T he researchers st udied 45 chimpanzees f rom t hree dif f erent groups f or t he 2008, 2009 and 2010 nut -cracking seasons, as t hey use t ools t o open kola nut s f rom a t ropical Af rican t ree of t he same name. T he chimps use hard “nut crackers,” which t hey craf t f rom mat erials t hey f ind in t heir environment , t o break t he skin of t hese nut s against t ree root “anvils.” T he nut s are hard at t he beginning of t he season, becoming sof t er and easier t o crack open over t ime.
