WINES + SPIRITS

Chateau Lafite 1869 - $230,000 At a 2010 auction, the Chateau Lafite 1869 sold for a record $230,000 and it was several times over the price it was expected to fetch. At the Hong Kong auction, an anonymous bidder bought not one but three bottles of Château Lafite at that price. Not surprising since this is another Rothschild bottle.

Chateau Margaux 1787 - $225,000 An interesting tale and the history around cements its place on our list. It is not so fortunate as the other ones on this list and the reason is that, while it was valued at $500,000, the collector took it to dinner and a waiter broke it. The insurers only paid $225,000.

Chateau Lafite 1787 - $156,450 It was sold at an auction for $156,000 in 1985 and was owned by Thomas Jefferson. The wine has been clouded in mystery about its authenticity having the initials of Thomas Jefferson. However, it that historical significance that drove up its value. This wine was not bought to be consumed but as a collectible.

Ampoule from Penfolds - $168,000 The handblown glass ampoule was the result of creating a special storage for this rare wine. Penfolds’ 2004 Kalimna Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon is less about wine and more of an art form in itself. It is one of the most expensive wines but also one that looks stunning along with having one of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines.

Henri Jayer, Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux 1999 - $136,955 Produced in France’s Burgundy wine region, this wine collection sold for $136,955 at a Hong Kong wine sale. Hence, the sale being for not just a bottle but for an entire case makes this more of a bargain than the others on the list. The lot was for 12 bottles.

Cheval Blanc St Emilion 1947 $135,125 This is one of the finest Cheval Blanc and also one of the best clarets. Plus, this vintage has been given Class A status in the Classification of Saint-Emilion wine. Only 110,000 bottles have been produced and that makes it a bit of a rarity as even less survive to this day. It has been lauded by experts for its flavor and texture.
