Mousetrap car race brings community, schools together By Karl Weisel

Young engineers took on the community at large during this year’s Mousetrap Car Showdown at Wiesbaden Middle School Dec. 6. Some 20 teams including middle school seventh- and eighth-graders, home-schoolers and members of units and organizations from around the garrison took part in the second annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Math community-school partnership program race final. “Last year was such a success that Peter (Peter Witmer, Wiesbaden’s school liaison officer) thought about expanding it,” said Carlos Tana, a program assistant with U.S.Army Garrison Wiesbaden Child and Youth Services. “The key was that we saw the success of the program last year and looked at how we

could make it even more exciting for the students — both from a mentorship standpoint and as an actual competitive experience for all of those involved,” Witmer said. “Many of the community participants were very eager to enter and had a lot of enthusiasm.” “This is just another example of how Youth Services and the schools partner throughout the year to encourage Science, Technology, Engineering and Math programs among our youth,” said Aaron Chapuis, CYS youth program director. As teams battled their way through the preliminary rounds with their mousetrap-powered vehicles it quickly became evident that some teams used more STEM know-how and ingenuity than others to construct their cars. DoD announces new discharge outreach efforts

committed to rectifying errors or injustices and treating all veterans with dignity and respect.

DoD News

Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON — On Dec. 30, the Department of Defense announced a renewed effort to ensure veterans are aware of the opportunity to have their discharges and military records reviewed. Through enhanced public outreach, engagement with Veterans Service Organizations, Military Service Organizations, and other outside groups, as well as direct outreach to individual veterans, the department encourages all veterans who believe they have experienced an error or injustice to request relief from their service’s Board for Correction of Military/ Naval Records or Discharge Review Board. Additionally, all veterans, VSOs, MSOs, and other interested organizations are invited to offer feedback on their experiences with the BCM/NR or DRB processes, including how the policies and processes can be improved. In the past few years, the department has issued guidance for consideration of posttraumatic stress disorder, as well as the repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and its predecessor policies. Supplemental guidance for separations involving victims of sexual assault is being considered. The department is reviewing and consolidating all of the related policies to reinforce the department’s commitment to ensuring fair and equitable review of separations for all veterans. Whether the discharge or other correction is the result of PTSD, sexual orientation, sexual assault, or some other consideration, the department is

Cyclists on electric-powered bikes are allowed to use bike paths when an “E-Bikes erlaubt” sign is present. The law applies for paths out-oftown and within the city limits. Parents or guardians must accompany children with bicycles on sidewalks. Previously, adults had to use the street while the child was required to ride on the sidewalk. Children eight years and up can choose to ride on the street with an adult or use a designated bicycle path. Cyclists must follow automobile traffic lights now and not pedestrian signals unless they are on a designated bike path.

Continued from page 1 Claire Lewis, Kylie Ann Ferguson and Tia Justice dominated the seventh-grade field. “My absolute favorite group leading up to the competition was who I called my ‘Dream Team,’” said Tana, “and it turned out they were the winning seventh-grade group. There was something about these four young ladies working together that I hadn’t seen in the other 40 groups. These ladies showed great aptitude as they were building their mousetrap car together – and even better chemistry as a team.” A team made up of Jerrel Probst, Sam Houston, Kylie Reardon and Thomas Fiorenza won bragging rights for the eighth grade, taking home first place in their final. Then it was time for the schoolcommunity showdown with the two winning middle school teams facing off against teams from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District, and the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade. “I’m glad to say the seventh- and eighth-graders were only a couple of seconds behind the winning car,” said Tana, explaining that it took three heats for the 66th MI car to claim first place over the Corps of Engineers team in the championship round. “This activity is such a boost to our DoDEA-Europe STEM initiative and what we are trying to accomplish with our new College and Career Ready standards,” said Dr. Dell McMullen, Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe Kaiserslautern District superintendent. “The community support and the partnership with the Teen Center truly enhance the work the school is doing every day and extend the classroom into the community. Dell, who was on hand in Wiesbaden to observe the Mousetrap Car Championship, added, “The Wiesbaden community and units supporting this event

It forces kids to think outside of the box,” he said, adding, “In engineering you can get to different results in different ways.” Karen Seitz, director of the Clay Youth Center, said she appreciates having the opportunity to promote STEM activities within the center and to complement what students are learning in school. “It just gives the kids more opportunities for learning.” Seitz also underscored the importance of encouraging students to reflect the lessons of Character Counts which mirror the Army’s Values. A grant from the Boys and Girls Clubs of America helped provide a variety of STEM materials including a facilitator guide, instructions for experiments and supplies used throughout the year at the Wiesbaden Youth Centers. “I think the main take-away is that programs like these make STEM come

