Kegiatan ENTEX 2010 (East Nusa Tenggara Expo) dan Sail Indonesia 2010 pada akhir July 2010 kemarin diharapkan dapat menjadi kegiatan promosi tujuan pariwisata di Nusa Tenggara Timur. Keterlibatan semua elemen masyarakat dalam mempromosikan Objek Daya Tarik Wisata dan hasil kerajinan khas NTT hendaknya bisa terus kita tingkatkan.
A lot has been happening in our region of Indonesia recently – especially related to tourism and the promotion of the attractions here. Sail Indonesia and the more than 110 yachts that departed Darwin for the archilelago arrived in Kupang late in July where the crews were treated to the hosptaility of the NTT in the form of a gala dinner that coincided with ENTEX 2010 (East Nusa Tenggara Expo). From Kupang the yachts move on to many of the other idyllic island ports that make Sail Indonesia such a popular world famous yachting event.
Pada tanggal 4 Agustus 2010, TransNusa Air Services genap berusia 5 tahun. Rasa syukur dan bahagia ini kami bagikan dengan masyarakat di Labuan Bajo. TransNusa menggelar Pesta Rakyat yang dimeriahkan dengan pertunjukan tradisional dan modern, serta pembagian sembako dan beasiswa kepada masyarakat dan anak-anak berprestasi. Labuan Bajo merupakan salah satu kota di ujung barat Flores, dekat kepulauan Komodo, yang perkembangannya sangat pesat. Merupakan fakta bahwa dengan adanya akses yang mudah, akan membuat perkembangan bisnis dan pariwisata di daerah timur Indonesia bertambah maju. Majalah TransNusa Inflight terus memberikan cerita dan gambar-gambar spektakuler yang ada di daerah NTT dan NTB yang dapat menunjukkan bahwa banyak sekali pilihan menarik bagi wisatawan yang berkunjung ke daerah ini. Majalah ini menulis tentang Tanjung Ringgit - daerah pesisir Lombok yang spektakuler, terletak sekitar empat jam dari Mataram dengan sejarah uniknya. Penulis juga ingin berbagi pengalamannya dalam kunjungan ke barat selatan Sumbawa. Bagi Anda yang tidak ingin terjebak dalam hujan, mungkin berlibur ke kepuan Gili Lombok adalah jawabannya.
We at TransNusa also had something to celebrate – we are now five years old! And to celebrate this event we staged a party in Labuan Bajo, one of the fastest growing towns at the western tip of Flores, close to Komodo. The fact that many of the guests came from an area that was once quite remote, is an indication that we are becoming successful in making it possible for business and tourism to access more of the east of Indonesia. The TransNusa inflight magazine continues to provide insights and pictures from the spectacular NTB and NTT area and shows that aside from the well-known areas there are many attractive options for travelers. The magazine writes about Tanjung Ringgit – a specatular coastal area of lombok located about four hours from Mataram with a unique history. It also shows how exciting a visit to the south west of Sumbawa can be – it has to be one of Indonesia’s main adventure attractions. For those of you not wanting to get caught in the rain, perhaps a vacation on the Gilis of Lombok is the answer – our writer decides that’s where sunshine spends the rainy season. Do have a nice flight and enjoy your time in the east of Indonesia!

