space that sat ready and waiting for new vines to be planted. The generations have stayed in the business, and Yalumba is now chaired by fifth-generation Robert Hill-Smith, who lives with his wife, Annabel, in their homestead next to the Clocktower. It’s clear that family is at the heart of everything that Yalumba does, as every generation — and even some loyal employees who have passed through the business — has wine dedicated to them. The central hub of Yalumba is the Wine Room — a room quite literally filled with wine. With an open fireplace for cooler mornings and a tasting bar stretching the length of the room, you’re invited to sample from Yalumba’s collection of wines. The walls are adorned with history, and you can sip on a vino while you take a lap, soaking up all there is to know. @yalumbawine

DRINKS: OLIVER’S TARANGA

A must-see for locals and tourists alike, this impeccable cellar door has as much history as the Oliver family tree. WORDS Ryan Burgess

O

liver’s Taranga Winery takes two things very seriously — wine and family. They’ve been growing grapes since 1839 and are still going strong six generations later, so it’s clear they’re doing something right. This impeccable cellar door is a mustsee for locals and tourists alike. The Oliver family has retained the charm of this special little place, just 40 minutes from Adelaide’s CBD in McLaren Vale. It’s the perfect place to experience how wine and history go hand-in-hand, playing host to tastings and private porchetta parties while also doubling as a museum to the family’s colourful history, which is as enthralling as their approach to winemaking.

The emphasis on family hasn’t changed throughout their 180-year history. Cousins Corrina Wright and Brioni Oliver sit at the helm of the 300-acre property, while Brioni’s dad (and Corinna’s uncle) Don is still present in the vineyard. Keen to continue the Oliver legacy, this generation has introduced their own wine range and even scored the prestigious honour of Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine for their HJ Reserve Shiraz. Before kicking off their label, the grapes grown on Oliver’s Taranga vineyard were sold to reputable neighbouring wineries, such as d’Arenberg, Penfolds, Seppeltsfield and Wirra Wirra. While these relationships continue, they began using them for their own wines — Corrina got the nod from her grandfather in 1994 to begin growing and producing under the Oliver’s Taranga label. We’re sure glad they did.

IT’S THE PERFECT PLACE TO EXPERIENCE HOW WINE AND HISTORY GO HAND-IN-HAND.

WINE CLUB WITH A DIFFERENCE

Far be it for the Oliver family to tell anyone how to buy and enjoy wine. Their OTT (Oliver’s Taranga Tasting) wine club allows the utmost flexibility. Go over the top and work your way through both their traditional and non-traditional varieties, with no fees, freight or minimum orders. Choose your wine in your own time, as often as you like, and enjoy generous discounts in doing so. We think that makes it taste even more delicious.

PORCHETTA PARTIES WOMEN IN WINE

Sick of being the only woman in the room, Corrina often finds herself frustrated that less than 10 percent of production roles in wine are filled by women. Corrina continues to pave the way for female winemakers as part of the Australian Women in Wine Awards Board, was a finalist in both this year and last year’s ASVO Winemaker of the Year awards, and was an early adopter of nontraditional variety, Fiano — including a spectacular bubbly version.

Touted as “a day generously filled with great food, wine and friends” by all who attend, the Porchetta Party is a four-course Italianstyle lunch by chef Todd Steele, matched with Oliver’s Taranga wines. On Sundays, sit out on the deck at Oliver’s and soak up this unique experience, as well as the drop-dead gorgeous surrounds of the vineyard. Keep your eyes peeled when you pop in — we just might be there.

You’re greeted with larger groups enjoying the delicious food and craft beer, couples laying on the grass in the sunshine, families kicking the football around, grandparents throwing the frisbee, and Mikey the British bulldog. The vibe is laid back and anything goes. Head inside to find long tables filled with happy patrons enjoying one — or more — of Swell’s 16 craft beers on tap, local wines and next-level food from their Americaninspired menu. like the Swiss brown mushroom, Second Valley halloumi and tomato relish burger. Swell’s menu, created by head chefs Todd Steele and Glenn Worrall, formerly of the Victory Hotel, has the kids and sweetest of teeth covered, too. If you leave without trying the sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla bean ice cream, we’re going to have problems. As good as the food and vibes are at Swell, beer is the main attraction. Dan, who came up with the concept of Swell as he surfed his way around South America on $10 a day, has been brewing cans and kegs of his refreshing craft beer for more than seven years. The best way to work through the range and discover your favourite is the tasting paddle. You’re in complete control of what goes on it, and Swell encourages you to mix and match. The same goes for their takeaway brews — just select your top picks from their core range and take home a mix to enjoy at your leisure. Dan and Corrina say they built this taphouse for families, and Swell embodies everything old-school about hanging with your nearest and dearest on the weekend. It’s the type of place where people actually converse and the views are so stunning

that scrolling through Instagram will take a backseat. This, combined with the quality of the food and drinks on offer, is the reason the popularity of Swell has swollen beyond anticipation mere months after launching in the Fleurieu. DRINKS: SETTLERS ARTISAN SPIRITS

Settle in for a gintastic treat Once upon a vine, on an ambling road in a vale not so far away, lived an adorable couple running a delightful boutique gin distillery… and they’re still there. Say hello to Rowland and Shelley Short of Settlers Artisan Spirits. WORDS Em Worthington

O

ne sip and you’ll know immediately why Settlers’ award-winning spirits have scooped national and international recognition in as far-flung places as San Francisco and London. While they’re officially retired, this go-getting duo are pouring their love into their hobbyturned-popular-distillery in McLaren Vale. Originally using the property to make Maximus Wines, Rowland and Shelley now use the vines that hug either side of the cellar door for their spirits.

