PUBLISHER’S NOTES susen sawatzki

Do you feel that 2016 will usher in an era of re-invention, transformation, and self discovery? There have been an unusual amount of conversations already in this first month of the new year about the desire, and in some cases, desperation for change—that it’s time to re-invent. There is at least one scheduled change ahead, that of electing a new president of the United States. And maybe that’s what’s got all the energy in an uproar. Regardless, what is it about change that has a tendency to unravel us? When I think of nature, does the rose fret about opening its pedals under the warmth of the summer sun? Does the rose think it has a choice of whether to bloom and then wilt? And if it did imagine that it

4

somehow was in control, would it smell as sweet? What if we could slip into a state of mind where we relaxed and allowed a simple, peaceful unfolding of our lives like the rose? If we still had our will and our preferences and our creativity but we could also watch the beauty and simplicity of our lives opening in bloom? If that one, internal shift began germinating, there would be much less focus on the external world of our expectations and the need to measure our happiness or unhappiness, our satisfaction or dissatisfaction and constantly be monitoring if we are

indeed pleased with the outcome of an experience on a scale of 1 to 10. Truth, integrity, values and the likes serve as emotional iconology used as guardrails to help us measure whether we can feel safe, joyous, and worthy. It is that we desire to have an external measure which requires the judgment and approval of others for us to validate our self-esteem. We place this demand of validation on every relationship, resulting in the experience of co-dependent narcissism. One of the elements of my personal change is to set the world around me free of being my mirror and instead, look through the eyes of acceptance.

INCENTIVES

The Utah Film Commission’s The Amplifying Effect of Investing in Imagination

Many Park City residents became used to seeing Hollywood stars this year and, for once, it wasn’t during the annual Sundance Film Festival. Both ABC and HBO spent months in the local ski town filming two large productions: ABC with its new network series Blood & Oil and HBO with Steven Soderbergh’s latest project, Mosaic. Utah’s iconic scenery provides majestic settings and acts as an effective lure for tourists, businesses and, increasingly, film producers. The ease of transitioning from beautiful wild spaces to urban centers, often located within an hour or less of each other, is just one of the reasons filmmakers come to Utah. Virginia Pearce, Utah Film Commission Director, explains, “Our locations are dramatic and diverse. Mountains always come to mind when people think of Utah but we really have everything from open stretches of desert wilderness and red rock canyons to bustling hangouts and rural towns—as well as the picturesque peaks and greatest snow on earth. We have a deep and lasting commitment to the entertainment industry, with more than 900 films having been made in Utah, and our locations are definitely a contributing factor.” For the last 20 years, states and countries have realized that film productions can provide a huge influx of income, and have been steadily building incentive programs that encourage producers to consider alternatives to Hollywood. While filming, productions spend money on salaries for local crews, lodging and equipment, set building materials, permitting fees and travel and transportation, but the direct investment into a local economy isn’t the only benefit. Film production also acts as a billboard for the location, almost like a covert but powerful tourism brochure.

6

F IL M A NNU AL 2016

“The benefits of film production reach far beyond financials,” said Vicki Varela, Managing Director of Tourism, Film and Global Branding for the state of Utah. “Film production builds Utah’s brand as a beautiful place for tourists to visit, and as a place that welcomes the creative class.” ABC’s Blood and Oil series filmed in Utah for these very reasons. The show was set in North Dakota, yet filmed in Northern Utah and staged at the Park City Film Studios as the producers and directors found the industry in Utah to be so much more robust. Says Josh Pate, the show’s co-creator, “We looked into filming in North Dakota, but there are more resources in Utah.” Location and local resources don’t win all film battles, however, as most large productions now rely on state tax incentive programs to finalize the deal. Utah’s film incentive program is solid and stable and has a number of advantages, but it’s also relatively small with a $6.79 million cap per year, which means that many potential studios may overlook Utah.

