Shrinking DoD’s European footprint
Wiesbaden installations to close, return to host nation The footprint of U.S. forces will get smaller in Wiesbaden as the Department of Defense makes plans to return Mainz-Kastel Storage Station and Amelia Earhart Complex to the host nation. The DoD announced Jan. 8 the consolidation of some U.S. infrastructure in Europe, including the return of 15 sites to its host nations. These actions, taken as part of the European Infrastructure Consolidation process, will save the U.S. government approximately $500 million annually. These actions will result in a slight decrease in U.S. force levels, but will also ensure they are most effectively positioned to enable the U.S. and its NATO allies to respond quickly to crises worldwide. According to DoD leaders, these actions will result in the greater efficiency and effectiveness of the DoD in Europe by reducing the U.S. footprint while ensuring that the infrastructure in place will continue — now and into the future — to sustain U.S. interests and support its partners in the region. “As part of an overall restructuring of our basing in Europe, we have been working with our allies to reposition thousands of our military and civilian personnel within the region,” said Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. “I See Shrinking footprint on page 3

Key facilities face improvements, completion By Shayna Brouker U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office
The start of the new year brings several changes — and progress — to facilities and services as U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden moves a few steps closer to a more consolidated community with enhanced quality of life. Updates include improvements to the Taunus Theater, opening of the new Clay Kaserne Access Control Point, bus stop changes and the grand opening of the Hainerberg Post Exchange,
which will move some Army Air Force Exchange Service activities from the MainzKastel Storage Station. “We’re excited about the changes coming to the community,” said Col. Mary Martin, USAG Wiesbaden commander. “These much anticipated quality-of-life additions should make our community a better place to live, work and play.”
Taunus Movie Theater
Renovation of the Taunus Movie Theater began Jan. 12, with the last movie showing at Taunus Jan. 11. Improvements include installing air
conditioning and replacing lighting and seats and are scheduled to be complete by mid-May. Movies will be shown at the Tony Bass Theater (Building 1043) on Clay Kaserne starting Friday evening, Jan. 16. 3D movies will not be shown, and it will be a cash/U.S. dollars-only venue. There will be a snack stand available. Starting Jan. 22, the theater will show movies Thursday through Sunday. The movie schedule is available at https://www. shopmyexchange.com/reeltime-theatres/Hainerberg-

Resolution 2015: Ensure NATO readiness By Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges
Commander of U.S. Army Europe
Happy New Year and welcome 2015. I hope you’ve enjoyed some much deserved time off and were able to spend it with family and friends. I’m glad to have spent Christmas visiting our troops in Kosovo and Turkey. These missions, where we serve alongside our allies, may not be in the news regularly but they are vital to the collective defense and assurance of Europe and deterrence of potential enemies. This year we’re going to keep up our pace moving forward with Operation Atlantic Resolve. Elements from our own 2nd Cavalry Regiment and later, 3rd Infantry Division from Fort Stewart, Ga., will be the first two rotational forces this year. The 4th Infantry Division’s headquarters from Fort Carson, Colo., will send personnel to take over OAR mission command, a role that U.S. Army Europe personnel filled in 2014. In December, I introduced the Strong Europe framework.
It aims to create beneficial opportunities for the United States and our allies, improve inLt. Gen. Ben teroperability and capacHodges ity with allies and partners and facilitate U.S. and NATO logistical infrastructure to ease movement between member nations. This year we need to think about being NATO Ready. I’m challenging Army Europe to determine how we can be NATO Ready as the alliance transitions away from operations in Afghanistan and faces new, and some reemerging, global threats and challenges. The first step is to work regularly with all levels of NATO including headquarters, simulation centers and other agencies. My end goal is to ensure we support and enable the Allied Land Command, the current NATO Response Force Corps and NATO Centres of

Excellence. Second, Army forces — those assigned to Europe and those here as part of the Regionally Aligned Force — must be capable of conducting operations with the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force and the NATO Response Force. Finally, our leaders need to be trained or educated in NATO policies, procedures, standards and doctrine to help ensure seamless integration with our allies. Of course, achieving NATO Ready requires time in the field and on the range, but it doesn’t all happen there. We have to talk to our counterparts in our Allied Land Forces regularly. We need to sit next to them at conferences, seminars and classes. We need to know their culture and show them a bit of ours. As always, thank you for everything you are doing here daily in support of our mission and in support of our allies. I am proud to serve by your side as this year begins. Army Strong, Strong Europe.

