WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO SEEK INSPIRATION? Dark place, usually. I have to have eaten, had coffee, listen to blaring hip-hop music. WHEN/ HOW DID YOU START LIKING DARK THINGS? Probably having undiagnosed ADHD as a kid. My mom’s always told me I’m kinda morbid. I have dark humor also.

(Fig 1.1.1b) perfect penny

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DID YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL? The first band that pops in my head… I was Baby Spice. I wanted to be Posh Spice, but I became Baby Spice. I kinda liked the choreographed dance steps. I think I got the darkness from being repressed, being around super strict Chinese-Catholic… I went to a Ctaholic high school. WHO’S YOUR FAVORITE LIVING ARTIST? Skip Skip Skip IF YOU CAN HAVE 1 ENTIRE DAY TO EXPLORE MANILA, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? I would love to go around and commute. I like nature, but probably, I’ll go find abandoned place where there’s music and butts. I don’t know if I like dancing, but I like jumping. I’d go somewhere strange but with my friends, cool people. Probably a church with cool music. An abandoned church. IF YOU HAVE THIS PURSE SENSE OF SELF-CONFIDENCE AND YOU GET TO DRESS UP AS WHOEVER OR WHATEVER, HOW WILL YOU DRESS YOURSELF UP? Probably as a nude dancer. Like an opium den momma. I’ll just wear a bra and kimono. IF YOU COULD PAINT ONE PART OF MANILA AND CHANGE IT TO SOMEGTHING ELSE THAT’S ON YOUR HEAD, WHERE WOULD IT BE AND WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE IT TO? The first thing I thought of, but it’s very inappropriate and probably because I’m still angry, is my mom’s place. I want to burn it, but it’s bad though! Sorry, mom! I haven’t explored Manila much because I just got back.

IF YOU CAN HAVE A BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF ANY PLACE IN THE WORLD, HOW WILL YOU PAINT IT? I haven’t been to Iceland, but I want to go to Iceland… OK, LET’S GO TO ICELAND. HOW WILL YOU CHANGE ICELAND? I don’t know. If I don’t like a place I just march out. I’d rather make my own place than change it. I want a place that has… clean bathrooms, sex dens, nutrients, art studio, lots of confetti and cake. I’m trying to age but… I could see myself burning a house and getting a piece of cake.

WHAT’S THE FIRST ART WORK YOU EVER SOLD? It was from my first show in Hopworks Urban Brewery, this bike-beer place in Portland. I sold 4 pieces. I was around 20 or 19 at that time. One of them was of this portrait of a Japanese girl I had coffee with. I think I really like to draw people’s faces. I feel like when I’m fascinated with a person, I have to draw her. The last person I drew was this girl I wanted to take on a date, but I ended up dating her boyfriend. That was a mess. working? pt.3

(Fig 1.1.1c) Is your medicine

IF YOU COULD BE A CARTOON CHARACTER FROM YOUR PAST, WHO WOULD YOU BE? I want to watch Space Jam. I want to be a Lola Bunny, maybe because I am not feminine like that at all.

WHAT IS YOUR DEEPEST SEXUAL FANTASY? It changes. Right now, I don’t know what it is. The first thing that came to mind is a tall building and open air. Something dangerous. It’s like I don’t know what my deepest sexual fantasy is, but I want to know. It’s frustrating. WHEN YOU WERE IN CATHOLIC SCHOOL, WHAT THOUGHTS USUALLY WENT THROUGH YOUR HEAD? I was just so bad, I stayed up really late. I’d be up drinking til 7am with a bunch of male friends and I’d go to school really sleepy. I would draw my teachers, I was always doodling. I wish I studied but I couldn’t focus. I had a secret boyfriend and I’d pretend to be in school, but I’m usually not.

