2024 MERCEDES-BENZ

GLS 600 MAYBACH | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

T

he Mercedes-Maybach brand has been about luxury, and the GLS Maybach SUV is ready for success. The car-maker has refreshed the luxury SUV and the rest of the GLS range. The Maybach always had an upright, authoritative stance led by its chrome grille, while the 2024 version gets some tweaks based on that. While the prominent chrome-lined grille remains, there is a radar that sticks out on the grille now. That said, most changes were to the lower bit. Vertical chrome bars and the “Maybach” lettering are the stand-out features of the new radiator grille. The air inlet grilles feature a Maybach pattern and a chrome surround. A 23-inch forged wheel in a typical Maybach design with a forged wheel bolt cover is new to the options list and looks like the V12 version of the Maybach S-Class. Another new standard feature is ambient lighting with animated projection of the Maybach pattern. The Maybach boasts a new design for the seat covers, creating a stylish contemporary interior. The center sections of the seat surfaces and backrests now feature diamond-pattern quilting with detailed perforations. The color combinations MANUFAKTUR crystal white/silver grey pearl and MANUFAKTUR mahogany brown/ macchiato beige are exclusively offered for the interior of the Maybach. Two USB ports (optional equipment) come with 100 W output in the rear of the center console. With the optional MBUX Multi-Seat Entertainment system, rear-seat occupants experience the same comprehensive range of infotainment and comfort features as those in the front. Backseat occupants can use up to three touchscreens and various intuitive control options, such as the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant. There is also a newly designed steering wheel with new touch controls. The powertrain remains the same, with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and an electric motor with an extra 22 hp over the 557hp of the V8 engine. Of course, the E-Active Body Control remains with its bounce mode. The new Mercedes-Maybach GLS will hit the roads later this year.

WINES + SPIRITS

SIR ROD STEWART & WHISKY | BY KEVIN PILLEY

He has sold over 250 million records worldwide, and now Sir Rod Stewart is selling his own peaty, warming cinnamon, fresh vanilla, and baked apple whiskey in the UK & Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Made at the Loch Lomond distillery, the 40% ABV Wolfie’s Whiskey is a blended whiskey that embodies a reputation as ‘the Cockney Scotsman’ and pays tribute to his Scottish heritage and cheeky chappie image. It is designed to reflect Rod’s rock ‘n’ roll heritage with subtle nods to Americana. Wolfie’s was inspired by the legendary musician’s early hell-raising days with the Faces. “Wolfie’s is a rascal of a thing, and with just a sip, the whiskey takes you back to the good old days. Fine-tuned and perfectly balanced, Wolfie’s is a delight both over ice and mixed into a favorite cocktail,” rasps Sir Rod. “It’s a fine tipple, whether you’re partying with friends, celebrating a Celtic win, or reminiscing with family. For me, Wolfie’s depicts the carefree behavior of my more mischievous days and the excitement of what life still has to offer—let the good times roll!” Referencing the opening track from Rod’s 1991 album Vagabond Heart, the lyrics Rhythm of My Heart are emblazoned on the base of the bottle. Rod’s recording of the song was a nod to his Scottish heritage, having adapted the melody from the traditional folk song Loch Lomond. Wolfie’s will be available to buy online for £35 from Monday, June 19, and in the meantime, fans are encouraged to sign up at www.wolfiesiscoming.com to access an exclusive presale from Friday, June 16. They’ll also be in for the chance of finding one of 1,000 bottles of Wolfie’s that were by Sir Rod. With the initial limited run of bottles marked as first releases, Wolfie’s will initially be available to buy online across the UK and Europe before launching in America in July as Rod embarks on his North American tour.  17 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

CARLA GUILHEM

Navigating Dream Spaces Beyond The Surface | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS LADY LENE IMAGES BY YACHTSHOT

With her forte in crafting luxury yacht interiors, Carla Guilhem speaks with Upscale Living magazine about what it takes to create one-of-a-kind residences on the water and bringing yachting dreams to life. Carla, tell us a bit about yourself. I grew up in São Paulo and later pursued my studies in design in Italy and Spain. My international experiences shaped my design philosophy, blending cultural influences with a passion for creating spaces that evoke strong sensations and enrich the human experience. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? Growing up, my family had a millwork and furniture company, and I spent much of my youth helping and exploring the art of craftsmanship. This environment cultivated my curiosity and gave me a profound understanding of what lies hidden beneath the obvious. I learned to appreciate the intricate details and the creative process that goes into making beautiful pieces. This early exposure not only shaped my love for design but also honed my ability to see beyond the surface, to recognize the potential in materials and spaces, and to create designs that resonate with both function and emotion. It was a formative experience that laid the foundation for my career, guiding me toward a path where creativity, curiosity, and care for the craft are at the core of everything I do. Please talk us through your creative process when it comes to the interior design of yachts. The creative process for interior yacht design begins with a deep understanding of my clients’ goals and dreams. I strive to connect with their visions and emotions, absorbing insights that will guide the entire design journey. From there, I gather inspiration from a rich tapestry of contexts, ranging from nature and material science to art, music, and fashion. These diverse influences allow me to approach the design from a multifaceted perspective, enriching the final concept with layers of meaning and beauty. Understanding the use and desired functionality of all spaces is paramount. By analyzing the flow, purpose, and unique requirements of each area, I can craft solutions that are both aesthetically stunning and practically efficient. Whether it’s creating social spaces that foster connection 26 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

or private retreats that offer tranquility, the design must respond to the unique rhythm of life onboard. Collaboration with shipyard professionals, engineers, and artisans is essential, as it ensures that the design is realized with precision and quality. From selecting the right materials to crafting custom furniture with integrated storage, every detail is carefully considered and executed. Finally, the process evolves into a harmonious blend of form and function, where colors, textures, lighting, and spatial arrangements come together to create an environment that resonates with the client’s identity and aspirations. The ultimate goal is to create a space where the owners can live in the reality they have imagined, experiencing sensations that are uniquely tailored to their desires. It’s a journey of discovery, creativity, and collaboration, where every project presents new challenges and opportunities to create something truly one-of-a-kind. Has there been an increase in clients wanting to create ‘residences on the water’ and if so, why do you think that is? Yes, the allure of ‘residences on the water’ has increased. People are drawn to the unique sensations of freedom, adventure, and serenity that only a yacht can offer. The flowing interiors and the connection with the water bring a new dimension to living spaces, something I love to explore in my designs. How do you create one-of-a-kind spaces for yachts? I craft unique spaces by understanding the client’s lifestyle and how they wish to experience the space. For instance, I designed a lounge area on one yacht with bespoke furnishings that allowed for multiple configurations, ensuring adaptability and personal connection. How do you manage to turn a yacht into a home? By integrating design elements that enhance comfort and a sense of belonging. In a recent project, I used natural fabrics and textures to bring the homely sensation, ensuring that the yacht was not just a vessel, but a living space filled with character. How do you maximize what is essentially limited and premium space on a yacht? Maximizing space on a yacht requires innovative thinking and collaboration with the shipyard and engineers. By designing custom furniture that includes storage space and creating layouts that make efficient use

of every square inch, we can achieve a sense of openness and luxury even within the confined space of a yacht. One example is the incorporation of storage within the bed frames, which provides additional functionality without compromising aesthetics. How important are color choices? Color choices are paramount in creating the desired ambiance. In one of my recent projects, I utilized a mute, calm color palette with champagne accents and trims. This combination brought a sense of elegance and tranquility to the space, echoing the serene surroundings of the sea and enhancing the overall experience for those onboard. And textures? Textures are essential in evoking tactile sensations. For example, a blend of smooth marble and textured wood can create a contrasting experience that delights the senses, adding depth and intrigue to a space. Lighting probably also plays an important part. Absolutely. Lighting can transform a space en-tirely. I’ve used diffused lighting in dining areas to create an intimate and romantic ambiance, while strategic spotlighting in lounges high-lights artworks or architectural features. Please tell us more about the incredible Lady Lene. Lady Lene represents a harmonious blend of luxury and innovation. Every design choice, from the color scheme inspired by the Mediterranean Sea to the use of space-maximizing elements, was made to enhance the sensations of elegance and comfort, making it a unique piece of floating art. Were there challenges with Lady Lene?Lady Lene is a particularly special project for me, as it was designed for four generations of a family that wanted to feel at home at sea. The challenge was to make the entire yacht wheelchair accessible for the oldest generation, without making this feature too obvious. This required creative design solutions and meticulous planning to ensure that the accessibility measures were seamlessly integrated into the luxurious aesthetics of the yacht. From the gentle ramps to the carefully arranged circulation spaces, every element was crafted to provide comfort and elegance, allowing all family members to enjoy the unique sensations of being at

home on the water. Lady Lene stands as a testament to thoughtful design that caters to the diverse needs of its occupants while maintaining an aura of sophistication and charm. How do you navigate what is essentially a male-dominated industry – the yachting world, and also garner respect from your male counterparts? I focus on the quality of my work and my ability to translate sensations into design. My projects speak for themselves, and I believe that excellence transcends gender barriers. Exciting projects on the horizon? I’m currently working on four new custom yachts, and what’s particularly thrilling is the increase in both the length and complexity of these projects. These new ventures present fresh challenges that require innovative solutions, but they also open doors to exciting possibilities. Each project allows me to explore new facets of design, from intricate spatial arrangements to sophisticated aesthetic themes. As the demands grow, so does the opportunity to push the boundaries of yacht design and create spaces that not only dazzle the eye but also deeply resonate with the unique desires and lifestyles of my clients. The road ahead is filled with promise, and I can’t wait to see where it leads. Parting thoughts? My work in interior design, particularly in the intricate world of yachts, goes beyond mere aesthetics. It’s about understanding the dreams and desires of my clients and translating those into tangible spaces where they can live in the reality that they have imagined. Every project is a new adventure in creativity and empathy, a journey where I strive to craft an environment that resonates with the unique personality and aspirations of those who will call it home. Whether it’s the calming embrace of a seascape-inspired palette or the ingenious use of space to cater to specific needs, my goal is to create designs that aren’t just visually stunning but also deeply meaningful. In the end, it’s about more than just design; it’s about bringing dreams to life. https://carlaguilhem.com/

MARTIN KEMP

Raising The Bar in Aviation and Yacht Interiors | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS PHOTOS BY MATTHEW EVANS

Fashioning some of the most sophisticated spaces in the world is akin to breathing for Martin Kemp. Upscale Living magazine spoke with him about what goes into designing the interiors of the magnificent 45M Logica superyacht and the extraordinary Challenger jet. Martin, tell us a bit about yourself. I was born and raised in Wales, my roots feel very Gallic and natural at heart, although I have a passion for the energy city life brings too. My parents were both artistic, skilled at drawing, making, building, decorating so it seems likely my fondness for design came from this heritage. I’d watch my father draw details in our garden which he would then dig and plant, see my mother paint portraits and make dry-stone walls with equal alacrity. In ‘those days’ she made much of her clothing with the skills of a Savile Row tailor and I am sure this attention to detail in both of my parents embedded itself in my growing mind. Consequently, I found myself beginning to be interested in the arts and drawing, imagining fantasy architecture at the young age of 9 to 10 years, fascinated by its detail and how furniture could be placed inside the spaces I was fashioning. In adulthood, this blossomed into a career in interior architecture and design, finding influences from fellow designers, architects, vehicle interiors, fashion, furniture and product – enabling me to bring an enthusiastic and genuinely considered approach to the extraordinary projects I am now privileged to touch. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? My mother and father were both creative, skilled at drawing and always modifying the family home and garden. My grandfather had a workshop and was always repairing pieces of furniture or lamps, even making his own tools. You sketch your designs by hand. Why is that? Seeing my parents draw by hand initiated a familiarity and comfort in using a pencil or pen, with schooling continuing the trend. Today such a fluid way of using the hand sits naturally with me. How do you go about transforming your sketches into works of art? Not sure that they’re works of art, but certainly they evolve, often going through multiple sketches before arriving at a final direction. Then I quite often develop them further using contemporary techniques such as Photoshop or Sketchup. 32 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

Talk us through your design process. I allow my mind to be free, let my hand move unhindered, expel as many ideas as time and thought permit. These then transfer into CAD/ Sketchup/Photoshop for accuracy and more realistic representation. Do you work according to specific client briefs or are you given creative freedom? Clients usually allow us to be free with thought and creativity, though it of course can be project-related – more commercial schemes have some limitations where private homes/projects are much freer. Are budgets set or is there wiggle room? We are sometimes given a guide-budget, though we rarely work to a fixed spend – ‘wiggle-room’ is always present, as inevitably clients increase their investment when they see our creativity and appreciate what can be achieved in their scheme. How do you manage to maintain the exceptional standard for yacht and aviation interior design? Delivering exceptional quality is one of our key mantras, it is part of our reputation, so we seek out the very best craftspeople to collaborate with and reinforce our values. Likewise, we like to think our attention to detail in what can be relatively ‘confined’ spaces also raises the bar, introducing new levels of trim, finish, and form. How important is sustainability? It has to be considered - we cannot be blinkered - though historically many of the materials used in our projects are from natural resources i.e. wood, leather, silk, cashmere, marble. That said, our consultants are pivotal in driving more sustainable techniques, so we do rely on them to highlight new methods of manufacturing, or to introduce us to new finishes which have been produced ethically and/or sustainably. When designing a home on the sea, what are the most important factors to consider when fashioning a product that is essentially a confined space? Comfort and safety are paramount, hence with the motion of a ‘floating home’, we avoid sharp corners – rounding or softening forms, upholstering cabin walls are obvious examples. Storage is key, maximizing where belongings can be kept, luggage stored, even how the toothbrush, soap and towels are within reach and not likely to fall in the event of rough weather, ensures a comfortable experience.

