Remodeled USAFE/AFAFRICA Tunner Conference Room highlights Air Force heritage

February 13 marked the grand re-opening of U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa’s Tunner Conference Room, a project three years in the making.

Project lead Mr. Rusty Ely, telecommunications specialist and design lead Ms. Lauren Brouillette, USAFE AFAFRICA Protocol and former USAFE-AFAFRICA archivist, were tasked with the redesign and relaunch of the headquarters building’s most prolific room.

Few individuals contributed more to the operation and organizational development of airlift operations and logistics than Lieutenant General William Henry Tunner. Lt. Gen. Tunner is credited with the education of the military and the public on the importance of military air transportation. Colloquially known as “the father of airlift,” he pioneered his

theories, ideas, and actions during World War II and continued until his retirement in 1960. Tunner graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1928 and chose to go into the Air Corps, where he trained as a pilot.

Through commissioned pieces of Air Force art and poignant photographs, the story of Lt. Gen. Tunner’s career and his impact on airlift and the U.S. Air Force are on display. Before military forces could grasp the strategy of airlift in wartime, Tunner proved the projection of airpower in the China-BurmaIndia theater during WW II and developed search and rescue operations. The airlift over “The Hump” (the Himalayan Mountain chain) kept China fighting against Japan.

Less than a year after the official formation of the U.S. Air Force, the United States took on the operation to feed, supply, and offer hope to Berliners cut off by the Soviets.

Crisis on the slopes: A pararescue mission beyond the uniform

AVIANO AIR BASE, ITALY —

When a U.S. Air Force pararescueman set out on a skiing trip in the Alps, he wasn’t expecting to put his training to the test. But when he came across an injured skier, instinct and experience took over as a routine day on the slopes evolved into a moment of lifesaving action.

On Jan. 17, Senior Airman Sebastian d’Alton assisted in the life saving measures of a skier by applying a tourniquet and packing the skiers wound until a helicopter arrived to airlift the skier to a local hospital.

Despite his extensive medical training, d’Alton had never performed a real-world Alpine rescue before. In fact, he was still a relatively new skier himself, preparing for an upcoming course in Zermatt that focuses on avalanche, ski and crevasse rescue.

“The environment is really challenging, especially as a new skier,” explained d’Alton, a pararescuemen with the 57th Rescue Squadron. But when it came to treating the patient, the training kicked in. “We do a lot of scenarios that prepare us for moments like this, and once I started assessing the injury, it was almost automatic.”

In the world of pararescue, muscle memory plays a critical role. With years of intensive training behind him, he described the process as algorithmic, a step-by-step assessment ensuring nothing was overlooked.

As he approached the scene, he saw a man lying in the snow, clearly in distress. An Italian couple was already by his side, offering what help they could. Sebastian said when he started to assess the

situation, he immediately recognized the severity of the injury, a deep laceration running down the man’s leg.

“I started with a basic sweep, just like in training,” he recalled. “I then checked for any other injuries, controlled the bleeding and stabilized the wound as best as I could with what we had on hand.”

For some, stepping in to assist a stranger might be a difficult choice. But for Sebastian, it was never a question.

“I love people,” he said. “It’s easy for me to connect with others, and I think I get that from my grandfather, who was a doctor. He was very approachable, very thoughtful. Service has always been a big part of my life, from being a lifeguard to now a PJ with the Air Force.”

The Italian couple, who were the first on scene, had been applying pressure to the wound and were doing their best to alert for help. After d’Alton’s initial assessment, he applied a tourniquet and packed the wound to better stop the loss of blood.

With limited medical supplies available, he relied on improvisation. “We didn’t have a full trauma kit, so we used what we had applying pressure, making sure he stayed warm and keeping him as comfortable as possible while we waited for help.”

The injured skier was fortunate that multiple people stopped to help, and according to Sebastian the Italian couple were first to stop and help. “They were there longer than I was, they didn’t have medical training, but they did what they could. That says a lot about human nature, people will help if they can.”

“Communication was another challenge,” states d’Alton. “He was Austrian and the couple there before me were Italian, but we worked together to make sure he understood what was happening and that help was on the way.”

When asked how he prepares himself for high-stress situations, he credited both training and mindset.

“The training we receive does a

great job of pushing you through stressful moments over and over again,” he said. “You start with intense physical training, but by the end, it’s all about technical skill and problem-solving under pressure.”

He shared a simple but powerful strategy for staying calm when facing a stressful moment, “Take a deep breath. If you need another, take another. Then focus on the problem, one thing at a time. It’s easy to panic but breaking it down step-by-step makes all the difference.”

Training, instinct and a willingness to step in played a pivotal role that day on the mountain, proving that a life dedicated to service doesn’t stop when the uniform comes off.

Eventually, ski patrol arrived and he was able to brief them on the skier’s condition before they transported him off the mountain.

“It wasn’t just me, it was a team effort. Those first two people who stopped made a huge difference, and ski patrol got him out of there quickly. It was just about doing what I was trained to do.”

During a recent ski trip in the nearby Alps, d’Alton assisted in life-saving measures of an Austrian skier proving dedication to service doesn’t stop when the uniform comes off.