Motion Picture Incentive Program The economic benefit in terms of both direct and indirect investments in tourism and business that come from film productions can be very large—especially in the case of long-running TV series. For that reason, locations all around the world compete heavily to win the interest of studios and land longterm deals. Film incentive programs are a key element in this competition for attention. According to Marshall Moore, Marketing Director for Park City Film Studios and former Director of the Utah Film Commission, Touched by an Angel, the long-running television series from the late 1990s created an economic impact of more than $225 million in Utah. He points out that a current network TV series or two would be key to stabilizing and growing the film business in Utah, but the current incentive maxes out too low to attract and sustain the big names. According to Marshall, the major studios are looking for about 25 percent on a $30 million budget, or roughly $7-8 million. Utah’s program offers up to 25 percent, which is good, but it caps out at about

Utah has just about everything else going for it, says Virginia, “We have talent, locations, equipment, experience, infrastructure, and we’re a convenient 90-minute flight from L.A. The new Park City Film Studios gives Utah’s industry that extra boost. We’re film ready here.” The benefits of film production to the economy of Utah are undeniable. Virginia said, “In the 2014 fiscal year alone, 23 projects filmed in Utah and spent more than $20 million here. Since the incentive program’s inception in 2011, more than $195 million has been spent in the state, and 27% of that is in rural areas.” How much of the positive press regarding Utah as a great state for business comes as a result of the halo effect of film productions? How many people and even businesses visit Utah as a result of seeing the state in a film and then stay to bolster the local econ-

major studios are looking for about 25 percent on a $30 million budget, or roughly $7-8 million. Utah’s program offers up to 25 percent, which is good, but it caps out at about $6.79 million – just short of that mark. $6.79 million – just short of that mark. Jeff Miller, President of Vineyard Productions and President of the Motion Picture Association of Utah, agrees. He reports that Utah’s program is very consistent and solid, also pointing out that money in the program is set aside at the time of agreement, meaning that a studio will get the incentive as long the conditions are met. Jeff explains, in programs for other states, the incentives are sometimes paid out on a first-come, firstserved basis, meaning that late completion could result in the funds being depleted and the studio getting less than expected—or even nothing at all.

omy? Even making film scenes as a tourist destination? What happens when you infuse rural economies with $32 million in film-related spending? What is the long-term benefit of that short-term spend? Although ABC’s Blood and Oil will not be renewed, the production still spent more than $20 million in Utah and created 600 new jobs. Landing that series also opened doors for future productions and additional growth in Utah’s film industry, so the only question remaining is whether the state can furnish the incentives to support that growth.

BYUtv - Proof that Content is Still King Scott Swofford’s line-up of programming provides vital nutrition to Utah’s production community

A testament to the power of content, BYUtv went from zero to the most ubiquitous channel in the U.S. in 15 years. When Derek Marquis, director of BYU Broadcasting saw an opportunity to make one of their signals, BYUtv “watchable” he recruited a known and proven talent. The signal came into being in 2000 when the FCC required broadcast entities to have a signal dedicated to educational and community purposes. BYU Broadcasting applied for a license, got it and had to be on air 24-hours a day within the week. The station aired a speech by LDS Church leader Gordon B. Hinckley when he addressed the student body of Brigham Young University. That speech ran on a loop 24 hours a day reaching 60 million homes. On the promise of “Keeping You Connected,” messages and events of BYU filled the on-air hours when eventually, Derek recognized a great opportunity. He reached out to Scott Swofford and Scott accepted the challenge to ultimately provide 8,760 hours of television programming per year on BYUtv. Scott says, “I was intrigued by the idea when Derek said, “Let’s change this to the way we want it to be.” Scott knew the components of quality production having been a producer and production manager on dozens of IMAX films shot in 50 countries working with the likes of Disney, Morgan Stanley and National Geographic. Also working on feature films and commercials he later shepherded the campaign called, “I’m a Mormon,” sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) to propose that Mormons come in all shapes and sizes and span the gamut of races, interests and looks. Then, Scott was offered the blank slate of BYUtv. He and Derek, led by several national research firms, put together focus groups that intentionally excluded Mormons and those tending towards atheism. At first, the focus groups proclaimed to be honorable and watch television to be edified, ignobled and educated. However, the list of favorite shows included The Bachelor and American Horror Story. When the truth came out, it boiled down to escapism and entertainment—with a caveat that if there is enough entertainment value, a positive message will be tolerated, or even invited. With the starting point of a universal value, “See the Good in the World,” they created programming that promised escape and entertainment as the sugar on the spoonful of medicine for the soul—A cooking show exploring exotic herbs and grains, Turning Point tells stories that illustrate the pivotal point of change in people’s lives, American Ride, a 8

