In these times, should we be free to blend and transform in any way femininity and masculinity? Would it create actual sense to combine two dualistic concepts? Picture the future with an extremely diverse society, is that where we’re heading? Today, at fashion shows, try to observe carefully. Look at the models, they are becoming more androgynous. Males do have an increasingly feminine appearance while females, a masculine look. A screaming indicator of the androgyny trend in fashion is the Bosnian male model, Andrej Pejic. Gender definition does not necessarily refer to the sexual identity of an individual. It is the sociocultural meaning linked to men and women. Like how someone is supposed to act and behave according to their sex. Gender is not something we are born with. Sex is. Gender is taught. It is learnt through a process of socialisation. Our surroundings, our culture and where we grow up, these aforementioned factors affect our gender. The society above all influence the way most people in this world behaves. Guys are to display male traits and girls, vice versa. We do grow up with these ideas set by society. Boys and girls learn from an early age that skirts and pink are for the ladies and suits and blue are for gentlemen. This is what my generation is taught while growing up. It is, in my opinion, constraining people in a box labeled with certain words that traps an individual. It locks up the identity that the person will build up, imprisoning them in a set of pre- concepted ideas about sexuality. We are in the year 2013, look around you, look how far the human race has come in every aspect of life. The line that separates the appearance of the sexes is increasingly lighter. In social terms, roles are blending and developing. The difference between men and women working and performing in society is gradually disappearing. We are heading to an era where gender will no longer be relevant, men and women roles will have no distinction. ALYSSA AFRICA EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Introduce yourself and the brand. My name is Willar, a designer for almost 5 years. What I usually work things out differently and I like to manipulate things according to my vision. I use to collect toys and stickers up until now and put it into my inspirations most of the time. And I wanted to feel that I’m a baby boy everyday when I see them. My clothing line is Salad Day. And it was developed last year and I come up with a tag line “Filling the world with sticker” which means sticking happiness. How did you come up with your brand name? The word SALAD DAY came up when I was 18. When I feel so great about what I have accomplished or let’s say I had a great feeling on that day, I called it SALAD DAY. Then I translate it to my craft which is making clothes. Because every time I make clothes, I feel so happy. Then I made a clever Logo for SALAD DAY, a blue Broccoli with an abnormal proportion thinking that it’s funny, simple and cool. Describe yourself in 3 words. I’m Always Young What’s your uniform? Just a nice shirt on top. I always wear shorts most of the time because it’s so comfortable, fresh and cool. I get easily irritated sometimes when I wear trousers. I wear Jeremy Scott for my shoes. And right now, I wear SALAD DAY jacket every time I go out. Describe your design process. Design process, no, I don’t have one. Sometimes I can be a lazy cat. I just lie down in my bed with snacks beside me. But when an idea pops up in my mind, I immediately grab my notebook (which I always have since high school) to sketch and jot down notes to get started. Then do it the whole day until I get what I really wanted to happen. What is the brand’s difference from others? I always aiming to be a high and classy brand I don’t want it to be a budget brand. A brand that is worth to invest for. I put a lot of works in my clothes. Balenciaga seaming, bias taping, and double top stitching in every seam. I remember when I was in high school, I always keep my allowance to buy a shirt. I’m always day dreaming about it and I like it on that way.
19
How would you describe your style? Just Imagine a young adult who is obsessed with his childhood. But I’m not getting any younger. So, I have to be the guy of my age (is this how to describe style?). How would someone describe your style? I don’t know. No one told me what my style is, can you tell me? What kind of music do you listen to when creating your creations? Empire of the Sun, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, RAC remixes playlist, Grimes, My outdated ipod playlist and a crying baby in our neighborhood during 4pm. Where do you find your inspiration? I have 3 inspirational things when creating something. 1st, I really like the statement “there’s something that the brain can’t do. But the hand can” so hands on is really inspiring. 2nd I’m always inspired making abstract lines in my clothes. So the more I don’t use my brain to make clothes, the more I’m inspired to do it more. I challenge my work in making things differently until I get satisfied. And 3rd is my favorite, “YOUTH CULTURE” Favourite designer? tomoyo daidouji for one. Who should be wearing you? Those people that has a simple sweet sensibility but not the ghost bumping super sweet. Those young at heart carefree and like to dance. And I won’t mind borta men to wear Salad Day. What are you working on now? I’m working on right now in our Salad Day 1st anniversary something. It’s going to be awesome. I’m just planning what will happen. And producing merchandise for platform manila this coming April which will be held in Rockwell tent. Street or high fashion? Street but in high sense of fashion. Street is really fun but I don’t be like the fish ball attitude street. You know! Do you think people dress for themselves or others? I think they should dress for themselves. For me dressing is a form of self- expression. On that way, it may convey your ideas, what you’re thinking and what you wanna be. People who dress for others is so lame.
20
What are your plans for the future? I’m planning to make a team. Salad Day team. But still I’m the head of it. As of now, I have a lovely graphic artist and sewer plus an on call sewer.I don’t want to work alone. I’m really open for creative energy as long as my vision as an artist is there. Keeping it young and making it happy. And right now, I’m planning to curl my hair and eat sushi again. adhd

