Lessons of Dr. King come to life during annual observance By Amy L. Bugala

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs

A cast and crew of Soldier actors, volunteers and organizations brought the words and lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to life for the Wiesbaden community during the annual MLK Day observance at the Tony Bass Auditorium Jan. 19. Hosted by the 2nd Signal Brigade, the event opened with two short scenes on stage — one set in the past featuring Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, followed

The moment 10-year-old Abigail Marsters learned that her little sister needed a bone marrow transplant, she held out her arm and said, “I’m going to be the perfect match!” About a year ago Nicki and Aaron Marsters found out their youngest daughter, Adeline, now 6,

Detailed testing is required to determine a bone marrow match, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. And most people who need a transplant do not have a relative who is a close enough match to donate. When the family learned that their See ‘Superhero’ on page 12

IMCOM’s Transition Assistance Program helps Army save $900M By Leslie Hargett and William Bradner IMCOM

Unemployment Compensation for Soldiers leaving the Army during fiscal year 2016 dropped to the lowest amount recorded in 13 years. The Army ended the year at $172.8 million, according to the Department of Labor’s unemployment compensation report. Army expenditures had peaked in 2011, at $515 million. This is the first time expenditures dropped below $200 million since 2003. In the last four years the Army has saved over $900 million in cost avoidance for unemployment compensation expenditures through programs like the Installation Management Command Soldier for Life Transition Assistance Program, which prepares Soldiers for

finding employment in the civilian sector when they leave active service. “The significant reduction in the Army’s bill for unemployment compensation, along with the reduction in the national Veteran unemployment rate, can be attributed to the diligence of the team of teams at IMCOM’s SFL-TAP centers who are selfless, passionate and dedicated to this important mission,” said IMCOM Command Sgt. Maj. Melissa Judkins. IMCOM executes SFL-TAP by providing resources, guidance and support to 73 centers world-wide. The command markets the program to Soldiers, provides direct funding and manpower, develops standardized training and monitors the execution of the program. Worthington believes through diversity, service to country and volunteerism, the Department of Defense as an organization has realized that dream. How we serve others was the key message expressed by guest speaker Michael Bartelle, vice president of overseas operations for Andrews Federal Credit Union whose remarks were inspired by themes in Dr. King’s sermon, “The Drum Major Instinct,” delivered on Feb. 4, 1968. During his remarks Bartelle explained how Dr. King’s approach to the American dream was not social change just for the African American community. “This was civility and dignity for all people, to ensure the American dream was fulfilled by all, whether you were of color, a woman, poor, or a child.” Bartelle encouraged everyone to harness their skills— their individual “drum major instinct” — to serve others as opposed to serving yourself.

Bereavement support groups begin in February By U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Religious Services Office

The death of a loved one can be a very isolating and stressful event in a person’s life. While there is no right or wrong way to grieve, it is something people don’t have to do alone. In addition to the many local resources available to people who are coping with loss — Behavioral Health, Chaplains or Military Family Life Counselors –there will soon be another avenue of support for those who have lost a loved one. Bereavement support groups give people a place to talk about the feelings and experiences that occur after the death of a loved one. These support groups can help individuals connect and learn from the experiences of others who are able to identify with the emotions of grief. Beginning in February, the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Religious Services Office will sponsor two

the Department of Labor bills the Army for reimbursement. Reducing the number of Soldiers receiving compensation by assisting them in their transition to the civilian sector benefits both the Army and the Federal Government in cost avoidance savings. In 2016 alone, over 117,000 Soldiers successfully transitioned into the civilian community using SFL-TAP services. “We are excited to see that more Army Veterans are finding careers after they transition off of active duty service, and fewer are having to file for unemployment compensation,” said retired Col. Walter Herd, Director of the Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program, based out of the U.S. Army Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Although experience shows veterans generally enjoy a favorable employment rate in the nation’s job market, many veterans initially find it difficult to compete successfully in the civilian labor market. SFL-TAP Centers help Soldiers alleviate many