Tunner led Operation VITTLES, the Berlin Airlift, where he overhauled and streamlined flying and logistical operations to the point of maximum efficiency; an aircraft landed every 45 seconds.

Tunner pivoted from airlifting goods to Berlin to Japan and Korea, where airlift evacuated troops to and from the Korean peninsula and helped stifle North Korea’s communist agenda in the Kimpo Airlift. In a seven-year period, Tunner organized and led three historic airlifts; his efforts directly contributed to the reputation and proof of concept of the importance of airlift in peacetime and wartime.

Later, as commander of USAFE,

Tunner took great strides to improve local community relationships, encouraged collaboration, and executed Operation KINDERLIFT for the children of West Berlin. German children were taken on aircraft for a vacation outside of West Berlin, an escape from the effects of Communism.

Tunner trained his pilots differently; “…not to risk their lives or their ships, but to fly skillfully and safely and deliver those planes in good condition.”

The Tunner Conference Room showcases the wide-spanning history of Lt. Gen. William H. Tunner, and the legacy he created for airlift, a legacy that carries on even today.

“I have been convinced that we can carry anything, anywhere, anytime.”

Accidents happen, and in Germany, they can be expensive. Three essential but affordable insurances can save you and your loved ones from costly harm.

Private Liability Insurance (Private Haftpflicht)

One simple mistake can cost you thousands. If you accidentally injure someone or damage their property, private liability insurance covers the costs. From leaky washing machines to cracked bathroom tiles and scratched flooring, you may find yourself owing your Landlord a decent amount to cover renovation costs. Even if you knock over an expensive item in a store, damage a friend’s belongings, or cause an accident as a pedestrian or cyclist, this insurance pays for claims and legal fees, preventing financial ruin.

Renters Insurance (Hausratversicherung)

Imagine losing everything in a fire, burglary, or water damage. Renters insurance protects your belongings, including furniture, electronics, and clothing. It also covers costs

if your home is uninhabitable due to damage. This small investment ensures you won’t have to replace everything out of pocket. If you currently have a renters insurance policy through your stateside agency, be sure to make them aware that you are currently international, to ensure that the coverage is applicable in Germany.

Pet Liability Insurance (Haustier Haftpflichtversicherung)

If your dog bites someone or damages property, you are legally responsible. Pet liability insurance covers medical expenses, legal fees, and repair costs, protecting you from expensive claims. Some breeds are even required by law to have this coverage, making it essential for pet owners.

Bombers arrive in Europe for BTF 25-2

by U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

U.S. Air Force B-52H

Stratofortress strategic bombers have arrived in Europe as part of a routine Bomber Task ForceEurope deployment, underscoring the U.S.’ shared commitment to regional security and NATO’s collective defense.

Throughout the deployment, the bombers will participate in a series of exercises and training flights alongside Allied air forces, building cohesion and sharpening collective capabilities.

“Bomber Task Force missions reinforce our ability to rapidly project combat power, demonstrating U.S. lethality and readiness in a dynamic security environment,” said Maj. Gen. Joseph Campo, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Director of Operations, Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration. “Training alongside our Allies and partners ensures seamless integration, enhancing our collective deterrence and warfighting capability across Europe and Africa.”

While transiting into Europe, the U.S. aircraft conducted a routine mission with France, Sweden and Finland.

While deployed, the bomber aircraft will continue to integrate with NATO Allies and partners, conducting joint training missions

designed to enhance interoperability and readiness across the theater. This integration highlights the importance of dynamic force employment, which ensures U.S. forces are strategically postured to deter aggression while adapting to the evolving security environment. The missions will also demonstrate the bombers’ ability to operate from multiple forward locations, exemplifying EUCOM’s

approach to agility and dynamic force employment.

“Training with NATO allies strengthens our ability to operate as one team,” said Lt. Col. Joseph Cangealose, commander 69th

Expeditionary Bomb Squadron. “These missions reinforce our partnerships and prepare us to deliver decisive capabilities whenever and wherever they’re needed.”

Unexpected love: A CYS romance started in USAG Rheinland-Pfalz

The sound of Mr. Bobby’s animated Preschool 1 classroom filled the halls of the Landstuhl Child Development Center 1, a familiar soundtrack to Ty and Ally Hunt’s workdays. It was 2018 and both found themselves working as Child and Youth Program Assistants for U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz.

“We started in different classrooms at first,” recalled Ty. “But over time, we worked in the same class with Mr. Bobby.”

The job was challenging yet rewarding but having each other to lean on made it easier. And then, as life often does, it led them in different directions.

In 2019, Ally left Germany, while Ty stayed behind, building his life in Europe. But time and distance didn’t faze their friendship. Eventually, Ty found himself back in the United States, and like a well-read book being reopened after years on the shelf, their story picked up where it left off.

Their friendship slow burned into something deeper. Soon, they weren’t just catching up on life — they were building a future together.

And now, four months into marriage, it still feels like a dream for the recent newlyweds.

Ally smiled. “It all just fell into place, and you know, the rest is history.”

