More than a day trip
TRAVEL: FLEURIEU COAST
WORDS Hayley Pearson The fun begins forty minutes south of Adelaide.
F
rom the vines to the sea, the Fleurieu Coast is SA’s adventure playground. With charming towns like Willunga, Normanville, Goolwa, Yankalilla and the world-famous wine region McLaren Vale, the Fleurieu offers some of South Australia's best scenic and culinary experiences.
Gin tasting with a twist
Wine and toastie heaven
Some of the best gin is made on the Fleurieu and Settlers Spirits sets the bar high. “We used to make gin just for ourselves, but it was too good not to share, so we built a distillery and cellar door in the heart of McLaren Vale,” says owner Rowland. They mix and match all the botanicals themselves, and paired with a local grazing platter and some sensational views, life doesn’t get better!
Wharf Barrel Shed is located on the banks of Goolwa and has views of Hindmarsh Island. The old shed has been repurposed as a tasting room where people can come and try their locallymade 90 Mile Wines range, as well as other local drops. And you cannot visit without trying their famous toasties!
Horseriding in Normanville
See Normanville the best way — on horseback! Karen O’Leary and her team at High Country Trails lead daily tours from their stables in Normanville, over the gorgeous dunes and onto the sand for one hell of an adventure.
Multi award-winning seafood restaurant
Paddock to plate
Boasting incredible views of Myponga Beach, Lessismore Farm is a family-owned paddock to plate experience. You can make damper and butter from scratch; feed gorgeous pigs, Spot and Ginger; and hold their cute-as-abutton lambs. To top it all off, you can enjoy a locally sourced grazing platter and gorgeous views.

TRAVEL: ADELAIDE CITY CARAVANS
2021’s coolest travel trend! WORDS Hayley Pearson With millions jumping on the #vanlife handle, caravanning is now a young person's game!
A
fter a surprise global pandemic, travellers of all ages are saying see ya to overseas holidays, and instead seeking out family getaways in their own backyard. This means that great SA businesses, like Adelaide City Caravans, have never been busier. Headed up by local legend and caravan enthusiast of over 25 years, Michael Steindorf, Adelaide City Caravans is the best in the biz. “I’m so proud to offer a
massive range of unique off-road, on-road, semi-off road and family caravans. All with features that make them tough, luxurious, and stand head and shoulders above other brands,” says Michael. Michael loves nothing more than caravanning around Australia with his beautiful wife Belinda and their three kids. His passion has extended into designing his own range of caravans made right here in Australia — Kakadu Caravans and boy-oh-boy, are they amazing! “They’re purpose-built to suit the harsh Australian terrain and they’ll take you anywhere and everywhere you want to go, in style,” smiles Michael. And if you're like me — a hotel girl, not a camper — then a Kakadu Caravan will be right up your alley. These babies are luxury on four wheels — just step inside and you can’t help but imagine yourself kicking back and relaxing in full holiday mode with a cheeseboard, wine and a barbecue sizzling in the background. Depending on how luxe you want to go, Kakadu Caravans feature hot showers, queen beds with lift-up storage, double glazed windows, ensuites, air con, heating, microwave, TV, leather upholstery, RV Wi-Fi, and full kitchen and laundry facilities. So, move over fancy overseas holidays — caravanning around our amazing state is the new family dream. “After a tumultuous 12 months, many families are opting to take the kids out of

Families tend to fall in love with the Kakadu Spirit Black Series, Kakadu Mulga or the Wanderer Xtreme.” And here’s a tip — if you travel during school holidays, your kids will find a crew of similar aged kids. They’ll spend hours riding bikes, playing cricket and footy, and making lasting memories with their new friends. Whether you’re after a pre-loved van or a brand new fancy Kakadu Caravan, pop in and meet our mate Michael at Adelaide City Caravans. Michael knows everything there is to know about finding the right van for your family... and he may also inspire you to live your best life and go on that adventure you’ve always dreamed of. @kakaducaravans @adelaidecitycaravans adelaidecitycaravans.com.au

you can mirror your iPhone (or Android) to your screen and view your speed and map in your front window — so you never have to take your eyes off the road. With plenty of boot space, there’s room to pack your family in the car, hook on the caravan and experience one of life’s joys – free camping. We took our X5 and X7 to the Riverland and it was sensational!
FREE CAMP: LOVEDAY 4X4 ADVENTURE PARK
Set on 80,000 acres of private property, Loveday is like a big kid’s playground with adventure waiting for you around every corner. You can get wet and wild with a jet ski tour on the Murray, taking in all the wildlife along the way. They’ll deck you out with a jet ski and a life jacket, so all you need is an extra pair of undies, LOL. Fast car enthusiasts may prefer to get dirty on the track with a hot lap. Their turbo buggies fly over jumps and can hit speeds of up to 110 kilometres an hour.
POWERED SITE: BIG 4 RENMARK RIVERFRONT HOLIDAY PARK
Located right on the Murray River in the heart of the Riverland, this holiday park has everything you need to make lasting memories for kids, parents and golden oldies. Apart from the river on your doorstep, there’s a water park, a skate park, a games room and powered sites — and it’s all surrounded by stunning riverland views. @adelaidebmwofficial
HOT TIP: WOOLSHED BREWERY
Unhook your caravan and you’re free to explore the region. You can’t visit the Riverland without trying the famous awardwinning Hard Lemonades at Wilkadene’s Woolshed Brewery. If the travel ban has you down, sneak a visit to Villa Hampton who are always stocked to the rafters with beautiful beachy homewares — you won’t know where to start!
Acting like a magnet, Feed draws people in with its neverwavering, always delicious, modern Australian food. TRAVEL: DUDLEY WINES
WORDS Hayley Pearson Like a fine wine, Kangaroo Island gets better with age.
E
stablished in 1997, family-owned Dudley Wines is the island’s pioneer winery. Located just 12 kilometres from the Penneshaw ferry, it should always be your first stop once you arrive. If you haven’t yet experienced the joy of Dudley Wines, this should give you some serious FOMO.
THE WINE
With spectacular views of The Backstairs Passage across to mainland Australia, the cellar door is in prime position for sips and giggles. You’ll find 14 unique wines in their portfolio, all reflecting the personality of the region, and all grown and produced on Kangaroo Island. With wines including The Stud Shiraz, Shearing Shed Red, Thirteen Sparkling Red, and Porky Flat Shiraz, you know you're in for a good drop! “You can also do a wine tasting with one of our paddles while soaking in the view; five wines are served on a barrel stave, accompanied by tasting notes so you can enjoy at your leisure,” says owner Jeff.
THE FUN
THE MENU
Naturally, food goes well with great wine and Dudley’s serve up scrumptious pizzas and tasty platters full of regional produce, perfect for sharing. On weekends and holidays they offer a ‘Clifftop Lunch Experience’ where you can enjoy a glass of bubbly alongside your dishes.
THE BIG DAY
Your perfect island wedding awaits with Dudley Wines to match on the clifftop of this stunning north coast location. It’s a wedding planner’s dream, with a large event space which can seat up to 180 guests and, of course, multiple backdrops for an outdoor ceremony.
Kids are welcome! They have a playground and lawn area for littlies to run wild, plus a one hole, one par golf course for golf enthusiasts to tee off across the valley.
THE FASHION
To our delight, Dudley Wines also has a mini shop inside their cellar door. “We’re so proud to stock a beautiful range of wool and natural fibre clothing and accessories made from possum, alpaca, cashmere, bamboo, cotton and silk.” With cosy jumpers, scarves, beanies, and even light summer dresses, it’s no wonder we didn’t want to leave.

Bellies full of love and bags full of beautiful objects — welcome to our very own utopia, on Unley Road.
O
n the doorstep of the Adelady office, is our idea of heaven — Pickle in the Middle and Etienne. Right alongside each other, they’re your destination for a food and shopping combo that will leave you on cloud nine.
GET PICKLED
Any day of the week you’ll find us at Pickle in the Middle grabbing a coffee, a gingerbread caramel latte, or a bite to eat. Over the last four years, the sweetestdarned-couple you’ve ever met, Luke and Carli, have been feeding the masses and it’s no surprise people come back to get ‘pickled’, again and again. “When you come for a coffee or meal, we want you to focus on spending time with friends and family, or just to relax by yourself and let us take care of the rest,” says Luke. “We’ll fill your tummies with good quality, locally sourced ingredients, all freshly made in-house by our team — from main meals
right down to the sauces and dressings, with the exception of our sourdough because we go through so much!” Eyes on sustainability, the Pickle team focuses on minimal waste and offers unique options like their Shrubs (an oldstyle fruit soda with apple cider vinegar). They’ll pickle anything in sight to intensify the flavours, including turnips, radishes and even watermelon. The cakes are delicious, the brownies are a staple birthday treat in our office; and the fresh juices, packed with turmeric, ginger and beetroot help us beat that mid-afternoon slump. The whole menu is bursting with colours and flavours that make our day, and our dietary needs are looked after. “Most of our menu is gluten-free, as we know a lot of people have an intolerance,” says Luke. “We’re really careful about what’s in our food, as we know your body responds to everything you put in it. Most of our dishes have a vegan base and you can add things on, like chicken or cheese, if you want.”
And when we’re after a tasty lunch that won’t weigh us down, Pickle’s bowls rule. The Salmon Poke bowl, the Satay or the Breakfast Greens are our top picks, and the generous portions won’t leave you looking for snacks. Or a Grazing Plate is perfect for our group lunches. There is plenty to grab and go, including fresh jams, sauerkraut, relish, coconut yoghurt, gluten-free seeded bread, and more. And the team will teach you the tricks of the trade with their monthly pickling course where you can use around 30 different spices and taste every delicious step of the way! @pickleinthemiddle_ pickleinthemiddle.com.au