employment-related difficulties and prepare them for success. IMCOM SFL-TAP Centers have partnered with the Department of Labor, DOD, the Small Business Administration, and Veterans Affairs to provide employment and training information to Soldiers and their eligible spouses within one year of their separation or two years of their retirement from the military. “This is a positive step for our Soldiers and our Nation as we continue to support and provide the assistance Soldiers need as they transition off of active duty service,” Judkins said. “However, as we transition 90-thousand-plus Soldiers per year for the next 3-5 years, it’s imperative for the Army to maintain the momentum to keep Veteran unemployment low and continue to reduce UCX for the Army,” she concluded. Soldiers meet with civilian recruiters at a recent job fair at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

How SFL-TAP supports Wiesbaden Though Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program is a DA-level program run by the U.S. Army Human Resources Command, it’s executed locally by the Installation Management Command. The local SFL-TAP assistance center processes about 316 Soldiers each year as they transition from military to civilian employment, said Brad Gavle, the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Transition Services Manager. “The key to a good transition is to start as early as possible,” Gavle said. “You will want to take some of the workshops more than once as you adjust your transition plan.” Soldiers are twice as likely to get a job if they start their job search six months or more before transition, he said. Hiring our Heroes data shows that Soldiers who start late are going to earn less than those who start early. The SFL-TAP also coordinates job fairs through a partnership with the Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes program. In 2016, more than 3,000 Soldiers were hired by 629 employers after taking part in interviews at Hiring Our Heroes events. Planning is underway for the 2017 job fairs. Wiesbaden will host the Army Community Services Career Fair, March 24 at the Wiesbaden Entertainment Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Hiring Our Heroes Transition Summit will be July 27 to 28 at the Wiesbaden Fitness Center. For more information stop by the Soldier For Life, Transition Assistance Center or contact Brad Gavle, USAG Wiesbaden Transition Services Manager, civ (0611) 143548-1304 or bradley.d.gavle.civ@ mail.mil. SFL-TAP is located in Bldg. 1023E Room 154 and is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and on training holidays.

SFL-TAP provides Soldier career transition services The Soldier For Life — Transition Assistance Program provides transitioning services to Soldiers who have completed at least 180 days of continuous active duty service. SFL-TAP consists of comprehensive three-day workshops at selected IMCOM installations worldwide. Labor and Department of Veterans Affairs present the workshops. Soldiers learn about job searches, career decision-making, current occupational and labor market conditions, resume and cover letter preparation, and interviewing techniques. Participants are also provided with an evaluation of their employability relative to the job market and receive information on Veterans’ benefits.

SFL-TAP remains a commander’s program that encourages the idea of going early and often to receive transition services in order to be more prepared for transition. Soldiers are encouraged to start the program 18 months prior to their transition date or 24 months prior for retirees. The earlier a Soldier starts the program, the better prepared they are for transition from active duty to the civilian sector.

News and features DoD to open online exchange shopping to Vets By DoD News

Defense Media Activity

Veterans will soon be able to shop online at military exchanges, the Defense Department announced in a recent news release. The shopping benefit will be effective this Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2017, and will extend limited online military exchange shopping privileges to all honorably discharged veterans of the military. While shopping privileges exclude the purchase of uniforms, alcohol and tobacco products, it includes the Exchange Services’ dynamic online retail environment known so well to

service members and their families, the release said. The change follows careful analysis, coordination and strong public support, officials said in the release. “We are excited to provide these benefits to honorably discharged veterans to recognize their service and welcome them home to their military family,” said Peter Levine, performing the duties for the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. “In addition, this initiative represents a low-risk, low-cost opportunity to help fund morale, welfare and recreation programs in support of service members’ and their families’ quality of life. And it’s

just the right thing to do,” Levine added. The online benefit will also strengthen the exchanges’ online businesses to better serve current patrons. Inclusion of honorably discharged veterans would

conservatively double the exchanges’ online presence, according to DoD officials, thereby improving the experience for all patrons through improved vendor terms, more competitive merchandise assortments and improved efficiencies. “As a nation, we are grateful for the contributions of our service members,” Levine said. “Offering this lifetime online benefit is one small, tangible way the nation can say, ‘Thank you’ to those who served with honor.” The original release can be found at www.defense.gov/News/Article/ Article/1049558/dod-opens-onlineexchange-shopping-to-veterans.

