Photographer James Burns’ pictures from rooftops around the city provide views of London few of us get to see as we rush around at street level.
Burns has spent the past ten years clambering around the roofs of some of London’s tallest buildings, capturing thousands of pictures of the capital as it lives and grows.
James Burns photographs, taken from over 100 structures including the 183m-high (600ft) Tower 42 in the City, show the changing cityscape of the capital.

The Corprate Side:
For my city in flux culture idea I would like to show then the different cultures in my home town Rochdale, I would look at the different influences that different cultures have on the city in my case a town. I would look at the different realigns with in Rochdale and look at the different architecture with their places of worship. For example a mosque and a church.
I could also could explore the corporate side to the town Rochdale with all the shops, banking, jewellers, high end clothing shops and the new buss station. I would do this to represent all the money in the town and how money runs the town. I wouldn’t take pictures or record the common wealth with in the town. I don’t really like this idea because first of all the town doesn’t have a lot of high end places to document but it’s an idea none the less.
I would also look at the diverse sub cultures that exist in Rochdale, for example a street with a large amount of Asian takeaways or on the other side of Rochdale you have the football stadium with the pub right next to (promoting football hooligans). I would also like to explore the counsel estates and the tower blocks in Rochdale to show the different community’s in the town and how they all coexist together with communication. Not always in harmony and I would like to show that with my photography.
CITY in FLUX (IDEAS) Showing The Real Side Of The Rochdale: Another idea would be to show the true side of the Rochdale the “Grit”. I would like to show the true side of people in Rochdale; The crime, racism, sexism, drug abuse, alcohol, the homeless and other harsh realities that exist in Rochdale. I could take a lot photos of examples of these subjects and maybe get some kind of interview with some of the people who are affected by these things and I could also get an interview with a homeless person. I would do this to sure how the homeless is treated, what other people’s views on the homeless and could have the interviews audio played behind some film of the city streets. This could show those who are forgotten with in the city the different people in the city, in this case the homeless being one part of the living breathing town full of different characters, experiences and stories.

These are some examples of the kind of photos I want to take in Rochdale to show the different cultures with in it. I would also like to focus on the sub cultures within Rochdale. Good example of culture and modernism.

I could do something like this where I would document sub cultures by taking pictures of them or many sub cultures. I could show the similarities and differences between the sub cultures through photography.

Can Good Graphic Design Help The Homeless? A NEW PROJECT REPLACES THE HANDWRITTEN SIGNS OF HOMELESS PEOPLE WITH EYE-CATCHING RECREATIONS, BUT MAYBE THE GRAPHIC DESIGN ISN’T THE POINT. “Homelessness is the white noise of the community," Hope tells Co.Design. "We live in a world that is so saturated by design and branding that these homemade begging signs just get drowned out." But the tattered signs that the people on our streets wave a thousand times a day to catch our attention aren’t just for begging. As Hope is quick to point out, many homeless signs don’t ask for money or food at all. Instead, they are works of self-expression: Statements by a human being about the world they live in.

Steven Huff Homeless Project Story: The homeless population in America is growing every year and a few years ago I lived in an area that seemed to have many homeless men and women walking the streets. As I took my daily walks I would see them, say hi, help them out with food and water or even blankets in the winter. One day back in 2006 I decided to document my walks through the streets of Phoenix, AZ so with my Leica MP in hand loaded with Tri-X I took the following photos over a 2 year period.

Here are some different styles of 80s graphics what I think looks good and effective. I really like the colours they used in the retro 80s graphics and the neon glow on all the line work. I also like the rainbow effect they have on the majority of the graphics used in the 80s.