News and commentary News flash Climate assessment sessions
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden will host three focus groups Jan. 23 in the Tony Bass Auditorium in order to gauge the organization’s climate and allow civilians employees to offer command leaders feedback. The purpose is to gauge the unit climate in concert with the command climate survey that was conducted in October. The information gathered during the focus groups will be used to help improve the atmosphere of the garrison. All garrison civilian employees are invited to participate in the focus groups in order for officials to verify the data that was collected in the fall. The discussion sessions will last about one hour and will be consistent with the content of the survey. The sessions are designed to encourage uninhibited commentary, so directors and primary staff officers are not allowed to attend. The three iterations are structured as follows: Employees in grades GS-1 to GS-6 and local nation grades C4C5 at 9:30 a.m.; GS-7 to GS-9 and C5a-C6 at 11 a.m.; and GS-11 to GS-13 and C7a employees and above at 1:30 p.m.

Expedited screening
The Transportation Security Administration has extended its expedited screening benefits to students of the four U.S. service academies — the U.S. Military Academy, Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy and Air Force Academy. Last year the TSA extended its expedited screening benefits to all U.S. Armed Forces service members, including those serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, Reserves and National Guard. The program allows participating flyers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and keep compliant liquids/gels in a carry-on bag while being screened at more than 120 participating airports and flying on 11 major airlines. Service members/students should use their Department of Defense ID card to obtain the expedited screening. The TSA has extended the expedited screening benefits to civilian DoD employees who follow an “opt-in” process online. For more information visit tsa.gov or defensetravel. dod.mil. Continued from page 1 know that this will result in a reduction in size of our local host nation workforce at some locations (not Wiesbaden); I value the tremendous support they provided us for decades and continue to provide today. In the end, this transformation of our infrastructure will help maximize our military capabilities in Europe and help strengthen our important European partnerships, so that we can best support our NATO allies and partners in the region.” The administration asked for, and received, congressional approval for the European Reassurance Initiative — a total of $985 million for DoD — which will: enhance a U.S. rotational presence in Europe for training, exercises, and other NATO activities; implement infrastructure improvement projects to support the increase military presence by the U.S. and other allies in eastern Europe; pre-position U.S. assets in Europe; and enable the United States to build the capacity of our newer allies as well as Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. The DoD also announced the first F-35 basing in Europe at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom, which will bring new opportunities for collaboration between the U.S. and UK air forces. The EIC and F-35 basing decisions will result in a net decrease of approximately 2,000 U.S. military and civilian personnel in the UK over the next several years. This loss is primarily due to the removal of about 3,200 U.S. personnel from RAF Mildenhall, which will be offset by the addition of about 1,200 U.S. military personnel who will be permanently stationed alongside the two F-35 squadrons going to RAF Lakenheath. In Portugal, there will be a decrease of approximately 500 U.S. military and civilian personnel at Lajes Field in the Azores, necessary for consolidation efforts in Europe. The 15 site returns are part of U.S. European Command’s continued effort to remove non-enduring sites from its real-property inventory, and allow more resources to be focused on other U.S. European Command mission requirements. Program to honor MLK life, legacy By William B. King 5th Signal Command Public Affairs Office
Soldiers and family members of the Wiesbaden military community are invited to participate in a program honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 22 at the Wiesbaden Fitness Center on Clay Kaserne. Andrews Federal Credit Union lends its vice president of overseas operations to the event as the guest speaker. “From its inception, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is just that; providing all Americans an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of one of our transformative citizens, while affecting within our collective conscience
the inherent value of service,” said Michael Bartelle. The program, which is hosted by 5th Signal Command, will begin at 11:45 a.m. and is open to all ID cardholders. Dr. King’s contributions to promoting civil rights in the United States serve as an inspiration to many people throughout world, and events held to honor his life allow his legacy to live on, said Col. Jimmy L. Hall Jr., commander of 5th Signal Command. “Dr. King’s legacy means a lot to me personally. Learning about his life and work can help us to strengthen our own commitment to the Army values,” said Hall. “We are honored to hosting this event for Wiesbaden military community.”
Sgt. 1st Class John Brandt, 5th Signal Command Equal Opportunity advisor, said observances such as the MLK program are an important part of the EO mission. “Observances give the audience a chance for a unique experience as well as a chance to gain knowledge and broaden their individual diversity,” Brandt said. After April, the only remaining AAFES activities on Mainz-Kastel installation will be the Shopette, Car Care Center, Car Wash and some food vendors. The Thrift Store will remain on Mainz Kastel for the time being. Community response on Facebook was mixed, ranging from excitement to disappointment — from “This is great news!” to “Sad that there’s no healthy food options.” Several community members asked why Subway will not be included at the new Exchange food court. Dan Barriga, general manager of the Wiesbaden Exchange, said decisions are based on past sales trends, and their business decisions reflect that. All options offer healthy variations on their standard offerings such as grilled chicken versus fried, wraps as opposed to bread, etc. “We will certainly monitor performance of all these operations and revise as needed,” he said. Some resident parking is affected. In order to secure Hainerberg by the opening of the new PX on April 17, the garrison is constructing a temporary ACP on Washingtonstrasse near the old PX entrance with anticipated completion in mid-April. The old PX ACP will continue to operate. Additionally, there will be pedestrian/bike gates located near the gas station (where the existing exit turnstile is now) and near the high school.
In conjunction with the city of Wiesbaden and Hesse traffic planners, the garrison is also upgrading the intersection at Washington and B455, to include turning lanes and a traffic light.
DoDDS Schools