Are you new to Wiesbaden? Have you been saddled with the responsibility of sponsoring personnel relocating to Germany? Then head down to the Total Army Sponsorship Program and Newcomers Rodeo to roundup some answers, Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wiesbaden Fitness Center. The goal of the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden hosted event is to ensure individuals who sponsor personnel have the knowledge and resources to facilitate a seamless transition for Soldiers, Families and civilians into and out of commands and installations. Whether you’re a Soldier or civilian, the goal during a permanent change of station is the same – “to get settled and transition back to life, routine and work as soon as possible,” said Dan White, sponsorship and benefits coordinator, USAG Wiesbaden. TASP provides the foundation for units to welcome and help prepare incoming personnel and their families for their new duty station. The rodeo will be conducted in a “round-robin” style training format with representatives from more than 16 service providers

that play a role in the relocation process as well as Unit level Sponsorship Coordinators. “This is an opportunity for units to get all their Soldiers certified as trained sponsors and for newcomers to speak oneon-one with providers about any outstanding issues that may be keeping them from settling into their new community,” White said. The rodeo will cover resources during pre-arrival, arrival and post arrival from all agencies. “The transition process starts months ahead of arrival with good sponsorship, but doesn’t end there — relocation and inprocessing are the next steps,” said White, explaining why the whole community can benefit from attending the rodeo. Sponsors and newcomers can discuss relocation issues related to finances, housing, spouse employment or career, medical, schools, and more. Chances are, anyone with an unanswered question on their relocation “to do” list, will find the answer here from one of the participating agencies he said. “No two relocation experiences are alike,” added Taylor Doud, an Army Community Service spouse sponsorship and relocation coordinator. “Everyone has a different life and family situation, so there is no one size

fits all when it comes to sponsorship or to answering the most critical relocation questions.” All members of the Wiesbaden community, Soldiers, Department of Army Civilians, Non-Appropriated fund employees and family members are invited to attend. Some participating agencies include; Army Community Services, CYSS, Student Liaison Officer, Spouse Sponsorship, Ramstein Gateway Reception Center, In-processing Center, CPAC, Finance, Army Wellness Center, Europe Regional Medical Command, TRICARE, On and Off Post Housing, Command Team Responsibilities and Unit Sponsorship Program Manager Responsibilities. “Good sponsorship is key and critical to the relocation process. You’re not just moving your job, you’re moving your entire life,” White said. “Whether you’ve been here one day, one month or even one year, the event will provide information and tools for a successful relocation to Wiesbaden.” For more information about the USAG Wiesbaden Total Army Sponsorship Program and Newcomers Rodeo, call DSN 548-1615 or civ (0611) 143-548-1615 or stop by the Welcome Center Bldg. 1023W, Room 119.

Director of Army Instruction, retired Maj. Bob Hase, requested the review because he is confident the Battalion will exceed the 93.68 percent score this year. The Senior Army Instructor at Wiesbaden High School, retired Col. Cadets have been working on a new Service Learning Project to clean-up the Hainerberg Military Complex. As part of the project, students learn ways to improve their environment, then use what they learn to serve others, and reflect on the project experience back in the classroom. Battalion community service also includes color guard support to numerous events and tutoring math to Wiesbaden Middle School students with the support of Dr. Susan Hargis, the WMS Principal.