And the most important factors for aircraft design? We have to consider all of the factors in yacht design, though in a much more confined space of course, added to which is an even tougher weight factor. With aircraft we honeycomb-back a lot of the materials to dramatically cut down the impact of a design on weight. That’s before we accommodate the far more stringent fire regulations in our material selection.

delivering what we all consider to be ultimate experiences really seals the deal.

Please talk us through the brief for the Private Jet Challenger 605. Simple really - to create the best 605 in the air. Our client is an ardent advocate of style and quality design, preferring also a limited palette of neutral materials, albeit the finest. Our design we hope is timelessly modern and combines details and coverings not seen before in an aircraft this size.

https://martinkempdesign.com/

Exciting projects on the horizon? Five houses in the south of France, three in Switzerland, a superyacht in Italy, three London houses, a London development, several European penthouses, a Monaco development … and the opening of our New York-based studio, keeps us on our (very) humbled toes and we love it.

I suppose in these constricted spaces, for yachts and aircraft, color choices are of the utmost importance. In some ways yes, though equally clients feel they can be a bit more frivolous too – as these are spaces in which time is short and sweet. Unlike a home, these are spaces in which to travel, make an impression, or take a holiday, so our aircraft designs can be both neutral and restful or stimulating and dynamic. Yachts tend to be bright or bring more of a ‘holiday’ mood, often through accessorizing to make updates more cost-effective. I assume lighting is also imperative. Versatile lighting is always essential in any space, be it house, yacht or jet. Good adjustable lighting with selective settings is fundamental to achieve mood options and practical functions, for any time of day. Is there a specific trend lately when it comes to interiors and furnishings? We endeavor to never follow trends as these often date, consequently we are unaware of any current influences. There is hopefully a fun aspect to your work too. It is always rewarding and fun to work on such exciting schemes, the freedom to create is all an artist could wish for, but seeing projects in context, meeting the skilled manufacturers, and 34 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

BMW WELT | BY TRACY ELLEN BEARD PHOTOS COURTESY OF BMW AG

The acronym BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, which roughly translates to the Bavarian Engine Works Company. The name refers to the company’s origin in the German state of Bavaria. It also indicates BMW’s original product range, engines for various applications. BMW is a comprehensive motor company and includes numerous luxury brands. These cars are exceptionally well-built and stylish and offer multiple levels of luxury for the discerning consumer. BMW Welt is an experience not to be missed. Those purchasing BMW automobiles can book their vehicle collection at BMW Welt to pick up their new car in Munich. THE HISTORY OF BMW BMW Classic Head Archivist Jakobs said, “The founding story of BMW is a bit complicated as it is rooted in two companies. On the one hand, the Bayerische Flugzeug Werke (BFW) was founded on March 7, 1916, which in turn emerged from Otto Flugwerke. The name Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) and the iconic trademark were created in 1917 after the renaming of Rapp Motorenwerke, an aircraft engine manufacturer. In 1922, there was a merger when the name, trademarks, and patents of Bayerische Motoren Werke were transferred to BMW.” BMW’s first product was a straight-six aircraft engine called the BMW Illa. At the end of World War I, BMW continued to produce motorcycle engines, farm equipment, household items, and railway brakes. The company made its first motorcycle, the BMW R32, in 1923. Five years later, in 1928, BMW became an automobile manufacturer and sold its first car, the BMW 3/15. During the 1930s, the company expanded into sports cars and other luxury vehicles. Until World War II, BMW focused on building aircraft engines, motorcycles, and automobiles. However, during the war, the predominant focus was on building aircraft engines. But at the same time, pioneering cars and motorcycles were created, which were successful on the international racetracks. Car manufacturing completely ended during the war. After

WWII, BMW was forbidden from building more aircraft engines, so they produced pots, pans, and bicycles. In 1948, the company again jumped into motorcycle production and resumed car production in Bavaria in 1952 with the BMW 501 Saloon. The range of cars continued to expand into 1955. However, fewer large cars and limos were selling during that time, so they built the Isetta microcar, an economical vehicle perfect for the average family. The Isetta was an Italian car modified and built under an Italian license, Iso. The company was an Italian refrigerator company and later became a famous sportscar maker. The Isetta was a tiny car, not much larger than a refrigerator, but it was priced so families could venture out of the area. With the “New Class” sporty sedans in the 1960s, the success story began as a manufacturer of sporty premium cars, which continues to this day. As the years go by, visionaries at BMW continue to produce new iterations of impressive vehicles and add to their brand collection. BMW WELT, THE BUILDING A visit to BMW Welt is a chance to experience

BMW paradise. BMW Welt allows visitors to learn about the latest models from BMW, BMW Motorrad, MINI, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, consult with professionals, and dream about luxury car ownership. The facility is an architectural wonder, and the restaurants onsite offer culinary adventures for foodies. BMW Welt has several event spaces like the Double Cone and Auditorium Business Club. The most significant event space can host up to 1,400 guests. The event spaces are separate from the showroom floor, where admission is free to everyone. Building construction began in 2004, and BMW Welt opened to the public in 2007. Professor Prix from the Coop Himmelb(l)au office was chosen to design BMW Welt among more than 200 architectural offices. In his previous career, Professor Prix created numerous unique buildings worldwide; his team was from Vienna. He was recognized for his creative architectural vision and his original drawings for BMW Welt. Professor Prix’s initial vision was for the whirlwind design at the main entrance, as he wanted to emphasize the dynamic elegance of

44 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

the BMW brand. The double cone or whirlwind stayed with the brand, and the company occasionally uses the original drawing on invitations and marketing materials. Professor Prix’s concept of BMW Welt was to create a walkable cloud, a fantasy where the whirlwind is enveloped in a cloud. This grandiose project came with a price tag consisting of many zeros. COLLECTING YOUR NEW CAR After purchasing a new BMW, customers can arrange to collect the new vehicle at BMW Welt. After coming through the whirlwind, you enter The Plaza, an urban marketplace. RollsRoyce Motor Cars, BMW with the sub-brands BMW M, BMW i, and MINI or BMW Motorrad are displayed. Vehicles on the showroom floor are not for sale. The massive roof space, seen from the showroom, is very open, light, and captivating. It appears to be floating. Each vehicle arriving at BMW Welt stays at the facility for 2-6 days, where it receives an ID number and goes through a series of checks to ensure it is ready for delivery to the customer. Initially, each car is placed on a tray upon

arrival and robotically transported to one of the 284 fully-automated parking slots on five different levels. During each car’s stay, the car remains on the tray and will be robotically moved into the transition room where a technician “wakes it up” and double checks everything. The transition area is essential because people cannot go into the five-level parking bay to work as the area contains less than 15% oxygen. After the technician deems the car ready, it is again transported robotically. On the day of delivery, the car is robotically removed from the bay, the license plates are placed on the vehicle, and the technician makes final checks to ensure that everything is perfect before the car

is transported in the glass elevator to rise and be placed on one of the 20 presentation platforms. It’s like a stage where the customers and their new cars are the stars. Customers collecting their cars can bring family and friends to enjoy the celebratory “final reveal” event at BMW Welt. Guests often spend an entire day BMW Welt. When the facility initially opened, there were about 11 models to show. Today, more than 30 variations exist, including diesel, hybrid, electric engines, and more. BMW Welt is a stunning and exhilarating place for car enthusiasts, car lovers, and those who appreciate innovative technology. Visit BMW Welt today for some dreaming, great food, or an exciting event. 

DESIGNER

RACHEL GILBERT Contemporary Sophistication | BY FELICITY CARTER PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE BRAND

T

hink beautiful, show-stopping occasion wear, and think Rachel Gilbert. Having founded her eponymous brand in 2007, she has crafted a reputation as one of Australia’s most distinguished fashion designers, offering ready-to-wear, eveningwear, and bridal collections that combine contemporary elegance with craftsmanship and fine detailing; cue one-shoulder gowns with oversized bows, crystal embellishments, velvet ruching, floral appliqués, tulle, sequins, and that’s just for starters. Rachel’s modern interpretation of sophistication has proved to be a big hit amongst the fashion set and buyers alike, with the brand being available in leading retailers worldwide, from Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus to Selfridges, Moda Operandi, and Harrods. We talked to Rachel Gilbert to learn more about her namesake label. How did you first get into the industry? I’d always been drawn to the fashion industry growing up. Once I finished school, I enrolled at the Whitehouse Institute of Design and solidified my passion for designing. I first worked in New York with Nikki Hilton for years, expanding my knowledge and skills before returning to Australia and starting what is now known as Rachel Gilbert.

Where do you find your inspiration? I find inspiration all around me. In my spare time, I love to immerse myself in family time. We often travel together, and it leads to amazing experiences or moments that catalyze a single thought or feeling I turn into something else. A recent trip to the Maldives inspired our upcoming Resort 24 collection; the oceanic landscape’s flora and fauna and the colors made the perfect foundation for a collection. Who do you design for? Ultimately, I design for ‘her.’ The core of Rachel Gilbert will always be our customer, creating pieces that she can wear for the moments in her life she wants to remember. Being an event wear brand, we are often thought of on monumental occasions, celebrations, and milestones. I

love being able to create pieces that make our clients feel their best, always considering what she needs and wants at particular moments in her life. What’s your process? We work with some incredible artisans to make the Rachel Gilbert product, most of which have been with us from the early beginnings. We are always searching for unique and unexpected ways of creating. I’m always in awe of the intricacy in the hand-embellished work that goes into our pieces, each individually hand-sewn and placed to create what feels like wearable artwork. Currently, which is your favorite piece and why? This Fall, we launched our new category, contemporary. I created it for the micro-moments in our lives to be effortlessly reached for when going to lunch, on dinner dates, and for important meetings. I love the Ziara Top & Skirt from this collection. It is so effortlessly chic and timeless. What has been the standout moment of your career to date? It’s always beautiful to reflect on the moments that have led the brand to where it is today— it’s hard to draw importance to one particular significant moment. Still, in the last 24 months, we have truly worked on refining what Rachel Gilbert stands for, expanding categories and offerings to create a holistic approach to the brand. It has often felt like a rebirth of the brand and has been so inspiring to look back and into the future.  48 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

GLENTURRET Whisky Their New Clothing Line | BY KEVIN PILLEY PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE BRAND

Although it seems to go against all norms of elegance and definition of style, a newly released range of clothing exudes high fashion while celebrating its roots in whisky. The refinement of high-end single malts oozes from every thread. The Glenturret, Scotland’s oldest working distillery (established 1763), launched its debut lifestyle, clothing, and accessories collection from its distillery shop in Crieff, and its online store is up and running. The high-end whisky producer has joined forces with Glasgow based luxury garment maker Alexander Manufacturing. The home of the original Mackintosh, the manufacturer dates to 1815, when Thomas Hancock patented the process for waterproofing fabric. Using traditional processes going back 175 years, the company continues to be driven by innovation and creates some of the world’s best quality, sustainable garments. Featuring a bespoke tartan created exclusively for The Glenturret by the iconic Lovat Mill in Hawick in the Scottish Borders and listed on the Scottish tartan register, the collection includes trench coats, a weekend bag, a hat, and a picnic blanket. The Glenturret X Alexander Manufacturing collection is made at local textile mills specializing in crafting low-carbon footprint materials, repurposed wools,

plant-based waxes, and fabrics from tree cellulose and natural cloths. JAEGER-LECOULTRE’S CALIBER 101 COLLECTION | BY ALINA ROSA LEYVA

Jaeger-LeCoultre unveils three exquisite new high jewelry watches that seamlessly blend exceptional gem-setting with the iconic Caliber 101. Each timepiece is a vibrant and distinctive celebration of femininity, showcasing the limitless creative possibilities that arise from the melding of this unique watch mechanism and high jewelry.

