TRAVEL METRO: THE PLAYFORD

New York vibe in the heart of Adelaide As soon as you enter Adelaide’s The Playford, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped back into a classy bygone era in New York City. WORDS Ryan Burgess

Y

ou can picture it — people dressed well, spoke well, ate and drank well and stayed in luxury. New York City might be 17,087 kilometres away but The Playford brings the essence of New York right to our very own bustling North Terrace. The luxurious lobby, filled with grand fittings and fixtures, will instantly make you feel a world away, as will their supremely appointed accommodation. Take, for example, their top-floor New York loft-style suites. The rooms vary in size and comfort. You’ll feel deliriously privileged among your own private sitting and dining areas, a kitchenette and the most amazing cloudlike bed atop the mezzanine in the sunsoaked room — I mean, what a treat! This five-star hotel features an impressive 182 rooms and we love that

they have teamed up with local South Australian artists to showcase their artwork in each of them. Guests staying at The Playford also have access to 24-hour pool and gym facilities, so when you’re craving that 2am swim, finally you’ve found a hotel where the pool doesn’t close at 9pm. We’re not the only ones completely mesmerised and in love with this spectacular hotel. The Playford won Best Restaurant in a Hotel in the 2019 SA Restaurant and Catering Awards, as well as coming runner-up nationwide. Last year saw them score the top gong for Gourmet Traveller’s Australian Wine List of the Year. It’s abundantly clear The Playford knows good food and drinks. With a strong focus on South Australia, the majority of food in their kitchen is local produce. The bar

L If you’re looking for a spectacular venue to celebrate your special day, we’ve found it. WORDS Hayley Pearson

ike something out of a romantic fantasy novel, Sunnybrae Estate is a dazzling garden estate, perfect for weddings and big celebrations. Just 10 minutes from our CBD, it’s one of Adelaide’s best kept secrets. Back in the 1880s, the estate was privately owned and used as farmland. Now, the buildings have been respectfully and beautifully renovated and the grounds maintained impeccably by the Liapis family. So, it’s time to let this secret out of the bag. Here are five things you didn’t know about Sunnybrae Estate.

TRAVEL METRO: SUNNYBRAE

The Marquee. Photo: Jack Small.

1. The location

Who would have thought that the industrial suburb of Regency Park was home to a spectacular wedding venue? With lush green lawns overlooking historical buildings and flower gardens, you’d assume you’re in for a fair drive to get there. Instead, Sunnybrae Estate is just five minutes from North Adelaide.

2. The exceptional food and wine

Don’t expect a generic alternate drop here — Sunnybrae Estate prides itself on outstanding food and wine packages. The lucky staff have regular lunch meetings where they taste and discuss what Head Chef Simon Richardson has put on the menu. General Manager Jimmy says, “Our team are our best critics, and it’s imperative that they absolutely love what we serve our guests”.

3. The personalised service and attention to detail

Just ask anyone who has planned a wedding with Sunnybrae Estate and they’ll tell you how remarkable the service is. Event managers Simmone and Dragana will go above and beyond to make sure you go into your wedding day relaxed and excited. They take all the stress away so you can have the most memorable day of your life — for all the right reasons. But don’t just believe us — here’s what some recent brides had to say about their wedding coordinators. “Thank you so much Dragana for all your support throughout the process of the wedding, you made everything so easy and stress free!” Amy said. “We were so happy and overwhelmed with every single element you provided us. Everything was absolutely perfect. All of our family, friends and guests were so impressed and thrilled with the quality of food, service and professionalism received and Sunnybrae exceeded all of our expectations!” Stacey said. “Simmone, everyone said how fantastic you were on the night and how nothing was too much trouble. You ensured we had a wonderful and relaxed day/night and we cannot thank you enough. We wish we could do it all over again,” Samantha said.

4. The options are endless

The grounds are home to several beautiful buildings and majestic garden areas, so depending on what you're after, they have something perfect to suit your style. The Coach House This rustic, barnstyle heritage room is perfect for big celebrations. The room can be set with round tables seating up to 230 guests, 300 at trestle tables or up to 400 cocktail style. The Pavillion With open views of the gorgeous rose and palm gardens, The Pavillion offers guests the opportunity to feast and party while also soaking in the beauty of the surrounding grounds. Perfect for more intimate affairs, The Pavillion seats up to 80 guests at round tables, 100 on trestle tables or up to 150 if choosing a cocktail-style package. The Marquee With its gorgeous white curved lines, clear sides and Wow-air conditioning, the beautiful marquee can be set as you wish — with round tables, long rows of trestle tables or filled with 700 of your nearest and dearest for a gigantic cocktail party.

5. The photo ops

Imagine getting married and not having to drive from one location to another to get wedding photos. At Sunnybrae, the photo opportunities are plentiful. With their winery-feel setting, palm garden, rose garden, rustic brick walls, heritage buildings, gorgeous interiors and lush grass, it’s a wedding photographer's dream. @sunnybrae_estate sunnybrae.com.au

TRAVEL REGIONAL: GLAMPING AT BOONGARRIE

Experience the ultimate luxury of falling asleep to the sounds of the country, and waking up in opulence, all while staying under a canvas eco-tent.

“PEOPLE LOVE THAT THEY’RE NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TOWN OR SURROUNDED BY OTHER CAMPERS; THEY HAVE THE FARM TO THEMSELVES.”

WORDS Hayley Pearson

G

lamping at Boongarrie boasts elegance, romance and relaxation in the Barossa region. Ideal for couples, honeymooners and anyone seeking an out-of-this-world experience, this luxury eco-tent looks out over paddocks and open farmland. You’ll spot horses, cows, sheep, plenty of native birdlife and, if you like dogs, you’ll get to know Sandy — Boongarrie’s friendly border collie.

Photo: Damien Flanagan.

Owners Kate and Garry created their luxury accommodation from a real passion for their land. “Our children had left home and we were sitting on our deck drinking a bottle of Barossa Shiraz, and I said to Garry, ‘It’s just us now, maybe we should share our amazing property with others?’” And that’s how Glamping at Boongarrie began. The accommodation has all the bells and whistles of a fancy African safari tent: kitchen facilities, a bespoke ensuite bathroom with a bathtub overlooking unforgettable views, barbeque, air conditioning, heating, TV, fairy lights, freshly-baked bread by Garry... you even get to enjoy a complementary bottle of fine Poonawatta red. Just a short walk across the road, around the sheep and past native trees, you’ll find yourself at Poonawatta Wines, where you can enjoy a wine tasting experience. Kate and Garry are all about supporting the region and local businesses. “The idea is to go out and explore during the day, visit the nearby conservation park, taste some of the region’s best wines, do

some shopping in nearby towns and then, late arvo, come back, kick back with a barbeque or platter, enjoy the sunset and switch off at Boongarrie,” Kate says. And because it’s close to the towns, you have complete freedom to move around without driving — grab a taxi or get picked up by one of the many Barossa tour operators. “People love that they’re not in the middle of the town or surrounded by other campers; they have the farm to themselves, including a fire pit (in winter), creek bed and dam. And though we live on the property, we don't cross paths with guests — unless of course they would like a chat, which many do.” This unique accommodation truly is a labour of love — so good, that Garry and Kate spent their wedding night there last year. And they gave it five stars. @glampingatboongarrie boongarrie.com.au

he magnificent bluestone house, Waverley Estate, is set on four acres and decorated in a distinctive French provincial style. The estate can sleep 22 people, making it a big hit for weddings, hen’s weekends, family reunions, work conferences, cooking classes, and art and meditation retreats. The main house boasts two bedrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen with an industrialsized oven (ideal for catering), and a lounge and dining room with open fireplace, and looks out onto five semi-self-contained bedrooms with ensuites.

Outside, the traditional lawn tennis court can be converted into the perfect pitch for backyard cricket and sunrise yoga. Or if you’re getting married, it easily slips into a magical setting with a large marquee, lavish long tables and fairy lights, overlooking the solar-heated swimming pool. The proud-as-punch owner Campbell has thought of everything. “Every bride wants to capture their special day and Waverley has photo opportunities everywhere you look,” he says. “From the petanque lawns, the beautiful central courtyard space with fire pit, the 100-year-old Moreton Bay fig trees, the vines and, of course, the 162-year-old house, you’re spoilt for choice.” Aside from soaking up the beautiful estate, there's plenty to do while you're there. spacious bedrooms, laundry and of course, 11,000 acres of ancient Outback beauty. Each house comes with its own barbeque, campfire pit and playground — it’s a kid’s wonderland! “We have five children, so we built something based on what we look for when we go away,'' owner Sharon says. And with more families taking grandma and pop on their family adventures (I mean, built in babysitters, so why wouldn’t you?), the McInnis family has made sure their self-contained houses are suitable for all generations, young and old. “We have plenty of things to do on the farm to keep all ages occupied,” Sharon says. Located in a secluded gorge, it offers all the creature comforts — privacy, views stretching out across the Flinders Ranges, and an abundance of native wildlife. Glampers get to cosy up in a queen-sized bed decked out in luxurious linen, with a small kitchenette and your own attached ensuite. If bush camping is more your thing, get back to basics and pitch your tent in their private campsites. It’s so remote that you’ll never have to face a crowd. @flinders_bush_retreats flindersbushretreats.com.au

TRAVEL REGIONAL: STOWAWAY KI

True luxury on Kangaroo Island

Now more than ever, we need to support our sisters and brothers on Kangaroo Island. WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Nadine Wilkinson

“FROM THE MOMENT OUR GUESTS OPEN THE DOOR, WE WANT THEM TO FEEL LIKE THEY ARE REALLY TREATING THEMSELVES.”

- 20

TRAVEL REGIONAL: STOWAWAY KI

B

efore the recent bushfires, Kangaroo Island had fast become a bucket-list destination for local and international travellers, full of gorgeous wildlife, mouth-watering restaurants, cellar doors and next-level luxury accommodation — like this beauty, Stowaway KI. The idyllic retreat was saved when Mother Nature decided to rain, leaving the property untouched. The panoramic views of the property have changed slightly but are still beautiful and, as the land begins to regenerate, it’ll become even more spectacular. I spoke to co-owner Carly about this blissful couple’s retreat.

You and your husband Adam have created an exceptional travel experience. What made you want to start Stowaway?

In all honesty, it was the need to create a flexible job after I had my second child. I was a full-time farmer and it became apparent that I needed to make some changes to accommodate the little people in my life. I’d seen an exclusive couple’s retreat concept on a global farming tour in the Scottish Highlands and it stuck with me as something that would work on our farm. I also knew there was demand for a true luxury offering. I was always fielding recommendation requests on where to stay to celebrate a special milestone and always felt frustrated that I didn’t have any. Five years later, here we are.