GET INSPIRED
Top off a delicious stop at Pickle with a spot of shopping next door at Etienne. For the past 11 years, lovely local Juliet Berry has lined the shelves of this light-filled store with things that will spark joy and most definitely inspire. "Etienne is a world of beautiful objects — for your home, for you, for someone special, or just because,” says Juliet. It’s an eclectic collection of homewares, women’s and men’s fashion from Assembly Label, Aesop skincare and a gold mine for thoughtful gifts. Everything resonates with our Australian lifestyle and is something a bit different to what you’ll find elsewhere. One of the most captivating things about Etienne is that it constantly evolves
with the new collections that come regularly. We’re always rubbernecking at the one-off pieces of furniture that grace the eye-catching windows before being snapped up by some lucky duck. We gawk at statement pieces from Dinosaur Designs, and fantasise about decking out our homes with colourful glassware from Maison Balzac. You can sink into a soft palette of bedlinen from Carlotta & Gee, adding gorgeous cushions to create interest in your home. Choose beautiful pieces of jewellery from Australian designers, including Kirstin Ash, Lucy Folk, Palas and more. Then, take time out at home to read inspiring books on cooking, wellbeing, architecture and gardening. The children’s range has lots of quirky toys and picture books, as well as baby blankets and the new al.ive baby range of skincare.
Juliet loves to showcase local artworks and ceramics, which speaks volumes of her passion for all that Etienne stands for, and her enthusiasm is contagious. “Inspiration comes in all forms — beautiful objects, a conversation, a different experience,” Juliet says. I
f you shudder at the idea of pretending to know what you’re doing in a gym, you need to check out this training group. A collaboration between Michael Viscariello, Clarence Liu and Marco Pagliarulo, this kick-ass gang welcomes you with open arms for 45 minutes that will get your blood pumping and the endorphins buzzing! Forget worrying about whether you’re fit enough or look the part, because this team specialises in group training and helping every member soar. Juggling work, two little ones, and not a heck of a lot of time to work on my fitness, I want real results in a short amount of time, so I joined the HITT crew to see what all the fuss was about. Here’s what I uncovered…
No I in team
There were no ‘first day of school’ nerves for me, no-siree! I exhaled when I rocked up to the Glynde warehouse to see different ages, abilities and a whole bunch of smiling faces. They run crack-of-dawn classes for all the early birds who want to start their day with a zing, and afternoon sessions to blow off the steam from a busy day.
They got you, boo
There are always a couple of trainers on hand to run the class and to help you through the moves so you can concentrate on your technique. I was lucky enough to have the little energizer bunny, Signe, by my side to keep me motivated, make sure I didn’t pull a hammy or knock myself out on the rowing machine… oh, and to remind me to breathe!
Sir Mix-a-Lot
No class is ever the same! Find your groove with circuit training, strength, Olympic-bar training, boxing classes and Tabata — the trainers all put their own spin on each class and push you in different ways, so you won’t get bored or lose focus.
Fast as lightning
When you break up sessions into little bitesized chunks around a circuit, time flies! All you need to do is turn up, be ready to move and let the trainers guide you through the most energising 45 minutes of your day.
GET YOUR BLOOD PUMPING AND THE ENDORPHINS BUZZING!
To infinity and beyond
Apart from dynamic training that will have you feeling energised, the HITT team offers super-motivating eightweek challenges, which include a training plan and dietary requirements to get you on the road to rapid change. It’s an education in what works for you and YOUR body — and it gets results! Check the website for their next blitz. Plus, they tailor it to your lifestyle, habits, commitments and what you like, so it’s sustainable long after the challenge finishes. Boom! @highintensityteamtraining highintensityteamtraining.com.au

FEEL GOOD: RSPCA OP SHOPS
WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Supporting animals in need will never go out of style.
W
e’re big fans of our furry friends and couldn’t imagine a world without them. That’s why our ears prick up whenever we hear that the RSPCA SA is up to something new — because we just know they’ve got our pawsome pals covered. In South Australia, the RSPCA rescues more than 8,000 neglected and unwanted animals each year, helping them to find a new home. But to do this, they need our support. The RSPCA Op Shop initiative started back in 1976 and has found their feet in recent years, expanding to nine stores. Since the two megastores opened, RSPCA South Australia has saved over 200,000,000 items from entering landfill while generating much needed funds for the organisation and its causes.
Not only do the op shops support sustainable fashion, they’re run by over 300 loyal volunteers, with 100 percent of the profits going straight back into the cause. There are gems to find in all stores, but if you’re looking for plenty of options to choose from, head to one of their megastores in Sefton Park or Kidman Park. “Our megastores have a huge range of clothing, homewares and accessories while still maintaining that boutique feel,” says Op Shop Operations Manager Meg Gill.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Are you holding on to things that you probably don’t need anymore? Could your wardrobe use a little more free space? The beauty of donating to the RSPCA Op Shops is that nothing is going to waste, and as the saying goes — what you might consider trash, could very well be someone else’s treasure. Balancing the body
FEEL GOOD: JAB ACUPUNCTURE
WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Dr Tracy Lee Govis, creator of Jab Acupuncture, is like The Force.
I
’m no Star Wars enthusiast, but there’s something inexplicable that happens when you have acupuncture with Tracy and her team. Everyone she meets instantly gravitates towards her healing energy — and they leave feeling extraordinary. Like a walking encyclopedia, Tracy is well-versed in Chinese medicine and her clients come from all over SA. “We treat things like menopause, infertility, muscle pains, chronic fatigue, endometriosis, period problems, migraines, MS, past trauma, grief and, most commonly, depression and anxiety.” For some women, acupuncture can help relieve stress and anxiety when trying to fall pregnant, but it may even help to increase fertility, which is music to many Adeladies’ ears! A trained massage therapist, Tracy had a sliding doors moment 10 years ago, which changed her life forever. “I was literally lost in China and not in a good headspace when a man tapped me on the shoulder, saw that I was upset and told me I was standing in the biggest university of

Chinese medicine. He offered to show me around and from that moment on, my world opened up. When I returned to Australia, I immediately enrolled to study my new found passion.” The holistic approach to balancing the body made perfect sense to Tracy. “We see the body as energy — like a river system with different pathways — and we need to make sure it flows. Wherever there's pain, there’s stagnation. If you've
experienced trauma and have knotted energy in your gut, you will feel unwell — that’s where acupuncture can treat you.” Opening up those pathways and seeing her clients gain a new zest for life is what drives Tracy. “People come to me feeling depleted, like they’ve hit rock bottom and often, acupuncture is a last resort. Helping them get their spark back is everything to me.” Located in Clarence Gardens, Jab Acupuncture feels inviting, nourishing, calm and is a place where you can be 100 percent yourself. “More and more men also feel comfortable coming to see me to help treat their depression, and they see results that they haven’t seen before.” There’s something about Tracy that makes her feel like an old friend and letting her hands take your mind and body into a meditative state is something else. The only explanation? She’s a Jedi. @jab_acupuncture jabacupuncture.com 23 -

FEEL GOOD: EASTERN CONVEYANCING
The secret to adulting WORDS Em Worthington Confession time… every Adelady team member has used a conveyancer but not one of us can tell you what they do. Thank goodness for people like Sue Andriani from Eastern Conveyancing, who can take the wheel and do the adulting for us!
B
uying a house, selling a home, land division, separation, divorce, deceased estates, business and other commercial transactions… all sorts of situations call for the expertise of a conveyancer and without one, you could be up the proverbial creek. You could end up getting a bad deal, conditions may not be met or your transfers could fall through. Not only can these moves have a hefty impact on your bank balance,
KNOWING YOU’VE GOT SOMEONE YOU TRUST ON YOUR SIDE CAN LEAVE YOU TO FOCUS ON THE GOOD STUFF.
they’re often emotional — knowing you’ve got someone you trust on your side can leave you to focus on the good stuff.
Behind the curtain
So, what’s a conveyancer? In simple terms, they’re across all the legal requirements of buying and selling property — they’ll do the hard yards with the banks; ensure that there will be clear title to the purchaser and that all rates and taxes are adjusted; check contracts and make sure conditions are met; as well as collecting capital gains tax and GST to pay to the ATO. If that sentence gives you a headache, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Sue’s got your back.
In the know
Sue has been helping everyday people through these big life moments for over 20 years and in 2016, she started up Eastern Conveyancing so she could do more of what she loves. Being proudly South Australian, Sue knows the market and loves working closely with her clients and their specific needs. “Every transaction and contract is different, and each person involved has different stressors or understanding of the laws around property transfers. That’s where we take the pressure off and ensure that all the boxes are ticked, conditions

are met and the process is as smooth as possible,” she says. Sue’s also well aware that these big life decisions need to happen around dayto-day life — work, kids, weekends and holidays — so she’s super flexible in being available when it suits you.
Hot tips
“The SA market is booming right now! 2020 has made people reassess what matters to them, so there’s a lot of movement. Houses don’t seem to be staying on the market, so if you’ve ever thought of buying or selling, it’s a great time to get involved,” Sue says. “First step: start looking around to see what’s on offer. Second (and a super important step): give me a call so I can make sure you’re ready to pounce and don’t miss out on making that dream come true!” @easternconveyancingptyltd easternconvey.com.au

Gabe and his team provide exemplary treatment in the light-filled practice on Goodwood Road, Clarence Park. Parking’s a breeze and you’re welcomed by smiling staff, all committed to helping with your health and wellbeing. So, how do you get your body rocking?
THE RIGHT ONE
As an avid sportsman who’s undergone a long list of hip and knee operations, Gabe knows what it’s like to tackle pain. More than a job, Gabe’s passion lies in helping people. “I have an empathic approach to pain. An injury or something that’s not working properly in your body can impact all aspects of day-to-day life. I know what it’s like to be the one lying on the table and I’ve had my fair share of good and bad treatment, so I’m committed to helping every client to feel better and move in the best way possible.” A musculoskeletal specialist, Gabe’s list of clients includes children right up to oldies. He can treat a niggling injury, chronic pain, provide post-surgery care, enhance sports performance, or support women’s health. “We treat lots of pregnant women and love helping them get back to the strongest version of themselves following birth,” Gabe says. Gabe’s affiliations with local sporting teams and fitness groups mean that his expertise is relied upon to maximise the movements of guys and girls within his community.
OUTSIDE THE BOX
And the team won’t just treat you on the clock. “We don’t stop caring when you walk out the door. We’re committed to following up after treatment and guiding you through what to do at home to assist with your recovery. We even use an app that is capable of exercise prescription with video content, pain level recognition and adherence tracking with inbuilt reminders to help get you on the right track,” he says. Gabe’s team is as passionate as he is! Ollie has joined the practice to work his magic helping Adelaideans battle chronic pain syndrome; Alex has a strong interest in Clinical Pilates and a background in KX; and with their dedicated practice staff, these guys are ready to get you mobile.

