Friends and family say Senior Airman Pascal Nyowatchon has a smile that’s contagious and a personality that fills a room. “I come to work happy every day,” Nyowatchon said “I smile, I laugh.” His decision to always keep smiling is a goal he set at a young age. Nyowatchon grew up in Togo, a small tropical country in western Africa and the site of political turmoil for more than 50 years, forcing families like Nyowatchon’s to be uprooted from
their homes and seek refuge in neighboring countries. “I remember being a little kid not knowing what’s going on,” Nyowatchon said. “We just left everything behind. It was tough.” That hardship is what motivated him to keep his head up, work hard and influence others to maintain their resilience. “I learned from a young age that when things come your way, embrace it,” Nyowatchon said. “Stop complaining. Life is not meant to be easy, so just take one step at a time.” In early 2005, Nyowatchon and his family found themselves fleeing See OATH, Page 2

The Vehicle Registration office on Kapaun Air Station, has optimized its procedures in processing patrons to better serve the members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community. A portion of the optimization included a reorganization of the building’s interior enhancing the efficiency of the facility and customer comfortability. “The first change we made was to the layout,” said Staff Sgt. This time, while in Ghana, they applied for a Visa to come to the United States. “I always wanted to come to the U.S. and go to school and get my education done and have a better life,” Nyowatchon said. After two years of waiting and filing out documents, his family was approved to come to the U.S. and gaining his citizenship became his new goal. It wasn’t until 2013 that his persistence paid off and Nyowatchon raised his hand, took an oath and became a U.S. citizen. “I can recall it, yes, it was really nice,” Nyowatchon said with a light
in his eyes. “I made sure I dressed up, I was looking sharp and holding the U.S. flag and I remember singing the national anthem. It was like I was an original American.” Nyowatchon planned to go to school and further his education but something else was at the back of his mind. “It always came back to me,” Nyowatchon said. “I promised something to an immigration officer that I would defend the U.S. Constitution.” Today, he serves as a client system technician in the U.S. Air Force he brings his positive personality and motivation to his peers and leaders. ent systems and Nyowatchon’s supervisor, describes him as someone who likes to go above and beyond. “He wants to be the one to do everything,” Jennings said “He’s like a ray of sunshine and his trust in god, knowing he’ll never fail him makes him who he is so nothing can defeat him.” Nyowatchon’s faith is something he wants to share with more people. He has aspirations to cross-train and become a Chaplain’s assistant and possibly become an Air Force Chaplain one day. “We are all connected no matter where you come from, no matter your background,” Nyowatchon said. “We are all connected, so you might as well
just make them happy if you can.” He is grateful for all the opportunities given to him and is especially thankful his family will not have to endure the same hardships he did. “I’m very happy for my son,” Nyowatchon said. “He has a U.S. passport, it’s a privilege being a U.S. citizen and having access to things other people don’t have access to. Meet 521st AMOW Commander Col. Bradley L. Spears by Crystal Young 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing welcomed Col. Bradley L. Spears as the wing’s new commander June 28. Spears has dedicated his career to the United States Air Force for 24 years and most recently served as vice commander of the wing. Col. Spears is a command pilot with more than 3,100 flying hours and more than 300 hours in combat. He has flown C-21A, C-130E, MC-130E, and TG-10 aircraft. He has been stationed in Germany three times and visited many of the American cemeteries in France, Belgium and Luxembourg. He said visiting the cemeteries is awe inspiring to consider the sacrifice of those who have gone before and to think about what needs to be done to carry on their legacy. Col. Spears answered the following questions: What advice would you give 1994, 2nd Lieutenant Bradley Spears? It is the same advice I have tried to follow my whole career which is to pursue excellence in every task that you are given, no matter how seemingly unimportant it is at the time. When I threw my hat in the air at the academy in 1994, I had a quote in there from Coach Vince Lombardi that said, “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, no matter their chosen field.” I have tried to keep that in mind my entire career. What stands out from early in your career as a defining moment? Going back 24 years, I think one of the things that stands out is being given the keys to a multimillion dollar jet and given the responsibility to fly senior officers and U.S. government representatives around Europe and Africa on my own without a lot of reach back to a command and control facility. How motivating it was to have the responsibility and the authority and to
be doing that autonomously. If I think about what it means today, it’s a good reminder that our Airmen, when they are given autonomy, are going to deliver excellence for us every single time. What are you looking forward to being the new 521 AMOW commander? There is a very unique opportunity here that we don’t do much in the Air Force, to fly up in the same organization (where) we have been the vice commander for two years and be able to take command. I am excited to be able to continue many of the initiatives we’ve started over the last two years. The ability to focus on Airmen development, getting ready for the next conflict, and garnering the resources we need to make our Airmen successful in making the global mobility mission move. What is the most important leadership quality Airmen in the 521 AMOW should work hard to develop? Resiliency — the ability to bounce back from failure and overcome obstacles in both our personal and professional lives is critical to our success both as an individual and as a team. When we are accentuating the positives we are turning setbacks and challenges into opportunities. I have had a number of commanders, supervisors and peers who have had my interest in mind in developing me along the way. They all pushed me into opportunities that put me outside my comfort zone but afforded me the opportunity to learn a new skill or broaden my perspective. Another key point is to challenge the view of self — we have to be ok with being uncomfortable because if you are comfortable you are probably not growing. How do you feel the breadth of your experience prepared you to take command? The Air Force does a really good job developing leaders. If I look back at all the training and all the experiences I
have been afforded, especially the ones where I have had supervisors or commanders push me forward, that’s kind of given me the foundation for this command. I have tried to take every single opportunity to make myself better, just like I am asking my Airmen to do, so that when this opportunity presented itself that I have that to lean on. Despite all of that, I don’t have all the answers so I will be leaning heavily on the Airmen and the folks in this wing who are the experts to collaborate with me and help us achieve the vision we’ve set for the 521 AMOW. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what two things would you like to have with you and why? One, a satellite phone and two, a calling card or number for the closest Air Mobility Command C2 (command and control) facility because I know with those two things, I will get whatever I need no matter where I am stranded on the globe.

