DAYDREAM NATION 10
Daydream Nation by Alyssa Africa The picturesque perceptions inside your head. All the things that exist only at the back of your mind. Everything that has been magical, otherworldly, beautiful and phenomenal. Something which is solely fictitious yet is only ever yours. It electrifies your senses and motivates your soul. It is where you can do whatever you want to do, be whoever you want to be and nobody could ever intervene on behalf of another the moment you step inside it. That instance when you feel alive more than ever because that moment is yours and nobody can steal it away from you.

strange dreams strange scenes I can’t remember clearly but there’s one time i dreamt about floating. Not flying, floating, like a balloon. When I was in the air, the sky turned dark like night and suddenly the moon turned into to Cheshire cat eye, from Alice in Wonderland. He gave a big smile and suddenly I can feel the gravity pull me down. I fell on the pile of soldier cards who then dragged me to meet the Queen, who turns out to be my mom. I called her “Mom” but she didn’t recognize me. She’s as scary as the real Queen from Alice in Wonderland. I cried because she didn’t recognize me so i ran. I ran and ran and cried and I saw at the end of tunnel the back of my family, my boyfriend. They were so happy, they couldn’t hear me crying for help. Then I realized I’m already awake, sweating, tired and eyes swollen because of crying. – Greta

Astral Projection. I woke up and stood up from my bed and Saw myself sleeping. Then I walked around my house which was totally empty, afterwards I ran back into my bed/myself. – Nikki I endlessly continue to run through a road which for example is in China, the red and green Chinese kinda walls are on both sides, with stone bricks as the roads. But when I come upon a huge door and run through that, I’m like in this new country~ Japan, with japanese kind of walls on both sides. – Anonymous

How will you describe your art style? I feel like I don’t really have an art style. It’s like a mosaic of artworks from different artists that inspire me. Artists like Agnes Cecile, Danny Roberts, Brandon Boyd, Kelly Thompson, Katie Rodgers, Tokwa Peñaflorida, Soleil Ignacio, etc. Where do you find inspirations? Inspiration is everywhere, but sometimes I find it within me. What type of music do you listen to? Nice music. Haha. Worship songs, alternative rock, acoustic, OPM, pop, indie, instrumental, Christmas music...the list could go on but most of the time, I listen to the type of music that the radio station, Jam 88.3 plays. :) Name three artists you would like to collaborate with My dream collaborations would be with Tyler Gregson, Muse (e.g. make an album cover for them), and Adam Young. But if we’re talking about something feasible, I’d like to collaborate with my friends: Gem Llave, James Mendoza, and Nico Favis. I think they are great artists! :) What are your future goals as a creative individual? To be better at what I do. To use my talent to glorify God. A few words of inspiration you would like to leave our readers? Keep making good art. Do everything with love.

“ALWAYS GO FOR QUALITY & LONGEVITY.” 31
Please introduce yourself Hi! I’m Adrian. I’m a recent film graduate of UP Diliman, and I love taking photographs! Tell us a bit about how you found an interest in fashion photography It started with liking to take portraits. Then, I realized I can best apply it in the field of fashion since it involves taking photographs of people and their clothes. I’ve just been hooked to it ever since. Have you had any formal training as a photographer? Not really, though I have taken one photography class back then when I was still in film school. How would you describe your style in terms of taking photographs? Aesthetic inspired by film, conceptually inspired by love. Who or what inspires you? Love for the craft, and love for people I care about and who cares about me are the things that inspire me.
Would you say there is a special connection between the photographer and the model during a shoot? Why? I think that in order for a photoshoot to work, both the model and photographer should be in harmony with each other. I wouldn’t straight out call it as a “special” connection as I think that leaves a different connotation, but I do think its best to work with someone who’s comfortable in your presence and trusts in you and your craft. At the end of the day, its a job and like any other, should be professional. In what setting or atmosphere do you work best? Give me the job and details and if I like it, then I’m on it. Any words of wisdom to share with our readers?v Enter the field for the right reasons. Always go for quality and longevity. :)

