Sara Jones is a polymorphic playwright, Tony Award-winning monologist, UNICEF ambassador, firebrand and FCC-fighting poet — she assumes as many roles offstage as on. “Chameleon-like” barely describes t he ast onishing ease wit h which Sarah Jones slips in and out of t he charact ers in her solo perf ormances — as many as f ourt een personae in her of f -Broadway hit Bridge & Tunnel. Crit ics marvel not only at her abilit y t o perf ect ly mimic accent s and mannerisms, but also t o seemingly reshape her body, down t o pupils and dimples, in t he blink of an eye. In t his hilariously lively perf ormance, act ress Sarah Jones channels some individuals she has met in her lif e, just a sample of her spect acular charact er range. Sara Jones is get t ing int o t hose charact ers and role playing t o help us f ind ways t o underst and and communicat e wit h each ot her across race, class, religion, et c. She embodies our collect ive humanit y t hrough each charact er and reminds us t hat t hrough all of our dif f erences, we are t ruly one, we are drops of one ocean; we are t he unit y in diversit y. You can f ind below t he t ranscript of t he speech: I should t ell you t hat when I was asked t o be here, I t hought t o myself t hat well, it ’s T ED. And t hese T EDst ers are — you know, as innocent as t hat name sounds – t hese are t he philant hropist s and art ist s and scient ist s who sort of shape our world. And what could I possibly have t o say t hat would be dist inguished enough t o just if y my part icipat ion in somet hing like t hat ? And so I t hought perhaps a really civilized-sounding Brit ish accent might help t hings a bit .

And t hen I t hought no, no. I should just get up t here and be myself and just t alk t he way I really t alk because, af t er all, t his is t he great unveiling. And so I t hought I’d come up here and unveil my real voice t o you. Alt hough many of you already know t hat I do speak t he Queen’s English because I am f rom Queens, New York. (Laught er) But t he t heme of t his session, of course, is invent ion. And while I don’t have any pat ent s t hat I’m aware of , you will be meet ing a f ew of my invent ions t oday. I suppose it ’s f air t o say t hat I am int erest ed in t he invent ion of self or selves. We’re all born int o cert ain circumst ances wit h part icular physical t rait s, unique development al experiences, geographical and hist orical cont ext s. But t hen what ? T o what ext ent do we self -const ruct , do we self -invent ? How do we self -ident if y and how mut able is t hat ident it y? Like, what if one could be anyone at any t ime? Well my charact ers, like t he ones in my shows, allow me t o play wit h t he spaces bet ween t hose quest ions. And so I’ve brought a couple of t hem wit h me. And well, t hey’re very excit ed. What I should t ell you – what I should t ell you is t hat t hey’ve each prepared t heir own lit t le T ED t alks. So f eel f ree t o t hink of t his as Sarah Universit y.(Laught er) Okay. Okay. Oh, well. Oh, wonderf ul. Good evening everybody. T hank you so very much f or having me here t oday. Ah, t hank you very much. My name is Lorraine Levine. Oh my! T here’s so many of you. Hi sweet heart . Okay. (Laught er) Anyway, I am here because of a young girl, Sarah Jones. She’s a very nice, young black girl. Well you know, she calls herself black – she’s really more like a caramel color if you look at her. But anyway. (Laught er) She has me here because she put s me in her show, what she calls her one-woman show. And you know what t hat means, of course. T hat means she t akes t he credit and t hen makes us come out here and do all t he work. But I don’t mind. Frankly, I’m kvelling just t o be here wit h all t he luminaries you have at t ending somet hing like t his, you know. Really, it ’s amazing. Not only, of course, t he scient ist s and all t he wonderf ul giant s of t he indust ries but t he celebrit ies. T here are so many celebrit ies running around here. I saw — Glenn Close I saw earlier. I love her. And she was get t ing a yogurt in t he Google caf e. Isn’t t hat adorable? (Laught er)So many ot hers you see, t hey’re just wonderf ul. It ’s lovely t o know t hey’re concerned, you know. And — oh, I saw Goldie Hawn. Oh, Goldie Hawn. I love her, t oo; she’s wonderf ul. Yeah. You know, she’s only half Jewish. Did you know t hat about her? Yeah. But even so, a wonderf ul t alent . (Laught er) And I — you know, when I saw her, such a wonderf ul f eeling. Yeah, she’s lovely. But anyway, I should have st art ed by saying just how lucky I f eel. It ’s such an eye-opening experience t o be here. You’re all so responsible f or t his world t hat we live in t oday. You know, I couldn’t have dreamed of such a t hing as a young girl. And you’ve all made t hese advancement s happen in such a short t ime – you’re all so young. You know, your parent s must be very proud. But I — I also appreciat e t he diversit y t hat you have here. I not iced it ’s very mult icult ural. You know, when you’re st anding up here, you can see all t he