A

marvel of innovative design, 101 Secrets dazzles with nearly 27 carats of diamonds. This opulent Caliber 101 masterpiece boasts a rivière-style bracelet adorned with a discreet mechanism, allowing the wearer to reveal the dial at her discretion. The 101 Bangle, initially introduced in 2020, takes on two exceptional interpretations—one in pink gold with a red lacquer dial complemented by diamonds, and the other in white gold with a snow-white lacquer dial complemented by sapphires and diamonds. The exquisite 101 Secrets timepiece showcases a mesmerizing display of shimmering diamonds. Crafted with intricate detail, it combines the elegance of jewelry with the practicality of a hidden watch. This captivating creation features four rows of diamonds meticulously set in a combination of claw and grain settings. The outer rows of diamonds are delicately held above the gold surface, allowing light to illuminate each stone from all angles, while the inner rows provide a striking contrast and accentuate the Art Deco-inspired design. Initially inspired by the 19th-century tradition of secret watches, this masterpiece seamlessly integrates functionality and beauty. In harmony with the concept of discreet timekeeping, a small, concealed button on the bracelet allows the wearer to reveal a glowing mother-of-pearl

dial discreetly hidden within the bracelet. With a gentle press, the dial appears, displaying the time with grace and sophistication. Once released, the dial recedes, returning the bracelet to its radiant and continuous flow of diamonds. The 101 Secrets showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of Jaeger-LeCoultre, with 1,024 diamonds meticulously set by expert gem-setters. Each stone is flawlessly positioned to enhance its brilliance, resulting in a remarkable total carat weight of 26.75. The precise and labor-intensive gem-setting process required an impressive 182 hours of meticulous work, skillfully carried out in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s own Metier Rares™ workshop. Experience the hidden magic and unparalleled beauty of the 101 Secrets timepiece, where exquisite design and exceptional functionality unite in perfect harmony. The 101 Bangle, initially unveiled in 2020, embodies a captivating blend of design elements from Art Deco and 20th-century Modernism. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s skilled artisans meticulously set nearly 1,000 precious stones onto the bracelet, eliminating the need for a clasp by implementing an ingenious hidden lock system that can be effortlessly operated with a simple gesture. In 2023, the Maison introduces two distinctive interpretations of the 101 Bangle, each an extraordinary piece. The pink gold variant features a delicate red lacquer dial, which creates a striking contrast against the white diamonds and harmonizes flawlessly with the warm undertones of the precious metal. The 996 diamonds (19.7 carats) are skillfully graded in size to enhance the mesmerizing three-dimensional effect. At the same time, the gem-setters meticulously employ the griffe- and grain-setting techniques to optimize

the play of light on the exquisite gemstones. Moreover, the bracelet’s profile is elegantly adorned with diamonds, further accentuating its radiance. In a first for the 101 Bangle, the white gold edition showcases the graceful curves of the design with a row of brilliant-cut sapphires, expertly graduated in size, enveloping the wrist. The resplendent blue hue of the sapphires is amplified by an additional row of sapphires within the bracelet’s profile, effortlessly complemented by white diamonds, white gold, and a snow-white lacquer dial. This interpretation, comprising 347 sapphires (10.29 cts) and 645 diamonds (10.99 cts), boasts 21.28 carats of precious stones, exuding a captivating allure. Impeccable craftsmanship and exquisite detailing define the allure of the distinctive 101 Bangle collection, offering an unrivaled blend of timeless elegance and contemporary flair. A Rich Heritage of Creativity and Technical Prowess. La Grande Maison, driven by the founder’s pioneering spirit, embarked on developing exquisite women’s watches. Recognizing the immense potential of timepieces that combined the elegance of jewels and accessories, they immediately forged ahead. Over the years, as societal evolution redefined femininity, the Manufacture crafted watches that flawlessly blended technical prowess with creative ingenuity, delivering beauty in countless forms. In their quest to demonstrate the harmony between precision and miniaturization, watchmakers at the Maison engineered the groundbreaking Caliber 101 in 1929. Way ahead of its time and without modern technology, this feat of miniaturization earned global recognition as the world’s smallest mechanical movement. While technical advancements have since enhanced the materials and craftsmanship, the dimensions and architecture have remained unaltered. The current generation of Caliber 101 comprises 98 components (compared to

TIMEPIECES

the original 78), measuring a slender 14 mm x 4.8 mm, with a mere 3.4 mm thickness (occupying a volume of 0.2 cm3) and weighing just one gram. Given the minuscule scale of its mechanism, each component of the Caliber 101 is meticulously crafted and adjusted, rendering every timepiece genuinely unique. Only a select few master watchmakers at the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture possess the exceptional skills required to produce and assemble movements at this microscopic level. Consequently, production is limited, with only a few dozen examples crafted each year. Building upon the legacy of the remarkable Caliber 101, the Maison introduces three new timepieces that seamlessly intertwine Jaeger-LeCoultre’s expertise in miniature watchmaking with the extraordinary skills of its gem-setters. The collaborative efforts of designers, watchmakers, and jewelers under one roof at the Manufacture culminate in an exceptional fusion of technical sophistication, creative design, and aesthetic beauty. Initially conceived and developed for jewelry watches in 1929 by La Grande Maison, the Caliber 101 revolutionized feminine watchmaking. Its petite size and baguette shape opened unprecedented realms of aesthetic freedom for designers. This dainty hand-wound caliber remains the world’s smallest mechanical movement to this day and weighs in at a mere gram, and it stands as a testament to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s enduring commitment to craftsmanship and innovation, as one of the oldest movements to have continuously been in production by the Maison.

VICTORIA HOLLY Creating Captivating Interiors | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS PHOTOS COURTESY OF VICTORIA HOLLY INTERIORS

An appreciation at a young age of designing living spaces inspired Victoria Holly to start her own firm over a decade ago. She spoke with Upscale Living magazine about what it takes to create captivating interiors that are livable and luxurious. Victoria, please tell us a bit about yourself. I’m an interior designer and owner of the Los Angeles interior design firm, Victoria Holly Interiors. I also have an established art collection, The Holly Collective. I’m a mom of two with a big happy dog. Oh yes, and I have a husband, haha! I’ve been in the interior design industry for about 15 years now, and our firm focuses on capturing our clients’ style and executing it, and creating it in the best way possible. We work on both residential and commercial projects around the world. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? I grew up surrounded by interior design magazines such as Elle Decor and Architectural Digest; I was always captivated by the beautiful photos and even at a young age, I was so appreciative of how we design the spaces we live in. I used to cut out photos of furniture and arrange them into little mood boards, even at age 8. When I was growing up, my father was fortunate to be able to work with an interior designer for our house. I remember I had a bright purple polka dot quilt set from Bed Bath & Beyond. One day, I came home from school, and she had somehow sourced the same fabric and had a cornice and drapes for above the bed. I was so amazed that such attention to detail could exist. It wasn’t just a close fabric match - it was the exact same fabric! That’s when I knew this was what I wanted to do.

the foundation for understanding design principles as well as the inner workings of running a design firm. After a couple of years of following in her footsteps, I decided to start my own interior design firm. I initially started my firm in Boston and New York City and these were two great cities to start in - they offered challenging spaces where we needed to work within the constraints of homeowners’ associates, city codes, and small square footage. This working environment was so important to developing our craft and being able to develop beautiful designs while working within boundaries. Now in Los Angeles, it’s been over 10 years and our firm has flourished. We would also like to know more about the Holly Collective paintings. From the age of 4, until I went to college, I went to an afterschool art school for 3 hours a day. This really helped honed my visual craft and led me to study fine art in college, with an emphasis on color theory. Once I had established my interior design firm, I knew it was time to find a role for my artistic abilities outside of interiors. This is how I developed The Holly Collective - creating beautiful textured pieces that comple-mented interiors, with an emphasis on color and the role that adding the right color provides to a space. Each painting features a unique textural design, and we customize each paint color for the right look and finish - including the sheen level. We provide a set of designs and sizes but also work with a variety of discerning clients and designers to create custom commissions. How did you conceptualize the textured artworks in your collection? A lot of it is a raw, creative process. Trying out different materials, blends, and tools to get the desired look and feel. And drawing inspiration from architecture and history.

Has your fine art background stood you in good stead? Absolutely! It helps me with being in tune with specific details and finishes that are crucial to projects being of the highest quality. It has also helped me in balancing color and pattern, as well as sourcing artwork for projects. The right artwork piece can make or break a room.

What impact do large-scale artworks have on a space? A large piece of artwork with the right scale for a room can not only change the complete look and feel of the room but can also ground the space and provide the correct finishing touch. For example, a large piece of artwork can completely fill a hallway, or ground sofa that may seem too small, or provide an unexpected pop of color in an otherwise neutral room.

When and why did you start your eponymous firm, Victoria Holly Interiors? Fast forward several years and I was fortunate enough to secure an internship with a world-renowned interior designer, which offered me an incredible transformative experience into the world of design. It laid

You create luxurious and livable spaces. Please tell us more. My interior design firm’s goal is to create interiors and spaces that completely captivate our clients’ styles, lifestyles, habits, and dreams. We want to create a space and environment that completely caters to what they want, while we keep in mind aesthetics and offer new and

bold approaches to their style. We think that luxury and livable are one and the same - it’s all about sourcing durable and functional materials that you don’t need to worry about. Luxury is in the feeling and shapes of pieces, livable is in the content of pieces! Your firm offers 3D renderings. What are the advantages of this principle? We love incorporating 3D renderings when it makes sense, especially for renovations. It’s so hard for clients to visualize a finished room when all that exists is exposed framing. It allows us to keep on with the momentum of the design and sourcing furniture and layouts even before drywall is put up or electrical is in. Renderings also help us to determine the solution for more challenging applications - such as deciding between a kitchen drop-down hood versus a flush hood. It also helps when we have two really incredible designs for a room and helps us and our clients narrow down how it looks. But of course, all designs always look better in the end result! How much research goes into an interior design project? While we incorporate the same design theory and principles into each project, each client and house is completely different. We do our due diligence when it comes to truly understanding their style, their needs, and how they plan to use each space in their home. This way when we go to the design stage and present the look and feel of each room, it’s always right on the mark. It’s exactly what they wanted, and then from there, we try to push them a little bit to be more confident in their design decisions and maybe try some bold choices. But the primary role of research for our projects goes into our clients and understanding them. What are your favorite textiles to work with? I can’t say I have a favorite, but fabrics that are easy to clean are so important to me. I’m an avid believer that you should never compromise the look you want. And the best way to do that, for example, if you want an all-white sofa and have kids, is to choose a super cleanable fabric. For

me and our firm, I prioritize textiles that are gorgeous but also easy to clean. Then there’s no panic when someone inevitably spills red wine or coffee on their furniture! And favorite colors? Pastel lavender! I’m having a big purple moment right now. And I love lavender. For clients, we’re seeing a lot of neutrals and a lot of green right now. Do you believe in repurposing? Yes, always! There is so much waste that goes into the furniture industry right now. And with a lot of our clients, this is our second or third time working with them. When they’re moving to a new home, we love figuring out how we can change the look and feel of their new home while utilizing some of their existing items. For example, we had a fantastic mirror in our client’s entryway, but in their new house, it would have been way too small in the entryway. It was amazing in their new powder bathroom, though. How do you go about reflecting your client’s vision into an amazing space for them? We focus on the nuances of what they like or don’t like. For example, we may have a client who says, “I love anything glam!” But glam can be executed in so many ways. We want to understand what they like and don’t like when it comes to a glam look. Does that mean brass? Does that mean mirrors and rich paneling? Does that mean a lot of marble? Does that mean glam traditional or glam modern? What do they love and what do they hate within a glam style? From there we are then able to tailor a home design to them. I secretly think design words mean nothing. Glam, traditional, modern, minimalist, etc. There’s too much overlap in these terms, they begin to lose their meaning and their impact in the design world. If something really doesn’t work in a space, how do you communicate that without coming across as forceful? And what to do with heirloom pieces? You never know someone’s history with a piece. First and foremost, we like to get a sense of their history with the piece,