Three kings deliver New Year’s blessing By Nadine Bower

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs

Do not be alarmed if your doorbell rings on Jan. 6 and you find a group of children and young adults dressed in colorful robes and singing songs in German. This group is part of a long-standing German tradition called “Sternsinger” or Star Singers that reaches back to Medieval times. People would go from house to house to collect small donations during the hard winter months. Nowadays, on the Feast of the Epiphany, youth from local Catholic churches or youth organizations will dress up as the Holy Three Kings, also known as the Three Wise Men — a group of distinguished foreigners who visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The Sternsingers visit can vary depending on the German city or town, but will usually take place on Jan. 6 or 7. The group will carry a star representing the one followed by the biblical Magi, while they wander from house to house to sing a carol and deliver the New Year’s blessing. They will then write the initials 20+C+M+B+17 on or above the doorway in chalk and say a protective prayer for the house and its occupants. Although the initials traditionally stand for the names of the three wise men, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, they are also known to stand for “Christus Mansionem Benedicat” (“May/Let Christ Bless This House”). It is tradition to donate small amounts of money to the Sternsinger, which typically goes towards a charitable association for children.

DeCA selects private label supplier Defense Commissary Agency Release FORT LEE, Va. — The Defense Commissary Agency has selected MDV SpartanNash LLC to bring private label products to store shelves. “Our customers have been asking for private label for a long time,” said Joseph H. Jeu, DeCA’s director and CEO, citing a DeCA patron survey in which 60 percent of respondents said they would like to see a commissary private label offering. “They are smart, savvy shoppers who know that private label products are cost-effective alternatives to national brands. We’re excited to help them save more at our commissaries.” Private label products are offered by a retailer under its own, in-house brand or under a brand developed by

its suppliers. Retailers are able to do this by working directly with suppliers. Commissaries will add private label options to their assortments, while continuing to offer the name brands that patrons have always shopped. DeCA conducted a rigorous selection process to identify the right supplier. “Throughout the process,

our goal was to find a partner that could provide quality products to our patrons at a savings level that is equivalent to or better than what they find from private label products at commercial grocers,” Jeu said. Over the next several months, DeCA will work closely with SpartanNash to decide on an initial assortment of products to introduce. The initial assortment should be available at all commissaries worldwide in May and will include about 400 items. Private label items will continue to grow to about 1,000 items by the end of 2017. Over the next two years, DeCA will continue to add more private label products to the commissary stock assortment. For more information on DeCA’s private label program, read the Transformation FAQs at www.commissaries.com.

Soldiers bring holiday cheer to local children BOSS delivers toys, smiles By Emily Jennings U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs

A group of Soldiers made the holidays a little happier for kids at a Mainz hospital last month when they delivered bags full of toys to little girls and boys getting treatment there, Dec. 7. Eight Soldiers from U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers collected and distributed new toys donated by the community for the patients at the Children’s Cancer Ward at the Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. The BOSS members hoped the toys would give the patients a little something to cheer them up while receiving treatment for cancer and other illnesses. The trip to the hospital had an impact on Spc. Lashene Zander, a BOSS volunteer. “It means a lot to me because my mom had cancer,” she said. “There were a lot of smiles, especially from the parents.” “I felt like Santa,” said Pfc. Mercedes Holm, BOSS representative who described the experience as humbling and rewarding. Spc. Bruce

Wang, also a BOSS representative, appreciated that the Soldiers got to talk to some of the staff about the joys and challenges of their jobs at the hospital. And everyone loved seeing the children light up when they received their toys. BOSS received so many items during their toy drive that they were able to give more than one item to every child, Zander said. Wiesbaden community support of the BOSS program was key to the event’s success. “The BOSS Team would like to give a special thank you to all of the individuals who helped make the trip to the hospital successful. We were able to brighten the day of at least 30 children suffering from cancer, said Sgt. Helen Buford. Buford said the event meant a lot to BOSS as well as the children and their families. “The look on the children’s faces as we walked into the rooms with the boxes of toys is a humbling experience and would not have been possible if it weren’t for all of the involvement that we had from the community,” she said.