KMC Post Office new website The new KMC Postal Operations SharePoint site is ready for CAC users (Active Duty/Contractor/Civilians) to use for In-Processing, Mail Hold or Forwards, Out-Processing, and Volunteer Opportunities at the Ramstein (North/South) and Kapaun Post Offices. The site can be found through the USAFE SharePoint portal. Questions? Contact the Northside, Southside, or Kapaun Post Office Customer Service sections. Parking discs needed In certain parking lots on Ramstein Air Base, display of a parking disc is required. The maximum allowable time a car may remain in these lots is posted; the driver must set the disc to the arrival time and make it visible. The following are some parking lots where discs are required; MOMS, Ramstein Officers’ Club, the commissary, the library and the community center. Parking without displaying a disc or remaining past the allowed time could result in a citation. Green Dot Training Have you taken your annual Green Dot training? This is a mandated annual training to gain awareness and prevention of interpersonal violence, to include sexual assault, domestic and inter-personal violence, and suicide. You have two choices for your training. If you completed the Green Dot training last year, you only need to take the 2018 GD Refresher training. If you have never taken the training, you need to take the initial training. The VCC now issues passes with a scannable barcode. These passes are valid for one to three days and may be used at any KMC Air Force or KMC Army installation. Any request longer than three days will require customers to receive a long-term pass. Customers should understand with the new process, waiting times may be longer than usual. The VCC changed its operating hours. It opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., seven days a week. After hours, customers may still sign in guests at the west gate. The sponsor must be registered in IACS to sign in visitors. Furthermore, ID card holders who forget their ID may also be searched in IACS and be granted base access. FALLS CHURCH, VA Effective treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder is possible, but many Airmen falsely think seeking medical help for PTSD will hurt their career and will not help them get better. These stigmas and misconceptions create perceived barriers, preventing Airmen from seeking care. Delaying treatment can cause the anxiety and fear following a traumatic event to affect an Airman’s readiness. “If not properly addressed, PTSD decreases Airmen’s quality of life,” said Capt. Jordan Fields, an Air Force clinical psychologist at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. “They can be less engaged, isolate themselves, and become more irritable and angry. It tends to have a negative impact on relationships, job performance, and mission readiness.” Lt. Col. Joel Foster, the Air Force Mental Health Policy chief, says that many times Airmen delay seeking treatment for mental health problems because they have heard supposed stories of Airmen losing their jobs after going to the mental health clinic. Air Force mental health experts say these stories are largely myths, and that the vast majority of visits to the mental health clinic result in Airmen getting better. “You can have one person in an entire squadron be discharged for mental health and word of that rare case spreads,” said Foster. “As a result, the rest of the squadron will have that fear despite the overwhelming fact that there is a relatively low risk that their PTSD diagnosis will negatively impact their career.” As Foster explains, cases of Airmen losing careers from a PTSD diagnosis are extremely rare because current treatments have improved and access to mental health care has increased. Some Airmen may put off seeking PTSD treatment because they do not know what the therapy entails. “People are hesitant to try something when they do not know what to expect,” said Foster. “Many associate mental health with things they have seen on television, which is not always a positive image.” Foster explained that negative media portrayals of mental health creates an image that PTSD is a chronic, lifelong disease that is difficult to treat. According to retired Lt. Col. Alan Peterson, consor-
tium director, South Texas Research Organizational Network Guiding Studies on Trauma and Resilience in San Antonio, Texas, this is not the case. “This could not be further from the truth,” said Peterson. “For active duty military who seek PTSD care, there is a very good chance that they can be treated within 10 sessions and be fully fit to support the mission.” According to Foster, mental health providers depend on a set of standard treatment practices, built on years of research, proven to be effective, and vary little from therapist to therapist. Protocol-based therapies have clear objectives in place for each session. Prolonged exposure and cognitive behavior therapy are two of the most common therapies. “For example, with prolonged exposure, we will safely work with the patient to slowly discuss those feelings and emotions surrounding the traumatic event until the fear and anxiety subsides,” said Foster. “Sessions are recorded for patients to review on their own. Often, they are given homework to help continue the therapeutic practices at home.” PTSD treatments are highly eff ective. Foster cited research that shows more
than 80 percent of patients respond favorably to protocol-based treatments. “I have treated many PTSD patients who respond extremely well to protocol-based treatment,” said Foster. “After treatment many of them no longer meet the criteria to be diagnosed with PTSD. It is a total loss of diagnosis. This is great for the active duty population because it allows them to do their job.” As Fields explains, treatment can be difficult, but worth it. Most patients are able to return to their jobs and lives, and function at a high level. “We are still learning more about PTSD itself, but it is important to know that it is very treatable,” said Fields. “Every Airman needs to know that.” Researchers continue to look at ways to improve PTSD treatment so that Airmen can get even better results.
Peterson established a group of 150 investigators to focus on developing and evaluating protocol-based treatments for PTSD in active duty military. “One study, called Project Remission, involves a three-week, full-time intensive treatment for PTSD,” said Peterson. “The goal is to provide the most intensive treatment that has ever been developed where patients can return to duty after three weeks of treatment.” Project Remission accepts referrals for active duty military to participate in this intensive treatment program through Brook Army Medical Center and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. but we have more room per square foot for customers and also more space for personnel.” In addition to the reorganization of the layout, the 569th USFPS also added a play area for small children and installed two TVs-one to play movies while patrons wait, and the other as a queue so customers remember their place in line. “Since the changes, the wait time for customers has definitely decreased a lot,” Dail said. “Previously, customers were waiting anywhere between two and three hours to be seen, and now it’s usually no longer than an hour.” Dail continued saying another portion of the optimization resided in the roll out of a new appointment scheduler. “The average time for an appointment is about 15 minutes,” said Dail. “Attendees are allotted 30-minute time slots, but we’ve been getting them in and out within 15 minutes on average.” Patrons can schedule appointments through the appointment scheduling program link on the ramstein.af.mil webpage or also through the Kapaun Vehicle Registration Office’s Facebook page by selecting the book now option.