FAMILY: CAN:DO 4KIDS
Sure can do! WORDS Em Worthington PHOTOS Tom Roschi Parenting can be a tough gig! And if your little person faces additional challenges, it can be hard to know how to support them.
F
or 145 years, Can:Do 4Kids has been SA’s trusted helping hand for children who are blind, deaf, hard of hearing, have low vision or are facing sensory, independence or social challenges. We admire this team of local legends for changing the possibilities for next generations and ensuring their families have all the support they need to thrive.
Can who?
Originally Townsend House, Can:Do 4Kids has an abundance of experts on hand to help babies, right through to 26-yearolds. For some, it may be a goal to get dressed independently in the morning; for others it’s being able to enjoy a family meal, catching the bus, or starting in a mainstream school. Just as every one of
us is different, the goals for each child are relevant to their world and what will help them to feel fulfilled. Under sevens – For littlies under seven, the focus is on communication, play, physical development, social skills, and nailing the foundations of sleep, toileting and feeding. Seven and above – It’s all about assisting with social and life skills, communication, gross motor, attention and concentration, cognition, and supporting the transition to school, tertiary education and employment.
Can where?
From north to south, east to west, Can:Do 4Kids offers centre-based support and inhome services all over SA. A not-for-profit organisation, they provide opportunities for clients and their families to connect and engage with others who are sharing a similar journey, including pool parties, Christmas parties and other events throughout the year.
Can new
Can:Do 4Kids has just swung open the doors to a new centre in Noarlunga and there are learning experiences around every corner. With state-of-the-art technology, it
has been purpose-built for group programs and fostering connections. Amongst some of the incredible offerings is the Tech Hub — complete with a Lego room, robotics, virtual reality and digital gaming, all with modifications for additional needs. They also have a full independent living skills kitchen and laundry (all modified for wheelchairs), as well as a movement zone which has a rock-climbing wall, jungle gym and more.
Can how?
There are a number of ways to engage and connect with their services. You don’t need a referral — just call, email or let them know you’re interested via the website. FAMILY: MERCEDES COLLEGE
WORDS James Worthington Everyone has a path. Mine took me back to Mercedes College.
W
hen you graduate from school, there are infinite possibilities to find your place in the world. Sometimes, these things unexpectedly bring you back to where it all began. I started at Mercedes College in 1984 and according to my parents, it was an excellent school. It still is. That’s why we’ve decided to send our boys there from Year 7. It’s hard to appreciate a good school as a child or a teenager and I definitely took it for granted. But as parents, it’s something we tend to agonise over. We weigh up each child’s interests, how they respond to different learning environments, who their friends will be and how a school will suit their individual personalities. Are we overthinking it? No. School is an investment
in their future and as parents, we’ll always put pressure on ourselves to get it right. My 20-year reunion tour and an Orientation Walk a couple of years later, cemented our decision. It felt like we had found our school. Hayley didn’t attend Mercedes as a student, but she immediately felt a connection to it. While parking the car, the first person we saw was one of my teachers — Miss Spinelli. I was literally greeted with open arms! It showed Hayley the personal detail and level of care for each student well after graduating. What impressed me even more was seeing someone genuinely enjoying their work after 30 years. Her passion for the job is a testament to the school and the values ingrained along the way. This wasn’t a unique case. There are a handful of my teachers still working at Mercedes College. Even my first PE teacher — who instantly became a favourite — is still a critical part of the sporting curriculum’s success to this day.
Then, there are former students who have returned in professional capacities. One of my 1984 classmates, Kellie Osborn, enjoys her significant role as Head of Junior School. “Our learning environments are designed to stimulate and develop knowledgeable, caring and compassionate young people,” says Kellie. And it’s not just the teachers. It’s the administrators, consultants and professional support staff helping the school and its students to flourish. I think this says a lot about Mercedes. I have seen former students go on to become doctors, nurses, architects, politicians, business leaders, e-commerce success stories, famous entertainers, social justice experts and world-class athletes. I have no doubt that Mercedes College helped to provide the foundations for these well-rounded individuals, ready to take on the world! FAMILY: MY PRIVATE MIDWIFE
Meet our human Google! WORDS Ryan Burgess From the second we found out we were expecting our first child, the anxiety ramped up — and so did the Google searches.
FROM THE MOMENT YOU FIND OUT YOU’RE EXPECTING RIGHT THROUGH TO AFTER YOUR BUB HAS ARRIVED, I’M WITH YOU FOR THE JOURNEY.
G
oogling has slowed down since we met Kate Bergamasco from My Private Midwife. Now, our pregnancy-intrigue is directed at her and instead of links, we get warm, compassionate, targeted answers to help with our journey. Kate is a registered midwife with over 32 years of experience, as well as a lactation consultant and a hypnobirthing practitioner. We sat down with Kate and asked her some of our burning pregnancy questions.
What’s the benefit of using My Private Midwife?
From the moment you find out you’re expecting right through to after your bub has arrived, I’m with you for the journey.
As a private midwife, I can meet you anywhere and work with you to overcome your challenges and struggles. During pregnancy, I answer questions and alleviate your fears; and then after birth, I continue to support you, assisting with feeding and sleep as you learn as a parent. I have the added bonus of being a lactation consultant too, and can help you to trust your ability to feed. Breastfeeding can be difficult and confusing, and it’s normal for mums to feel overwhelmed. I specialise in painful attachment, a baby’s refusal to feed, or general discomfort with the feeding process — and I do it from your very own home.
What are the benefits of hypnobirthing?
Photo: Wayne Pearson.
I help to build your confidence in your ability to nurture your baby through pregnancy, birth and beyond. Hypnobirthing involves various techniques to help relax and empower the body before and during birth. It’s also extremely beneficial for expectant mothers who have C-sections.
With so much conflicting information available, what’s your advice for expecting or new parents?
When parents question how to respond to crying babies, I always say to forget about any fears of what might happen and just trust your instinct. If your partner was crying in bed, you’d respond with a cuddle and try to help them. Babies are born before they’re neurologically ready to be, and we need to let go of our fear of spoiling them and just respond instinctively and lovingly. Kate has helped countless families all over Adelaide reach their full parenting potential. Armed with various tips, tricks and tools to establish positive routines for you and your new baby, she’s a wealth of knowledge — and she’s all yours. @myprivatemidwife myprivatemidwife.com.au

FAMILY: WALFORD
Prime Minister Scott Morrison with Isobel Marshall. Photo: Salty Dingo.
WORDS Millie Looker There’s something about a Walford girl. She’s instantly recognisable by her independence, bravery and global awareness.
O
ne Walford success story is former student and Young Australian of the Year Isobel Marshall, who co-founded TABOO with her best friend and fellow school captain, Eloise Hall. They formed the idea while in Year 12 and they’ve been changing the world ever since. It started when Isobel and Eloise attended a conference as part of the Walford leadership program. “We learnt about social enterprise from the founder of Thankyou Water, and fell in love with the sustainable approach of connecting powerful markets with global causes that need funding,” says Isobel. From there, TABOO was born. It’s incredible to think that in Sierra Leone, girls miss around 50 school days a year due to their period; and in Kenya, 65 percent of women can’t afford sanitary products. TABOO’s organic cotton pads and tampons are more than just a healthy choice for your body, with profits used to help women across the world access safe menstrual products
and the education to use them, as Isobel explains. “We work with our charity partner OneGirl, share our Australian outreach and education programs, and create campaigns that challenge the stigma surrounding menstruation.” So, what’s next for this outstanding initiative? “We’re looking forward to a massive year! We’re aiming to reach a wider range of customers from Australia — the more products we sell, the more profit we can dedicate to our cause. We’ll also continue to empower young women to celebrate what their bodies can do, instead of feeling shame.” It helps that TABOO has started 2021 off with a win. Always thinking about the bigger picture, Isobel’s impressive Young Australian of the Year title provides an incredible platform to communicate and share TABOO’s mission with a national audience. “It’s a hugely exciting and encouraging opportunity for our entire team,” says Isobel.

Walford Principal Rebecca Clarke notes that the girls regularly return to the school and have inspired the students with their story. “They are remarkable and wonderful role models with the potential to be change agents at a global level by helping girls and young women to take charge of their own health and wellbeing.” Isobel and Eloise now also have their sights set on improving educational opportunities for girls around the world. “Walford taught us that our gender or age is no barrier. We left school confident of what we could offer, but honest about what we didn’t know and where we needed to grow,” smiles Isobel.
Isobel and Eloise are a reminder that the future is bright with young people instigating change. @walfordschool

owner. You’ll master skills and techniques in cutting, barbering, styling, colouring, chemical services, customer service, retailing and trichology. As TAFE SA’s Principal Lecturer of Hairdressing, Tina Dalwood is passionate about seeing students soar. “We want our students to have fulfilling careers, so apart from equipping them with the skills and qualifications, we help link them with potential employers and people in the industry.” TAFE SA Hair and Beauty has a mobile education salon, Priscilla, that visits Hutt Street to pamper and perform services for clients of the Hutt Street Centre, giving students invaluable life experience. Priscilla also travels regionally to cater for students across the state, including regions in the Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Clare Valley, Eyre Peninsula, Fleurieu Peninsula and even Kangaroo Island. “It’s incredible to see how much our students grow in their time with us. They could start at school and through exposure to a range of careers, begin their pathway to apprenticeship while at school. We have seen an increase of school-based apprenticeships whilst students are in Year 11 and 12, as it aligns with SACE requirements,” Tina says.
YOU BEAUTY!
Whether you’re keen to become a nail technician, beauty therapist or makeup artist, there’s a whole kit on offer. Learn from scratch, or upskill with courses that complement the award courses, plus, TAFE SA also offers some recognition of prior learning. TAFE SA’s Principal Lecturer of Beauty Grace Maiorano loves the huge variety. “There’s so much to choose from — including a Diploma of Screen and Media, where you
can specialise in makeup for television and theatre. You’ll even learn special effects and latex for creating wounds, and work with local theatre companies.” Not only are the courses artistic, Grace explains there is a huge focus on building exciting careers. “We set our students up for success! As well as specialising in advanced facials using machinery, and body and spa, the majority of students have gained employment from the middle of their course. “A career in beauty can be so satisfying, and once you’re empowered with knowledge and tricks of the trade, you can provide nurturing services and help clients to look and feel their best,” Grace says. And for those who just love being pampered, primped and preened, check out the in-salon offers where you can nab invigorating services for a fraction of the industry price. FAMILY: SCOTCH COLLEGE
Dance your heart out WORDS Millie Looker Scotch College has everyone grooving with the benefits of dance.
T
here’s something powerful about seeing tiny people with big dreams dance into school on day one, and then dance their way out again 12 years later, having grown and excelled in their passion.
The dance program at Scotch College is inclusive, with a dedicated curriculum and after-school program for young girls and boys to pursue the art of dance. This program has a long list of benefits for wellbeing, and has already uncovered a pool of talented young performers.
Girls groove, boys boogie
While history shows that primarily it’s the girls who get the dancing bug, the boys at Scotch College are joining the party too — resulting in an almost-even split of girls and boys. Including dance as part of the day-to-day curriculum softens the gender stereotypes and makes it super acceptable for everyone to be a part of it.

FAMILY: SCOTCH COLLEGE
Dance the days away
Beginning at the ELC level in the junior school’s brand new performing arts studio and continuing right through to SACE level, the dance program offers students the opportunity to enrol in dedicated dance subjects, as well as after school dance classes. “There are so many benefits that come from encouraging our students in dance — from improving their physical and emotional wellbeing, through to guiding and developing their skills as dancers, choreographers and avid audience members,” says Scotch College’s Head of Dance, Allison Patterson. Offering co-curricular dance on campus makes the program stronger, with the after hours classes designed to go hand-inhand with the day classes. Not only is it a blessing for parents to keep after-school activities in one place, but students also benefit from the same teachers running the program, which is taught by a large and diverse faculty. It’s a less intimidating way for students to pursue dance, and the classes are open to everyone regardless of their skill level. Students in Year 5 and onwards can choose their favourite genre from jazz, tap, hip hop, ballet and contemporary — and this selection will continue to grow over the next couple of years. And students who don’t have a passion for dance still reap the benefits, with spectacular performances for them to watch throughout the years.
“IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO FEEL SAD WHEN YOU’RE DANCING!”
Wellbeing comes first
Just like everything that Scotch College does, wellbeing is at the heart of the dance program. “It’s impossible to feel sad when you’re dancing!” laughs Nina, teacher of Performing Arts and Choreographer of the annual musical. Not only does dance promote physical health, it’s also a chance for students to express their emotions. During the tough transition period over COVID-19, teachers encouraged students to dance as
a form of stress release — and by the end, there wasn’t a single person who wasn’t laughing. Parents have also noticed the difference that dance can make in their children feeling a sense of belonging to something wonderful. Year 6 student Zee’s mum, Sarah says, “Zee has absolutely loved her
time with the dance crew! She says to me, ‘I feel so good when I dance’ — that to me, is everything. What wonderful mentors and role models for our younger ones”. @scotchcollege scotch.sa.edu.au

FAMILY: ST JOHN AMBULANCE SA
WORDS Ryan Burgess You’re probably reading this on a quick break in your uber-busy life, which means you’ve caught up on all the important stuff, right? Wrong.
Y
ou’ve likely forgotten something hugely important — something lifesaving. Most of us have, to be honest. I’m talking about a nationally accredited first aid course from St John Ambulance SA.
Photo: Wayne Pearson.
This not-for-profit organisation, which has been supporting the South Australian community for over 135 years, spoke to us about the importance of learning first aid. Their mission and their motto are clear: Saving lives through first aid. If you’re anything like me and feel overwhelmed in a crisis, we strongly recommend looking into their range of first aid courses. Lauren and I kicked off our first aid training with the Caring For Kids course. We were both clueless about first aid and, as there’s a little bun in Lauren’s oven, we want to do the right thing if ever required. It’s a short three-hour course that can be done anytime, even on a weekend. This course is one of the few that is nonaccredited, but actually gives you more flexibility to delve deeper into questions with your trainer during and after the course, which we had a ton of. Topics you’ll touch on include Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for children, recognition and treatment of choking and anaphylaxis, as well as general first aid care. You’ll also have the option to grab a Tiny Tots First Aid Kit. If you find you walk out the door and forget
everything you just learnt, the course also comes with a super handy reference manual. If there are no little ones running around, or they’ve fled the nest and can take care of their own cuts and bruises, there are plenty of other courses for you to enhance your first aid skills.
PROVIDE FIRST AID*
Available as a half-day with online learning, one-day, or two-day course, Provide First Aid is nationally recognised and accredited. They’ll run you through CPR, defibrillator use, management of a range of injuries, cuts, burns, allergies, fractures and common medical conditions. It’s the go-to course for workplace first aiders, providing a standard workplace qualification.