A D E L A D Y M A G A Z I N E \ I SS U E 2

Immersive masterclass For a fully-immersive ginsperience, pop your name down for a masterclass with Rowland. You’ll get to line up combinations of 12 different botanicals along the spacious benchtop, while having a casual walk through the history and art of making gin. To top it off, you’ll whip up a few of your own blends and leave with a 200ml bottle (or “handbag saver” as described by Shelley) of your creation.

- 66

Rowland says it was a natural progression into the world of distilling. “I loved making gin for the two of us, but once I saw the thrill people got when they tasted it, my interest exploded. We started out with three signature gins — now we have 11, soon to be 12.” It’s underpinned by an obvious passion for the craft — they could talk underwater about the range, from their love of oakaged gin (perfect for a dirty martini) to the soul-warming Spiced Fig Gin, or even

their award-winning number made from Australia’s first commercial crop of Japanese citrus, Yuzu. And not one to do anything by halves, Rowland has even taken to the local airwaves with a fortnightly segment on Adelaide Hills Radio, chatting about base spirits, botanicals and all things gin. Coming up with new flavour concepts is half the fun for Rowland, who loves experimenting with infusion and garnishes in what he calls, “a great game of trial and error” and he gets a kick out of marrying quality with a twist of innovation. Just last Christmas, while searching for the perfect accompaniment for a planned seafood feast with the family, he realised that coriander paired well, and his Coriander Leaf Gin was born.

“People have this preconceived idea that gin’s a drink you only have before dinner or in summer. I love creating a range that goes with food or suits an activity, like our G & Tea Breakfast Gin, which is perfect for brunches or high teas. It’s a delicate blend of Earl Grey tea, lemon and Adelaide Hills honey.” One of their first in the range, the Rare Dry, is still winning the popularity contest, but as for their personal picks, it’s a tough question. Rowland has a soft spot for their Shiraz Gin, and although Shelley would cry if she could only drink one of them for the rest of her life, she can’t go past the refreshing Coriander Leaf Gin. We did a little taste testing and can vouch for all of the range.

Formerly running a maritime academy, there’s no mistaking Rowland’s nose for adventure and saltwater, with the casual nautical theme echoing his past days as “an old sea dog”. From the minute you arrive at the top of Foggo Road, the Distillery Door is a breath of fresh air — a pretty but unassuming space that feels like you’ve popped into a good mate’s house. With stunning simplicity and a welcoming ambience, the venue features views of the vineyards and hills that changes with the seasons. It’s not uncommon to catch sight of a koala or the resident kookaburras. The open space is filled with natural light, while intimate settings are dotted around the room and, on the balcony, stools line the glass-topped bar — all perfect for leisurely chinwags over a top-quality drop in a contagiously relaxed setting. The friendly bartender, Oliver, makes a mean espresso martini and has an impressive knowledge of cocktails. He shares the enthusiasm for what Settlers is all about. And while gins are the staple, they also make an incredible range of rum, whisky, vodka and liqueurs. The most striking thing about this wonderful brand is the warmth of Rowland and Shelley, who just want to share the good times that can be built around the act of enjoying an exceptional tipple. Gin has played a big part in their history, which includes sailing around the globe with nothing but each other’s company and a storage container bursting with gin, and it’s clear that they’re having a blast. When asked how long Rowland thought they’d been married, he says, “Maybe 15 years,” only for Shelley to gently correct him that it’s 27. “Well… time flies when you’re having fun,” he says with a laugh. And although their feet are now firmly on solid ground in their home town, close to family, Rowland and Shelley’s taste for adventure hasn’t wavered. Now, it just comes in an eye-catching 700ml bottle and pairs beautifully with a good tonic and a garnish or two.

Who are the faces behind these four magnificent bars? It’s Adelaide’s very own Kidd Retail Group (KRG). Specialising in creating venues that are so much more than just another pub, the team at KRG control the whole process from the original ideas to the creation and right through to completion. After catching a glimpse of some top-secret plans, it’s obvious that this isn’t their first rodeo. Every minor detail — from the lighting right down to the entertainment on offer — is locked down before construction even starts. All it takes is a quick glance at their pumping venues on a Friday night and it’s clear they know how to take a bar and raise it.

The good news is that there are two more coming — the mysterious yetto-be-named ‘Secret Bar’ and later, Two Suns, which will be worth the stair climb to watch a sunset or seven.