Now, both living in Savannah, Georgia, and working at Hunter Army Airfield, Ally and Ty are embracing their next chapter together. Their life is filled with travel, horror movies, discovering new restaurants and continuing to work for DFMWR Child and Youth Services.

Art was always a passion they shared, dating back to their original CYS days in Germany.

One of their proudest moments was seeing hundreds of CYS employees at Hunter Army Airfield, wearing a fun t-shirt they designed for a professional training day.

“I still can’t believe they picked our design,” said Ally, shaking her head.

“Yeah,” grinned Ty. “It was so surreal.”

But beyond their common hobbies, they say it’s the little things that make their relationship work.

“She puts up with me being extra,” laughed Ty. “And she’s way more organized than I’ll ever be. And she’s kind to everyone.”

Ally blushed. “And Ty? He has the biggest heart. He’s quiet, but he’s always making people laugh. The kids adore him.”

Looking back, neither of them expected their love story to start in a childcare center for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. But life has a funny way of leading you exactly where you’re meant to be.

For those considering a job with Child and Youth Services, Ty offers simple advice:

“Be patient. You’re an advocate for the kids. It’s hard work, but worth it.”

Ally agreed. “Also, it’s important to have a genuine love for children. If you do, it’ll be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.”

Love sometimes begins with a friendship. Sometimes, it finds you in the most unexpected places.

That’s the beauty of the Hunts’ journey. What began as just another job led to the greatest adventure of all.

For CYS job opportunities, interested applicants can attend the Child and Youth Services Job Fair, March 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Landstuhl Youth Center, bldg. 93812 or visit https://www.usajobs.gov/.

LRC Italy tours confectionary art manufacturing giant during leadership development visit

Supporting the Army’s warfighting mission doesn’t normally involve croissants and cakes, but for employees at Logistics Readiness Center Italy it did Feb. 5 when they conducted a leadership development program site visit to the Bauli International Pastry Factory in Verona, Italy.

While there, the team from Bauli showed the visitors from LRC Italy how their products are made from start to finish, to include the production lines and other areas within the confectionary art manufacturing facility. And at the conclusion of the tour, the LRC Italy visitors were provided freshly baked samples straight out of the ovens.

The chief of supply and services at LRC Italy, Michael Sheridan, presented a plaque of appreciation to Bauli President Michele Bauli at the conclusion of the site visit. During his presentation, Sheridan said he recognizes the significance of the pastry company’s long-standing vision and said, for him personally, the company was a part of his family’s daily life for many years.

“Bauli accompanied my daughter to school every day,” Sheridan said. “We would give her a Bauli product for break time snack, and she loved them.”

The family-led pastry manufacturing giant and Italian tradition for over 100 years now has five factories, world-wide. It supplies over 70 countries across five continents with cakes, croissants, pastries and holiday confectionary art products.

Employees from LRC Italy toured the Bauli facility to appreciate the company’s rich history while learning about its current manufacturing techniques, research and development, and quality control procedures.

For LRC Italy, these leadership development visits foster esprit de corps within the team while helping the organization better understand and appreciate Italian host nation culture. And being professional logisticians themselves, visiting billion-dollar manufacturing companies like Bauli also provides them with best practices and ideas to improve their sustainment and logistics support missions.

“I enjoyed visiting the Bauli company because I enjoy learning of new and innovative ways of doing business,” said Giro Luciana, an administrative support assistant at LRC Italy’s Maintenance Division. “I was just amazed by the technology employed in

their production. In addition, I enjoyed learning about the history of this very successful Italian company.”

“Visiting the Bauli factory was a truly insightful experience,” said Ivelisse Rodriguez, the supervisor of the LRC Italy Drivers Testing and Training Station. “I enjoyed learning about the rich history behind the brand and seeing the production process, but the real highlight was sampling their delicious baked goods.”

“At the end, the Bauli team gifted us with some of their classics — chocolate-filled croissants, Easter eggs, colomba [Italian traditional Easter bread] and crackers,” said Elena Esposito, an LRC Italy administrative support assistant in the Plans and Operations Division. “We were extremely thankful for this opportunity.”

“I didn’t like the Bauli trip. I loved the Bauli trip,” added Ricardo Rodriguez, also from plans and operations.

Bauli is an Italian food company of bakery products — such as pandoro, panettone, colomba and croissants — founded in Verona in 1922 by pastry chef Ruggero Bauli. When it comes to special occasion baked products, Bauli is the leading company in the recurrence market world-wide with about a 37 percent share at Christmas and 33 percent at Easter.

LRC Italy is one of eight LRCs under the command and control of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade. LRCs execute installation logistics support and services to include supply, maintenance, and transportation as well as clothing issue facility operations, hazardous material management, personal property and household goods, passenger travel, non-tactical vehicle and garrison equipment management, and property book operations. When it comes to providing day-to-day installation services, LRC Italy directs, manages and coordinates a variety of operations and activities in support of U.S. Army Garrison Italy.

405th AFSB works council deputy chairman retires on Army’s 250th birthday year

GRAFENWÖHR — Considering how important the local national workforce is to the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, it’s no surprise the brigade’s deputy to the commander personally visited and recognized the deputy chairman of the district works council at his retirement, recently.

