IT IS TRUE

JESUS LOVES YOU

Believe That God Is Your Rewarder

TRY HIM TODAY

HEBREWS 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

ost people quote only the first part of Hebrews 11:6—“without faith it is impossible to please Him”. Yet, it goes on to say, “for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him”. In other words, the faith that pleases God is the kind of faith that believes that God exists and that He is a rewarder.

M

The Bible also says that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”. (Hebrews 11:1) So even in times of difficulty, when we don’t see good things happening in our circumstances, we are to believe that God will turn things around and reward us. God turned things around for Ruth, the Moabite widow, when she believed the Lord and made Him her God. (Ruth 1:16) The Bible tells us that she was given a “full reward” by the Lord when she came under His wings for refuge. (Ruth 2:12) Not only did He give her protection, He also gave her abundant provision, exceeding favor and a glorious redemption. (Ruth 2:9–17, 3:11, 4:10–13) 4

w w w. a d o n a i m a g . t v

When Rahab, the harlot of Jericho, heard reports of how the Lord had opened up the Red Sea for the children of Israel, she believed that “He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath”. (Joshua 2:9–11) Though Rahab had not personally witnessed the miracles, she believed God and hid the Jewish spies from their pursuers. (Joshua 2:4–6) Because of her faith, she not only did not perish with those who did not believe (Joshua 6:25, Hebrews 11:31), but she was also given a place in the “hall of faith” in Hebrews 11. God was so pleased with the faith of these two Gentile women that He not only blessed them in their lifetimes, but He also put them into the genealogy of His Son Jesus Christ, the great Redeemer and rewarder. Beloved, when you come to the Lord with your needs, believe that He is God, and that He is a rewarder. God has pleasure in this kind of faith. He wants to be the rewarder of your faith in Him!

Be on Your Guard visit www.adonaimag.tv for more articles

herefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. 2 Peter 3:17, NIV

T

Who of us doesn’t remember a film, television show, book or play with some swordsman in chainmail declaring, “On guard!” before engaging in a duel with someone else? In that type of adversarial situation, the warning is said to alert the other party that “I’m armed, so prepare to defend yourself.” And in light of the current belief battles going on today within evangelical Christianity, that meaning has been front and center in my head and heart—especially after reading through today’s verse in 2 Peter. I did a little further study and found what I read in the New Testament portion of The Bible Knowledge Commentary to be quite helpful in understanding this passage: If [Peter’s] readers were not careful, they could be carried away by the error of lawless men … The verb “carried away” emphasizes a group or corporate movement. False teachers are not satisfied with ambushing one or two, now and then, here and there; they want to sweep large groups of people away from the correct doctrine of Christ. Those who keep company with such people are in danger of being led astray.

But Truth is supposedly relative in the world where we now live, isn’t it? What’s true for you may not be true for me and so forth. Right? So how do we arm ourselves and follow Peter’s instruction to “be on your guard” as believers? But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). First, there’s grace. Unmerited favor from God. How do we grow in that? By reminding ourselves continually of what God did for each and every one of us. If we don’t understand grace, then we will never know who God is, what he stands for and what a right relationship with him looks like. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). When we get that, in turn, our lives will be lived from a place of humility and in testimony of what God has done through us. And then there’s knowledge. We will only grow spiritually and know God as much as we can in this life if we know the Word. And that doesn’t begin and end only with what someone says the Bible says (which isn’t bad in and of itself). But it means reading the Bible for yourself on a continuing basis, so that it will take root in your heart and inform your thinking and your actions. There is no better way to mature in the Lord and know Truth (and be corrected in your thinking, if it’s “stinking”) than to spend time getting to know God through the Word.

I don’t need or want to name prominent names or cite recent book titles or the like within the Christian bubble, as I’m sure that one or many have already come to your mind by this point in this editorial. Sadly, false teaching is everywhere these days and only seems to be gaining momentum as we head further into the twenty-first century.

No one else can have your spiritual relationship for you. And anyone who leads you away from Truth is leading you away from a secure position. So be on your guard. And get in there, dig deep and know His unchanging truth.

It’s alarming, for sure, to hear those who are in pastoral, shepherding or leadership positions mishandle God’s Word or imply that there is suddenly a new “change” in the meaning of scriptural doctrines that trained theologians and Bible scholars have agreed upon for centuries prior.