Academics

The Warrior Battalion is putting emphasis on academic improvement. A Cadet’s academic strengths and weaknesses will be determined through a new Continuous Improvement Project which looks at data from first and second quarter grades and then at PSAT scores. Academic requirements to get promoted include receiving a C grade or higher for the semester. Cadets must also implement a rigorous tutoring and mentorship program to help their peers academically after the data has been properly analyzed. Through their current program, Cadets are committed to learning or mastering new skills both in and outside the classroom to include the annual JROTC essay contest; the annual JROTC leadership and academic bowl national completion; JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (Summer Camp); Marksmanship using our new state of the art Air Rifle Indoor Air Rifle Range; drill and ceremony competitions; map reading and land navigation; and their annual field trip to Observation Point Alpha Memorial overlooking the Fulda Gap near the former East

Finding the ideal workout to suit one’s individual health and fitness goals can be daunting. Getting professional guidance can greatly enhance a person’s overall approach and follow-through. That’s where personal trainers enter the picture. “Every person is different,” said Alina Dukes, one of seven personal trainers at the Wiesbaden Sports, Fitness and Outdoor Recreation Center, explaining that personal trainers help people identify their fitness needs, goals and physical challenges. “Personal trainers are coaches, role models, educators and cheerleaders,” said Maria Diaz, installation fitness coordinator. “They’re miracle workers — you can’t put a price on that.” “Personal trainers are for everybody,” said Michelle Matheny, a personal trainer and military spouse, “not just to help someone get better, but also for someone who has never been in the gym before.” The idea is to help individuals set and attain realistic goals, lose

weight or gain definition if desired and improve athletic performance, the trainers noted. “Personal training is not only physical — we’re a little like psychologists finding ways to motivate and improve physical, emotional and spiritual health,” said Dukes. “Like saving for retirement, you also need to invest in your future health.” Before beginning any fitness regimen with a personal trainer, participants undergo a fitness evaluation including flexibility, cardiovascular, muscle strength and endurance screenings. Personal trainers work one-on-one with individuals to make sure they are getting the most out of their workouts while doing so safely. “I like the challenge of coming up with routines and individual fitness programs,” said Matheny, explaining that each of the personal trainers has specific skills, providing a depth of knowledge and experience. Individuals may turn to a personal trainer simply to better understand the various exercise and weight gear available, to prepare for a sporting event or to recover from an injury. “I think people sometimes come in with big expectations, and I try to help them see reasonable, short-term goals,” Matheny said.

When seeking a personal trainer, the first step is to stop by the fitness center on Clay Kaserne and pick up a brochure explaining the options at the front desk. “They can send us an email, describe what they’re looking for and we’ll set up a free consultation,” said Rachel Campbell, a fitness instructor, personal trainer and military spouse. “The majority of our clientele come to us to become more familiar with our equipment and to get back in shape.” “I enjoy being a personal trainer – that feeling that you’re doing something good for someone,” said Dukes. “You take a person at one level and it feels good to take them to another level.” One-on-one personal trainer sessions cost $45. Or one can pay $200 for five sessions; $300 for 10 sessions. For more information about the personal trainer program, stop by the Wiesbaden Sports, Fitness and Outdoor Recreation Center located in Bldg. 1631 on Clay Kaserne. Local scouts place at international winter survival competition By Herald Union Staff

Troop 65 teamed up with Troop 90 from Frankfurt to take home third place honors overall at the Transatlantic Council Klondike Derby in Kandersteg, the location of the International Scouting Center in Switzerland. There were 53 teams that participated in the “Great White Out” event which took place on Jan. 13 to 16. The Klondike Derby is an annual event held by the Boy Scouts of America during the winter months and is based on the heritage of the Klondike Gold Rush.

The derby consists of several stations where patrols must test their Scoutcraft skills and their leadership abilities, earning points towards a total score as the scouts navigate between stations. The unit must transport their gear on a homemade sled pulled by the scouts. In addition to the participation ribbon and winning the third place overall honors, Troop 65 received first place in shelter building, second place in fire building, and third place in “Kim’s Game” (memory association). The Boy Scouts, their parents, and supporters gather around the Klondike sled they constructed to compete in the Klondike Derby, Jan. 13 to 16.