James “Mac” McGinnis presented the U.S. Army Civilian Service Commendation Medal to Manfred Müller at a works council meeting Jan. 30 in Ansbach. After more than 33 years with the Army, the last 12 as the 405th AFSB’s district works council deputy chairman, Müller officially retired.

“I’m very satisfied with the opportunity I was given to serve as the deputy chairman for the district works council for the past 12 years,” said Müller, who’s assigned to Logistics Readiness Center Bavaria, 405th AFSB, and located in Grafenwöhr.

Before his job with the works council, Müller was a first cook for 11 years in Hohenfels, and a cook in Vilseck for 11 more. The 66-year-old father of two sons and grandfather of two granddaughters, ages 7 and 10, said he’s proud of his 33 years of service with the Army and thinks it’s unique and special to retire on the Army’s 250th birthday celebration year.

“It’s nice for me to retire this year, a very special year for the Army and obviously a very special year for me, as well. Happy birthday, U.S. Army!” Müller said.

Müller, a German host nation employee with the U.S. Army, said he really enjoyed his time with the Army. He said the Army offers many opportunities to excel and grow. For example, besides work-

ing at the works council, he also held the additional duty as the brigade’s representative for persons with disabilities for four years.

“It was an important job, taking care of all their needs and any

issues they had. And serving as the district works council deputy chairman also involved taking care of our people and their concerns,” said Müller.

“I was on speed dial with the

brigade host nation advisor and the brigade deputy commanding officer 24/7,” Müller said, “plus monthly meetings with them and the district works council meetings with all 12 works council representatives once a month.” Müller is assigned to LRC Bavaria, which directs, manages and coordinates a variety of operations and activities in support of U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria. LRC Bavaria is one of eight LRCs under the command and control of the 405th AFSB. 310th Sustainment Command top brass visits 405th AFSB headquarters

The 405th Army Field Support Brigade hosted Brig. Gen. Todd Erskine at the brigade headquarters Feb. 5 to discuss Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 operations in Europe and the upcoming DEFENDER 25 series of exercises planned for later this year. Erskine is the commanding general of the 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), a U.S. Army Reserve unit headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In October, Erskine visited the 405th AFSB’s Powidz APS-2 worksite in Poland to see how operations there can impact the integration of sustainment units into theater during contingency operations or exercises, like DEFENDER.

Strength in readiness: USAG RP enhances security through force protection exercise

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz successfully tested its readiness through a force protection exercise across its installations in Kaiserslautern, Baumholder, Mannheim, Germersheim and surrounding areas February 3-7. Actions taken during the exercise strengthened security measures and prepared Garrison personnel to respond to potential threats.

During the exercise, the Force Protection Condition was elevated, triggering procedural changes such as vehicle inspections, troop diversions and increased access control measures. Community Reaction Forces and additional military police patrols were activated and strategically deployed to installations facing the highest risks under the exercise scenario. FPCON is how the Department of Defense directs the military to take preventive actions and respond to potential threats against people and installations. Learn more about FPCON at: https://www.army.mil/article/231460

“Protecting the Force and community is the most critical responsibility that we have in the Garrison,” said Col. Jeffery Higgins, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz

commander. “The only way to properly prepare is to train, making these rehearsals vital to

our readiness.”

Maj. Gen. Ronald Ragin, commanding general of the 21st

Theater Sustainment Command and the senior responsible officer for the Kaiserslautern Military Community, commended the Garrison for its effective execution of the exercise during a briefing at the Garrison’s Emergency Operations Center.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz conducts internally planned and evaluated annual integrated protection exercises to enhance operational readiness and safeguard personnel and resources.

Throughout the exercise, garrison employees and community members were kept informed through the ALERT! Mass Warning Notification System. This system serves as a vital communication line for rapid alerts and instructions during emergency situations or events that affect the life, health and safety of the total force community.

All U.S. Army personnel stationed in Europe are required to register with the ALERT! Mass Warning Notification System, and family members are strongly encouraged to do the same. To register, visit the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz website, https:// home.army.mil/rheinlandpfalz/.

On Jan. 31, I attended the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Fine Arts Gala at the Rheinlander Community Club on Smith Barracks in Baumholder, which celebrated the creative talents of military children in the Baumholder Military Community through a collaboration with the Baumholder Youth Center.

The exhibition featured artwork from young artists ages six to 18, including ink illustrations, portraits, photography, acrylic paintings, poetry and textiles. The energy and creativity in the room were electric, and it was clear that the youth in the community have a

strong passion for artistic expression.

Brianna Whitmire, a 16-yearold student and emerging artist, displayed striking portraits that captured my attention. Her piece “Heatwave” used bold, intense colors to tell a story, revealing the artist’s confidence and maturity.

Equally captivating was “A Duck’s Life” by Alyssa Meas, a serene lakeside scene that displayed light and nature’s beauty. Her attention to detail, especially in capturing the glow of sunlight through a bird’s wings, was breathtaking.

Events like this are critical in supporting creativity and community among military families. It was refreshing to see so many families encourage their children to embrace unique visions through the form of art. The talents on display were unforgettable, and I’m looking forward to seeing what these artists create next.