Apart from meeting the religious needs of the community, Air Force chaplains also provide private counseling services, sponsor resiliency events for Airmen and their families, and conduct unit visitations. These ministries play an essential and crucial role in Airmen’s morale and readiness, said Capt. Ioan Dumitrascu, 86th Airlift Wing chaplain. “My favorite part about being a chaplain is being able to serve others,” he said. “Part of our mission is to connect with people at the human level; to help them with their struggles, to propel them over life obstacles and to journey alongside Airmen when adversity strikes. Dumitrascu, who is an Orthodox Christian priest, added that chaplains help service members of all faiths—or no faith at all. The chapel’s services are available to everyone, he said. “We’re here for them,” Dumitrascu said. “We can connect with them on a personal level and use universal valid principles to help them. I’m a priest for my community, but a chaplain to all.” The 86 AW Chapel offers a variety of religious services for Airmen and their families. These include but are not limited to Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Buddhist, and Islamic.
Dumitrascu warned against stifling one’s issues, using various analogies to describe the impact of people letting their problems accumulate or going unsolved. “Imagine a balloon that is overinflated,” he said. “Similarly, if we become overstretched by our burdens, what will happen to us? We will break. People who neglect to get help in time expose themselves to this risk. Both work and family life are affected.” Chaplains do not work alone in their mission to help to fight for resiliency and morale. They have enlisted partners, called religious affairs specialists, who help them with their tasks. Together, the two are called Religious Support Teams. “We help the chaplains out with their programs, whether it’s marriage retreats, religious services, or bulletins,” said Staff Sgt. Jacob Johnson, 86 AW religious affairs specialist. “Not only do we make sure the events go smoothly, but we also engage with Airmen at those events.” Johnson said religious affairs specialists can serve as a bridge between their fellow enlisted Airmen and the chaplains, and also provide crisis intervention counseling as well. Both chaplains and religious affairs
specialists are bound by 100 percent confidentiality, meaning they are prohibited from sharing what their clients discuss with them. Johnson described this policy of confidentiality as an advantage, which benefits the individual seeking help. “If you came with an issue on your plate or needed to talk to somebody, I’m able to give you that 100 percent privileged communication,” he said. “It’s not going anywhere, and I’m not telling anybody. I love helping people. When someone comes in with an issue and they leave feeling refreshed and able to return to their work or family, I like being able to do that for people.” Johnson added that while the chapel consists of a diverse workforce of people coming from a variety of beliefs, everyone works together to accomplish the same mission of supporting the needs of the community. “I love the fact that we are able to work with a team of people that are so diverse,” he said. “Everyone is so kind and honest. Conference Services Inc. for the fourth annual Tech Expo, July 19, at the Kaiserslautern Community Activity Center on Daenner Kaserne. The expo will include over 20 different vendors showcasing products ranging from cyber security to mission