Toy exchange

Within the framework of the exhibition “The Treasure in the Garbage,” the environmental advisors invite young visitors to exchange and give away toys in good condition. To participate, put cars, dolls, card games and more on the “exchange and gift table” and take “new” toys if necessary. Children enjoy the exchange, and the environment does, too. Because when things are passed on, nothing new has to be produced. This saves raw materials, energy and also creates fun! Toys can now be delivered at the “Umweltladen,” Luisenstraße 19 in Wiesbaden. However, the individual parts should not be larger than a reusable shopping bag. The exchange and gift shop runs through Feb. 21 Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Creative workshop

Whether parents, grandparents, aunt, or uncle, those big and small can craft together in the family afternoon workshop. Artist Mireille Jautz will lead the workshops. Participation is free; however, the participating adults should email kulturellebildung@wiesbaden.de with

“Fastnacht” in Wiesbaden

In the Hessian state capital, the “fifth season” (Carnival/Mardi Gras) has been officially celebrated since 1859. This year it begins Feb 23 with the traditional “Altweiberfastnacht” (Fat Thursday) in the Wiesbaden Altstadt (Old Town). On this day the town center is populated by those reveling in the festivities and the beginning of this popular phase of the Wiesbaden fast night is extensively celebrated. The festivities continue Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. with the children’s festival in Wiesbaden, which has been ringing in Fastnacht Saturday for a few years. At 3:11 p.m. the popular children’s pageant begins and each junior Carnivaler can practice what it means to become a great fool. After the children’s pageant,

the fools storm the town hall of Wiesbaden and take over the power until Ash Wednesday. Feb. 26, Wiesbaden’s Carnival parade, well known far beyond the city’s borders, awaits. The tour starts at 1:11 p.m. at Elsässer Platz. From there, the parade makes its way through the city center past the town hall and with thousands of fools on the edge of the street, almost 400,000 Carnivalers in the past year up and about again. When the parade has finished its journey, celebrations will continue for a long time. In the bars and pubs, there is a lively Carnival atmosphere until the wee hours of the morning. Ash Wednesday, March 1, everything will come to an end and the fools return the town hall key to Lord Mayor Sven Gerich. Then they pack their costumes and prepare for the new campaign 2017/2018. For the parade route, go to: www.wiesbaden.de/lebenin-wiesbaden/freizeit/feste/fastnacht/ fastnachtsumzug.php.

Rose Monday Parade in Mainz

“Fassenacht,” or Carnival — the famous fifth season and the celebration that out-parties all others Feb. 27. Carnival means wonderful days and all-night parties, dinners in fine halls with political speeches and “Kokolores”(gobbledegook), costumed balls and the huge Rosenmontag parade through the city center. Carnival’s origins stretch right back to the 16th century, while the first carnival societies were founded in Mainz in the 19th century. But carnival is also part of the city’s history — a phenomenon of cultural history that has made this Carnival center famous far beyond the boundaries of the city thanks to the wellknown television show, “Mainz bleibt Mainz, wie es singt und lacht.” The highlight of each Carnival campaign is Rose Monday, with all of Mainz on its feet, transforming the inner city into a colorful sea. The parade, with its political motorbikes, swirling cloaks, music trains, carriages and guards, makes its way along the celebrating crowd. Place: Große Bleiche, 55116 Mainz; Time: 11:11 a.m. More information: www. mainz.de/freizeit-und-sport/feste-undveranstaltungen/fastnacht.php.

to use their imaginations as well as items from around their house to come up with a costume. House’s original superhero costume, complete with a rainbow skirt, heart antennae and bright blue contact lenses, was “‘Brave Heart.’ Because you have to be brave, even when it’s hard,” she said. Some of Adeline’s classmates were “Super Bunny” who bounces high, “Techno Boy” who runs inside computers and “Pink Rose” who saves the day. House said she was impressed with the family’s bravery and faith. “Any little bit of support that we can give them, any little bit of love that we can give them, just to show them that we’re here and we’re praying for them, is pretty much what this is all about.” And the Marsters family has been grateful for the outpouring of support. “The school has just been amazing,” Nicki Marsters said. “We have just felt nothing but love.”