CPR COURSE*
It might sound obvious, but this course digs a little deeper than you think. Over three hours, you’ll learn techniques on correct CPR application, defibrillation and managing an unconscious casualty until ambulance help arrives. In addition to the above courses, St John Ambulance SA also offers a wide range of other first aid options, including Occupational First Aid*. Focussing on more high-risk occupations, like construction, mining and remote workplaces, St John Ambulance SA is so passionate about every South Australian learning first aid that they can even attend workplaces and remote locations to ensure adequate training. It’s a scary thought, but cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time — regardless of your age or health condition. Having first aid, CPR and defibrillator training is something that St John Ambulance SA believes everyone should have. A person who experiences a sudden cardiac arrest, with no treatment
has only a 10 percent chance of survival. Survival can reach as high as 70 percent when a defibrillator is used before paramedics arrive. On average, six cardiac arrests occur per day outside of a hospital in South Australia. First aid courses from St John Ambulance SA will arm you with the knowledge and confidence to assist in these circumstances, and the ability to potentially save a life.
ST JOHN AMBULANCE SA WANTS YOU TO KNOW
Firstly, the worst thing you can do is nothing. Secondly, any attempt at CPR is better than no attempt. They strongly urge you to not delay and to do a first aid course where you will learn valuable skills that may save the lives of your loved ones or others in need. @stjohnambulance_sa stjohnsa.com.au

IT’S A SCARY THOUGHT, BUT CARDIAC ARREST CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE, ANYWHERE AND AT ANY TIME — REGARDLESS OF YOUR AGE OR HEALTH CONDITION.

FAMILY: EYNESBURY SENIOR COLLEGE
REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE WORDS Em Worthington Some of us are sprinters, some are suited to long-distance, while others wouldn’t run if you paid them.
W
e’ve all got different skills, different ways of learning and thank goodness there are options so we can all bloom! As one of Adelaide’s oldest private senior secondary colleges for students in Years 10, 11 and 12, Eynesbury Senior College provides a unique style of learning, including flexible timetables and an individual approach.
With a range of programs and teachers who are specialists in their field, Eynesbury sets students up for success in the wider world and helps them make the transition from school to university, or other education pathways, so they can live their dreams. So, what makes Eynesbury Senior College so different?
Unlike many of the traditional private schools, Eynesbury doesn’t have a big campus that encompasses everything. Instead, they prefer to get the students out into the world, utilising their surroundings, including the Central Markets, the Art Gallery, cafs, the legal courts and all that’s on offer in beautiful Adelaide.
TEACHING INDEPENDENCE
From the start, it’s a different relationship for all the students who come to Eynesbury. There are no uniforms, no bells and no calling teachers by their surnames. The idea is that the students are treated

FLEXIBILITY
more like young adults; they’re on an equal platform with their teachers and they’re encouraged to be accountable for managing themselves and their timetables. Similar to a uni timetable, Eynesbury has two-hour lessons to focus on learning, and flexibility for students not to be on campus when they don’t have a lesson.
TARGETED LEARNING
Without having to worry about things like yard duty, the teachers at Eynesbury have more time to be available to their students. In fact, they make themselves available for 90 minutes for every subject that they teach each week so that students can book to see them for one-on-one time to troubleshoot any homework issues or problems. This means students aren’t missing key concepts or hitting a wall — instead, they can consolidate their learning and tackle it head on.
While Eynesbury offers a huge range of subjects, they can also facilitate specialist subjects, including music, a range of languages and VET courses at other campuses. The flexible timetable also makes it possible for students who may have other demanding extra-curricular activities — like football, netball, swimming and even Ninja Warriors — to still focus on study in conjunction with their training.
LIFE-LONG LEARNING GOOD VIBES
Eynesbury Senior College cares about the wellbeing of every single student. The dedicated wellbeing team meets regularly to ensure that the needs of students are being met, but best of all in our eyes, Eynesbury even has a wellbeing pup! Wirra is a two-year-old border collie belonging to Teacher and Pastoral Care Worker Belinda Sziller and he brings all the good vibes and a sense of calm when he visits the campus each week. School with a doggo? Sign us up!
Students have the choice of how they get involved in the community. For example, the Social Justice Group at Eynesbury gives students the chance to make a difference and broadens their thinking beyond our borders. Some of the incredible things they have done recently include fundraising to support Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya and their efforts in tackling the illegal wildlife trade and the fight against animal poaching; and fundraising to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for LGBTQI+ young people. @eynesburyseniorcollege esc.sa.edu.au
OPENING DOORS
For some of the students at Eynesbury, the opportunity to do Year 13 may give them the chance to pursue the career they have their heart set on. If they don’t achieve the ATAR required for a particular degree the first time round, they have the opportunity to do the year again, or even redo one or two subjects to boost them up to where they need to be. These are the kinds of opportunities that can completely change where their life can go!
THESE ARE THE KINDS OF OPPORTUNITIES THAT CAN COMPLETELY CHANGE WHERE THEIR LIFE CAN GO!

ou know you’re getting old when your favourite weekend activities include wandering the Spartan showrooms, browsing hundreds of appliances on offer. It’s easy to while away a couple of hours rebuilding your dream kitchen in your head, complete with a colourful SMEG fridge and a huge Westinghouse oven, of course. Over 50 years ago, founder Peter Tsoutouras started out by following ice block delivery drivers around and knocking on Adelaidians’ doors to sell them the newfangled fridge. Ask your parents or grandparents where they got their appliances back in the day… there's a good chance it was from Spartan! As Spartan grew, so did Peter’s family — and now his children Chris, Con and Athena, as well as her husband Andrew and his nephew Con G, all work in the family business, bringing a modern touch for kitchen enthusiasts to fall in love with.

You’ll still find Peter dishing out advice in the showrooms, too! Over the years, their range has grown to include all contemporary appliances, decking out South Australians with everything they need for their kitchens, laundries and outdoor areas. It doesn’t matter whether you need to replace a cooktop or build an entire kitchen, the customer service never waivers — you can expect a cup of coffee and a chat to make sure you’re walking out with the perfect appliance. Both the Campbelltown and Torrensville showrooms are immersive so you can really get a feel for how each different appliance works, from premium and exclusive brands like Siemens, Sub Zero and Wolf right through to the everyday brands like Westinghouse, Fisher & Paykel and Electrolux. The service never stops at Spartan — the delivery team is prompt and professional, and offers reliable delivery with rubbish removal (they’ll even take your old appliances away for you, as long as they’re unplugged). A locals are more than just familiar with Gaucho’s — we hail this iconic Argentinian eatery as one of the best spots for a steak in Adelaide. With brothers Tony and Joe Puntureri now at the helm, this family-owned business has gone from strength to strength since being named Australia’s pioneering Argentinian restaurant 30 years ago. With a passion for chargrilling high-quality cuts of meat, the brothers have trained their team on how to professionally age the meat right through to how to grill the perfect steak with a matched marinade and sauce. Their efforts have resulted in many awards and an unrivalled culinary experience. When COVID-19 hit, the Gaucho’s team had a surplus of aged beef on hand, which was at risk of being wasted until they had a stroke of genius — why not allow South Aussies to nail the top secret Gaucho’s steak recipe from their very own home? The Gaucho’s At Home Premium Aged Range, along with the Gaucho’s At Home 1647 Range, was born and has been devoured by Adelaidians ever since. You can now find their succulent T-bones, lean fillets, porterhouse, rib eye and Scotch fillet at Foodland.

What’s the perfect steak without its best friend — Gaucho’s At Home Chimichurri Sauce! SA business Spring Gully has come to the party, producing the traditional Gaucho’s family recipe for steak lovers to enjoy. Pick up a bottle at your local Foodland and use it as a marinade and a condiment — there’s no such thing as too much Chimichurri!
GAUCHO’S TOP TIPS TO COOK THE PERFECT STEAK
• Buy your quality cut of Gaucho’s At Home Premium Aged Range meat from Foodland.
• Get your steak to room temperature, then oil both sides and sprinkle with salt. Rub evenly over the meat, along with some Gaucho’s At Home Chimichurri if you wish. • Bring your barbecue or hot plate up to a high heat and then reduce the flame. Lightly oil your grill or hot plate with oil and place your steak on the grill — then do not touch it for 3–4 minutes (medium-rare). • Turn your steak over once, placing it the opposite way so the grill lines are opposite to the other side, and cook for 3–4 minutes. This keeps the heat consistent throughout the steak. • Remove from the heat and leave to rest for a few minutes before serving with Gaucho’s At Home Chimichurri. FOOD: BANANA BOOGIE BAKERY
WORDS Lauren De Cesare PHOTOS Wayne Pearson This may be difficult to write because there are delicious baked goods involved and we typically try to avoid drooling over our keyboards.
T
here’s too much to say when it comes to Banana Boogie Bakery, but if we had to break it down into two points, the first would be, vanilla slice; and the second would be, they’re expanding! The Banana Boogie story started long ago, before your favourite award-winning vanilla slices were a thing. Noticing a gap in the banana bread market, owners Kelly and Jason perfected their recipe and commenced trade at Brighton High School and the Marion Sunday Markets. The banana bread was a bonanza! Kelly and Jason soon found themselves buying Bruce’s Traditional Belair Bakery back in June 2015 and turning it into the Banana Boogie we know and love today.
VANILLA SLICE
The humble vanilla slice may be the reason you know about Banana Boogie. There’s a science as to why it’s such a crowd-pleasing favourite. You may be aware of their ‘loaded’ vanilla slice, too. Causing locals (and not-so-locals) to bang down the Banana barricades early on a Saturday morning in search of the choc mint, Mars, Twix, Cherry Ripe, Turkish Delight, Mint Slice or Toblerone loaded vanilla slices. The flavours change every Saturday! It’s a weekly exclusive and if you’re keen for one of these masterpieces, you’ll want to get in quick. It’s not rare for these creations to be MIA by about 9.30am.
The best way to discover what’s on offer is to keep a close eye on their Instagram.
THERE’S MORE TO THE STORY
Did you know there are over fifty freshly baked, mouth-watering sweets, treats and savoury pastries on offer? Kelly and Jason certainly got our tummies rumbling when they told us about their gold award-winning pies like the pepper steak, as well as the ever popular chicken and leek. We’re hungry just thinking about them.