Pertama kali saya mendengar Tanjung Ringgit, secara otomatis saya membayangkan Malaysia dan mata uangnya. Mengapa dinamakan Ringgit? Apakah karena perang dunia kedua memaksa para buruh dibayar dalam Ringgit atau karena banyak pekerja Lombok yang telah bekerja di Malaysia guna mencari uang dan kembali ke daerah tersebut sehingga mereka menamakan Ringgit? itu hanya spekulasi dari saya. Hal utama adalah nama tersebut yang membuat saya tertarik untuk melihat tempat ini dan inilah yang akan saya bicarakan.
When I first heard about Tanjung Ringgit. I automatically thought of Malaysia and its currency. So why was the place I was headed for called Tanjung Ringggit? Was it because many of the second world war forced laborers were paid in Ringgit or was it because many Lombok workers who have worked in Malaysia and have returned call the area after the currency they have worked so hard to obtain? Anyway that is just speculation on my part. The main thing is it got me interested in seeing the place and that is what I’m going to talk about.
Tanjung Ringgit terletak sekitar 75 kilometer dari Mataram, membutuhkan waktu ± 2 jam untuk sampai ke sana. Jalan ke Tanjung Ringgit bergelombang dan berlubang, sangat sulit untuk menghindarinya tetapi dengan panorama yang sangat spektakuler, jalan yang kami lalui sedikit terlupakan. Air laut nya membiru, teluk yang luas dan berpasir putih membuat Anda serasa ingin melompat untuk berenang. Tidak terlalu jauh melintasi bentangan air tampak Pulau Sumbawa, begitu dekat seolah-olah Anda dapat menjangkau dan menyentuhnya.
Tanjung Ringgit is about 75 kilometers from Mataram and it took us about 2 hours to get there. The road to Tanjung Ringgit is bumpy; it’s difficult avoiding the many potholes but when you get close to Tanjung Ringgit so spectacular is the panoramic view that you forget those holes altogether. Blue waters, wide bays and white sand make you feel like jumping in the water for a swim. Not too far away across an expanse of water is Sumbawa Island, so close you feel as if you can reach out and touch it. Mind you I was still looking for those Ringgits.
Bukan hanya pemandangan indah yang ada di Tanjung Ringgit, tempat ini memiliki nilai bersejarah, dimana pada jaman perang Dunia II digunakan oleh tentara Jepang untuk mempertahankan jalur laut. Buktinya, saya menemukan beberapa meriam dan gua-gua persembunyian mereka yang digunakan untuk menyimpan amunisi.
But it’s not just the beautiful scenery of Tanjung Ringgit that is an attraction, it’s also the fact that it was once a place used by the occupying Japanese forces where they positioned themselves to defend the important sea lanes. Evidence of this I hoped to find in the form of canons and the caves they used for storing ammunition.

Oleh karena itu ketika saya tiba di Tanjung Ringgit hal pertama yang saya lihat adalah meriam. Setelah satu jam berkeliling, saya menemukan satu meriam besar yang tersembunyi di rerumputan panjang, tidak terawat dan sendiri. Hal lain lagi, meriam sekarang panjangnya hanya 3 meter, dipotong dari aslinya 5 meter oleh penduduk setempat di daerah itu. Memerlukan waktu 3 bulan untuk memotong sebuah meriam tersebut, yang menggambarkan betapa kuatnya produk Jepang ini. Seiring barel tua yang berjajar terlintas kepedihan yang tergambar, “Saya hanya sepotong baja tua yang meninggalkan banyak sejarah”.
Therefore on arrival at Tanjung Ringgit the first thing I see about searching for was canons. After an hour or so I found a large canon hiding in some long grass, uncared for and alone. Another thing, the canon is now only 3 meters in length, cut from its original 5 meters by the locals of the area, a cutting that took three months - such was the density and strength of that good Japanese steel. Along the barrel is somehow poignantly written “I am only an old piece of steel with a lot of history”. On the right hand side and behind the canon I could see a few entrances to caves that were all sadly covered by fallen earth and dry grass.

Di sisi kanan dan belakang meriam, saya melihat beberapa pintu masuk ke gua yang tampak menyeramkan ditutupi oleh semak belukar dan rumput kering. Menurut penduduk setempat gua tersebut terhubung satu sama lain, seperti sebuah sarang semut’! saya dapat membayangkan betapa sulitnya mereka membuat gua tersebut. Anda juga dapat menemukan pintu masuk gua-raksasa yang berdiameter ¹ 8 meter, (digunakan sebagai tempat persembunyian) dan di sebelahnya sebuah gua yang lebih kecil yang memancarkan aroma sulfur yang kuat. Mereka mengatakan dua gua tersebut terhubung dan jika Anda berani masuk lebih dalam lagi, Anda akan sampai ke dasar laut. Tidak siap untuk menjelajahi gua yang saya ketahui cukup membahayakan, terutama tanpa cahaya, saya memutuskan untuk tidak memasukinya.

