T he wonderf ul Lat in phrase – ‘Qui docet discit’ – ‘Who teaches learns’ – very elegant ly expresses a powerf ul learning and t eaching maxim, t hat :

A very good way to learn something is to teach it to someone else. When we t ry t o learn somet hing ourselves, we usually t ry t o underst and and acquire t he knowledge or skill in a simple direct way, t ypically using a single sense (reading, or list ening). T his can be challenging, especially if t he knowledge or skill is very new t o us, and/or out side of our nat ural st rengt hs and pref erences. We also t end t o t ry t o replicat e t he knowledge – t o copy it rat her t han int erpret it – int o our memory. We t end not t o analyze what we are t rying t o learn any more t han is absolut ely necessary. We might use cert ain memorizing t echniques also based on copying, such as verbal repet it ion, or writ ing it , t o accelerat e and reinf orce t he t ransf er of inf ormat ion int o our own brains. T his t ype of learning can become boring and t edious. None of t his helps us t o be very aware of what and how we are learning, nor does it help us t o assimilat e t he learning at a deep level. When we are t rying t o learn somet hing ourselves we t end t o do it superf icially, which means we are less likely t o ret ain t he knowledge/skills af t erwards, unless we use and pract ice what we have learned. However, when inst ead we approach a subject wit h t he aim of teaching it to someone else, our underst anding, ret ent ion and command of t he new knowledge/skill is of t en dramat ically improved, compared t o simply learning it f or ourselves. T his is due t o several f act ors: our mot ivat ion/need t o learn t ends t o increase, because we have a responsibilit y t owards someone else, which increases our commit ment and diligence we t hink about and analyze t he new knowledge/skill on a deeper level in order t o underst and it , in order t o int erpret it s meaning, t o explain it t o ot hers we t end t o pract ice and rehearse t he knowledge/skill more t han we

would if merely learning it f or ourselves – because of t he increased pressure and risks in being responsible f or explaining it t o someone else – we don’t want t o make a mist ake, especially as our mist akes are exposed t o anot her person (t his pressure/diligence increases wit h t he number of people we are t eaching) we are inclined learn more t han t he bare f act s/skill, because learners ask quest ions of t heir t eachers, and we want t o be prepared f or unf oreseen quest ions and learning needs we work wit h t he subject in various communicat ions media – reading, verbal, visual, physical/bodily, et c., in designing and delivering t he t eaching we become proud of our command and responsibilit y f or t he t eaching – t his increases t he at t ract iveness of t he personal learning, and so we are more likely t o develop a f ondness f or t he subject , because it makes us f eel good we t ranslat e or adapt t he knowledge or skill suf f icient ly t o opt imize it s accessibilit y and appeal t o t he learner – being able t o adapt /t ranslat e knowledge/skill requires a much deeper cont rol of t he subject t han merely absorbing f or self -learning we might addit ionally advise t he learner as t o how t o implement /apply t he learning, and be involved in f ollowing-up af t er t he t eaching t o assess how t he learner has absorbed and underst ood and applied t he new knowledge/skill all t his guarant ees t hat we will have had t o approach t he subject in a mult i-sensory way, and mult i-experient ial way t oo, which subst ant ially improves our own underst anding and ret ent ion of t he subject /skill And all t his is represent ed by t he phrase:

Qui docet discit – Who teaches learns.