62 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

and we pose questions such as, “How do we feel about this table?” or “Is this piece important to you?” We want to understand why that specific piece is there and its role for the person. Most of the time, we’re met with a laugh “Not at all! Wouldn’t miss it!” But sometimes, we get a response such as “I know it’s a little departure from our style, but it was my mother’s,” or “It has sentimental value.” From there we open up the conversation and focus on the practicality of their design. We might say, “My concern is that you want the look of an ultra-modern living room, but this chair feels super traditional.” We always pose solutions such as changing the fabric/ finish or relocating it to an unexpected area in the house that might work better for the design goals. I always focus on the practical reasons of why it won’t work, but I always have solutions in mind. You’re renovating your own home. How is that going? Never-ending! The cobbler’s son never has shoes. But it’s true, we work every day on getting our client’s into their homes and so my own often falls behind on the scheduling. Right now, we have most of the home completed but there are longer-term projects we have in mind, like updating the facade of the house with stone or updates to the garden. What aspect has having two young children added? Have they inspired your organizational acumen? I don’t know if they’ve necessarily changed our organizational acumen, but they definitely have made us more of a thought leader in the category. We design kids’ rooms, nurseries, and family rooms with storage in mind. And I’m not a believer of storage furniture - those offer short-term problem solving and don’t grow well with family’s needs. I believe in storage solutions like built-ins and innovative solutions that can adapt and grow as kids grow. While these types of built-ins are more of an investment in the beginning, it tends to be less in the long term than the amount people spend on temporary storage solutions over and over again. Your dog is absolutely adorable!

Thank you, he’s almost 9 years old. We got him when he was just 10 weeks old, and he’s lived with us in New York City and Los Angeles. He gets very excited about design changes around the house and loves when “work” is being done. He’s been very respectful of the furniture and always asks if he can go up on furniture. And he is an employee favorite! What projects are you currently working on? Every project is so different. We’re two years into a full penthouse renovation that is in a glam modern style, but we’re also working on a super traditional home in shades of green and botanical elements. And a minimalist home design incorporating rich original millwork. Every project (and client) is so different! Which keeps things interesting and always has us learning more. www.victoriaholly.com

At Home With

ADAM BLACKMAN & DAVID CRUZ | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

Renowned for their unique creative vision, the storied careers of Adam Blackman and David Cruz is documented in their book entitled Beauty & Mischief: The Design Alchemy of Blackman Cruz. The duo spoke with Upscale Living magazine about how Blackman Cruz came to be, and allowed us a look into their exquisite homes. Adam & David, please tell us a bit about yourselves. A + D collectively: We are two lucky guys from disparate backgrounds with dissimilar interests who found ourselves in the happy position of getting to search out our hearts’ desires for a living. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? Adam: Actually, no. My original love was the theater, and while I can be drawn to dramatic pieces, my love for what I do came later. David: Not at all. It all happened organically, and I fell into this career. How did you end up in business together? A + D collectively: We were both established dealers at the time. We met and ended up sharing a space in an antique collective. Almost immediately, we recognized that our styles mixed in a unique way creating an interesting gestalt. And after 30 years, we still work the same way. You specialize in antiques and collectibles. A + D collectively: We like to say we sell ‘life enhancers’, meaning we sell whatever strikes our fancy, whether it be new or old, notable or not. We also design a line of furniture and objects under the Blackman Cruz Workshop mantle and represent the work of a diverse group of artisans and designers. Please tell us more about your homes. Adam: My wife and I have two homes, one in Los Angeles and one in Ojai. While the style of each is mid-century modern, their vibes are decidedly different. Our place in Ojai is more open, Photo courtesy of Lendon Flanagan 64 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

rustic, and casual while our LA home is more tree-house-like. We’ve had our home in LA for 25 years and our place in Ojai for almost 6 years. It took us nearly 15 years to restore our place in LA and we expect to spend the same time restoring our place in Ojai. David: My LA home is a 1939 Paul Laszlo house that I got 20 years ago and every time I walk downstairs and look over the Hollywood landscape, I’m still grateful for living here. My San Miguel house is a pastiche of old and new. It’s restoration has been equally challenging as it has been rewarding. How would you best describe your design style? Adam: We’re not ones to follow trends. We are drawn to items that make a statement, and particularly what we haven’t seen before. We get pulled in by the craftsmanship of a beautiful carving or something monumental in scale or material. Where / what / who inspires your design style? Adam: We find inspiration in so many things - whether it be an aging tree stump or the work of an amazing designer or craftsman. We also love the rush we get from traveling because of the exposure to different ideas and histories. Touring a place like the Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan by Piero Portaluppi stays with you. How do you keep things fresh and new in terms of decorating? Adam: I bring something new into the mix nearly every day. There are certainly items I’ll never part with, but I enjoy letting spaces evolve. My wife and I also subscribe to the concept of ‘trading up.’ Rather than getting hung up on finding that perfect piece for a specific space, we live with something for a while and then change it up when we see something we like better. David: I don’t think it’s necessary to keep things fresh. I think it’s necessary to keep things consistent and keep my interests alive. Is there a specific color you are drawn to in interior design? Adam: Not consciously. We prefer natural tones to white or black, but we’re not opposed to a pop of bright color in the mix. Do you believe in repurposing? A + D collectively: Absolutely. Do you have any special heirloom pieces? Adam: I do. My grandmother’s sarouk rug from her home in the Bronx has a special place in our home in Ojai. We also have a number of pieces from my wife’s family, including a watercolor painted by her Great Grandmother. David: I have my Uncle Billy’s 18th Century doors from his house in Northern Mexico that I just installed in San Miguel. Which part of your home is you favorite? Adam: That’s a hard one. 66 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

David: My favorite room in San Miguel is my bedroom overlooking the garden where I like to commune with nature. In which part of your home do you spend the most time? Adam: In LA, I would say the sitting room. In Ojai, I spend the most time in the garden. David: I spend the most time in my yoga / office studio that has a wonderful view overlooking downtown Hollywood. Do you have any designers that inspire you? A + D collectively: Many … Rick Owens, Francoix Catreau, Carlo Scarpa, Louis Kahn, Carlo Mollino, Carlo Bugatti, Eileen Gray, Luis Barragan, Clara Porset. The list goes on. Please tell us about your book: Beauty & Mischief – The Design Alchemy of Blackman Cruz. A + D collectively: The process has been an unexpected pleasure, at times revealing, at times humbling. It has been wonderful to look back at our 30 years of blood, sweat and tears and we be able to say unequivocally that we still love the thrill of the hunt. Parting thoughts? A + D collectively: It’s important to know that beauty is intrinsically healing. For more information, visit https://blackmancruz.com/

PALAZZO AVINO AMALFI COAST, ITALY

The Amalfi Coast’s beloved luxury escape, Palazzo Avino the pink paradise perched atop the medieval hilltop village of Ravello is adding a new chapter to their story with both property renovations and launching their Mar-A-Vi-glia, a white wine coming from the grapes at La Cascinetta, Palazzo Avino’s vineyard. Located 37 miles from Naples Airport, the boutique hotel is home to 43 guest rooms and suites, featuring views of both sea and mountain vistas. Palazzo Avino is the ultimate summer destination where guests will have access to an outdoor heated pool and spa, their own Clubhouse by the Sea at the beach, Rossellini’s a Michelin star restaurant and the Lobster and Martini Bar in addition to 24-hour room service. The new Infinito Suite,

designed by architect Giuliano Dell’Uva, features its own terrace and sea view has been newly renovated. The suite resides in the highest part of the tower and offers jaw dropping views of the coast. Dell’Uva states, “The starting point of this project was imagining a space immersed in the beauty of this breathtaking landscape and ancient architectures, with an Eastern look.” The renovation of Infinito Suite adheres to ‘Mediterranean Law’, which states everything should be colorful, in a building when facing the sea. Mariella Avino, Managing Director and Co-Owner of Palazzo Avino says, “First of all, I wanted the project to be a recovery, strongly rooted in the history of the place. I imagined that color could enter the space, to mirror the great beauty outside. For

years I had admired architect Dell’Uva’s attention to a place’s history and his ability in enhancing the outlines with colors and a timeless touch. He perfectly managed to reach both objectives, and now we leave it to our guests to admire and hopefully appreciate the details.” New for 2023 is Mar-a-viglia a white wine with a fresh Mediterranean style created by the Avino sisters. The wine is produced at La Cascinetta, the vineyard at Palazzo Avino and is a love letter from sisters Mariella, Attila, and MariaVittoria using grapes typical of the region. https://www.palazzoavino.com/

SITATUNGA PRIVATE ISLAND OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA

Great Plains, the iconic eco-tourism company, is delighted to announce the opening of Sitatunga Private Island, a water-based RéserveCollection Safari Camp in the upper reaches of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Built on a raised, wrap-around railway sleeper private deck, Sitatunga Private Island can accommodate a maximum of eight adults in total sharing two separate and stunning private suites and the spacious Sitatunga Private Island Suite. The double-bedroom Sitatunga Private Island Suite hosts four adults or a family of two adults and up to three children, offering a total footprint of approximately 6534 sq.ft. Constructed almost entirely of recycled materials, breathing new life into old treasures, the new camp offers discerning 72 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

explorers a ‘slow safari’ experience that is as sustainable as it is luxurious. Each of the two guest suites, as well as the 2-bedroomed Sitatunga Private Island Suite comes complete with an indoor lounge, gorgeously appointed bathrooms with baths and separate showers, a private deck with outdoor lounging and seating areas as well as a private pool with expansive views over the lagoon that stretches in front of the camp itself. Sitatunga Private Island will provide guests with the most authentic ‘Robinson Crusoe’inspired experience and a refuge for the soul in the Okavango Delta. As elaborated by Dereck Joubert, CEO of Great Plains: “Sitatunga Private Island is unlike any other Great Plains property, pushing the

eco-design boundary in a remote region in Botswana whilst also offering the highest level of hospitality and accommodation. It is also one of the few locations in the world where one can still see sitatunga, the rare aquatic antelope, from camp and by boat, which is the main activity here in addition to walking. It is deep Okavango Delta and, as such, is rich in birding. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day. I know our guests will enjoy every moment of it, as I do”. https://greatplainsconservation. com/safari/sitatunga-privateisland/