How do you want people to feel when they stay at Stowaway?

In one word: spoiled. We know how hard it can be to find the time to get away as a

couple. From the moment our guests open the door, we want them to feel like they are really treating themselves — from the smell of fresh bread when they walk in to the decadence of a glass of Champagne in the hot tub at sunset.

Tell us about the buildings and why they’re designed the way they are.

The Stowaway retreats have been built with privacy in mind and are designed to be a destination in themselves. You literally feel like the only people in the world, there. You can take time out of a crazy, busy world, truly relax and have an actual conversation with your partner. You could easily spend two days there and not feel the need to leave. Each retreat has a glass-fronted sauna, double-sided fireplace, big hot tub, alfresco deck area and a sleek and modern style, while still feeling like you are going back to nature. We chose a lot of natural stone and timber, made the bathrooms really big, and put in cosy reading window nooks so even when the weather is less than ideal, you still feel connected to the environment around you. We have two luxury options — The Nest and Sleepy Hollow. Both are luxe with their own charm and come with all the fabulous frills and views. We even have a massage service, which gets used a lot.

You and Adam are proud KI-ers. For people who are yet to experience Kangaroo Island, what are they missing out on?

Even though KI is not that far away, I liken it to stepping back in time 20 years — to

a time where things were slower and simpler. If you want a trip where you don’t have to see anyone, then that can be easily achieved, or if you feel like winery/ distillery hopping, then that’s on offer, too. Being surrounded by nature even as it’s regenerating, is also good for your wellbeing, and KI has it in spades. @stowaway_ki stowawayki.com.au

Stokes Bay beach and The Rockpool Café Five minutes down the road from the Stowaways, this beach has a secret tunnel, naturallyformed rockpool and the promise of locally-caught fish with chips and a glass of wine. Dudley Wines The views are off the charts and it’s on the way to the ferry, so it’s really convenient. KI Spirits Their gin is practically an icon and the quirky cellar door is always serving up a new and inventive cocktail — the locals love it as much as the visitors. Emu Bay Lavender Farm Right near Emu Bay, it serves modern, fresh and local breakfast and lunch. Run by a dynamic mum and daughter, it’s true KI hospitality.

middle of a beautiful area to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and enjoy time with each other.” It’s the little touches that make it so special. The caravan park gets a 5pm buzz with a social happy hour, and the cabins are decked out with balcony areas so you can enjoy your morning cuppa listening to kookaburras and magpies. The fire pit is the perfect spot to swap stories with your tent neighbour. Try your hand at the oversized chess board, check out the half-sized basketball court or hire a pedal go-kart to keep the kids busy. Backing onto Coulthard Reserve, the opportunities for guests of the park to soak in their surroundings are endless. There are walking trails stretching far and wide, and even the rustic Bush Chapel sitting out the back, making it the perfect spot for an outdoor wedding. The staff at this holiday destination are some of the most knowledgeable people in the Barossa, full of fun facts and day-trip recommendations that can be tailored to you. At the BIG4 Barossa, it’s all about supporting local and encouraging guests to see and do as much as they possibly can in the region — whether it’s on foot or bike, or onboard the Wine Wagon to tour some of the region’s best wineries.

Next time you’re searching for a weekend escape, book into the BIG4 Barossa. You’ll leave feeling recharged and refreshed after enjoying the luxury of having the entire region on your doorstep. @big4barossatouristpark barossatouristpark.com.au

The enjoyment of the park is amplified when you learn that the BIG4 Barossa is actually a community-owned piece of land, run by a board of local volunteers, with funds being used to maintain the local sporting grounds. What better way to immerse yourself in country life than by enjoying a footy match on the oval that backs onto the park?

ipple at Port Willunga is located in prime holiday territory — two blocks from Port Willunga beachfront and just 10 minutes from all your favourite McLaren Vale wineries. What a treat! This light and sun-filled two-storey townhouse is available to rent throughout the year, and features open-plan living, a modern kitchen and dining area decorated with colourful prints and original artwork by local South Australian artists, polished concrete floors and three bedrooms.

It’s small enough for a romantic getaway and large enough to bring the whole family and stay for the long haul. Owners Natalie and Symon have two small children and wanted to create a home away from home for families to enjoy. And because they have kids, they’ve thought of everything. “We made sure it has a gorgeous alfresco entertaining area, a barbeque and a Nespresso coffee machine, and comes equipped with beach toys, beach chairs, bikes, umbrellas, towels and an outdoor shower. It’s everything you need to get barefoot and sandy on a beach holiday,” Natalie says. Oh, and they also get parents’ needs, too — there’s a complementary bottle of Alpha Box & Dice Prosecco on arrival, breakfast is provided and there’s a separate upstairs retreat where kids can watch TV and be noisy without bothering the adults (and vice-versa). Given it’s literally a short walk down a flower-lined lane to the beach, it’s ideal for wedding guests and bridal parties to stay after a ceremony at The Star Of Greece, or even one of the local wineries. @rippleatportwillunga airbnb.com/h/rippleatportwillunga

became a self-appointed train expert after I whet my whistle travelling on the Indian Pacific from Adelaide to Perth a few years ago, and then fell deeper in love with train travel on board the iconic Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin. So when I heard that Journey Beyond’s first premium rail experience spanning Australia’s south east had just launched, I was on it. This shiny new addition to internationallyrenowned Aussie rail journeys offers the same exceptional service as both The Ghan and Indian Pacific. Tip: bring your stretchy pants because you’ll be dining like royalty on carefully-curated regional menus in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant or Platinum Club. You’ll relax in the bar with a drink in hand as you pass by gorgeous country towns, cities and wildlife. And with 28

carriages, Great Southern accommodates over 200 guests across Gold and Platinum cabins. I’ve been lucky enough to stay in both and they’re fantastic. The Platinum bedrooms are next-level luxury — spacious, with super-comfortable double beds and large bathrooms with separate showers. The two-night, three-day picturesque adventure is all-inclusive of meals and bevvies, including nightcaps delivered to your bedroom on demand (#livingthedream). It also includes a list of outstanding off-train excursions, giving you a bunch of outings to choose from in each location. Trust me, Journey Beyond makes sure that every excursion is bespoke and exciting. I loved them so much, I wrote a diary of our funfilled off-train adventures in the Grampians, Canberra and Coffs Harbour.

TRAVEL REGIONAL: JOURNEY BEYOND

The Grampians

Grampians National Park is nature at its finest — sandstone mountains, wildflowers and plenty of wildlife. We were escorted off the train by the super-friendly staff (again, I felt like the Queen). Our guide took us on an easy walk to Venus Baths in Halls Gap, where we took in the enormity of the giant rock formations and learnt about the rich history of the national park. Venus Baths is where locals cooled down and bathed 100 years ago and, depending on the time of year you visit, you might be able to put on your bathers and take a dip, too. After our tour, dinner was served in a spectacular field that was decked out with a marquee, festoon lights and fun garden games. As the sun went down across the peaks of the Grampians, we kicked back with a local sparkling red and freshly-distilled ginger beer, wondering why we hadn’t visited this part of the world sooner.

Canberra

Essentially we all own a piece of Parliament House, so why wouldn’t you visit at least once in your lifetime? Our guided tour included a delicious lunch in the Great Hall and a visit to the 30thanniversary spectacular, Lego Parliament House, made by Ryan ‘The BrickMan’ McNaught from more than 150,000 bricks. We had a field day finding all the political titbits he’d included — Lego Larissa Waters breastfeeding in Parliament, a couple of Lego people making out in the photocopier room, a Lego journalist interviewing a tree. Who would have thought that Parliament House could make you lol? Next stop, the National Gallery. With a revolving display of masterpieces from all over the world, as well as permanent pieces that you can enjoy all year round, this is an art lover’s dream. We spent the afternoon immersing ourselves in the works of Picasso and Japanese contemporary artist Yayo Ikusama.

Coffs Harbour

After a winding bus trip up the mountains, we ended up at Sealy Lookout. The thrillseekers of the group took on the Skywalk overlooking Coffs Harbour, with its lush banana plantations, blueberry fields, stunning coastline and enormous mansions. We were then whisked away to Coffs beachfront for morning tea. Journey Beyond doesn’t miss a beat, setting up a marquee exclusively for guests of Great Southern, with endless fruit platters, refreshments and an ice-cream cart. There, you can relax and socialise with your new friends or get sand between your toes and explore. We did both. That afternoon, we arrived in sunny Brisbane, where you can either make your own arrangements to fly home to Adelaide or jump back on Great Southern the following day for more wild train adventures. The return trip from Brisbane to Adelaide is a four-day, three-night journey with different tour options in Coffs Harbour, Port Stephens, Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. @journeybeyondrail journeybeyondrail.com.au

Obviously, we nailed that part. As always, the food is sensational at Club Med, with the freshest seafood, premium wagyu beef and award-winning locally brewed spirits that will warm you up in no time. You can leave your wallets in your room, because everything is included — three gourmet meals a day, all-day snacking and of course, the premium open bar where you can chill out, warm up and enjoy your fill of the most magical views you’ve ever seen.

And as usual, we had all the gear and no idea. I mean, we look like Dumb and Dumber but you can always gear up in style with their rental equipment, then take to the slopes for endless half pipes and snow sledding and even try their ice slide. Even if you don't ski, there is plenty to do for first-time snow travellers. I didn’t take my kiddlets this time but in hindsight it would have been a wonderful thing. FEEL GOOD: WALFORD

Unapologetically girl-focused She knows everyone by name and anyone who crosses her path adores her. She’s an incredible leader and at the forefront of helping young Adeladies grow into strong, passionate, thriving human beings. Meet Rebecca Clarke, Principal of Walford.

WORDS Hayley Pearson

I absolutely loved my time at Walford; I'll be forever singing the school's praises. As Principal, tell us why you love Walford.

We have a remarkable community made up of talented and cheerful students, dedicated staff and inspirational old scholars. I get to spend every day with them, listening and learning, so we can help each student develop confidence in her own ability. The programs and opportunities we provide are focused unapologetically on girls and empowering them.

I heard one teacher has recently been recognised with an outstanding award?

Deb Woodard-Knight (affectionately known as ‘Woody’) was recently announced as

- 32

Australia’s most outstanding teacher of secondary mathematics by the Australian Mathematical Science Institute. Deb has more than 38 years’ experience, helps our girls develop confidence in their abilities and sets them up for success in the subject.

I’ve always loved how progressive Walford is. How are you helping students be ‘future-ready’ through science, technology, engineering and mathematics?