this year’s expo, said the event is a chance for military members to get informed and network with industry experts to discuss missioncentric technologies and capability gaps. “The expo is beneficial for leadership, Soldiers, civilian and end users alike — everyone who uses technology — to learn to maximize the efficiency of their current systems, see on-site solutions to mission-critical challenges and discover future innovations for the tactical warfighter,” Davis explained. The expo will have the latest in communication solutions, enterprise mobility, secure data storage and much more, he said. All service members, family members, civilians and contractors are welcome to attend the free event. In addition to the product demonstrations, it will include a light breakfast, lunch, ref reshments and giveaways. Senior leaders will be offered private tours before and after the event with one-minute hands-on demonstrations of various exhibitors’ technologies. Davis said that this year’s expo is taking place on Daenner Kaserne to enable more participation from the east end of the Kaiserslautern Militar y Community. The change in location will allow people from installations such as Panzer and Sembach kasernes, who have not easily been able to participate in past years, more of an opportunity to attend, he explained. Although the event is free, advance registration is recommended and may be completed online at www. federalevents.com/rheinland. Online registration will allow for quick entry on the day of the event. A full list of exhibitors may be found at this site as well. “I’d like to encourage everybody to come,” Davis said. “This only happens once a year, and it’s something we’re very proud of.”

Ingredients (for 4 people) 4 cups fresh mushrooms sliced into quarters and washed 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup diced ham 1.5 pounds spaetzle ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon nutmeg ¼ teaspoon white pepper 1 tablespoon chopped parsley 1 cup grated Gouda
Allow butter to melt in pan. Don’t let it get past warm. Add mushrooms, diced ham, and spaetzle. Heat all for 5-7 minutes, on medium heat, stirring occasionally. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Add grated Gouda and chopped parsley. Divide equally into four bowls and you have a nice comfort food dinner. If desired, you can top with nicely browned onions. A nice summer salad of tomato, cucumber and lettuce will compliment this meal well.

