IN ORDER TO CALL YOURSELF A CAKE DESIGNER, YOU MUST BE TWO THINGS: A BAKER – AND AN ARTIST.

SUMMER 2013

::

“My philosophy is that cakes can’t just look good – they need to taste good too,” says Anna Craig of Sweet On You Designer Cups and Cakes. “Usually for weddings, people are really focused on what the cake looks like, but I think the most important part is what it tastes like. No one’s going to care what it looks like if at the end of the day it tastes like cardboard.” A cake that tastes as good as it looks is the result of hours of work in the kitchen and at the drawing board. Sweet On You offers eight distinct cake flavours and more than twice that many icing flavours, and each recipe is the product of extensive

research, trial and error. Anna looks for recipes that are moist and hold up when decorated; she also strives to find recipes that bake well as both cakes and cupcakes. The science behind baking appeals to Anna’s technical and scientific way of thinking, but the design element is where she really gets to have fun. “I think that’s why cake decorating appealed to me. It was a good artistic release,” she says. “I’ve never done anything artistic in my life until I started baking cakes.” Anna’s passion for cakes dates back a few years to her daughter’s first birthday, an occasion that demands a celebratory cake. “My mom always baked cakes for me,” she says, “so I thought it would be special if I made a cake for [my daughter].” That creation proved that the only direction left to go was up. “It was the worst cake ever,” Anna laughs. But with a little outside training, this hidden talent quickly gained traction, and Anna began providing cakes for a variety of functions, including birthdays, showers, non-profit events and weddings—anywhere a dessert is required to be both stunning and delicious. 10

By Kristen Wagner Photos By Rebecca Siewert Melinda Murovec was a florist right from the beginning. She just didn’t know it. “When I was a kid I used to cut the cedar from my mom’s bush and make Christmas trees wreaths every year,” she recalls. “I used to climb trees and be outside as much as I could. I grew up around gardens.” But after those promising beginnings, it took Melinda years to fully embrace her passion for flowers as a profession. She began a career in business and raised a family, and it was only after her children were grown and she was preparing to return to full-time work that she looked to the world of floral design.

Melinda provides floral services for community events and fundraisers as well as personal orders, but weddings make up the bulk of her business, and they often demand the most preparation. The planning process begins months before the wedding takes place. At an initial meeting, Melinda works with the bride to determine what kind of floral design she’s looking for. Using items like pictures of venues or fabric samples, Melinda develops an idea of the look and feel of the wedding, and works out how flowers will best complement it. “I gather a lot of information from [the bride], do a lot of listening,” she says. “Then I describe my style, and try to relate my style to what they want in their wedding.” Hearkening back to her childhood in the gardens of her mother and grandmother, Melinda’s style draws a lot of inspiration from the natural landscape of the Okanagan. She grows some of her flowers and greens in her own garden, and creates her designs in a home studio looking out on it. The remaining flowers come “I’ve always loved to

“I like to keep things as close to nature as I can,”

she says. “I knew I did not want to be in an office setting. And I knew I needed to nurture something creative, so that’s why I went back to floral school—because it was something I did as a kid and I wanted to return to it.” In 2011, Melinda completed an intensive month-long course at Toronto’s Canadian Institute of Floral Design. The course covered everything from flower identification to composition and colour, but what Melinda loved most was the opportunity to indulge her creative side.

she says. “If I can source things within the Okanagan, I’d much rather do that. It’s a lot more natural to this area.”

Armed with the knowledge she needed, Melinda returned to her home in Kelowna and set up her business, A New Leaf Floral

flowers like roses and peonies, moss-covered branches, and a more asymmetrical design that doesn’t strive for perfection. Regardless of the trends or styles incorporated into flower design, Melinda believes that the role of flowers in a wedding is to highlight the bride, and not overwhelm her. She has filled orders running the gamut from elaborate to minimalist—one order even saw her taking flowers to the bride’s home the night before her wedding and helping the wedding party construct their own bouquets. But orders that start small often grow once the client sees the floral design. “Once people start wanting flowers, they keep going,” she says. “To see someone embrace the beauty of nature is the best part of being a florist.” Client reactions to her creations often surprise even the clients themselves; one bride said she was ordering flowers because her mother expected her to. But when she saw a mockup of her bouquet, “She just about started crying!” Melinda says. “These flowers mean a lot more than what [she] said before.” “They really have an impact.” www.anewleaffloral.ca www.facebook.com/A-New-Leaf-Floral-Design

Dustin and I met at the Hotel Eldorado during the summer of 2007 while working out on the beautiful lakeside boardwalk. Working alongside each other we got to know one another as friends first but I quickly realized as I was falling head over heels for Dusty!

Our first kiss just happened to be during a Halloween party. Dustin had a black beard drawn on his face to go along with his pirate costume and I just couldn’t resist! As soon as I got home later on that evening I discovered I had black face paint all over my face!

AFTER A WEEKEND VISIT WHEN SHE FIRST MET MY FAMILY IN ALBERTA.

I knew Dustin was “The One” after I experienced, first hand, his contagiously positive attitude and take on life. Dustin is an incredibly genuine, happy and upbeat person, someone you want to be with every moment of everyday. Dustin has taught me so many valuable life lessons and even taught me how to snowboard and scuba dive, a couple of things I never thought I would be successful at. A lot of Dustin’s best features are things I value a lot in a person, for example he is the type of person that is always turning a difficult situation into a great one, he is also an incredibly true and reliable friend and would literally do anything for those he loves and cherishes in his life. Dustin is an honorable, hard working, loving an sensitive guy and as soon as I realized those qualities (which didn’t take long at all) I knew he was the person I wanted to love and grow old with.

T HE PROP OSA L I WANTED TO INVOLVE HER WHOLE FAMILY AND JULY LONG WEEKEND WAS WHEN EVERYONE WOULD BE TOGETHER. WE SET OUT ON A HIKE WITH SUZAN’S MOM, DAD, BROTHER AND HER GRANDMA AND SISTER WHO WERE VISITING FROM OUT EAST. ALL HIKES INCLUDED LEO, THE FAMILY BLACK LAB WHO WOULD BE THE SECRET RING BEARER. AT THE RIGHT MOMENT I POINTED AT A BLACK POUCH TIED AROUND LEO’S COLLAR AND ASKED SUZAN WHAT IT WAS. SHE REALLY DIDN’T PAY MUCH ATTENTION AS KNELT DOWN AND PULLED OUT THE RING. ONCE SHE REALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING, I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE BEAUTIFUL TEARS AND SMILE THAT FOLLOWED. FAMILY IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BOTH OF US AND SEEING THE JOY ON EVERYONE’S FACE MADE THE DAY.

Oh the proposal. I sure didn’t see it coming, that’s for sure! Dustin and I were in Kelowna visiting for a few days over the July long weekend. My entire family, including my 88 year old grandmother from out East, were all there. One afternoon, Dustin got the entire family, including our family dog, together to go for a hike up in Crawford. While enjoying the breathtaking view of the lake and the valley Dustin went over to our family dog and said “What this hanging off of Leo’s collar?” He untied a small pouch, and knelt down on one knee right in front of me. Not until he dropped the beautiful ring into this hand did I realize what was going on! He told me that I am his best friend and that he would be the happiest man around if I would spend the rest of my life with him, as his wife. It was such an incredibly exciting and emotional time and that fact that he incorporated those closest to me in the proposal just shows what a thoughtful and sweet man I have in my life.
