NOTES FROM THE EDITOR... With each issue of ADRIANA Magazine comes a new message. For our Premiere Issue, we spoke of the Caribbean and our deep love and appreciation for this sweet place we call home. For Issue II, our attention shifted to those who are “wild at heart”, and what marriage and loves means to them. Then for Issue III, we hit jackpot when we discovered along our path that “passion meets love” at every stage of the process and our hearts were full. It’s been quite a journey.

HERRO STUDIO

This year started off so perfectly some would say. We were all so busy and caught up in the day to day of our lives, that we couldn’t even get an opportunity to stop and take in all of the beauty around us. We couldn’t truly appreciate our endless blessings. But then things changed, the pandemic hit and the focus became quite different.

Love our Cover Couple!

KRISTI & MATT

To say that this year was challenging would be an understatement. So many lost their lives, their loved ones, their jobs, their businesses, and so much more. We are all still battling with this pandemic, and are trying to come to terms with the incredible changes that have come our way. I know that so many beautiful brides-to-be and couples had to endure so much this year also, and for that I am truly sorry. There are simply no words to describe how testing this year would have been for those having to change their plans, postpone or even cancel their special day due to Covid-19. I read countless stories from couples, watched a million videos of them explaining their stress and anxiety throughout the process and even interviewed a few couples myself, who were kind enough to share their own experiences. The end result was a complete understanding of how much sadness they felt, yes, but also how hopeful they were that things would be better soon and how much stronger their relationship became because of this experience. How amazing is that? You are all so incredible, and I hope that you remember that as we move into the New Year with hope. Though you may not have had the wedding that you always envisioned, or decided to postpone until next year, you made the best choice for you, and that’s all that matters. Love never fails. Love is never cancelled. You will celebrate again… in the biggest way.

LINDSAY VANN PHOTOGRAPHY

So, as you get ready to read the pages of this new issue, I have one request. I pray that you turn each page with a smile on your face. I want you to see the pure joy of our couples and read their love stories, and feel only joy for what’s to come for you. As you navigate all of the big day decisions and hurdles that may come your way, always come back to your why. Why you said “yes!”, why you chose each other, and why this day means so much to both of you.

6

It may have been a difficult year for most, but that doesn’t mean that it will be this way forever. This too shall pass, and when it does, I promise to be there with the biggest glass of champagne in my hand toasting to your happiness my loves! Cheers to 2021. Cheers to A New Chapter.

THE BEAUTY BEHIND THE BRAND

REVEREND ROXANNE BIRCHFIELD MARRIED by REV ROXY

Creating a positive impact in the world, especially during an extremely turbulent time can certainly feel daunting, so when we heard about Rev. Roxy and her drive to share the love stories of her couples through her work, we were flooded with questions. She was so gracious and provided us with so much meaningful information that we were pretty certain that her viewpoint needed to be heard. She is such a powerhouse, filled with passion and love and you can just feel it in her every word. It is for this very reason, that we knew we had to share her story with our community, and inspire each and every one of you to have faith, be patient and always choose love, no matter the circumstance.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR AMAZING BUSINESS, MARRIED BY REV ROXY. WHEN DID YOU OFFICIALLLY LAUNCH? I officially launched my business in August of 2006. My first wedding was my sister’s wedding. WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU WANTED TO BECOME A WEDDING OFFICIANT? I only call myself “wedding officiant” so that others may understand one of the many things I can do. I am actually clergy and have been ordained by religious endorser. My ministry is focused on marriage but as clergy there are many responsibilities, marrying people is just a slice of a much bigger picture. My current ministry outside of marriage is Chaplaincy within the Armed Forces. DID YOUR CARIBBEAN HERITAGE INFLUENCE YOUR UNIQUE STYLE OF OFFICIATING? I think being Caribbean helps me to connect to a broad audience more so than influencing my style. I have done weddings in many places around the United States and the Caribbean and I hope to travel to even further doing my work.

HAVE YOU EVERY DONE A WEDDING IN THE CARIBBEAN? I have done weddings in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. It has seriously been some of my favorite weddings. I was born in Trinidad so being on either island brings some familiarity and, of course, there is always sea water nearby. There is something magical about all the Caribbean islands. HAVING OFFICIATED HUNDREDS OF WEDDINGS THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER THUS FAR, HOW DIFFERENT HAS IT BEEN DURING THE PANDEMIC?