The girls are passionate about learning and love helping others, Nicki Marsters said. “Both of our daughters love science. Abigail is really into experiments and scientific research and Adeline adores working with children.” She also said Abigail wants to find a cure for her sister’s disease and that she’s been able to harness her scientific interest into doing some projects at school on bone marrow transplantation. Abigail is expected to make a quick recovery from being a bone marrow donor. But it will likely be four to six months before Adeline can return to school, so she will be gearing up to return to Aukamm for first grade, Nicki Marsters said. And that is something they are looking forward to. “Our family is so blessed to live in such a loving community. The support that our children have felt has been incredible.”

Atlantic Resolve logistics: Life on the highway Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Timothy Hughes 24th Press Camp HQ

DRAWSKO POMORSKIE, Poland — Paper clips, computer screens, fuel, beans, bullets, and virtually everything that can be shipped has a National Stock Number or a similar label assigned to it for ordering and resupplying purposes. For the U.S. Army logisticians assigned to Company A, 64th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, deployed in Poland for Atlantic Resolve, two revolving questions persist, “What supplies are each unit in the field requesting and how do I get said supplies to various units separated hours from each other?” “When we do our LOGPAC movements, what we do is move any kind of class of supply that the maneuver units may need,” said 1st Lt. Chase Wilson. The crew completed a nearly 90-mile convoy from Skwierzyna, Poland, to here. “Today,” Wilson said, “we moved Class IX repair parts ... we also moved Class III fuel.” As many Soldiers know, some convoys go much farther than 90 miles. Some convoys that support units conduct can become multi-day missions, carrying equipment and supplies critical to ground forces’ ability to complete their missions. These convoys are often time sensitive and require keen attention to detail — regardless of the distance required to deliver the supplies. “It’s very important because without those logistics, those troops cannot move,” said Spc. Varlee Talawally, water purification specialist. Spc. Devin Whitehurst said it raises morale when Soldiers have supplies and support units capable of moving out and supporting them wherever they are. As famous battles in history have shown, the inability of one side to regularly resupply forces can easily decide the outcome of a conflict. “I think it would have a negative impact,” Whitehurst said. “At our level, we fuel the fight,” said the Houston, Texas, native. “If we can't get the fuel to the fight, there probably will be no motivation to carry out the mission.” The unit is slated to support Atlantic Resolve in various allied and partner countries, which provides an opportunity for Soldiers to experience different military cultures. “I'm actually excited,” said Staff Sgt. William Hudson, water section leader, “I've never been to Europe; I've never worked with any NATO forces. It's definitely going to be a new experience for me — it's something I'm looking forward to!” Hudson said he looks forward to learning from and sharing knowledge with his allied counterparts and to take those lessons back to the field. The 3rd Armored Brigade is the first of back-toback armored brigade rotations that will rotate through Europe as part of Atlantic Resolve. This rotation will enhance deterrence capabilities in the region, improve the U.S. ability to respond to potential crises and defend allies and partners in the European community. U.S. forces will focus on strengthening capabilities and sustaining readiness through bilateral and multinational training and exercises.

The Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic wants to help you avoid a broken heart not only this Valentine’s month, but for your future as well. “Going Red” means being ready to take control of your health. Heart disease is the number one killer in women and yet only 20 percent of women believe that heart disease is their greatest threat. As a result women are more likely than men to ignore the warning signs of a heart attack. Let’s look at some very unsettling facts: • Heart disease causes 1 in 3 women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. • 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. • Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease and the gap

between men and women’s survival continues to widen. • The symptoms of heart disease can be different in women vs. men, and are often misunderstood. • While 1 in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, 1 in 3 dies of heart disease. What causes heart disease? Heart disease affects the blood vessels and cardiovascular system. Numerous problems can result from this, many of which are related to a process called atherosclerosis, a condition that develops when plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke. Heart disease can take many other forms as well: • Heart failure or congestive heart failure, which means that the heart is still working, but it isn’t pumping blood as well as it should, or getting

enough oxygen. • Arrhythmia or an abnormal rhythm of the heart. This can affect whether the heart is able to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. • Heart valve problems can lead to the heart not opening enough to allow proper blood flow. How can I prevent it? There are a number of risk factors that can contribute to heart disease. Some of these you can control through lifestyle modifications. But the key takeaway is that with the right information, education and care, heart disease in women can be treated, prevented and even ended. A few lifestyle changes you should make include; don’t smoke; manage your blood sugar; get your blood pressure under control; lower your cholesterol; know your family history; lose weight; and eat healthy. The Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic is committed to helping patients reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease and has programs to support those important lifestyle changes that make a

