SPECIAL THANKS Kristen Wagner, Carly Barnett, Kari Owen, Shawna Gray, Jessica Zais Photography, Janice Robillard, White Linen Photography, Sanctuary Gardens, Yuriko Larson,
It was a hot summer in the Okanagan! That didn't stop our talented wedding vendors from showcasing beautiful brides and amazing venues. Even though summer is coming to an end the wedding season is still full on here in the Okanagan. I needed some serious time management this summer as we had a new addition to our family.....Quinn Rachel was born June 19. Knowing that, I was ahead of the game when planning our stylized shoot for the fall issue. With the snow still on the ground in March my amazing team of vendors braved the chilly air and tromped through the mud to bring the shoot "Natural Beauty" to life. In this issue the focus is on table settings and food. We have tips to help inspire settings for your wedding tables and Joy Road Catering talks about the local food choices available for your wedding day. Our DIY shows how to make some fun guest favors...bottle cap magnets! We will be giving away a set of these magnets with every order placed for

TRENDS we ADORE
Wedding styling and display tables are very on trend for the 2014 /2015 wedding season and calligraphy makes the best stand out. The art of calligraphy has been around for thousands of years. It is making a huge splash as an emerging trend in the wedding industry. Today's couples are using calligraphy in everything from wedding invitations to the signs, backdrops and blackboards on display for their special day. A SOPHISTICATED PAIRING Timeless elegance- silver metallics with naturals is a direction that can be very glamorous without being overdone. Clean flatwear on mirrors, silver mercury vases, candle and tealight holders will look stunning on your wedding tables. White chiavari chairs will add elegance to this wedding look that will leave your guests in awe.

OLD WORLD CHARM Set a romantically rustic scene with a color palette of mint, cream, sage and olive. Cream flowers with lavender and sage foliage play up this organic color palette throughout the center of the table and around the birch wrapped candle holders. Farm style tables are a perfect contrast to the mint napkins. The gold rimmed flatware adds a touch of old world elegance and charm. Your guests will feel at home and comfortable with this tablescape.

MAKE IT POP We LOVE gold at weddings! Gold is timeless, elegant and goes with many other color parings. It is also one of the easiest ways to add a little "luxe" to your wedding. Gold-rimmed stem ware, gold-plated flatware and golden "LOVE" letters will definitely make a statement on your wedding tables. Mix in some bright blooms of fresh flowers and let them pop against the metallic table runner and elegant menu cards. Adding a seasonal piece of beautiful fruit, makes an organic souvenir that adds a sweet touch and tastes as good as it looks!

J
ess grew up in Kelowna so it was
natural for her and Braden to want to get married there. They chose her parents heritage home, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the city. Jess's mom is a passionate gardener so she had the grounds in stunning perfection. The quaint landscaping and history of the house lent itself perfectly to Vintage Origamis elegant decor. Jess summarized the wedding vibe as "chandeliers and wild flower, antique dressers and live jazz, Asian fusion and macaroons". It was an eclectic mix of their favorite things. With only immediate family and dearest friends in a attendance a lovely intimate feel permeated the event. Seasonal and local ingredients highlighted the cocktail hour and delicious vegetarian buffet. All was enjoyed against the back drop of the backyard pool and gardens. When speeches were done the guests danced the night away under the twinkle lights and stars.

TIPS TO HELP YOU ENJOY YOUR WEDDING DAY. WRITTEN BY KARA BOLEN Hours of planning, countless DIY projects and thousands of dollars go into pulling off your dream wedding. The last few weeks are just flying by and after all of the waiting, the final countdown for your big day has finally arrived. So how do you make sure that it really is the day you’ve always imagined? Well, if you asked my bridesmaids (the ladies who know me best), if they thought I would be calm and collected on my wedding day, not one of them would have said yes. Not only am I a perfectionist, I’m not always the best at handling stressful situations. It’s not easy to transform yourself from an obsessive party planner, fixating on every small detail, to a chill, keep-your-cool bride, but it's definitely something that needs to be done. Here are my five steps to help you relax and make the most of one of the biggest days of your life:

THE MONTH BEFORE
Think Happy Thoughts Surround yourself with positive people. You don’t need to deal with your critical aunt making negative comments over your shoulder, or a miserable bridesmaid who can only think about herself. Separate yourself from people who have the ability to ruin your mood. Surround yourself with positive people and happy thoughts. This should be the happiest time of your life!

Don’t worry about the Little Things It is all about perspective. There may be a few small snags along the way, but don’t let it ruin your day. In the end it’s not about the details, it’s about marrying the man of your dreams, so that you can spend the rest of your lives together. If something goes wrong, chances are, no one will notice but you.

hen Dana Ewart first tasted an Okanagan peach straight from the tree, she knew she had found home. It had been a long journey for the chef and co-owner of Joy Road Catering. She had traveled from Ontario with her partner in work and life, Cam Smith, looking for a place where they could expand their experience of food and cooking in close proximity to their raw materials: fresh produce and world-class wines. With the taste of that fresh-picked peach still lingering in their mouths, Dana and Cam set to work finding the best local ingredients to work with. They quickly built a network of local food contacts through regular appearances at a Penticton farmers’ market, where they sold organic baking. It’s their mandate to use local sources for every possible ingredient, and that choice is what makes Joy Road unique: they create “cuisine de terroir,” or food with a strong sense of place.