20

ADRIANAWEDDINGS.COM

The major difference has been the WHERE. Many people are getting married at home and mostly outdoors. The guest count is significantly smaller. The pandemic has helped people focus on basics and be more creative than ever before. GIVEN THE CURRENT CLIMATE, DO YOU THINK THAT PREMARITAL COUNSELLING IS ESSENTIAL FOR COUPLES BEFORE THEY GET MARRIED? I have thought premarital counseling to be essential before the current climate. If there is one thing the pandemic has taught us is that tomorrow is not promised to us,

therefore we should really invest in the moment and make the most of our days here on this earth- to include getting to know the people who are most precious to us on the deepest level possible. Marriage is way more than physical attraction and pretty Instagram pictures and the counselling process is a place where couples get to discover more. WE ALL KNOW THE STRUGGLES THAT MANY WOMEN FACE IN VARIOUS INDUSTRIES. SO HOW HAS IT BEEN BEING A BLACK WOMAN WORKING IN THIS PARTICULAR SECTION OF THE WEDDING INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES? I still have people coming up to me in 2020 at weddings saying, “I’ve never seen a woman officiate a wedding before!” But I am actually use to that since I’ve been a Chaplain in hospitals and the military. I’m usually a minority when it comes to race and gender. It’s the life I’ve lived for almost a decade in ministry and it only calls me to a high level of excellence.

DR. KERRY ANNE PERKINS AND MICHAEL GORDON’S WEDDING WAS SO POWERFUL. WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU SAW THEM GOING INTO THE PROTEST? They were the “rainbow” everyone needed. Our country, the world has been thirsty and hungry in 2020 for some form of peace or solidarity and the truth is, that looks different from person to person but when I saw them standing there with pure love in their eyes for one another I could also see how their love affected the hearts of everyone else around them. They, in that moment, unintentionally, became THE symbol of American peace.

ADRIANAWEDDINGS.COM

21

HOW HAS THIS MOMENT IMPACTED YOUR BUSINESS AND LIFE? For one, it has made my public interview way more meaningful. As an officiant a lot of what I do is confidential as it pertains to counseling clients and usually everyone wants to talk about weddings all day long. Weddings are fun and pretty. That moment at the Black Lives Matter Protest in Philadelphia really assisted, not just me, but journalists, to ask me much deeper questions that I have waited my entire career to discuss. People are now getting to know and understand the WHY behind MARRIED by REV ROXY.

PHOTOGRAPHY: LINDA MCQUEEN PHOTOGRAPHY

THIS PANDEMIC HAS BEEN CHALLENGING FOR THOUSANDS IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY WORLDWIDE. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GET UP EVERY SINGLE DAY AND MOTIVATE NOT JUST YOURSELF, BUT OTHERS IN THE INDUSTRY? Because love has been winning and will continue to win above all else … nothing says it better than 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

Tell us about the Jaye Applewaite brand. What are the main things that you want brides to feel when they look at your designs and your brand as a whole? Jaye Applewaite dresses are effortless, stunning and sexy, made with gorgeous laces and intricate details. They are inspired by beautiful destination weddings and modern bridal fashion. My style is light, airy, feminine, effortless, romantic and beautiful, much like how I believe a bride should look and feel on her wedding day! My passion is to translate brides’ emotions, style and overall vision for their wedding day into the perfect dress. I pay very close attention to all the details and the fit of each dress. Each piece of lace is meticulously applied by hand, and each dress is fitted individually to the bride’s body — this is what makes the Jaye Applewaite design and fit process so unique. Your journey to becoming a Bridal Designer is quite amazing. Please share a little bit about it with us and explain how you think it has influenced your work and your drive to become one of the very best within the bridal fashion industry. In 2016 I left my career as a professional civil engineer to pursue a career in the bridal industry, regardless of having no formal training in fashion nor sewing. Being self-taught means that I have to use my problem solving and observation skills to determine how to design and create my dresses. My methods are not always traditional/formal and are quite unique to me. This is why my dresses have such a unique element. I have freedom to design and create, and am not bound by traditional/formal methods of sewing.