dif f erent people. It ’s like a rainbow. It ’s okay t o say rainbow. Yeah. I just — I can’t keep up wit h whet her you can say, you know, t he dif f erent t hings. What are you allowed t o say or not say? I just — I don’t want t o of f end anybody. You know. But anyway, you know, I just t hink t hat t o be here wit h all of you accomplished young people – lit erally, some of you, t he archit ect s building our bright er f ut ure. You know, it ’s heart ening t o me. Even t hough, quit e f rankly, some of your present at ions are horrif ying, absolut ely horrif ying. It ’s t rue. It ’s t rue. You know, bet ween t he environment al degradat ion and t he crashing of t he world market s you’re t alking about . And of course, we know it ’s all because of t he — all t he … Well, I don’t know how else t o say it t o you, so I’ll just say it my way: t he ganeyvish scht icklich coming f rom t he government s and t he, you know, t he bankers and t he Wall St reet . You know it . Anyway. (Laught er) T he point is, I’m happy somebody has pract ical ideas t o get us out of t his mess. So I salut e each of you and your st ellar achievement s. T hank you f or all t hat you do. And congrat ulat ions on being such big makhers t hat you’ve become T ED meist ers. So, happy cont inued success. Congrat ulat ions. Mazel t ov.(Applause) Hi. Hi. T hank you everybody. Sorry, t his is such a wonderf ul opport unit y and everyt hing, t o be here right now. My name is Noraida. And I’m just – I’m so t hrilled t o be part of like your T ED conf erence t hat you’re doing and everyt hing like t hat . I am Dominican-American. Act ually, you could say I grew up in t he capit al of Dominican Republic, ot herwise known as Washingt on Height s in New York Cit y. But I don’t know if t here’s any ot her Dominican people here, but I know t hat Juan Enriquez, he was here yest erday. And I t hink he’s Mexican, so t hat ’s – honest ly, t hat ’s close enough f or me right now. So – (Laught er) I just — I’m sorry. I’m just t rying not t o be nervous because t his is a very wonderf ul experience f or me and everyt hing. And I just — you know I’m not used t o doing t he public speaking. And whenever I get nervous I st art t o t alk really f ast . Nobody can underst and not hing I’m saying, which is very f rust rat ing f or me, as you can imagine. I usually have t o just like t ry t o calm down and t ake a deep breat h. But t hen on t op of t hat , you know, Sarah Jones t old me we only have 18 minut es. So t hen I’m like, should I be nervous, you know, because maybe it ’s bet t er. And I’m just t rying not t o panic and f reak out . So I like, t ake a deep breat h. Okay. Sorry. So anyway, what I was t rying t o say is t hat I really love T ED. Like, I love everyt hing about t his. It ’s amazing. Like, it ’s — I can’t get over t his right now. And, like, people would not believe, seriously, where I’m f rom, t hat t his even exist s. You know, like even, I mean I love like t he name, t he — T ED. I mean I know it ’s a real person and everyt hing, but I’m just saying t hat like, you know, I t hink it ’s very cool how it ’s also an acronym, you know, which is like, you know, is like very high concept and everyt hing like t hat . I like t hat . And act ually, I can relat e t o t he whole like acronym t hing and

everyt hing. Because, act ually, I’m a sophomore at college right now. At my school — act ually I was part of co-f ounding an organizat ion, which is like a leadership t hing, you know, like you guys, you would really like it and everyt hing. And t he organizat ion is called DA BOMB, A\and DA BOMB — not like what you guys can build and everyt hing –it ’s like, DA BOMB, it means like Dominican — it ’s an acronym – Dominican-American Benevolent Organizat ion f or Mot hers and Babies. So, I know, see, like t he name is like a lit t le bit long, but wit h t he war on t error and everyt hing, t he Dean of St udent Act ivit ies has asked us t o st op saying DA BOMB and use t he whole t hing so nobody would get t he wrong idea, what ever. So, basically like DA BOMB – what Dominican-American Benevolent Organizat ion f or Mot hers and Babies does is, basically, we t ry t o advocat e f or st udent s who show a lot of academic promise and who also happen t o be mot hers like me.I am a working mot her, and I also go t o school f ull-t ime. And, you know, it ’s like — it ’s so import ant t o have like role models out t here. I mean, I know somet imes our lif est yles are very dif f erent , what ever. But like even at my job — like, I just got promot ed. Right now it ’s very