School buses will continue to use the Texasstrasse access near the high school. Construction of the new high school classroom facility will begin in April with a two-year construction. The elementary and middle schools are also under design. Demolition of the old family housing units across from the elementary school will be done in 2015 to make room for the new middle school. News and features Legislation changes UCMJ for victims of sexual assault Care for victims
By David Vergun Army News Service
The fiscal year 2015 National Defense Authorization Act signed into law last month, significantly changes the Uniform Code of Military Justice in cases pertaining to rape and sexual assault. All of the UCMJ amendments contained in the NDAA pertain to investigating and prosecuting sexual assault crimes and victim care, said Lt. Col. John Kiel Jr., chief of policy branch, criminal law division, Office of the Judge Advocate General. Changes to the Manual for Courts-Martial have been A big change involves Ar- brought about by the National Defense Authorization Act ticle 32 preliminary hearings, for fiscal year 2015, which became effective Dec. 26, 2014. Kiel said.
Article 32 background
The purpose of an Article 32 investigation was at one time “to provide discovery to the defense,” he said. Then, the FY14 NDAA directed that the purpose of an Article 32 be “to determine whether probable cause exists to believe that an offense under the UCMJ has been committed and that the accused committed it.” Article 32 hearings are now modeled after preliminary hearings in the federal criminal system, Kiel said. The FY15 NDAA requires that the preliminary hearing be conducted by a preliminary hearing officer who is a judge advocate and that qualifying victims, as defined in the statute, have a right not to testify at the hearing should they so choose. This right applies to both military and civilian victims.
Special victims counsel
Over a year ago, the defense secretary directed that each of the services create a special victims’ counsel program, whereby each victim of sexual assault would be entitled to free legal counsel to represent them during all phases of the investigation and courts-martial proceedings. “By all accounts, the services and Congress are pleased with the success achieved by these programs thus far,” Kiel said. The FY15 NDAA made three additional modifications. First, Congress directed that the military rules of evidence be amended to reflect that wherever
a victim has a right to be heard, the victim may exercise that right through his or her counsel, he said. Second, Congress directed the service secretaries to publish procedures to ensure that special victims’ counsel receive adequate notice of the scheduling of hearings, trials, and other courts-martial proceedings. Third, victims may now petition the service court of criminal appeals for a writ of mandamus — an order from a superior court to a subordinate government court — in cases where the victim believes the military judge erred in a ruling pertaining to rape shield evidence under Military Rule of Evidence 412 or violating the psychotherapist-patient privilege under MRE 513. Regarding MRE 513, Kiel said the NDAA requires that the existing privilege between a psychotherapist and patient be expanded to include other licensed mental health professionals. It also requires that before any protected information may be released, a military judge conduct a closed hearing and apply a number of legal factors first before ordering the production or disclosure of any information. In the FY14 NDAA, Congress required that commanders who have the discretion to dispose of offenses committed under the UCMJ can no longer consider the general military character of the accused in doing so. In this year’s NDAA, Congress went even further by
prohibiting the consideration of general military character during the findings phase of courts-martial proceedings except for a limited number of enumerated offenses where that kind of character evidence would be relevant to the charged offense(s), Kiel said.
Convening authority
Congress also created a system in the FY14 NDAA whereby any decision not to refer a sexual assault offense to court-martial by a convening authority will be reviewed by a superior competent authority, he said. In the case where the convening authority and his or her staff judge advocate disagree about the referral decision, the case will then be sent to the service secretary for review. In the case where both the convening authority and the staff judge advocate agree not to refer, the case will be reviewed by the next higher convening authority. The FY15 NDAA created an additional review mechanism, Kiel said. It mandates that in any case where a convening authority decides not to refer a sex assault offense, the chief prosecutor of the service may request that the service secretary review it, and if such a request is made, the secretary must review it. The judge advocate general of each service may designate a chief prosecutor for purposes of this provision if such a position does not already exist within their respective service.
Two other changes in the FY15 NDAA apply to the treatment and care of victims of sex assault. The first mandates that victims of sexual assault crimes be given an opportunity to express a preference as to whether their case is tried by the military or by the local prosecutor, Kiel said. If the victim chooses the latter, the convening authority must ensure that the local prosecutor is made aware of the victim’s preference, understanding that the preference is not binding on the prosecutor. The convening authority must inform the victim about the prosecutor’s decision to prosecute or not. Second, he said, Congress recognized that in the past, some victims of sexual assault may have been discharged from the service and given a discharge less than honorable. The FY15 NDAA directs that the service secretaries develop a confidential review process utilizing boards for the correction of military records to review the characterization of the discharge or separation of any individual who wants to
www.wiesbaden.army.mil ............................................................................Jan. 15, 2015
challenge the characterization of their discharge on the grounds that it was adversely affected by the individual being the victim of a sex-related offense. Finally, there are some congressionally appointed panels and a panel appointed by the defense secretary to study various aspects of sexual assault in the military and the military justice system in general, Kiel said. “Those panels have and will continue to make recommendations in an effort to continue to improve our system. It is important to note that the military remains cognizant of that fact and continues to seek ways to improve itself,” he said. “A number of the most significant reforms contained in the FY13, FY14 and FY15 NDAAs originated in the Department of Defense,” Kiel continued. “Congress codified them later. The military will continue to seek ways to improve how it handles the investigation and prosecution of sexual assault crimes and how it cares for the victims of such crimes. It will also remain vigilant in protecting the constitutional rights of the accused as it does so.”