traveling history lesson from a Harley-riding, charming, bearded history teacher, Legends and The Story Trek are two other programs where inspiring stories of people’s lives come into focus. The sketch comedy show, Studio C is the most popular series and is produced in house. According to Scott, one of Studio C’s sketches hit 200 million views this year. The first three seasons of Granite Flats, BYUtv’s first scripted drama series was purchased by Netflix in 2015. Then there’s the hot topic of sports—BYU football and basketball with inside stories of athletes. The station offers something for every demographic and is available through broadcast in Utah, on 800 cable stations and satellite throughout the country, and for the chord cutters, BYUtv is available on more app platforms than many other networks— more than ABC, CBS—and the installs grow at an average of 7,000 per week. It also has its own app and programs can be viewed on its website, BYUtv.org. This seems inconceivable—an overnight success on a modest to low budget. BYUtv is not for profit and development is funded by a patchwork of sources including BYU, the LDS Church, grants, local sponsors and donors. The station is doing something that nobody else is doing, according to Scott; “Our goal is to highlight amazing stories through great story telling that are appropriate and appealing to sophisticated audiences of all ages.” Which breaks all the rules of marketing where you are only allowed ONE target audience. This tack has garnered BYUtv 51 Regional Emmys, two features in the New York Times plus other earned media and the most impossible feat—families joining together for appointment television. The series, Granite Flats, began to attract the attention of talent agents and by the second season, the show was featuring Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Finola

Hughes (General Hospital), which led to Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) and Parker Posey (Portlandia) becoming involved. While the pay scale was below what the stars were accustomed to, they loved the experience and believed in the product. More than proof of concept that good scripted material is rare and in demand (as well as on-demand), it proves that it doesn’t take a huge budget or a big studio to make something good. Working with a lean and smart team, Terri Pappas and Jared Shores, the quality of BYUtv’s show line-up would not be possible without Utah’s vast professional network of production talent and crew. The station’s shows are lensed by some of the most talented cinematographers in the country, directed by sought-after, feature, commercial and television directors and supported by Utah’s renowned, seasoned crew. It’s easy to “See the Good in the World” in what BYUtv is doing. First of all, giving birth to content that invites and illustrates values and goodness in the world. Second, it feeds the production industry of Utah with regular jobs and third, it provides a training ground for the next generation of writers, directors, producers, DPs and crew.

R E L AT I V E R A C E

2016 offers up season 11 and 12 of American Ride, season 7 of Studio C and a new show, Relative Race—similar to Amazing Race but in this concept, couples start out in San Francisco and have to get to New York in 10 days relying on the kindness of relatives they have never met. The producers research their respective DNA and give the couples the names and contact information. The rest is yet to come. Not having to rely entirely on ratings, the programs get a chance to find an audience and grow organically—authentically. And the world has spoken; it quite likes the invitation to, “See the Good in the World.”