Please introduce yourself My name is Aisyle Deriquito. I was born in the Philippines, moved to Maryland with my family at age 3 and lived in Maryland most all of my life. Right now, I am a first year student currently attending Virginia Commonwealth University, as an art student. I am still undergoing the Art Foundation Year, so I do not have a major yet. However I am considering focusing on illustration. There are a lot of mediums I am interested in working with, but my specialties are drawing and painting. Those are the two things that I have always been doing even before art school. My favorite thing to paint and draw is people. The structure of human forms is a challenging and interesting subject to me. It personally never gets old, and being in the city of Richmond, I am always surrounded by people. I hope to be able to render my life changing experiences through my work someday. For now I am still trying to find my voice as an artist.
25

What was your earliest memory pertaining to art? I cannot pinpoint a particular memory that has to do with art. I do remember at a young age, my twin sister and I would draw all the time. We made books together. It was an interesting dynamic, because we would collaborate with each other but often we were competing. Our stories were realistic dramas—that never really made sense—but drawing people and making characters was what we were focused on. We always tried finding new ways of rendering people, and looked to realistic cartoons for inspiration. I do remember also, my ability to draw was always acknowledged throughout grade school. What was your very first work of art? Trying to remember my first work of art is also difficult, but I do remember this piece that I did in elementary school. The assignment was to copy a painting done by a famous artist. I remember choosing a work by Edgar Degas, who now happens to be my favorite artist. The piece is called, “Four Dancers.” It is one of his famous ballerina pieces; I remember being proud of it and having it hung up in the glass case at school. I do not have the piece anymore but I remember for whatever reason the piece looked literally like a mirrored copy of it—as in it was a reflected view. I cannot remember it much, just that I really liked it.

Where do you find inspirations? Where I find inspiration really depends on what I am working on. Often I will look at famous artists that have done similar things to what I am doing. When I am working on a painting I will have other reference paintings done in different styles to help me out. If I am working on a sculpture, I will do some research on works by different sculptors. It really all depends. Sometimes I will look at my past work that I am proud of to get myself through. Tell us about your style and approach in art making It is hard to say what your style is when you are still figuring out who you are, but I think I have somewhat of an idea of mine. Being in an art school really forces me to diverge from my style and what I am used to. I tend to have a soft touch on things; a lot of my work will always have very subtle, toned-down aspect to it, whether it is through the color or texture. For me the aesthetic aspect is what I focus on when I approach anything. I do like to plan things out before I dive into it, but a lot of my planning will just be a vague concept. I would like to think that my process of making art is still in the works, considering there are always things I will want to change after I am done. I have learned a lot this year that planning is key, and using tools such as rulers and thumbnails are important to the final product.