Where will I head next? Stay tuned for the next “On the go with Gabrielle” adventure!

USAG RP BMC youth score big with assist from Hank Aaron Foundation

The Hank Aaron ‘Chasing the Dream’ Foundation awarded financial scholarships to two members of the Boys & Girls Club of America at the Baumholder Youth Program, Child and Youth Services, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz.

The foundation offers annual scholarships to support the achievements of youth, enabling them to develop their talents and pursue their dreams in categories of sports, fine arts, performing arts, or Science Technology Engineering and Math.

This year’s recipients — Leo K. and Jaylon B. — received grants slightly over $2,500 each. Both are multi-sport student athletes in the Baumholder community involved in football, basketball, and track according to Ryan Flynn, Youth Programs director at Baumholder CYS.

“I’m thrilled to see Leo and Jaylon receive these awards,” he said. “Both students demonstrate tremendous talent and dedi -

cation to their education and future in sports. They will use the funds to further develop their basketball skills over the summer, building on their already

impressive accomplishments and taking their game to the next level.”

“Receiving this scholarship is an incredible honor, and I can-

not express how much it means to me,” said Jaylon. “Basketball has always been my passion, and this support fuels my determination to work even harder, chase

my dreams, and make the most of this opportunity.”

“The Hank Aaron scholarship is helping me reach my dreams of basketball stardom,” said Leo. “It means the world to me.”

Flynn said the scholarship funds they received can be used for equipment, supplies, camps, travel or other expenses related to improving proficiency in a specified category, for them, basketball.

He said competition for earning the prestigious annual scholarship is fierce, with only 40 recipients from Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide (and overseas) selected as recipients each year. The application package itself is intense and requires essays, community and teacher recommendations, photos and submissions of other student awards and accolades earned.

“This award is fittingly named ‘Chasing the Dream’ because it provides a financial boost that helps youth and families overcome obstacles and make the most of their talents, in support of their goals and, of course, chasing dreams,” Flynn said.

LRC Stuttgart employee helps kick off 250th Army birthday year with major achievement

Self-development, setting goals and achieving personal and professional milestones is highly encouraged in the Army, and at the 405th Army Field Support Brigade celebration is always in order when valued team members work hard and achieve their goals.

Femi Sopein achieved one of his goals Jan. 6 when he walked the stage at Queen Mary University of London in London, England, and received his master’s degree in international relations.

The general supply specialist at the 405th AFSB’s Logistics Readiness Center Stuttgart worked extremely hard pursuing his higher-education goals while simultaneously working full time as a local national employee with the Army. As the Army celebrates its 250th birthday this year, Sopein said achieving this milestone is a great way to kick off the Army’s special birthday year.

Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, the 43-year-old LRC Stuttgart employee who has lived in Germany for the past 17 years was working at a major German luxury automobile manufacturing company before completing his bachelor’s degree and applying to work for the U.S. Army. He said although he does speak German, his English is much better and one of the deciding factors to consider a career with the Army was the language.

He started out at LRC Stuttgart at the transportation motor pool as a dispatcher. After six months he was offered a job at the housing office with U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart, but it wasn’t long, about a year, when Sopein found himself back at LRC Stuttgart – this time working in plans and operations responsible for ordering supplies and equipment for the entire organization.

According to Sopein, there are currently only two government purchase card holders at LRC Stuttgart, and he is one of them. His single purchase card limit is $25,000, bumped up from $10,000 awhile back, but he says on average he’ll spend $3,000-$5,000 a month on office supplies, equipment and life-cycle replacement items – mostly things like printer paper, ink cartridges, and other items LRC Stuttgart employees use every day.

Sopein, who is married 16 years and has three children, said he also handles all the contracts for LRC Stuttgart, and he does some administrative work in the plans and operations directorate when his supervisor requests assistance or his teammates need help.

“I work with a wonderful team and have an amazing supervisor,” said Sopein. “I’m not exaggerating. Everyone is always so supportive, and collectively everyone works so well together. It’s a wonderful place to work. I’m really comfortable here.”

Sopein is proud to work for the Army, he said. As the Army celebrates its 250th birthday this year, he said he’s fortunate to work for such a storied and prominent organization. He’s proud to serve with an organization that cares about its people and provides them with opportunities to set goals, grow and succeed.

“I love it here so much. I love the environment. I love the people I work with. I love our director. I love working for the U.S. Army,” Sopein said. “Happy birthday, U.S. Army!”

LRC Stuttgart is one of eight LRCs under the command and control of the 405th AFSB. LRCs execute installation logistics support and services to include supply, maintenance, and transportation as well as clothing issue facility operations, hazardous material management, personal property and household goods, passenger travel, non-tactical vehicle and garrison equipment management, and property book operations. When it comes to providing day-to-day installation services, LRC Stuttgart directs, manages, and coordinates a variety of operations and activities in support of USAG Stuttgart.

LRC Stuttgart reports to the 405th AFSB, which is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The brigade provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging U.S. Army Materiel Command’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces. For more information on the 405th AFSB, visit the official website at www. afsbeurope.army.mil and the official Facebook site at www. facebook.com/405thAFSB.

