As we head in the 2016 wedding season we also are heading in the 3rd year of Adore. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this little dream of mine. Yolanda and Lee met in 2007 while working at the same construction site for weeks. Lots of smiles and flirty glances finally led to sharing lunch one day. While chatting they realized that they both frequented the same country bar but on different nights. Yolanda invited Lee to join her and some friends that Saturday night. Playing pool, appies and ice caps by the lake lasted to 1:00 am and they have been inseparable ever since! After countless hours on Pinterest, the vision for their wedding was a combination of outdoor, vintage, boho, romantic, beachy, pastel with vivid flowers, Grecian, rustic, casual and so on. Thank goodness for decorator, Vintage Oragami who managed to rein them in and help them come up with a Organic Grecian theme. The Organic theme was enhanced with collected driftwood, custom made birch wedding arch and beautiful hand painted calligraphy signs on slabs of wood. There were plenty of eucalyptus, succulents and fresh florals to help keep the color palette soft and natural. Yolanda and Lee actually "tied the knot" at their ceremony in the middle of an apple orchard, had photos at Kaloya Regional Park and then moved to the vine covered Bowery for their reception. A photo booth and props were set up in Lee's vintage pickup (Drivein dates are their favorite!) and they had a flash tattoo station for our guests enjoyment. Yolanda and Lee danced the night away under strings of lights to a live reggae band and warmed up by the fire pit while enjoying wood fire pizza.

Ice cream is a treat for any age, right from cradle to rocking chair. From early memories of racing to finish a cone before it melts on a hot summer day, to finishing off a whole tub after your first breakup, to sharing a bowl with your own children and grandchildren; from the best to the worst moments, ice cream is there. You might not think there’s anything more comforting or delicious than a pint of Cherry Garcia, but Alex Sielmann begs to differ. With his Penticton-based business Georgeous Georgia’s Homemade Ice Cream, he is incorporating fresh, often organic Okanagan ingredients into decadent desserts for the whole family.

So why ice cream? “I think everyone has pretty fond memories of ice cream,” he says. When he was growing up, his family had a cottage on Prince Edward Island, a short bike ride away from a corner store. “The only thing I ever got from there was rainbow sherbet,” he recalls. “I remember sitting on the step of the corner store in the sunshine, eating my ice cream cone, and it was the best thing ever.” In a vacation destination like Penticton, moments like that are ripe for the picking, just like a fresh strawberry. For Alex, the challenge is to take that ripe strawberry and combine it with other simple ingredients, sustainably and responsibly grown and farmed, to create an experience that people get really excited about. “In the Okanagan, there are so many orchards and so many passionate people producing delicious fruit and herbs and honey,” he explains. “In Canada, that’s special – an environment with hot enough weather to produce all this stuff – cherries and huge ripe peaches and pears and plums and apricots. “I like to take advantage of that, and showcase it.” With a host of fresh, delicious ingredients available right in his backyard, Alex has the opportunity to customize taste experiences for his customers. His products and unique delivery method – a retro combination tricycle and freezer unit named Pashley – are a treat for all the senses at outdoor Okanagan wedding ceremonies and receptions. Alex can do customizable ice cream in cups or cones, ice cream sandwiches (either premade or make-it-yourself, with a selection of cookie and ice cream flavours) and popsicles. Wedding cakes are also available, although they’re not made of ice cream, so they won’t melt into a pool on your plate. Like his ice cream, the cakes play homage to the Okanagan with the flavours of fresh fruit and proper buttercream, decorated with fresh organic flowers. “It’s more about the flavour than fondant or sugary garnishes,” he says. “When I make something I want it to taste really delicious – that’s my number one priority. “I do my best to make it beautiful,” he laughs, “but there’s beauty in simplicity too. Good ingredients will speak for themselves.”