Please tell us about the place where you live in and how it has affected your art As long as I am in art school, I am living in the city of Richmond. This city is filled with many amazing artist. My professors are well known artists and my peers are aspiring artists like myself. It is quite competitive and getting your name out there is one of the things a lot of people are forced to think about. In this way, I try really hard to make my art personal to me. In a city of so many art styles, being an interesting and noteworthy artist is crucial. I make an effort to have my work be more individualized through more personalized approaches. Lastly, a few words to share with our readers Thank you all for taking time to read. I know a lot of you can relate with me that being an artist is a daily struggle. To find meaning in yourself and your work is the challenge however it is also rewarding. When you are still going through that process like I am, it is about what you are willing to explore. Hopefully we all get to where we want to go with our art, good luck and find what you love!

Introduce yourself I’m Roby Gabion, I have lots of nicknames but most of my friends call me Arbie/Beng. I’m 22ish and currently working in the graveyard of Ambitions. Describe yourself in 3 words. A professional late commer who fears a blank canvas. A discriminatively quirkily serious and cynically hilarious who tolerates non-existent words, typos and incorrect grammar. (Please don’t count it) How did you get into art? Art called me when I was still inside my mother’s womb. Seriously I think it all started when I was 3, my mom gave me pencils, she told me that from that day on I never put the pencil down and I never stopped drawing and sketching. How would someone describe your style? Most the people who saw my works told me that it’s more on the “Surrealism” side with a gothic touch, some of them said that it’s an urban art with pure whimsicality. How will you describe your personal style? Honestly, I really don’t know. People may think that it’s “Surrealism”, “Baroque” Gothic or whatever but I just draw whatever I want. I’m not particular with style or anything. I believe that you don’t have to stick to just one style. We have to explore art it can get us to so many places as long as we have our imagination after all it’s free and limitless. I’m a monochromatic type of artist, and the truth is I fear colors I’m afraid that I wont be able to execute my ideas using color but in some point I have to face my fear so apparently I am trying to learn watercolor. And another thing I don’t believe that there’s a perfect artist for a specific style. It’s the imperfection of your work that makes the art perfect. What kind of music do you listen to? I think music and art belong together,I do listen to music 80% of my time well the other

20% is when I needed a moment of silence. The kind of music however just depends on my energy level, mood and the drawing itself. I really try to get in the mood of what I am drawing with the help of music. I can’t paint properly without it! It’s like the ritual of putting the lights on in my room, incense, music, then I feel like art can begin(well I am just kidding with the incense part Haha). If my playlist runs out I easily get distracted so before I start anything else I have to set my player to “repeat all” I mostly listen to mediumpaced music. Nothing too fast and nothing too slow (if I listen to really slow music, I tend to draw much slower. but sometimes I guess that is a good thing.) To name a few: Yiruma, Jay Chou Yuna, Jason Mraz, Sarah Barreilles, The Carpenters, Mogwai, Lenka, Kimbra Vows Where do you find inspiration? Million wonders and beautiful things around me have inspired to the creation of my artworks. Even though they are merely pen on paper and imperfect watercolor blending, yet every each of them is like a journal of my life findings and emotions that I have felt during special moments. I enjoy spending my time exploring different types of medium such as graphite and ink, watercolor and acrylic. I love walking around alone to a place where I haven’t been to or watching the clouds passing by in the blue sky and just looking outside my window and often I get a lot of inspirations from there. Most of my free times are spent when I am daydreaming. I love nature well who wouldn’t? I love to stare at the trees and especially I love to feel the cold breeze of the night.
Name some of your favourite artists. Audrey Kawasaki, Agnes Cecille, Masaki Mizuno Mark Powell, Raphael Vicenzi, Florian Nicole Victo Ngai, Ise Ananphada. Name some people you would like to work with Audrey Kawasaki, Agnes Cecille, Masaki Mizuno Mark Powell, Raphael Vicenzi, Florian Nicole Victo Ngai, Ise Ananphada. Future goals? I’m planning to have my own studio where I can teach art to anyone who’s passionate for art but not anytime soon. I’m still trying to make more money, I really want to have my own art exhibit.

