Spartan Lightning: Perfecting F-35 interoperability at RAB

Service members from the U.S., Royal Norwegian and the Royal Netherlands Air Force showcased readiness, interoperability and maintenance proficiency during Spartan Lightning at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 6-7.

A total of seven F-35A Lightning II aircraft participated in the exercise, with pilots and

maintainers represented from U.S., Norwegian, and Dutch air forces. In addition to hands-on training, simulated combat scenarios were offered to the F-35 pilots to achieve learning objectives pertaining to offensive and defensive counter air missions.

“This Spartan Lightning iteration was the first of its kind because we flew in seven F-35s to Ramstein for the pilots to participate in the simulator training and for the maintenance personnel to participate in cross-servicing of

World War II veteran co-founds Nurse Practitioner Program

A nationwide shortage of physicians in rural areas spurred a World War II nurse to work with a pediatrician and create the nurse practitioner program in 1965.

Loretta Ford, a native of the Bronx, New York City, earned her nursing diploma in 1941 and was working at Middlesex General Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, when her fiancé was killed during World War II. His death inspired Ford to serve as a nurse in the Army Air Forces, which later became the Air Force in 1947 after it split from the Army.

During the war, she served at military base hospitals in Maine and Florida. Following the war, Ford used her G.I. Bill to attend the University of Colorado, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1949.

Throughout the 1950s, Ford was a public health nurse for Boulder

County, Colorado. It was a rural area with a lack of medical care availability, so she and other nurses set up temporary health clinics. Those experiences influenced her thinking that nurses could fill in for medical doctors if given some extra training. In 1965, Ford worked with pediatrician Henry Silver to create the first nurse practitioner program in the United States at the University of Colorado. She earned a doctorate in education from the same university in 1961.

Ford, born Loretta Pfingstel Dec. 28, 1920, married William Ford in 1947. They had a daughter, Valerie Monrad, who now lives in Inverness, Florida.

At age 100, Ford received the Surgeon General’s Medallion — the highest civilian honor given by the Public Health Service. She was also inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame at age 91.

Ford died Jan. 22, 2025, at her home in Wildwood, Florida, at age 104.

In 1971, Elliot Richardson, the secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, made a formal recommendation for expanding the scope of nursing practice so that nurses could serve as primary care providers. HEW later became known as the Department of Health and Human Services.

That recommendation has been enacted in most states, where nurse practitioners, acting as primary care providers, can perform many of the same tasks as medical doctors, including performing diagnostic procedures and evaluations, ordering lab work or blood tests and prescribing medications and treatment plans.

Nurse practitioners have since risen to many high-level positions. Susan Orsega, a nurse practitioner and a rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, served as the acting U.S. surgeon general, Jan. 20, 2021, to March 24, 2021.

Spartan Lightning has been primarily a simulated training event until this year with the fly in as a new concept to the exercise. Having F-35s physically present allowed for integrated maintenance and communication between NATO Allies and partners to play out in real time.

“We wanted to focus on learning the differences and similarities between how each of our NATO Allies and partners accomplishes aircraft maintenance, with the ultimate goal being to support Agile Combat Employment objectives,” said Master Sgt. Chris Bryant, 495th Fighter Generation Squadron avionics section chief

from RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom. “This way we can have any of our allies and partners send their fighter aircraft and pilots to locations around the NATO theater and have the confidence that everyone is on the same page and the mission can continue to run smoothly.”

Exercises like Spartan Lightning create the space for countries with F-35s to work handin-hand to solve tactical problems, create connections between countries to solve future problems, and learn emerging baseline tactics to bring back to their countries so if F-35s are employed, they will seamlessly work together.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s ICE program: Using community feedback to improve services, operations, QOL

Story and graphic by Linda

U.S. Army Garrison

Rheinland-Pfalz’s Interactive Customer Evaluation program allows customers to provide direct feedback about their experiences with garrison services, helping leaders improve the overall quality of services the garrison provides.