According to the locals those caves are connected to one another, just like an ants’ nest! I wonder too how difficult it must have been to make them. You can also find a giant cave-entrance almost eight metres in diameter, (used as a hiding place) and next to it a smaller cave that emits a strong aroma of sulphur. They say the two caves are connected and if you dare to go in you can find your way to the bottom of the ocean. Not being prepared for cave exploration which I know can sometimes be dangerous, especially without light, I decided not to go in but to stick to my original task looking for those Ringgits! There is however one cave that I managed to enter. Not too deep it leads directly down a short marble stair-case and out onto a ledge on the

With the caves, canons and ‘coins’ I feel that because the place is so historical and inspiring it should be cared for in a better way. Others might say let the past be, but the fact is we can’t ignore history and history is indeed what was made on the cliffs of Tanjung Ringgit.

Don’t let the name put you off. That’s right –I thought it was going to be an Indonesian restaurant! It’s Belgian and it refers to the little fellow with the little fellow. And don’t worry about it being Belgian – they have more varieties of beer than anywhere else in the world and they invented French fries – credentials not to be treated lightly - which they call Belgian fries (not chips). And I now realize that those Belgians prepare seriously good food – or should I say exceptionally good. Affable Yannic and Alice (the footstomping, handclapping, music loving, owners of the place) mentioned in passing that many consider they have best steaks on the island. They do. And then there is the music to match. Mannekepis seems to have become the unofficial converging point for some of the best musicians in Bali. Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday night the place rocks and pumps…or whatever you’d like to call it when blues and jazz lovers get it on. It’s entertainment while you eat. The menu has regular dishes like steak, nachos, Caesar salads, many varieties of fish but also some other tantalizing items that (again!) must be originally Belgian or belong to the personal collection of Yannic and Alice. Check out Belgische Stovers which is a traditional Belgium beef stew flavoured with dark beer served with homemade Belgium fries and salad - a stew that actually has taste! Or the Prawn Fettucinni ‘Mannekepis with black tiger prawns and Sauce ‘Mannekepis’ – a secret recipe known only to the creator, Yannic, consisting of Tomato, Cream, Ricard, and Mannekepis Spices. Or if you’re hunting for a salad there’s the Crottin Chauvignol made up of caramelized goat cheese, honey, mixed greens, raspberry vinaigrette, garnished with strawberries. So there you have a brief description of an outstanding venue any fun loving visitor to Bali should consider for a great night out. Trust me you won’t be disappointed. Better book your reservation as the place can be fairly crowded early in the evening. Or do what I sometimes do – sit and eat at the bar. Right in the heart of Seminyak, Mannekepis presents a new concept - ‘fun’ dining.

While it is famous for its prehistoric reptiles and now one of the 28 Finalists for inclusion as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, Komodo on the island of Flores has a number of other potential tourism attractions of spectacular natural beauty.

Trekking to the top of Mbeliling is very enjoyable and not so difficult taking only three or four hours. The natural forest with its unique vegetation is there for all to see at a brisk altitude of 1200 metres above sea level.
One of them is Mbeliling Forest, an area with a unique ecosystem and culture that make it a place very worthwhile visiting. It is one of the main natural resources for the inhabitants in and around the Labuan Bajo area.
Birdwatchers will be excited to know that on the trek in the forest they might be lucky enough to see three endemic Flores birds: Kehicap Flores (Monarcha sacerdotum), Hanging parrot Flores (Loriculus flosculus), and Flores Crow (Corvus florensis) which population are getting less and less.
The exploration usually starts by setting out from the village of Liang Ndara as the first stopover and trekking to Mbeliling peak to experience the beauty of waterfalls and birds endemic in the village of Ro’e.