STEVE OLPIN

The Talking Fly, an Experiment in Passion

After more than two decades as a filmmaker, Steve Olpin fell head over heels for the freedom of YouTube. His YouTube channel, The Talking Fly, is a series of short documentaries that explore the idea of doing, going and giving back. His subjects are artists, musicians, bike riders— people giving back to the world. He calls it a filmmaker’s sketchbook. He says, “As a documentary filmmaker, I sometimes use the term ‘fly on the wall’ to refer to a style of filmmaking that is observational. Yes, I like to observe, but I can’t help myself—I like to talk to the people as I film them, hence, the talking fly...” With experience in many types of filmmaking and commercial production, documentary is Steve’s favorite. His documentaries have shown at the Sundance Film Festival among other national and international film festivals and several of his works have captured prestigious recognition. “I get very excited about passionate people,” says Steve and is himself a passionate person about his YouTube channel which offers a platform where he is directed purely by his curiosity and rewarded by viewers who ask for more.

Nineteen-year-old Kitzia Rodriguez was at the White House in November to receive an award from First Lady Michelle Obama on behalf of Spy Hop, which was recognized for its effectiveness in promoting learning and life skills in young people by mentoring them in the digital media arts, including film, audio, music and design. Spy Hop’s programming received the 2015 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, the nation’s highest honor for out-of-school-time programs. The award recognizes the country’s best creative

youth development programs for using engagement in the arts and the humanities to increase academic achievement, graduation rates, and college enrollment. The awardees—chosen from a pool of more than 350 nominations and 50 finalists—were also recognized for improving literacy and language abilities, communication and performance skills, and cultural awareness. Kitzia said, “Spy Hop has empowered me with the passion and knowledge to become an engaged producer. The program has made me more confident in myself and has given me the opportunity to develop my talents.” Spy Hop was created to mentor young people in the digital media arts to help them find their voice, tell their stories and be empowered to affect positive

change in their lives, their communities and the world. For more than 16 years, the program has engaged nearly 2,000 young people annually by providing high-quality, safe, out-of-school-time programming for K-12 youth. The program fosters personal and artistic expression through the use of emerging digital technologies and the media arts, and develops 21st century educational and workplace readiness skills. In addition to the national recognition with the prestigious award, Spy Hop also received $10,000 to support its programming and engage more young people from the community. “Spy Hop is thrilled to be acknowledged as one of the nation’s most exceptional artistic programs for young people. We’re incredibly proud of the students, mentors, supporters, board and staff who made it possible,” said Kasandra VerBrugghen, executive director of Spy Hop. “We hope this award will draw attention to the fact that programs like Spy Hop are essential investments in the community and the lives of our young people, by helping them find a passion that inspires and motivates them to learn and succeed in their lives.” “You can’t help but be moved by these kids, who show us the transformative power of the arts and humanities,” said Rachel Goslins, executive director of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. “They are staying in school longer, getting better grades, graduating from high school and going on to college at significantly higher rates than their peers. Park City Film Studios recently hosted ABC’s Blood and Oil. Greg Ericksen, studio owner and developer as well as studio marketing manager, Marshall Moore reveled in the opportunity to see every square inch of the studio in use. It was designed to be a fully equipped facility offering sound stages, production offices, wood and metal shops, wardrobe, dressing and make-up and ample parking and storage.

And that it is. It can either serve a large production or several small productions at once and also transform into a venue for events. Utah now has yet another attraction to lure filmmakers and commercial producers from around the world to feel right at home at this remarkable facility.