THE NEW BANANA BOOGIE
Kelly and Jason aren’t afraid to experiment in the kitchen — just try their next-level chocolate, chorizo and venison pie to know how passionate these guys are about giving Adelaidians a total flavour overload. The evolution of the Banana Boogie baked goods is present on their salivating socials, as well as in-store surprise and delights that are not to be missed.
IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR
Banana Boogie lovers travel far and wide for their award-winning pastries and sweets. Our neighbours did a huge detour past Belair especially for Banana Boogie when they came over for breakfast one morning. Banana Boogie’s new and second location in North Plympton provides a hugely convenient spot for those bakerylovers in the south, west and CBD. The bakery is such an institution, we’re confident people will be stopping off for a dozen of their vanilla slices en-route to the airport to share with their interstate friends and family, or as the first pit stop when returning home. You can find the brand new Banana Boogie at 5/44-52 Hawson Avenue, North Plympton. @banana_boogie
With 24 years of baking experience, it’s a passion, a hobby, a career and a family experience for Kelly and Jason. Their 12-year-old daughter, Maggie, is often the star of the show on Instagram and is referred to as ‘The Boss’. Like her parents, Maggie has baking in her blood, growing up sleeping on bags of flour while her devoted parents worked tirelessly to create one of Adelaide’s most cherished bakeries. It’s paid off for the family, too. With a list of awards into the hundreds, our beloved Banana Boogie has a firm place in our regular cravings.

THE MENU
WORDS Em Worthington Happy b-day to one of our favourite watering holes, The Mile End Hotel!
T
his grand old lady is the toast of the town for reaching the ripe age of 180 and boy oh boy, she just gets better with age. In 1840, the doors were swung open to The Market Tavern which became The Butchers’ Arms before transforming into The Mile End. There are stories of burglaries, the death of a landlord, shooting matches, early celebrations of St Patrick’s Day and
even a rabbit named Joe who would regularly munch lettuce leaves on the bar. It’s a rich history and when the Saturno Group took over the pub 20 years ago, they took it from a grungy sports pub to an art-deco dream that draws on the 180-year heritage and is set for eating and drinking all year round. Pull up a pew, here’s why we love her so much…
Catch-ups are made easy with the vast selection of traditional pub fare and restaurant style meals available from 11.30am to 8.30pm every day, so you’re not battling to get orders in before the kitchen closes. Head Chef David White and his team are on a mission to bring you the best pub food in Adelaide, and they’re bang on target! You can grab a delicious local steak, Asian-inspired bowl, or an array of share plates to start. And vego and vegan friends are sorted with options galore. Local’s the name of the game, with the extensive wine list featuring local boutique wineries; and they’re riding the gin wave, showcasing local SA distilleries with a ‘build your own gin cocktail’ option if you feel like flexing a little creative flair. And beer lovers, rejoice! The Mile End is the perfect place to explore, with a solid list of craft beers and rotating taps, so there’s always something new to try from a local brewer; plus all frothies on tap are the same price, so it’s easy to go rounds with your mates.

FOOD: THE MILE END
THE VIBE
With history running through her halls, The Mile End was carefully renovated eight years ago to preserve the story but make her even more appealing. Thoughtful nods to the past include the replica original bar, colourful lead lighting, original bluestone walls, chandeliers, open fireplaces and the iconic moose head, as well as framed memorabilia, which all paint a colourful picture of years gone by. It’s the definition of character, with something to catch your eye in every room and around every corner. The walls are donned with whimsical creations from local artist Sandra Anderson, including a detailed mural in the dining room. It’s the perfect collaboration of art and history, and you’re welcomed in, just like you were visiting a good mate’s house. “A lot of our staff are working in hospitality as their chosen career, not just as a job to make ends meet, so they’re passionate about ensuring you have a fantastic experience,” says Venue Manager Shane Abbott.
THE HAPPENINGS
Keep an eye on their events throughout the year, including key local events like Tasting Australia. Plus, this crew loves live music and gets the vibe cranking every Friday night with DJ Stixx, as well as daily specials including $11 cocktails and all the things that make for a fun night out. It’s the perfect spot for a function — you can book any of the areas for a do, or lock in 80 of your closest pals if you’re after a larger scale event.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT
With 11 rooms and a twobedroom flat upstairs, The Mile End offers a comfy bed just minutes from the CBD — perfect for a local staycation or a central spot to base yourself for any of Adelaide’s incredible festivals. There’s convenient car parking and, of course, a bottleo on hand, so all bases are covered.

It wasn’t easy, but we’ve narrowed down our four favourite menu items: Bomdia Bowl — affectionately dubbed ‘the good day bowl’, this staple will set you up for good vibes only. The PB Smoothie — hands down one of the most popular items, this decadent smoothie is perfect for when you’re on the run.

hese thick smoothie bowls consist of magical frozen acai berries, before being topped with all kinds of goodness like fresh fruit, nuts and nut butters. They’re organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and contain no refined sugar… plus, they taste like summer in a bowl! With the original Glenelg store a success, Bomdia Bowls has taken the leap and opened a second store on Hindmarsh Square in the CBD. Offering all the same bowls that you know and love, as well as their classic savoury options (hellooo avocado toast!), it’s a great healthy option for anyone on the run needing a pick-me-up. Bomdia’s acai recipe is so perfect, it’s no
surprise they have a secret ingredient — boatloads of passion. In 2014, owner Dale Brewster took the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii, where he stumbled upon the bright purple bowl that would change his life. After developing a daily addiction to acai, he came home to Adelaide with a new career path in mind. “Bomdia Bowls was born to create the same experience I’d had in Hawaii — we had to meet the same quality and support fair trade with our suppliers,” Dale says. @bomdiabowls bomdiabowls.com.au

What’s acai?
If you’re scratching your head and wondering what acai is, let us give you the lowdown. FOOD: RIO VISTA OLIVES
WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Naomi Giatas Oils are bad for you — MYTH BUSTED!
A
dding extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) to your diet benefits the brain, heart and biome in your gut. As we learn more about good versus bad oil, our focus is on an SA business that produces this liquid gold. Rio Vista Olives has grabbed EVOO by its slippery horns, celebrating a product that they believe in deeply. Here’s why we love Rio Vista’s oils…
THEY’VE GOT THE KNOWLEDGE
For Rio Vista, it’s not just about producing quality EVOO — it’s about respecting the industry. It’s no surprise that their General Manager Jared Bettio is on the Olives SA board, overseeing the industry and providing support and training to locals. Marketing Director Sarah Asciutto has also completed her Olive Oil Sommeliers course, which provides training in cuisine matching, identifying faults and blending varieties of EVOO for flavour. “It’s important to be involved in the industry and give back, as South Australian produce can only
compete on the world stage by everyone working together,” Sarah says.
THEY’VE GOT THE PASSION
Taking an olive and turning it into a versatile oil is a process that Rio Vista has down pat. As Sarah says, “Harvesting, processing and bottling is done in-house, and pressed within six hours of harvest, so the fruit is as fresh as possible.” Rio Vista knows it’s about quality over quantity, so they choose to cold process their oil, leaving as many health properties intact as possible. They have also embraced new opportunities, supplying oil to pharmacies and for making soap.
THEY’VE GOT THE TECHNOLOGY Always looking to take it to another level, Rio Vista has invested in a state-of-theart processing plant from Italy. As Sarah explains, “It’s a closed system, which limits any oxidisation of the oil and optimises the taste.”
And they’ve been pushing the innovation boundaries with their Agrumato Olive Oils. “We co-process our olives with other products at a low temperature. Traditionally this is done with citrus, but we’ve created a suite of flavours with local garlic, chilli, turmeric, basil, and an exotic spiced oil.”
THEY’VE GOT THE KUDOS
Don’t just take our word for it — amongst their long list of accolades are Best Flavoured Olive Oil of Show; 12 Gold Medal Awards in the Australian International Olive Awards, and; being named as 2020 finalists for Business Excellence and Primary Producer in the South Australian Premier’s Food and Beverage Awards. There’s not enough space to list the other gazillion awards! @riovistaolives riovistaolives.com.au

FOOD: FLAMMEKUECHE
WORDS Millie Looker Fun to say and fun to eat, we’ve recently discovered this French-German take on pizza.
W
hen Karin and John Greenslade stopped by the Adelady office to make us some Flammekueche (pronounced as “flama-coosh”), we were sceptical. However, after eating 12 slices each, it’s safe to say our minds were changed. Exceptionally light with a satisfying crunch to the base, Flammekueche is a quick and easy snack, starter, lunch or dinner that the whole family will love.
HOW DO YOU FLAMMEKUECHE?
Traditionally, Flammekueche is topped with a sour cream and garlic base (the oils lusciously soak into the base while cooking), as well as speck, onion and a little cheese, before being baked really quickly for about four minutes. The beauty of Flammekueche though, is you can make it your own! Our favourite toppings so far are: • Sour cream, goat’s cheese, figs and honey. • Tomato passata, salami and cheese. • Sour cream, mushroom, spinach and gouda. • Tomato passata, mushroom and cheese. • Sour cream, pear, blue cheese, walnuts and thyme. • Sour cream, apple and cinnamon.
Best enjoyed with friends and a cold glass of wine or beer in hand, this traditional dish from the French-German border region definitely has the wow factor — without any effort or fuss. South Australian local John, and his German wife Karin, introduced Flammekueche to Australia under the brand Tarte Gourmet and they’ve worked hard to make sure it’s now available to South Aussies. You’ll find packs of five online and in selected specialty stores around Adelaide. If you want to try before you buy, you’ll also find Flammekueche at local wineries all over South Australia and if your local watering hole hasn’t heard of them yet, show them this article. They really are the perfect snack to enjoy with a wine. So, what makes this base so special? “It’s basically just flour, water, oil and salt, but the secret is how thin it is and how crispy it becomes once baked. It’s a really lovely flavour carrier, so you can put whatever you want on top,” says Karin. And she’s
absolutely right — these bases are yeastfree and aren’t carb-loaded or heavy, so you don’t feel like you’ve overindulged after a Flammekueche feast. @flammekueche_au tartegourmet.com.au

Apart from the obvious facelift they’ve given this iconic pub, the team brings all the ingredients for a good time, guaranteed. FOOD: THE KENTISH AND HOTEL ELLIOT
Same same, but different
vintage bottles of vino (rumoured to be remnants of a previous owner’s sessions on the sauce) set the scene for an appreciation of a good drop and a good time!
East meets west
More than just a quality tavern, The Kentish specialises in serving top-notch nosh. It’s pub fare with an Asian influence and there are plenty of options to share the love, with an array of tapas-style dishes and a cracking a la carte menu. Plus, they cater for vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free needs. Head Chef Albert Sony and his team know how to get your tastebuds dancing. What would you say to the likes of grilled halloumi bites with oregano and lime; Mexican beef brisket tacos; or marinated chargrilled
chorizo with a garlic and rosemary glaze? It’s a resounding YAS from us! For more of a solo affair, go a la carte and grab a rare beef salad with green papaya, green beans, chilli, peanuts, heirloom tomatoes, fried shallots and nam jim dressing; or a miso marinated Tasmanian salmon fillet with an Asian soy glaze, coconut rice, braised bok choy, onion, coriander and chilli salsa. One of each, please! Pair these delicious eats with your favourite tipple — and with an extensive wine list and a stellar line-up of craft beers, it’s no chore to make a choice. @thekentish

If you’ve been lucky enough to spend a summer on the Fleurieu Coast, you’ll know about The Kentish’s southern sister, the Hotel Elliot. Consistently good grub in a family-friendly space, the Elliot has big open windows overlooking The Strand on one side and all the excitement of the passing Cockle Train on the other. Not to mention Espresso Martinis and frozen cocktails flowing. This vibrant hotel is buzzing with locals and visitors of all ages, year-round… and it’s about to get even better! “The past seven years have been a wild ride, getting the Elliot to where we want it and now, we’re set to welcome more good times, having acquired the block next door,” says Matt. Think an expansive alfresco area; a dedicated spirit bar primed for sunset cocktails; and an undercover space, made for weddings, conferences and events, and you’re halfway there. The crew is set to swing open the doors in late 2021 and we know exactly where you’ll find us when they do… cocktail in hand, of course!