“We don’t know how we’re doing unless the customers tell us,” said Alexandra Casey, a management and program analyst with USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Directorate of Plans, Analysis, & Integration Office. “If there is an issue and we don’t know about it, we can’t make the necessary changes to fix it.”

Managers, supervisors and other leaders regularly review ICE comments to identify team successes and areas where their services need improvement.

Casey said customers can submit ICE comments through the standard Department of Defense ICE website, https://ice.disa. mil, or by scanning the quick response code seen at the front desks or waiting areas throughout the garrison, using a smart-

phone camera. The website is available on personal devices and does not require a virtual private network nor any DoD or government technology to access.

“The website breaks out ICE services by location,” Casey said.

“Make sure to type in the location, then type the service name — for example ‘postal service’ or ‘housing.’”

When making an online ICE comment, customers simply pro-

vide feedback by answering a few questions describing their overall satisfaction of the services received, with space to leave specific comments and notes for improvements.

While comments may be submitted anonymously, customers are encouraged to remain professional in their remarks and provide an email address or phone number so service providers can follow-up.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch reminds the community that ICE comments serve a dual purpose.

“While ICE is an opportunity for the community to provide honest feedback for improving garrison services, it’s also a chance for customers to leave a “N-ICE” comment, recognizing employees who deliver exceptional customer service,” he

said. “Garrison leadership closely reviews all comments and feedback — don’t forget, you can use ICE to acknowledge great service too.”

According to PAIO Chief Charles Azotea, ICE comments have led to noticeable and tangible improvements.

“The garrison has significantly improved customer satisfaction, maintaining a 91 percent or higher average since July 2024, exceeding the 90% standard,” he said. “This is reflected in increased positive customer comments, highlighting excellent or improved customer service.”

DoD launched the ICE program in 2009. USAG RP is committed to using ICE comments to provide the best possible support to the community.

Feel like making a n-ICE comment now? You can go to the garrison website, https://home. army.mil/rheinland-pfalz/, scroll down and click on the ICE link. Community is USAG RheinlandPfalz’s number one priority.

Let us make sure we have everything! We have our toothbrush and our toothpaste! We are ready to brush our teeth!

Don’t’ forget to brush up, down, left, and right! Remember to reach your teeth way in the back too!

U.S. Soldiers explore Romanian culture, history during ‘Principalities Union Day’ museum visit

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA — Soldiers from the U.S. Army Garrison Black Sea and the 1st Cavalry Division stepped into the heart of Romanian history during a visit to the National History Museum in Bucharest on Friday, Jan. 24. The trip coincided with the celebration of Romania’s Principalities Union Day, providing a unique opportunity to honor the history and culture while strengthening the partnership between the United States and Romania.

Principalities Union Day, celebrated each year on Jan. 24, marks the unification of the Romanian principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859 under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza.

This milestone is viewed as the first step toward the establishment of a unitary Romanian state, making it a cornerstone of the country’s national identity.

The museum staff greeted the soldiers warmly, offering a guided tour in English to highlight key historical moments, artifacts, and the significance of the Principalities Union.

Exhibits ranged from ancient Roman relics to artifacts from the unification era, immersing the soldiers in Romania’s cultural heritage.

“This tremendous opportunity to join with USAG Black Sea and tour the National History Museum in Bucharest not only enhanced our knowledge and understanding of Romania, but also increased our appreciation for Romania’s rich culture and steadfast resilience throughout the centuries. This experience will not soon be forgotten.” said Lt. Col. Kyle Kivioja, 1st Cavalry Division, Division

Tactical Command Post Chief of Staff.

As they moved through the museum, soldiers engaged with the guides, asking questions about Romania’s journey to unification and its evolution into a modern state.

The interactive tour fostered a meaningful exchange of knowledge and camaraderie.

“It’s important to learn about history with our allies because history is bound to repeat itself,” said Sgt. Raekwon Coney, Division Tactical Command Post, Operations NCO, 1st Cavalry Division.

The visit underscored the garrison’s commitment to fostering strong relationships with host nation communities.