By Laura MacCorkle Are you ready to confront false teaching and see through the devil’s schemes to trick and deceive—even in Christian circles? Always consider the source and always measure what you hear or read against God’s Word. by Laura MacCorkle

Authority Turned Upside Down visit www.adonaimag.tv for more articles

ndustrial nations fear it. Emerging nations hate it, and few understand it. The very word “authority” conjures up images of oppression and abuse. There are many benefits and opportunities connected to authority that most people have never dreamed of. I am therefore coming to believe that the greatest problem in our world today is a basic disrespect for authority with an accompanying disregard and dismissal of it.

I

The fundamental reason for this problem is that most people harbor basic, false ideas of the nature of au-

thority. I have discovered over the years that there is a great amount of confusion and understanding concerning authority. Confusion comes first—people don’t understand what it is—and misunderstanding is its result: they aren’t aware of its personal benefits or its value to their social institutions and nations as a whole. Because we misunderstand what authority really is—and because this misunderstanding leads to abuse of authority and its consequences—we are always somewhat suspicious of it. We may have a passing (superficial) knowledge of authority, but we have totally missed the richness of its true nature. Consequently, we deal with it as a nec8

essary evil. Entire cultures have developed that are suspicious of authority. The Western world keeps authority at arm’s length and even fears it because the Western world highly values the concept of freedom, which has become synonymous with individualism. In the minds of many people of the Third World, with its history of colonization and slavery, authority has come to represent not just restriction or control but outright domination. Yet, even though most of us want to exist without authority being exercised over us, I believe we suffer from an inner contradiction, because somewhere deep within us, we recognize that we need authority in our lives. We don’t want authority to control us, but we want our lives to be stable, orderly, and productive, which comes from authority. It is important that the beauty of true authority be unveiled and be restored to its place of dignity in our nations and cultures. Authority needs to be reintroduced to both the individual and to society at large as a true friend—no longer the object of a transitory, arm’s-length relationship, or a deadly enemy. Authority has been turned upside down so that it has come to represent the opposite of what true authority is intended to be. Instead of control, authority allows true liberty to become a reality and opens the door to possibilities. Instead of domination and death, authority ignites the personal potential within each individual, while bringing protection and life. It is impossible for us to maximize our lives apart from a clear understanding of the character of genuine authority.

od’s grace is amazing! We’re saved by grace—God’s undeserved favor—and we live by grace, which is also God’s power in our lives to do what we could never do in our own strength. And it’s all because God is love, and He loves us unconditionally, constantly and completely.

G

But even though God loves us, we still have a problem: sin. It’s important for us to learn how to confront sin and overcome it, because while God loves sinners, He hates sin. And He hates it because of what it does to us and how it keeps us from the abundant life Jesus died to give us. (See John 10:10.) So many people live in an endless cycle of sinning, feeling guilty and condemned, suffering under guilt and condemnation for awhile, and then eventually believing God will forgive them or they’ve paid for it enough to be forgiven. I know how miserable it can be to live this way because I’ve been there myself. And it isn’t God’s plan for our lives. Jesus paid a tremendous price for us so we could have abundant life. He willingly took all of our sin on Himself and gave His life on the cross so we could be forgiven and have new life in Him. One of the greatest things about life in Christ is it makes us dead to sin. Romans 6:11 (AMP) says, “Consider yourselves also dead to sin and your relation to it broken, but alive to God [living in unbroken fellowship with Him] in Christ Jesus.”

We Have the Power to Overcome

You may be thinking, “Joyce, if I’m dead to sin, then why am I still sinning?” The Bible says we are dead to sin, but sin is not dead. We consider ourselves dead to sin because when we’re born again through 14

w w w. a d o n a i m a g . t v

Christ, our spirit is alive in Him and wants nothing to do with sin; that’s why it bothers you when you do something wrong. However, our soul—mind, will and emotions—is not immediately mature in the things of God. We all go through a lifelong process of learning how to renew our minds with God’s Word, submit our will to Him, and be led by the Holy Spirit rather than our emotions. The exciting truth is that in Christ, we have God’s grace to overcome sin, but we have to choose to cooperate with the Holy Spirit to walk it out. As a new creation in Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:17), the Holy Spirit lives in your spirit, and you have His power to do God’s will. This means we don’t have to live with anger, unforgiveness, bitterness, depression, addictions, self-pity, selfishness or anything else that isn’t Christlike. Philippians 4:13 (AMP) says we have strength for all things in Christ, we’re ready for anything, and we are self-sufficient in His sufficiency. In other words, we can do whatever we need to do, according to God’s will, by the strength and ability we have in Christ!