Unique Culture One of the cultural highlights of a visit to the region is to experience the culture of Manggarai and its Caci dance attractions. For the people of Manggarai, the dance is a ritual that cannot be separated from life. The dance, performed by men is a symbol of valor and bravery. Unique also to the area is the tradition of drinking Toak or called “Sopi�, which is a strong alcoholic beverage, obtained from palm trees. Duduk termenung, pengaruh kopi yang kuat terasa seiring dengan semilir angin, saya memandang keseberang laut yang gemerlap Gili Meno, sebuah pulau yang berjarak hanya 500 meter dan bertanya-tanya dimanakah saya harus berada. Tidak ada yang terbersit dalam pikiran, hanya perasaan puas, saya memandang meja di depan dan perut mulai keroncongan ketika mata mulai mengamati menu santap pagi.
Sitting quietly, the essence of strong coffee rich in the breeze, I gaze across a sparkling sea to Gili Meno, an island only 500 metres away and wonder where else I’d rather be. Transport from your arrival point in Denpasar Bali or Mataram, the capital of Lombok, is fully catered for by local transport companies, it’s quick, easy and cheap. The short boat trip 25 minutes from Lombok is all you hear of a motor, as there are no motorized vehicles of any kind on the islands, something you can only truly appreciate when you travel back to the mainland and hear your first screaming scooter, as I did recently. I returned to the island some 3 hours later, grateful for the peace and quiet.

Fabulous food abounds, Indonesian delights of Gado-Gado or Mie Goreng, spicy Thai, Burettes, Pizzas if you wish, fish galore and pasta too. The beauty of Gill Trawangan is not the western food nor the flashy hotels, not even the great traditional Indonesian food or basic accommodation. It’s the availability of both, the amalgamation of western and eastern cultures side by side. After 21 days enjoying some very basic Indonesian accommodation and food, which is exactly what I was looking for, I felt a need for a slight change. For those of you with a more active frame of mind, snorkeling and diving are the main attractions. There is a good selection of dive shops, some with PADI 5 star ratings (dives start at $38 US)and most of the Rumah Makans hiring out basic masks and snorkels for about 10,000 rupiah ($2 US). Indonesia has the largest variety of fish species on earth so no shortage of brilliantly coloured marine life, though the corals have been badly affected due to past blasting, storm damage and bleaching.

A walk around Gill Trawangan will take you about an hour and a half, longer if you choose to linger at some of the more secluded little beaches. Bring a Frisbee or hand-bats and ball as there is no shortage of exuberant locals who are only too happy to wile away the hours. Apart from that don’t expect to do much else.Perhaps catch a movie and a drink at one of the rumah makans or pubs at night. The Gill Islands are relaxation personified.

Dalam sebuah kunjungan ke Maluk dan Sekongkang wilayah selatan-barat Sumbawa, penulis kami menemukan kebenaran dalam pepatah kuno “semua yang gemerlap bukan berarti emas”. In a visit to the Maluk and Sekongkang area of south-west Sumbawa, our writer finds truth in the old saying “all that glitters is not gold”.
Tepat ketika saya berpikir telah merasakan hal terbaik yang ditawarkan Lombok dan Sumbawa, Chris Keleher datang ke kantor kami, dengan meluap-luap bercerita sambil berkata “Ayo ke pantai barat daya Sumbawa kamu pasti akan berubah pikiran “. Dia menawarkan perjalanan, menggunakan speedboat menyebrang selat Alas yang memisahkan Lombok dari Sumbawa, daerah itu memang memiliki cincin petualangan, dan ketika ia menunjukkan beberapa foto yang menggambarkan garis pantai yang luar biasa, saya langsung berkata, let’s do it “.
Just when I thought I had tasted the best that was on offer on Lombok and Sumbawa, effervescent Chris Keleher came bubbling into the office with an arm-twisting “C’mon over to the south-west coast of Sumbawa and maybe you’ll change you mind”. His offer that included a trip in his speedboat across the Alas Straits that slice Lombok from Sumbawa, did have a ring of adventure to it; and when he showed me some pix of the dramatic coastline, I said ‘what the hell, let’s do it”.
Tapi tunggu dulu, coba jawab satu atau dua pertanyaan ini, jika memang bagus mengapa tidak ada seorang penulis menulis tentang tempat itu? Jawabnya: Newmont! Usaha pertambangan besar. Wilayah Sumbawa telah terkenal untuk alasan yang salah - saya kira Anda bisa menyebutnya terkenal dengan tambangnya - dan beberapa alasan-alasan itu mengapa saya secara pribadi tidak pernah mau repot-repot pergi ke sana. Berapa banyak dari eko-wisata yang ingin berkunjung ke daerah yang dekat dengan tambang emas dan tembaga. Yang diperkirakan adalah tempat kosong, tanpa pepohonan, penuh bahan galian dan polusi. Bar-bar yang dipenuhi para pekerja dan buruh tambang, tidak…itu bukan saya kawan!
But let’s answer a question or two first. If it’s so good why hasn’t anymore else been waxing lyrical about the place? The answer: Newmont - the huge, mining joint venture. The area of Sumbawa we’re talking about has so far been famous for all the wrong reasons – I guess you call that being infamous – and a few of those reasons were why I’d personally never bothered to go over there. How many eco-tourism-minded vigilantes want to go anywhere near a huge gold and copper mine. It’s assumed without even checking that the whole area must be a wasteland of felled trees, excavated earth and polluting waste. Throw in a bar full of red-neck miners and well, shucks, not me fella!