Black and White Graphic Experimental
This was my first experimental Photoshop design with the primary picture I took in Rochdale for my homeless project. I wanted to explore black and white graphic design because I feel that it would disguise homeless people from people with a home. Inn this image there is a white silhouette of a homeless man that is semi see through, this represents that he is barely apart of society. The white glowing lines represent the rest of the people in flux with the town.
This is another experiment with black and white graphics which is a good example of inverted silhouette of a homeless man. I did this effect purely out of trying different to portray a homeless person.
This is one of my favourite Black and White experiments with my pictures because the simple black and white photography really highlights the homeless person’s silhouette with the bright white light in the background. I also like the fact that the image has some aspects of being symmetrical well the homeless silhouette brakes that.
In this image I tried to make the homeless silhouette stand out by embossing it and also I made the corners of the image darker to bring out the key part of the image which is the silhouette. I’m not a big fan of this experimental graphic because I don’t really like the effect on the silhouette I used, now I know not to use that certain effect.
Black and White Graphic Experimental
In this experimental graphic image I wanted to highlight the cup of pennies to show how important money is to those who are not in flux just to survive. I like this design with the black and white graphics because it shows how black and white the world is (with homeless people).
This is another black and white silhouette experimental. I wanted the homeless man to be a focus of the image because I wanted see what it would look like if the silhouette stud out a bit more than the other experimental graphics I’ve done.
I’m not too sure about this experimental image because I don’t like that fact the silhouette looks more like a person with a suit on. On the other hand I like how I highlighted the pockets by having those square brackets to show that he has no money.
This one of the more interesting experimental because I wanted to represent other people in this image and keep the silhouette of a homeless man begging. The black lines going across the page represent other people who are in flux. I used the contrast of black and white to show how different people who are not homeless compared with people who are.
Minimalistic Graphic Experimental
This is the first minimalistic experimental graphic I did with my primary research photos of Rochdale. I wanted to capture the depth of the image by high lighting some of the architecture in the original photo with the simple blue lines. I also added some grunge effect to the minimalistic graphic to make it look more warn down.
In this experimental graphic I really wanted to get across the minimalistic feel with this edit at the same time I wanted to keep the homeless a key part of the design. I like the colours in this edit because I only used yellow and different shades of grey. I feel using less colours make the image look more simple and minimalistic.
With this edit I wanted to try different fades with the image to show how homeless people are fade out from society. I also wanted to experiment with different contrast in colour because I wanted the homeless man to still stand out in terms of colour. I feel this edit turned out really well and I like the grunge effect on I put over the experimental.
In this design for my minimalistic Photoshop edit I wanted just to use block colours for this design. I did this because I wanted to keep the bare minimal of shapes and colour to complement the minimalistic style.
Minimalistic Graphic Experimental
In these experimental graphics I wanted to show more grit by the use of darker textures, colours and effects. Just to see if the graphics where I catching enough with the darker imagery. I like how the red cup is contrasting with the blue background of this image.
This is one my favoured of the experimentations with the minimalistic style of graphic. I really like how minimalistic it is and I also like the lines running through the silhouette of the homeless person lying on the floor.
In this experimental with minimalistic style of graphic I wanted to try a different texture on the silhouette. I also wanted to keep it black and white because I wanted to keep the grit true to the image. I feel this experimental turned out really well and I feel I will use this effect in another experimental.
In this design I wanted to keep the colour in the image to make it look more noticeable, but at the same time I wanted to have a dark feeling to the image. I achieved this by making the corners darker fading into black and kept the middle of the image coloured.
ART DECO GRAPHIC EXPRIMENTAL
This is my rst experimental with using an art deco style of graphic and I feel it has turned out really well. I didn’t think the homeless theme would look good with an art deco theme because of the vibrant colours but I now think that it compliments it.
In this experimental with using art style of graphic I wanted to use more gradients and vibrant to see how it looks. I don’t think it suits the homeless theme because it almost looks shinny and clean for a homeless themed poster.