Lt. Col. Christopher Kuszniaj, U.S. Army Garrison Black Sea commander, highlighted the importance of these cultural exchanges.

“Learning about Romanian history and culture helps us better understand and appreciate our close allies,” said Kuzsniaj. “The more we engage with our Romanian partners, the stronger our partnership becomes. These opportunities allow us to work together more effectively and deepen the bonds that make our alliance so resilient.”

For the soldiers, the visit was more than just a history lesson; it was a chance to connect with the host nation and gain a greater appreciation for the culture of their Romanian counterparts.

“I feel as though we should learn our partner’s history and culture to understand what is important to them and to ensure we don’t repeat the past,” said Spc. Elyot Ohme, automation technician, 1st Cavalry Division.

Through initiatives like this, USAG Black Sea continues to build bridges with its host nation, fostering mutual respect and understanding that enhance mission success and bolster the U.S.-Romanian partnership.

86th Operations Group celebrates 83 years

The 86th Operations Group celebrated their 83rd birthday on February 10. Activated in 1942, the group began as a bombardment group in World War II, flying the A-20 Havoc (light bomber, attack aircraft, night fighter) and the A-36 Mustang (ground attack/dive bomber aircraft), then transitioned to a fighterbomber group and added the P-40 Warhawk and P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft. The group participated in combat operations in North Africa and Italy and supported the Allied landings at Salerno, and later, southern France. The unit earned a Distinguished Unit Citation (DUC) for its action against the enemy in Italy, May 1944, and another DUC

for actions against enemy transportation targets in April 1945. By V-E Day (May 8, 1945), the 86 OG had flown 3,645 combat missions in Africa and Europe. After World War II, the 86 OG took part in sending experienced pilots to Japan, to train forces fighting in the Korean War, and later participated in Operation HOMECOMING, the repatriation of POWs from Vietnam back to the United States. As the 86 OG transitioned in the early 1990s from tactical air defense and deterrence for Europe to airlift, the group wholly embraced the humanitarian operations era. Airlift, air drop, and aeromedical evacuation have continued to be the mainstay of the 86 OG for over thirty years.

During WWII, four chaplains gave their lives in act of selfless service

During the height of World War II, more than 900 service members, civilians and crew aboard the U.S. Army Transport Dorchester sailed through the North Atlantic for Greenland.

When the ship departed St. John’s, Newfoundland, Jan. 29, 1943, everyone on board knew there was a risk of being torpedoed and possibly sunk by the German submarines patrolling the area.

On board the ship were four Army chaplains, all lieutenants, including George L. Fox, a Methodist minister; John P. Washington, a Catholic priest; Clark V. Poling, a Dutch Reformed minister; and Alexander D. Goode, a rabbi.

By the fifth day of the journey, on the evening of Feb. 2, it became apparent to the ship’s captain and crew that they were being stalked by a German submarine. The Dorchester’s captain put passengers on alert, warning them to sleep that evening in their clothes and to wear a life jacket.

The four chaplains had been planning an amateur talent show to amuse the men and take their minds off the trip, but with new knowledge of the German sub marine, coupled with bad weather, they scuttled the idea.

With the men unnerved by knowledge of the German sub, the chaplains instead held a party to keep the men occupied.

the German submarine U-233 prepared to attack.

“Despite their differences, the four chaplains were united in their desire to provide comfort, care and calm

Following the conclusion of that event, some of the chaplains visited with the men, and one even held Mass.

Army Maj. Gen. Bill Green Jr.

Shortly after midnight, on the morning of Feb. 3, the crew and passengers began to think their concerns about the submarine had been unwarranted. But that was premature. The crew aboard

Just before 1 a.m., a German torpedo struck the Dorchester. Dozens were killed instantly, and the ship descended into chaos. Men rushed to the top deck to escape by lifeboat, but found many were unable to be used, either due to icing, or due to the extreme tilt of the ship — the result of taking on water from the torpedo. Some men simply jumped overboard to avoid going down with the ship.