Who is Lola Androgynous and how did all the blogging start? Well, Lola Androgynous is sort of my alter ego. Anyway, aside from being a full-time wife and mother, I also manage an auto shop together with my husband. Ever since I have always been interested with fashion but it sort of magnified when my son JP Singson returned from the US after living there for several years. He introduced me to a new perspective in dressing. I got more and more fascinated with minimalism and menswear thanks to JP. Since JP blogs and writes for various publications, he oftentimes gets invited to events. He would occasionally tag me along with him. And then, we would play dress-up. That’s when people started noticing our unusual androgynous style, I suppose. I was actually surprised with the overwhelming positive feedback from all sorts of people. And then people mostly beckys (colloquial for gays) started endearingly calling me Lola Androgynous. And the rest was history. After several requests from his friends and random beckys my son finally created my blog to chronicle my outfits.

Where do you usually find your inspiration in pulling off an outfit together? Do you have any style icons? I get inspiration from past collections of my favorite Japanese designers such as Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo. JP has a massive collection of lookbooks, magazines and fashion books which I browse from time to time. I’m particularly obsessed with a french Magazine called Encens which showcases archive pieces from my favorite designers. Style icons... Definitely Tilda Swinton for her sharp and minimalist ensembles.
From what you’re doing, aside from being able to express yourself through blogging and being an inspiration to a lot of people out there what are other things you would like to pass on especially to those who visit and read your blog? To my avid readers thank you for supporting me and my son’s blog. We both appreciate it. Always remember that there’s no age limit when it comes to fashion. Also, don’t take it too seriously. Just go with the flow and have fun with it. When you started the blog, what was your husband’s reaction? My hubby wasn’t surprised at all. He’s actually very supportive. Every once in awhile we’ll bribe him to take photos of me and JP together for our blogs. What are the words you live by, Ms. Tessie? I know “Less is more” is so overused. But I have to say both JP and I are advocates of that adage. You can never upgrade any look by over-accessorizing! Also, one thing that most people ignore is the power of editing your outfit. Sometimes a simple fashion blunder can totally ruin the entire look. So make sure to take a final look at the mirror before you step out of that door.

Who is Karl Leuterio
How long has it been since you started your blog? When and how did it all start? I’ve been blogging since 2008. It started with multiply, then Chictopia then finally in creating a blogspot account. How will you describe your personal style? My personal style is normally androgynous. It varies of course. It can be raw, dirty, glam rock one day and paired-down minimalist on some days. My style has matured, I think. Before I want it loud and dramatic but lately I’ve heavily incorporated the sensibility of wearable clothing.
Do you have any fashion icons? Fashion icons? Rei Kawakubo!!! Where and how do you find inspiration in pulling your outfits together? I am quite photographic so photos largely inspire me in creating a look. It can be a photo of a shoe, an architecture, an old photo of my dad... It’s all about the organic feeling. sometimes, I dress up for the day like if it’s raining or sunny. Usually I dress up in the weekends! I love layering. One clothing isnt enough to get that look! Are there any words of advice you would like to share to our readers who are interested in getting into fashion blogging? I think they dont need my advice. I mean kids nowadays are so innovative and smart that they know what they want for themselves. I am awed that they have blogs and thesis at the same time. I can’t even imagine myself being in their situation. Well, I think they just need to be more original and be brave to be a variety among the crop of bloggers. everyone has a blog now, so the challenge is how to make a blog extra unique and interesting and maybe intellectual... and always: good contents. No to negativity! Lastly, words you live by? Me? Last words? Am I gona die na? chos. BE NICE AND BE WISE!

Day 1 I have always enjoyed walking up the main streets in Melbourne and watching the buskers, and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. He did beautiful, complex drawings in ballpoint pen. A small chat told me that he had recently moved here from Japan to study, and that some of his drawings took him four days to complete. I couldn’t stop myself from buying a postcard. 126

DAY 2 I wasn’t feeling too good. Of course that called for the usual Instagram.
DAY 4 Spent some time after a long at school doing some scanning. I pulled this out a wheel of fortune in a nice little crystal shop in the city. It’s always been relevant. 127
DAY 5 I had a meltdown in the city after being told my camera was broken (though as it turns out, it wasn’t) Liam took me out to dinner anyway.