excit ing act ually f or me because I’m t he Junior Assist ant t o t he Associat e Direct or under t he Senior Vice President f or Business Development – t hat ’s my new t it le. So, but I t hink whet her you own your own company or you’re just st art ing out like me, like somet hing like t his is so vit al f or people t o just cont inue expanding t heir minds and learning. And if everybody, like all people really had access t o t hat , it would be a very dif f erent world out t here, as I know you know. So, I t hink all people, we need t hat , but especially, I look at people like me, you know like, I mean, Lat inos — we’re about t o be t he majorit y, in like t wo weeks. So, we deserve just as much t o be part of t he exchange of ideas as everybody else. So, I’m very happy t hat you’re, you know, doing t his kind of t hing, making t he t alks available online. T hat ’s very good. I love t hat . And I just — I love you guys. I love T ED. And if you don’t mind, privat ely now, in t he f ut ure, I’m going t o t hink of T EDas an acronym f or T echnology, Ent ert ainment and Dominicans. T hank you very much. (Laught er)(Applause) So, t hat was Noraida, and just like Lorraine and everybody else you’re meet ing t oday, t hese are f olks who are based on real people f rom my real lif e: f riends, neighbors, f amily members. I come f rom a mult icult ural f amily. In f act , t he older lady you just met : very, very loosely based on a great aunt on my mot her’s side. It ’s a long st ory, believe me. But on t op of my f amily background, my parent s also sent me t o t he Unit ed Nat ions school, where I encount ered a plet hora of new charact ers, including Alexandre, my French t eacher, okay. Well, you know, it was beginner French, t hat I am t aking wit h her, you know. And it was Madame Bousson, you know, she was very [French]. It was like, you know, she was t here in t he class, you know, she was kind of t ypically French. You know, she was very chic, but she was very f illed wit h ennui, you know. And she would be t here, you know, kind of t alking wit h t he class, you

know, t alking about t he, you know, t he exist ent ial f ut ilit y of lif e, you know. And we were only 11 years old, so it was not appropriat e. (Laught er) But [German]. Yes, I t ook German f or t hree years, [German], and it was quit e t he experience because I was t he only black girl in t he class, even in t he UN school. Alt hough, you know, it was wonderf ul. T he t eacher, Herr Scht opf , he never discriminat ed. Never. He always, always t reat ed each of us, you know, equally unbearably during t he class. So, t here were t he t eachers and t hen t here were my f riends, classmat es f rom everywhere, many of whom are st ill dear f riends t o t his day. And t hey’ve inspired many charact ers as well. For example, a f riend of mine. Well, I just want ed t o quickly say good evening. My name is Praveen Manvi and t hank you very much f or t his opport unit y. Of course, T ED, t he reput at ion precedes it self all over t he world. But , you know, I am originally f rom India, and I want ed t o st art by t elling you t hat once Sarah Jones t old me t hat we will be having t he opport unit y t o come here t o T ED in Calif ornia, originally, I was very pleased and, f rankly, relieved because, you know, I am a human right s advocat e. And usually my work, it t akes me t o Washingt on D.C. And t here, I must at t end t hese meet ings, mingling wit h some t iresome polit icians,t rying t o make me f eel comf ort able by t elling how of t en t hey are eat ing t he curry in Georget own. (Laught er) So, you can just imagine — right . So, but I’m t hrilled t o be joining all of you here. I wish we had more t ime t oget her, but t hat ’s f or anot her t ime. Okay? Great . (Applause) And, sadly, I don’t t hink we’ll have t ime f or you t o meet everybody I brought , but – I’m t rying t o behave myself , it ’s my f irst t ime here. But I do want t o int roduce you t o a couple of f olks you may recognize, if you saw “Bridge and T unnel.” Uh, well, t hank you. Good evening. My name is Pauline Ning, and f irst I want t o t ell you t hat I’m – of course I am a member of t he Chinese communit y in New York. But when Sarah Jones asked me t o please come t o T ED, I said, well, you know, f irst , I don’t know t hat , you know – bef ore t wo years ago, you would not f ind me in f ront of an audience of people, much less like t his because I did not like t o give speeches because I f eel t hat , as an immigrant , I do not have good English skills f or speaking. But t hen, I decided, just like Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, I t ry anyway. (Laught er) My daught er — my daught er wrot e t hat , she t old me, “Always st art your speech wit h humor.” But my background – I want t o t ell you st ory only brief ly. My husband and I, we brought our son and daught er here in 1980s t o have t he f reedom we cannot have in China at t hat t ime. And we t ried t o t each our kids t o be proud of t heir t radit ion, but it ’s very hard. You know, as immigrant , I would speak Chinese t o t hem, and t hey would always answer me back in English. T hey love rock music, pop cult ure, American cult ure. But when t hey got older, when t he t ime comes f or t hem t o st art t hink about get t ing married, t hat ’s when we expect t hem t o realize, a lit t le bit more, t heir own cult ure. But t hat ’s where we had some