Our new science space and design technology laboratories are inspiring learning, but it’s excellent teaching that matters most. Being future-ready isn’t solely about STEM — girls can become musicians, linguists, exercise physiologists, economists... whatever they choose.

FEEL GOOD: WALFORD

Tell us about out-of-school opportunities that Walford offers to its girls.

Through the co-curricular program, the students have vast opportunities, like Generations in Jazz in Mount Gambier, overseas exchanges to France, China and Spain, and a biennial trip to NASA space camp. Popular sports include rowing, sailing, Pedal Prix and soccer. Last year, students were mentors to children on holiday camps through Kickstart for Kids and served meals at the Mary Magdalene Centre. I recently went plogging (litter collecting while jogging) with two of our Year Nines and I am learning to play golf to keep up with some of our golfers.

What sets Walford apart from other all-girl schools?

We have unique opportunities for students — our Year Nine girls participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Plus we’re the only girls’ school in the nation to offer the continuum of the International Baccalaureate program. The ethos of the school has always remained family-focused — it’s the relationships within the Walford community that really set us apart, and the

intangible quality of the school, which must be felt to be understood. Girls at Walford are agents of change and listening to them and learning from them, celebrating their successes and walking alongside them during challenging times, is at the heart of our identity as a school.

I’ve heard the Early Learning Centre at Walford is incredible. Can you tell me more?

Our Early Learning Centre is led by Charmaine Brooks and her dedicated team, who treat each child as their own. We offer playgroup for babies and toddlers (with parents or grandparents) and we have a mid-year Reception program in Walford Junior School. Families can access the Australian Government Child Care Subsidy in our ELC.

For past students who haven’t seen the school since they graduated, what’s changed?

Our boarders are well taken care of, with private single rooms with ensuites, and our café serves meals and provides a beautiful alfresco area. The Walford Sports Centre on Unley Road provides a fully-equipped

gymnasium, dance studio and double courts. Keep an eye on the Parks Playing Fields, where our new pavilion is under construction and will improve the playing space and provide an indoor learning space. We recently opened our award-winning Ellen Benham Science Centre, and in early 2020, our Design Technology Centre will be opened, featuring design laboratories, a maker space and a demonstration kitchen for nutrition. Our next project is a new art gallery and performance theatre… stay tuned! @walfordschool walford.net.au/admissions

his family-owned-and-run local business specialises in air conditioning, solar design and installation for commercial businesses and private homes. Their bread and butter is giving you more efficient and eco-friendly results. This puts them firmly in the hot seat to dish the advice on small changes in our own backyard to do wonders for our beautiful planet and our wellbeing, and save some big bucks along the way. Here are their hot tips…

A D E L A D Y M A G A Z I N E \ I SS U E 3

Photo: Jarrod Knoblauch.

1. Start small. Correct lighting can have a huge impact on your overall health and wellbeing. Swapping your light bulbs to LED is an uber smart move. Here’s why: • Although a higher upfront cost, LED bulbs are safer (won’t get as hot as halogen globes), more energy efficient (using around 75 percent less energy than halogen) and have a longer lifespan.

- 34

• Most LED bulbs don’t contain any hazardous materials and can be recycled more easily than CFL and halogen globes, which is great for Planet Earth. • Lighting has a direct relationship to the production of the stress hormone (cortisol) and the sleep hormone (melatonin). Getting this right can make a big difference to your mood and your sleep patterns. • You get more flexibility with dimming LEDs compared to traditional lights, which is particularly important at night to assist your body with hormone production. 2. Get conditioned. Not only important to bring down the sweat levels in summer and warm cold bones in winter, good air con can make a world of difference in your home or office. Things to keep top of mind:

FEEL GOOD: GREEN EFFICIENT LIVING

Photo: Kate Dyer.

BEHIND THE SCENES Photo: Kate Dyer.

• Do it right the first time. A good air con can last up to 20 years if installed and looked after — cheaper options may only give you five years, meaning waste and money bleeding out your pockets. • Quality ductwork also means better insulation properties, so the air pumping into your house will be hotter or colder, making it more efficient. • Keep it clean. Dirty filters reduce the air quality you and your loved ones are breathing in. You can even get special filters that protect the unit while filtering out dust mites, pollen and all the teeny bits of fur, feathers and skin floating through the air from your beloved pets... eek! • Tend to your patch. An annual service plus filter clean or change will increase system performance and lifespan. Green Efficient Living’s golden rule is to check, clean or change your filters with every seasonal change. • Work smarter, not harder. Running your air con properly will make a big difference to the dreaded power bill. The lower your heating is set in winter and the higher your cooling setting in summer, the less power you’ll use and the less money you’ll spend. Ideally, set it on 20–22˚C on heating with a low fan speed in winter, and 22–26˚C on cooling with a high fan speed during the summer (give or take how the weather is travelling).

3. Invest wisely. Getting solar panels is a big step in the right direction and our environment and your wallet will thank you for it. Did you know that quality panels will offset their CO2 emissions in approximately three to five years, actually making them CO2 positive? You can breathe easy, knowing you’re relying less on fossil fuels, plus you’ll see a difference in the dollar figure on your bills. Here’s what to consider: • Size matters. Getting the wrong-sized system for your needs will cause all sorts of headaches and may actually end up costing you. • Get the right touch. Correct installation is a big-ticket safety item for the Green Efficient Living crew (to avoid risks such as electrocution and fire hazards). Having it done right the first time will also boost the performance of the system. • Water your investment. A little maintenance can go a long way and guaranteed, if you leave a problem until it’s dire, it will cost. Regular cleaning of your solar panels means spotting issues before they arise — simple things like removing debris and fixing weather damage and general wear and tear will avoid a mountain instead of a molehill.

Adelaide brothers Mitch and Kody Toeroek have more than 29 years’ experience matching your desire for comfort, functionality and style. Their goal is to give you the highest standard of air con and solar so you get great bang for your buck and reduced energy bills. These inspiring legends have built their business from the ground up and now have a crew of 27. With everyone looking for more ways to be green, it’s no surprise this hard-working bunch has gone gangbusters. Give them a call on 8297 3422.

you’ll notice your skin changes, you’ll have better brain function, be less tired and, according to experts, headaches are less likely to happen,” Steve says. “It’s not about skulling water once a day and ticking a box, it’s about having regular smaller sips throughout the day. Your friends will notice the change in your wellbeing and I bet they’ll be saying, ‘I want what she’s having’.” You’ll feel proud as punch bringing your Botell to your next meeting or pilates class. Forget water bottle envy because you’ll have the classiest, smartest, most sociallyresponsible accessory in the room. It even comes in a range of colourful lids so you can match it with your fave outfit.

Not just a pretty product, Botell has been cleverly designed to eliminate all the things that would normally annoy you about regular plastic bottles. With its speciallydesigned lid, you won’t have to worry about leaking — it has a built-in protector and triple seals, so your lips will never touch a spout that’s been visited by a fly or a dog’s tongue (gross!). And with thermo qualities, the walls of the cylinder are so thick, your water will stay cool for much longer. And the cherry on top? Botell is proudly designed and manufactured right here in South Australia, proving that the best comes from our own backyard. @botellhydrate

emember the picture book Where Did I Come From? It covered all the fun facts from love-making, orgasms, conception and the baby growing inside the womb through to the actual birth day. But for thousands of Adeladies, it’s not relatable at all — because baby making isn’t that easy, and sometimes it takes three to tango. Located in the Ashford Specialist Centre, with plenty of parking close by, Family Fertility is an SA-owned-and-operated state-of-the-art centre that offers a personalised service helping couples and singles start a family. So, how can they help you? One in six couples have fertility issues, so if you’ve begun your baby-making journey and nothing is happening, you’re not alone. Before you start to stress, ask your GP for an AMH blood test. This test will point you in the direction of approximately how many eggs you have to play with. If the results come back with a low egg count, take a deep breath and give Family Fertility Centre a call. From day dot, owner and Medical Director Marcin Stankiewicz and Senior Gynecologist Angelique Swart are on your baby-making adventure with you — they’re there to give you open and honest advice. In your first meeting, they’ll ask all kinds of questions, and will most likely do some blood tests and scans. They treat every person individually because, with more than 100 years combined experience between the specialists and staff, they understand that every couple is different. Family Fertility can also help same-sex couples find that pot of gold at the end of their rainbow, with donor sperm. You’ll have access to local Adelaide sperm donors as well as sperm donors from America. Dr Marcin and Dr Angelique will work closely with you to track your cycle and, once you’ve chosen your donor sperm, they’ll proceed with treatment that may include IUI insemination, which is much less invasive than IVF. Adelads are also welcome, as sometimes their swimmers are not in top form. It’s best to get tested and get the right advice early on, as lifestyle can impact them, and small changes can produce big results.

THERE ARE MANY NON INVASIVE PATHS YOU CAN GO DOWN BEFORE IVF BECOMES AN OPTION.

When faced with a fertility struggle, most Adeladies assume they have to go straight to IVF, but there are many non-invasive paths before IVF becomes an option, and Dr Marcin and Dr Angelique will explore all of them. No matter which way your fertility path leads, you’ll have the same doctor the whole way through, so you can feel completely comfortable the entire time. All the single ladies, please stand up! If you’re approaching 30 and getting anxious at the pressure of the so-called ‘ticking clock’, why not freeze your eggs? Women can have babies well into their forties, but it might require some help to get started. you’d like to have a baby with a partner, they can start the IVF cycle with you. Or, if you’re wanting to start a family on your own, they can help you, with donor sperm. “We have a close-knit team of staff who all understand that your embryos are your hopes and dreams and that regular communication and consultation is extremely important to you,” Dr Marcin says. s a mama of a little guy who needs a leg up, I know that a dash of guidance can make the world of difference for the whole fam. The legends at local clinic Talkative Allied Health are ready, arms open, to be that shining light. Does your littlie struggle with speech delays, stuttering, or swallowing issues? Did they have trouble transitioning to solids or maybe they’re a fussy eater? Using evidence-based strategies, the Talkative team works with infants from around six weeks to 18 years to help with all these types of challenges, plus social skill development, dyslexia, auditory processing disorder and even voice therapy.

- 42

The team is led by Senior Speech Pathologist Kat Bray, a former primary school teacher who has worked with the Bachelor and Master of Speech Pathology cohort for six years. Her knowledgeable team is passionate about helping each child and their family to thrive.