352nd SOW, Finnish Utti Jaeger Regiment strengthen NATO’s interoperability in austere weather environments

Finnish Special Operations forces from the Utti Jaeger Regiment and U.S. Air Force 352nd Special Operations Wing participated in a bilateral training, Jan. 28-31, at Utti Jaeger Regiment base, Finland.

The training included airdrop operations in cold weather conditions utilizing the 352nd SOW’s MC-130J Commando II.

“The desired learning objective is familiarization

with an allied force,” said the 352nd SOW exercise mission commander. “With Finland joining NATO, we want them to gain familiarization of aircraft and procedures involving both cargo and personnel airdrops using proper safety procedures.”

This training qualifies forces from the Utti Jaeger Regiment on static line jumps, military freefall — both high-altitude

high-opening and highaltitude low-opening –jumps, allowing Finnish jumpmasters to perform required maneuvers with U.S. personnel and aircraft.

“We’ve worked with the Finnish military before, but this will be the first time with the Utti Jaegers since Finland joined NATO,” said the mission commander. “The 352nd, and U.S. forces are proficient and well-versed in airdrop and

Utti Jaegers are experts in extreme cold weather environments. We can take our combined experience and put them together to get a better product.”

A U.S. Space Force Guardian assigned to the 352nd SOW used the exercise as an opportunity to integrate with SOF operations by providing digital force protection capabilities, allowing U.S. forces to characterize malicious

electromagnetic activities through signature matching and anomaly detection.

“Testing these sensors allows for higher fidelity in characterizing interference used by adversaries,” the Guardian said. “With this exercise we seek to build our knowledge base and better understand processes and procedures to set up a baseline of operations for future deployments of these sensors or others like it.”

Brigade engineer celebrates National Engineers Week, Army’s 250th birthday

The week of February 16-22 is a big week, February is a big month, and 2025 is a big year for 405th Army Field Support Brigade Engineer Kevin Hovis.

Along with the rest of the nation, the brigade facilities engineer is celebrating National Engineers Week during the third week of February, and at the end of the month he’s celebrating his 45th birthday. To top it all off, he joins his fellow Army civilians, Soldiers and families in celebrating the Army’s 250th birthday all this year.

Hovis, who arrived at the 405th AFSB in July of 2023, said his primary job at the brigade is to ensure all the Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 storage, maintenance and support facilities can properly accommodate the thousands of APS-2 vehicles and equipment sets strategically located at multiple worksites across Europe.

“This week is a good example,” said Hovis, who also worked for the Department of the Navy for about 10 years. “One thing this week I’m doing is reviewing the drawings for a new maintenance center we’re hoping to build in Brunssum [Netherlands].”

“I’m also working with the Dutch government, who are offering to build another maintenance facility in Eygelshoven [Netherlands], so it’s been a lot of interfacing with them and U.S. Army Installation Management Command to figure out the best placement and other important details,” he said.

Hovis’ first government job was with the Marine Corps working in a joint program office focused on fielding mine resistant ambush protected vehicles. He said the wonderful thing about working for the Department of Defense and the Army is protecting Soldiers.

“For me, it’s about bringing the Soldiers home to their families, and when I look at my contributions and my job ensuring all these facilities can properly store and maintain these vehicles — the vehicles that enable and protect the warfighters — the way I see it, my job is about helping to protect our warfighters,” Hovis said.

When it comes to the Army’s 250th birthday celebration this year “it blows my mind knowing that the U.S. Army is older than our country, itself,” said Hovis. “I’m a

little bit of a geek being an engineer, but when you look back at all the technology advances over the past 250 years in the Army — not just weapons but also medical, protective armor, vehicles, aircraft, et cetera — it’s incredible. Happy 250th birthday, U.S. Army!”

As far as National Engineers Week goes, Hovis said it’s fabulous to know he can celebrate his birthday and this important week in the same month. National Engineers Week promotes educational and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math.

National Engineers Week is a wonderful opportunity to talk about Army engineering and what engineers do, said Hovis, who grew up just outside of Charlotte, N.C., and holds a professional degree in systems engineering from the University of George Washington, a master’s degree in systems engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School and a bachelor’s degree of science in industrial engineering from Clemson University.

When working for the Marine Corps, Hovis said he would meet with students at a local middle school during STEM Week. There he would talk to the students about what engineers do, why education is important, and how understanding things like threedimensional calculus and the highest levels of math and physics are critical to the construction of bridges, buildings, and other facilities and structures.

National Engineers Week is well worth emphasizing, Hovis added. Highlighting the achievements of Army engineers, engaging with educational and community groups, and participating in various STEM outreach programs and events is extremely important.

The role of Fluoride in tooth decay prevention

1. What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral found in many foods and water.

When applied to surfaces of the teeth, it strengthens teeth and reduces risk of forming decays.

2. How does Fluoride work?

Sugary foods with bacteria attack the enamel (the outer layer of teeth), which degrade minerals and structure in the enamel, as well as the inner layers of the tooth as it progresses beyond the enamel.