(Fig 1.1.1e) geminid

HOW DO YOU FIND YOUR CURRENT CULTURE NOW? I’m so in love everyone. I’m really excited to know everyone. I’m really picky, I like to selectively retain. I feel like meeting everyone here makes me want to move back here. I feel inspired. I feel like I can find people I can really relate to here. IN A DIFFERENT WORLD, IF YOUR FEELINGS WEREN’T REPRESSED, WHO WOULD YOU BE NOW? I’d be in charge of something art or music related. I’d be rich and travelling a lot. I’d be a good influence somehow. Be really independent. I haven’t found a real home because I’ve been travelling a lot. I kinda like Manila this time around because I’m meeting new people.

IF THERE’S A SONG THAT DESCRIBES YOUR STYLE COMPLETELY AT THE MOMENT, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I’m quietly very drawn to all these contemporary pop stuff. I always wonder, like, is this me? Can I not sleep for three days and party and dance all night. All these things I see in music videos, I kinda want to do it. I also have a lot of aggression, like when I think of being in my own music video, I see myself bashing things. I want to get a fish bowl and bash my head into it. DO YOU LIKE THE CRACKED FOREHEAD OR THE CRACKED FISH BOWL? Hmm. In the music video that I’m creating, I want to bash my head into an aquarium, and the for a second everything goes all chaotic and then i go inside the fishbowl world. Music video people, please don’t steal anything. Haha. I think it would be cool if somebody did that.

cine working? pt.1

WHAT ARE YOU DOING RIGHT NOW? I’m grinding coffee with my fingers.

(Fig 1.1.1d) Is your medi-

IF I ASK YOU TO PAINT SOMEONE RIGHT NOW, WHO POPS IN YOUR HEAD? I’ve been thinking of Super Starlet showing her panty, or whatever she wants to show. She has really pink nipples, I think that was the first thing she ever showed me, a picture of her pink nipples. Hot pink, cute nipples.

DO YOU COLLECT ANYTHING? I have a lot of journals, but as of now, no, I’m not collecting anything. WHAT VALUES DO YOU WANT TO PASS ON TO THE NEXT GENERATION? I want people to be OK with sexuality and gender roles. I want people to be people, be more sensitive. IF YOU COULD LOOK OUTSIDE AND JUST TRIP, SEE SOMETHING BEYOND THE EYE COULD SEE, WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU’RE GONNA SEE? A naked woman. Probably it’s Super Starlet.

( 1 . 1 . 2 )

Name: carriel santos Nick Name: TYANG Sexuality: F Birthday: december 26, 1989 Birth Place: manila Hobbies: painting, woodworking, toy collecting, mineral rock collecting and sculpting Sports: darts Music/Singer/Band: klaus nomi , blondie and tonetta Food: pizza Drinks: black coffee Color: pastel colors Friends: many to mention :) Deepest fear: to be buried alive Quote you live by: things that are real doesnt need a reason. Define love: all we know that love is a deep feeling or sexual love but the truth is, you can find love in everything. Who is your first crush: skeletor from masters of the universe. What is your type: I am a chubby chaser. First kiss: i got it from a girl Have you ever been in love: always His/ her qualities that you like best: his sense of humor and he can put up with all my shit.

DESCRIBE YOUR ART. My art is baduy and very kitsch. It has no boundaries and every piece that I make is from my experiences. WHAT IS YOUR MEDIUM? Mostly wood and acrylic. I also do paintings on canvass. DO YOU COLLECT ANYTHING? ANY FAVOURITES? I do. I collect Ultraman mosters, Filipino comics, folk art. My favorite art to collect is Skinner. WHAT IS THE FIRST ART WORK YOU EVER PURCHASED? The first artwork I purchased is… The first was a Skinner toy. It was a set I got from Vinyl on Vinyl. IS THERE ANY ARTWORK YOU WISH YOU DID YOURSELF? I want to make fibreglass sculptures. I’m actually learning how to work with fibreglass now. Hopefully I’d be able to do it someday for my exhibit. WHEN DID YOU START MAKING YOUR TYANGANIZE? I started in 2014, I was just making fun of my friends with the portraits. YOU HAD A DIFFERENT STYLE OF MAKING ARTWORKS BEFORE. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT? In 2009, I was doing acrylic on illustration boards. Then I had this hunger to do art with a certain technique, so I tried doing watercolour. But I later on realised I wasn’t feeling it and I wanted my art to still be fun. So in 2014, I changed everything that I was doing again. I even changed my street name—I’m a street artist—from Kariton Kai to Tyang. Tyang is also an inside joke amongst my friends. I’m the only female in our group and they treat me like a tita, that’s how I ended up being called Tyang. I would trip on people’s faces and called it Tyanganize. WHOSE PORTRAITS YOU’VE CREATED ARE YOUR FAVOURITES? Steve Bushemi, Trevo, and Fuzi, the cat of Ryan and Garovs of EverywhereWeShoot. Garovs and Ryan were actually the first that I’ve done a Tyanganize portrait of. They gave me the opportunity to paint on wood, and that idea grew from there.