STYLE: FARQUHAR KITCHENS
Heartbeats WORDS James Worthington PHOTOS Avenue De Saxe You spend up to five hours in your kitchen every day, so it should have space, be functional and look all kinds of beautiful.
WHEN BUILDING OR RENOVATING, ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS CONSIDERED IS THE KITCHEN
I
f you work eight hours a day and sleep eight hours each night, there’s another eight hours left to cook or catch up with friends and family. A lot of that time is spent in and around the kitchen — the heart of your home. For over 40 years, Farquhar has become the heartbeat in thousands of South Australian homes, because each kitchen is tailored to the people in it. When building or renovating, one of the first things considered is the kitchen. You start to picture yourself standing in it,
preparing platters for the masses; talking to the kids as they eat their dinner; and even how you’ll keep those beautiful new benchtops clean from textas and free from appliance clutter. If you have an open-plan design, you’ll also need to consider how to move freely from the kitchen to the living and dining rooms with a cheeseboard and a glass of bubbles. Well, you can get those answers and even act it all out in a Farquhar showroom!

Surprising
You can never find a free power outlet when you need one! The benchtop pop-up power point gives you instant access to power for kitchen appliances, and then USB charging sockets for your phone and tablet. A gentle press of the bench and it’ll appear whenever you need it — voilà!
Organised
When you have loads of storage space, it reduces clutter and makes you feel sane. Their Blum® inner drawers give you easy access to those normally hard-to-reach items, from all three sides. And the Orga-Line inner dividing system can tailor drawers around everyday or occasional use.
But this is just the tip of the iceberg. If you’re building or renovating and would like to know about all the clever kitchen features available to you — like black granite scratch-resistant sinks, instant hot water or sparkling mineral water directly from your taps — drop by the Farquhar showrooms in Norwood or Plympton, or book a design appointment online. @farquharkitchens farquhar.kitchen
Everything and the kitchen sink
Nobody likes seeing dishes drip-drying on the benchtop. The Oliveri® sink solutions available at Farquhar have optional additional drainage baskets, bamboo preparation boards, bowl protectors, benchtop utility trays and even colanders that fit seamlessly into each sink design. You’ll never be stuck holding boiling pasta in one hand and a colander in the other!
Intelligent
Farquhar can also supply and integrate your necessities, like fridges and dishwashers, cleverly disguised inside cupboards and drawers. Temperaturecontrolled Fisher & Paykel CoolDrawer™ fridges are a convenient way to chill those additional drinks and desserts that don’t fit inside your everyday fridge or freezer. There are five different modes to choose from: fridge, freezer, pantry, chill and wine.

STYLE: SERAFINA BOUTIQUE
WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Everyone deserves a stylish life… without the price tag!
S
erafina Boutique is a women’s fashion label designed by South Australians, for South Australians. With eight stores across SA and a fast growing fan base, Serafina is an Adelaide success story. “It all began with my mum Nola, who used to buy her friend’s jewellery from the international jewellery fairs. This became so popular that we decided to turn it into a wholesale business. We must have caught Norwood Place’s eye because they saw what we were doing and offered us a space outside their centre, and the rest is history,” says co-owner Michael. Hold up though… talk to Michael's wife Emily and ‘history’ also includes the pair opening up another shop in Unley Shopping Centre just two days after they
got married! “It was soooo romantic, we spent our honeymoon in the shop,” laughs Emily. 10 years and a couple of kids later, the duo (with Nola’s support) have absolutely nailed what women want. “Our outfits are made for Adelaide women — we take into account the climate, practicality, and all items are based on the everyday woman who needs to be able to go about her day but still feel fantastic and stylish.” Emily is in charge of the fashion side of things and her priority is making sure she’s building a wardrobe that’s not only timeless and stylish, but has been designed for the everyday woman. “We always listen to what our customers want and consider their requests every step of the way which is why it’s been so successful.”

From extra small to extra large sizes, you can tell a female is behind the design choices. “The essence of our brand is providing coverage in all the right places,” says Emily. The thing I love about Serafina (and there’s a lot to love) is that they make clothes that are stylish and fun for women in their twenties and thirties, but also make golden girls feel young again. With bright colours and bold prints, you always get an extra pep in your step when you’re wearing one of their affordable outfits. Everything has been thought of. “Our fitting rooms in the newest shops are double the size of normal change rooms because we want our customers to come in and feel like they can relax and take their time, with plenty of space so they don’t get all hot and flustered. We want mums to bring in their kids and prams, and not feel claustrophobic.”
While Emily has the fun job of picking designs and fabrics, Michael is the veto guy. “A big part of the success of our business is our staff. We only hire people we trust and who genuinely love Serafina, as we know they have input into our brand. Pretty much all of our staff were customers we knew before they became part of the Serafina team. They’ll often come up with design ideas based on what they think customers would like, and we always listen.” Serafina Boutique is spreading style and confidence all over our fine state. From Norwood Place, Unley Shopping Centre and Rundle Place, to Westfield West Lakes, Westfield Marion, Golden Grove, Harbour Town, and now, Castle Plaza.

STYLE: MEGAN POTTER
WORDS Em Worthington We know that nature is best, so why choose anything else when it comes to your kisser?
M
egan Potter’s multi-award-winning cosmetics are made using 100 percent natural organic and mineral ingredients, so you can be confident that it’s good for your skin — so good, you don’t even need to remove it at the end of the day. Once you get to know the beauties behind this revolutionary Australian-made makeup and skincare, you won’t want to use anything else.
THE WHO
Cousins Megan Potter and Mandy Hawtin started this inspired organic cosmetic biz for ‘selfish’ reasons. “My background as a beauty therapist and makeup artist branched out into personal styling. I wasn’t comfortable recommending products on the market which can be packed with fillers, you’re often paying good money for water, and there aren’t colours that suit everyone. So, Mandy and I set about creating the missing piece of the puzzle,” Megan explains.
THE WHAT
Ever thought about the ridiculous-sounding jargon on the back of your products? Turns out you may not want to be putting some of it on your face. “I have a shellfish allergy and some of the scientific sounding names in skincare and makeup actually mean they contain products that set off my skin,” Mandy says. “And Megan has Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome so suffers from acne, so we both struggled to find products without ingredients that irritated these conditions.” All about quality, purity and simplicity, the range is certified allergy safe and toxin free so it’s safe for all skin types, actually reduces redness, heals pimples and won’t dry or irritate your skin. There’s no talc in it, so you don’t get that cakey look that blocks pores, and you’ll get a full refund if you don’t love it. Even better, all ingredients are biodegradable so Mama Earth will thank you!
THE WHERE TO START
Creatures of habit, it’s no surprise that most of us found a beauty brand that our mamas or friends recommended and we’ve stuck to it like glue. Now it’s time to move onto something better. Jump online and start with The Starter Pack! This handy pack includes a primer, foundation, concealer brush and Kabuki brush, which buffs your foundation to perfection, giving you a flawless look. Your skin will love you for it!
Established three years ago, Megan Potter Cosmetics is going great guns and the girls have even collaborated with local stylist Nat Tucker who curated collections of makeup perfectly colour-matched to her BOSS Program. @meganpotter_cosmetics meganpotter.com.au

he’s all about buying less, stressing less and living more — and Nat’s ready to help you smash it out of the park. Globally known for her colour theories, Nat is a Personal and Interior Stylist, and Online Course Creator. And while most stylists have thousands of colour combinations, Nat’s true to her word about simplicity, with only four. And boy, do they get results!
“We’re all guilty of buying something that looks good on a mannequin, is from a particular store or we get fixated on sizes,” Nat explains. “So many of us buy more and more, thinking extra options will improve our look, but the key is learning what works for you so you can feel confident in yourself.”
What’s on offer
Just like a BFF who’s keen to see you slay, Nat offers bucketloads of free style tips, including everything from how to buy the perfect blazer, pick the right hat, best lipstick, boots, sandals, handbag and bra colour to which prints work, what goes together and, our fave, how to pack a suitcase without taking the kitchen sink! Her four mood boards offer a streamlined way to assemble outfits and homewares that work; and The Boss Program gives you a foolproof system for shopping smarter, getting dressed faster, and feeling more fabulous than ever.
More than personal
Nat’s also recently launched her interiors program so you can work the magic of her
colour theories in your home, plus she’s collaborated with Megan Potter Cosmetics and developed four makeup collections which contain colours perfect for you. “I love empowering women who then teach these skills to their partners and families, too. By creating systems that make it easy for you to understand and implement a style that works for you, I’m proud to be lifting people up so they have the confidence to go for that promotion, start that new relationship, enjoy the space they’re in, and hold their head high each day.” And it’s not just about shopping, as Nat explains. “I’ll teach you to pare back your wardrobe to what really works, help you with op shopping or buy, sell, swap groups. It’s definitely a case of the simpler the better.” Excessive wardrobes, beware! Nat’s coming for you and only the fittest will survive. @itsnattucker makeitlookeasy.com.au