Experience The

AMA WATERWAYS | BY FRAN ENDICOTT MILLER

V

acationers who opt for water travel have a multitude of options when planning a getaway. From large, ocean-going cruise ships to intimate, island-hopping luxury yachts to the sublime comfort of Europe’s river vessels, the endless choices can cause decision-making ennui. Yet one cruise line proves a sure thing time and again. Whether cruising the Danube on doublewide AmaMagna or drifting amidst the Rhine’s castle-studded hills aboard AmaLucia, AmaWaterways delivers water-based travel experiences that exceed expectations. It’s not just the locations to which AmaWaterways ventures, though each is a destination over which to swoon: the Netherlands via Dutch and Belgian canals and rivers during tulip season, the vine-covered hills and dales that line Portugal’s Douro, the splendid colors of Provence via the Rhone—each features daily excursions that immerse passengers in the culture and cuisine of the regions. One could throw a dart at AmaWaterways’ varied itineraries and come up with a winner. But what truly makes an AmaWaterways cruise a “sure thing” are the intangibles. It’s the company’s adherence to guests and crew as family. It’s in the professionalism of the onboard staff, from the captain to the dining room team. It’s in the celebratory toast upon embarkation and the introduction of every single crew member the night before disembarkation. It’s in the vibe and tenor of the nightly “Sip and Sail” where guests gather in the spacious lounge to animatedly share their days’ adventures. It’s in the atmosphere of escapism, where the stresses of everyday life are left behind, if only for a week. And it’s in the number of emails and phone numbers exchanged between new friends who pledge to sail together again on a future AmaWaterways journey. It’s nearly impossible not to bond with fellow guests while biking the shores of the picturesque Danube or while wine tasting in the spectacular Wachau Valley. AmaWaterways ships and their design and layout encourage fast friendships. Each has

a spacious lounge where all passengers can find a cozy seat during cocktail hour and evening entertainment. Each also features a small library filled with books and games. AmaWaterways co-owner Kristin Karst has a hand in selecting each ship’s furnishings and décor, creating a warm and welcoming balance between cozy and elegant. So comfortable are the digs that some guests, many of them repeat river cruisers, eschew the daily excursions in favor of on board relaxation. After a 21-mile bike ride along Germany’s Neckar River during my “Captivating Rhine” cruise on AmaLucia, I was one of those who remained aboard the following day, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and easing my muscles within the swimming pool atop the expansive sun deck where canopied lounge seating provides the perfect perch from which to glide past bucolic riverbank scenery. Guests find choices in the varied staterooms and suites, which range from cozy to capacious, and each room is tended to twice daily by an attentive housekeeping staff that gladly fulfills special requests. Down-filled pillows rather than synthetic? No problem. Cotton blanket rather than duvet? Easy-peasy. Evening turn down includes a pillow-placed chocolate, bottled water, and soft illumination. Often with cruising, there’s a misconception that the form of travel equates to overindulgence and immoderation. And if that’s one’s idea of a vacation, then AmaWaterways certainly fulfills it. Yet, due to AmaWaterways’ focus on wellness, guests often leave their cruise with a renewed sense of vigor, me included. Each ship features a dedicated wellness coordinator whose daily programming might include line dancing to current hits, resistance band classes, core-strengthening, and early morning wellness walks around the sun deck “track.” (16 loops equals a mile on AmaLucia. 8 for AmaMagna.) AmaLucia’s wellness coordinator Tiago served as my personal trainer, coaching me through my pickleball-addled shoulder, providing suggested stretches, and inspiring me to continue self-care at home. And with nearly every port-of-call featuring walking/hiking/biking

74 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

excursions, and each ship featuring a small gym, it’s nearly impossible not to work off any excess calories gained from the glorious and plentiful culinary choices. Every AmaWaterways meal is redolent of a fine dining experience. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner feature a la carte menus, white tablecloths, attentive service, and a bevy of quality entrée choices, each beautifully plated and Instagram-worthy. Options are so plentiful that no meal entails repeats, though I adored and oft-ordered the always available and perfectly prepared salmon filet with French fries. (Vacation necessitates a bit of indulgence.) The experienced servers and attentive kitchen team personally handles allergies and diet restrictions. On AmaMagna, for instance, guests have their pick of four different restaurants. AmaLucia guests can dine in the main restaurant, the more casual Al Fresco Restaurant, or the reservation-only Chef ’s Table Restaurant, where a seven-course meal with wine pairings begins with a celebratory Kir Royal—all included in the cruise fare. And every dinner is preceded by the festive, complimentary “Sip and Sail” cocktail hour in the main lounge, where the bartender serves up a menu of wine, beer, and spirits, including the cocktail of the evening, such as a Cubra Libre, a French Martini, a Blue Rhine, or a Margarita. (Our AmaLucia bartender quickly learned my evening preference for a Manhattan, nodding knowingly each evening as I approached.) Whichever of AmaWaterways’ 29 ships one chooses, and in whichever location, be it Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, or Egypt, every AmaWaterways experience promises to be stress-free, eventful, delicious, and more than memorable. With AmaWaterways, while the fascinating destinations certainly influence your choice of over 35 itineraries, the people, the service, and onboard ambiance make every journey unforgettable. 

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL

GRESHAM PALACE BUDAPEST | BY TRACY BEARD PHOTOS COURTESY OF FOUR SEASONS HOTEL GRESHAM PALACE BUDAPEST

Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest opened in 2004, after a two-year $110-million restoration, as one of the newest historic treasures for the hotel company and as one of the world’s finest examples of Art Nouveau archi-tecture with stunning winter gardens, grand staircases, stained glass windows, mosaics, and ironwork. The Hotel rests on the banks of the Danube River and boasts 179 inviting guest rooms of differing sizes, including 19 suites. Modern luxuries abound throughout the building, including a spa and fitness center, indoor pool, café and restau-rant, the Bar and Lobby Lounge, and a spacious meeting space. The Hotel also showcases its glorious heritage with tall, vaulted ceilings. THE PERFECT HOME BASE Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace resides in the best spot. It is an short walk to cultural activities and shops and offers easy access to the city’s business, art, and entertainment district. The Budapest Franz Liszt International Airport is approximately 30 minutes away by car, and the Big Red Bus stops almost directly across the street from the Hotel, giving tourists another option for getting around the city. THE HISTORY OF THE GRESHAM PALACE The Gresham Palace, originating in 1906, was an icon representing prestige and luxury. The Palace was built for the Gresham Life Assurance Company. At that time, insurers were not allowed to invest in the stock market or other risky investments, so the company invested heavily in the new building to showcase its financial wealth. The history of the Palace is fascinating as it began as an insurance company and a prestigious residence, then gave way to communist-era housing, and now has been transformed into a luxury hotel owned by Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. In the past, before World War II, the Palace was also home to one of the most popular coffeehouses in the city, the Gresham-Venezia

Café. The name came from a group of influential Hungarian artists who regularly met there from the 1920s onward. THE ARCHITECTURE Zsigmond Quittner and his associate, József Vágó, were commissioned as the primary architects to design the Gresham Palace in 1904. They took inspiration from the Art Nouveau / Secessionist movement that originated among groups of avant-garde artists in Paris and Vienna. The concept highlighted bright colors, graceful lines, and themes from nature and imaginary designs. Funds were plentiful, so Quittner hired the most talented Hungarian artists and craftspeople of the day. The Palace boasted beautiful and exciting art pieces. Miksa Róth, a talented glass painter and mosaic maker, crafted the exterior glass mosaics and the stained glass windows. Maróti, Róth, and Jungfer of the world-renowned Teatro Nacional in Mexico City created the magnificent interior spaces. In its day, the Palace was not only an exquisite piece of architecture but was also known for its technological innovations, like its central heating and a unique centralized dust extraction system. The T-shaped interior shopping arcade roofed with glass was also a new innovation.

78 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

Gyula Jungfer created the three Peacock iron gates that lead into the Palace’s interior. Today, there is one original, and the other two are copies. There were no cars during the building’s construction, so the entryways were designed for those arriving by horse and carriage. Years later, when Germany invaded Hungary, the 1944 siege of Budapest wreaked havoc on the Palace. Still, in 2004, the Four Seasons Resort Company hired wrought-iron specialists, silversmiths, stained-glass makers, ceramists, mosaicists, and other craftspeople to restore any remaining artwork and to rebuild the Palace based on its original design into a stunning hotel. That year, the beautiful Palace, now a Four Seasons Hotel, was repaired, including a restored glass cupola highlighting the lobby and walking passage lined with boutiques and the Hotel bar. This area is popular for relaxing on the cozy sofas, sipping cocktails or local wine, and savoring the luxurious surroundings. A SECRET LOVE STORY Zsigmond Quittner, the Hungarian architect who designed the building, was in love with a woman who would become a tenant in the Palace after construction. He hid hearts throughout the Palace, representing his devotion to

her. These hearts can still be found in the mosaics, near the elevators, and in the ironwork and the stained glass. No one knows the total number of hearts hidden inside the property, and although it is just a building, it is filled with emotions, and many guests, even today, get caught up in the past romance. ACCOMMODATIONS The unique architectural structure of the Hotel offers unusual room configurations. The Hotel’s two towers showcase stunning views of the Danube and Buda. The two Tower Suites feature a king bedroom with domed ceilings and a large living room on separate levels. Specialty suites offer luxurious living spaces with fireplaces and dining rooms, and the two Presiden-tial Suites offer Danube views from the third or fourth floor and a furnished step-out balcony. The Royal Suite is located on the Hotel’s second floor and boasts a large terrace with panoramic views of Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and historic Budapest. FOUR SEASONS HEALTH CLUB AND SPA The Health Club and Spa features a range of in-vigorating therapies, massages, and spa treatments. Budapest has more thermal water springs than any other city, and these waters are rich in minerals and used in the Spa to stimulate and tone the skin. The Spa has seven private massage and treatment rooms, a sauna, a whirlpool, steam rooms, and a relaxation and exercise room. The indoor, infinity-edge lap pool provides an excellent opportunity for guests to exercise any time of the year. WINING AND DINING MÚZSA bar and Kollázs – Brasserie & Bar are the perfect venues for a quick bite, breakfast, lunch, dinner, high tea, or a delectable cocktail any time of day. A RECENT VISIT Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest is an ideal place to stay. During my recent visit, my husband Steve and I explored the city, dined in the brasserie, took tea at MÚZSA bar, and explored the city of Budapest with the help of a 72-hour Budapest Card (the official city pass) from Budapest Brand, which gave us free public transportation, free museum entrance fees, a free walking tour, and more. When visiting Budapest, Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest is the place to stay.

MODRIAN CANNES Another A-Lister has arrived in Cannes | BY KEVIN PILLEY

The Cote d’Azur seafront has a new kid on the block, but there is nothing brash about La Croisette’s grand dames’ new sibling. Cannes’ famous Carlton (1911), Hotel Barriere Majestic (1926), and the Art Deco Martinez (1929) imposing luxury hotels have been joined by a new ultra-chic, luxury boutique hotel on the famous Mediterranean Promenade De La Croisette, the venue of the annual Cannes Film Festival and yearly gathering of the world’s seriously photogenic people. But there is no bling or Look-At-Me-Everyone about the new Mondrian Cannes. Almost shyly as if avoiding the limelight and disliking being center-stage, the 75-room, 11-story hotel steps back from the iconic French Riviera road and strip of opulence and affluence, hiding behind its front garden and twenty-strong palm tree colony. On the site of Cannes’ first luxury hotel—Le Grand, built in 1863 and rebuilt in 1963, the hotel doesn’t want to be an old fogey. It wants to be ultra-contemporary and nuanced. Facing the ocean, the Bay of Cannes, and the Lerins islands and not far from the newly opened Harry’s Bar Cannes and nearly but not quite rubbing shoulders with the Gucci, Fendi, Dior, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Hermes, Chopard, Cartier, and Bvlgari outlets, the Mondrian aims to become the epicenter of chic design. The center part of the building belongs to the new hotel. The rest are private apartments. The Mondrian lifestyle brand has properties in LA, New York, South Beach Miami, Seoul, Doha, and London, with new

openings soon in Australia and Bordeaux. Design is at the heart of the modern Mondrian experience thanks to the collaboration with some of the world’s most famous architects and designers, including Philippe Starck and Marcel Wanders. Located close to the film festival pavilion (Palais des Festivals et Congress) on the western end of the iconic, 2km long street with the Old Port and Old Town to the west and Casino Palm Beach to the east, its ambiance is one of casual, understated luxury. Its elegance is modern rather than classic. It feels like an airport executive airport lounge but with much better food and more Roy Lichtenstein and Hilton McConnico artworks. Rooms have expansive windows, Lalique bathroom toiletries, and a replica Alexander Calder kinetic painted “static stabile” mobile sculpture on top of the mini bar cabinet. The works of photographer Mathilde L’Ecotais hang throughout the hotel, which has dual access to La Croisette. You can sit in the garden and watch the palm trees waves and the Botoxed, lashed up, and expensively coiffed walk pass and count the number of people taking their trophy chihuahuas for walks in their handbags. There are six meeting rooms and a gym but no spa or rooftop pool. Yet. The best suite on the eleventh floor has a whirlpool tub. Like all hotels on the front, the Mondrian has its own private beach (Plage 45), beach bar/ restaurant, and a discount for lounger hire. The Hyde on the beach offers seabass carpaccio, a Riviera poke bowl, langoustine risotto,

82 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

rigatoni with summer truffle, and roasted octopus in chipotle Tabasco and Jerusalem artichoke chips. The ultimate indulgence is having a rack of lamb on the sand while the rest of the world tucks into their paninis and ice cream cones behind you. But the star is the hotel’s Mr. Nakamato restaurant which has proved such a success that another is to open in Mondrian Bordeaux with a menu created by award-winning London-based Romanian Chef Alex Craciun and tweaked in the inimitable Gallic and Japanese manner by Herve Busson, Jean-Baptiste Guillaume, and sushi chef Pheerasak Plangklang. Its menu comprises a raw bar with sashimi starters, brilliantly tender melt-in-the-mouth bavette steak and black cod, and toasted pecans. It has built up a reputation since the hotel opened in March. Cannes is one of the luxury capitals of the world. It enjoys unparalleled glam status. Its Piette Canto marina hosts superyacht parties, and staying at the Mondrian gives the impression you go to them. La Croisette is the only dual carriageway listed in “the cultural heritage general inventory of France.” No dual carriageway attracts so many stars, heartthrobs, or poseurs. No dual carriageway is tarmacked every year so that the red carpet can be rolled out on it, not even Hollywood Boulevard. The Cannes Film Festival, until 2002, simply called the International Film Festival, began in 1946 to compete with Venice’s Film Festival and the Oscars. Now the paparazzi and the rich and famous have a new haunt. 