by Thomas Warner contributing writer Kaiserslautern baseball was in a familiar place at the end of the baseball season — playing for a championship. The Raiders have played in two of the past three finals but met a familiar fate again when Lakenheath edged them in extra innings. Kaiserslautern was tied with the Lancers at 5-5 after five innings but saw a few balls bounce just before or just beyond the foul line, each time going against their efforts to win a baseball title for the school. Lots of talent will return for the 2018-19 school year and head coach Justin Bates said it might be in the cards
for another deep Europeans tournament run. “Looking back on the season, losing the championship game still stinks,” Bates said after seeing his team wind up with a 17-7 record. “We are proud of what we accomplished and are happy for Lakenheath, but that was definitely a tough loss. Our boys came a long way.” The Lancers had posted a 6-4 win over Kaiserslautern on the opening day of Euros but the Raiders rebounded with victories over Vicenza, Stuttgart, plus a stressful 8-7 win over Wiesbaden, to make it to the finals. Kaiserslautern was also in the finals two seasons ago and facing Ramstein, when a rainstorm caused an extended

delay and ultimately led to a cancellation of the finish of the finals game, with the Royals in the lead. This season, the Raiders left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth as the score remained tied, then saw Lakenheath break things open with four runs in the sixth frame. “We also got baserunners again in the bottom of the sixth and our kids just never quit on us,” Bates said. “The fans and the school can be extremely proud of the efforts of this Raider team. Lakenheath was a great opponent and the fans for both teams created a great atmosphere as the Europeans tournament went along. Congratulations to them on their title.” Ronin Sherman had three hits and two runs batted in for KHS in the championship game. Mattias Perrin, Taylor Moore and Kaden Senkbeil each had two hits while George Stephan drew two walks and scored two runs. On the pitching mound, the Raiders used Senkbeil, Justice Harper and Ronin Sherman at different parts of the contest. Kaiserslautern graduates Euros allstar selection Nolan Sherman, who batted .450 with eight doubles and three triples for the season. Sherman had 28 runs batted in and scored 30 runs himself but he was just as consistent on the mound, with 66 strikeouts in 44 innings of work. Sherman walked just nine batters all

year and was among the leaders from all DODEA schools with his 2.68 earned run average. Kenyon Jiles also departs after batting .333 and fellow 2018 senior reserve Alexander Wells was in his first year on the roster but nonetheless contributed with leadership for an extremely young Raider squad. “Many of our players lacked experience at the start of season and I’m not sure if they fully understood what it took, mentally, to be successful in baseball,” said Bates. “By the end of the season they had a better respect and appreciation for the game and had a more mature point of view. This will be a tremendous building block as we approach next season with so many returning contributors.” Sherman’s younger brother Ronin was also an all-European selection, batting .475 as a freshman with a 5-2 mound record and 42 strikeouts. Ronin Sherman and fellow freshman Moore combined to produce nearly 30 RBI and score over 50 Raider runs. Perrin (.434) and Jace Robinson (.340) were influential sophomores who notched 45 RBI between them while junior pitcher/infielder Harper batted .340 with 16 runs batted in. Minus the seniors, nearly the entire 2018 roster is expected to be back for next spring’s diamond season. Bates said that while he and assistant coaches Zac Robinson and Alexis Sherman were proud of the players,

they were just as happy for the KHS fans. “They stuck with us through a couple of rough defeats and close ones … they gave us a reason to keep our heads up and keep moving on to that next game,” Bates said. “They never stopped believing in us and I think it helped the players build all the confidence that carried us to the finals.”

It is a good idea to have the value of the house appraised. The purchase price will be divided by 10 and 1/10th of it paid a year, up to the maximum amount of your LQA for your grade and number of dependents. The POQ payments will stop after 10 years. If your home is not completely paid off by then, you may have to refinance or move out and rent out the home to help pay off your mortgage.
A final cautionary note: while it is fairly easy for an American to buy real estate in Germany, it is not always so easy for an American to sell real estate to a German buyer. This is particularly true in communities affected by the military drawdown like Darmstadt, but it can also happen in “end state” communities like Kaiserslautern. If a German buyer knows the American seller must return to the United States, it makes it less likely the seller will
receive fair market value for the property (assuming a buyer can even be found.) So think twice before plunging into the purchase of real estate, and consult with a German attorney before investing. Description/Job Summary: This person provides a comforting “Home Away from Home” to wounded, ill, and injured service members residing at the Medical Transient Detachment at LRMC. Position is full-time, 32 hrs/week. Qualified candidates must have a passion for serving our troops.