Genius at a Breakneck Pace

Matias Alvarez (L) and Mark Hofeling (R) had

to become bricks and mortar in order to work for bricks and mortar. Their space has a touch of whimsy with the vintage letter lights and lots of warehouse space to play and create. In the world of creative production, there are a couple words nobody likes to hear: budget and deadline. These concepts sound too much like another word no one likes to hear: limitation. None of us likes being limited, yet limits seem to be part of everyday life. The real genius is to make something so breathtaking that people forget that there were ever limits involved at all. If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting them already, here’s your chance to get to know two individuals who have displayed limitless creativity in the face of all kinds of challenges—and done it in style. With more than 50 cumulative years of film production and design between them, Matias Alvarez and Mark Hofeling of the Creative Services Bureau have seen just about everything. Their client list boasts names like Walt Disney, National Geographic, Warner Brothers, Showtime, and ABC. “Our specialty is creating a lot of beautiful and interesting stuff—fast,” says Matias. They’ve been working together for more than two decades, and between film 16

F IL M A NNU AL 2016

projects, they’ve recently began working with businesses small and large in mediums ranging from video to print to the wide world of the web—and everything in between. They specialize in delivering immersive, experiential solutions within budget under extremely tight deadlines, again, thanks to their background in the rapid-turnaround world of film. “We’re taking our skill set to the civilian world,” says Mark. For example, Airbnb came to them about building a space for Sundance in 2014. However, rather than wanting a booth where the company could push something on visitors, Airbnb wanted a homey, comfortable place where people could escape the madness of the rest of the festival and unwind for a bit. They were then put in touch with a local architecture firm, and together they renovated a small storefront into a beautiful space that felt like a down-to-earth Swedish cottage—start to finish in just 24 days. The setting proved to be a success, and Airbnb came back to them to work their magic again for 2015.

Mark and Matias form a dynamic duo of designer and producer. Mark’s specialty, honed through 60 films in the course of only 25 years, is production design. He knows how to envision something beautiful and then manage a crew to make dreams into reality. Matias has won filmmaking awards from the Director’s Guild of America three times thanks to his ability to orchestrate and manage all the moving pieces of a production—from creatives to laborers to office accountants. Because of their background and skill, they are invited to create and produce short-term, one-off projects with a defined lifetime, projects like The Living Room—the Utah Film Commission’s activation space on Main Street in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival. These projects come naturally for the duo because of their history with film production and having perfected the art and science of creating the interior of illusion. And while in-store design isn’t a set on a soundstage, Mark and Matias know how to design a space to create an immersive experience—and how that

ALVAREZ / HOFELING Creative Services Bureau feeling needs to evolve over time. Recently, they’ve been exploring a new outlet for their creative immersion through museum sets and other, more permanent pieces. For example, The Leonardo, a local museum, hosted nearly 30 different exhibits in just three years and was ready for more permanence. Needing a quick turn and a spectacular result, they approached Mark and Matias about building an exhibition space that would stand for five years and then travel. In providing guidance to the duo, the museum visioned them with the concept, “Flight”—and that was it. With one word, a tight deadline, and a small budget, Mark and Matias were turned loose to create something beautiful, transformative, and lasting—something that the museum could later send around the country as a traveling exhibit. Building such a space is a new challenge that pulls on their combined skills and keeps the duo sharp. They have the challenge of designing a space that incorporates the museum’s content while also providing both a physical and a metaphysical experience to patrons. But the real challenges come from the real-world aspects of the project. With a film set, there’s no real concern that 200 first-graders might come in and jump around for an hour; the set will be torn down again in a matter of days or weeks anyway. With a museum space, that’s a very real concern, so it’s an additional realm building to code with all the safety and fire-suppression concerns that come into play. Layer upon layer of red tape is a new challenge, but it’s one that they conquer daily. Never afraid of new challenges, they look at each other, shrug their shoulders, laugh and say something clever and sarcastic—wit and humor being the glue that keeps the two aligned and moving forward. Atlas Architects engaged them in a oneof-a-kind project. Atlas’ new office space will have a restaurant and bar as well as

coming soon to the Leonardo is being teased with this structure designed for robust climbing, general horsing around and viral selfies. be a bricks and mortar, living and breathing monument to Utah’s unique history of labor—particularly the hand-crafted work. For Mark and Matias, this has become an opportunity to reach back through the timeline and depict it experientially through stunning visuals. Who knows what else will arrive through the doors of this versatile bureau, but we’re going to keep an eye out. Could be a full-scale feature film or a temporary space to conduct a focus group.