Team members include: Oliver Stroh, Juergen Thieme, Klaus Schick, Andreas Leistler, Patrice Reinhard, Sgt. 1st Class Faustin Desir, Staff Sgt. Sean Noranbrock, Master Sgt. What is ‘winter safety’?
Soldiers from 5th Signal Command, 2nd Signal Brigade, 102nd Signal Battalion, USAG Wiesbaden and the 1st Military Intelligence Battalion tested their winter safety knowledge with a “Jeopardy”-style showdown hosted by the 5th Signal Command Dec. 16. Champlain Hollis, risk reduction coordinator, gave a briefing on the alcohol and substance abuse campaign, and the game format provided training on fire prevention, winter driving hazards, cold weather injury prevention and holiday safety. No translation was needed for the message conveyed by U.S. Army Europe Band and Chorus’ third annual holiday concert at the Wiesbaden Kurhaus Dec. 16. Music made the message clear: Thank you for your friendship, and may everyone enjoy the holiday spirit. “It is always important for us to know that we are welcome here,” said Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, U.S. Army Europe commanding general, in German. “You, the citizens of our German home communities, give our Soldiers and their families here in Germany a home far away from their native America.” The “musical ambassadors of Europe” performed a medley of holiday

“incomparable charm” that has “paved the way for many more opportunities,” and the band for “opening our ears and hearts so widely.” “We never forget what the American Soldiers and people did for us 70 years ago,” he added. The close relationship with the German community is what has enabled the success of the garrison, said Martin. “Just three weeks ago [Nov. 25] we sealed our new official partnership with the Landeskommando Hessen commanded by Brig. Gen. Klink,” she said. “This milestone is merely one example of the numerous partnerships that bind us to the towns around Clay Kaserne.” The USAREUR Band and Chorus is commanded by Lt. Col. Bruce Pulver and was originally activated in 1940. It is the Army’s third largest musical organization and the biggest outside of the United States.