Rewind back to 1988 when locals
Daryl and Marilyn Wohlers opened the doors of The Tanunda Pottery Shop, selling beautiful handmade pottery homewares. Little did they know that their small store would expand to become one of the biggest handmade pottery shops in Australia! “We both worked tirelessly from the very beginning! I remember Daryl and I
moving terracotta pots every morning out to the front of the shop and then back in the evening,” says Marilyn. For decades, Wohlers has been famous in Adelaide for their gorgeous pottery and antique mahogany furniture, but they caught our eye when they started stocking colourful homewares, kitchenware, baby

gifts, men’s gifts, handbags, jewellery, scarves and furniture. Today, Wohlers is in a league of its own with three stores located in Richmond, Mount Barker and Tanunda — and it continues to remain in the family. Daughter Rachel is in charge of buying all the stunning homewares and to us, she’s the queen because she nails it every time. “Our customers love pieces that are unique and different and that they don’t see everywhere else. I really enjoy having a real mix of products — from practical kitchenware to gorgeous wall art and everything in between! After so many years of buying, I guess you just get a sense of what our customers like,” she smiles. Apart from the ever-changing colourful cushions and beautiful prints, people come from far and wide for their Maine Beach products — especially their hand and nail creams. And if you’re a candle enthusiast, like us, you’ll be thrilled to find the biggest wall of Glasshouse diffusers and candles you’ve ever seen!
TEA, ANYONE?
Richmond and Tanunda both have cafés inside the stores selling tasty bakery goods and, of course, coffee. They may be famous for their furniture but their Skinny Dirty Chais are some of the best we’ve tasted.
Rachel’s brothers are also involved — Paul is manager of their warehouse in Tanunda, while James heads up the furniture side of the business and handon-heart, is an absolute gentleman — just ask the Wohlers regulars! “My favourite part of my job is seeing the joy customers get from our furniture. Working in a family business is all I know, but I feel so proud when I see how our team works so well together,” he says. As well as stocking a massive range of Nordic chairs, recliners, theatre suites, dining, bedroom, office and outdoor furniture, James has his own range which he designs himself — The Signature Range. His keen eye for furniture and knowledge of what his customers want has helped him to create amazing bespoke TV cabinets and dining settings, amongst other things. The family’s genuine passion and good nature filters down into the business — everyone who works at Wohlers is delightful! So, what’s the secret to having a great team like they do at Wohlers? “Hiring nice people — you can’t train someone to care,” says James. @wohlers_homewares_furniture wohlers.com.au

t’s in times like these that you need a fairy godmother. Meet Jo Bennett from Homestyle Co., Adelaide’s most experienced home stylist. She’s always ready with her magic wand to revamp your home and secure the best sale price possible. You’re going to love her!
HOW DID HOMESTYLE CO. GET STARTED?
I’ve been styling homes for sale for over 15 years and completed over 6,000 properties! It’s amazing to see a house reach its full potential and have the vision come to life, giving the agent the best opportunity for a great outcome. Now, my daughter Amy and I lead the Homestyle Co. team together, managing our dedicated stylists and contractors. I couldn’t do it without her! We transform homes so they present perfectly while ensuring deadlines are met, creating that buyer frenzy.
Amy Watlers and Jo Bennett.
HOW CAN HOMESTYLE CO. HELP GET MY HOME READY FOR SALE? Every house is unique and we can be as involved as you want! From fully styling an empty home or organising a renovation blitz to a small partial styling, Homestyle Co. does it all. The key is to focus on the areas that will give you maximum return — it’s not just a matter of filling a house with knick-knacks and hoping for the best! We have a warehouse of furniture and accessories, and a strong relationship with reliable and efficient trades — so if your house needs a lick of paint or new lighting or flooring, we can manage it for you. The outside is not forgotten either. We work with landscapers and can recommend removalists and storage companies, giving you complete peace of mind.
SHE’S ALWAYS READY WITH HER MAGIC WAND TO REVAMP YOUR HOME AND SECURE THE BEST SALE PRICE POSSIBLE.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GETTING YOUR HOME PROFESSIONALLY STYLED?
It takes skill to create buzz around your home and it’s worth it when it results in a higher sale price! Our team is trained to work with you and your agent, looking at the area and the house, and then dressing it to appeal to a specific target market. This ultimately leads to a higher sale price. Cha-ching!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
From the initial consultation, I’m your only point of contact! That’s what makes it so easy. I create a design and recommend a plan of attack, and then let you decide what you want to do based on your budget and timeline. We make sure the photographer has the perfect home to shoot, and then continue the upkeep throughout open inspections up to sale. Everything is quoted upfront, so there are no surprises. @homestyleco

ithout that street appeal, dinner guests could judge you and potential buyers might not even look inside. If you’re looking to sell your home or wanting to inject a bit of long-term love into it, there’s a guy who can help make it happen. Stewart Fincher is a soil expert who understands how to create lasting impressions from the ground up. His landscaping business, Wild Finch co., specialises in outdoor renos, property maintenance and getting homes ready for sale. It began when he renovated his own home and yard on a very short timeline and strict budget. He also had a full-time job AND a pregnant wife at the time. The job nearly killed him… and so did she! He created Wild Finch co. to save homeowners the pain they went through. Stewy knows what buyers look for. He also knows that sellers want their outdoor
areas ready — FAST! He maximises outdoor spaces by re-planning paving areas, elevating garden beds and laying the right turf. A patchy lawn filled with weeds doesn’t leave a good lasting impression. It’s just something for the new owners to fix and fight about. “Lawns need the appropriate food, sunlight, weed control and watering at the right times of the day to avoid fungal disease,” says Stewy. Some are soft underfoot and others hardier for kids playing cricket, or dogs doing what they do best. If you’re selling and your lawns are struggling, he’ll recommend cost-effective types that are easy to train. If you’re staying or building a new home, he’ll look at your preferred lawn types, irrigation, pets and surrounding trees. Stewy breaks down the brief with a simple equation: Are you selling, or are you trying to get the most out of your home? If you’re selling, he’ll help you put emotions to the side and only suggest

ways to maximise your sale price. “Painting and pressure cleaning can make it look brand new,” he says. He also recommends recycled materials to keep costs down and always ensures new work complements the rest of the home. Stewy says, “Brick colour, timber and grass types should match. You can even find three-dollar bricks for 30 cents each on Facebook Marketplace!” A good first impression will get them to the door, but a strong lasting impression will make them want to buy it. e’ve been getting our cars cleaned at The Wash Malvern and Glenelg for donkey’s years and there’s a great reason for it — they do a fab job making sure we whiz around SA in the shiniest cars possible. But these days, we’ve got even more reason to pop past this hot spot — and it has a lot to do with coffee and cake.
WE’VE GOT EVEN MORE REASON TO POP PAST THIS HOT SPOT — AND IT HAS A LOT TO DO WITH COFFEE AND CAKE. Originally established in 2005 by Paul Sideris and now run with his partner Ashleigh Holbing, The Wash Malvern has recently undergone a mind-blowing transformation to match its sister in Glenelg and they’ve gone all out! It’s no longer a chore to get the cars washed — instead it’s become an excuse to hang out in their funky mint green café, sipping a fresh juice. We love dropping off the car and sauntering inside, before chatting to the lovely team and pulling out our laptops to make The Wash our office for the arvo. And trust us when we say the menu options are on another level — there is so much on offer, you’d think you were in a fully fledged café! We’re creatures of habit so
we keep going back for the outstanding watermelon and strawberry juice and the vegan pumpkin wraps, but we’ve also sampled their bircher muesli, granola parfait, healthy raw treats, dragon fruit smoothie and gluten-free cakes. You really can’t go wrong. When it comes to luxury car care, they take it to new heights with all the important services. “We offer it all — deep cleans, double rinses, plus plenty of extra add ons if you need it, like leather care, paint protection and even sun protection. We also offer memberships, so you pay a monthly fee and get your car cleaned as many times as you like,” says Paul. They take care of our cars in ways we don’t even understand, so there’s no excuse for our cars to be dirty ever again, with the revamped The Wash up the road! @thewashadelaide thewash.com.au

Redefining the stigma of men’s health and beauty
STYLE: KEPT
WORDS Ryan Burgess PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Kept owners Tom Eichner and Nathan Ralph recently started treating themselves to pedicures and noticed their mates were doing the same. The problem was, none of them felt comfortable anywhere they went. Welcome to Kept.
H
aving spent years in footy and cricket club change rooms, both Tom and Nathan have seen their fair share of manky toes and agree that, “No woman should have to go to bed next to that”. Tom and Nathan wanted a safe space for men to indulge, treat themselves and look after their health and beauty. Kept welcomes all genders and is all about comfort and confidence for men who want to take care of themselves, but lack the confidence to go to a typical day spa or salon with their partner. You can ask for, or even help yourself to, a large range of complimentary beverages as you undergo a manicure, pedicure, or get your hair cut by one of
Kept’s three barbers. Indulge and unwind with a beer, wine, cider or soft drink, or if total healthcare is the aim, crack open a kombucha or sparkling water. Fire up the TV and browse YouTube in their state-of-the-art infrared sauna (which we hear is good when you’re a little dusty); clean up those stray and unwanted nose, ear and brow hairs; or opt for laser hair removal. Kept features the latest technology which Tom assures me makes this process virtually pain-free. Whether a visit to Kept is a gift for yourself or the deserving (aka, in need) man in your life, or a couples experience that’s inclusive and suited to your man, Kept will keep you both looking and feeling fantastic.
Kept is also becoming a popular destination for bucks’ and hens’ parties. Why not start your day at Kept and head out looking and feeling better than ever on what many call your last night of freedom. The cool, comfortable and inclusive new Kept will definitely keep partners off our backs, with sighs and grumbles about being unkept a mere thing of the past. @kept_adl

ake two steps inside Kohl&Soda’s doors and you’ll get a sense of new owner Simone’s impeccable personal style. “I’ve just gone with what I love and it’s been fantastic to see that it also seems to be what other people love!” Stocking both SA and Australian designers where possible, there is a real emphasis on outstanding quality on an affordable budget, and it’s exciting to see some of our favourite brands fit the bill.
You’ll find crowd-favourites such as Ecoya, Etikette, Papaya, Madras Link and Robert Gordon in homewares, plus Mink Pink, Nude Lucy, Tirelli, Little Lies, Betty Basics, Staple the Label and Brave + True in fashion. And with a flock of loyal customers, Simone ensures that she doesn’t overstock each item, so you can walk away confident that you’ve snagged a statement piece that is totally unique. “These days, people are really attracted to the smaller stores where everything is a little bit different,” smiles Simone. Simone and Kohl&Soda are such a perfect fit that it’s hard to believe she’s only been in the biz for a year! When word got out that the previous owner was looking to sell, Simone saw her dream opportunity. “Being a local girl, I’ve always loved the shop and just didn’t want to see it go!” she says. Instead, Simone breathed new life into the store and immediately started working to supply beautiful, high-quality pieces to the community. While Kohl&Soda is certainly a local favourite, customers are travelling far and wide to get themselves a piece of
STEAL SIMONE’S STYLE
We can’t help but fangirl over Simone’s immaculate taste, so thought we’d ask for her top three tips when it comes to nailing the Kohl&Soda look, every time. 1. Don’t be too matchy-matchy, mix it up! Choose different textures when selecting cushions and throws to add interest and variety. 2. Bring a space to life with big pots or rattan baskets on stands filled with plants. Go big! 3. Choose your hero piece and then style around it. This may be a piece of art, furniture or a lamp. Remember the ‘rule of three’ — choose three items that have something in common and group them together.