66th MI Soldiers visit orphanage Story and photos by Emily Jennings

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs

‘Tis the season for giving and receiving as Soldiers with the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade recently discovered during a community outreach event at a local orphanage. Soldiers with the 66th MI held a 5k fun run and toy drive to collect items to distribute to children at the Jugendhilfeverbund Antoniusheim in Wiesbaden. Col. Devon Blake, commander of the 66th MI, got the event started by saying a few words in German to introduce herself and the Soldiers. Through nervous smiles, many of the teenagers, age 13 to 19, responded using a few words in English as well. “Their willingness to speak English was so impressive. It showed a lot of personal courage, in that for some of them that was their third or fourth language,” Blake said. After introductions it was a game of basketball that really brought the two cultures together as the Soldiers and teenagers went outside to test out some of the new basketballs. “The children seemed to be more concerned about a relationship, and not so much about the toys and the gifts,” said Lt. Col. Brian Cunningham. The toys were a hit, but

Teen residents were all smiles as Chaplain Lt. Col. Suk Kim (far right) passes out gifts Dec. 15 at the Jugendhilfeverbund Antoniusheim orphanage. the real gift was the chance to meet and learn about American Soldiers over a friendly game of basketball. “It really brought joy to my heart just to see the kids smiling and having a good time,” said Spc. Daoud Rahman who said he would be interested in fostering a continued relationship with the orphanage. The Soldiers expressed delight at how much the teens were willing to share. “I liked that they were very open,” Pfc. Jerani Smith said. It gave everyone an opportunity to get to know one another and fostered the desire to plan another get together. “I appreciated learning a little bit about their backgrounds and where they came from, and I hope that we can continue this relationship in the future,” Blake said.

www.wiesbaden.army.mil ............................................................................. Jan. 5, 2017

One of the questions the children had for Blake was about her philosophy on leadership. “It’s a combination of discipline and love,” she explained. Working with kids, doing good and the concept of selfless service was what it was all about. “The opportunity was great because it extends our mission beyond warfighting, so you get to actually get out in the community and make a positive impact, especially on these young kids,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Roseberry. Despite the age gap and language and cultural barriers, the Soldiers and teens connected leaving with a better understanding of one another. Blake thanked the orphanage for the opportunity to give back, build friendships and serve the community.

Soldiers participate in mountain warfare course By Staff Sgt. Anthony Johnson U.S. Army Europe

U.S. Army paratroopers assigned to 2nd Battalion 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade and Allies from six nations took part in a German Mountain Warfare Course in Seinsbach Gorge, Mittenwald, Germany, from Dec. 5 to 16, 2016. During the course Soldiers trained on task such as conducting patrols in a mountainous environment, resting in a snow shelter, rock climbing and roping down a rock face. Developing these types of skills produces specially trained mountain troops that increases each participating nation capabilities. European landscape is full of mountainous terrain, where this type of training becomes essential to ground forces. Small forces of mountain troops can prevent, impede, harass, or channel the movements of enemy forces, so that

Developing military capabilities in Europe By Jim Garamone Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON — Military capabilities matter more than just numbers. U.S. commanders around the world want to get away from a discussion of numbers of troops, and talk about capabilities. But developing the military capabilities is a long-term process and requires the correct doctrine, the best equipment and right training. The U.S. military is the best in the world today. The hard-won lessons from 15 years of war have been learned for the counterinsurgency fight, but the combined arms and joint skills needed for a fight against a near-peer adversary have atrophied. The U.S. military requires these full-spectrum capabilities, because with them lies full-spectrum deterrence.

Full-Spectrum Operations

Nowhere is that full-spectrum need more acute than in Europe. Russia has invested significant money in its military and its actions betray its intent. Russia threatens Georgia and has annexed Crimea. It continues to threaten Ukraine. Russia’s actions are seen as a threat to the eastern flank of NATO, with the front-line states — Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria — particularly worried. The United States is absolutely committed to the defense of NATO, and that means having full-spectrum capabilities not only within U.S. forces, but with NATO and partner nations as well. The 7th Army Training Command in Grafenwoehr, Germany, is one of those places where capabilities are built.

U.S. tankers fire the main gun of an Abrams tank during exercise Combined Resolve VII at the 7th Army Training Command in Grafenwoehr, Germany, in August 2016. Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in February 2014 changed the face of Europe, and was a wake-up call about Russian intentions.