WHO DO YOU WANT TOP COLLABORATE WITH? Pao Martinez, because he’s doing folk art that I really like. Naïve and child-like. If you look at his pieces, it could really make you happy. JP Quizon… I like his work because it looks so happy and colourful. AS AN ARTIST, WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? 90s pop culture. I loved He-Man, I had a huge crush on Skeletor. ARE THERE ANY OTHER ARTISTS IN YOUR FAMILY? I have a grandmother who’s a photographer. My other grandmothers… There’s a grandmother on my father’s side who’s a fortune-teller in Sta. Ana. My mother’s grandmother was an aswang-hunter in Leyte. When I found out about that, I was like wow grabe ha, hindi man lang napasa sa akin. DOES YOUR SURROUNDINGS AFFECT YOUR ART IN A WAY? I’m always surrounded by art; almost all my friends are artists. It’s challenging because it’s hard to find your own unique style when you’re surrounded by art made by other people. Thankfully, I think I was able to establish a style that I can call my own. My fear is… when you run out of ideas, when my mojo gets dry. It’s not uncommon for any artist. As much as possible, I study, I try to find something new, I do research, anything that could boost my creativity. SO DO YOU THINK ART IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE LEARNED, OR IS BEING ARTISTIC A NATURAL-BORN SKILL OR TALENT? Nowadays—with the generation now—anything can be learned easily. From cooking to sex. You can read about it anywhere. Lahat naka-hain na. Everything’s spoon-fed. But it’s up to you how you’re going to go about doing things. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AS A CREATIVE INDIVIDUAL? I don’t have plans. Go lang ako kung saan. I never expected that I’d be doing what I’m doing now. I mean, I studied mass communications in college, not fine arts. WHERE CAN GO TO SEE MORE OF YOUR WORKS? I have furniture right now on Vinyl on Vinyl. I have an intestine-table that’s made of wood. I carved it myself. My furniture are based on my drawings. You can also check out my works in Facebook and Instagram.

IF YOU ARENT AN ARTIST, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? I’d be a micro-biologist. I have a microscope at home and I like looking at stuff under it. BASED ON YOR DAILY ROUTINES AND ACTIONS, WHERE CAN EXPECT YOU IN FIVE YEARS? I’d be the same! I wouldn’t be bored learning new things.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO SEEK INSPIRATION? Actually, I’m just always at home. I seek inspiration through the internet, books. I would check references on my iPad, and I would also collect picture books, children’s books. I have 2 kids, so it’s like multi-tasking… I buy books for my kids and then I have references. I take pictures of what I like and then may nabubuo ako. I like teddy bears and stuffed toys. My kids are 1 and 2 years old. YOU MARRIED YOUR IDOLED AND FELLOW ARTIST ANDRES BARRIOQUINTO. HOW DID YOU GUYS MEET? On-line. We first met through Friendster, then it became Facebook. And then eventually we met here, in Cubao X. We married a year after. We both studied in UST pero hindi kami nag-abot because of our 11-year difference. HOW WILL YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ART? The recent one… It’s a sculpture that has many tentacles. Somebody told me, interpreted it, as a mother… marami siyang galamay and marami siyang mata. A mother is usually paranoid or palaging nag-aalala. Marami siyang mata, maraming possibilities. That explanation made sense. The conceptualization and execution of that piece took 2 months. HOW WILL YOU DESCRIBE YOUR AESTHETICS? Creepy but beautiful.