Close to but separate from each other, these four individual venues each champion their own vibe, attitude, drink selections and food menu. Whichever you choose to visit, you’re guaranteed high-quality service and good times coming your way. So if it’s been a while since your last night on the town, it’s time to grab your gals and head straight for Topham Mall to discover this ultimate hotspot. \

Lady Burra

Beer lovers, rejoice! Lady Burra Brewhouse recently won Australia Brewery of the Year at the 2019 Melbourne International Beer Competition, beating more than 20 breweries. Not only that, but two of their beers took out bronze medals — their Raspberry Belgian Wheat beer in the Fruit Wheat Beer $10 – Less category and their Pilsner in the International-Style Lager $10 – Less category. The awards are the only international beer competition where the judges are real trade buyers, so saying they know their beers is putting it mildly. But what about the venue? With a microbrewery featured out the back, this versatile venue is perfect for a tapas-style lunch or dinner, a mid-arvo meeting over drinks or your next big partay. The open-plan space is filled with colour and warmth, and can be opened completely in summer or kept toasty in winter. A big chunk of the ambiance comes from the wall art, which is waiting to be the background of your next Insta post. When it comes to food, Lady Burra never disappoints. With a Portuguese-inspired tapas selection, the phrase ‘sharing is caring’ was created with this menu in mind — you’ll want to try everything. Whether you’re an expert on beer or just learning to love it, make sure to peek through the windows of the Adelaide CBD’s only onsite microbrewery to check out the action before making your choice. The knowledgeable staff will steer you in the right direction. If beer isn’t for you, you’ll find all the usuals on the menu, including our personal favourite, the aperol spritz.

The Noble Gentleman

Don’t let the name fool you — you don’t have to be a gentleman to pass through these doors. Sitting flush against Lady Burra and sharing an alfresco area, this chic space has a wine list that’s a mile long. On most days, you’ll find the talented Miguel behind the bar — a sommelier by trade who can take a vague “I’d like a glass of red that’s not too heavy” and serve up the exact Pinot Noir you were looking for. While a cheese platter full of SA greats is always a good idea, The Noble Gentleman also offers full meals and is a great place to venture if you’re after something heartier. An eggplant parmigiana is a winner for the veggos, while meals straight from the sea and the paddock are just as tasty. Suckers for a heartwarming story about locals supporting locals, we love the monthly wine club, which sees The Noble Gentleman bring an SA winery that doesn’t have a cellar door into the venue to offer their wines. It’s the prefect inner-city pop-up for wineries based in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills. @thenoblegentlemanadl noblegentleman.com.au

randen and Nathan are the boys behind Adelaide Bar Boys, an initiative that gets locals and tourists into some of SA’s hidden bars. It all started with one big idea while these best mates were travelling around Europe together. “We did a lot of tours ourselves and there was a common theme of the tour guide leaving and the rest of the group looking at us, as if to say, ‘So, now what?’” Branden says. Realising they had a knack for finding bars off the beaten track, they saw a gap in their home town and, with some backing from local bars and a vote of confidence from the SA Tourism Commission, Adelaide Bar Boys was born. A

visit to this picturesque venue goes next-level when you meet the irrepressible owner and winemaker, Matt Rechner, and his equally spirited team. We caught up with Matt to get the goss on Ekhidna Wines' incredible dining experience, ambient cellar door, versatile weddings and events... and even a cheeky fact about the spikey mammal that fronts his brand. What brings people to Ekhidna Wines? More important than great wine is that every person who walks through our doors experiences true hospitality and feels the Ekhidna love. We get to know our guests and what they like, so we can steer them in the right direction for a great experience drinking quality wines, eating great food and enjoying a beautiful setting. You’ll find me in the cellar door most days, serving up my wines and chatting to guests. We have a strong ‘no-BS’ rule, so you’ll get our honest opinion, but at the end of the day it’s about you and what you like. What kicked off your career in the wine industry? I started my career straight after leaving school, putting labels on wine bottles. I’ve got a head for numbers and would spend my morning tea break and lunch in the lab at Tatachilla, chatting to winemakers and learning simple chemistry. I went on to work in the mechanical side of winemaking, learnt about the cellar side and eventually, became the winemaker. I spent two years in California’s famous Sonoma Valley wine region, working alongside the legendary Darryl Groom — former Penfolds senior white and

red winemaker. I came back excited to experiment with different varieties, blends and methods. I’m all about letting the vines speak for themselves. Ekhidna’s an unusual winery in that you don’t just make wine, right? Absolutely. We’ve got other handcrafted drinks like beer, cider, organic lemon cordial… even a popular ginger beer. We were the first winery in McLaren Vale to make beer. I noticed that there was often one person in the group who wasn’t as into wine — often the designated driver — so I got into making beer, too, and now we do great beer flights. Although making wine is my real passion. What’s on offer for people who want a bite to eat? We’re all about quality, tapas-style dishes, and rather than one cuisine, we change our menu quarterly to make the most of in-season produce. We buy from a lot of small independent producers and grow whatever we can to put into our beer and wine and onto your plate. We know a lot of people are looking for vegan dishes, so we cater for them, too. While our guests are waiting for their food, we love to take them to the bar to do a testing for a bit of fun, pairing the wine with their order. Mix all that with the beautiful setting and you won’t want the meal to end. If you want to really make the most of this beautiful region, we’ve got a cosy and fully-equipped B&B on the property too — perfect for a weekend stay to explore McLaren Vale’s other wonders. What about special events? We’re chuffed when people choose us and we particularly love hosting weddings of all sizes — Sam, the Functions Manager, organises everything from low-key affairs for 40 right up to 220 guests. There’s plenty of undercover space, which we can close off if the weather’s a bit cooler, and an awesome dancefloor under the stars when it’s a clear night. Most couples get married in front of the vines and some even choose to arrive by helicopter, landing right here on the property, which is a bit of fun. Most of all, we’ll do what it takes to ensure it’s a

Why echidnas?