LET’S TALK ‘HOW’

“Children do their best learning when they feel happy and safe. We tap into their personal interests — Star Wars, footy, unicorns, you name it — to make it fun and exciting to build their skills, confidence and resilience in a way that translates to everyday life,” Kat says. And, the team has a range of group therapies. The Kids In The Kitchen program works with small groups to assist with things like fussy eating, following instructions, sensory regulation, trying new foods, getting messy, setting a table and enjoying the social aspect of meals. They even work with older kids in practical situations in the community. “It's making situations that can feel overwhelming do-able, which can be life-changing for young people. Our work

The core of this learning hotpot is a personal touch and individualised approach — the team embrace each family, leading to more motivated, confident and happy little people. As Kat says: "Every child who walks through our doors is celebrated as an individual. We help build upon our clients’ strengths, so they can be the best version of themselves and feel amazing." or Louise, losing her eyesight when she was just 26 was the first sign she had multiple sclerosis (MS). Thankfully, her eyesight has now returned, although ongoing attacks mean it goes again sometimes. The disease has affected her upper spinal cord and she has constant cramping and spasms in her hands, fatigue and headaches. There is no known cause or cure for this condition, which affects the central nervous system and interferes with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. As the most common degenerative neurological condition in young adults, over 75 percent of people diagnosed are under the age of 40, when many people are juggling careers and family. “I was working in a high-pressure job and building a life with my husband. Suddenly, I was unable to even sign my own name.

The support and guidance in those first few months of my diagnosis from an MS nurse proved critical to my mental health and understanding which path of treatment would be best for me,” Louise says. Firm in the belief that knowledge is power, the MS Society continues to empower people like Louise and her family to understand the disease and her symptoms, access treatments and navigate the intense emotions that can come with a diagnosis. “The nurses at the MS Society not only guided me through my treatment process but they also provided daily support, whether it was face to face or over the phone, to ensure I was coping with my condition.” While it has not been an easy road, in the past 14 years, Louise (now 40) has faced the challenges and continued to fulfil her dreams with the ongoing support of many, including the MS Society.

Being diagnosed with MS can be overwhelming, but with the support of the MS Society, Louise Hayton not only faced the challenges but is also pursuing her dreams... “Falling pregnant with our twins, who are now seven, was particularly challenging as I couldn’t take medication for the first two years of their lives. Things like opening a zip-lock bag or a sachet of formula was just about impossible, but having kids has been more of a blessing than I ever could have imagined.” As a non-government, not-for-profit organisation, the MS Society relies on fundraising, such as their MS Game Changer Lottery, to provide support to the thousands of South Australians living with MS, like Louise and her family. “From day one, I was really freaking out, but they’ve had my back and really do what they say they’ll do. Their help has been invaluable and I’m lucky to be living a beautiful life despite its challenges.” @ms_sa_nt

s a school dedicated to agriculture, Scotch is leading the way with a progressive approach to learning, designed to ensure students can excel by exploring topics and innovative ways of learning. Just one of their many handson agricultural courses, winemaking is capturing the minds of future generations and inspiring them to take a leap into this exciting industry. Head of Agriculture Ilka Klepper says the course is offered to students in Year 11 when vintage is occurring, using their onsite vineyard to take a holistic approach to the industry. “The program encourages students to look at how berries are maturing, their ripeness, and making decisions on when to pick, based on the chemistry behind it

all. They have to follow through with their decisions based on sugar levels and work to create the wine from there,” Ilka says. “A big focus is making them capable of critical decisions throughout the process. As we do with all our agricultural courses, we also look at the marketing and sales side of the industry and get a big picture of the whole business as an enterprise model.” Following two years of white varieties, students made a Shiraz for the first time in 2019. Steven and Danielle Read from Rathmine Vines also supplied Sauvignon Blanc grapes, so the students were able to focus on different stages of the process and the nuances of each variety. For Year 11 student Mia Osborn, the decision to do winemaking was an easy one — as the youngest daughter of

d’Arenberg’s Chester Osborn, she’s been raised among vineyards. The drawcard for Mia to go to Scotch has always been the progressive approach and the extensive facilities to study practical subjects like agriculture.

“I’ve always been surrounded by the wine industry and find Dad’s passion for the industry as a whole so interesting. Being able to formally learn through school has been fascinating — from what happens in the vineyard and making the wine to marketing, sales and stocks.” But the big feather in the cap for Mia’s oenology class was when Scotch entered a Sauvignon Blanc in the Royal Adelaide Wine Show. It won the TAFE SA Trophy for Best Wine Made by a School. This was followed by Mia herself taking out the CCL Label Solutions Award for Best Wine Label at the show, which the judges described as, “flavoursome, celebratory and very appropriate for the purpose”. The best part about the whole course for Mia? “Now when Dad talks about wine, I get the complexities behind it. No matter which part of the industry you want to explore, understanding the actual process behind making the wine is the perfect foundation and makes me even more

passionate about pursuing a career in the industry, plus it will be easier to go into uni having that background.” And for Chester, aside from being a proud Dad, he sees the course as a great introduction to a wider industry that’s significant for Australian tourism. “There are not many schools that provide courses like this and not many kids who would necessarily consider it as a career, but this sparks their interest and gives them an opportunity to think about it,” he says. “South Australia is the food and wine mecca, with 80 percent of Australia’s premium wine originating from here. It’s big business for national and international tourism, and letting our next generation sink their teeth into it from a young age is going to breed a new generation that’s hungry for this vibrant industry.” @scotchcollege scotch.sa.edu.au

With old-fashioned service that we all love, if you don’t find what you’re looking for, just ask. They’re always happy to go above and beyond, and will even source items for you from all around the world. Their point of difference is that everything they offer encourages learning through play and is high quality. You will

et’s get something straight, I’m a huge fan of South Australia’s public libraries. I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t addicted to reading, so spending a couple of hours perusing the quiet aisles at my local library has always been an indulgence. Yet, as the years went by, I lost touch with my library love and, sadly, their embracing of ebooks passed me by. When disaster struck and my beloved Kindle

died, I found myself in a library again and realised just how far South Australia’s public libraries have come. Everything you need is right at your fingertips, and I was itching to dive back into this wonderful world of books, information and so much more. If it’s been a while since your last visit, let me refresh you on everything that’s waiting for you behind those welcoming library doors…

4. Sign important documents

Forget the stress of those pesky forms that must be signed by a Justice of the Peace — you’ll find a JP at many libraries, and they provide a range of services. Just make sure to check their availability and office hours before dropping in.

5. Toys galore

1. All ages allowed

From bubs through to seniors, there’s something for everyone at the library. Studies show the most active period of brain development is from birth to three years of age, with exposure to stories and language making a big difference. So pop into one of the Storytime or Babytime programs with your brood to start stimulating their little brains, then grab a coffee with the other parents afterwards. Many libraries have regular programs and activities for all ages, such as author talks, special events, educational programs and craft sessions. Check with your local library to see what’s on the agenda.

2. Access over 50,000 ebooks and audiobooks

Now that’s a lot of books! Reading or listening to books on a device has become one of the most popular ways to access books, and now you can borrow any time and enjoy automatic returns with no late fees. The collection keeps growing and they’re always adding new titles, so you’ll never run out of a good read. Find them at libraries.sa.gov.au/ebooks

Why not borrow some toys from the public libraries toy collection? You’ll save money, it’s less wasteful for the environment, plus your kids won’t get sick of the same old toys. The Lego range is on a whole new level… check with your library to see if it has a toy collection.

6. Read all your favourite magazines in your own time

No more quickly flicking through a mag at the hairdressers or gingerly touching a dog-eared copy in a doctor's waiting room — now, you can get all your favourite magazines for free on your smartphone or tablet. We’re talking everything from Australian Women’s Weekly and Vogue Australia to Better Homes & Gardens, The Guardian, Men’s Health and more. Also, I highly recommend this great read, called Adelady mag. Find them at libraries.sa.gov.au/digitalmags

7. Pick up at one library, return at another

Because all of our public libraries are connected by the OneCard network, you can you borrow something at one library and return it at another. Plus you’ve now got millions of items to choose from, as the collections from all South Australian libraries have been combined.

Your local library is the perfect place to indulge in ‘me time’, where you can sink into some comfy furniture and read whatever takes your fancy on the shelves… it’s the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. libraries.sa.gov.au

KEEP THE LIBRARY IN YOUR POCKET

The Libraries SA app lets you use your phone as a library card and also look up the catalogue to place items on hold with just a few clicks. You can even scan any book, DVD or CD barcode to see if it’s available in the library — perfect for when you’re at friend’s house or even out shopping. Search for ‘Libraries SA’ on the AppStore or GooglePlay.

3. Dally in the digital world

Not only do all libraries provide access to the internet, computers and printing, but many also have educational programs on how to be safe online, online shopping and using social media — ideal for people who want to stay connected but are a bit nervous about diving into the online world. Some libraries also have maker spaces where you can learn about robotics, coding and how to use 3D printers.

8. Unwind

You don’t have to walk into a library to join these days. Visit libraries.sa.gov.au/join for digital membership and start accessing digital services immediately, such as ebooks and digital mags. On 3 June, our city will be painted blue and maroon and people will flock here from all over Australia to witness the bestof-three between two rival states, with a rivalry going back 40 years. So, for the fear of missing out, here’s five reasons we should embrace Holden State Of Origin in SA.

1. The competitive spirit

It’s electric and contagious. Even if you’re sitting on the fence over which team to barrack for, you can’t stop the force. (The first time I’ve ever used a Star Wars reference.)

2. The iconic venue

Adelaide Oval is one of the most picturesque sporting grounds in the world. Some of the biggest international bands and sporting teams have chosen to play here — it’s luxurious, comfortable and on par with other world-class stadiums when it comes to viewing platforms.

3. It will do wonders for SA tourism With thousands of people visiting us who may have never had Adelaide on their radar as a holiday destination, we’ll dazzle them with our restaurants, coffee shops, bars, hotels and beauty. Millions of fans will also have their eyes glued to us on TV screens and laptops around the world.

4. The players

Hello ladies… the players aren’t just a joy to watch for being some of the best athletes in the country, if you know what I mean.

5. You can package it up

NRL Hospitality offers a large range of official State of Origin Corporate Hospitality packages, such as private suites and boxes and signature dining packages, providing you with premium seating, access to ambassadors, merch and more. FOOD: KYTONS

Hands up who wants a baker’s man who can bake us a cake as fast as he can? WORDS Em Worthington

W

e’ve all been there — the school bake sale, a last-minute playdate or someone unexpectedly drops by and you just don’t have the time (or the skills) to whip up something delicious. This is where Kytons has your back.