As the ship sank into the water, the four chaplains did their best to attend to the needs of frightened servicemen by calming them, tending to spiritual needs,

helping the wounded and guiding them to safety.

Goode, for instance, gave his own gloves to another serviceman, telling the man he had an extra pair when he did not. The chaplains together also assisted in handing out life vests. When the supply was finally exhausted, they took off their own vests and gave those to the men who were still without.

All four chaplains eventually succumbed to the icy waters of the Atlantic. Of the more than 900 men on board the ship, 672 died.

All four chaplains have since been awarded Purple Hearts and Distinguished Service Crosses for their actions that day. Congress additionally created a “Four Chaplains’ Medal,” which was presented to their survivors in 1961.

Army Maj. Gen. Bill Green Jr., who serves today as the Army chief of chaplains, said while the four chaplains differed in their faiths, they were the same in their dedication to service.

“Despite their differences, the four chaplains were united in

their desire to provide comfort, care and calm to their shipmates as everyone abandoned the ship,” Green said. “They made the ultimate sacrifice when the supply of life jackets was exhausted, and they all removed their own to give them to others.”

Chaplains, Green said, have been in every conflict the United States military has been involved in to provide for the spiritual needs of warfighters as they defend the U.S. and its interests.

“Chaplains have been a strong, steady and courageous presence in every major conflict beginning with the Revolutionary War, and today we continue building spiritual readiness so that our soldiers can endure in any future fight,” Green said in a message to Army chaplains worldwide, asking them to remember the importance of their mission.

The Four Chaplains Day observance, Feb. 3, marks 82 years since Fox, Washington, Poling and Goode selflessly sacrificed themselves to save the lives of the servicemen they traveled with.

Army Chaplains (1st Lts.) John P. Washington, a Catholic priest; Clark V. Poling, a Dutch Reformed minister; George L. Fox, a Methodist minister; and Alexander D. Goode, a rabbi, were all on board the ship U.S. Army Transport Dorchester, Feb. 3, 1943, when it was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank. All four died in the attack.

Groundhog Day: Civil War regiment’s knack for ‘digging in’ still relevant

When America’s favorite groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, emerged from his cozy burrow at Gobbler’s Knob, Feb. 2, he saw his shadow, and according to legend, that means we’re in for six more weeks of winter.

Many Americans associate Groundhog Day with the clairvoyant rodent — or the 1993 comedy film that pokes fun at the festival — but a century ago, an extraordinary group of Ohioans may have celebrated the holiday differently. Far removed from the spectacle in Pennsylvania, their groundhog story began on the Civil War’s hallowed battlefields.

In 1862, the soldiers of the 26th Ohio Volunteer Infantry earned the nickname “the Groundhog Regiment” for their remarkable ability to entrench at a moment’s notice — sometimes digging protective works with nothing but bayonets, spoons or canteen cups.

Like all soldier competencies — from loading and discharging firearms to hand-to-hand combat — digging in was a skill best mastered quickly. The soldiers of the 26th Ohio soon realized that survival depended on earthworks and cover because the Union’s demand for fresh troops offered little time for a thorough education; they would learn as they fought.

The 26th Volunteer Infantry: The Groundhog Regiment

Organized in June 1861 at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio, the regiment included volunteers from counties across the state.

Unlike many of its sister regiments, which filled their ranks with men from the same homogenous communities, the 26th Ohio was remarkably diverse. The unit’s soldiers were from all walks of life, separated by class, culture and faith, but honor-bound by a shared desire to preserve the Union.

In an 1861 interview published in the Urbana Citizen and Gazette, Regimental Chaplain Leander Long described what inspired “professed Christians,” agnostic gentlemen and unabashed “sinners” to fight as one. “There seems to be gathered together every kind of man in our regiment, but there is one thing on which they all agree,” he said. “They are determined to maintain and defend the Stars and Stripes.”

Hastily thrust into combat, the regiment tangled with Confederate militia in West Virginia and Kentucky during the Civil War’s early years before participating in major battles in the Western Theater. As the conflict dragged on, the Groundhog Regiment gained a reputation for their commitment to discipline — and their entrenching proficiency.