I really like this experimental with art deco graphics and I like how simplistic it is but at the same time it has a strong message which is clear. I feel that I might develop this experimental a bit more because I want to see what it would look like with a light source in it.
In this experimental I wanted to add a light source at the top of the image to make the homeless silhouette stand out more with the type. I really like the added light in this image I feel it complements the overall look of the simplistic art deco image.
ART DECO GRAPHIC EXPRIMENTAL
I like this Art deco experimental form the colours used to the type placement because it looks simple but doesn’t look to boring and bland due to the colours I used. I also like the gradient effect on the background to make the homeless silhouette to stand out.
This is one of my least favourite Art deco inspired Designs because I feel it looks a bit boring compared to the other experimental. I’m not too sure of having “HOBO” on an actual poster because it might be seen as offensive. I do like the red coloured gradient background though.
On this experimental I was just trying some different colours in an Art Deco style. I like the mixture of colours but I don’t think it relates to the homeless theme due to the vibrant colours I used on this experimental.
I really like this experimental because of the light brightening up the image and I also like the 3D effect the gradient gives the walls and the oor. I’m not too sure on the typography placement because it looks a little placed and simplistic. I made the hat red because it emphasise how important money is to a homeless person and it is like a life line, red meaning blood.
80’s Rerto Graphic Experimental
This is my first experimental with an 80’s style of graphic. I used another black and white experimental and made it into a 80’s style graphic by adding blues, pinks and reds. I did this because I feel that these colours are used in most 80’s graphics.
I like this take on the 80’s graphic because it was quite easy to make. I just used the overlay effect on Photoshop with an 80’s styled graphic. I feel this one experimental turned to really well and does look 80’s retro inspired.
In this experimental I wanted to give the image more of a sci-fi feel so I implemented some space images and merged it into the original image. I like how I highlighted the man in the image by making the background him green.
This is my favourite 80’s styled inspired graphic experimental because of the patterns and the colours I used. I also like the lines that represent people who are in flux and how I highlighted the homeless person with a blue glow.
80’s Rerto Graphic Experimental
This is another 80’s styled graphic experimental what I did using one of my black and white experimental images. I wanted to keep this one more simplistic by just adding some neon glowing lines in a triangle grid to give it more of an 80’s theme.
With this experimental 80’s graphic I wanted to just add some different overlay colours and grid like lines in the bottom of the image. I like the look of this image because how simple it is and the colours I used in it.
This is my least favourite experimental graphic I an 80’s retro style because I feel it docent look to much like an 80’s retro graphic and I don’t like the colour I used compared to the other images. I do like how I highlighted the homeless silhouette with the blue pattern radiating from the silhouette.
In this 80’s retro inspired graphic I wanted to explore all the elements used in an 80’s retro graphic from the colours to the space imagery. I feel I have achieved this in this experimental graphic because of the grid, colours and space image I used on the homeless silhouette.
Word Clouds : Using Wordle
These are some examples of word clouds I made using the website Wordle. This website helps you design a word cloud by using words that you want in the word cloud, I wanted words to do with homeless people. I like these word clouds I made but I would like to make my own in the shape of homeless people of other homeless related objects.
Word Cloud Graphic Experimental
This was my first attempt on making a word cloud into shapes of something, I feel this experimental with word clouds turned out really well. I really like the how I made the shadows of the image the typography and then I left the highlights clear. I would like to implement some colour to this experimental.
I wanted to give the last experimental with word clouds some colour, so I created a gradient effect on the type. I also added some more type in the highlights of the image for a more complete look for this word cloud. I’m not too sure on the colours because I think these colours don’t really go with a gritty look for the homeless theme.
I wanted to show some of the development of this experimental because some of the process has some of good graphical outcomes. I like the text over the image because I like how the image is still is easy to see with the type over it. I also like the silhouette effect on the homeless man mixed in with type.
This is one of my favourite word cloud experimental because you can see image clearly in the type. I also like the light gradient on the edges of the word cloud to make the shape of the homeless man’s face stand out. I feel that these word cloud experiments all look really good, but I still want to produce my poster in my black and white style of graphic.