Tread with care
Joe Cooper, manager of the Auto Skills Center, shows how a tire can be worn through. Winter brings frightful driving conditions. Stay prepared and safe with winter tires — German law mandates that vehicles have winter tires, marked by a snowflake logo or “M + S” symbol, which stands for mud and snow. The minimum legal tire tread depth is 1.6 millimeters, although winter driving experts recommend 4 millimeters. Tires should be put on by October 1 and remain until mid-spring, April 1. The fine for being caught without winter tires is €40 and one point on the driver’s license. If involved in an accident and the driver does not have winter tires, he or she is automatically at fault and fined €80. The Auto Skills Center is located on the north side of Wiesbaden Army Airfield at Clay Kaserne and offers seasonal tire changing service for $25. Sports and leisure Remembering olden times in Rothenburg ob der Trauber Story and photos by Shayna Brouker
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office
Entering the medieval walled city, your GPS will tell you to drive on through the arch — but surely the skinny cobblestone road isn’t accessible by car, so you turn right, looking for another entrance. Such is the experience that welcomes you to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany’s best-preserved medieval walled city situated along the Romantic Road in friendly Franconia, Bavaria’s northernmost region — new meets old. Known worldwide for its feudal charms, Rothenburg offers a look back in time and something for everyone. Just a few hours from Wiesbaden, it’s worth a visit. Rothenburg’s Christmas market, in 2014 held Nov. 28 through Dec. 23, is particularly enchanting. It begins that Friday evening with a poem read by the mayor in the main square and a man dressed in medieval garb riding up to the Christmas tree. The tree is lit, and the shopping begins. Stalls scattered throughout the winding streets offer high-quality, unique items such as Polish pottery Christmas ornaments, olivewood carvings and knickknacks, wool winter accessories and homemade oils and vinegars. In addition, the self-declared “ambassador of the German Christmas tradition,” Käthe Wohlfahrt, is headquartered in Rothenburg (and open almost year-round for Christmas lovers and those who want to get a head start on Christmas shopping). The Christmas Village and several stores are packed with handmade incense smokers, ornaments, knickknacks, decorations and more. There’s even a Christmas Market

museum. “I don’t travel from Berlin often, but Rothenburg is really special,” said a merchant selling woolen wares. “This Christmas market is one of the best.” In stark contrast to the quaint, cozy vibe of yuletide yearnings, the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum (Kriminalmuseum) grants visitors a taste of what fates would await them for misdemeanors such as being a quarrelsome woman, getting drunk or even being inept at one’s job. For example, bakers who baked bread loaves too small were often given a “baker’s baptism” and dunked in the river. The museum’s four floors house a collection of torture devices ranging from gruesome (limb stretchers) to funny (shame masks) to downright disturbing (chastity belts) and beautiful — bridal crowns from the Black Forest. Descriptions in English allow for full comprehension of the contraptions, and there are plenty of well-preserved texts and books that dictate how the punishment should fit the crime. Several wide-eyed children seemed to take note and were especially well-behaved. When you’re done gawking at shame masks and beds of nails, stroll up the main street Obere Schmiedgasse, chockfull of cozy cafes, antique stores and even a gem store. Refuel with some hearty Franconian fare. And don’t leave without walking along the wall for a view of the village — and back in time.

For your health Ready and Resilient ... Ready and Resilient
How to achieve your weight loss goals By Col. Joanna Reagan U.S. Army Public Health Command
January is the time of year when many people make a New Year's resolution to lose weight. Some people want to take off just a few pounds, while others may want to shed 30 pounds or more. So where can you find the inspiration to help you to drop more than 30 pounds and keep it off for more than a year? Read entries in the National Weight Control Registry, which contains stories of individuals who have done that and more. Currently, more than 10,000 individuals have shared their story in order to inspire and encourage others to accomplish their goals. Eighty percent of entries in the National Weight Control Registry are from women and 20 percent from men. The average participant lost 66 pounds and kept the extra weight off for 5.5 years. There are many differences in participants:

the participants. • Seventy-five percent weighed themselves at least once a week. The biggest connection between participants was that most developed a goal plan for weight loss. If your goal is to lose weight this year, here are suggestions to help you get started and create new goals for success. The Performance Triad is a three-pronged plan that everyone can use to improve his or her health. The Performance Triad goals are to promote sleep, activity and nutrition. Try something new. To modify your diet, make an appointment with a registered dietitian for personalized nutrition coaching sessions. Make an appointment at an Army Wellness Center to determine your resting metabolic rate and your current body composition. Purchase a digital fitness device to monitor how many steps you are walking and your hours of sleep. Many of these devices can be linked to your smartphone or to your computer to monitor your progress over time. Some programs and apps have a feature to help track your food intake and to see how many calories you expend and consume daily. A fitness device is a visual reminder to help you to add extra steps into your day. Try having a "walking meeting" with your co-workers or take the stairs up and down your building for a break. A healthy goal is to walk at least 10,000 steps per day. There are many apps to help you lose weight. Here is a site to help you determine the right app to download: www. eatright.org/Media/content. aspx?id=6442467041. To increase physical activity, try attending a new class such as Zumba, yoga, or bicycle spin class. Add strength training to your routine to increase your lean muscle and increase your resting metabolic rate. Make an
appointment with a personal fitness trainer to help set up a personalized workout program and for new ideas to add strength training to your routine. Many women lose muscle mass over time and replace the muscle with fat. For each pound of muscle you gain, you burn 35 to 50 more calories each day. Strength training, in combination with an adequate amount of calcium, also helps to defend against osteoporosis. Find a good friend who also wants to lose weight and set up a plan to work out together. Having someone as a "battle buddy" can be very helpful for holding each other accountable to maintain the workout routine. To help improve your nutrition, try these ideas. Pack a lunch and healthy snacks for work. By packing a lunch, you will save money and decrease portion sizes. You will be more likely to eat a healthy lunch too. When you pack your lunch, add extra fruit and vegetables to snack on for a mid-morning snack or an afternoon break. You should also add extra vegetables with your evening meal. Consider the sugar in your beverages and try not to drink any with high fructose corn syrup. Limit your snacks after your evening meal, as they tend to be high in sugar and fat. Sleep is also an integral part of losing weight. Inadequate amounts of sleep increases the appetite hormones leading to increased appetite and increased food intake. Having a regular sleep cycle and achieving 7-8 hours of sleep each night can make a difference with performance and losing weight. The goal of the new year should focus on health and wellness and if your goal is to lose weight, try some new strategies. Incorporate the performance triad concepts into your daily life and invite a friend to help you stick to your goals.

The story follows the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British who travels to London in search of a home.
Strange Magic,” is a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by “A Midsummer Night's Dream.” Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and Industrial Light & Magic bring to life the fanciful forest turned upside down with world-class animation and visual effects.
The Wedding Ringer (R) — In “The Wedding Ringer,” Jimmy provides best man services for socially challenged guys, who — for whatever reason — have no one close enough to agree to stand by them on the day of their wedding. Doug a groom-to-be, has found himself in just such a situation, but, to make matters worse, he fabricates the names of not only a best man but nine groomsmen as well. When all else fails, Doug seeks out Jimmy’s services to carry out a charade designed to make Doug look his best, but threatens to destroy everything if it fails. American Sniper (R) — U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname “Legend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to “leave no one behind.” But upon returning to his wife, Taya (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind. Paddington (PG) — Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined — until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck — "Please look after this bear. Thank you." — and offers him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist. Blackhat (R) — Follows a reformed, hottempered bounty hunter who finds his new harmonious life as a fugitive recovery agent threatened when he must assist a colleague track down her eccentric brother who is part of a group of hackers before they are captured by the FBI or assassinated by a rival bounty killer. Meanwhile, they attempt to prevent a massive viral attack created by a talented hacker that could collapse America’s economic foundation. The Boy Next Door (R) — Jennifer Lopez stars as a newly separated mother who begins an affair with a new teenage neighbor who befriends her son. Trouble ensues, however, when she tries to abruptly end the relationship.