I was working in the vineyard one afternoon and I saw one echidna and thought, ‘Oh, that’s nice...’ then another one, followed by another, and soon there was a line of seven echidnas moseying along. It felt like a sign, so I chose my name. I later found out it was actually a love train of echidnas — all part of their unusual breeding ritual.

‘forever memory’… I even found myself fixing up a broken heel at a wedding recently and had the guest back on the dancefloor in no time. How do you feel about what you’ve created here? South Australia is where I love to be. I’m not one for crowds, so I like the pace here but there’s enough going on to keep me busy. The climate and lifestyle is unbeatable, and the people are second to none. I’m doing what I love but I’m mostly grateful for what we’ve created with the team and the support we’ve received from guests. We never know what someone is experiencing when they walk in but we want everyone to enjoy their time at Ekhidna Wines — we always feel lucky to be part of their day. @ekhidnawines ekhidnawines.com.au

THE HIGHBURY

1017 Lower North East Road, Highbury Another jewel in the crown of the North, The Highbury on Lower North East Road is a must-see if you’re after a chic venue for your next cocktail party, Christmas party, wedding, business meeting or corporate jamboree. You’ll be superimpressed with the contemporary space, and the staff will have your needs covered, so all that’s left to do is enjoy. Events aside, it’s got your everyday crowd covered. And if you wind down your window and listen carefully on your way to or from the Barossa, you may just hear the beer garden calling your name. It’d be rude not to pop in.

60 O’Connell Street, North Adelaide Not a new name in the pub scene, The Archer has come into new management. The award-winning team has overseen some refreshing renovations while retaining the heritage character it’s famous for. Just minutes from Adelaide Oval, this city-fringe bar is perfect for a pre or post–match drink or two and a destination for G&T lovers, with an extensive list of boutique gins on offer. Truly a local’s pub, the upmarket vibe still has its feet firmly on the ground, with top-notch meals and a great range of affordable drinks. It’s not hard to pull up a pew in the Coopers Beer Garden for an afternoon with mates, or try your hand at a hit of pool in the downstairs bar… personally, we just chalk up the pool cues and pretend we know what we’re doing, but each to their own. Getting the party started is easy in the upstairs event space, which caters for 120 in the private bar and balcony that overlooks bustling O’Connell Street. If you’re like us and just being around books makes you feel a little more switched on, then the library is a smart option for your next work meeting.

Moody romantic wedding

It all starts with a marquee

If you’ve got the image of a marquee sitting over a Bunnings sausage sizzle in mind, think again. The beauty of a marquee wedding is that you can build it from the ground up — literally — and bring life to a completely blank canvas. White Marquee is always pushing the boundaries of what a traditional marquee should look like to create something new. Most recently, they introduced the Soho House (pictured above), which is part of their wider Soho range. The first of its kind in SA, it features black framing and a six-metre peak and is customisable through optional glass walling and double-glass sliding doors. If you consider yourself a trendsetter, chances are you’re feeling a bit panicky about planning a wedding a year in advance. How do you know if the items you’re selecting will still be considered hip and happening in 12 months time? White Marquee specialises in trend forecasting, and has created the modular Soho range to do just that. The Soho furniture has several interchangeable features that can be assembled in a number of arrangements to work with the space, and comes in a range of finishes — like matte black, brushed gold and silver — so you can pick the one that’s perfect for your event. As their name suggests, White Marquee is brilliant at building you a marquee that acts as a clean slate, so you can add in your chosen colours, styles and sizes. We asked the crew at White Marquee to give us tips on different wedding styles, each starting with nothing but the humble marquee.

With a purpose-built gallery and auction room, Australia’s award-winning fine art auction house is the hidden secret of interior decorators and professional stylists and it’s right here in Mile End. Over the last 50-plus years, this familyowned and run business has sold some of the world’s best antiques, art, decor, wine, jewellery, cars and bespoke furniture. It began with a love story. wife duo Peter and Robin share a flair for fine arts and worked all over the globe together — buying, selling and auctioning high-quality antiques. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, with their son Marc now running the company. “I’ve been a part of the furniture here since I was two days old — I’ve got enormous passion for both our sellers and our buyers. We understand it can be an emotional time for people who are parting with a family heirloom or something that reminds them of a loved one who is no longer with us, so we’re very sensitive to these situations and make sure their beloved piece goes to the perfect home.”

STYLE: DU PLESSIS

With a fresh eye and a whole lot of love, Marc has helped to expand the mix of offerings so that modern-day collectors will also come from afar to buy, sell or just admire. There’s no need to be intimidated, it’s not a theme park reserved only for the super-duper wealthy. You can spend anywhere between a couple of hundred dollars and a couple of hundred thousand, depending on what catches your eye. And if you’re a newbie to the whole auction thing, they welcome you to attend one without obligation, so you can experience the unique atmosphere. “We hold Sunday auctions every four to six weeks — we have free coffee and provide detailed catalogues so everyone knows what’s on offer. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon,” Marc says. Marc, you had me at free coffee.

Their promise to you...

Unlike some auction houses, they will always under-promise and over-deliver. Holding up a piece of art that he’d just collected, Marc says with a smile, “The owner was expecting around $10,000 for the piece — but it should easily fetch around $30,000. The best part will be surprising her with a much bigger result than she was expecting”.