STYLE: ELIXIR SKIN FITNESS
Say bye to breakouts T
here’s nothing worse than when you’re feeling hot to trot and then BAM — there’s a killer blind zit making itself at home on your forehead. If you’re anything like me, it will erase your beauty buzz and make you feel a bit self-conscious for the rest of the day. These once-off breakouts can be frustrating, but are usually easily explained. Perhaps you didn’t wash your face after a night of cocktails, or it’s that time of the month.
WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Don’t let a simple pimple ruin your day — turn to Rose from Elixir Skin Fitness, and let her work her face magic.
But what about the breakouts and skin issues that are more than just a pesky pimple? The flare ups that cause inflammation, pain, discomfort, low confidence and, worst of all, seem to have no solution? We’re back with our skin guru, Rose Bonasera from Elixir Skin Fitness, whose holistic approach has led to many success stories when it comes to tricky skin. There’s a reason why we only trust Rose with our faces — it’s because she’s simply the best.
How do you help troubled skin?
There is so much I can talk about when it comes to inflammation of the skin and it's certainly a passion of mine when I work with my clients. This is where a holistic approach to skin health is essential! Holistic means looking at the whole person — at Elixir, we don’t believe you can just purchase a procedure or a miracle product. I make sure my clients are being educated along the way, so they

understand why they are experiencing these problems. It means thinking outside of the square when it comes to their skin health, and adapting to a lifestyle that will bring them a clear, healthy glow. During the initial consultation process we delve right into the history of the client’s skin, from when they were a teenager through to their overall health, gut health, diet, lifestyle, past skin treatments and products, mindset, genetics, medication, contraception, exercise, stress, hormones and where they are in their life currently.
What are some of the skin conditions that you treat?
Inflammation presents itself very differently in every client. Examples of inflamed skin conditions include rosacea, acne, impaired skin barrier, hyperpigmentation, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, accelerated ageing, inflamed skin due to autoimmune disease and gastrointestinal diseases. Inflammatory skin conditions need to be treated very differently to a pimple or the odd breakout. I design individual treatment plans that are a real partnership between myself and my clients to achieve the desired results. It’s a team effort! @elixirskinfitness elixirskinfitness.com.au
How can we manage our skin and flare ups at home
It’s not just about the in-clinic skin treatment plans — we also send our clients home with an at-home routine too. That includes looking at their diet, skin products and gut health supplements. The skin is constantly changing as clients transition through their treatment plans, which means that the at-home plans will change along the way too. I provide ongoing support and reassurance to trust in the process and remain consistent, bringing them through to the other side. For me, it’s so satisfying to see the positive changes along the way, not just with their skin health, but in the relationship that clients have with themselves. Clearing the skin leaves clients with a level of self-confidence that creates smiles all round!
“AT ELIXIR, WE DON’T BELIEVE YOU CAN JUST PURCHASE A PROCEDURE OR A MIRACLE PRODUCT.”

STYLE: THE EDITED LIFESTYLE
WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Wayne Pearson These girls are guns when it comes to putting your house in order.
M
eet Melissa and Jade — the dynamic duo behind The Edited Lifestyle, Adelaide’s newest answer to organisation. Corporate powerhouses turned busy mums, they understand how a lack of time and a surplus of stuff can make your house feel overwhelming, which then runs into the rest of your routine. But help is here… and they come with arms full of storage containers.
WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?
For Melissa and Jade, it’s all about creating calm and gaining control by transforming the busiest areas of a home. “People underestimate the impact of a disorganised home on the rest of your life. We help our clients create manageable systems, which empowers them to let that flow throughout their lives,” says Melissa. For Melissa, there’s nothing more joyous than organising a playroom for littlies to explore, and Jade’s personal passion for organising pantries stems from her love of cooking.
HOW TO GET IT HAPPENING IN YOUR HOME?
While they’ve got plenty of packages on their website, The Edited Lifestyle will take on anything thrown their way. “Bringing someone into your home can be a big step, so we’re happy to take it slow. If you want us to do a full edit, come at us, but if you’d rather some product suggestions or a styling moodboard, we’d love to help,” says Jade. Get in touch with the girls and they’ll come up with the perfect solution just for you.
KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING Don’t be mistaken — this is definitely not a once-off deep clean. The girls build systems that are organised but not perfect. “We’re all about building a base level of organisation, so you can live your life normally and then reset back to those systems and routines when you have the chance,” explains Melissa.
STYLE IT UP
Another one of their many passion projects is styling holiday homes and Airbnbs. “Organising and styling go hand in hand — so we figured, why not? We can help put manageable processes in place for the owners, while creating a beautiful space for a getaway,” smiles Jade. @theeditedlifestyle theeditedlifestyle.com
THE EDITED LIFESTYLE’S TOP TIPS
1. Dedicate 10 minutes once a day to completely clear the dining table and kitchen bench. 2. Use baskets — lots of them — around the home to hide things. Anything looks organised in a nice basket. 3. Categorise items and store them accordingly. You’ll spend less time looking for things, we promise! - 82

Farewell to cute clutches for a few years and hello to what will become your new bestie — your nappy bag. But, just because you’re a mum, it doesn’t mean you can’t be a stylish goddess too. Cue: Willow Bay’s Nappy Bag, made from their signature neoprene! Willow Bay founders Tammy and Hayley have been curating bags that are both functional and fashionable for four years. Their brand new nappy bag is super stylish and equipped with everything you could dream of. Why? Because it was designed by mums, for mums. “We added all the features that were important to us when our kids were smaller. We also asked new mums to trial the prototype to make sure they loved every little bit of it. It was 12 months in design, samples and field testing to get to this point, but totally worth it.” Tammy and Hayley didn’t muck around when it came to nailing every detail! It’s got multiple pockets — just the right size in all the right places — a large zip pocket to hold your valuables, an open back pocket which fits your included change mat, six internal elastic top pockets, and they’re all

Speaking of babies, Willow Bay has welcomed a new addition — Pram Hooks! “This is the most convenient way to hang your Nappy Bag (or shopping bags) with 360-degree rotatable hooks and a strong velcro strap to wrap around your pram handles. It’s the one thing mums need when trying to multitask, and it goes hand in hand with our Nappy Bag,” says Tammy. STYLE: THE EYEBROW STUDIO
WORDS Em Worthington PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Imagine how different the Mona Lisa would look with defined eyebrows! These little face-framers can take you from resting-b-face to sunshineand-roses in a heartbeat — so why leave it to chance?
T
he Eyebrow Studio takes out the guesswork and with six stores including Glenelg, O’Halloran Hill, Mawson Lakes, Unley, Gawler and Payneham, their magic is only a phone call away. Plus, they offer a full range of beauty services — brow lamination, lash lifts, ear piercing, spray tans, body waxing, men’s waxing, epidermal levelling, teeth whitening — and they love helping you look and feel your best! Founder of The Eyebrow Studio Amanda Bennie gave us the lowdown on brow town…
WHAT’S THE SECRET TO PERFECT BROWS?
There’s no set textbook when correcting and creating each individual's perfect brows — we consider how much hair you’ve got to work with, your age, bone structure and face shape. For example, if your eyebrows are below your eyebrow bone, you’ll look like you’re frowning; or if you’ve got a petite face, you don’t want them too big or they’ll take over your face. It’s all about the big picture.

WAXING OR THREADING — WHAT’S BETTER?
BIGGEST BROW MYTH?
It’s a long-told tale that you need to line up the inner part of your eyebrow with your nose. Just like the faces they’re on, all noses are different! We start with a full consultation to discuss your overall face shape and what will look balanced, as well as age and personal style.
DOES AGE PLAY A PART?
Absolutely! Younger girls tend to go for a fuller yet defined look, so we get the best shape by taking the least amount out. Older women often go for a softer shape that’s not too thick and we suggest a gentle tint to cover their greys or thinning brows, so they walk out of the studio feeling amazing.
It’s bollocks that threading gives a better shape than waxing — it’s the person behind the method that will give you the best shape! We use two types of wax — hard for sensitive or older skin, for people using acne cream or if they go really red. Or, a stronger strip wax if your skin is suitable. If you have super sensitive skin or you’re on heavy medication like Roaccutane, then threading is best.
APART FROM SHAPE, WHAT’S IMPORTANT?
Once we’ve nailed the shape, we can perfect your brows with… Tint – Great for grey or light brows, it’s gentle and gives a natural look. Lamination – Perms are cool (when it comes to brows). This technique creates voluminous, full, feathery brows that are defined, yet natural looking. Brow stain – For brows with less hair or definition, this stains your skin and fills in
the gaps. It’s stronger than a tint but not as strong as a henna. Henna – A longer-lasting way to fill in gaps and create the ultimate shape, henna stains your skin for up to two weeks and tints your hair for up to five weeks. Micro blading – Aka semi-permanent tattoo. Wake up ready to roll every day — after your first and perfecting session, it’s normally just a touch up once a year. Brow Magic – This quality award-winning pencil is an easy way to perfect your brows at home. We show you how to do it perfectly, every time.
HOW LONG DO THESE TREATMENTS LAST?
It all depends on whether your skin is oily or dry, your colouring and your face regime. We run through all your aftercare so you can get the max out of any of these treatments. @theeyebrowstudioadelaide theeyebrowstudioadelaide.com.au

STYLE: GOLDIE STUDIOS
You glow girl! WORDS Hayley Pearson You can spot a Goldie girl anywhere. She’s the woman sashaying around town with gorgeous sun-kissed skin, glowing from the outside-in.
T
here’s something about having a Goldie tan that makes you feel like the queen bee. After opening their doors in Fulham and Malvern, word got out fast that Goldie Studios is unlike any other. And I 100 percent understand why… the tans are sensational! Full credit goes to owner Hayley Lloyd who noticed something was missing in Adelaide. “I’ve always been tan-obsessed but I couldn’t find anywhere in SA that felt really special and inclusive, somewhere that empowers women of all shapes and sizes, and also offers a variety of tans — from a sun-kissed glow to a deep bronze. So, I created a studio myself,” says Hayley.
Inspired by The Hamptons and Byron Bay, Goldie Studios oozes a beach holiday vibe and is a breath of fresh air in the beauty industry. Hayley’s mission from day one was to help make women feel confident stripping off in front of her, regardless of their shape or size. “Women are so mean to their bodies. One in three apologises to me for the way she looks! Us mums might have big floppy boobs now — but they just fed a human, so it's nothing to be ashamed of,” smiles Hayley. As most of us know, sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up and something that’s not permanent or expensive — and that’s where Goldie comes in.
Offering over 30 shades of colour, Hayley and her team are trained to match the best colour with your skin tone. “You should never leave a salon looking orange like an Oompa-Loompa,” laughs Hayley. Apparently, an orange looking spray tan can be caused by one of two things — the wrong shade for your skin tone OR the wrong person applying it. Hayley has been tanning for donkey's years and she’s surrounded by a team of professional well-trained Goldie gals so you know you’re always going to be in great hands, every time. @goldiestudios__ goldiestudios.com.au

So, they filled the gap and opened their first boutique clothing store, filled with pieces for busy women who love to look and feel great. Their range is full of colour and designed for everyday wear — from comfy pants for lounging around right through to beautiful dresses and skirts that will always brighten your day. Now offering sizes six to 18, their website also includes tips about which pieces are perfect for breastfeeding. The bricks-and-mortar store was an immediate hit, but the girls weren’t

Fabulously fussy, Lucy and Kelly care so much about the clothes they stock that they found themselves picking only two items from showrooms packed with thousands of pieces — which is a major part of why they took the leap to create their own #primpthelabel. “We got frustrated that a lot of brands still only go to a size 12 or 14. stopping there! Soon after, they opened their online store and introduced their range to the rest of Australia — an integral part of growing Primp into what it is today. “When we say we’ve been ‘lucky’, the road hasn’t been easy. We’ve worked bloody hard, with countless late nights, early mornings, stress… and man, have we learnt a lot along the way!” laughs Kelly. At Primp, it’s not about what’s hot off the runway — it’s about finding pieces that are flattering for every body type, while keeping the fun in fashion. “We don’t tend to follow trends, but really think about what our customers will wear time and time again,” says Lucy. Strong advocates for their beloved Lyndoch, they employ local women — especially mums — and they’re changing the game with flexible hours. “We’ve learnt that if you stay true to who you are and what you believe in, are passionate about your product and conduct yourself authentically, then you’ll attract a loyal following — which we’re immensely grateful for,” says Kelly.
THE ROAD AHEAD…
There’s plenty on the horizon for the Primp girls, with big plans in motion to broaden their #primpthelabel range and possibly even open another location… watch this space!