problems. My son, he says he is not ready t o get married. And he has a sweet heart , but she is American woman, not Chinese. It ’s not t hat it ’s bad, but I t old him, “What ’s wrong wit h a Chinese woman?” But I t hink he will change his mind soon. So, t hen I decide inst ead, I will concent rat e on my daught er. T he daught er’s marriage is very special t o t he mom. But f irst , she said she’s not int erest ed. She only want s t o spend t ime wit h her f riends. And t hen at college, it ’s like she never came home. And she doesn’t want me t o come and visit . So I said, “What ’s wrong in t his pict ure?” So, I accused my daught er t o have like a secret boyf riend. But she t old me, “Mom, you don’t have t o worry about boys because I don’t like t hem.” (Laught er) And I said, “Yes, men can be dif f icult , but all women have t o get used t o t hat .” She said, “No Mom. I mean, I don’t like boys. I like girls. I am lesbian.” So, I always t each my kids t o respect American ideas, but I t old my daught er t hat t his is one except ion – (Laught er) – t hat she is not gay, she is just conf used by t his American problem. But she t old me, “Mom, it ’s not American.” She said she is in love — in love wit h a nice Chinese girl. (Laught er) So, t hese are t he words I am wait ing t o hear, but f rom my son, not my daught er. (Laught er) But at f irst I did not know what t o do. But t hen, over t ime, I have come t o underst and t hat t his is who she is. So, even t hough somet imes it ’s st ill hard, I will share wit h you t hat it helps me t o realize societ y is more t olerant , usually because of places like t his, because of ideas like t his, and people like you, wit h an open mind. So I t hink maybe T ED, you impact people’s lives in t he ways maybe even you don’t realize. So, f or my daught er’s sake, I t hank you f or your ideas wort h spreading. T hank you. Xie xie. (Applause) Good evening. My name is Habbi Belahal. And I would like t o f irst of all t hank Sarah Jones f or put t ing all of t he pressure on t he only Arab who she brought wit h her t o be last t oday. I am originally f rom Jordan. And I t each comparat ive lit erat ure at Queens College. It is not Harvard. But I f eel a bit like a f ish out of wat er. But I am very proud of my st udent s. And I see t hat a f ew of t hem did make it here t o t he conf erence. So you will get t he ext ra credit I promised you. But , while I know t hat I may not look like t he t ypical T ED-izen, as you would say, I do like t o make t he point t hat we in global societ y, we are never as dif f erent as t he appearances may suggest . So, if you will indulge me, I will share quickly wit h you a bit of verse, which I memorized as a young girl at 16 years of age. So, back in t he ancient t imes. [Arabic] And t his roughly t ranslat es: “Please, let me hold your hand. I want t o hold your hand. I want t o hold your hand. And when I t ouch you, I f eel happy inside. It ’s such a f eeling t hat my love, I can’t hide, I can’t hide, I can’t hide.” Well, so okay, but please, please, but please. If it is sounding f amiliar, it is because I was at t he same t ime in my lif e list ening t o t he Beat les. On t he radio [unclear], t hey were very popular. So, all of t hat is t o say t hat I like t o believe t hat f or every word int ended as t o render us deaf t o one anot her, t here is always a lyric connect ing ears and

heart s across t he cont inent s in rhyme. And I pray t hat t his is t he way t hat we will self -invent , in t ime. T hat ’s all, shukran. T hank you very much f or t he opport unit y. Okay? Great . (Applause) T hank you all very much. It was lovely. T hank you f or having me. (Applause) T hank you very, very much. I love you. (Applause) Well, you have t o let me say t his. I just — t hank you. I want t o t hank Chris and Jacqueline, and just everyone f or having me here. It ’s been a long t ime coming, and I f eel like I’m home. And I know I’ve perf ormed f or some of your companies or some of you have seen me elsewhere, but t his is honest ly one of t he best audiences I’ve ever experienced. T he whole t hing is amazing, and so don’t you all go reinvent ing yourselves any t ime soon.