Army Nurse Corps celebrates 116th anniversary By Lt. Col. Terri J. Holloway-Petty Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic

The Army Nurse Corps celebrated its 116th anniversary Feb. 2, and another chapter in its rich tradition of dedicated service. The history of the Army Nurse Corps dates back to 1901 when Army nurses became a part of the Army Medical Department. Since then, theArmy Nurse Corps has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the Army, providing care and touching the lives of Soldiers and service members, retirees and their Family members. TheArmy Nurse Corps is driving change in support of the Army, Army medicine, and the nursing profession. The Nurse Corps motto says it all: “Embrace the Past”- leverage our lessons learned; “Engage the Present”- achieve performance excellence; and “Envision the Future”- ensure organizational credibility and sustainability. Today, under the leadership of Maj. Gen. Barbara R. Holcomb, Chief of the Army Nurse

Corps and Commanding General, Medical Research and Materiel Command at Fort Detrick, Md., more than 9,000 Army nurses are on active duty, in the U.S. Army Reserve or National Guard in support of military and humanitarian missions in the U.S. and overseas. In concert with Gen. Mark A. Milley, 39th Chief of Staff

of the Army, this year’s Army Nurse Corps Theme is “Leading Readiness and Professional Practice: Getting it done since 1901!” In the military, readiness means more than ensuring the mastery of technical and tactical skills and competencies or more than the gleaning of essential documents required prior to a

deployment (i.e. power of attorneys and wills). Readiness is more than preparing family for your extended absence at home or the possibility of an untoward injury or illness downrange. Readiness is also ensuring that members of the Armed Forces are medically ready to fight and win tonight. The Army Nurse Corps and all components of the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) take an active approach to achieve medical readiness. Here at the Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic, the Soldier Medical Readiness Center (SMRC) proactively contacts non-deployable servicemen due to delinquent Period Health Assessments (PHA), dental screenings, immunizations, hearing or some other condition making the servicemen non-deployable. Army Nurses lead the way in academic education and in the diversity of their clinical and leadership experience. These skills combined are invaluable asset to achieve readiness and contribute to the highest survival rate in modern history.

It’s that time of year again! Germany is celebrating its “fifth season” — Fasching Season or Fastnacht Season! Get your Halloween costume back out of the closet and get ready to shout “Helau!” as loud as you can. Every February, Fasching gets into full swing with big parades on the streets and fairs in the cities to celebrate the beginning of the Lenten season. The early beginnings of Fasching, Carneval or how the locals of the Rhein Main area call it — “Fastnacht” — date back to around 3,000 B.C., when tribes were celebrating the wedding of a deity. Even the Romans celebrated their god Saturnus with a big festival in January and people in the medieval times continued this tradition by dressing up and dancing around the castles, mocking the clergy. Although the Fasching tradition almost died out during the Reformation and was halted again during the two world wars, it came back to full bloom in the 1950s, especially in Köln, Düsseldorf and Mainz, where it gave people in the post-war era new hope and encouraged them to “laugh in tears” (Lache unter Tränen). In modern times, the three cities are Germany’s Fasching capitals. The big party starts out on a Thursday — this year on Feb. 23, when women dress up in funny costumes and carry a pair of scissors to cut off the ties of men, literally cutting off the symbol of men’s power. Many companies end their workday on that day around noon – either because the men are scared of the women or to allow their female workers