WHAT INTERNATIONAL ART DESTINATIONS DO YOU VISIT? I’m happy with Asia. I like the art I see in Asia. Hong Kong, Singapore. WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE LIVING ARTIST? Syempre si Barrioquinto. Hahaha. But it’s true! Sya talaga eh. Internationally, I like Mark Ryden. WHAT ARE YOUR MEDIUMS? In my recent show, it’s oil paint. I also like acrylic and watercolor. But I enjoy doing pen and ink. WHAT’S THE FIRST PIECE OF ART YOU’VE EVER COLELCTED? Dexter Sy. I like exchanging pieces with different artists. FIRST ART WORK YOU’VE SOLD? It’s the one I sold to my current manager! I met him the same time I met my husband.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE AS AN ARTIST? Every day is unforgettable. Feeling ko kasi an artist you’re cynical. You embrace the sadness of life. It’s like you’re miserable but you’re really not. Sadness becomes your comfort, it becomes your alter ego. But ever since I became a mom, after doing my art, iba nanaman ang personality ko. Mommy duties. But every day is memorable. WHAT ARE THE TV SHOWS THE INFLUENCED YOU GROWING UP? I like MTV’s Happy 3 Friends, Little Lulu and Casper The Friendly Ghost. When I became a mommy, my childhood influences flashbacked. I started doing more child-like, creepy art works. I really like children’s books and cartoons. I can’t remember them all specifically, but I watched a lot of cartoons when I was younger. WHY IS YOUR INSPIRATION ALWAYS DARK? HOW DID IT COME ABOUT? I don’t really know, maybe that’s how I really am. Beauty and darkness come hand-in-hand, I guess. I like beautiful things with a splash of darkness. The emotions are more real. ARE THERE ANY ARTISTS THAT YOU FEEL ARE UNDERRATED AND DESERVE MORE ATTENTION? Daniel Aligaen is good. Intricate yung designs niya. I think she deserves more exposure. HOW WILL YOU DEFINE OUR CULTURE AND IF THERE’S ANYTHING YOU WANT TO CHANGE ABOUT IT? I want us to be more Japan-like, minus the bastos. I think the people there are very open-minded and nice. WHAT SONG DESCRIBVES YOUR STYLE COMPLETELY AT THE OMENT? The title of my next exhibit is actually the title of a song by Neon Indian. I like psychedelic, and usually the titles of my exhibits come from songs. VALUES YOU WANT TO PASS ON TO THE NEXT GENERATION? Keep the passion and the dedication to the arts. As much as possible be spontaneous para authentic ang pag-gawa. So it wouldn’t be for image’s sake, or for other people’s sake.

FUTURE DREAM COLLABORATIONS? With my husband, Andres. BEAUTY PAGEANT QUESTION: WHAT IS WORTH SUFFERING FOR? Family. love for my husband and children. Corny pero yun talaga eh. It’s the family that I have right now, the family that I’m making. BASED ON WHAT YOU’RE DOING RIGHT NOW, WHERE CAN WE EXPECT YOU IN FIVE YEARS? I want to lie-low, pero tuloy pa rin. I want to multi-task as a mom and as an artist. I want to be relaxed, but I’ll still be doing shows. If there’s an opportunity, I won’t let it go. I honestly couldn’t tell what’s gonna happen to me in five years. Can you?

(3.3.0) YUMI PURUNGAN

ON THE LOOP

Royalty of a distant cyberpunk future? Princess Nokia brings a distinct collection of digital tunes from the NYC underground with her debut album, Metallic Butterfly. Disparate musical influences from the 90s and beyond mesh with contemporary lyrical views like gender equality, to produce diverse, eccentric sounds. Otherworldly and stylistic, this Harlem princess is putting her own edge to the scene, and she’s someone to look out for.