They also have special preview nights where guests can enjoy nibbles and have a look and feel of anything that catches their eye, before going home and imagining it in their house and deciding whether to bid. “Anything you purchase, you can take home immediately — there’s no waiting times like at a lot of furniture shops. All our products are prepared and are in working order, ready to take their new place in your home or office.” Speaking of offices, Marc has a large original Mickey Mouse illustration hung on his wall. This isn’t for sale, but I mention it because it just made me smile. As I meandered through the gallery with my jaw open, I got to meet owner Robin du Plessis, who turned her chair around to say, “I tried to retire yesterday, but I’m back here today because I just can’t let go. I love what we do. Nobody else knows the history of arts and decor like we do. It’s been over 50 years and I still get so excited every time we get a new consignment”. And that’s the real essence of this place. It's family, it’s passion and it’s the reason why they're the leaders in the biz. @duplessisauctions duplessis.com.au

Designs that speak to the heart The birth of Cry Baby

Faced with an empty car park and an uneven floor as their canvas, Kat and Amy embraced the challenge and nailed the brief. Their collaboration with the owners — father and son Joe and Jon Di Pinto — created an Americana dive bar that sings of grunge and seventies-inspired rock with an eclectic collection of vintage art and memorabilia. “The crew from Cry Baby put so much love and personality into this venue and it shows every night that they’re open. We were honoured Joe and Jon put so much trust in us — we loved the crazy rollercoaster of bringing this unique after-dark haunt to life,” Kat says With lacquered polished concrete, touches of Tasmanian oak, sprawling bottle-green booths and an iconic pink neon sign written in Joe’s handwriting, they’ve put this distinctive laneway bar on the map.

his Adelaide-based boutique architectural design firm is run by two local ladies who are blowing the socks off our city (and beyond) with their exceptional designs. Encompassing architectural, interior and furniture design for both residential and commercial projects, these women have got your whole project covered, with an overall eye for aesthetics and functionality. Ready to celebrate four years as Studio AKA, architects Amy Grundy and Kat Dujmovic are the team behind jaw-dropping designs like city hotspot Cry Baby, the sleek commercial fit-out

for CAMMS, the restoration of the stunning early 1900s bluestone dairy Jimmy Smith’s in Port Elliot, and the extraordinary Brisbane residence, Grace On Main. Well versed in maintaining the character and heart of an original space, the team is particularly impressive when it comes to introducing modern takes and improving the functionality of places that hold commercial or family history. Their extensive portfolio showcases a vast range of styles that speaks to so many different tastes. But be warned, flicking through it is likely to bring on a serious case of design envy.

Labour of love

When it comes to large-scale or detailed design, Amy says the team is all about creating a space or statement piece that speaks volumes about the owner. “Our design process is centred around getting to know you — your style, your quirks and how your life is likely to evolve — to deliver something you’ll love long after we’ve wrapped up on site,” she says. Time invested in forging these relationships is definitely a two-way street. “Our clients have to talk about such intimate things — how they live, their dreams, details of their life savings. We appreciate that they’re opening up all their vulnerabilities, placing their trust and money in us, so we want to ‘get’ them and ensure they have confidence in us.” With their easy-going nature, it’s not hard to see how Kat and Amy often form strong friendships along the way — even being invited to their clients’ children’s birthday parties and family celebrations. And their steadfast trust in each other is what gets them through the inevitable changing goalposts along the way, as Kat explains: “Our clients often have life-changing circumstances during the process, which we adapt to (including getting pregnant), so plans need to be altered and budgets need to be juggled. We’ve been working on a magnificent property in Basket Range where exactly this happened — it required a redesign, but we’re elated for them. Creating the perfect space for someone is like a moving jigsaw puzzle and we love putting the pieces in place with them.”

Thoughtful planning

The team at Studio AKA knows that renovating or designing a home is a huge investment — possibly one of the biggest you’ll make in your life. Their commitment to holistic design often sees them creating a master plan so you can see the big picture and then concentrate the design on the areas you feel ready to go ahead with, like a bedroom and ensuite. That way you’ll know future design won’t just be tacking stuff on, and the all-important cohesion throughout the house will remain.

Contagious energy

There’s no denying that Kat and Amy’s partnership is the key to the success of AKA and all that’s to come. They balance each other’s idiosyncrasies, often finishing each other’s sentences — an inspiring nod to doing what you love with someone you love, in a place you call home. “One of the beautiful things about doing business in Adelaide is people’s willingness to help. We were so fortunate when we started to be supported by others in the industry, even our direct competition. We didn’t think people would be as open as they were and it’s inspired us to give that back to others,” Amy says. These two local ladies have a powerful recipe for success — we love all that Studio AKA stands for and can’t wait to watch them continue to add character and charm to the streets of Adelaide and beyond. @studio_aka studioaka.com.au

Mind-blowing residence Grace On Main in Brisbane is another feather in the cap for the Studio AKA team, with their kitchen design taking out the HIA award in 2017 for new kitchen up to $30,000. The result is an extraordinary dream home that celebrates breathtaking city views. The design is a cohesive mix of clean modern lines and cutting-edge technology with elegant design, sophisticated detailing and above all, liveability.