Homeless Awareness Posters
FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT IN FLUX MESSAGE IM GETTING ACROSS
Presentation I will be presenting my five homeless awareness posters by displaying them in frames next to one another in a certain layout and in the position shown below. I will also have written above the posters in a separate frame “For those who are not in Flux” to represent the homeless people who are not in flux.
For my City In Flux project I am trying to raise awareness of homeless people with a range simplistic black and white poster. The message I am trying to get across is how homeless people are not in flux because they are almost left behind with society it self. I want to show in my posters how homeless people are ignored and are separate from the people in flux. This is why I’ve called my project “For Those Who Are Not In Flux”.
TARGET audience My five homeless awareness posters will be targeted at all audiences to raise more awareness to those who don’t notice homeless people. To be more specific my posters will be aimed at ages sixteen and above because I feel that people around that age will be able to sympathise for other people in general and who are homeless. I also feel that at the age of sixteen, my posters won’t just need bright colour to attract people, it will just need a strong message and a good contrast of black and white.

my feelings and thoughts on my idea I feel my idea of doing a range of homeless awareness posters is a really good idea because it is a real issue with people being homeless and people ignoring them. I feel with simplistic silhouette based posters I can portray homeless people not being in flux and also show the rest of society in flux. I really want to focus on the homeless silhouettes and the message I’m trying to get across with the type I’m having at the bottom of the posters. For example “NOTICE ME” I feel is two simple words but put together they can be so powerful in terms of homeless people being noticed. I also might quote homeless people in the message at the bottom for example “Spare change” to maybe make people think to actually listen and maybe give a rather than take like the rest of the people in flux.
LAYOUT I will be designing five homeless awareness posters in a simplistic black and white style. I will be using silhouettes of homeless people because I feel they will blend in with the blacks but at the same time they will stand out enough to be noticed as the silhouettes of homeless people in the posters.

I like these fonts because they are simplistic and easy to read. I feel that the Square Sans Serif 7 font looks really good and stands but I also feel that it looks a little to digital. I don’t thinks a digital font will suit a campaign of homeless themed posters. The other font I chose is Sans Serif Shaded because I like the 3D effect it has and I feel that this font would stand out on a poster. But at the same time I feel that it might come across a little childish.
COllage fonts Overview These are two collage fonts I like out of the collection of other collage fonts I was looking at. I like these fonts because they suit the theme for a homeless poster. I feel that the CF Anarchy Regular font looks interesting and it looks textured but I also feel that it might be hard to read on a poster format. The other font I chose is Mustasurma because I like the individual look each letter has with a pattern and a different texture effect. I feel that this font would look really good on a homeless poster due to the rough and collage look the font has.
Distorted Fonts Overview Here are the two distorted fonts I like out of the collection of other distorted fonts I was looking at on the previous pages. I like these fonts because they suit the theme for a homeless poster. I feel that the RightBrew is my favourite font because it’s readable and goes with the homeless theme because of the slightly grungy edges of the type. The other font I chose is SideWalk because I like the overall distorted look of the type and I also like the eroded effect at the bottom of the type. On the other hand I’m not too sure that this type will be easy to read on a poster because people might not notice it when they are walking past.