FLASHBACK

Twenty or so years ago, schools and kindies were buzzing with lamington drives, so chances are you’ve happily munched on a Kytons Lamington. The best news — they’re still just as delectable and even come in cute-as-a-bug’s-ear mini size, perfect for lunchbox treats or with a cuppa. They’re so fresh, you’ll find them in the fridge section at your local Drakes or Foodland. Yummo! And yes, they still do those drives, so if you have a sporting club, social group or school, ask Kytons about fundraising with their yummy lamingtons, hot cross buns and other goodies.

Locally made in Adelaide since 1938 (currently in Edwardstown), this iconic South Aussie brand gives you awardwinning home-style baking that can conveniently be stored in your fridge, freezer or pantry, ready for those unexpected moments. Kytons has been around for eons, and one thing that hasn’t changed is their commitment to quality — you can taste it in every bite. Think handy treats like crunchy cookies, LaWaffles, fluffy little clouds of lamington goodness, slices and soul-warming hot cross buns. They do pies and pasties for the savoury lovers, and add a splash of decadence to your afternoon snack with macadamia slice or rocky road. So, what’s their secret? It’s simple — a stack of top-quality, mainly local ingredients and a whole lotta love. Their products are so much more than something you just stuff in your gob. As owner Sharon says, “It’s a lamington shared between a grandparent and grandchild, the hot cross buns on the Easter weekend… It’s all about a tasty excuse to bring family and friends together to create special moments”.

BEHIND THE SCENES

A family-founded business, Kytons Bakery has kept that connection — it’s been sold twice but only ever to a family friend of the previous owner. It was written in the stars for current owners Darren and Sharon Sutton to take over the reins in 2003, given Darren spent his teenage years working at the bakery during the busy Easter period. These close ties speak volumes about the foundation of trust and passion behind this much-loved brand.

FOOD: CAFÉ SIA

Whether you’re a Gawler local or just passing through, you owe it to yourself to stop in at Café Sia for a meal to remember. WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Gemma-Marie Corti

S

itting on the edge of wine country, Café Sia is the ultimate dining experience — there’s literally something for everyone. From the warm and welcoming atmosphere, both inside and outdoors, and the array of food on offer to the beautiful people running the show, every element of this award-winning eatery says ‘family’. “We’ve always been around food — for us, food means family, it’s how we show love,” owner Cathy says. And there’s certainly love in abundance at Café Sia. For more than five years, the Haidar families have been working alongside their tight-knit team, making sure everything runs smoothly. The modern Australian menu, influenced by both families’ Italian and Lebanese heritage, has plenty of gluten-free, vegan and keto options for those with dietary requirements, making it easier for families to enjoy a meal together. “We don’t want it to feel like you are going out for dinner — we want it to feel like a homecoming,” Cathy says.

“FOR US, FOOD MEANS FAMILY, IT’S HOW WE SHOW LOVE.” As long as the doors are open, so is the kitchen — which means if you’re feeling like a late brekky at 11am or an early dinner at 4pm, you’ll be able to grab a good feed of quality food. On the run? The entire menu is available as takeaway as well. You get bang for your buck with each dish, too, with generous serving sizes of comforting, warm and filling food.

IT’S GOOD TO GIVE BACK

Some personal favourites are the buttermilk pancakes, sharing plates, Atlantic salmon and any of the gluten-free risottos (paired with a crisp Clare Valley Riesling). If you’re looking for a family winner, pop in on a Monday night from 5pm for a carb-loaded pizza and pasta fest with the all-you-can-eat pizza and pasta buffet. To be honest, anyone who uses the hashtag #pizzaislife on their menu has our tick of approval, so pop in between 8am and 9pm any day of the week for a Sia-rously good meal. @cafe_sia

In a community as supportive as Gawler, being involved in local events is a must for any business to survive, which is probably why Café Sia continues to thrive — they’ve got so much community spirit. Teaming up with local sporting clubs and schools, donating vouchers and pizzas to feed the community, as well as their free time, is non-negotiable for the Haidar families. In return, regulars become friends and the people of Gawler become walking and talking advertisements for Café Sia. And that right there is why there’s nothing better than supporting local.

elcome to Lloyd Brothers Wine and Olive Company in McLaren Vale. This perfect and pristine family-owned winery in South Australia’s southern wine region is the type of place you could spend hours — or days, if they’d let you. Start by losing yourself in their cellar door, sampling their many different varietals, from McLaren Vale reds to their estate-grown Adelaide Hills whites (including sparklings), as well as classic Rosé. Free with your personalised tasting comes great passion and knowledge behind every last drop. Between sips, taking a walk through their cellar door will provide instant relief for those facing the stresses of any upcoming gift giving. Among the exquisite estategrown olives, olive oil and wine are local gourmet produce and a handmade range of unique body care products.

WORDS Ryan Burgess

Yes, you could spend hours in their cellar door, especially with a share platter on the insanely comfortable chesterfields by the fireplace in winter. We did and it was epic. But the real charm lies outside, on the marvellously manicured lawns adjacent to the olive trees, sweeping down to the lake. The star of the show is their brand new barrel hall. With a capacity for up to 250 seated guests and overlooking those trees and the lake, it provides the dream wedding location. Stone steps lead from the hall, taking you beyond the separate dancefloor and seating area to the grassed area lakeside. It’s an all-in-one ceremony, canapés and reception wedding venue a mere 40 minutes from the CBD, with ultimate Mediterranean vibes. This year, Lloyd Brothers stepped up from a premium wine and olive company

DRINKS: SALENA ESTATE

“IT’S ITALIAN FOOD AND WINE MADE WITH LOVE — THE ULTIMATE WAY TO OPEN YOUR HEART TO SOMEONE.”

R

enowned for producing world-class wines from their picturesque estate in the heart of the Riverland, the Franchitto family is set to take it up a notch. They recently opened the doors to their new cellar door and restaurant on site — Cucina 837 — where good company, a delightful Italian meal and incredible vino all meet.

Buon appetito

Cucina 837 is a celebration of the family’s passion for delicious home-cooked Italian meals, with the extensive menu changing regularly to optimise local produce. “The Riverland is bursting with produce that tastes the best and cooks the best, so we entwine our heritage with the local region in dishes like our Italian calamari with orange and fennel salad,” namesake of the brand Salena says.

In the spirit of shared experiences, dishes are designed to enjoy with loved ones but are just as delicious eaten solo. With a variety of traditional house-made pasta dishes in rich sauces and Europeanstyle wines on offer, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you are on the Italian coast. “The menu is full of dishes we also cook at home, as we want to pass on a bit of our family to our guests through wine or food. It’s Italian food and wine made with love — the ultimate way to open your heart to someone. “Our most popular dishes are Bob’s Ragu (which is my grandparent’s recipe for 10hour slow-cooked beef ragu, named after my dad) and traditional potato pizza, just like you’d get on any street corner in Italy. Or more delicate options, like prawns on a bed of zucchini ribbons, and for the less adventurous, options like Scotch fillet.”

DRINKS: SALENA ESTATE

If you suffer from food envy like I do and stress out when deciding, the team at Cucina 837 make it easy with the Venizia, Roma or Amalfi Feed Me options. They can also cater to vegetarian and gluten-free needs upon request. Captained by Head Chef Vincenzo Gallo, who heralds from the Amalfi Coast, the modern kitchen is fully equipped for the masses, with room for 110 on a regular night and licenced for up to 350 for a stunning regional wedding or special event.

Buone vibrazioni

In true Franchitto-family style, Cucina 837 is a collaboration of ideas hashed out over a family dinner or two — owner Bob wanted a traditional design, whereas his wife, Sylvia, loves a modern feel, so they combined the two. With high ceilings and huge windows overlooking the grassed outdoor area, the restaurant makes the most of its surroundings. Carefully designed for all seasons, the outdoor dining area can be completely enclosed with blinds, and has fans and heaters to combat the elements. On weekends, the lawns are dotted with tables and umbrellas, and guests can enjoy a casual game of Finska or bocce, or even try their hand at giant Jenga.

In the restaurant and bar, there is a combination of stunning wooden tables (handmade in-house) with retro chairs, a rustic wall made from Kathmandu stones and a striking copper bar that is well stocked for a cheeky cocktail or two — along with Salena Estate wines, of course. But it’s the little details that really catch your eye, like the specks of blue and green glass scattered through the polished concrete floor. The glass is from wine bottles — an idea from Bob — and it’s touches like this that bring the character to this thoughtfully-designed space.

coast with one of our Limoncellos to round out their dining experience. It’s fresh, light and is our way of saying thank you for sharing your day at our place. It’s true Italian hospitality at its finest and the perfect combination of the Riverland and Italy, which sums up what Cucina 837 is all about.”

Il locale

As well as the full range of Salena Estate wines — from entry point through to premium, organic, conventional and alternative varieties like Italian, Spanish and French — you’ll be spoilt for choice, as the bar at Cucina 837 is also a fully-stocked celebration of other local businesses. Grab a refreshing gin from Twenty Third Street Distillery, a Woolshed Brewery ale or a St Agnes brandy. Choose from an enviable list of cocktails or add a little zing to your experience with the Franchitto’s homemade Limoncello. “Every guest is offered a little complementary slice of the southern Italian

DRINKS: BARRISTERS BLOCK

Roar of an inspiring mama The holy grail of mixing family fun and enjoying the finer things is not a myth. WORDS Em Worthington PHOTOS Richard Lyons

T

here’s a little haven of happiness nestled in Woodside, where you can indulge in exceptional wines and tasty treats and relax, knowing the kiddos are welcome, too. Barristers Block is a breath of fresh air — sitting under trees that overlook rows of vineyards, glass of wine (or bubbles) in hand, with maybe some dips or a stone-baked pizza. The vibe’s always buzzing at this laid-back, boutique Adelaide Hills cellar door, with live entertainment most weekends. Best of all, the kids are warmly welcomed to hit up the giant sandpit, say hello to the alpacas, deer, chickens or geese or play leisurely games on the lush lawns.

In December 2019, Barristers Block celebrated 10 years of this beautiful cellar door, so I had a cheeky vino with Jan Siemelink-Allen, the one-woman band behind the popular venue and wine label, and left feeling inspired by the power of the roar of a single mama.

A rocky start

At 63, Jan has faced some enormous hurdles in her time but has kept her family at the heart of every move. Originally from the Adelaide Hills and with farming genes running through her blood, Jan moved to the South East with her parents in her final year of school,

In the weeks after interviewing Jan, Barristers Block was greatly impacted by the Cudlee Creek bushfires in December 2019. Jan lost 100 percent of her Adelaide Hills vineyard and although flames came within 20 metres of the cellar door, it was fortunately saved. While the experience has been traumatic, Jan’s outlook has been true to form, saying, “We lost every vine on the property and it will take years to recover but we’re so conscious of those out there who are hurting and have lost even more. We will rally and help our neighbours. The best way to support Barristers Block and the fire-affected regions is to buy our wine, visit the regions and support South Australia.”