This year, we saw that you introduced “Analie Bridal APHOTOGRAPHY: D R I A N AELIZABETH WEDD I N PHOTOGRAPHY GS.COM AUSTIN

by Jaye Applewaite” and “Bliss Bridal”. Please share the inspiration behind these beautiful brands. Analie Bridal was created as an extension of the Jaye Applewaite brand to offer brides beautiful sexy dresses at a lower price point. The dresses are effortless, sexy and easy to wear, and perfect for a variety of weddings, from intimate elopements to larger luxury weddings. Bliss Bridal is a more conservative and traditional brand inspired by local (Barbadian) brides. Bliss Bridal offers classic, timeless and elegant wedding dresses and allows brides to mix and match tops, bottoms and accessories from the collections to create their custom bridal look. The fabrics used are luxurious duchess satin, classic embroidered floral applique laces, and bridal tulle.

Your Designer Look for a designer whose style and aesthetic matches your dream dress style. That way you will be confident he or she understands your vision and is capable of designing and creating your dream dress. Visit the designer’s website to learn more about the designer, their design style, order times, pricing, etc. Your Budget If you are still unsure about your budget or the designer’s price point, now is a good time to contact the designer with your pricing query to find out more about their pricing and determine if it suits your budget.

It’s safe to say that the new normal of isolation and social distancing has certainly changed the way that brides-to-be can now search for that perfect dress. What advice would you give to brides who have no idea where to begin? Your Inspiration When searching for dress inspiration, a few good places to start are the internet, Pinterest and Instagram. If you are wondering how a certain style or detail would look on your body type, find inspiration in photos of women with a similar body type to yours. Once you have all your inspiration, it’s time to narrow down to find your perfect bridal style which can be a combination of a few dress styles. Finding your wedding dress style is very personal. Deep down you know you want a particular look and feel, and you will naturally gravitate toward certain dresses and styles.

One of your main specialties is creating unique custom pieces for your beautiful brides-to-be. Do you think that as time progresses, you will still continue to offer this service, or would you eventually produce collections only? I will definitely continue to offer custom dress designs, alongside with dress collections. I love the idea of a custom dress and working one on one with my brides to design and create a dress that is uniquely theirs! It’s amazing how special and intimate the process is, and the end result is a dress that perfectly reflects the bride and her overall vision for her big day.

Do you think that going custom is the better decision, especially during this time? Yes! The beauty of custom design is that you get to combine your favourite elements into one dress, and work closely with a talented designer to create your perfect custom dress!

What would you say are the main challenges that brides will face in trying to find their dream wedding dress during covid-19? The main challenges are not being able to travel and try/fit dresses and ordering wedding dresses online. How do you think they could get through the issues, and still find/ design the dress that they have always envisioned? Some brides feel unsure of what style dress would best suit their body type, or they feel torn between different dress styles and would love the opportunity to try the dresses and select their favourite. Going custom is the perfect way to solve this challenge. Be aware of knock off websites that sell low quality or imitation designer dresses. Where possible, order directly from the designer or look on their website for boutiques that stock their dresses.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR BRIDAL PARTY Darcel de Vlugt shares her expert advice on how to choose the best bridal party for your wedding day. No matter the size or style, every bride deserves to be surrounded by a supportive and loving group of family and friends who will be there to help them plan one of the most special days of their lives.

Oh my goodness, you’re engaged… Let the wedding planning begin! A major part of the success of any wedding day depends on the people chosen to assist, guide and execute the multitude of items on that to-do list. It doesn’t matter whether you are having a multi-event wedding extravaganza, or the type of small, intimate ceremony that has become synonymous with the circumstances of 2020; apart from your betrothed, who you take the journey with in planning the start of a fruitful marriage is important. Choosing a bridal party in the past has depended on a number of factors, ranging from the traditional to the superficial and everything in-between. At the end of the day, this is a decision not to be taken lightly, If you choose to have a bridal party at all, then the “who” and the “why” matter, and could play a huge part in making or breaking your special day. Here are some key things to consider when making this decision: your most supportive This seems like such an obvious point to begin with, and yet so many people get caught up in the dressing up and showing up for the wedding day and