The unit saw hard fighting in several significant engagements. It took part in the bloodbath at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862 and fought determinedly under Army Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans at the Battle of Stones River later that year before marching with the Army of the Cumberland through Tennessee in July 1863.  By then, many of the Ohioans assigned to the Groundhog Regiment were no longer strangers to the crack of a rebel Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-musket or the sulfuric stench of cannon fire. But even the unit’s

hardened veterans were unprepared for the calamitous fighting that awaited them in Chickamauga.

That fall, with Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg’s forces determined to drive the Cumberland Army out of northern Georgia, the 26th Ohio found itself at the center of one of the war’s bloodiest contests: the Battle of Chickamauga.

On Sept. 19, 1863, the Groundhog Regiment attacked Bragg’s Army of Tennessee at the Viniard Fields — a line of dense vegetation flanking open ground. Fierce close-quarters combat erupted, where the rebels’ accurate rifles proved devastating.

There, the 26th Ohio had little chance to dig in. Unrelenting Confederate assaults forced the regiment into repeated engagements over open ground. Bragg’s Army rained Minié balls on the infantry from their concealed positions in the wood line. In an interview with the Madison County Union, Army Pvt. James Treahorn offered a vivid description of the Groundhogs’ toughest engagement to date.

“Our boys met them steadily; demonian yells filled the air, mingled with the groans of the dying,” he said. “Though [we] were forced back by superior number, [we] rallied and drove [off] the enemy.”

Throughout the Civil War, movement through open terrain invited staggering casualties. Because rifled firearms vastly outperformed older smoothbore muskets, entrenchments or breastworks were essential for survival. During the Battle of Chickamauga, however, the Groundhog Regiment could not count on the very skill that defined its nickname. There was simply no time. In the north Georgia wilderness, the regiment suffered one of the war’s most devastating single-day casualty rates.

“Digging In” on the Modern Battlefield

Today, combat technology continues to evolve, but the usefulness of a welldug defensive position remains. On the Ukrainian front, trenches have reemerged as a brutal fixture of 21st-century warfare.

Like the Civil War soldiers who faced vastly improved rifle fire, troops on both sides of the Ukrainian conflict now contend with modern impediments to maneuver, including drones, loitering munitions and accurate artillery. After nearly two centuries of war, cutting-edge weaponry has rendered the margins slimmer and the risks greater. Remotely operated drones can drop grenades directly into entrenchments. “A combination of concealment from visual detection and thermal imaging is important for surviving in trenches,” said retired Army Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges about surviving today’s evolving battlefield in a 2023 Task and Purpose interview.

During the Battle of Chickamauga, the 26th Ohio infantrymen discovered that speed and valor could not shield them from an enemy concealed in the dense tree line. Their skill at digging in was neutralized by the pace of that chaotic battle. In Ukraine today, loitering munitions and drones fill the role that rifled firearms once did — granting defenders a lethal advantage against an advancing enemy.

From the Minié balls at Chickamauga to the modern perils on the Ukrainian front, whenever technology outpaces maneuver, hastily built defenses can mean the difference between life and death.

The 26th Ohio’s nickname, Groundhog Regiment, once considered whimsical, remains a testament to hard-earned battlefield wisdom. Though their entrenching expertise couldn’t spare them from the bloody chaos at Chickamauga, their story reminds us that — whether in 1863 or 2025 — there’s value in digging in.

Nevada Guard Airlift Wing assists with Operation Deep Freeze

152nd Airlift Wing

CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND - The 152nd Airlift Wing “High Rollers” from the Nevada Air National Guard achieved a historic first by participating in Operation Deep Freeze.

The High Rollers supported the annual U.S. military mission in Antarctica by flying augmented max duty day missions, logging over 30 hours in three days in December. The operation challenges the U.S. military with Antarctica’s extreme and unpredictable environment— the coldest, windiest and most inhospitable continent on Earth.