he name Grundy’s will ring a bell for most locals — they’ve been around for donkey’s, and with more than 150 years of family ownership, the mission to mix comfort and style was set from the start. But there’s nothing old-school about this iconic shoe store. This family-owned and operated business proudly provides South Australians with the world’s leading brands for everyday style and comfort and they’re gurus at helping out people with tricky feet. So, whether you’re after some sturdy walking shoes, lightweight kicks for travel or stylish comfort for every day, Grundy’s has got guys and gals covered. Chief Executive Officer Damien Whittenbury speaks fondly of his greatgreat-great-grandfather, Thomas Judd, making the journey to Australia from the UK via ship in 1855. As ‘luck’ would have it, Thomas broke his leg on the trip. His resulting need for corrective footwear led him to become a bootmaker. “For some, a broken leg would spell disaster. But he used it as inspiration to help those with hard-to-fit feet,” he says. Thomas opened a store in Adelaide’s East End before nabbing the Grundy’s Birkenstocks.

store in 1921 that still sits on Rundle Street today. It was a move that paved the path for following generations, with stores on Jetty Road, Glenelg, and Victor Harbor now going strong. All in the name of quality comfort Every Adelady has different feet — some are size 10 and super narrow, others are wide like paddles, some are small and dainty, and most have a pair that don’t quite match up. Give a moment’s thought to the pressure they’re under to get us from A to B each day, and there’s no denying you can’t pick shoes just because they look pretty. For those with problematic feet, the importance of quality footwear skyrockets. Grundy’s knows all this and more. The Grundy’s crew carefully selects every shoe that sits on their shelves, and arms themselves with the ins and outs of each brand so there’s no guess-work when it comes to nailing the perfect pair for you. For online shoppers, they’ve thoughtfully crafted search options so you can look based on the brands you love and what you need the shoe for — boots, sneakers, sandals, flats, wedges, slippers, and even vegan-friendly options. Grundy’s website also lets you search by different widths so you know which styles will work with insoles — music to the ears of those with anything left or right of the average feet. STYLE: SAS BY ROVINA

Five reasons to get stylish at sas This hidden gem is our secret for stylish gifts and spoil-yourself treats. WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Naomi Giatas

alking inside sas by rovina is like stepping into Aladdin’s Cave — it’s nearly impossible to leave without picking something up. Here are our top five reasons to go shopping at this sweet stop in Pasadena Shopping Centre. And next time you head to sas by rovina, keep an eye out for smiling Sandra — tell her that Adelady sent you! 1. It’s a business with heart The heart, brain, face and soul behind sas by rovina is local Adelady Sandra. Coming from a background in hairdressing and sales, it wasn’t until she started sas that she truly felt like she was where she was meant to be. “Finally in my fifties, I found my calling, my passion,” Sandra says. It’s all about creating a place of positivity for anyone who visits the store. Or as she puts it, “I just like making people happy”. A nod to her beloved family members, the name sas comes from her children’s names — Sandra, Alex and Selena — while Rovina is the surname of her late parents, who left a lasting imprint on Sandra’s work ethic. With Sandra behind the counter most days, plus two dedicated staff members to

back her up and Selena helping out on the weekends, it’s a family affair. 2. There’s something for everyone Whether you’re spoiling yourself or someone you love, you’re bound to find the perfect gift. For women, there’s a never-ending list to choose from, with each item coming in numerous designs and patterns — candles, earrings, bags, scarves, kaftans, hand creams and more. For your man friends, you can pick up a fancy wallet or a pair of novelty socks to put a smile on their dial, and the kids go crazy for the bows that come in rainbow colours. It doesn’t matter if gold is your jam, diamonds are the sparkle in your eye or boho beads are your need — you’re bound to find the perfect fit for you. 3. It’s a great way to support local When it comes to suppliers, Sandra is picky about who she buys from and whether their ethics fit the bill. This is reflected particularly in the colourful Indigenous ranges from Mainie Australia and Utopia Giftware Australia, which includes accessories painted by an Indigenous

community, with royalties going straight back to the original artists. You’ll also find plenty of SA items on display, such as the rainbow trinket trays and personalised mugs from Intrinsic, and so much more. 4. There’s no need to break the bank Affordable fashion always has our tick of approval, and sas by rovina has nailed it. Items range in price, so no matter your budget, you’ll always find something that fits the brief. Sas also offers lay-by and has a permanent 50-percent-off section, making it easy to get spending. 5. Celebrate different shapes and sizes sas by rovina offers looks to suit every kind of body. Sick of searching for jewellery to fit bigger hands and shoes for large stompers, Sandra filled the gap. Modern shoes come in sizes to fit a dainty foot and go up to size 42. The range of jewellery sizes means bangles and rings won’t be cutting off your circulation. Ladies, let’s say one big hallelujah! @sasbyrovina

delaide friends Tammy and Hayley are the women behind SA’s most popular handbags — Willow Bay. They started out with a vision to create a brand that included practical yet fashionable pieces, while incorporating their love of colour. Throughout the design process of each bag, Tammy and Hayley always come back to the same question: ‘As busy working mums, what do we need?’ It’s this real-life influence that sees their simple and timeless designs constantly improving. Willow Bay is more than just style and practicality, though. OUR TOP PICKS

Decisions, decisions, decisions... With such a huge range of colours and styles, it’s nearly impossible to choose the perfect bag for you. We’ve been fangirls of Willow Bay since day one, so let us walk you through some of our current obsessions. Boutique neoprene zip tote (1) If you’re a busy working mum, you’ll be pleased to know that this bag fits a laptop and 17 packs of baby wipes. Plus, it zips all the way along the top to stop tiny hands from reaching in and pulling out lip glosses and tampons. It’s available in a velvet finish that makes us feel fancy. Love! Express Duffel neoprene bag (2) Everyone, meet our new gym bag. It’s made of neoprene, which means when your sweaty sports bra makes everything a bit whiffy, you can throw the lot in the wash. It’s also super versatile — gym bag, nappy bag, overnight bag, daycare bag… the list goes on.