32

ADRIANAWEDDINGS.COM

the perks involved, with little consideration to the actual work that goes into getting married. Both you and your future spouse should consider who has really been there for you, both as individuals and within your relationship. Who have you been able to turn to for advice during your courtship? Who has always been there to pick up the phone and, at times, been there to help you pick up the pieces? Who has encouraged you to persevere during difficult times? Who is that one person you could not have made it this far without? Standing beside a couple on the day they make one of the biggest decisions of their lives is a real honour; it should also be an honour for the bride and groom to have the people they choose next to them.

your most encouraging It’s easy to think that encouraging friends are the same as supportive friends, but there is a difference! Your encouraging friends are the ones you include in some of the more exciting but potentially stressful aspects of wedding planning. While a supportive friend certainly cares about you in the long run and wants what’s best for you, it is possible to be unnecessarily critical in the name of support in situations where a bride - or groom - requires a positive, upbeat attitude and someone to make the fun parts of wedding planning, well… fun. Your encouraging friend is the one you take to try on dresses, the one who will play up your strengths and give you a confidence boost in your bride experience instead of telling you everything that’s wrong with what you’ve tried on. Your encouraging friend - while not a ‘yes’ man/woman - has an optimistic outlook about everything involved in getting you married. This person is less likely to worry about the fine-tuning of

certain details, but more concerned that you simply enjoy yourself on your day, no matter what happens. Family members/obligatory inclusions

There is no rule that a family member must be included in your bridal party, but many brides and grooms do feel like their sibling or cousin should be in there somewhere. If your sibling or close relative is one of your best friends, then you probably want them standing next to you on your day. However, let me approach this one with caution: a bride or groom should never feel obligated to have someone in their bridal party. This includes asking someone to be your bridesmaid as a way of returning the favour when they asked you several years ago, or including your Godmother’s teenage daughter as a way of appeasing your mother, and… you get my point. Granted, a few feathers may be ruffled by who doesn’t get asked, but always remember that you can’t please everyone, so you should probably focus on you and your husband/wife-to-be being happy before anyone else…which is sound advice for marriage on a whole, don’t you think? Your bridal party is essentially your support system, not just for the wedding

day itself, but in the entire experience of getting to the altar, which can last anywhere from a few weeks to over a year in some cases. Your bridal party is key to being able to delegate and execute tasks that will help everything run smoothly. Of course, you want some beautiful photos of you and your besties in their coordinated outfits, but ADRIANAWEDDINGS.COM

33

there’s a lot more to it than that. Do the members of your bridal party get along? Harmony within the group is really crucial to getting things done on the bride or groom’s behalf. Different personalities can come together beautifully when the focus remains the couple’s wellbeing. Can you trust who you have chosen to handle this while you are handling something else? Be aware of jealous, apathetic or competitive best friends or people you decide to include from different social circles you may have; it’s one thing for all walks of life to attend your wedding as guests, but can they come together as part of your inner circle at the altar?

34

At the end of the day, being realistic is as important as having your dream wedding. Your chosen bridesmaids or groomsmen - whether it’s one, or many should lift you up during difficult ADRIANAWEDDINGS.COM

times along the journey and keep you excited and focused about getting married and not just having a wedding. They should get along with those closest to you, like your parents and family members who may be helping you plan the wedding, and even possibly liaise with some of your vendors on your behalf. Being part of a bridal party is a huge responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly, so it’s also important as the bride and groom that you consider - and respect - obligations that individuals may have outside of being your bridesmaid or groomsman. This includes those who are studying, those who have children, or even those planning a wedding of their own. Last, but certainly not least, always budget accordingly when it comes to

your bridal party, how many you can afford to have by your side on your day and also whether they can afford to be with you in such a capacity. Never let a temporary wedding planning issue overshadow the value of a friendship. You don’t need a grand entourage to walk down the aisle, but being surrounded by love as you enter the covenant of marriage is priceless.

How cute is this? Kristi’s favourite moment was walking up to Matt during their first look and him twirling her around to see her dress.