Rapidly changing weather conditions

immediately confronted the High Rollers, operating out of Christchurch, delaying their inaugural mission until Dec. 18. Despite the setbacks, the team maintained readiness and transported 39 passengers and vital cargo to McMurdo Station in Antarctica aboard their C-130 Hercules aircraft. Their efforts provided significant relief to the 139th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron of the New York Air National Guard, which has handled the bulk of ODF missions for decades.

The 139th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron uses LC-130 aircraft equipped with skis, enabling landings on ice and snow. The unit manages the north-south resupply runs between Christchurch and McMurdo Station and intra-Antarctic missions, including

deliveries to remote research stations and the South Pole. This demanding workload has heavily strained their fleet and personnel.

“We are so happy to see you guys here,” said Senior Master Sgt. Dave Ricks, the 139th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron’s superintendent. “We really appreciate the help that the High Rollers are providing.”

A C-17 unit from Washington state supports north-south missions during the winter months. However, during the summer, warmer temperatures render the runways too slushy for C-17s to land.

The High Rollers’ deployment to Operation Deep Freeze strengthens partnerships within the Air National Guard and reduces the operational burden on indi-

vidual units. Col. Catherine Grush, 152nd Airlift Wing commander, highlighted the collaboration’s importance.

“It is my hope that we can make this an enduring partnership with the New York Air National Guard and the National Science Foundation,” Grush said. “We are excited to help out and provide whatever support is needed from us.”

The High Rollers brought fresh resources and enthusiasm to the mission, marking an important step in building capacity and resilience within the U.S. military’s Antarctic operations. Their success highlights the value of joint efforts in tackling the logistical and environmental challenges of operating at the bottom of the world.

ABC IN KMC: Landstuhl

Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages or towns surrounding Kaiserslautern in the heart of the Palatinate Forest.

Today our tour of the County of Kaiserslautern will lead us to the Union Community of Landstuhl, just south of Ramstein Air Base. A Union Community is an administrative territorial community composed of a group of individual towns or villages.

Communities

The union community is comprised of the individual towns of Bann, Hauptstuhl, Kindsbach, Krickenbach, Linden, Mittelbrunn, Oberarnbach, Queidersbach, Schopp, Stelzenberg and Trippstadt, as well as the City of Landstuhl. During a communal law reform, the union community was combined with former towns belonging to KaiserslauternSüd. It has been in its current form since 2019, with the City of Landstuhl acting as the administrative center.

With a population of 28,000, about an additional 3,700 members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community (U.S. and NATO) reside in the union community.

Celts, a castle and a medical center

Early traces of a settlement date back to about 500 B.C. at the Heidenfels (heathen rock) and is attributed to a Celtic settlement. It is said to have been a holy site until the Roman times in the first century. The king’s court of Nannenstuhl was first mentioned in conjunction with the king’s court of Lutera around the year 850 as part of the Lorscher Imperial Urban (document). Around the year 1160 emperor Friedrich Barbarossa had Castle Nanstein built on a hill in the southern part of the town, first mentioned in a chronicle in 1253. The town “Landstuhl” was first documented as a city in an official certificate in 1326 and since 1995 it has officially held the title “Sickingenstadt Landstuhl,” in honor of the noble Sickingen family.

The Lords of Sickingen acquired responsibility in the late 15th century and their most

famous member, Franz von Sickingen, transformed the castle into a fortress during his reign. While large parts were destroyed, some sections still tower above the city as the most prominent landmark.

Since 1953 Landstuhl has also been home to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest U.S. medical center in Europe with a military housing area on the premises.

Wanderlust and canyon hikes

There is plenty for outdoor fans to do and discover in and around Landstuhl. Various hiking trails lead to and from Castle Nanstein on long or short routes. Discover historical traces at Steinberg or take a relaxing stroll in the wild and romantic Karlstalschlucht near Trippstadt. Mountain bikers have nine trails to choose from and regular cyclists can discover the Palatinate Forest on a variety of trails.

