We still have the compulsory skills? T he harder “business as usual” world we have become used t o is no longer sat isf ying our need f or closeness, at t ent ion and personal cont act . More and more we are looking f or ways t o express t he f eelings we have been t rained t o bot t le up f or so many years. Disciplines such as mindf ulness, yoga, alt ernat ive and compliment ary medicines, are t eaching us skills t hat will help bring us back t o a more relat ionship- orient ed world, while sof t skills and t he use of conscious body language are again becoming int egral t o our healt h, success and peace of mind. T he challenge is t hat many of us alive t oday never learned t hese skills, or we have f orgot t en t hem because t hey have been suppressed f or so long. We have been t rained or condit ioned t o ignore our f eelings in order t o perf orm bet t er. Some have even had t heir abilit y t o f eel medicat ed away t o allow t hem t o “cope” wit h t heir current sit uat ion. Societ y in general has become more concerned wit h t he lat est work project , f ashion, gadget or gossip t o leave lit t le t ime t o care about consciously t aking invent ory of our f eelings. T he result is t hat we have become used t o living “unconsciously”. T his is producing dire consequences t o how we relat e t o each ot her and t o
t he world. On t he business side, some leading decision makers are beginning t o not ice a diminishing rat e of ret urn on t echnological invest ment . More and more are st art ing t o look seriously at using sof t skills t o lower worker st ress, communicat e bet t er, increase perf ormance, and creat e more loyal relat ionships. Could t his be a t rend t hat is wort h invest igat ing f urt her? How can we prof it f rom increasing our sof t skills set as well as our abilit y t o use t hem?
Lack of trust, the current situation We have not so f ar complet ed t he most dest ruct ive cent ury in hist ory. Some est imat es put last cent ury’s loss of human lif e, due t o war alone, at over 100 million souls. T his does not count all t he men, women and children who died due t o st arvat ion, drought or any number of diseases we now know how t o prevent . It was also t he cent ury where t he most -ever mat erial wealt h was creat ed and – many would say – covet ed.