As their wedding was during the Covid pandemic, they decided on 28 guests. All of their guests were so curious as to whether the pandemic negatively imapcted their special day, but thankfully it truly did not and the couple loved every single minute. They invited their closest friends and family to keep it sweet and intimate, and were extremely lucky to be able to have their dream wedding just as they hoped it would be even with Covid.

Our original plan was to have our wedding at sunset on Trunk Bay Beach, but because the Coronavirus struck, there were some new rules about gatherings on the beach, and one of them was that the beaches had to close at 4pm on the weekends. We did not want to have the wedding in the middle of the day on a crowded beach, so we looked elsewhere. We decided on susannaberg (Neptune’s Lookout). It took my breath away the first time I saw it. All of our guests were in awe of the view from the mountaintop. I really believe that everything happens for a reason, and that we were meant to have our wedding up there. It was so spectacular- I would not have changed one single thing about it.”

Elopement Date: 19th February, 2020. How did you meet: “We met on New Year’s Eve of 2012 in a local pub. It wasn’t a pub either of us would normally go to so felt weird to bump into each other there!” The Proposal: “We were on holiday in Mauritius in 2018. We had been together for about 6 years so I was really hoping this holiday would be it! We had been there for a week and were having such a good time, then one night after going on quite a boozy boat trip he booked a private dinner on the beach. I had an inkling when I saw the table all set out with fairy lights so spent the whole meal waiting for the question. He waited until we had 4 courses and 2 hours later and said “right let’s go then” - I was so disappointed that it wasn’t it so said “oh no let’s stay for a bit more”, then he got onto one knee and proposed. Everyone from the restaurant had been waiting just as long as me so they cheered from the balcony! It was really special and we had another few days in paradise to celebrate!” Fondest memory: (Bride) “I loved the ceremony! We just spent the whole time smiling and I was just beaming to be there!” (Groom) “The moment we became husband and wife but I can’t really pick it was all perfect.”

“We started looking around venues in England and to be honest they scared us away! We like to do things our way - we run our own business (nelson & pops) and don’t like too much structure of formality so talk about napkin folds and timings of the day just put us off. Not only that but we didn’t want to spend so much money on what felt like other people’s dinner. We just wanted to do things our way and at the end of the day we only cared about getting married and nothing else. So, we thought we would go somewhere far. We didn’t formally invite friends or family as it was such an expense for them, but our closest family booked right away and we couldn’t have been happier that they were coming to join us!”

“We had never been to barbados, but a couple of james’s sisters had been and loved it. we wanted to go somewhere new, by the beach and that we could also stay at for the honeymoon”.

The couple found Amber Dawn Photography on Instagram. They saw her work and knew instantly that she was the one. They scheduled a Whatsapp call with her and the rest is history. They loved her personality, communication, beautiful emails and quirky forms. They met her the night before the wedding.

“this is our favourite photograph. it was the moment he pronounced us as husband and wife and it was just such a happy time. Thank you to amber for positioning us and my dress perfectly to make it such a lovely photograph too! Amber wasn’t just a photographer, she felt like a friend and a maid of honour at the same time! I didn’t know when to put my bouquet down and any of the etiquette so she helped to just have that person there!”

“I went to the first appointment with my mOTHER and always thought i would go for a really low back and fishtail. i didn’t find any that i felt comfortable in at my first appointment. The second, i fell in love with Morilee’s designs so took james’s sister with me and that is when we found the one! i just felt so comfortable in it and like it was ‘me’. i wanted more detail on the arms so decided to add some lace sleeves. My tailor was so wonderful to work with and her eye for detail and optimism made the whole experience so lovely. She added the sleeves for me. i loved the sleeves because i could also tuck them in when i wanted to relax a little more or have a dance so it felt like a two in one! i loved the lace detail and the bodice and it just felt so light and comfortable.”

Chloe and James chose Bianca from Elope Barbados as their wedding planner. She was amazing and planned everything perfectly. She arranged the florals, arch, chairs and all of the additional details and it all suited the couple so well. They both agreed that “having Amber and Bianca together felt very special.”

The bride’s dress was designed by Morilee, and her hair was styled by The Loft Barbados. ADRIANAWEDDINGS.COM

“Having an intimate wedding was so perfect for us looking back. Although it wouldn’t be for everyone so our main tip would be, do not stress. I was a fairly laid-back bride, I only decided who was walking down the aisle on the day of the wedding! It rained most of the day of our wedding, apart from the ceremony but we couldn’t have cared less. It was so special to just get married and be with our family. napkins, flowers and other people’s dinners were totally irrelevant.”