NICO BERNARDO
“We’re all thieves.”
39
40
Hello boys and girls, I am Nico Bernardo, 22, musician. I love camping and I will paint all over the place. Describe yourself in 3 words. Spontaneous analog fiend What kind of music do you listen to? I listen to a lot of prehistoric classic rock and roll from way back. Dinosaurs like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Pink Floyd. there are way too many great artists back then. believe me. it’s such a shame that most people today suffer from these money making so called ‘musicians’. It’s audio slavery. I dont even think they deserve to be called musicians. but I dont hate them. Now I’m into Syd Barrett and John Frusciante. John Frusciante is such a poignant individual. I try to rip off most of his works and compile them into a different tune but always fail to do so. I love the way he presents his music in its rawest form and in a very different way than most artists. How would someone describe your style? hmmm.. Style. I don’t stick with any particular style. as an artist, we steal ideas or styles from other artists whenever we feel or to be inspired by them. siguro automatic na lang na lalabas dun yung sarili mong style. We’re all thieves. Where do you find inspiration? Music and Female counterparts. females arent complicated. they just want some attention. I find inspiration in a form of liquid inside a dark green bottle with a cork lid. Name some of your favourite artists. John Frusciante. Dali. Ed Templeton. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Jessy Mendiola. Name some people you would like to work with. Sino pa ba edi si Cenon Norial! at si Francis Anabo. Future goals? Live a life with a dozen pugs and teach them how to paint with their paws.

THIRTY DAYS WITH JANNA ILANO
66
67
DAY 1 Home alone. Briefly entertained by the thought of having an interesting stranger on the house who I would make coffee, take photographs, and read my favorite books to.
DAY 2 Printed some things for the wall.
68
DAY 3 From my journal entry: “I strive for acceptance.”
69
DAY 4 Started re-reading The Bell Jar (Sylvia Plath), and had some life re-evaluation.
70
DAY 5 I did a Charles Bukowski mini zine to pass time.
71
DAY 6 After The Bell Jar, I re-read The Stranger (Camus). Those two are my favorites because I could relate to them the most. At least, at this certain phase of my life.
DAY 7 A self-portrait.
72
DAY 8 Cigarettes (bought during Cinemalaya, July 25, 2012). That time I tried switching back to Lights just because I thought I needed something different. They remain unlit.
73
DAY 9 My usual observations. I have always been drawn to hands, and that two visible veins on my wrists are one of my favorite things.
74
DAY 10 I couldn’t get out of bed. Half-awake, half-asleep.
DAY 11 I saw my grade school yearbook, and my face had been cut off. I don’t remember how that happened but it’s like I never even existed. Coincidentally, I couldn’t remember much details from that time.
75
DAY 12 I saw this insect flying around. I like the little things, but I feel like the little things are always temporary Sure enough, after just two seconds it flew away.
76
DAY 13 Our maid during her afternoon soap break.
77
DAY 14 My sister (Jarysse) after being away for almost a month. I like having the room by myself, but having company is always nice. I have to try harder in remembering that, because I always seem to forget.
78
DAY 15 It was gloomy. Saturday was a bore, I just did pretty much my usual routine.
DAY 16 Jarysse. Also got out of the house after 20 days...only to buy more books. I feel like having books is the only constant thing in my life right now. I’m not complaining though.
79
DAY 17 September 17, 1983 - my parents wedding anniversary. Marriage is always a sensitive topic here in the house, well for me, because I don’t really believe in it. But I shy away fromconfrontations, and so I try to avoid having that conversation with my parents. 80
81
DAY 18 I don’t read much erotica, but Anais Nin will always be an exception. I couldn’t wait to read her journals.
82
DAY 19 It was just dark the whole day.
DAY 20 Great things have expiration dates.
83
DAY 21 Woke up late (like always).
84
DAY 22 Initial phases of a new project. I hope I could actually finish this one.
DAY 23 Siesta
85
DAY 24 I watched Moonrise Kingdom again. Probably one of the best films this year, and comes real close to The Royal Tenenbaums (still my top Wes Anderson film).
86
DAY 25 After BBC’s telecast of Obama’s speech, which was good and had things that are hopeful like, “we should be strengthen by our differences, not defined by them.”
DAY 26 My messy room, my shelf, and a light reflection on the mirror.
DAY 27 I found my 12-year-old self!
87
DAY 28 Midnight snack. I realize that I couldn’t last a day without coffee (or tea). But I find coffee withdrawals far more difficult. DAY 29 Bloom Arts Festival (Cubao X) on blue. Got home at around midnight filled with new music and stories.
88
89
DAY 30 I didn’t even realize that today’s the last day of September, and so this was the only photo that I took (the first one I got around to taking after waking up).
90
DAY 31 A 15-minute brownout for the first day of October. This is Jarysse making use of the remaining battery life her laptop had. She was watching Teen Choice Awards.