“I THINK THERE’S A POWER IN AUSTRALIAN WOMEN — WE’RE RESILIENT AND REFUSE TO GIVE UP.”

where she eventually met her husband. It wasn’t unusual for her two young sons to see her on a tractor or tending to animals on their farm, but the family was hit hard by the recession in the late 1980s and 1990s and her marriage broke down. She returned to Adelaide with James and Lachlan, then aged nine and 11. The cards were stacked against her, with banks not viewing a single mum as a good candidate for a loan. During this stressful time, Lachlan became seriously unwell and Jan feared losing him. “I was already set to work hard but the thought of losing Lachlan put everything in perspective and I knew I’d do anything to make sure my two

boys had every opportunity. I think there’s a power in Australian women — we’re resilient and refuse to give up,” she says. She shifted into wine sales for one of the top wine companies and invested in a joint venture that sadly, went sour, resulting in a lengthy, stressful and costly court case. Not one to take it lying down, Jan challenged the other parties and won.

A new adventure

When Jan’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, she knew she needed to be selfemployed to care for her. She began to position the property that she held in trust for her sons at Wrattonbully, on which she

A GOOD DROP

Jan’s passion is poured into every bottle. “Wine’s an agricultural product — it doesn’t just fall off a truck. It’s dictated by the seasons lining up, plus what I put in, so it’s getting that balance spot on. Get it right and it brings people together to share an experience. That, to me, is the art of living.” Her Wrattonbully vineyard produces award-winning Shiraz and Cabernet varieties, and the cool-climate Adelaide Hills vineyard is perfect for their Tempranillo, Sauvignon Blanc, Fiano, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Jan’s down-to-earth manner flows through to their wine tastings. “There’s nothing pretentious. If you’re interested, we’ll chat in layman’s terms.”

You won’t be disappointed by a visit at any time, but Barristers springs to life with numerous events throughout the year. Keep your eye on the calendar during Winter Reds, Crush Festival and public holidays, plus their Bubs and Bubbles events, which are a hit with big and little kids alike.

A LOVE STORY

The stunning property has two separate spaces that can cater for an intimate gathering of 50 guests or up to 150 (licensed) people. The garden and hay shed see some jaw-dropping weddings, but you won’t see a line-up of brides — one wedding per weekend is Jan’s rule of thumb. “We’ve got no interest in becoming a wedding factory — I want them to be relaxed and personal, perfectly tailored to you,” she says.

and her then-husband had planted Shiraz and Cabernet vines, and affectionately named the vineyard Barristers Block — a little cheeky nod to the legal battle. When her mother passed away from cancer in September 2006, Jan laid all her assets on the table and bought the Woodside property. She was determined to create a place that welcomed families, including single mums like herself. “It’s family service, nothing glitzy or glamorous… it’s casual, happy, fun! I’m so proud of our agricultural heritage, which will always be the heart of the cellar door. I love that I’ve brought my sons up here and now have grandchildren running around the property too.”

A lot of elbow grease

It’s truly a labour of love, with Jan regularly making the eight-hour roundtrip between

- 74

the Wrattonbully vineyard and the cellar door in Woodside. Plus, overseeing domestic sales, export, wholesale, retail... and you’ll see her on weekends at the cellar door, doing wine tastings or handing out pizzas. Her sons have her back, with James (a partner in his own accounting firm) doing Jan’s accounts and Lachlan joining the company after the recent bushfires. “It’s taken courage and hasn’t been easy. In fact, it’s been shit hard at times, but everyone has their ups and downs and I’ve had a lot of fun along the way. I’m so proud of what we’ve created. “We started out making pizza in a tiny oven and I’d hand deliver it to the table. Now, we have 22 staff and are booked out every weekend. I never expected the popularity, so have copped a bit of criticism here and there. At the end of the day, I’m a farmer turned vigneron and now I’m fronting up hospitality, so I’m always learning but I love that people embrace what we’re offering.”

The heart of it all

Although very much a story of one woman’s success, Jan openly credits her achievements to those around her. “What you can do as an individual is one thing but what you can do as a family is wonderful — that’s everything.” Although she barely has an hour to herself each week, Jan prioritises time with her boys, her grandchildren and extended family. She is an incredible example of one woman achieving against the odds and is a powerful advocate of supporting others to carve out their own success.

“The best thing about womanhood is being surrounded by other women — sisters, aunties, friends — who can back you. We learn from having a go and making mistakes, we get through by doing it together. “We could take a leaf out of the book of the French — they celebrate age, experience and wisdom as things of beauty. There’s so much beauty in a life of challenges and triumphs, a life well lived.” @barristersblockwines barristersblock.com.au

“OUR ORGANIC FARMING PRACTICES HAVE REALLY MADE A DIFFERENCE TO THE QUALITY OF OUR WINE — YOU CAN TASTE THE ORGANIC DIFFERENCE.”

F

amily owned and operated, the team at Pure Vision has nailed sustainable ways to make 100 percent certified organic, vegan-friendly wines with minimal sulphur. The secret of their success is keeping it in the family, with owner Ken Carypidis steering the ship with his three daughters, Jackie, Teresa and Natalie, by his side.

DEEP ROOTS FROM THE BEGINNING The Pure Vision story was cast in Greece, with the sisters’ great-grandfather planting vines that flourished, and showing his son, Terry, the ropes. Terry and his family survived enormous hardship before moving to Melbourne after WWII. Despite tough times, each generation has cherished having wine and a meal together as one of life’s simple rituals. “My grandparents would never have thought that a patch of land in Virginia, on

the Adelaide Plains, would one day begin our love affair with the wine industry. My dad and his brother, Chris, still grow grapes on the same soil to this day,” Jackie says. Pure Vision was born when, in 2005, Ken noticed a gap in the market for organic wine and branched out from viticulture to create the label. By 2009, he was growing only certified organic grapes on 140 acres of vines with Chris.

WHY ORGANIC?

When they started out, organic wine was relatively sparse. “We stood back to understand how many chemicals were being sprayed by growers and how much we inevitably consume. We get one life and celebrate it by what we put into our bodies, so we wanted to grow healthy organic fruit to make exceptional wine, and create a cleaner environment for future generations,” Jackie says.

DRINKS: PURE VISION WINES

“Our organic farming practices have really made a difference to the quality of our wine — you can taste the organic difference.” The soil at Pure Vision is free of synthetic chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers, and each varietal is grown in its purest form. The properties are certified organic by ACO and are regularly audited. The team also noticed emerging vegan wines and felt it made sense to join in. “So many ingredients traditionally are used as fining agents in the final preparation of wine — from gelatin made from boiling animal parts and egg white to isinglass, which is collagen derived from dried fish bladder... even non-vegans don’t want to drink that! Now, we use a veggie-based product that’s cleaner and the recipe tastes great.”

THE AFTERGLOW

Cleaner methods means no chemicals, and Pure Vision wines contain less sulphur than you’d find in a conventional bottle — great news for your noggin’, as sulphur is a big culprit when it comes to that day-after hazy feeling and pounding headache. “Some people react to sulphur in traditional wines and as we get older, our bodies can become more sensitive. It’s great to be able to enjoy a couple of glasses of quality wine and not feel the effects of it as much the next day.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR

The Pure Vision team includes Head Winemaker Joanne Irvine, who’s responsible for producing their award-winning wines. And while Ken’s still actively tending to the vineyard, Jackie and her sisters each bring their own skills to their innovative wine label. “We grew up surrounded by the industry but have all been off on adventures to develop our own skills and networks. We’ve come back together to work on this family legacy. It’s hard work, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.” And that Virginia property, where her parents still reside (and grandparents lived until recently), now has a fourth generation running around. “We’re lucky to raise our kids on the same land, especially now that it’s so much safer, being organic. Dad’s in the vineyard, Mum’s behind the scenes helping us all, and my sisters and I are at the helm of the business — it’s something my grandfather would have dreamed of but never expected to come true.” @purevisionorganicwines purevisionwines.com.au

QUICK GUIDE TO PURE VISION WINES

The Mediterranean climate of their estate is ideal for Pure Vision’s Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as delicious Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc. Try a drop of these and we guarantee you won’t turn back. 1. Nature’s Step (Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, preservative-free Shiraz) Dip your toe into the organic wine game with these top-quality, affordable, vegan-friendly wines. Crisp wines from this series pair well with fresh salads, vegetables, fish, cream-based pastas and even spicy Asian dishes. 2. Pure Vision Organics (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz) This stylish series showcases the region, with top-quality organic reds that are light enough to be enjoyed on their own or go nicely with your favourite white or redmeat dishes, and of course, hard cheeses. 3. Rock My World (Pinot Gris, Rosé, Shiraz Cabernet) Dedicated to all the fun-loving Adeladies seeking an organic wine that will rock their world. The Rosé is refreshing on its own or pair with light seafood dishes and creamy cheeses, such as camembert and brie, while the versatile Pinot Gris is perfectly paired with creamy sauces, roasted chicken and vegetables, and spicy curries. The Shiraz Cabernet is divine — big, lush and ripe, it’s just what you want with a good Aussie red wine. This wine is ideally paired with grilled or roasted red meats and hearty stews. These won’t disappoint at your next girls’ shindig... plus, they’re easy on the eye so are sure to impress.

ush green lawns, complete with geese wandering by the lake, welcome you on your path to the cellar door, restaurant and accommodation, with vineyards and winery to the left and lake on the right. There’s even a 200-year-old gum tree that stands proudly, a great symbol of the history and strength behind this familyowned-and-operated brand. The Serafino story began in 1964 when Steve (birth name, Serafino) Maglieri arrived in Australia from Italy as a teenager, planting his first vines four years later with his father, Giovanni. He founded Maglieri Wines, home of Lambrusco and worldwide-acclaimed Shiraz in McLaren Flat before moving to the current location in McLaren Vale, which was formerly the iconic McLarens On The Lake. It has been transformed over the years to include the on-site winery, cellar door, bottling line and warehouse, and the business as a whole has been rebranded as Serafino Wines McLaren Vale. Steve’s daughter Maria is now at the helm as CEO of this impressive destination, with another daughter, Diana, working in the business. The industry is in their blood.