How lovely is this? Simple, sweet and 100% Lynette and Hisam. The decor for this sweet day was done by the wedding co-ordinator from Hotel Xcaret Mexico.

They decided to make their elopement an all-in-one experience. They stayed at Hotel Xcaret for their honeymoon also, and had the most relaxing and amazing time.

“I found Quetzal Wedding Photo by a simple google search of weddings at Hotel Xcaret and loved their style Fun and clean. I decided they were the photographers for us after the first phone conversation I had with heather toepke! She had great energy and had the personality of someone I would like to work with.

It was almost no stress and we didn’t have to worry about anyone but us. In the end it’s just you two so why not start it out that way. We did have a big blow out for friends and family back home two weeks later. People still think it’s the best wedding they went to because it was just a party.”

Funny story, he planned to do it in italy on a trip two weeks prior, but due to religious reasons, his mom didn’t think it was an auspicious time to do so. He did however already plan it out and had a photographer hired. So he still surprised me on lake Como with a romantic couples photo shoot. It made me think he was going to propose, then he didn’t. Then when we got back to trinidad, he asked me out to luce on a thursday. So it was pretty obvious. But i played along.”

“We planned a vacation together to Europe for a couple weeks to visit some family and see our first live EPL game. We were walking back to our hotel in Amsterdam on Christmas Eve in 2017. There was a little side street that we were walking down that was all decorated over the canal, and we stopped to look at the lights. We paused for a second, and he popped the question. It was just the two of us, and it was perfect.”

We wanted them to feel like they were on a vacation too.

Even though my day-to-day style is pretty basic, There was just something different about that dress than all the others I had tried on. It checked every box in my mind. The Poinciana Bride

bursts of flaming red in full bloom... “The hallmark of Summers in Nassau are the bursts of flaming red all throughout the island as the poinciana trees signal to all that they are in full bloom. The beauty and vibrancy of the “flame tree”, as it is known in some cultures, has always been an eyecatcher in the same way a bride is on her big day...”

the Poinciana Bride isn’t afraid to stand out...

The modern acrylic invitation was created by Cordial Affairs.

“As restrictions were briefly lifted following strict lockdown measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, each of us creatives felt the need to come together to create something beautiful. When Phylicia Duncombe approached me about wanting to do a styled shoot, those poincianas, the hallmark of Summer, came to mind and I began dreaming of the concept of “the Poinciana Bride”. Within a matter of days, we were able to conceptualize and bring the vendors together for the shoot. Everyone had creative liberty within the overall aesthetic, as we did not want to stifle anyone after weeks of already being quarantined. The hardest part of it all, in fact, was finding the perfect poinciana tree: one with branches sweeping the ground, in full bloom.”

“The shoot was centered around the poinciana tree, which blooms quite flamboyantly in shades of red (and sometimes yellow). Our focus was the shades of red, mixed in with greenery and beautiful tropical flowers. We wanted the bride to represent the season (summer), island life and the essence of the bridal experience: to stand out, to catch the eye, to make you pause, look and breathe in beauty. Poinciana is not a flower typically chosen by brides. It’s fragile, droops easily due to heat exposure, and the pollen can stain (so definitely a danger for white wedding gowns), but it is so beautiful and enchanting that it deserved a moment to shine.”

ADRIANAWEDDINGS.COM

173

The breathtaking wedding dress was designed by Bridal Designer Phylicia Ellis.

“The hardest part of putting together this shoot was finding the perfect poinciana tree. There are many scattered across the island and on the side of the road, but our tree had to be surrounded by greenery, have low hanging branches and be in full bloom. It was tricky as we were nearing the end of the flowering season for poincianas so many were losing their fullness. I asked people on social media to tag me in beautiful trees that they saw. Quite a few people tagged me in this one and after driving past it myself, I had to agree it was OUR tree.