The Cubo is a popular spot for wellness fans and offers a sauna with a spa area. The nature inspired sun and fun outdoor pool is ideal for children and is just adjacent. Nature lovers may also enjoy the Bärenlochweiher, a natural swimming lake in the forest, with a picnic area near Kindsbach.

Various sports clubs and associations offer a multitude of fitness activities for young and old. In addition to popular German soccer, other clubs offer table tennis, fishing or even events for tractor fans and meetings with working dogs.

Arts

and culture

Performing arts events are held at the Stadthalle in Landstuhl with musicals, concerts and plays. The Kulturfabrik in Linden also offers a variety of concerts and the Artothek is renowned for its arts display, where pieces of art can be borrowed similar to a library. Step back into the spectacular Middle Ages at Nanstein Castle at the “Burgspiele” during the summer or visit a humorous play in regional dialect at the “Pfälzer Komödie” in the Stadthalle. Amateur actors perform in plays in November and around Easter at the nature stage in the middle of the forest in Queidersbach on Falkenstein Castle.

Iron processing and a journey through time

The Eisenhütten Museum in Trippstadt provides a glimpse into the world of forest, water and the iron industry closely connected to Trippstadt and neighboring Karlstal’s history of iron

processing. It is situated within the “Schmiede Huber” complex under historic protection and iron processing demonstrations and courses can be booked.

The Sickingenmuseum in the Zehntenscheune offers a tour through the life and times of Franz von Sickingen, the most prominent Landstuhler of all times. It highlights the effects of his political and personal development onto the centuries to follow. There is also a separate department called “The Knight and his Era” with original letters and pictures.

Sustainability at its best

Nature fans may enjoy a visit at “Haus der Nachhaltigkeit” (House of Sustainability) near Johnanniskreuz. It is considered to be the consumer section for the German part of the “Biosphere Reserve Palatinate Forest NorthVosges” and offers varying displays, such as 3D films about landscapes, alternating events and an attractive outside area with local flora and fauna.

Festivals and fun

The Sickingenmarkt takes place in May and the Stadtfest in September, with food and beverage booths and musical stages throughout the city. Each individual community has its

own village fest in the summer months. The Schnappsbrennerfest in Mittelbrunn in July and the Hahnenfest in Bann in June, are well known beyond the region.

Fun Facts:

Since 1953 over 56,00 Americans were born in Landstuhl. Famous Americans born there include musician Rob Thomas, football player Reggie Williams and LeVar Burton, who starred as LCDR Geordi La Forge in “Star Trek – The Next Generation.”

Franz von Sickingen tried to conquer the City of Trier in 1522 during the “Pfaffenkriege” (clerical wars), but wasn’t successful, and shortly after died in Castle Nanstein.

Mammoth trees not only grow in California. You can also spot impressive Wellentonias on the road leading to Zweibrücken (L465) and take a walk under giants.

The main street leading through Landstuhl, commonly referred to as “Kaiserstrasse,” was built by Emperor Napoleon and he personally traveled through the town on his way to or from Paris and Mainz.

Military Spouses working in Germany

Are you a military spouse looking for a job while your partner is stationed here?

Your SOFA status actually counts as a labor permit within the Germany economy, allowing you to pursue employment outside the wire.

However, when doing so, please keep in mind that all income generated within the German economy is not subject to NATO SOFA. In easier terms, your income will be subject to German taxes and social security payments.

You also need a German health insur-

ance, Tricare alone is not sufficient. These rules, in principle, also apply if you are self-employed. For example, if you have a small business selling items like handmade soaps and candles on a somewhat professional level, it must be properly registered with German authorities and will be taxed accordingly. This is obviously just the tip of the iceberg. There are many exceptions, additional regulations, and niche cases for specific professions.

If you would like to learn more reach out to our office and we will guide you to the correct people to talk to. Contact info@ gacokl.de or Tel. 0631 – 363 3010.

WHAT TO SEE IN SPEYER

The Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral): Largest Romanesque Church in the World

You can’t miss the imposing Romanesque Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral), as the town is dominated by its four spires and two domes. Its actual full name is the Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St Stephen (Dom zu Unserer lieben Frau in Speyer). It was founded by Konrad II in 1030 and was rebuilt by Henry IV.