Homeless Poster Typeography decision NOTICe
ME NOTICE ME I like the look of the type blending into the white at the bottom of the poster sample. I like the simplicity but I feel it looks to corporate and modern for an awareness poster. I don’t think I will be using this type for my homeless posters.
NOTICE M E
I like this font for purely the distorted effect and the feel it has. I don’t really like the shape of the letters and I don’t like how it is not well letter spaced because of this it makes it slightly hard to read. I won’t be using this font but I will be using it for inspiration for editing my own font and adding a distorted effect for my poster.
This type would look good, if it was embossed at the opposite angle so it will go with the angle of the wall in the poster example. I also feel that the type looks a little cartoony and I don’t feel that a cartoon like font would suit a something like a homeless awareness poster.
NOTICE ME This is my second favourite font I chose because I like the distorted look with the type because it goes well with the gritty look I want to achieve with my homeless posters.
NOTICE ME I like this font because it has a distorted look that goes with the homeless posters I’m designing. I also feel that it doesn’t work with this poster sample, due to this I don’t really like this font because I feel that they are better fonts out of the selection I have.
NOTI
ME
This will be the font I will using (Mustasurma) because I feel that it looks really distorted but readable and I also like the collage look with each individual letter. I also feel that it almost looks like a homeless man has ripped up pieces of newspaper to create this collage looking typography.
Homeless silhouette For Posters These are the original silhouettes I got of the internet, credit to “June 3rd Homeless People “By Cereberus8. I will be editing and refining these original silhouettes I got from the internet and make them my through redrawing them in Illustrator and Photoshop. I really like all the homeless silhouettes, I will be choosing different silhouettes depending on the angle and the layout of the image I’m implementing them on.
These are thee silhouettes after editing them and making them into block silhouettes, I will be distorting them and editing them when I start on the five homeless posters. I will be also altering them into slightly different positions so they suit the images I’m implementing on. I feel these homeless silhouettes will work really well with the black and white style I’m going for with my posters.
Examples of good type placement
Images Im using for the Posters
This will be the first image I will use for my first Homeless awareness poster with a black and white style. I chose this image I took in Rochdale because I felt that this is a stereo typical spot for a homeless person to spend their day. I also like the angle of the picture I took because it has a message in it, that there’s no light at the end of a homeless persons tunnel.
I will be using this image for the second poster, the message will be “Notice Me” because I feel that homeless people are ignored on a daily bases. I will make the silhouette stand of the image so it will get across the message of “Notice Me”.
I like this image for the A3 portrait poster because I feel that I can implement a good homeless silhouette at the entrance of the tunnel. The message I want on this poster is “Nowhere to Go” because I feel that homeless people don’t have anywhere to go in the city.
For the last poster I want the message to be “Rough Sleeper” because I know that all homeless people sleep rough and people don’t realise it. A rough sleeper is another term for someone who is homeless and I feel that this would look good on a homeless awareness poster.
This will be my third A3 landscape poster. I chose this place to take this picture because I like where the steps are in this image and I would like to add a silhouette sitting on them. I think this image would really benefit from being black and white.
“MY Life depends on it homeless poster development For the first poster I needed to open the original RAW file in Photoshop to manipulate various setting in the image. I wanted to make the image black and white, I did this by changing the HUE of the image. I also made the overall image have more of a contrast between the blacks and whites, I did this by changing the contrast settings.
I noticed that there was some colours still in the image so I had to remove all of the colour of the image, I did this by changing the Hue saturation so it had no colours.
In the third stage of development in my first I then added some gritty texture looking effect homeless poster I needed to implement my on the homeless silhouette by using a simple homeless silhouette. After I did this I added a downloaded brush of the Brusheezy website. shadow to the silhouette to make the silhouette of the homeless man have more depth.
After adding the gritty effect on the homeless silhouette I then added some typography into the poster. I wanted it to go with the theme of the poster and I also wanted it to go with the path of the tunnel.
I then added a cup with a glow coming emitting of it, I also added a life line on the cup to symbolise that the homeless man in the poster is depending on the money of others. I feel this completes the poster and links in with the typography.
I then added a grungy effect around the edges of the poster.
After some valuable feedback, I was informed that instead of blending the type into the poster I should have it more placed on the poster. I did this so the type would stand out and would look more like a poster.
“Notice me homeless poster development
For the second poster I opened the original RAW file in Photoshop to manipulate various setting in the image. I wanted to make the image black and white, I did this by changing the HUE of the image. I also made the overall image have more of a contrast between the blacks and whites, I did this by changing the contrast settings.
After placing the image in Photoshop, I then implemented a homeless man silhouette. I then added some grainy effect to match the other posters and to make it look grittier.
I wanted to add a eroded effect on the bottom corner of this poster, I did this with a brush on Photoshop.
After some valuable feedback, I was informed I then added the new type with the added that instead of blending the type into the poster I eroded effect in the top left to make the black should have it more placed on the poster. I did type stand out. this so the type would stand out and would look more like a poster, so I removed the type.
I then added a grungy overlay filter over the whole image to give it more of a gritty feel to the poster.
After adding the gritty effect on the homeless silhouette I then added some typography into the poster. I wanted it to go with the theme of the poster and I also wanted it to go with the angle of the wall.
After adding the plain black type, I added a gritty overlay on the type to make it go with poster.
“No hope homeless poster development
With the third poster I opened the original RAW file in Photoshop to manipulate various setting in the image. I wanted to make the image black and white, I did this by changing the HUE of the image. I also made the overall image have more of a contrast between the blacks and whites, I did this by changing the contrast settings.
After placing the image in Photoshop, I then implemented a homeless man silhouette in white because I want it to stand out of the dark background.
I then added some grainy effect to match the other posters and to make it look grittier.
I then added a gritty filter overlay on the whole image to make it look more homeless themed and dirty.
I then added a good place for were the typography would go on the poster, I then made the white distorted background blend in with the image.
After that I added the type onto the poster, I feel that the font I chose for my posters go with the type really well. I also added a grungy white overlay on a low opacity on the type to go with the poster theme.
“Nowhere to go” homeless poster development
With the third poster I opened the original RAW file in Photoshop to manipulate various setting in the image. I wanted to make the image black and white, I did this by changing the HUE of the image. I also made the overall image have more of a contrast between the blacks and whites, I did this by changing the contrast settings.
After editing the RAW file in Photoshop, I then had to crop the image to a portrait format. I did this because this poster will be one of my portrait posters.
After placing the image in Photoshop, I then implemented a homeless man silhouette in black because I want it to stand out of the light background.
I felt that the image looked to clean for the kind of theme/style I’m going for. So I added a really good overlay filter to make the image look more gritty and grungy.
I then wanted to make the edges of the poster a lot darker because I felt that it would have a really eerie effect on the overall image.
I then added the type to the image so it would go with the angle of the floor in the image. I achieved this by using the skew and the warp tool in the transform menu in Photoshop.
After adding type I realised that the type in the poster isn’t really readable because of the warping on the text. So I deleted the original text placement and started on the background for the new type for the poster.
I feel that the poster looks a lot better with the new type placement and I feel that the font compliments the overall theme of the poster.
“Rough sleeper homeless poster development
With this poster I opened the original RAW file in Photoshop to manipulate various setting in the image. I wanted to make the image black and white, I did this by changing the HUE of the image. I also made the overall image have more of a contrast between the blacks and whites, I did this by changing the contrast settings.