We absolutely lOVE debbie cake Artistry. What is the story behind this beautiful brand? How did you start the company? Hi, I’m Teri the creative behind the brand Debbie Cake Artistry. Everything I know about cakes, I learnt from Debbie, my mom, hence the name Debbie Cake Artistry. She has more than 20 years experience in the cake world as she came from a background of running the largest (at it’s time) cake department in the country, and because of that I’ve always been exposed to cakes (Summer jobs, etc). Often I get asked if we’re formally trained in the artistic side of cakes, and we’re actually not, we’re self taught (art runs in our family). Debbie has certifications in the science of baking and I come from a background of Sales and Marketing. Debbie Cake Artistry has been around a lot longer than people realize, but it wasn’t until I officially came on board full time about two years ago and launched our social media page that it turned into a brand. This is in thanks to some of the best wedding vendors in the industry: Events by Tricia, Amanda Drew of Drew Manor and Brian at AbFab Events supporting and encouraging Debbie, as she was doing limited orders at the time (pre-IG). I was really the one dragging my feet to launch social media, as I wasn’t sure if I wanted to commit to cakes full time.

208

ADRIANAWEDDINGS.COM

How has the company evolved from inception to now? Still evolving! But I’m a lot more selective with the commissions I take on from potential clients, in keeping with my artistic style/aesthetics. Covid has also pushed me to be much more efficient with where and whom I focus my time, as I’ve come to value having personal time, focusing on other ventures/interests beyond cake. And well, to just enjoy having a personal life. Not everyone realizes how much time/labor goes into cake and also the communication throughout the ordering process. What is the most intricate wedding cake that you have created and what did the process look like? Honestly, everything is a blur. Ha. I usually just remember the final product and sort of forget about the time spent/lack of sleep/pain that went into making the cakes. But if I had to choose one, I’d say Nissa’s - because of the mini cakes. I pulled in a team for that wedding and I’m still upset to this day that I didn’t get to actually go to the reception because of exhaustion. I slept for 1 hour. But the final look and effect with the mini cake wall and main cake was worth it!

“Often I get asked if we’re formally trained in the artistic side of cakes, and we’re actually not, we’re self taught - art runs in our family.”

Are there any cake artists that you adore and that inspire you? Absolutely! Maggie Austen is the OG of the style of sugar florals we adore today, along with Jasmine Rae and Lima cakes. There are so many great artists out there doing their thing and revolutionizing what we think about cakes. Can’t name them all! You truly create one of a kind wedding cakes, and continue to lead the way in this category within Trinidad & Tobago. How do you think you have been able to accomplish this and what advice would you give to others who are interested in becoming cake artists? Aw thank you! Gut, intuition and hard work. Plus - I also have the best clients (being totally biased) who let me do my thing! Could you share your design process for creating your masterpieces with us?

What are some of the main challenges that you have experienced working as a cake artist within the wedding industry? I would say changing attitudes to the cake industry as a whole. Cake back then and still to some people, is just that, a cake. I’m focused on the art, with my preferred medium being sugar/cakes. Of course, cakes still need to taste good, otherwise what’s the point. What is your favourite part about your job as a cake artist? Freedom. Freedom to manage my work hours, to choose commissions that appeal to my style. I also enjoy the variety, as every cake I do is different. No replicas. Finally, what’s next for Debbie Cake Artistry? Who knows! Still learning and dabbling with styles, techniques and having fun along the way. Perhaps, the opportunity to travel and teach. I love travel!

Don’t really have a design process. It’s very organic and happens naturally based on my communication and interactions with potential clients. If I’m vibing with them, even better!

“gut, intuition and hard work. Plus - i have the best clients who let me do my thing!”

“We always said we didn’t want to have a big wedding, since this was our second time around. The agreement was that we would just wake up one day, and decide we would get married. Belize has always been Jill’s favorite place...then the logistics became clear, it was going to be impossible to plan all those pieces from afar. Dwight first met the photographer, Haydee Lu, then she introduced him to Melody of Dulce Belize Weddings, planner extraordinaire!” JILL & DWIGHT

“I highly recommend hiring a wedding planner or even a day-of wedding coordinator. I truly would not have had such a stress free wedding day without the help of my planners. I think it so important to be able to enjoy your wedding day so any help that you can get on the day of is a MUST!” KRISTAL & ADMIR