Milan Mini PVC/canvas bag (3) There’s a fashionista in all of us — even if she’s gone missing for a while. This everyday bag has the magic ability to turn jeans and a t-shirt into a runway look. Seriously, it’s very cool. Felt Wristlet clutch (4) Take this clutch to a special event or sling it around your wrist when you’re running late to brunch. The sneaky touches of faux leather are so realistic that it will have you second-guessing whether it’s faux after all (we promise, it is). Luxe neoprene crossbody/clutch (5) Neoprene material but with a funky new design. Small enough to use as a clutch but big enough as an everyday bag. There’s a silver chain for when you want to class it up and a PC strap for when you’re looking for a casual day bag. This baby is a little bit of everything rolled into one.

Fortunately, The Podiatry Place @ Henley has opened its doors to ensure that every little pig on your child’s tootsies is in perfect working condition. Paediatric podiatrist Hayley Uden and her husband, Anthony, are the masters behind this genius new service, making it easy to look after the feet of your whole crew. Hayley brings 16 years’ experience to the family podiatry services and range of trusted children’s shoes that the couple has brought to the western suburbs. “A lot of people think podiatrists are just for old people — mainly grannies with bunions. But you can get pain or annoying conditions at any age and it impacts on how active you can be,” Hayley says. Cutting teeny tiny nails is one of the daunting things about becoming a new parent. The thoughtfully designed rooms make little ones comfortable if they’re getting checked, and keep them entertained if Mama or Papa is in the hot seat. “As mums, we often put the needs of our families before our own. But the stand-out difference is the old-school loving that Hayley, Anthony and their team bring. “I love it when we get to help someone who’s been to multiple professionals and hasn’t been given the time to figure out what’s causing them issues. I’m happiest when we can find the best solution for their feet,” Hayley says. So, regardless of whether it’s your feet or your child’s, don’t leave it until you’re crying “wee wee wee” all the way home.

Hayley sees clients from bubbas taking their first steps to teenagers, parents and grandparents. A lot of parenting is wondering… is your little buddy walking steadily for their age? Are their feet rolled in or flat? Are they complaining of pain, showing issues with muscle tone or signs of warts or ingrown toenails? An assessment with Hayley will get them in good nick. “I love seeing each child be empowered to get control over their own healthcare,” Hayley says.

WHAT CAN THE PODIATRY PLACE @ HENLEY DO FOR YOU?

Hayley will see you for a one-off or as required. Problem-solving Everything from treating pain, difficult toenails or fungal conditions to tinkering with orthotics. She stocks children’s shoes that are good for their development and helps grown-ups locate the right shoes for tricky feet and that are okay for orthotics. Pampering The Henley Medi-Pedi is the perfect way to get your tootsies feeling refreshed and looking pretty, while taking care of any bumps and lumps. “As an orthotic wearer myself, I know it can be hard to find shoes you’re not embarrassed to wear.”

With age, it’s not uncommon for women to get spider veins and surface varicose veins on our legs. While we’re all for embracing our changing bodies as we age, some women feel self-consious about it. Sclerotherapy can help get rid of them, leaving you feeling more confident to get your pins out again.

The perfect blend With floor-to-ceiling pops of colour, Bauhaus is our foolproof destination for jewellery, one-off pieces, home decor, vintage furniture and quirky gifts. And sharing the love, the team support fair trade and every piece is ethically sourced. Queen bee of this creative hive is Adelaide local Dani Maiolo, who runs it with a dynamic team that includes her two daughters. “We love pieces that have a history or a story — how it was designed, how it came to be and the tradition that it originates from. traditions and artistic techniques from artisans around the world,” Dani says. It’s all-things unique, colourful and a little eccentric, with an incredible collection of items from countries like Mexico, Cameroon, India, Morocco and Indonesia, as well as many Australian designers and creators’ work lining the store’s shelves and their signature bowls. “We’re privileged to use our platform to support local talent and even recently asked South Australian creators to submit their work to exhibit and sell in our store.” The road ahead It’s a bright horizon for the Bauhaus team — maybe not so much for our wallets, though — as they will soon be opening a second store in Norwood. “We’ve always loved the atmosphere on The Parade. We’ll have many of the same incredible pieces you’d expect in our Rundle Street store, as well as more bohemian and luxe furniture, including one-off handmade pieces,” Dani says. Uber-keen to continue evolving, Dani recently launched Bauhaus the label. Heads up — one squiz at their gorgeous cushions, clutches and jewellery will have you eager to buy up big. The down-to-earth staff ensure your visit to Bauhaus is relaxing, offering the