to go out on the streets and can and celebrate at a bar. On Friday, the so-calle allowed to smear soot into this custom is not practic Rhein-Main area. biggest in the country and features almost 100 Fasching clubs with almost 10,000 active participants from Mainz and other European cities. The first time this parade was held was in 1838. The parade starts at 11:11 a.m. at Boppstrasse and marches about 7.2 kilometers through the downtown area. Good places to watch the parade are Schillerplatz and in front of the State Theater. However, these are also the most crowded places, because that is where TV cameras will broadcast the event live to the major German TV stations, so make sure to be early and yell the word helau (“Hell-ouw”) as loud as you can with the crowd. You may want to bring a bag with you, because candy and small toys will be tossed into the crowd from the big floats. After the parade, make sure to go to the market place in front of the cathedral where there will be a fair with carousels, Bratwurst and even more candy. Some examples of funny parade participants are the so-called “Schwellkoepp” (swollen heads), which are large heads that are modeled after famous characters from the history of Fasching. There are over 30 different characters. When you see them, keep in mind that the person underneath the head is carrying 25 kg (around 50 lbs) on a 7.2km (4.5 miles) march through the city. Fasching time is about being happy and getting ready for Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday (March 1 this year), when all festivities finally come to an end, so make sure to dress up, eat some comfort food and enjoy the fun that the Rhein Main area has to offer during this fifth season.

These meaty snacks, which taste just like the meatballs Mom used to make, are easy to cook and even easier to eat. Combine about a pound of lean ground beef and an egg with desired amounts of dehydrated onions, garlic powder and seasoned breadcrumbs. Brown tablespoon-sized meatballs in heated skillet, using extra virgin olive oil so they won’t stick. Transfer to 350-degree oven for 20-30 minutes until they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees. Place meatballs in crockpot to keep them warm. With toothpicks, guests can dip them in a variety of sauces such as sweet and sour, cajon, barbecue or a red pasta sauce. Baked Zucchini Fries

Who doesn’t love a great plate of nachos? This classic snack combines many of your favorite party dishes into one delicious appetizer. For this nachos recipe from Kraft, brown ground beef in a skillet and drain. Then place the meat on top of your favorite tortilla chips (extra thick, longer strips work great for dipping). Load up the chips with salsa, jalapeños, olives, guacamole and cheese. If you want to beef up your nachos even more, add a can of refried beans on top. This classic appetizer is sure to score big with the fans. Classic Meatballs

Here’s a healthy twist to a party favorite. Baked zucchini fries are almost as good as their deep-fried counterparts, but are a better choice for those opting for a more nutritional snack. Slice three small zucchinis into French fry size planks (about 4 inches long, 1/2-inch wide). Sprinkle lightly with salt and then dip into an egg wash (2 whisked eggs). Dip each stick into a mixture of panko or seasoned crumbs (1 cup), Italian seasoning (2 tablespoons) and 1/4- to 1/3cup of shredded Parmesan cheese (or another favorite cheese). Bake on a lined cookie sheet for about 10-12 minutes at 425 degrees. Guests can dip the zucchini fries into their favorite sauce such as marinara, ranch or onion.

Fruit Skewers with Yogurt Dip

Photo by margouillat photo / Shutterstock.com

Satisfy your younger guests with fun fruit skewers. They are easy to make and fun to eat with your favorite dipping sauce. You will need 10 large or 20 small strawberries, 1/2 cantaloupe and 1/3 watermelon cut into one-inch cubes, 1 or 2 apples or kiwis cut into chunks and green or purple grapes. Thread 4 to 5 pieces of fruit onto each skewer and arrange on a serving platter. Pair the skewers with a strawberry or other fruit-flavored yogurt dip. Even the big kids will enjoy them. Jalapeño Pops These quick and easy Super Bowl snacks can add quite a bite to your menu. Mix one package of softened cream cheese with a cup of Parmesan cheese, 2 to 3 tablespoons of diced jalapeños and two egg yolks. Roll a teaspoon-sized ball of the mixture in breadcrumbs and bake for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees on an ungreased cookie sheet. Serve the bites warm and with any of the following sauces: Peanut, savory raspberry jam, ranch, salsa, sour cream or melted cheese. These must-have snacks are affordable, easy to make and pack a delicious punch. Offer these tasty treats to your guests and you’re sure to make some fans by the end of the game.