We first met in high school and we were both happy to have a guy/girlfriend that was actually just a friend. Little did we know that was set to change after high school! We both went our separate ways entering University, but ended up reconnecting again on a group house boating trip one summer. We were officially out of the "friend zone.” Over the next five years we shared many life events such as graduating university, beginning our careers and working on our relationship. Steve proposed to me in November 2014 at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and we didn’t waste any time, getting married the following summer! Now we are expecting our first baby in Spring 2016! We wanted our wedding vision to demonstrate both simplicity and elegance. Although simplicity was a key element, we also didn’t want a cookie cutter wedding and wanted the décor to represent who we are. We chose the Okanagan because it was our perfect balance of a local and a destination wedding. We also thought that the scenery would truly complement the theme of our wedding. We wanted something close to water, with warm weather and a gorgeous backdrop. Planning the wedding from Calgary had its challenges, but with the help of our amazing wedding planner, Sara from Top Knot Events, we were able to make our vision reality. Most of our décor was inspired by Steve's Japanese heritage, and included Cherry Blossoms and origami paper cranes as the focal points. With help from our families, we wanted to embrace the tradition of making 1001 origami paper cranes, which we used in a variety of areas such as the chandelier above the dance floor. The Painted Rock Winery venue already came very well decorated, so we were very lucky that limited additional decor was needed. Our guests graciously traveled to our wedding from various locations, everywhere from Calgary to Arizona to even Germany! We were beyond grateful for the support. We wanted our wedding day to be a day we shared our love and commitment to one another, in front of our close family and friends. That meant the most to us. We started our day with our first look photo session at a beautiful park in Penticton, followed by our wedding party pictures, and then came our ceremony at Painted Rock. From that point on we didn’t want to leave our guests again and enjoyed the rest of our reception which included enjoying amazing food, laughing, crying tears of happiness and dancing the night away.

The price tag for matrimony can be a sobering reality for most. As a wedding planner, coaxing sticker shocked couples off the “Vegas elopement” ledge is just part of the job description. And while we have nothing against Vegas (or elopements) moms tend not to be the biggest fans. In our experience, money saving magic begins the moment you start thinking outside the box and our first rule of wedding planning is… there are no rules. Gone are the days of nonsensical etiquette and doily wrapped fruitcake (unless you truly enjoy dried currants in your desserts). We are both from the small town of Oliver, BC. We went to different elementary schools, so we didn't know each other until high school started. I would always see her in the halls at school, but didn't really know who she was. I did some investigative work (and without a cell phone or social media! Haha) and slowly figured out her story. Over the next couple years we got to know each other better and the rest is history.

Travis and I grew up in the same small town of Oliver, B.C, but somehow never met until high school. One summer, at about 16 years old, a guy who was surrounded by a group of friends and wearing a Rolling Stones t-shirt caught my eye. I knew of him: A class clown who still somehow got better grades than me, a hockey player, the guy with spiked hair… But I didn’t really know him. That summer we started to hang out; I think our mutual love for good ol’ rock and roll is part of what brought us together. For how different our personalities and interests appeared on the surface, we just seemed to get each other, and our friendship soon became young love. Who would’ve known that he’d get more serious about his education, get into medical school, and somewhat tame that perma-spiked hair? It feels like another lifetime when I reflect on meeting 10 years ago, during a time when we were still figuring out who we were as individuals. We’ve definitely changed and grown together over the years, and even though I’m more comfortable around him than with anyone else, I often still get that fluttery giddy feeling in his presence.

Our first kiss took place at one of our houses. I think at my parents’ place. We were still in high school at this point. I’m 100% positive that it was magical. And even though it was a long time ago, I do remember I was taken by surprise, as Marisa was the one to initiate this. Needless to say, I enjoyed every second of it.

We were watching a movie (again) and were at his parents’ house because, again, we were both still young (I know I know, classic high school sweetheart “first kiss” setting). We were talking more than actually watching the movie, and looking into his blue eyes and that soft smile – I couldn’t help it! Sparks flew! We have other memorable kisses too of course, but there are more good stories from our years together than there are pages of this magazine!