You can wear what you like as long as you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing. I love that fashion is very innovative and currently fashion in the Philippines is starting to move a bit forward. Who are your style icons? I actually don’t have a style icon because my style really depends on my mood. What and who are your inspirations? I really look up to a lot of fashion bloggers especially local fashion bloggers. That’s why I get my style inspirations from them. Sometimes I get my inspirations from cartoons, magazines and the streets. What type of music do you usually listen to? I love music but I really don’t have a specific genre in mind. As long as it’s nice, I’ll listen to it and memorize the lyrics. A few words of inspiration you would like to share to our readers? Be confident and love yourself. Don’t forget to do your research and don’t be afraid to stand out. Thank you and God Bless!

EVIL
EYES
adhd FEATURES 125
Please introduce yourselves Hi, we’re Greg and Joe from the San Francisco based band Evil Eyes. We’ve been best friends for almost five years; we met in college in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This band has been something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, but we’ve been on different coasts (Joe has been in SF the last 4 years). Last fall, Greg moved to San Francisco and we started Evil Eyes. We released our first EP in February, and the “Keep Your Mind on Me” single is our third release this year. How did you guys came up with the name “Evil Eyes”? Greg: I was living in Nashville last year in an old and run down mansion built by the Arch Bishop of the Catholic church in the 1940’s. I rented a room there along with six of my friends and bandmates, and the place definitely had a haunted vibe. One night, I fell asleep and had a weird half awake/half asleep nightmare where I felt like I was being watched by all these ghosts. I woke up the next day and wrote the song “Evil Eyes”. When I moved to San Francisco last fall and we started the band, we thought it made a great band name. How will you guys personally describe your music style? Greg: I describe it as dark California pop. When we were writing songs early on, our main influence for the band was Fleetwood Mac, so that’s where the “California” comes in. We’ve gotten a lot of comparisons to Echo and the Bunnymen as well, and I think that comparison stems from the fact that we try and write lean and minimalist songs with a lot of hooks. Joe: Greg pretty much nailed it on the head. I basically tell people it’s melodic, dark pop… with a dash of psychedelia. Are there certain feelings you hope to convey through your music? Greg: We’re both music junkies, and our tastes are pretty wide ranging. But for Evil Eyes, we have a clear vision of what the music should convey. I think our music has a certain nostalgic feel, slightly spooky and cool, but familiar. I imagine our songs playing on the dashboard of an old convertible, while you’re driving across the desert at night, with the one you love by your side. Joe: We also want people to be able to easily relate to the lyrics, which is why we write about personal experience heartbreak, love, growing up, feelings of paranoia - all that goodness. Can you tell us more about your newly released track called Keep Your Mind On Me and how it has progressed from the previous ones? Greg: Keep Your Mind On Me is definitely a song where we’re starting to branch out and try some different things, rhythmically and vocally. We built the song around the drum machine beat, which definitely has a danceable feel to it. It’s part of our progression and it’s happening naturally. We’re recording the songs that reflect where we’re at in our lives.

“the place definitely had a haunted vibe. One night, I fell asleep and had a weird half awake/half asleep nightmare where I felt like I was being watched by all these ghosts. I woke up the next day and wrote the song Evil Eyes.”
Joe: We added new elements on this single too, such as 12-string guitar, analog synth, and glockenspiel. Our female vocalist, Angelica Rockne, sings on both songs, which I think ends up giving them a slightly different feel. Can you describe to us what the debut album is going to sound? (We are pretty excited about this!) Greg: We’re going to record the album in the fall. We’ve become a 5 piece band now, so on some songs we’ll have live drums and a big sound. Other tracks will be minimalist and stripped down. We’re going to make a record that’s cohesive, stylized, and hopefully has a classic feel. I expect the record to sound more lush and beautiful than anything we’ve released so far. Any words of wisdom you’d like to share with us? Greg: Stay golden. Joe: Be here now.