Changed Atmosphere

This carried over into the military domain. “It has changed the way things are happening, it’s changed the partnership and the way allies are working together, and we have walked into a very unique time as we are on the cusp of not only training our forces, but the alliance” at Grafenwoehr, said Army Brig. Gen. Tony Aguto, the commander of 7th Army Training Command. Since the end of World War II, U.S. forces have used the German training areas at Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels and Vilseck. “That all still happens,” Aguto said. “But now it happens with a NATO flavor.” Since 2014, every exercise done at

the ranges — be they firing exercises at Grafenwoehr or maneuvers at Hohenfels — are with other NATO nations or partner nations. There are 28 nations in NATO and they need to act together to counter any threats. This means the nations’ militaries must be able to operate as one. NATO’s experiences in Afghanistan certainly helped this interoperability, but it is now being carried into a new realm of warfare. “In many cases, the best [exercises] are when a Latvian or Pole or Estonian commands a U.S. battalion, and we have those at least twice a year,” Aguto said.

NATO Partners

All of the NATO partners come here wanting to learn and they are motivated, the general said. “There are always gaps, whether it is technology or training, but by the time they finish a rotation or a training event, most of those gaps have been closed and they walk away not only with a better trained force, but a list of requirements they need to work on or technology they need to invest in, as do we,” he said. Last summer, a total of 45,000 service members used the command’s training facilities. Aguto expects at least the same amount this coming year. The base was a major training area for U.S. Army Europe, back when there were 350,000 Americans in West Germany, alone. The base can handle it, the general said. But the training is more complicated and more interwoven and more international than ever before. In addition, elements of the training are tied together via the Internet. “The Joint Multinational Simulation Center is here, which allows us to connect training between Graf and Hohenfels, and also connect to a higher headquarters,” Aguto said.

Multinational Training

One recent example, he said, shows the complicated this can get. A Lithuanian brigade was operating at the training area. With the brigade in Germany were Czech, Romanian, Belgian, American and Polish units. All of these were linked to another brigade training in Lithuania. That unit has British units attached. And all of these were under command of a California National Guard division. The quality of training has improved significantly, and the command is making full use of simulations in combination with its live-fire ranges, Aguto said. The command is not limited to Graf and Hohenfels. The command is also responsible for training Ukrainian soldiers in the western part of that country and — with the Marines — training Georgian soldiers. And the command is a learning organization, the general said. It takes in everything learned from Russian information operations, electronic warfare, artillery and “those lessons learned come back into the system and get fed right back into the training environment,” Aguto said. Next year will be another busy year for the command. In July, U.S. Army Europe is sponsoring Exercise Saber Guardian. While still in the planning stages, the exercise will test continentwide response. In February 2017, Exercise Dynamic Front II begins. That exercise will highlight fires systems and test the ability of several nations’ militaries to work together. Nearly 1,300 troops from nine countries will train together under the command of the 82nd Airborne Division’s division artillery.

Wiesbaden’s Sports, Fitness and Outdoor Recreation Center offers a wealth of holistic programs and services aimed at helping community members improve their overall health and fitness. While workouts, classes and sporting events are on most people’s radar, some may be missing the benefits of the center’s Massage Therapy Program. “Our main focus is on the mental and physical benefits of massage,” said Amanda Moser, one of three licensed therapists at the fitness center who offer a range of massages from deep tissue to hot stone, sports to pregnancy massages. “Massage Therapy is proven to be helpful with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, stress and other mental and physical health issues.” “They have done many case studies showing that people who get regular massages — at least once a month — have fewer physical and mental health issues,” said Ruth Douglas, a certified massage therapist who hails from Arizona. “I do a lot of sports therapy — working with clientele who are recovering from injuries,” Douglas

said, adding, “We treat every person as an individual — no one is exactly the same. Massage is beneficial for everybody — anyone from an infant to a person who is 90 years old.” Moser, who owned her own Massage Therapy business in Utah before coming to Europe to work with service members and their families, said she’s had “many success stories” — helping athletes cope with injury issues, individuals deal with chronic back and shoulder pain, and Soldiers decrease their anxiety levels and depression following traumatic incidents. “My goal was to end up here in Europe and to work with Soldiers to better their lives,” Moser said. “We treat the client, depending on his or her symptoms, in an efficient and safe way,” said Bob Karnes, a licensed practitioner who began his career in Reno, Nev., in 1980. “We complement what the doctors do.” Finding the appropriate Massage Therapy to meet an individual’s needs is important, Karnes said, explaining that the three members of the team share a wealth of experience. “It’s not a cookie-cutter approach,” said Moser. “We have different specialties.”