Executive Chef Bobby BrÄuer and EssZimmer by KÄfer | BY TRACY ELLEN BEARD CHEF AND ROOM PHOTOS COURTESY OF BMW AG

E

ssZimmer by Käfer is a 2-star Michelin restaurant inside BMW Welt in Munich, Germany. Executive Chef Bobby Bräuer opened and now oversees all aspects of EssZimmer, The Bavarie by Käfer, the Biker’s Lodge Bistro, Cooper’s Garden, and all catering events at BMW Welt. EssZimmer diners enjoy delicious cuisine, tasty cocktails, and fabulous wine. Guests also have a first-class view of the BMW Welt, especially of the “Premiere” at BMW Welt, where customers pick up their new BMW during the day. On a recent visit to Munich, I met Chef Bräuer and asked him about his culinary journey before dining at EssZimmer. So, do you think the people come to taste your food or to view the cars? Of course, they come for the food; at least, I hope so.

How long have you worked at this incredible venue? Although BMW Welt has been open for more than 15 years, a company out of Vienna, Austria, ran the gastronomic program when it opened. However, when the Käfer Company put in a bid to run the program about 11 years ago, they asked me to join in with them, and I did. We have four culinary outlets in the BMW Welt building alone. I opened all of them, but now I am concentrating on EssZimmer, and I have fabulous chefs who manage the other restaurants. Where and why did you begin cooking? I wanted to start in a bar. But a good friend told me to start in the kitchen, and then you can always move into a bar. I began in Munich at age 20. I studied under several chefs and did

my apprenticeship in Munich, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria, and I traveled all over Europe. I loved it, so I am still in the kitchen. Do you have a favorite cuisine? Italian is my favorite. However, at EssZimmer, we serve classic French cuisine at the base and look for products from all over our local region and from France. Unfortunately, you do not typically hear that a place serves German-influenced cuisine, and it is a little sad as we have a lot of great chefs in this country and are trying to make our own style. Do you use any interesting ingredients? During the last five years, we have used more local sweet water fish from Bavaria and nearby rather than importing fish from France or the ocean. Is it difficult to get fresh products?

85 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

R E STAU RANTS

It depends on your region, but we are close to the border of Austria, Switzerland, and Italy, and we can get everything. The Mediterranean is also not far away.

have a fantastic location. The steel and glass of the building make for a cold environment, so we had to make the interior of the restaurants warmer and more inviting.

Do you have a favorite restaurant here at BMW Welt? I like Restaurant Bavarie and the Bavarian products we use there. This style works best with us being in Munich and working with BMW. The products are simple but delicious and satisfy our variety of guests.

Tell me about the events at BMW Welt. Most events have 200-400 guests, but we also host 1000 to 1200 guests twice a year. The event space is incredible when it is all lit up and decorated. Those planning the events can choose whatever kind of food they want and opt for a buffet, a regular dinner, or a lunch.

Tell me about EssZimmer. EssZimmer opened in February 2013, and we were successful very quickly. The first Michelin Star came after half a year, and the second came a year later.

How often do you change the menu at EssZimmer? I change it every two and a half months.

Does BMW Welt management direct what you can serve? No, I decide what we make. After 11 years, I believe that they are pleased with the restaurant’s results at the end of the day. How do you feel about working at BMW Welt? I think the architecture here is the most exciting in all of Munich. You could bring this building to New York, Paris, or anywhere in the world, and it would be magnificent. We

Who visits the restaurant? We have a mixture of locals and visitors who dine with us. How many employees are in the restaurant? I have eight employees, one apprentice, and seven servers. What kind of wines are on the menu? We serve old-world wines from Germany, Austria, France, Italy, and Spain. What is the focus of your menu at EssZimmer?

86 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

Seafood and vegetables make up a good part of the menu, and we have a maximum of eight courses. There is a small bar just inside when you enter the restaurant. Is it special? Yes, this is “your bar.” We let people rent the bar area, and they can spend their entire evening there with exceptional bar food and a choice of Champagne, white wine, or whatever they would like, and self-serve it to their group. Although this is a new idea for the restaurant, Chef Bräuer anticipates that this bar will be a lively part of the restaurant. OUR DINNER AT ESSZIMMER My husband Steve and I finished the interview and headed to our “private bar” to begin the evening. We started with a glass of Billecart-Salmon Brut Rose Champagne followed by four amuse-bouchées: a citrusy lemongrass soup, a creamy banana taco with tomato salsa and lemon gel, a shell filled with fish tartare and a crunchy beet tart with trout caviar. Each dish was an explosion of flavor with a variety of textures. The bread service arrived at the table. It consisted of homemade sourdough focaccia with sunflower and pumpkin seeds, Sardinian bread, and chervil potato spread made with cream

R E STAU RANTS

cheese and cooked potato. The spread had a very fluffy, warm texture. After our bar experience, we moved into the dining room to continue our dinner. The first course was mackerel wrapped in thin slices of peach with wasabi mayonnaise and peanuts in a sesame vinaigrette bath. The mackerel was mild, the peach added a unique texture, and the vinaigrette brought excellent acidity. Our first official course was blue lobster in a shiso beurre blanc au jus and parsley cream with a caramelized shiso leaf and a tempura baked shiso leaf with a tartare of the lobster. The shiso leaves added a hint of lime flavor to the dish. The lobster paired brilliantly with a 2021 Gruner Veltliner from “Der Ott” Winery Bernhard Ott, Wagram made from the best every cuvee at the winery. The low acidity of the wine went beautifully with the sweet, tender lobster and did not overpower the delicate crustacean. Our next course, Quail from the Bresse, arrived with a 2020 Weissburgunder from the “Praesulis” Winery Gumphof in Süd-Tirol. These pinot blanc grapes were picked by hand as the vineyard grows on a hillside with a 6% grade. The dish comprised quail meat with white and green asparagus, a morel mushroom stuffed with quail mousse, a truffle vinaigrette, and an egg yolk. The acidity in the wine cut through the fattiness of the mousse and yolk. The pollock fish, topped with caviar, was served with young peas and carrots in chive butter. This dish was paired with a beautifully balanced 2018 Chablis l er Cru from the “Montée de Tonnérre” winery from Domaine Williams Févre, Burgundy. The acidity in the wine brightened the dish. The sommelier served us a delicious glass of Malterdinger 2020 to go with our add-on dish of sweetbreads. The sweetbreads were fried in rice flour, with foie gras, a tomato, cauliflower puree, a little radish, and veal sauce. The sweetbreads were tender, and the veal sauce poured over top was delicious. The palate cleanser was one of the most unusual I have ever tasted. It was ginger sorbet wrapped in nori and pickled cucumber with soy sauce and rice. This dish was the chef ’s take on sushi and was simply delicious. The next course, lamb on a glazed kohlrabi slice with artichokes, fennel, and saffron, with a potato terrine with lamb sausage, paired well with the 2017 “Marquis de Calon-Ségur” from Château Calon-Ségur from Saint-Estéphe. The lush, smooth, deep purple wine made with 40% merlot and 60% cabernet sauvignon stood up but did not overshadow the lamb. The final official dish in this culinary journey was dessert. Rhubarb with poached egg white balls, “snow eggs,” cherry blossom sorbet, and wood sorrel served with a 2019 Moscato d’ Asti from “La Caliera” from Borgo Maragliano, Piedmont. The wine was ever so sweet and went lovingly with the tart rhubarb. Of course, the final dish at a Michelin-starred restaurant is never truly the end of the journey. A trio of tasty bites serving as dessert included a caramelized banana on top of chocolate cake with hazelnut and Chantilly cream with vanilla, a pistachio macaron, and a cone filled with strawberries, sweet basil pesto, and almonds. Executive Chef Bobby Bräuer and his staff make dining at BMW Welt a truly magnificent experience. The dishes are creative, tasty, and Instagram-worthy, the wines are well-paired and decadent, and the staff is professional and engaging. On your next trip to Munich, Germany, book dinner at EssZimmer, enjoy the spectacular ambiance, and appreciate the beautiful cars at BMW Welt.

MEET JIMMY OPHORST OF PRU, PHUKET’S ONLY MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANT | BY FELICITY CARTER

A

t the luxury, tranquil Trisara resort in Phuket, you’ll find the revered chef Jimmy Ophorst of PRU Restaurant. It’s the first and only restaurant in Phuket to have received a Michelin star. Taking its name and inspiration from land and sea, expect dishes that are influenced by the different ecosystems of Thailand, combining local ingredients with culinary creativity and innovation. Further incorporating sustainability into PRU, its process, and its dishes, the restaurant has its very own farm—making the most of the produce lifecycle while ensuring hyper-locality, taste, and quality. Jimmy shares his culinary journey to dates—the highs, the Michelin star, and what we can expect from PRU’s menu.

Can you tell us a little about yourself, how you started at Elzenduin, and where you’ve worked? At the moment, I am 33 years old, and I was born in the Netherlands. I started working at a local cafeteria when I was 15, and this made me decide to go to the Hotel school. Since then cooking has been a big part of my life. During my time at the Hotel school, I started working at a local steak house, and this is where I learned things the hard way. After the steakhouse, I moved on to work at Elzenduin, which was at that time one of the most innovative restaurants in the Netherlands. Then in 2012, I moved to Thailand to support a new restaurant as a consultant. Here I discovered that this was the country I would grow up in. Since 2014 I have been full-time at Trisara, which led us to

90 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

the opening of PRU in December 2016. Who has been your biggest influence to get you to where you are today? As of today, I am sure it’s my son. He and my wife are the ones who saved my life and gave me a different perspective on life. They make sure that I can chase my dreams. Apart from them, I strongly believe that you have to create your own identity, which is one reason I have never worked in a Michelin Star restaurant. I wanted to create something that was 100% of myself. How would you describe your cooking style? It’s a showcase of unknown Thai ingredients prepared in our own way. It’s not Thai, it’s not

R E STAU RANTS

European, it’s PRU. Tell us about the sustainable approach at PRU. At PRU sustainability comes from the heart. It’s not something we developed during the opening of the restaurant, for example; it’s something that is here. It’s part of our soul. At PRU we have a luxury product (the food and the service), and sustainability comes with it. It’s not something we try to add because I think that’s not the right way of thinking sustainable. It has to come from the heart and not just add to your philosophy because others are doing it. Which dish would you currently recommend and why? One of our signatures is the Aged Duck, it’s a

recipe that I have made into perfection for the past five years, and I am sure to say that you are not able to get this anywhere else in the world. How do you balance creativity and innovation at PRU? What we do at PRU is create a unique dining experience by drawing inspiration from around Thailand. We can fuel our creativity by discovering local ingredients and herbs that are not overly familiar. At PRU we don’t stick to the tried and tested. So, it’s hard to say that we are “authentically” anything beyond staying true to our philosophy of utilizing local ingredients in the most creative way possible. However, there’s inspiration from authentic Thai dishes. Creativity doesn’t arrive to order; it only comes when the brain is free to create. And most of our

invention comes from the farmers, who send me products I’ve never worked with before; this is innovation for me, to create something from the unknown. What’s been your career highlights to date? For sure, the recognition of Michelin by earning our first Michelin Star in November 2018. Another highlight is that we will open PRU 2.0 by October, which will be an award of my career so far. More of this to come. When you’re not in the kitchen, where can you be found? I can be found spending time with my family, whether it’s just in the backyard of our house, at the farm, or anywhere. It will always be with the three of us.