The two joke about how they would run the business into the ground without each other, but together they form an ironclad whole. Their skill sets complement one another very well, making them a lifelong team that can solve nearly any creative problem. To sum up their work in a single word, you could simply say, “Genius.” by Jonathan Richards

Celebrating Don Schain Have you ever met someone who was bigger than life? Someone who made such a big impact that his influence will continue like a legend to touch his friends and colleagues far into the future? Don Schain was just such a person. He was a person who knew how to get things done—and he got a lot of things done, including more than 50 films.

“For a life that touched so many, it should be celebrated. He was a champion of the state and recognized the talented professionals in this state. This gracious, intelligent man was a force to be reckoned with. He would walk into the capitol rotunda

Don Schain’s career began in Hollywood and moved to Utah in 1991 when he joined Leucadia Films. He is most noted for his role in producing, for the Disney Channel, the High School Musical series. He was the first president of the Motion Picture Association of Utah and is largely responsible for the creation of the Motion Picture Incentive Program. “Don Schain was passionate about the Utah film industry. He was inside it, he knew everyone. His contributions to film in Utah are a legacy that would be hard to repeat. He produced over 40 films here, was instrumental in creating our film incentive program and most importantly, he fostered hundreds of people in their film careers. His dedication will be missed.” —Virginia Pearce “It is because of Don Schain that there is a film industry in Utah and we will be forever grateful.” —Jeff Miller “I can’t start talking about Don without mentioning his five food groups— cigarettes, iced mochas, Johnny Walker Black, chocolate and meat loaf. As Don’s Consigliere, I would love to say to Don, ‘Don, you are the Don of all Dons and I will miss you terribly.’” —Mike Keily “Don’s legacy is his loyalty. Loyalty to the crew, loyalty to the talent, loyalty to his friends and loyalty to Utah. I believe he was most proud of the service he gave to the Motion Picture Association of Utah and the many independent films he produced. When we were working on a film, Don was a force of nature and he was firm and exacting. When we were at the Capitol in front of the Legislature, he commanded the attention the of whole room with his eloquence. When we were between films, Don loved to casually sit on his patio sipping mochas and tell stories of his days in L.A. Don memorized every favor that you or anyone did for him and he would be sure to repay that favor even if it wasn’t until the next

“The universe of Don Schain—This wonderful world where you could build a whole new world inside of a warehouse, where the impossible was just a bump in the road and miracles were par for the course. A place where the word egregious was an exhalation. I never heard him use the term egregious about anything that was really egregious. It was an expression of passion, it was an expression of joy and it was an expression of how happy we all should have been to be in Don Schain’s world.” — Ken Diamond “Don Schain was the consummate gentleman and the very definition of old-school class, charm, and sophistication. He was a leader, mentor, patriarch and friend... full of fervor and love for our film community.” —K. Brooke Redmon

3 SIXTY SCENERY

Denton Mackenzie P 801.708.7900 2550 South West Temple SLC, Utah 84115 dentonm@3sixtyscenery.com 3sixtyscenery.com

3 Sixty Scenery is a full-service scenery design and fabrication company that was created to give our clients and us more control of the final product, more creative flexibility, and the exceptional results clients expect. No two projects are the same, and we build each with exacting standards that allow for proper and seamless installation. We always work within budget parameters, while exceeding the expectations that come with any dollar figure. We create and build everything from stages to permanent installations, special effects and movie location sets. We believe that if it can be envisioned, we can build it. (Recently we even built a “town square” waiting room for a Drs. Office.) And nobody is better to direct this company than Denton Mackenzie and his 20 years of experience. Some of our combined clients include doTERRA, DOMO, LDS Church, San Diego Mormon Battalion, HireVue, Instructure, Google, Chevron and LifeVantage.