I then added the type to the image so it would go with the angle of the walls in the image. I achieved this by using the skew and the warp tool in the transform menu in Photoshop.
I feel that the poster looks a lot better with the new type placement and I feel that the font compliments the overall theme of the poster. But I felt that the type needed to be highlighted so it can be more noticeable as a poster.
I feel that the poster looks a lot better with a white background behind the type because it makes the type on the poster stand out.

E v a l u ation I’m really proud of this project because I feel that I have answered the brief in a unique way and style. I feel that I have given my city in flux project has a really good narrative throughout my work, I also think that the message I am trying to get across is clear throughout my campaign posters. I like how I took a different direction with my posters because I feel that they answer the brief in a different way because I focused on what is not in flux and how the city is moving but homeless people are left out. I feel that creating my project and basing it around homeless people has opened my eyes to those who are less fortunate than I am because I feel privileged to go university and have all these amazing opportunities.
After finishing this project I feel that people of today’s society including me do not notice people less fortunate like homeless people and that people take many things for granted. If I was to go back and redo my city in flux project I would like to explore the lives of the homeless so I could find out the story and implement it into my designs. I would also would revisit the first poster I designed because I feel it doesn’t go with the other posters in a graphical sense, but it has one of the strongest messages. Overall I feel that my project has turned out really well and I feel that I have answered the brief in my own unique way.
For those who are not in flux