This degradation of teeth structures can be slowed by consuming minerals such as fluoride, calcium, and phosphate in one’s diet.

Fluoride makes enamel more tough to acid attacks, and slows down the process of tooth demineralization.

Fluoride has also been found to reverse early tooth decay.

3. Where can I get Fluoride?

a. Fluoridated water

Fluoride naturally exists in water sources like lakes, rivers, and oceans.

The U.S. discovered the benefits of fluoride in tooth decay prevention in the 1940s. Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first city in the world to add fluoride to its tap water system in 1945. Today, most states have fluoride in their tap water.

b. Food

Fluoride can also be found in various foods such as:

• Brewed black tea and coffee

• Oatmeal

• Raisins

• Potatoes

• Yogurt

• Mayo

c. Fluoride toothpaste

Another common source of fluoride is toothpaste.

4. What happens if you consume excessive fluoride?

For children who are younger than 8 years old, consuming excessive fluoride can cause enamel defects, called fluorosis. Fluorosis is a condition of enamel defect, which usually appears as tiny white or brown spots on enamel surface. Sometimes, it can appear as pitting on enamel surface.

Toxic dose: ~5mg F/kg

Lethal dose: 15mg F/kg

5. Summary

Since tap water in Europe is not fluoridated, getting fluoride from other sources is important, especially for children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and American Dental Association, fluoridated toothpaste is recommended for all children. It is advised to start using toothpaste as early as the eruption of the first tooth. For children who are younger than 3 years old, brush twice a day with a smear layer/size of a rice grain of toothpaste. For children who are from 3 to 6 years old, brush twice a day with a pea-size amount.

ABC IN KMC: Enkenbach-Alsenborn and Hochspeyer

The next stop on our journey around Kaiserslautern County leads us to the Union Community of Enkenbach-Alsenborn and Hochspeyer. It is situated on the northern tip of the Palatinate Forest and also borders Donnersberg County. A Union Community is an administrative territorial community composed of a group of individual towns or villages.

Originally Enkenbach-Alsenborn consisted of the towns of Enkenbach, Alsenborn, Mehlingen, Baalborn, Neuhemsbach and Sembach and was a separate union community. In July 2014 it was merged with the community of Hochspeyer along with Fischbach, Frankenstein and Waldleiningen.

Today the union community has 19,700 inhabitants and about 1,500 members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found homes in the towns and villages.

Stone age, iron works and glass recycling

Findings from the neo-stone age and mounds from the Iron Age suggest that the area was populated in pre-historic times. Varying traces along an old transit road indicate that there were different settlements throughout early history.

Alsenborn was first officially mentioned in chronicles in the year 872 close to the source of the Alsenz stream. A monastery was founded in the nearby village of Enkenbach, meaning “stream of the enkens” (herdsmen) in 1148. Construction

of the Klosterkirche, a monastery church, was completed about 1272 and the sandstone structure, in a mixture of ornamental Roman and Gothic elements, is still the most prominent landmark.

The former monastery garden was transformed into a relaxing herb and flower garden, with a fountain and a playground along “Wäschbach” (washing stream) used for laundry in former times.

As a favorable traffic network to Kaiserslautern and connection to the railroad system, Enkenbach flourished in the iron and metal industry, which led to an increase in population in 1871. In 1969 both villages were combined under the name Enkenbach-Alsenborn.

From 1953 to 1995 the community was also partially home to Sembach Air Base, the 86th Fighter Wing and 17th Air Force. In the meantime, the area has been developed into a commercial center with quick access to A63 and various enterprises, such as Becker, the largest waste disposal company in the region, a glass recycling firm, a storage area for heavy Army vehicles and a DHL distribution center.

Perfume, circus and the center of the world

The Parfuemmuseum in Baalborn offers a glimpse of the art of creating perfumes and was designed based on the famous book “The Perfume.” It leads visitors into a cellar decorated with flacons with tender rose and lavender scents, a distillery and ingredients for a multitude of fragrances in a 17th century setting.

The Bajasseum, a tiny muse-

um resembling a circus tent focuses on the theme and is located in Alsenborn. The town is commonly referred to as the “home of rope dancers” or “Bajasse” based on people who made livings as musicians, marionette players, acrobats or animal tamers, and roamed the countryside as circus folk during the summers in the late 19th century.

The Weltachse (world axis), or center point of earth, can be found between Johanniskreuz and Waldleiningen deep in the forest. At least this is what local poet Paul Münch proclaimed and the stone to mark this fact was inaugurated in 1964. Every year it is “smeared and protected” in a solemn ceremony in an effort to save the planet, a remedy against climate change?

There are several natural fountains within the community and both the Billesweiher and Schwarzweiher lakes are perfect venues for leisurely strolls in the forest. Castle ruins in Diemerstein and Frankenstein, near Hochspeyer, from the 12th and 13th centuries speak of medieval times and a chapel with a mighty belltower in Neuhemsbach that can be seen from afar marks the remains of a former castle.