The church is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts many tourists. The crypt is the final resting place of some of Germany’s rulers and bishops. Today it is the largest Romanesque church in the world. There is a huge stone font, with a capacity of 1,560 litres, in the square in front of the cathedral’s main portal. This once symbolized the borderline between the diocese and the city of Speyer.

The Old City Gate

The Old City Gate was part of the city wall and the western gate; the fortifications had 68 wall and gate towers. The top floor was added in the 16th century, while the steep roof and the lantern date back to the beginning of the 18th century.

You can climb the tower for a superb view of the city at your feet, and on your way up it, pause at the second floor where there is a permanent exhibition which traces the history of the fortifications and that of the gate.

The City Hall

The city hall is a late-Baroque building and it has an imposing exterior. The council chamber is in the early Rococo style and is now used for functions such as concerts and weddings.

The Old Fish Market

The fish and wood market was located in the old town where a sculpture of a fish is now.

Speyer’s Museums

Highlights include:

• The Technik Museum Speyer has planes, vintage cars, motorbikes and fire engines and is perfect for those interested in the history of transport. It also includes a submarine as well as a Lufthansa jumbo jet, a Russian Buran orbiter and many other fascinating exhibits.

• The Historical Museum of

the Palatinate is close to the cathedral and is dedicated to the history of Speyer and the surrounding region. It houses five permanent collections that encompass the different periods of Prehistory, Roman Times, the Cathedral Treasury, the Modern Era and the Wine Museum.

Gabriel von Seidl, a celebrated Munich architect, designed the castle-like museum. It opened in 1910, and was renovated

in the late 1980s. Inside this museum is the Young Person’s Museum of Speyer which was the first museum especially for young people in the RhinelandPalatinate region.

• The Carnival Museum is dedicated to the history of the Carnival in Speyer and has exhibits on four floors of the tower and in an annex. The history of the carnival goes back to 1296, so as you can imag-

ine there are some fascinating exhibits.

Sea Life Speyer

If you are into sea creatures, then this is the place to go. You enter an undersea world of colorful fish, sharks, green sea turtles, and much more. There are fresh and salt-water tanks and it is on two floors, so you have many creatures to view and marvel at.

WHAT TO DO IN SPEYER

• Hiking: There are urban hikes in Speyer as well as more traditional hikes in the countryside or forest as well as you can follow in the (presumed) footsteps of Saint James on his journey to the Path of St. James to Santiago de Compostela.

• Cycling: The World Heritage Cycling Route runs through Speyer gives you the opportunity to explore three of Germany’s states. You can also cycle along the banks of the Rhine, or there’s the Palatia Route which takes you thorough wine-producing country and naturally enough there is the oenophile (wine-lovers) route which goes from Speyer to Edesheim.

• Wine tasting: There are several wine bars in Speyer including Weinstube Klosterstübchen, Weinstube Rabennest and Weinstube Schwarzamsel. Of course, if you venture outside the city you will find vineyards where you can sample the wine and traditional food.

EATING IN SPEYER

• There are many restaurants to choose from in Speyer, serving various cuisines. You could try the Goldener Hirsch at Maximilianstrasse 90A for sample the famous local dish, Pfälzer Saumagen (Palatine sow stomach), or try the Pfälzer Teller which is a dish of liver dumpling, grilled leberkäse and sausage. They serve smaller portions for children if you ask, and you can sit outside when the weather is good.

• If you are hankering after Asian food, try the “Le Cyclo” – Traditional Vietnamese Kitchen at Wormser Strasse 23.The food is fresh, tasty and also serves food from other Asian countries; it is not exclusively Vietnamese.

• The Domhof is a hotel with a restaurant and beer garden, and the food is great and the portions huge. They serve a dish of the day which is always great value for money. The Domhof is at Grosse Himmelsgasse 6. There’s a park where children can play on site, while they are waiting for their meals.