same experience to a teenager shopping for a formal to someone spending big on statement pieces. Great news for the Adelads too… the Bauhaus team is sublime at finding the perfect gift for someone special — so much so, that many of their male first-timers are now regulars, knowing they’ll walk out with a thoughtful, captivating present every time. And to make it even easier to spoil someone special, their complementary gift wrapping adds that extra-special touch. For those who prefer to shop from the comfort of your own couch, Bauhaus has also launched an online store, so you can buy your little pieces of happiness in just a few clicks. Although, we highly recommend popping instore for the full experience. There’s no denying Bauhaus is a party for your eyes and you’ll be hard pressed to walk out without buying something. The question is, though, will it be an old door that’s been restored and made into a console, a vibrant Marimekko fabric print, a heartfelt piece of jewellery, a sunny Tiff Manuell clutch, a Frida Kahlo planter or even a Roman helmet? Whatever draws you in, you’ll walk out feeling inspired by the simple beauty of this eclectic shop that showcases many cultures, tastes and budgets. We wish it was our house. As Amanda said to me, “Hayley, I don’t know who’s talking, you or your uneven brows.” That’s the moment I realised I needed help. The process to perfection… The girls will shape and create the perfect brow for your face, as everyone is different. “We offer a full consultation, working together until we’ve created your desired brows to suit your look,” Amanda says. If you decide to microblade your brows, like I did, the process is surprisingly fun. They’ll pencil in the new and improved brow shape to make sure you’re comfortable with your new look, numbing cream is put on, and in less than an hour

you’re on your way to correcting and creating your perfect eyebrows. “Quite often our clients are a bit nervous the first time they get microblading, so we always go easy on that initial session. We know that once they leave our salons, they’re completely in love with their new brow shape and are coming back for more — bigger and darker.” But microblading is just one of the many brow treatments they offer. They also service your lashes with lash tints and lash lifts, ear piercing, tanning and waxing — the whole shebang! There are six Eyebrow Studios around SA, so there’s probably one right under your nose. Ditch the sweet stuff

We all love a sweet treat, but what you eat affects your face. Everyone reacts differently, but the three main culprits that increase inflammation are sugar, dairy and gluten. Sugar makes the environment that the cells live in very sticky, so it’s tricky for them to exchange water and nutrients. It also attaches itself to the collagen fibres, causing them to become like overstretched rubber bands instead of tightly weaved fibres that give your skin its support and bounce. Apart from potentially increasing your risk of disease by creating an acidic environment in your body, your skin can start to sag, look dull or lifeless, and age faster.

Her holistic approach will have you understanding how general health and lifestyle affects the appearance of your skin. Best of all, Rose tailors your plan to your lifestyle, goals and all-important budget. Gorgeous skin doesn’t take a miracle but it does demand commitment, and consistency is the key. While no one’s perfect, sticking to good habits most of the time will build your skin’s resistance and ability to bounce back when you do treat yourself. One visit to Rose will motivate you to prioritise your overall health and reap the benefits of beautiful skin — see the difference, and get hooked! Of course, you can’t beat a consultation with this clever lady, but we asked Rose to slip us a few simple tips to get your skin functioning at its best. Here, she shares her trade secrets.

Consider supplements

Addressing diet and lifestyle is just as important as addressing gut health. When necessary, I recommend probiotics to create diversity in gut bacteria and essential fatty acid supplements for skinbarrier function, but it's just as vital to get the right one or you’ll be throwing money down the drain.

Drink wisely

No one’s saying don’t have a good time, but to create a healthy gut, it’s important to be consistent with your dietary and lifestyle changes for a period of time to create resistant skin and gut microbiome. When you do decide to have a drink or a cheat meal, choosing something that has low sugar is going to have far less impact on your gut health and skin. The likelihood of breakouts and inflammation will be less as a result.

“TO CREATE A HEALTHY GUT, IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR DIETARY AND LIFESTYLE CHANGES FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.”

STYLE: ELIXIR SKIN FITNESS

Bulk up your fibre

Your gut is the gatekeeper to the rest of your body, so keeping it balanced plays a big part in getting your skin to look fresh. A diet high in fibre — whole foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, oats for breakfast, good carbohydrates such as pumpkin, sweet potato, corn and quinoa — helps gut bacteria to thrive so that it produces good metabolites to keep you healthy. This indirectly has a positive impact on your hormone levels, immunity and the health of your skin.

enzyme process that produces pigmentation are a must in my clients’ routines to achieve an even-toned complexion.

Embrace your age

As you approach your forties, your skin needs are completely different to when you were a teenager. This requires different treatments and nutrients in your products to nourish and keep your skin functioning at its best and looking young as you get older.

Get educated If you’ve ever needed an incentive to get eight hours, this is it. Anything less compromises the body’s repair mechanisms. To really kick it into gear, lather your skin with products made especially for night-time, such as vitamin A, which repairs cell structure and contains antioxidants designed to protect and repair against the elements.

Inflammatory conditions like eczema, rosacea, psoriasis and acne can strike at any age. While the triggers vary, addressing gut health and getting the right products for your skin is mandatory — the main thing to know is that they all stem from inside. I design personalised treatment plans for my clients so we can work together to rebuild and repair inflammatory skin conditions to create a long-term, sustainable change.