FIR ST I LOV E YO U

This took place as I was walking Marisa back to her house one night. I had been wanting to, I guess you could say, PROFESS my love for her for quite some time, but never seemed to have the courage to do it. Finally, this particular night seemed to be the perfect time and setting. We were standing at the wooden gate behind her house and the words just rolled off of my tongue. I couldn't believe that I had managed to do it. Seeing the look on her face was worth it!

Travis was walking me home one night. Hand in hand, we reached the gate to my old backyard, in between a long row of cedar trees where we used to talk for hours. Under the light of the moon, Travis looked me in the eye and in the most sincere voice simply said, “You know, I love you.� My heart nearly burst! And I already knew that I loved him, so I told him right then and there. SPRING-SUMMER 2016

T H E ONE

I have known for a long time that Marisa was ‘the one.’ I guess the attributes associated with any person are what make us attracted to them, and she has many attributes that have drawn me in. Marisa is the most kind and selfless person that I have ever had the pleasure of crossing paths with, let alone spending my life with! She is unique. She brings out the best in me and that is what I adore about her. She demonstrates how most of us should conduct ourselves throughout the day, both at work as a nurse and everywhere else, teaching me what love is and how to love. I have tried to imagine what my life without Marisa would be like, and the most encouraging thing about this [nightmare!] is that I have a hard time imagining it at all. I think it’s because even though we are strong as individuals, we are even stronger together. I can’t think of myself without thinking of her. We make a fine team.

Sometimes words just aren’t enough to express how I know that Travis is “The One” – I just know. He is my one. First, there are the little things: He makes me laugh. A lot. For a decade he has actively listened to my chatter, understanding that there is a time for long conversation and a time for comfortable silence. He encourages me in aspects of work, hobbies, and life, believing in me and celebrating my efforts. He treats his parents well, and he has always been incredibly respectful and loving toward my family. These are just some of the little things that make it very easy to love and cherish him. Then there are the big things: Travis has been my rock, supporting me through big family losses. He has always made me feel safe and loved. He is hardworking, committed, brave, and takes the time to do things for others. I have learned a lot from him, and I don’t think either of us would be same without the other.

T HE PROP OSA L

The proposal was a couple months of planning. First came the ring selection. This was not too hard because I had gotten to know her taste quite well by then. Even though it’s one of the two most important pieces of jewelry, and she has to love it, I just had a good feeling about the one I chose. Well, that and the fact that she told me one time that she liked solitaire diamond rings. Then came the cake. I decided to get a cake done by Kaleena from Kaleena Cakes. She did an awesome job creating a really cool ring-in-box cake. Last was to select the setting. I chose Spirit Ridge in Osoyoos BC. Earlier that day I made lasagna then took the cake and lasagna to the room and set up a bouquet of roses. I told her that we were going to visit some family there and stay the night. When we got there she was confused as to where everyone was. I then informed her that they weren't there yet and they told us to just go ahead and eat without them. This raised a few red flags for her, but she went with it. I then had her come sit on the couch with me and got right to the proposal. Her face was priceless. She said YES! And now I can’t wait to marry her!

DIY with ADORE

STEPS

Paint ceramic planters white. You may need two coats. Let dry. Once dry start mixing fabric dye according to the directions on the packaging. The one we used required boiling water to be mixed with dye.

We started with using more water to dye ratio so that we could build up the layers of color as we went along. The first layer covered most of the pot. Hold in the desired place for 10-15 minutes. Pull out and let dry.

Before you start the second layer, decrease the size of the container that is holding the dye and the amount of water and dye you'll be using. This is where we added more dye to darken up the color.

Hold in the desired place for 1015 minutes. Pull out and let dry. For the third layer, remove more water and add in more dye. Repeat step 5. Once you have achieved all the layers of colour, let the pots fully dry so that the dye will set. Plant succulents.