Laut dengan tebing besar dan curam, menopang hingga ke dalam lautan yang dindingnya ditumbuhi dengan berbagai macam biota laut merupakan sarang bagi ikan-ikan - ingat bahwa diluar sana adalah Samudera Hindia dan di perairan yang dilindungi oleh kapal patroli Newmont - pemboman atau meracun ikan tidak diperbolehkan. Sehingga banyak sekali jenis ikan berkembang biak diperairan ini, yang jelas merupakan tempat memancing yang strategis. Saya melihat orang sedang memegang erat kailnya bertahan melawan ikan besar Travelly – (yang biasa sering disebut GT’s) atau kakap merah. Dan semua ini hanya dua ratus meter jauhnya dari tepi pantai.
They all fit snugly into a coastline that is as spectacular and majestic as any you all ever come across; one day it just might be promoted as Indonesia’s Rio, you wait and see. The seas off the huge cliffs and buttresses that plunge into the ocean nurse game fish that are just waiting to latch on to a plug – remember that it’s an Indian Ocean out there and what’s more the waters are protected by a Newmont Mine patrol boat – no fish bombing or poisoning allowed. Consequently there’s a glut of fish. How else can I explain hooking a fighting Blue Trevally on my first ever attempt at a cast. That too was after watching a fight with a Giant Trevally – (everyone over there calls them GT’s) and an equally large (later to be sashimied) red snapper. And all this only

Di Super Suck, memiliki ombak terbesar di Indonesia, hingga membentuk left breaking barel yang menggulung dan menghempas karang sejauh ratusan meter. Para pelancong datang baik melalui udara, darat maupun menggunakan kapal dari Bali dan Jakarta. Tetapi dari apa yang saya lihat, orang-orang yang melalui darat dan kapal merupakan peselancar terbaik. Satu hal yang selalu ada di Yo Yo adalah gelombang, ketika semua yang lain adalah danau, Yo Yo masih dapat diandalkan untuk melakukan hal-hal tersebut. Dan ketika Yo Yo membesar, berhati-hatilah jangan sampai menciutkan nyali Anda. two hundred yards or more accurately within sight and earshot of a resort restaurant and bar! The coral is exquisite – mostly right off the beaches – again no bombing or spearfishing takes place and the fish will eat right out of your hands. Resident divers of the area have been spoiled for too long and will soon have to share their underwater space with visitors from another planet – a planet of crowds, damaged coral and depleted fish life. And of course there’s the surf some of the most consistent and spectacular barrels and take-offs in Indonesia. Legendary breaks like Super Suck, Scar Reef and Yo Yo’s invite surfers into their barrels of liquid fun. Of Super Suck “Surfing Indonesia” says it has some of the thickest lips (wave!) in Indonesia forming a left-breaking barrel that bowls and winds down the reef for a few hundred meters. Arrivals make there way both overland and by boat from as far afield as Bali and Jakarta. But from what I saw those that were staying in the area on land were getting much the better of the surf. The boaties – bring your own crowds – meanwhile were cooped up for long hours on their

News from Kupang: Kupang merupakan persinggahan pertama Sail Indonesia 2010, sebelum menyinggahi daerah-daerah lain. Acara tahunan ini diselenggarakan oleh Yayasan Cinta Bahari Indonesia (YCBI) yang diketuai Oleh Bpk Raymond Lesmana. Diikuti oleh 65 peserta dari 15 negara. Pada persinggahan pertama ini, para peserta Sail Indonesia disambut dengan suka cita oleh seluruh masyarakat Kupang. Dinas Kebudayaan & pariwisata NTT, menggelar gala diner bagi para peserta Sail Indonesia 2010, yang dibuka oleh Drs. Fransiskus Salem MSi (SEKDA NTT) menyuguhkan hidangan serta hiburan khas daerah NTT. Selain itu pula,