The Most Sophisticated

ULTRA-PREMIUM RUM IN THE WORLD | BY KEVIN PILLEY

The Black Stuff (Guinness) and whiskey with an ‘e’ and perhaps Coole Swan and Baileys are Ireland’s most famous drinks. But what about rum? One of a new generation of Irish rum makers claims to make “the world’s most sophisticated ultra-premium rum.” Akal Chai Rum blends single estate high-altitude Darjeeling tea with natural and rare botanicals through the “Méthode Sillage” to age the spirit. “Using European oak barrels, and in some cases that are 45 years or older, adds an amazing layer of complexity,” says Kiran Akal, who sources his rum from his birthplace, Trinidad & Tobago. “When the aging process is transferred to a moist, cooler climate like that of Ireland, the alcohol behaves differently. The rum tempers differently. Surprising notes emerge because the liquid in the barrel ‘breathes’ so differently. All Irish rums are distilled in a different way, but each bottle reflects a sense of place.” Trinidad-born Kiran Shiva Akal is no ordinary rum maker. He is the nephew of the writer, VS Naipaul. He is also the owner and founder of The SMAKS Luxury Group. He is an artist and composer, currently signed to Warner Music, and holds the world’s only known copyright on reworking a Mozart composition. “I created a piece of music under Warner Chappel publishing where I combine three movements from Mozart’s Requiem into a single new piece. Called Rex, it utilized the Dies Ire from the Requiem, the Lacrimosa, and the Rex Tremendae. I slowed the Dies Irae to half speed and made it a solo for mezzo-soprano. I used the Rex Tremendae Choral arrangement and took the Lacrimosa Introitus and re-arranged that. All of it was put into a single

piece. The piece was given publishing copyright as a new piece rather than as a Mozart ‘remix.’ Effectively, it was the first known publishing right granted to the reworking of a Mozart work.” Kiran Shiva Akal was the Visual Consultant for the City of Paris’s Bastille Day celebrations when his creative concept resulted in an unprecedented opportunity for Steel Band and Mas art from Trinidad. He was arguably the youngest Commissioner General ever appointed to a World’s Fair when he held the post at 27 from 1990-1992 in Seville, Spain. Kiran has been a creative consultant to all of Walt Disney’s major theme Parks in Orlando. He is also an installation artist and regularly participates in Miami Art Week, including ART Basel, where he was named one of the top 15 exhibits of 2006 for his exhibition Liquid Sapphire, part of the internationally acclaimed “Inspired” series by Bombay Sapphire. His exhibition at the Mandarin Oriental in 2010 for Art Asia, in association with the Guggenheim, broke attendance records when over 1500 people attended the opening of his work “Hidden Flower.” In 2010, Kiran was named one of Florida’s “100 Most Influential Creative Thinkers” by the Florida International Design Magazine. In 2013, he was awarded the Design Star of the Americas award for Visual Design. Kiran is also the Creative Director of SMAKS, a family tea business. In 2013, he won an Ideas to Innovation Award from the Government of Trinidad & Tobago for an innovative idea to create a new category of rum called Chai Rum. All the rums are brought to Ireland “to breathe and sing,” and are re-stored in the town of Ballina in County Mayo.

Kiran said, “In Trinidad, many of our educators were from Ireland. I went to St Mary’s College in Port of Spain run by Irish Catholic priests, the order of The Holy Ghost Fathers. I won a Cambridge A-Level Scholarship there, and the natural connection was to look at Ireland. I studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, where I graduated with a degree in Medicine and Surgery with a Bachelor of Obstetrics.” Kiran spent his clinical years at Dublin’s Richmond, Jervis Street and Holles Street hospitals. He served his internship in Trinidad at The Mount Hope Maternity Hospital and has a home in Co Mayo. Kiran says, “The rum was originally launched as a concept in 2014 in Trinidad but did not get into real production until 2016. The initial production of a couple hundred cases was funded by a grant won from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, who were looking for ideas that could grow into Global businesses. This competitive grant program was called Ideas to Innovation, and I won the highest grant of TT 250,000 dollars or 25K pounds at the time. I also worked with the Caribbean Industrial Research Institute based at the University of The West Indies in Trinidad to develop this new process. It took us 24 months from 2012 to 2014, but it resulted in a real step forward for rum.” “I was driven by the idea that aside from age statements and flavoring, there really was a dearth of innovation in the rum space. From Champagne to Sauternes to Grappa to Campari and Vermouth. I felt inspired by how traditions of wine and spirit-making evolved to produce new expressions. Rather than do ‘more of the same,’ I set out to discover and create something that could create a legacy family

brand, rooted in the history of rum making and my own fifth-generation family story but squarely looking into the future. I saw no point in being a commodity or a category. It was going to be an exciting new product or bust,” said Kiran. Kiran continued further by saying, “I never fit into the linear picture one is brainwashed into believing is ‘life.’ I have medicine and Ireland to thank for allowing me to leave medical school not with a vocation but with a different philosophical perspective. I like the Bauhaus idea that poetry, philosophy, art, architecture, and scientific pursuits are not divided but are part of a holistic expression. Linear thinking has been the source of much global agony. We need to be in touch with both sides of our brain and to be in touch with all of our senses.” The rum was born from helping his mother rebrand a tea brand for her boutique in Trinidad. Kiran said, “And frankly, I needed to provide a platform to express myself creatively. I hope that the brand will grow beyond rum into a platform that can be used for multiple artistic expressions. I’m reversing the ‘starving artist

needs sponsor’ model. I’m going to sponsor our own artistic projects that are supported by the brand. Artist and Brand as one.” Akal rums are currently available through e-commerce platforms in the US- Reservebar. com, which allows them to ship to some 34 states. According to Kiran, “Our rums were selected to partner with the newly launched Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection Cruise line, and we began supplying the line in September of 2022.” Kiran also shared that, “Our smoking kits are unique. Unlike other systems, which use chips and multiple parts, the kit uses kiln-dried, sustainably sourced wood cut to maximize smoke; the process takes 7 seconds compared to the cloche or ‘sombrero’ wood smoking methods. The kit features three wood types chosen for their aromatic and mystical properties: cedar for eternity, cherry for love, and maple for balance. Each one modulates the experience of the rum differently and makes for a dramatic serving method that can easily be done for larger groups in a matter of minutes due to the simplicity of the process.”

94 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

Kiran said, “We are the makers of the world’s first authentic botanical rum. The production process is a recognized trade secret. The results are rums of unparalleled smoothness and aroma. The molasses-based column distillation with Trinidad yeast fermentation creates rums with floral notes unique to our island. Our limited edition cuvées are aged in yet another trade secret process in the cooler, wetter climates of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Here, our techniques coax unexpected new notes from the slightly overproof cuvées. The three cuvées are an XO Cognac cuvée called Le Sanglier; an Irish Single Malt cuvée called Fia Rua; and an Amontillado del Puerto 45 yo Sherry Cask called El Toro.” Kiran closed the conversation and said, “We have also collaborated with one of the world’s most famous Japanese ceramic houses to create a special serving vessel and cups that take inspiration from our rum’s connection to the world of tea.”

KOLLÁZ, BRASSERIE & BAR | BY TRACY ELLEN BEARD PHOTOS COURTESY OF FOUR SEASONS HOTEL GRESHAM PALACE BUDAPEST

Kollázs – Brasserie & Bar is a contemporary European restaurant in the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest that opened in 2015. Kollázs is the Hungarian word for “collage.” The brasserie highlights creative and innovative combinations in every aspect of the dining experience. Kollázs boasts a contemporary dining concept with a modern take on European cuisine and features exciting Hungarian signature specialties.

during our European adventure. He loved the variations and especially enjoyed the one he had out on the terrace with salmon and asparagus. I perused the buffet selections each morning, which offered meats, cheeses, fruits, pastries, eggs, and hot breakfast entrees. There was a plethora of options sure to please everyone’s morning appetites.

Kollázs consists of several exciting parts: the bar, wine cellar, patisserie, the indoor dining area, and the all-season terrace. The vibe is trendy and comfortable, the perfect place for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just drinks. Executive Chef Árpád Győrffy and his team serve authentic, rustic brasserie dishes with a twist.

One evening, we met with Executive Chef Árpád Győrffy, and he put together a blind-tasting dinner for the two of us to enjoy. The chef said, “I often change the menu, sometimes daily, depending on the season or my mood.” He said that he felt that serving us this menu was a good representation of what the restaurant had to offer.

BREAKFAST AT KOLLÁZS

We began with some sparkling wine paired with a couple of amusebouche dishes. One was a small salad wrapped in prosciutto; the other was veal sweetbreads with green asparagus and morel sauce. Then we moved on to a sauvignon blanc made especially for the brasserie. This wine was a Hungarian sauvignon blanc made from grapes harvested

My husband Steve and I stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest for a few nights in the late spring this year. We enjoyed breakfast each morning. Steve was on a quest for the best Eggs Benedict 98 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

in the northeast corner of Hungary from the Zemplén mountains. It was fresh and dry with a nice acidity and minerality. White asparagus is in season in the late spring in Germany, so it is on almost every menu. Ours was served with hollandaise and a green sauce. It was delicious. The asparagus was crisp and sweet. The sauce added decadence and creaminess to the dish. The asparagus, which is challenging to pair, went well with the sauvignon blanc. Our next wine was from the famous Tokaj Wine Region. The Tokaj Wine Region is legendary because the Tokaji Aszú wine made there is one of the world’s best naturally sweet wines. Travelers also visit the region for the popular furmint and hárslevelű grape varieties. Our wine was made with the furmint grape,

Hungary’s most famous varietal. This wine, Oremus Mandolas, is made by the renowned Spanish winemaker Vega Sicilia. With its high acidity, minerality, and lemon citrus and green apple notes, the Mandolas wine paired with the green pea soup topped with crème fraiche was a marriage made in heaven. The next dish was a perfectly prepared Trout A La Parisienne over spinach. It was served with a citrusy Far & Near 2019 Chenin Blanc. A red wine from the southern part of Hungary followed the trout. This wine, specially labeled for Kollázs, is made from 100% cabernet franc grapes and is a medium to full-bodied wine with cherry and tobacco notes. The wine paired beautifully with our main course of Tournedo Steak with foie gras, morel mushrooms, mashed potatoes, and Bordelaise sauce.

As is typically on a tasting menu, we had more than one dessert. The first was a dish with meringues, sorrel sorbet, and raspberries, served with Cava bubbles from Spain. The final dessert was the chef ’s famous French Toast with fresh strawberries, strawberry gel, and strawberry ice cream. The chef said, “The French Toast dessert took months to perfect and several revisions to get exactly to my liking.” It was fabulous. The chef starts with brioche bread, soaks it in crème brulee liquid, steams it in the oven, rolls it in sugar, and then it is fried in butter. The dessert was served with the famous sweet wine Tokaji Aszú. Kollázs is an incredibly delicious place to eat any time, and we both enjoyed our blind-tasting menu and the scrumptious breakfasts each morning.

BLADNOCH ULTRA RARE WHISKY COLLECTION | BY KEVIN PILLEY

Derived from the Scots Gaelic word meaning ‘symbol’ or ‘likeness,’ Samhla is a family of exceptionally rare single malt whiskies embodying three generations of the history of Scotland’s oldest still-producing distillery.