beyond the reel written by JUAN BERNABE INCIONG
Don’t you sometimes wish that the girl of your dreams would just pop out of your head and into your life? For one man, it did. Ruby Sparks, written by Zoe Kazan, who also plays the title character, Ruby Sparks is a romantic film inspired by the classic myth Pygmalion, Wherein a sculptor falls in love with the statue he created and came to life one day. In the film, famous author Calvin Weir-Fields played by Paul Dano was struggling from severe depression and extreme case of writer’s block. Following the advice of his psychiatrist, he started writing about a quirky, eccentric woman named Ruby Sparks and quickly fell in love with the character. In fact, he was so crazy in love that one morning he woke up and saw her in his kitchen, cooking breakfast. That’s where things start to get interesting. The film plays around the concept of creation. Often times we dream about something that would be a perfect fit to us, our minds catering to our innermost needs and desires. This is especially true for authors, as the characters they write are in some way or form, a reflection of themselves. For Calvin, what he wanted was someone who is more flawed than he is, so that he would be the one who can make her life stable. Even though Ruby is interesting and wacky, what he desires is a lover who would be under his spell no matter what.

When Ruby manifested in Calvin’s reality, the movie explored what would truly happen if your ideals had a life of its own. Here we see a creator’s struggle to keep his work under his control. However, when the creation itself has its own thoughts and emotions, is that truly possible? Well-written supporting characters such as Calvin’s brother Harry, who serves as his anchor to reality, complement the insanity that is the relationship between Calvin and Ruby. The soundtrack is amazing as well, fitting the subtle or lively moods of the scenes. It is interesting to note that most of the tracks are in French, which is considered the language of love.
spectrum of feelings one gets from a love triangle is astounding. A small twitch in the mouth, a quick glance to the side, even the fidgeting of fingers and the biting of nails somehow managed to have more depth than bawling at the camera while crying your eyes out.
In the spirit of the theme of “androgynous” in this issue, let me present a rather interesting film that integrates this concept into one that is both familiar and foreign: love. Les Amours Imaginaires, or Heartbeats is a Canadian French film which tells the story of best friends Marie and Francis as they fall in love with the same man. Throughout the movie, the object of their affection, the charming and handsome Nicolas, remains very neutral, never letting up any favour on one person or the other. Playing out like some sort of masochistic competition, the two subtly try to outdo each other with actions such as giving expensive gifts or “accidentally” meeting him on the street. Pushing the limits of their emotions, as well as their friendship, who will end up victorious? More importantly, will it be worth it?
The biggest appeal of the movie, apart from the talents, is the presentation. It is a splash of sights and sounds done artistically well under the direction of Xavier Dolan. The camera work is very up close and personal, displaying how each minute body movement can say a lot of things. The use of Montreal as the backdrop for the story, as well as the various lighting techniques used, from one-color filters all the way to strobe lights, makes you really glued to the screen, not wanting to miss a beat. The soundtrack is mostly the noise of the city, with a few French songs added here and there, particularly that one French song playing again and again in scenes focused on Marie and Francis. The dialogue comes in short bursts and does not explain itself too well, which reflects the internal struggles of the characters. Combine all of these and you get one fascinating emotional rollercoaster that really makes you think a lot even after the credits roll. With so much going on almost every second, I suggest that you watch this alone or with someone who enjoys art films. This is definitely not a movie for dates or casual gatherings. Keeping those in mind, I recommend Les Amours Imaginaires to anyone who wants to take a closer look into androgynous love.
The film does an amazing job of portraying precise emotions. The actors’ ability to show happiness, anxiety, excitement, and contempt amongst the

People make mistakes, we all do. That’s why somehow, someway, we need to keep searching for that shot at redemption. We need to keep finding that silver lining. Silver Linings Playbook, directed by David O. RusselL, starring The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper and The Hunger Games’ Jennifer Lawrence is a film about trying to find that optimism in the midst to great adversity. The movie begins with Cooper’s character Patrick just released from a mental facility due to nearly killing the man who was having an affair with his wife, Nikki. He is out on a quest to prove that their marriage could renew. However, his bipolar disorder is constantly getting in the way in the form of breakdowns, and his parents, played by Robert de Niro and Jacki Weaver, try their best to help him, although ineffective. When Tiffany, played by Lawrence, a widower who is also trying to fix her life, enters the picture, things start to get chaotic as the two of them try to deal with each other while dealing with their personal struggles. As the tale unfolds, we see them doing their best to solve these together, and possibly be able to save themselves.