It’s All About Your “Want To”

We clearly see in God’s Word that anything He tells us to do, He will give us the ability to do it. But do we really believe it? Do we want to believe it? It’s easier to come up with excuses for why we can’t do things that are hard or that we really don’t want to do. “I just can’t help it…it’s too hard…I’m addicted…it’s the way I was raised…” Do you know that an excuse is a reason stuffed with a lie? And God is not a liar. So when you’re tempted to make an excuse (and we’re all tempted somecontd. on page 21

times), think about this: Why would God tell us to do something without giving us the ability to do it by His grace? Why would He say we should be kind, patient, merciful, and live a life of helping others and then not help us do it? The best thing we can do is stop making excuses and decide that if God said it, it’s true. He will give us the ability to do what He’s asking us to do by His grace. It really just comes down to whether we want to believe Him and make the effort to do, by faith, what He wants us to do. I know this is a challenging message, but I’m sharing it with you because God loves you so much, and He wants you to have a good life. His plans for you are better than you could ever imagine for yourself, and He wants you to be hopeful about your future. In Christ, we don’t ever have to settle for a mediocre life filled with compromise. We can have God’s best, because we are dead to sin and alive in Him!

3 Food Mistakes That Can Get in the Way of Healthy Eating e all want to eat a healthy diet that helps us feel good and helps prevent chronic diseases. Yet many of us are making food mistakes that can keep us from getting the biggest nutritional bang from our food buck.

W

Here are some common diet mistakes that even food-savvy consumers make:

1: Buying Fresh Produce for the Entire Week Once fruits and vegetables are harvested, they start losing some of their vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. So keeping them in the crisper all week long can mean robbing yourself of nutrition. Instead, buy fresh produce every few days and supplement it with frozen fruits and vegetables. Frozen produce is harvested at its peak and flash-frozen immediately, which protects the nutrients from breaking down for up to a year in the freezer. Look for frozen produce with no sauces or syrups added.

2: Buying Too Much Processed Food Processed foods tend to have more sodium and saturated fat, and less fiber and nutrients. Instead, start with fresh, whole foods as much as possible. When you do choose convenience products, look for those that contain whole grains (like whole-wheat bread and hot dog buns, whole-grain tortillas, and wholegrain blend pasta), have no trans fat, and are low in saturated fat (like bottled marinara made with olive oil, light salad dressing made with canola or olive oil, and some broth- or tomato-based soups.)

3: Eating Out or Ordering Takeout More Often Than Not

"According to our research, the average American 22

w w w. a d o n a i m a g . t v

adult purchases a meal or snack from a restaurant 5.8 times per week," says Annika Stensson, director of media relations for the National Restaurant Association. Indeed, 46.4% of the American food dollar is spent within the restaurant industry. And much of that goes for takeout: Roughly 58% of restaurant traffic in 2001 was specifically for takeout and delivery, according to National Restaurant Association statistics. One reason to eat more meals is to help prevent obesity. In a recent Agricultural Research Service study of men and women ages 31-50, those who got more of their total calories from conventional fastfood restaurants were likely to have a higher body mass index (BMI). Of course, cooking at home more often isn't always easy. Here are several strategies that can help keep you from frequenting the drive-through: Start with a well-stocked pantry and refrigerator. Some of my favorite ingredients to have handy for whipping up quick dinners are whole-grain pasta, bottled marinara and pesto sauces, whole-grain tortillas, shredded reduced-fat cheese, and canned refried beans. Get that slow cooker out of hiding and start collecting some slow cooker recipes you want to try. Invest a few minutes in the morning to assemble the ingredients, set the slow cooker on LOW, and leave for work. When you arrive home that evening, dinner is ready to be served. Try some fun and easy dinner options like soup and sandwich night, breakfast for dinner night, pasta night, salad night, baked potato bar night, or homemade pizza night (using whole wheat Boboli crust, whole wheat bagels, or tortillas for the crust).