Speyer hosts Titanic exhibition
Photos by Premier Exhibitions Inc, illustration on top by Shutterstock.com
Visitors can explore historical facts, original objects from the bottom of the sea and the reconstruction of several areas of the ship.
The Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer presents “Titanic — The Exhibition: Real Discoveries, True Fates,” until June 28. The main attractions of this exhibition are the almost 250 original artifacts that have been, through a series of deep sea expeditions, salvaged from the seabed. These objects include personal belongings of the passengers, furnishings and equipment of the ship and parts of the doomed ship itself. Alongside these original objects, lavish stagings and reconstructions of ship compartments invite visitors into an impressive journey of discovery of a bygone era. Exhibitions regarding this subject have previously been held in Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels. Speyer is, however, the first German venue for this newly arranged exhibition, which displays original objects taken from the Titanic’s wreckage. Starting with a consideration of the world around the year 1900, major aspects of this exhibition include the presentation of the construction of the ship, its furnishings and equipment, as well as content devoted to the class differences of the passengers on board, the series of events that occurred leading to its disastrous demise and the manner in which, years later, the objects presented in this exhibition were salvaged from the seabed. Additionally, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate devotes part of the exhibition to the biographies of the German passengers on board as well as to the circumstances that have

led to the unprecedented myth, which persists to his day, surrounding the doom of this supposedly unsinkable ship. Still, today, over 100 years after its doomed maiden voyage, the name of this ship is at once synonymous with inconceivable tragedy and a sustained shock to humanity’s belief in almighty technology. After considerable research, it was only in 1985 that the location of the shattered wreck could be pinpointed. In the course of many expeditions, carried out between 1987 and 2010, many relics of this catastrophe were salvaged and brought up from the seabed 3,800 meters below sea level. Besides the presentation of pieces of the actual ship, such as rivets, lamps and tiles, accouterments, such as tableware and glassware, as well as private objects, such as personal papers, jewelry and personal body care products, are all on show at this exhibition. An accompanying booklet is available for this exhibition. During the course of this exhibition, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Further information pertaining to this exhibition and its considerable accompanying program can be found at www.titanic-dieausstellung.de. (Information provided by Historical Museum of the Palatinate)
First class cabins on the Titanic were equipped with luxury. The two most expensive suites had two bedrooms, two dresser rooms, a living room, a bathroom with toilet and a private sun deck
Each visitor of the exhibition receives a boarding pass to retrace the individual destiny of a passenger.

Fresh air, culinary specialties and fine, red wines are what visitors can expect Jan. 23 to 25 during Freinsheim’s red wine hike, according to organizers. The annual red wine hike in wine growing community of Freinsheim is known as the first highlight of the year in the Palatine vineyards. The event will start at 6 p.m. Jan. 23 with a torch hike leading from the town hall along the wine hiking path to a vineyard called “Musikantenbuckel.” Interested participants will meet near the Baroque town hall that dates back to 1732. Torches will be available near the town hall and at a winery near the train station. On Jan. 24 and 25, guided tours will start at 11:30 a.m. at the historical town hall. Wine Princess Anne II and a local music group will welcome hikers who want to join the guided tours. On all three days of the event, local vintners will present various red wines, such as Dornfelder, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Saint Laurent and Spätburgunder, in their wineries and at stands. To be able to warm up in this cold weather, Glühwein (heated, red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon sticks) will also be served. During the event, visitors can taste a variety of food specialties, including potato
soup with dampfnudeln, meat dumplings with horseradish sauce, potato dumplings with mushrooms, bratwurst, grilled ham, cheese spätzle with red wine onions, goulash soup, pea soup, fresh oysters and scampis with spaghetti. Desserts will include chocolate cake with red wine plums, red wine cake and red wine muffins. Food and beverage stands will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. Jan. 23, and 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 24 and 25. The Freinsheim soccer club will sponsor a 10-kilometer folks run starting at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 25 in the Oschelkopf vineyard. Interested runners can register online at www. br-timing.de. Starting fee costs €5. An extra €3 will be charged for those registering after Jan. 24. Freinsheim has a medieval ring wall that dates back to the 15th century. The wall surrounds the old part of town with towers and gates. It is known as one of the nicest and most complete town fortification facilities in the Pfalz. For visitors, it’s worth a visit just to explore. Walking tours around the town wall, which take about an hour, are also available. For more information on the city and the red wine hike, visit www.stadt-freinsheim.de.