Asian female rapper of the WestAwkwafina changed the rap game with her 2012 album, Yellow Ranger, as she dually tackled social issues like racism and cultural identity, while embracing her femininity in a way many women might have not. She released tracks that take pride in her body and a bodily function otherwise known as taboo, hitting listeners’ consciences with “Queef” and “My Vag.” Humorously witty and musically inclined, Awkwafina spits fire in celebration of women and her experiences as an Asian American, and it’s safe to say that she won’t be stopping there.

Soulful and melodic, the tunes on Kali Uchis’s Por Vida are the type you would listen to while drifting on a cloud. Her time transcendent music and husky voice, comparable to the late Amy Winehouse, gives off a chill wave that mixes styles from doo wop to hip hop. However, she does not hide behind her pastel image and love songs, as her lyrics are provocative, sensual, and shameless of her womanly needs! She’s worked with Tyler, the Creator of OFWGKTA for the album, and sports an aesthetic that stretches from neo-chola, to 60s through nineties flower child, while exuding charisma through and through. If anyone’s looking for the new “it” girl of the decade, Kali Uchis could be her.

When listening to music, we might isolate the vocals from the instrumentals, but with Warpaint, it’s something else. The all female band’s self-titled, second album features an extensive and expansive, deeper sound than their first, and the distinction between vocalists, Theresa Wayman and Emily Kokals’s voices from their guitar riffs seem more melodic than different. The album oozes drifty bass lines to muffled, dreary drumming, seemingly typical of shoegaze, but a bit difficult to pinpoint. In a genre where there aren’t that many “all girl” rock groups going around, the power of this quartet calls to attention that contemporary rock hasn’t really revolutionized itself in years, but if anything, this contributes to it.

MANILA BY NIGHT

RNAL

PRESENTS

REVIEWED BY @WATDAHEL_ MARCEL, @INAHEVANS, @BABYGIRLZIEE

Alex’s mom reminds me of my own mom with all this nagging! they talk exactly the same with all the “punyetas” and “bwisit namans” #momsofmnl ANG GWAPO NI WILLIAM MARTINEZ TANGINA!

William Martinez sings so well ?!?!? ANG FRESH NILA RIO LOCSIN, GINA ALAJAR, LORNA TOLENTINO AT ALMA MORENO. Wala akong ma-say! Hahaha

Cherie Gil as a lesbian is so cute! i never thought i’d ever say that in my life.

“i love you manila, kahit ano ka pa man; bata, matanda, mabaho, pangit, babae, lalake, bakla o tomboy.” TRUE TRUE!

Punieta at its best. Long live the Philippines!

This movie was during the 80’s but i feel like we could still relate to it in 2015. with all the sex and all the drugs and all the usual problems people our age still have.

-

a

is this like an 80’s manila version of Skins?

Kems.

alex only uses manay sharon for money or is it really love? why does our media always show straight guys using gays for money??!!

almost everyone in this movie cheats on their partners or has multiple partners at the same time. i wonder what’s with the Philippines and it’s fascination with cheating?

if this was an accurate portrayal of what went on in manila at night during the 80’s then i think basically nothing has changed....

so, just like the present, most of the problems and issues they faced were: what they wanted to do about their careers, sexuality, getting knocked up “accidentally” and have very limited options, prostitution and drug addiction.

is it weird that almost everything that happens in this movie, there’s a friend / someone i know that i’m reminded of? what does this mean??

lesson: the world is so small and everyone is somehow connected to each other and you just don’t know it.

so in the end they somehow overcame their issues and problems. The drug dealer went to jail, the drug addict stopped doing drugs, the prostitute found a decent job... and the gay guy stopped being gay? did i get that right?? so being gay was up there with drug addiction and prostitution?

Ayon nga sa karakter ni Cherie Gil, “I love you, Manila, kahit ano ka pa man—mabaho, pangit, babae, lalaki, bakla, tomboy. Ang sabi naman ng bulag na karakter ni Rio Locsin ay nakikita lamang niya ang nais niyang makita. Para sa marami sa ating nakakakita, mas madaling magtapat ng pag-ibig sa Maynila pagsapit ng umaga.

Ang bangis bangis lang siguro.