Getting your life back on track can be a truly painful ordeal. Sometimes, you really can’t just pick yourself up and move on. Lots of times we struggle and just keep on stumbling. Each time we fall, we ourselves behind everybody else, wish that life could be just the way it was before. This becomes more apparent as we get older, for we are supposed to know what we are doing by that time. This is probably the main reason why it is such a powerful film. It shows you the harsh reality when a person gets utterly devastated by one single event and how that can change everything around you. It also shows that you could always start anew, no matter how old you are or how great your problems cost you. As long as you stay optimistic, you could always find that silver lining, that hope for a brighter tomorrow. If you ever start to think that your life will never be better, go watch Silver Linings Playbook. It’ll make you think twice. Three times, even. I would like to end this article with a quote from the movie, which I think encapsulates all my feelings about it: “There will always be a part of me that is dirty and sloppy, but I like that, just like all the other parts of myself.”

The Androgynous Frogs by Jed Gregorio Luke’s band is playing. They suck but you get a free drink. Someone’s bound to pay up anyway just to get everything going on for longer so it should be fine. I know you’re broke. And there will be pretty girls, not that you should be dating again but, you know, pretty girls boost the morale, you’ll like it. See you there at 10. There’s dinner at my place at 9. Or we’ll pick you up but eat first. Text me. It’s from John. That and seven missed calls, also from him, greet me on my phone when I wake up, maybe about 4 p.m., my bed soaked in sweat. I guess you could say John’s my best friend but he’s irremediably erratic, I’ve given up a long time ago trying to straighten him up. He’s a poet, that is to say he doesn’t have a job. But he’s been published twice and his poems are good. Now I’ve had four free beers and two random drinks someone handed to me. Those could have been poisoned but I’m alive so maybe they’re fine. I’ve never had four beers and two unknown drinks at once so something shitty is going to happen to me soon, I’m sure of it. The band up next is called The Androgynous Frogs. Five guys who actually resemble frogs in the dark. They say their first song is called “Majestic Camelbacks”. Hideous title. Everything here sucks. I am reminded of an online article I read about Androgynous Frogs. At the thought of having read an online article about Androgynous Frogs I might’ve giggled. John is chatting up some girl he just met. Her hair is cropped an unprecise bob. She’s wearing a slip dress, no bra. Her breasts, neither inconsequential nor particularly prominent, are calling out to the world. So John’s listening. I couldn’t remember much from the article, only that frogs and some amphibians change genders when they’re exposed to pollution or radioactive wasteówhether they transform on their own volition or crouch, lie, jump, or sleep helplessly as their bodies betray them in favor of an intrusive phenomenon that nature tolerates, I couldn’t remember exactly, tooóonly that the entire thing is novel, at least to me, and