“My earliest memories are putting caps on bottles, packing wine cartons and planting vines with Grandpa, and learning to drive on the farm,” Maria says. “It’s always been a heartfelt experience that’s part of our family’s history and we love sharing that with our guests and customers.” It’s a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, given you can eat casually, experience fine dining, taste premium wines, enjoy a getaway or celebrate a special occasion, all in one spectacular family-friendly spot in the heart of McLaren Vale, where the vines meet the sea. As longstanding stakeholders of the area, Maria says the beauty lies in strong relationships with the surrounding businesses, who actively promote one another. “We’re so proud, not only of what we’re doing here at Serafino, but also of the region as a whole,” she says. “We unite as a community and are passionate about connecting with people and giving them a McLaren Vale experience to remember, only 45 minutes south of Adelaide. We welcome you to enjoy our great wine, food and Italian hospitality.”

Delicious dining

Recently winning their second chef hat, Serafino’s restaurant is best described as ‘approachable fine dining’. Experience top service while feasting on delicious regional produce from a menu that specialises in degustation, exceptional á la carte, and wine pairing. On Sundays, a pianist sets an elegant scene for a truly special affair. For a more casual approach, hit up the cellar door — complete with an enormous undercover deck overlooking the lake and expansive lawns — where you can do a tasting flight, drink and eat at your leisure or book a more structured wine and food pairing inside.

ilkers, mailbags, cat flaps, noogies, mosquito bites, puppies, jugs, airbags, cream pies, melons, coconuts, boozies, boobs… whatever nickname you’ve given your honkers, there’s one thing for certain — we’ve all got them, or had them. But sadly, most of us don’t look after them like we should. Alexandra calls herself the French Big Boobs Expert and prides herself on women leaving her shop fitted with the right-sized bra for their breast shape. “Two women can both be 10Ds but have completely differently shaped breasts — I’m here to make sure they each get the right bra,” she says. According to several studies, 80 percent of women are walking around Adelaide wearing the wrong size bra. More disturbingly, ill-fitting bras can cause all sorts of health problems. “Headaches, back aches, shoulder pain, and more seriously, underwires that dig in on the breast tissue, can lead to more serious illnesses.” If your breasts look like they’ve seen better days, Alexandra can give them a

makeover. “The right-sized bra can make your waist look smaller, stop your straps from falling down your arm, and give you the lift and confidence you need.” Her love for hooters is real. “I’ve loved lingerie since I was 15, but having big boobs and a small waist, the only bras that would fit were for grannies. I wanted to create my own lingerie store and quickly found out that Aussie girls have much bigger boobs than us French girls. So, my partner and I moved to Adelaide and set up shop here in Adelaide Arcade.” I walked into her shop as a size 12C and came out a 6E. WTF?! I had no idea I was wearing the wrong size bra — chances are, you probably are, too. “I know there are so many Adeladies who need to be fitted by me, they just need to know I’m here.” I skipped out of Alexandra Lingerie with my 6E boozies and will never look back. You should, too. @alexandralingerie alexandra-lingerie.com.au

Her high-quality service and attention to detail is something she should be so proud of. At just 24, Hannah is years ahead of most women her age. “I wanted to be in hair and beauty since I was a little girl. I was lucky enough to have been taught by the

ealthy skin can make you feel comfortable, confident and relaxed, and who doesn’t want all of those things on their big day? Our skin goddess, Rose from Elixir Skin Fitness on The Parade, is set to make that part of your fairytale come true. As a dermal therapist, she does so much more than give you a facial and a lick of paint. Her holistic approach looks at how overall health and lifestyle affects your skin — one visit will have you prioritising your wellbeing. So, for all our brides-to-be, we ask Rose for the lowdown on what to consider before the big day.

Why get your skin in check?

I see brides for all sorts of reasons, but they all want to look and feel their best. Looking at the overall picture of health (particularly the gut) is the key to ensuring your body functions at its peak, and this really shows up in your skin.

So you don’t just concentrate on the face?

No, I look at any skin you want to treat. A lot of girls want to ensure there are no blackheads or breakouts on their back, neck or chest. I’ve treated women who felt self-conscious about scars on their

STYLE: ELIXIR SKIN FITNESS

What other tips can you give to our brides?

1. Sleep Getting at least eight hours is vital so you don’t look tired, you avoid dark circles and your whole body functions more effectively and can repair itself. 2. Exercise Getting fit and feeling healthy is important but too much of a good thing can be detrimental — exercise is no exception. I see girls on a mission to lose weight, but overexercising can be as bad as not doing any, so it’s important to give your body the rest it needs. 3. Eat well It’s vital to eat food that’s high in fibre and to eat regularly. Concentrate on a balanced diet to get the right nutrients, good-quality carbohydrates, lots of vegetables and good-quality fats and avoid processed food. Too much sugar or alcohol close to the day can bring on changes in the skin. I suggest staying away from inflammatory foods and, if you suffer from acne, it’s a good idea to stay away from dairy. Overall, the cleaner you eat, the better your skin will look. 4. Be conscious of change Some women want to start or come off contraception or other medication before their wedding. Be aware this can affect how your skin functions and cause breakouts or increase sensitivity. Of course, this is where I can work my magic and level it all out.

arms, chest, back... even chickenpox scars. Some treat stretchmarks to feel more confident on their honeymoon in a swimsuit. Whatever they want to achieve, I help them to feel confident.

Does it improve how your makeup looks?

Almost all brides have a professional makeup application for their wedding day — the skin is the canvas. Bridal treatment plans are designed to achieve the healthiest glowing complexion to enhance the look of the makeup and ensure it lasts all day. Our brides’ skin treatment plans are also designed for them to feel comfortable in their own naked skin on their honeymoon.

What sort of lead time do you need?

Ideally, I start working with brides at least six months before the big day. It can take that long to repair and treat any skin conditions so they are really healthy, glowing, and can feel great even without makeup.

How many treatments do brides typically need?

I tailor programs specifically to every person’s issues and budget, so it’s different for everyone. Generally, I’ll see her roughly fortnightly while we repair and get the skin working in optimum condition. We’ll move to less frequent sessions and then, closer to the wedding, I make sure we’re not doing any treatments that may cause breakouts or need down-time. @elixirskinfitness elixirskinfitness.com.au

STYLE: STRAIGHT SMILE CENTRE

Confused between orthodontists and dentists when it comes to expert oral care? Dr Sarah Dan from the Straight Smile Centre explains... WORDS Hayley Pearson

Orthodontists and dentists seem to have a lot in common. How do I know which one to see?

It’s true — they both have a bachelor degree in dentistry, can advise about overall dental and gum health and can fit orthodontic appliances, such as braces and Invisalign aligners. However, an orthodontist is a specialist in orthodontics, meaning they can provide expert help in this area.

So, what are the differences between them?

Generally, a dentist coordinates your overall dental health — diagnosing and treating diseases of teeth and oral tissues, advising on general dental care and referring you to specialists, where required. An orthodontist specialises in diagnosing and treating teeth and jaw alignment issues, managing orthodontic and orthopaedic facial growth and providing orthodontic treatment options for adults and kids.

If some dentists provide orthodontic services, like fitting braces, why go the extra step of seeing an orthodontist?

Something I tell my patients is that braces are the appliance and the appliance is only as good as the person fitting it. Have you heard the theory it takes a person 10,000 hours to master a certain skill? Well, orthodontists not only study for an extra three years to become qualified, they then perform the same orthodontic treatments day in, day out. It’s the skills, understanding and experience of that person that will make the difference and achieve the outcome you’re after for your child.

- 86

10 SIGNS YOUR CHILD NEEDS AN ORTHODONTIC ASSESSMENT

Do I need to choose one over the other?

For best results, orthodontists and dentists work together, with each focusing on what they do best. A dentist is working with you to maintain general oral health and address issues that won’t be treated by an orthodontist. For example, you’d go to your dentist for your regular oral hygiene check and see an orthodontist to correct major bite issues. Ultimately, though, I believe there’s only one reason to choose an orthodontist — to create a smile that leads to confidence and feeling good about life.

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?

No, which makes it even easier for parents to visit an orthodontist directly for their child’s treatment. However, I encourage you to consult with your dentist for a recommendation, as it allows your dentist and orthodontist to work together and provide the best oral care for your child. @straightsmilecentre straightsmilecentre.com.au

Here’s Dr Sarah Dan’s checklist. 1. Early, late or irregular loss of baby teeth 2. Teeth do not meet properly when biting 3. Mouth breathing and/or snoring 4. Crowded, misplaced or blocked out teeth 5. Protruding front teeth 6. Biting or chewing difficulties 7. Lip biting 8. Speech impediments 9. Jaws that shift, protrude or are recessed 10. Thumb or finger sucking

hether your goal is relaxation, beauty or body recovery, we guarantee you won’t leave with a single stressed-out bone in your body.

Float your worries away

If you’ve never tried a float tank before, now is the time to do it. Floatation therapy is designed to bring you to a whole new

level of relaxation. The warm water is filled with a high concentration of epsom salts, which gives you the sensation of being weightless — even if you’ve had a few extra pastries lately. With the reduced light, sound and sense of gravity, the magnesium works to repair your muscles, while the combination of meditative surrounds and healing epsom salts will leave you feeling completely zen. If you’re anxious about your first time in a float tank, the Bliss team has two options available: one tank that remains open so you can ease into the process, and one where you can slide the lid closed if you wish, enclosing you into an egg-shaped capsule so you can completely switch off.