Men, Women, and S-E-X” ere’s a statistic to catch your attention: 80 percent of men are more sexually oriented than their wives. This means they crave sex more often and desire more variety in their sex lives. Men are visually stimulated.

H

On the other hand, women are more likely to crave nonsexual affection. They want to cuddle and talk, but often have less desire for the act of sex than their husbands. When it comes to sexual appetite, men and women are out of sync. Not only are they not on the same page, they’re not even reading from the same book! Guys want their wives to be more sexual. Wives wonder how

Sex is a gift God has entrusted to women, and gifts are not something you put on the shelf to admire

they ended up with a husband obsessed with sex. As you might expect, this causes plenty of friction within marriages, especially among young married couples. When studies indicate that men reach their sexual peak at age 20, and women reach theirs at age 40, it’s no wonder intimacy causes so many conflicts! This is why a servant spirit is so critical to marital success, especially related to sex. Paul addressed this topic in his first letter to the Corinthians: “But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.” (1 Cor. 7:2–3) 24

w w w. a d o n a i m a g . t v

Paul understood that unmet needs within a marriage are a profoundly dangerous thing. It can lead to powerful temptations. Men have a deep physical and emotional need for sex. When women choose to withhold sex from their husbands, it creates a breeding ground for sexual sin. Men need sex to feel fully whole and complete as marriage partners. This is what it means to become “one flesh,” as described in Genesis 2:24. In marriage, we commit to granting our partners full and complete access to everything we have, including our bodies. It is the ultimate act of service and humility. But what about married women who don’t feel “sexual” toward their husbands? It’s not as if they can just flip a switch and become more interested in sex, right? The advice I give women in this scenario is for them to—for lack of a better phrase—“fake it till you make it.” In other words, start acting more sexually interested than you are. Learn what turns your husband on, then do those things. Sex is a gift God has entrusted to women, and gifts are not something you put on the shelf to admire. You have to use them! Your husband needs you to learn how to become more sexual than you feel. Here’s the truth: Women who heed this advice almost always end up discovering find tremendous joy and pleasure in sexual intimacy—far more than they ever expected. A servant spirit means putting your own needs aside and focusing instead on your partner’s needs. It means giving, even when you don’t receive in return. A woman who discovers this truth will forever be the wife of a happy man. Blessings,

Running from God visit www.adonaimag.tv for more articles

PSALM 51:1 “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions” dam and Eve owned up to their sin, and they regretted the break in their relationship with God. This was not true for their son, Cain. The story of how Cain murdered his brother, Abel, is familiar to us, as is the defiant question Cain asked God: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Genesis 4:9).

A

Cain’s anger led to the murder. He was angry that God accepted Abel’s offering while rejecting his own. Cain brought an offering to the Lord from his harvest. Abel also brought an offering, the firstborn from his flock. The brothers’ offerings were consistent with their occupations: Cain tilled the ground and Abel raised sheep. Outwardly, both brothers seemed to be performing a righteous act. But Cain waited to approach God on his own terms. The Bible doesn’t specify how either brother knew whether God accepted or rejected his offering, but it is clear that they understood the outcome: “The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast” (Genesis 4:4-5). God issued a stern warning, telling Cain that sin 26

w w w. a d o n a i m a g . t v

was lying in wait for him. But God also offered mercy, making it clear that if Cain did what was right, he would be accepted. Cain refused to heed God’s warning. Instead, he enticed his younger brother into a field where he beat him to death. Cain denied his sin. When God confronted him, Cain said he knew nothing about his brother’s murder. As punishment, Cain had to leave the land of Eden and became “a restless wanderer on the earth” (Genesis 4:12). Like Cain, many people today are running from God, but running from God will never alleviate the guilt of sin. Only one remedy exists, and that is found in facing up to our shortcomings. The way to deal with sin and guilt is through confession and repentance Prayer: Lord, there have been times when I have run from You. I have hidden from You because of my sin and guilt. I am tired of living apart from Your love and protection. Today I choose to receive Your grace and live in Your love. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