how civilization would’ve been so messed up if that happened to humans, maybe even for the better, how information on birth certificates and I.D.’s and a bunch of documents we call official need to be updated every so often, how it all doesn’t matter, how being a boy then a girl then a boy then a girl then a boy again is all part of the way things are and no one even notices, how our lungs would have adapted to function by breathing sulfur or some new gas hybrid that caused it all in the first place. John hands me another beer but if I reach for it it will slip from my grip. To wallow in drunkness and a puddle of beer. It feels like a desert inside. I’ve never been to a desert but that’s what it is. Maybe it’s “Majestic Camelbacks”. I go outside and throw up on a potted plant. Maybe I’m not as drunk as I think. I can still read people’s faces and sense their embarrassment. They inhale twice as heavily and puff smoke twice as much, their visions momentarily obscured by a toxic gray cloud. They wouldn’t have to turn their heads to avoid looking at me. I go back in to wash my mouth and my face. I wonder why the water is freezing cold. This bathroom is the hidden oasis in the desert that is this place. Maybe I’m still drunk. I go back outside and sit on the ledge on the sidewalk, not too far away from the poor plant. The street reeks of pukeóeveryone’s. The air is not in any way fresh but it is cooler, less like a desert. “You dropped your cigarettes,” someone says. She’s talking to me, apparently, handing me a half-consumed pack. “You dropped it when you were throwing up on that plant. That one over there,” she points to the plant. “I don’t really smoke,” I say. “What does that mean, not really smoking?” “I don’t know.” “So can I have one?” “Yeah, you can have all of it.” “No, I’m kidding. I don’t smoke.” “Actually, I’ll have one.” I took the pack from her. “Do you mind?” “It is yours, anyway” “Do you have a light?”
159
“I don’t smoke, remember? You can ask them,” she points to a group of guys and girls by the door. “Never mind.” “So what do you think?” She raises both eyebrows, her eyes widen. She sits beside me. “About what?” “Androgynous frogs.” “They’re fine. I mean it’s messed up. Can you imagine? Growing a dick because you inhaled some fumes? But if that’s how things worked anyway I guess it should be normal.” Throughout my talking she never blinked. “What are you talking about?” “I don’t know. You asked me.” “Are you, like, crazy? I mean, not normal? It’s totally fine. I have nothing against people like you. Just asking.” “What are you talking about?” “You were talking about penises. And... fumes?” “You asked me what I thought about Androgynous Frogs.” “Wow.” Now she’s blinking uncontrollably. “The band,” she says, “I meant the band. The Androgynous Frogs? They’re on their ninth song now or something. It’s never going to end. You know them?” “Sorry. Yeah. I mean, no. I don’t know them.” “Good. I can’t stand them,” she pauses, taking a sip of her vodka. “My friend she’s not here she used to date one of them. He’s OK actually. But my friend, she left to study in Finland. It’s crazy, right? I mean, have you ever heard of anyone who went to Finland? Anyway, so it was a bit messy. Their breakup, I mean. They’d talk on Skype and he’ll tell her how he’ll kill himself if she breaks up with him, stuff like that. It’s crazy, right? I mean it’s just not right, threatening people with suicide. But he looks fine now. He’s singing about camels! I hope he doesn’t kill himself. What was that all about, right?” “Yeah.” “Sorry, it’s just crazy I had to tell someone. What’ your band called?” “I’m not in a band. My friend is.” “Ah…” She takes another sip. “The one who played before the Frogs.” “Which one?” “What do you mean?” “Which one’s your friend?” “All of them I guess. One guy, Luke, I’ve known him since high school.” “Who’s Luke?” “The violinist.” “Oh, I remember. He looks nice. I like him.” “You know him?” “No. I just thought he seemed nice. You look alike, I just realized now. Are you brothers? You have the same hair. And it’s funny. People are smoking weed in the walk-in freezer and everyone’s set on getting drunk and you’re throwing up here outside and he’s up there playing the violin. It’s all funny.” “He’s good. He’s been playing since before I knew him. He’s also in an orchestra.” “Where do you live?” I told her where. “You?” She says it’s a forty-minute bus ride.