From maneuvers to fields of heather

Until 1912 the area around Mehlingen was completely covered with forest until the German Army administration in Kaiserslautern was granted a drill ground at Kleiner Fröhnerhof. In 1938 first maneuvers took place at Grosser Fröhnerhof. Exercise operations with constant

soil damage then fostered the emergence of heather. As of 1945 the area was used as a maneuver site by French and U.S. Armed Forces. In 1994 it was decommissioned and returned to the government. The total area is 410 hectares and 150 thereof are comprised of heather, making it one of the largest heather landscapes in southern Germany. Numerous trails with educational stops along the way invite you to leisure strolls. At point “Höhe 325°” you have a panoramic view over the countryside with Donnersberg in the distance, and was proclaimed a nature preserve area in 2001.

Leisure, soccer and the police

Other leisure activities include bike and hiking trails, soccer-golf in Sembach, geocaching and a rope park. An array of clubs and associations offer sports, fishing, martial arts, tennis, basketball and bowling.

Tor, Tor, Tor!!! — was the victory cry at the 1954 FIFA World Cup championship in Switzerland. Alsenborn is proud of its famous soccer players Fritz and Ottmar Walter, both born in Kaiserslautern. Later, Fritz moved to Alsenborn with his wife Italia. Fritz was team captain and Ottmar player when Germany won the world championship in 1954. During his time as a coach for Sportverein Alsenborn in the 1960’s the team almost made it into the Bundesliga (premier league).

The Bereitschaftspolizei Rheinland-Pfalz is a training and specialization center for the police forces in the state. Teams from the center also assist in large-

scale operations throughout the Federal Republic, such as demonstrations and protests, rescue missions or provide for safety during soccer matches.

Summer sun and festival fun Alsenborn and Hochspeyer offer splash baths with slides and grassy sunbathing areas, while the pool in Mehlingen has a separate baby pool and a beach volleyball court. Colorful festivals take place throughout the summer months in every town. The “Kuckucks Kerwe” in Enkenbach is in July and Alsenborn celebrates in September. A lawn-tractor race takes place in Sembach every June.

Fun facts

Circus people helped farmers plow their fields with elephants! There is a large granite elephant pulling a plow to commemorate the times at the traffic circle entering Alsenborn.

Former Sembach Air Base was located in two counties. The flightline section in Kaiserslautern County and the admin/housing area (Heuberg) about a mile further north in the Union Community of Winnweiler in Donnersberg County.

One of the largest solar parks in Germany is in the former Sembach flightline area. About 40-50 stork families find summer homes in the re-natured (former runway) area and can be spotted flying over the village in large flocks.

Where to start your visit to Hohenschwangau Castle

Nearby villages include Schwangau, a town situated just two kilometers from the fortress, Füssen (three kilometers away, which is a wonderful little village with great hotel options), Prontfen (20 kilometers away), and Garmisch-Partenkirchen (50 kilometers away).

Of course, Hohenschwangau Castle is also very closely situated to its slightly more famous cousin, Neuschwanstein Castle. Is it very possible to visit and tour both castles in the same day.

History of Hohenschwangau Castle

Hohenschwangau as a fortress may have existed since the 12th Century, despite the fact that traditional records usually don’t mention he fortress before the fifteenth century. The castle wasn’t immune to uncertainty of the middle ages. It experienced a huge number of sieges and invasions that remarkably left it (mostly) unaffected.

Nevertheless, the location of the fortress along the slopes of the mighty Alps made it somewhat indispensable over the years. Many kings decided to restore and continue to protect the fortress for strategic and military purposes. It was a tactical holding point for soldiers and served as a remarkable defensive position, being able to hold large numbers of invaders at bay, again thanks to its strategic geographic location on the Alps.

Hohenschwangau Castle was under the administration of Schwangau knights between the twelfth and sixteenth Centuries. It served as the center of government for the Schwangau Feudal System, where it oversaw peasants undertaking work around farms in its outlying flatlands, governed by the knights.

The latest version of the castle was built on the remains of the fortress during the 19th Century by King Maximillian II of Bavaria. It was in fact the childhood home of his son, King Ludwig II, who went on to build Neuschwanstein Castle and later became known as ‘Mad King Ludwig.’

During World War I and World War II, the castle suffered no damage. In 1923, the Bavarian Landtag recognised the

right of the former royal family to reside in the castle. From 1933 to 1939, Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria and his family used the castle as their summer residence, and it continues to be a favorite residence of his successors, currently his grandson Franz, Duke of Bavaria. In May 1941, Prince Adalbert of Bavaria was purged from the military under Hitler’s Prinzenerlass and withdrew to the family castle

Hohenschwangau, where he lived for the rest of the war.

Visiting Hohenschwangau Castle

There are special tours available for visitors who would like to start to see the inside of this fantastic fortress. You can get tickets exclusively from the Hohenschwangau Castle website where you can also book tours for Neuschwanstein Castle. Tickets are non-transferable

and are only valid for the day indicated on the ticket. It is very important to be at the area given on the ticket at the specified time.

Getting there

By car, Hohenschwangau Castle is around 4.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 4 hours from Wiesbaden, and 2.5 hours from Stuttgart. For public transportation options, please check with Deutsche Bahn.