Label are examples, and they bear no date. But Bladnoch’s 15-year-old Adela and the $571.99 25-year-old Talia do. Former Master Distiller of The Macallan, Dr Nick Savage, succeeded him as Bladnoch’s Master Distiller.

The £5250( $6700) ultra-rare luxury collection includes three vintages: The McClelland, distilled in 1966 and limited to only 15 bottles; The Prior, distilled in 1990 and limited to 50 bottles; and The Sage, distilled in 2008 and limited to 100 bottles. Bladnoch is based in Wigtown, Dumfries, and Galloway in the Lowlands of south-west Scotland. It is the most southerly whisky distillery in Scotland.

The 1966 whisky is Bladnoch’s oldest release to date and matures in an American oak cask.

Founded by John and Thomas McClelland in 1817, the historic distillery has been closed many times. The mothballed distillery was discovered by the Armstrong Brothers in 1994. In 2009, it produced a single malt but went into administration in 2014 before Australian yogurt entrepreneur David Prior bought it. Two years later came master distiller Ian MacMillan’s no-age statement Samsara. If a whisky has met its minimum aging requirements in the country of origin, there needn’t be an age listed on the label. Jack Daniel’s, Jameson, and Johnnie Walker Red

The 1990 vintage was distilled in the same year Prior began his entrepreneurial journey and is said to encapsulate his vision and leadership in restoring the distillery as the heart of the local community. Its aroma is rich with licorice sticks, dried apricots, and dark dates, and its finish is long and viscous with a slight pepperiness. The Sage was distilled in 2008—the year Prior’s daughter, Sage, was born. The expression, “Drawn from two American oak red wine hogsheads,” of innovative casks of the highest quality in its warehouses so that it can one day hand over a ‘treasure chest’ of whisky to the next generation.

Prior says, “In recent years, we have witnessed an unprecedented surge in the appreciation and demand for rare whiskies, with collectors and enthusiasts recognizing their inherent value as both liquid assets and cultural artifacts. These extraordinary expressions, carefully crafted over time, embody the essence of craftsmanship, history, and exclusivity that discerning investors seek.” Bladnoch also recently released its Dragon Series—a collection of five single malts celebrating the ‘natural unpredictability’ of whisky making. “The Samhla Collection is a tribute to the ‘authentic human’ relationships that have shaped Bladnoch’s legacy. It symbolizes the preservation of a legacy that has weathered the test of time,” adds Prior. “The Samhla Collection stands as a tribute to the remarkable journey Bladnoch has undertaken. It is a privilege to ensure its continued existence and to carry the torch of tradition, innovation, and excellence for generations yet to come.” Those interested in purchasing can register their interest at www.bladnoch.com/thesamhlacollection.

It boasts flavors of black cherries with strawberry jam and cracked black pepper.

Perhaps in the coming age, our inventions will reveal colors we never imagined, and we will see the world as never before.” On a different day, we attended the Herend Afternoon Tea, where we dined on Traditional Scones with Devonshire clotted cream, strawberry jam, and classic lemon curd, Smoked Duck Ham buns with pickled carrot and elderflower, and Vanilla Rooibos tea. The food, drinks, and atmosphere at Múzsa are spectacular, and the Four Seasons Gresham Palace Budapest offers glorious modern accommodations while simultaneously stepping back in time to the Golden Age.

Today, Múzsa offers guests a unique selection of pastries and tea cakes served in the famous Herend Porcelain hand-painted sets, The Royal Garden, while enjoying live piano, cymbal, or harp music. Tea is served between 3 pm and 6 pm every Saturday and Sunday. OUR VISITS TO MÚZSA This year, my husband Steve and I visited Budapest in the late spring. We sampled a few intriguing cocktails one evening. Steve enjoyed the Dragon’s Blood. It was a nutty, flavorful drink made with Macallan 12 Y Double cask scotch whisky, Múzsa’s macadamia malt & maple, cherry heering, and Verjus. It was delicious, and the bar notes said, “It is a love spell written in dragon’s blood that tells a tale of desire. The color of vitality, heat, love, and passion says it all without breathing a word.” I sampled Ivory, a silky mellow beverage made with lemon cachaca, lychee, sour meringue, chestnut and chocolate pepper horchata. The bar notes read, “A most rare and beautiful flower blooms only in the pure ivory light of the full moon. Her scent is intoxicating; to encounter her is a religious experience. This cocktail was luscious and fruity without being too sweet. I enjoyed a second cocktail, the Violet, a crisp floral drink made with Four Pillars shiraz gin, acai, lemon, Aronia, and cassie. 103 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | OCT/NOV 2023

BENTLEY RESIDENCES of MIAMI | BY KEVIN PILLEY

entley offers some of the most sought-after cars in the world. Now the iconic British car company is offering some of the most desirable residences in Miami. The company has diversified from coveted cars to coveted addresses. With Dezer Development, the famous luxury marque is collaborating on its debut Bentley Residences project, set to complete in 2026. It comprises a suite of communal amenities varying from a wellness center to a cinema, complementing the 216 exquisitely furnished apartments. Florida’s latest paragon of design brilliance is showcased at the newly-opened sales gallery in Sunny Isles Beach, Miami. The 12,000 square foot gallery with eye-catching Bentley sculpture offers buyers a first-hand glimpse at its residences’ private beachfront one-of-a-kind development.

Bentley designers Brett Boydell and Chris Cooke lead the company’s first real estate venture, working closely with Dezer Development and Sieger Suarez Architects. Boydell, Bentley’s Head of Design Collaborations, says, “One of the biggest achievements when we design a car is to have a whole group of designers working together but to make it look like it came from one person’s hand. We have the same exciting challenge with Bentley Residences but on a 70-story scale.” He continues, “In reality, each element has been considered, understood, and designed by the Bentley Design Team, by our partners at Dezer Development, and by Sieger Suarez Architects, but the overall effect is seamless.” Bentley’s Product and Lifestyle Design Manager Cooke adds, “We have applied the same attention to detail that goes into our cars into this very building. Each space is different, but with distinctive Bentley design cues styled harmoniously throughout.” A sense of harmony is something that has been carefully considered. The concept of indoor-outdoor living was fundamental to Bentley. Cooke adds, “Our customers

enjoy the feeling of being out on the open road, just as much as being cocooned within the comfort of their car cabins!” As to the design, each residence will have an individual balcony swimming pool and unobstructed views through seamless floor-to-ceiling glass. Diamond-shaped glass panels adorning the building’s façade are explicitly angled to create perfect natural light refraction. The same patterns and silhouettes echo throughout the building with diamond-shaped tiles on the lobby floor. The diamond motif is a signature of Bentley’s design DNA, found throughout the brand’s products and cars. “The environment of each communal area of the Bentley Residences has been carefully considered. The aim is to bring residents together as a community, fostering an atmosphere of relaxation while still remaining social,” continues Cooke. Everything about it reflects Bentley’s design language. Key to the experience is being able to drive right up to your home, thanks to the four “Dezervators” – patented hydraulic elevators built to transport drivers and their vehicles directly to their units. Owner’s cars are identified upon arrival, thanks to an RFID sticker positioned in the vehicle. A special LED lighting system then guides drivers to one of the Dezervators that takes them straight to their residence. As the Dezervator moves up through the building, communal areas show through the elevator shaft’s glass walls. The process is seamless, with no buttons to press. Private and communal amenities include a cinema, a game room, a wellness center and spa, a whisky bar, a cigar lounge, and a restaurant. Cooke explains that the movie house design mimics the concept of a Bentley car interior, “A cosseting sofa wraps around the back of the rear three walls, embracing residents in the space.” The game room is state-of-the-art, equipped with V.R. headsets and simulators for golf

The Bentley furniture range is hand-crafted in Italy, with the lines, materials, and finishes of Bentley’s cars as inspiration. The lobby will feature some impressive pillars; each threaded with the vertical veins of the natural wood used, ingrained with copper dust to add a subtle, metallic finish; a technique used in Bentley’s concept car, the EXP 100 GT. Cooke adds, “It is really important that as many materials as possible are locally sourced and that

each and every element matches the same exacting quality standards of the materials found within Bentley’s cars. Natural materials feature heavily throughout the building, and some key components are wood, leather, and glass – drawing parallels with Bentley cars. The exciting thing for the Bentley design team was to be able to take the same materials and go above and beyond anything that can be achieved in a car, making use of the substantially larger space and diversity of areas.” Boydell explains, “I think it’s the approach to every element within the Bentley Residences

which gives that feeling of harmonious and inspiring design. This runs throughout everything from the materials, to the colors, and the richness of all the execution is synonymous with what you would find in our cars.” Car salesman W.O. PROTECTING WELSH WHISKY | BY KEVIN PILLEY

W

elsh whisky can now be distilled without fear of imitation. Single malt Welsh whisky has received UK Geographical Indication (UK GI), which protects its name, authenticity, and characteristics. Single Malt Welsh whisky is the twentieth product from Wales to gain protected status, which also includes Welsh wine and cider, Caerphilly Cheese, Anglesey Sea Salt PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), PGI Welsh Lamb, PGI Welsh Beef, and Welsh Leeks PGI. But Welsh whisky is the first new UK spirit drink application to be registered and protected under the new scheme, established in 2021 following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. Welsh single malt is currently being exported to more than 45 countries. It is forecasted to generate a revenue of £23 million (US$29.5m) in the current financial year, including domestic, export, and travel retail sales. Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn Whisky, describes the achievement as a “significant milestone” for the broader Welsh whisky category.” It assists in safeguarding both the quality of the product and its source of origin.” Co-owner and director of the Welsh Wind Distillery, Ellen Wakelam comments, “Not only does it place single malt Welsh whisky within the wider Welsh GI family of iconic products, giving consumers an understanding of the provenance and integrity of the product, but the research we’re carrying out with the Open University suggests that our local barley and

onsite malting combines to produce a whisky that will have a flavor profile unique to the area of Wales where the barley is grown.” Whiskys made by the Coles family at the White Hart Inn, Llanddarog, Carmarthen, Aber Falls, and Da Milhe at Glynhynod Farm, Llandysul, Ceredigion, are similarly protected. In 1992, Dà Mhìle commissioned the world’s first modern-era organic whisky distilled at Springbank in Scotland. The single malt was a oneoff batch to celebrate the millennium. Dà Mhìle is Gaelic for 2000, and it then worked with Loch Lomond on the first organic single grain, distilled in 2000. The distillery opened in 2012. The whiskys were the brainchild of the founder of “Teifi Farmhouse Cheese,” John Savage-Onstwedder. Although whisky was allegedly made in Wales as far back as the Middle Ages, the modern Welsh whisky industry was kick-started in 2000, when Penderyn, Wales’ oldest commercial whisky distillery, started distilling the spirit, launching in 2004. Wales now has six distilleries (including Anglesey Môn). South Wales’s Penderyn distillery and brand, founded on St. David’s Day 2004 and opened by the then HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, produced the first commercially available whisky made in Wales since the nineteenth century. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Penderyn announced a new site in the historic town of Llandudno in north Wales. It is now in full production.

It also produces Brecon Botanicals Gin, Five Vodka, Merlyn Cream Liqueur, and Siddiqui Brown Rum. It boasts an all-women distillery team, Bethan Morgans, Aiste Phillips, and Laura Davies. Wales claims to have produced the first alcoholic spirit in the British Isles. The monks of Bardsey Island, or Yns Enlli, “the island of the saints,” produced a spirit in 356 AD for the great Welsh warrior Reaullt Gir. “Chwisgi” was a mead made with honey. Penderyn Distillery, near Aberdare in the south of the Brecon Beacons National Park, uses a uniquely designed still for its malt whisky distillation. The still consists of a single “pot” beneath a tall rectifying column and was developed by a team led by Dr. David Faraday, a descendant of Sir Michael Faraday, who discovered the electrolytic cell. The last distillery, RJ Lloyd Price of Frongoch, was liquidated in 1910. It was founded in 1887. The first attempts to revive the tradition ended when Welsh distillers were sued by their Scottish counterparts for bottling Scottish blends. The Aber Falls Distillery in Abergwyngregynm in the Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd, north Wales, commenced spirit production in 2017. The distillery, located near the well-known Rhaeadr waterfall, used to be a slate works, a margarine factory, and a drinks wholesaler depot. 