“Can you take me home? I’m Trixie.” We shake hands. “OK.” I say my name. “Nice to meet you.” “You too.” “So. Now? You need to go home now?” She closes her eyes, tilts her head back, and sighs. “Yeah.” I tell her I have to go back in, just to tell John I’m going ahead. “You can take this back inside,” she says, handing me her empty glass. No one is playing when I enter. Some electronic track plays on loop. I look for John but he is nowhere. I see the girl with the hanging boobs leaning at the end of the bar, maybe waiting for her turn for the bathroom. “Where’s John?” I ask her. “I don’t know. He disappeared.” “Great.” I text him instead. Where the hell are you? I’m leaving, don’t wait for me. In a jiffy John calls. “DON’T GO FUCKING SOME GIRL!!! YOU’RE NOT READY!!! AND WE HAVE THAT THING TOMORROW! DON’T NOT SHOW UP!!!” It sounds like he’s calling from a quiet place but he’s screaming. He hangs up before I say anything. The girl looks at me with an expectant gaze, as if hoping for me to update her about John’s whereabouts and his long-term goals. Someone comes out from the bathroom, the girl hops off from the bar stool and disappears. Another band takes the stage. “We’re The Bureaucrats,” says the vocalist, winking at someone in the audience. “Our first song is called ëBaby Burn Down City Hall.” The bus ride isn’t forty minutes. It has been more than an hour now. In the bus no one speaks. Neither the two of us nor the other passengers, there are maybe six others. Six since we boarded, no one has gotten off the bus. Suddenly Trixie turns her head to me. For a while I thought she’s staring at my ear. She’s looking out the window. “Do you see that?” she says, pointing to my left. I look out and see smoke in the distance. “Somethingís burning,” she says. The smoke is thick and it’s swelling into the sky. The bus gets off the main road, beats a red light, and speeds past what looks like a condemned tenement. Its facade had been demolished to shreds, revealing a courtyard. Clotheslines are haphazardly installed on a cluster of dead trees. The smoke is still visible from afar. Trixie lives in a two-story apartment. “I rent it for nothing,” she says, “The landlady’s very, very old and she doesn’t know anything about real estate prices of this century. She’s really nice. And sweet. I volunteer to do her groceries every two weeks. Anyway, let’s go upstairs. Barbie doesn’t like visitors. She’ll chew your leg off. She’s a demented dog, but she sleeps instantly after she eats. You’ll see why I named her Barbie. She’s Carolyn Bessette Kennedy who turned into a dog.”
161
Barbie is a Labrador Retriever puppy covered in a singular shade of platinum fur. She sleeps on a makeshift dog bed, a low tufted ottoman ridden with odd streaks of green stain, placed at the foot of the narrow staircase opposite the door. “Obviously youíre not going home,” Trixie says as we go up the stairs. “It’s too late. And there are no buses at this time.” “Right,” I say. Trixieís room is lit by a fuzzy light that registers as a defeated blue the moment one’s eyes are exposed to it. Soon the eyes adapt, the light reminds me of illness and a cold Christmas. Trixie sits on her bed, I sit on the chair beside the dresser. On her bedside table she keeps a wilted rose propped up by an empty bottle of San Pellegrino, The Private Lives of the Impressionists, and a tube of sunscreen. Trixie rests her shoulder on the headboard. She’s skinny and she looks frail, her body easily half the width of the average of everyone I’ve ever met. Did she learn how to eat just a year ago? Her skin is luminous. Her hair, long and with limp waves, turns a translucent amber when it catches the light. She looks at me, her eyebrows are pale and her eyes are drowsy, as she takes off her clothes. At 8 a.m. Trixie wakes me up. I slept for less than three hours. I don’t know if Trixie slept at all. I see my clothes are folded on the chair beside the dresser. “Do you do that a lot?” I ask her. “Which? Sleep with strangers or fold the clothes of strangers I sleep with?” I laugh. She continues, “No to both. It just looks so messy. I have this huge T-shirt I got from someone handing them out at the train station. I’ll give it to you.” “Thanks.” “You should eat,” she says. There’s a bowl of Fruit Loops and milk on the bedside table. I notice the wilted rose is gone. She continues, ìIt shouldnít be soggy. I just made it now.” “Thanks again.” “I’ll just go give Barbie breakfast. The bathroom’s outside, the second door on the right. If you need to.” Trixie exits the room. She’s wearing red track shorts and a tank top. I finish the bowl of Fruit Loops. I remember I didn’t eat anything yesterday. I get my clothes on the chair and feel for my phone in my jean pocket. One message: “Hey, what are you up to today? I miss you. I’m off at work today early. Call me if you can pass by. I really miss you.” I hit reply and type FUCK YOU but I decide not to send it. The blue light has dissipated into the corners of the room’s white walls.