2010 Sail Indonesia’s first stop for 65 yachts from 15 counties was Kupang, and what a welcome the sailors received from the people of NTT’s capital city. This annual event is presented by the Yayasan Cinta Bahari Indonesia (YCBI) lead by Raymond Lesmana and followed by 65 yachts from 15 countries. A Gala Dinner was laid out by The Department of Tourism and Culture Drs. Fransiskus Salem MSi gave the all-important welcome speech.

Di kedua lokasi persinggahan ini mereka akan disambut dengan kegiatan budaya, festival termasuk upacara penyambutan, dan tour dari tanggal 3-6 Agustus. Sebelum melanjutkan pelayaran ke Lembata dan Ende di Flores, sekitar 20 Yacths diharapkan berlayar ke pulau Rote dan beberapa dari mereka menuju Sumba dan pulau Sabu, sisanya menuju ke Alor.

The sailors were very taken with the proceedings, joining in all the activities enthusiastically. They participated in social activities by visiting orphanages to provide support and assistance in their endeavors to provide a safe and secure life for children in their care.

The yachts would soon leave Kupang for their next destination –either the town of Baa on Rote Island or the town of Kalabahi on Alor. On both locations their arrival will be welcomed with ceremonial events as well as cultural festivities. Before leaving for the next route like Lembata and Ende on Flores, about 20 Yachts are expected to be heading to Rote and the others will head up to Sumba and Savu Island, while the remaining bunch will go to Alor.

Fidelis Pranda, Kapolres Manggarai Barat Bpk Syamsuri dan hampir seluruh penduduk di Labuan Bajo, yang didukung oleh para sponsor. Acara ini diadakan di Halaman Paroki Gereja Roh Kudus yang terletak 10 menit dari Bandara Komodo. Tepat pukul 09:00, drum berkumandang tanda acara dimulai, dengan upacara adat Manggarai yang kemudian diikuti dengan tarian Caci, merupakan daya tarik yang luar biasa. tidak hanya itu, pembagian doorprize yang diselingi live musik band lokal hingga jam 3 sore untuk menghibur masyarakat sekitar dengan lantunan lagu-lagu lokal dan modern. Pada usianya yang ke 5, TransNusa Airservises ingin berbagi kebahagian kepada segenap masyarakat di Labuan Bajo dengan cara membagi-bagikan sembako kepada keluarga kurang mampu sebanyak 500 kepala keluarga di 5 desa yang tersebar di Labuan Bajo dan 2 panti asuhan.Serta menyerahkan beasiswa kepada 18 siswa/siswi berprestasi di seluruh Kabupaten Manggarai Barat yaitu : Desa Batu Cermin, Kelurahan Wae Kelambu, Desa Gorontalo, Kelurahan Labuan Bajo, Desa Golo Bilas dan Panti Asuhan st. Attended by the head of West Manggarai Regency (West Flores) Drs. Fidelis Pranda, Police Dept.Chief, Bpk Syamsuri and the people of Labuan Bajo, the event was held in the yard of the Labuan Bajo Church Paroki Roh Kudus, located just 10 minutes away from the airport (Bandara Komodo). It was supported by companies recently established and operating in Labuan Bajo. At 9.00 am, a loud drum along with the traditional Caci dance signalled the beginning of the event. The costumes, music and style were remarkable. That was not all, live bands playing local and modern hits entertained the public along with door prizes until 3pm. At the age of five, TransNusa Air Services wanted to share their happiness with the entire community in Labuan Bajo by distributing gifts of food and other essentials to 500 families from 5 villages as well as two orphanages spread across Labuan Bajo. The company also handed over scholarships to 18 students from elementary-junior-high school in Labuan Bajo. Labuan Bajo is one of TransNusa Air Services main destinations. This small growing city provides facilities for travelers wanting to visit and discover Komodo and the surrounding area.