“Massage Therapy is definitely a form of preventive medicine,” said Douglas, pointing out that everyone can benefit — especially combining massage with regular exercise and healthy eating habits. Moser also recommended that people shouldn’t wait until they are suffering before seeking assistance. “We have an overall wellness program in this facility” and the professionals at the fitness center will work with individuals to “create an overall wellness program for them.” Community members can get an introduction to what Massage Therapy can offer every Wednesday at the fitness center during lunch time from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — 15 minutes for $15 per session — after stopping by the front desk to sign up for a session. “We have beautiful massage rooms,” said Douglas, each one a little different in its decor and appeal. Debunking the concept of ‘fat-burning zone’ By Health.mil You’ve probably seen those colorful charts on exercise machines at the gym, showing your ideal heart rate zone for optimal fat burn. Is this “zone” the best way to burn fat? The concept of the “fat-burning zone” might not be entirely true. Many people assume that in order to burn fat, they must keep their heart rate within the defined range. This can be misleading for a few reasons. First, people’s heart rates are very different, making it difficult to generalize recommendations from a fixed chart. Second, your body burns two main sources of energy during exercise: fats and carbohydrates. (Protein is an energy source, but it’s only used in very small amounts.) For any given heart rate, your body will burn both carbohydrates and fats; however, the proportion of each will vary. Low-intensity exercises (lower heart rate) with a longer duration (30 minutes or more) mostly rely on fat for energy. So, there’s a zone in which a higher proportion of fat is being used for energy, but that doesn’t necessarily mean more fat is being burned. Your body actually gets most of its energy from fat during rest. In theory, your ultimate “fat-burning zone” is in your living room: you lying on your couch, binge-watching your favorite new series. So, how do you burn more fat? High-

Doing high intensity exercises is a better way to burn fat than monitoring heart rate due to the higher overall energy expenditure. intensity exercises actually burn the most fat due to the higher overall energy (caloric) expenditure. The 7th Army Training Command’s Joint Multinational Simulation Center (JMSC) hosted a command post exercise (CPX) Dec. 7 to 9, 2016, in Grafenwoehr, Germany, with three different brigade-level units at the same time — not just training the individual command staffs on their own battle rhythms, but also, how they interact with each other when they focus on a unified mission. A CPX is a commander-driven exercise focused on a unit’s functional and technical capabilities, requiring external support to replicate higher, lower and adjacent units. The training audience is usually one brigade- or battalion-level unit. JMSC scaled up the CPX and focused on a different level of competitiveness said Andy Holland, an exercise planner with JMSC, adding that the larger CPX forced commanders to think about communication and movement in a real-world timeframe

and also, how to interact with other brigade-level commanders. “What it does is add a lot more levels of complexity to the controlling of the exercise and the development of the exercise, because we’re looking at three separate commanders trying to meet their training objectives,” said Armando Riveron, the JMSC lead planner for this exercise, who was working from Vicenza. Units used existing tactical communication systems, but pushed JMSC’s capabilities to span the geography of the battle space — a footprint encompassing parts of Germany and Italy: the 173rd Airborne Brigade from Vicenza, Italy; and the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and 18th Military Police Brigade, both stationed here. Additionally, U.S. Army Europe served as the higher command out of Wiesbaden, Germany. “Our job is to create a training environment that they can work in and try to get better” said Riveron. “If we can look back and say, ‘yes,

we hit every single training objective,’ and ‘we’ve stimulated every training objective,’ I think we’re a success.” A CPX is a training tool that is necessary to keep Soldiers battle-ready, and Holland said JMSC is reinforcing mission command and using the same systems units would use every day on an actual mission. “We are losing the ability to control multiple brigade operations,” said Maj. Shane Mantz, an Army reservist with 75th Training Command, who is supporting 173rd Airborne Brigade as an Observer Coach Trainer, or OCT. “We’re not exercising those muscles, and it is a big leap for a major command staff to understand how to interface with the folks on the ground who need the assets that are available.” That’s what JMSC sought to do with this CPX, and it’s a tasking that Holland takes seriously. “There’s nowhere else in Europe to do this,” Holland said. “This is the place.”