Give yourself some TLC

STYLE: RESIDENCE BUILDING GROUP

If you’ve ever built or renovated a home, I’ll bet there were some stressful, eye-twitching moments! WORDS James Worthington PHOTOS David Sievers

efore Hayley and I consider tackling a reno — and end up killing each other over opposing colour palettes — I need some professional advice. So, I sat down with our mate, Dave Menner from Residence Building Group, to ask how he minimises his clients’ stress levels while creating their dream homes. “Whether it’s a new-build or renovation, it’s a massive investment. Not just in terms of money, but time too,” Dave says. And that’s why every project is personal for him. “The longer you’re out of your home, the more stressful things can become for you and your family. But, it’s a necessary evil. I’d hate to be out of my home any longer than I had to.” It’s not just a matter of delivering exactly what his clients want, it’s the entire building process that will either make them look back fondly or make them fall into a quivering mess. Dave tries to get his clients involved to the point where it’s exciting, educational and an expression of their own creativity. “If something’s important to my clients, I try to find a way to make it happen. If my clients are butting heads, I talk them through the costs and practicalities. And if I can see a better way to do it, I hope they’re open to my ideas, too,” Dave says. “There’s no easy way to build, so together, we set realistic expectations for the project ahead, including timelines. Delays can happen when preferred

subcontractors, materials and products aren’t available, bad weather hits or even when we don’t see eye to eye.” Stand-offs can be costly, so he’ll walk them through the practicality and costs. Will it suit their home and how will it impact the way they live? When asked if his projects ever don’t go to plan, he replied, “Not often. It happens

“IF SOMETHING’S IMPORTANT TO MY CLIENTS, I TRY TO FIND A WAY TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.” to every builder at some stage — but that doesn’t mean it has to completely derail the job. As long as my client and my team work together to resolve the issue, we’ll stay on track”. He feels extremely privileged to have delivered over 50 amazing building projects for his clients, creating exactly what they were after. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t some small challenges along the way. If you add another 300 carpentry jobs, that’s over 350 projects where he has learnt something new from his clients. “At handover, I take time to assess the interpersonal lessons in that project. Then, I apply these learnings to the next one.” Dave knows that you have saved hard for this day and living out of suitcases or bunking in with friends or relatives isn’t always easy. Once you’ve gone through the wringer organising loans, your world could potentially get turned inside out for nine to 12 months and a good builder should play a big part in managing that stress. A builder should almost become part of the family. They get to know you, your kids and even your pets. He knows how important it is to minimise the disruption in their little lives, too. He takes a holistic approach to his work, where the journey is just as important as the destination. “I haven’t mastered it yet, but it’s something I’m working on,” he says. His day starts around 4am at the office, with meditation and clean eating. Then, before any of his staff arrive, he visualises the day ahead. “There are high levels of emotion tied into every project, so without this time to recharge and prepare for my day, I wouldn’t

be able to give each client the attention and energy they deserve,” he says. “Although my days are very rewarding, at night, I love to make time for my own family.” For a lot of people, walking into a noisy house full of boys might seem like an unlikely place to recharge. But as Dave puts it, “It’s bliss and the perfect reality check about what’s most important in life”. @residencebuilding_ residencebuilding.com.au

STYLE: ULTIMATE WATERBEDS

NATURAL WAY FOR BETTER SLEEP

A D E L A D Y M A G A Z I N E \ I SS U E 3

Waterbeds are a natural alternative that can give you a better night’s sleep. They remove pressure from the spine, which can help you fall asleep more easily as well as reduce disturbances during the night.

Waterbed myths debunked WORDS James Worthington PHOTOS Wayne Pearson

STYLE: ULTIMATE WATERBEDS

Waterbeds were huge in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Your parents might’ve even been early adopters and the envy of all of their friends – assuming they’d be getting endless amounts of sleep and …um …ahem.

A

ll of a sudden, waterbeds disappeared. Where did they all go? Some people say they were difficult to get in and out of, or prone to bedroom floods. But waterbed designs have come a long way since Hugh Hefner made them popular over 30 years ago. Since having kids, I’ve become a light sleeper and prone to the kind of body creaks that will keep someone in their 40s up at night. My twisted positioning always ends in pins and needles or a completely dead arm, and me wide awake. So, I started looking into waterbeds to see if they could solve my nocturnal problems. I went one step further, driving to Ultimate Waterbeds with my family to talk to owner Philipp Recknagel about modern designs and how they could help an old bloke like me. Here’s how they tick the boxes. I couldn’t see the waterbed section. Turns out I was already standing in it. They look exactly like those really comfy beds in all the traditional bedding stores. ✓ Ultimate Waterbeds upholsters beautiful headboards in-store, but if you already have one, your waterbed will fit those dimensions, too. ✓ I noticed a brightly-coloured area filled with kids’ beds. Surely, they can’t be waterbeds? They are. Philipp says kids often test a bed by jumping on it — his waterbeds won’t burst. A lot of his customers love their modern waterbeds so much, they put their kids in one from the time they transition out of the cot.

He says waterbeds are also great for people with sensory issues and those prone to dust-mite allergies. I’ve got some niggling back issues and was still a bit skeptical, so I tried some out. They are very easy to get onto and I was blown away by the lack of movement. ✓ ✓ It’s just like a traditional innerspring mattress, except without obvious pressure points cutting off circulation at my shoulders, back or hips. I felt very comfortable, but would Hayley wake up if she was asleep next to me? She jumped on beside me and I barely noticed her. ✓ This would work a treat trying to go to sleep after an argument! As a fail-safe, they offer a twin system, where you’re on an individual waterbed within the same mattress. Choose from very soft right through to very firm. And you can adjust your water temperature to suit — cooler in summer and warmer in winter. I’m the perfect candidate, because my internal thermostat is broken and I run hot all the time — it’s like I reached menopause when I hit 40! With excessive body heat comes lots of sweat at night. Fortunately, Ultimate Waterbeds’ 100-per-cent Australian pure-wool cover is machine washable and breathes better than cotton. ✓ @ultimate.waterbeds ultimatewaterbeds.com.au

WATERBED MYTHS DEBUNKED X Waterbeds will burst and flood your house In the unlikely event of a pinhole through lack of care, water is contained to the lined frame and very easy to repair. X Waterbeds are expensive to run The thermostat idles after reaching your preferred temperature. The foam frame retains the heat and delays the need to kick in again. A king/queen would cost about $15 per quarter — that’s less than a takeaway coffee each month. X Waterbeds are hard to get into Ultimate Waterbeds are made with a memory-foam frame, making them easy to get into and out of. Nothing like the old wooden frames where you’d fall into bed and have to call emergency services to get you back out. X Waterbeds are bad for your back This is the main thing I was looking for and, hand on heart, I had no pressure points or awkward positions. Don’t believe me? Ultimate Waterbeds offers a 60-night sleep satisfaction moneyback guarantee. And they’re not just great for people with back injuries — modern waterbeds work with the body, making them great for pregnancy, sportspeople and tradespeople who do a lot of bending every day. X Waterbeds make you seasick You choose the firmness of your modern waterbed. Once you settle into bed, so will any movement. X Waterbeds cost more An Australian-made waterbed mattress is comparable to any other top-quality innerspring mattress. If you follow the care instructions, it should outlast everything else. They don’t absorb body oils and dirt, so complete replacement is unnecessary. Replacement bladders only cost a couple of hundred dollars, instead of a new mattress that goes well into the thousands.

Inset: Waterbeds provide correct spinal alignment with no pressure points.

ith the belief that recycling shouldn’t stop with cardboard, the team behind Prelove has introduced a new approach to shopping. The second you stroll through the grand doors of the historical Hove Town Hall into the spacious Prelove store, you’ll see the hidden gems on the timber racks. Embracing the phrase ‘one person’s trash is another person’s treasure’, this innovative

business has taken secondhand clothing to a whole new level, giving it a boutique feel with gasp-worthy low prices. After spending some time in his wife’s home country of Finland, owner James found himself impressed by the way the locals approached secondhand clothing — providing customers with great fashion at low prices, while also allowing sellers to make back some of the money they spent on the clothes. Fast forward seven years and James is thrilled to finally introduce Prelove to SA. “The fun part is, you never know what you’re going to find,” James says. And if you’re renting a stall, it’s a great way to recycle your unwanted clothes and make some money in the process. Erase any preconceived ideas you have of secondhand clothing because the items at Prelove are a whole new calibre. Carefully checked before sale, the rotation of sellers means the store is constantly refilled with different styles and designer items that would usually cost a bomb. “Some of the designer stuff that you can walk away with is amazing. We’re constantly surprised by the pieces that come through our doors.” @prelove.adelaide prelove.com.au

- 92

SO, HOW DOES IT WORK?

For sellers, there are three options to choose from, allowing you to be as involved in your clothing sale as you wish. Whether you want to take care of the barcoding, pricing and descriptions yourself, you’d rather drop off your items and let Prelove take care of it all for you, or you’ve got smaller high-value items that need to be kept in secure casing, Prelove has it covered. Depending on how much you’ve got to sell, you can also hire racks of different sizes, starting from $80 per week (open Wednesday to Sunday). To book, give them a call or simply visit their store.

“THE FUN PART IS, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO FIND.”

If you’re like flocks of other families around Australia, then you know the daily struggle that comes with brushing your kids hair, or even your own! Every morning, we all go to battle against our long, short, curly, straight, thin, thick, tangled bed hair; or we face the tears, tantrums and time-loss that come with brushing our kids hair. This is where Ugly Swan Scream-Free Brushes help you win the war on hair. Ugly Swan Scream-Free Brushes gently detangle hair on even the most sensitive scalps. Designed by three mums from Adelaide, Ugly Swan Scream-Free Brushes are made with natural boar bristles that ease your natural scalp oils down to condition your hair while soft, large-dipped nylon pins detangle without scratching or pulling on the scalp.

“One of my daughters has thick, curly hair and a sensitive scalp. We never have found a brush that brushes all the way through and doesn’t tangle or hurt until now! I couldn’t recommend these brushes highly enough!”

Scream-Free Brushes also stay gentle longer and the large-dipped nylon pins act as a wear indicator to let you know when it’s time for replacement by gradually wearing down. This means you’ll always know you’re getting the most scream-free experience possible, whilst also keeping things hygienic. Ugly Swan Scream-Free Brushes come in two sizes: The bigger, stronger Maxi and the ultra-soft Palm Flexi. Both are suited to all hair types with the Maxi being particularly good for thicker, longer hair while the Palm Flexi is best for small children, finer hair and those with sensory issues. The nimble Palm Flexi is also perfect for adding those finishing touches to your style or to get the perfect ponytail or bun after the Maxi has done the heavy lifting. The Palm Flexi is also a dancer’s best friend, by being the gentlest way to brush our hair spray. The best part? Ugly Swan Scream-Free Brushes work on wet or dry hair. While regular brushes tend to cause breakage of wet hair, both the Maxi and Palm Flexi are so gentle by design, you don’t need to worry about damage or breakage and can just get on with your routine.

For those washing their hair more regularly, Ugly Swan also have the perfect companion product in their Unicorn Hair Towels. With their bespoke Cygnet-Soft Technology, Unicorn Hair Towels are ultra-soft to touch, yet absorb seven times their weight in water and dry hair up to five times faster than cotton. That’s about one litre of water absorption in around seven minutes! This means you can cut blow-drying time in half, with no friction damage and less frizz. The lightweight but generously sized Unicorn Hair towels are super simple to use on the longest, thickest hair but also fit young children thanks to their unique over-head design and easy twist-andloop closure. The more you twist, the tighter it gets!

“The Unicorn Hair Towel is a godsend. It gets most of the water out within minutes.” Facebook Review, SA Until May 30, Adelady readers are able to save a further $5 by shopping online with Ugly Swan, and using the promo code ADELADY5 at the checkout.