With the ingredients laid out before them, Dana and Cam drew on their training as chefs and experience working at high-end restaurants in Toronto and Montreal. They began hosting al fresco vineyard dinners twice weekly during the summer months,

Some catered meals have a reputation
::
ADORE
The visual experience of food can be almost as important as the taste. As delicious as a dish may be, people won’t want to eat it if it looks stale, soggy or overcooked. Serving meals “family style” – where diners serve themselves from platters passed around the table – allows people to savour the look and smell of each dish as well as the taste. “People see beautiful green beans, cherry tomatoes, purple potatoes, and they say, ‘It looks so good! It smells so good!’” says Dana. “With family style we can say – ‘Help yourself!’ But with plated meals you choose months in advance, you might end up looking at your husband’s plate and saying, ‘I chose wrong.’” As chefs, Dana and Cam build menus around featured wines, or sometimes fruits and vegetables in season. As caterers, they must instead accommodate the preferences of their catering clients. Wedding clients may want to feature a favourite dish, but Dana and Cam still work to make it as unique and flavourful as possible. Fresh, quality ingredients make a difference to all aspects of a meal, and the appeal can make diners more eager to try new things. People may come to Joy Road’s table thinking they don’t like beets, but when the beet is harvested in the morning and on the table by dinner time, they might just change their mind. It’s a stark contrast to the taste of weeks-old beets at the grocery store. But a meal doesn’t stop at fruits and vegetables, and neither does Joy Road’s mandate for freshness. Dana and Cam raise their own chickens for eggs, bake their own organic artisan breads using an old French technique, and even make their own sausage and prosciutto. And if they can’t make an item themselves, they comb the country and the world finding the highest quality ingredients, responsibly produced. Local food is about more than just taste; it’s about health, economics and politics too. By sourcing locally, Joy Road is helping to ensure quality food is available to the local market. “It’s better to pay for quality, local products, rather than unhealthy products grown in Styrofoam under fluorescent light,” Dana explains. “Everybody eats, every day. If more people were aware of how our food gets to us, they would support more local growers and eat better.” Food is an essential part of the human experience, and it can be much more than sustenance. “Food is such a lovely thing that isn’t emphasized enough when people think about their health,” explains Dana. “Food is medicine. Food is joy.” And good food doesn’t have to mean fancy ingredients in a five star restaurant. Sometimes the best dishes are the simplest. “It just has to be flavourful and seasoned well, with fresh ingredients.” Whether fresh from the tree, or sliced and wrapped Italian-style in fresh prosciutto, an Okanagan peach is a taste of a place – and Joy Road ensures that unique flavour is at the forefront of every dish they serve.

KRISTIN & MITCHELL WHITE LINEN PHOTOGRAPHY Kristin and Mitchell wanted to have a fall themed wedding but without the typical fall palette of orange and reds. They decided to build the palette on natural elements such as burlap and wood and a base of off white. Muted tones of blush and turquoise with pops of mustard complemented beautifully. The venue was also an important component to the cozy, rustic yet elegant feel they were envisioning. Linden Gardens in Kaleden was the perfect choice for the ceremony. The outdoor gardens are stunning no matter the season but the mustard yellow leaves seemed to be made to fit their palette! The property is also home to the Frog Tree Cafe, an equally spectacular venue for the reception . Wicker chairs set at long tables under an amazing vaulted cedar beam ceiling fit perfectly with the communal feel the couple wanted. Stage Right came in and hit a home run with the decor. The final outcome was everything Kristin and Mitchell had envisioned and more.... warm, cozy, elegant and perfectly mismatched!

OUR FIRST KISS ISN’T THE BEST OF STORIES. IT HAPPENED THE SAME NIGHT WE MET. MEGAN LUNGED AT ME UNCONTROLLABLY FOR A KISS AND SHE GOT IT.
Technically we kissed the first night we met, but my "favorite first kiss" was when Tyler had taken me to his friends’ house. This was the second time we hung out for a bon fire. He had remembered me saying how I’d love to be kissed passionately in the rain. Well that night it started raining and out of nowhere Tyler grabbed me and planted the most amazing kiss on my lips in the rain. It was like fireworks going off!

I KNEW RIGHT WHEN I SAW MEGAN SHE WAS THE ONE. SHE MADE MY HEART SKIP A BEAT WITH HER BEAUTY AND GREAT PERSONALITY. WE HAVEN’T SPEND A DAY APART.
I pretty much knew within the first few months of dating that Tyler was the one. From the moment we met we just couldn't be apart. Every time I was with him or thought about him I got this crazy amazing feeling inside that I had never felt before and knew it meant something special. People thought we were crazy for moving so fast with our relationship but we couldn't help it. It was like a magnetic pull. Tyler is everything I could have ever imagined in a guy and I feel so blessed that I get to spend the rest of my life with him.

ON THE NIIGHT I COULDN’T WAIT ANY LONGER. I HAD THE RING AT HOME HIDDEN AWAY, AND IT WAS DRIVING ME CRAZY. IT WAS A SPUR OF THE MOMENT PLAN. I QUICKLY GOT THE RING AND RAN OUTSIDE TO PUT IT IN THE BBQ. I ASKED MEGAN IF WE COULD GET DINNER READY AND IF SHE COULD GO START THE BBQ. I FOLLOWED HER UP THE STAIRS AND OUTSIDE. AS SHE LIFTED THE LID I GOT ON ONE KNEE. SHE SAW THE RING AND TURNED AROUND AS I WAS KNEELING. THAT’S THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER HEARD MEGAN SPEECHLESS.
I was not expecting it at all. It was a Sunday evening and I had just gotten home from holidays so was busy unpacking and doing laundry. Tyler came in and started helping me fold laundry which should have been my first clue. He than asked me to start the BBQ for him and he'd be right out with dinner. I complained and said I was busy but he hounded me until I did it. When I went to open the lid to the BBQ there sat the most stunning sparkling ring I have even seen. I was in shock and turned to find Tyler down on one knee asking me to marry him. For the first time in my life I was speechless and instantly started hugging him and kissing him and whispered YES! It was the best moment of my life!