News and features More women than expected joining combat arms By Sean Kimmons Army New Service

WASHINGTON — Full gender integration in the Army is exceeding expectations with now over 300 women successfully recruited or transferred into the service’s most physically demanding career fields, according to senior leaders. Earlier this year, the Army opened up about 138,000 positions once closed off to women in the infantry, armor, field artillery and Special Forces. “This is about identifying a Soldier or applicant who is capable of doing a job to standard regardless of gender,” said Maj. Gen. Hugh Van Roosen II, the Army’s deputy G-1. “For us, this means opening up some of the hardest jobs in the Army to all the talent pool that’s out there and not cutting ourselves off from 50 percent of the population.” The influx of females interested in combat arms has surprised Roosen and others who expected to see half that number of women by this time after the defense secretary approved the Army’s implementation plan in March. “This is a real success story,” he told representatives of military and veteran service organizations who were visiting the Pentagon on Wednesday. “This has gone far better than we anticipated.” Now in its third phase, the integration plan, also known as Soldier 2020, is placing female infantry and armor officers in operational units at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Fort Hood, Texas. The fourth and final phase will sustain and optimize integration efforts once the Army reaches full operational capability and re-validates screening requirements for jobs in combat arms. Small cohorts of female and male

Members of a fully gender integrated Armor Basic Officer Leader Course take a break during a maneuver exercise at Good Hope Training Area, Fort Benning, Ga., Nov. 16, 2016. The first 13 female armor officers graduated from the course Dec. 1, 2016. Female interest in combat arms has exceeded expectations, with more than 300 women successfully recruited or transferred into the service’s most physically demanding career fields. officers are currently being trained together and assigned to the same company as a way to gradually adjust the culture in male-dominated units before female enlisted Soldiers begin to graduate this summer. “We’re going to break stereotypes,” Roosen said. “We keep that up … until we determine the climate and culture has sufficiently changed to normalize processes and get back to business as usual.” A majority of the women within the program — over 260 — are part of the infantry and armor fields. Of them, less than 30 are serving in the reserve component.

Unlike the regular Army, where active-duty troops can be placed at any base, the Army National Guard is figuring out how to deal with its positions that are based on vacancies. One way the Guard hopes to offer guidance to females enlisted in combat arms is to have female officers serving nearby in other career fields be a leader to them, Roosen said. Initial data of fully integrated training at Fort Benning, Georgia — where infantry and armor courses are held — has shown no significant difference between male and female student performance. “The female attrition rate is lower or the same as men,” Roosen said. “These are women who are physically fit and

absolutely prepared for this.” The Army has also conducted several studies to decrease injury and attrition rates among all trainees. The Occupational Physical Assessment Test, which rolls out to the entire service Jan. 3, was developed as a result of the findings. The new test has gender neutral tasks including a standing long jump, a dead lift, an interval run and a seated power throw to measure strength needed for tasks such as loading ammunition. Those who score in the highest physical category, among other qualifications, will be allowed to work any job in combat arms, Roosen said. As of now, there’s no cap on how many women can serve in combat arms and Roosen doesn’t believe there should be one. “This isn’t about gender, this is about capability,” he said. “We don’t really care what the gender is.” The general does believe the U.S.Army could have a larger percentage of women in combat arms compared to the Canadian army, which was used as a model when developing the gender integration plan. Canadian women have served in combat arms for 30 years, but commissioned and enlisted females only make up about 2 percent and .5 percent, respectively, of that army’s infantry, according to Roosen. “We will probably do better than the Canadian model,” he said. “Time will tell what the long-term propensities will look like.” What the general does know for certain is that having women in the Army’s toughest jobs will greatly benefit readiness. “We’re getting after the best Soldiers we can,” he said. “This will give our Army capability that we’ve not had before on several levels, and it will make us a better Army.”

NATO language seminar fosters working together By Christine June Army.mil

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany — Chief of testing, Maj. Khayal Iskandar traveled more than 2,000 miles from Azerbaijan to make sure that he and his 30 employees know how to teach their students to communicate in English to NATO standards. “We base all of our English language programs on NATO standards,” said Iskandar, chief of testing at the newlyestablished Foreign Language and Partnership Training Cen-

ter at the Military War College in Baku. “All of our teachers should be involved in these type of courses so they are able to have a clear picture of what they need to do to prepare students for exams.” Iskandar and 11 classmates from nine countries graduated from the Language Standards and Assessment Seminar Dec. 8 at the Marshall Center. “This 10-day seminar is a highly interactive seminar that familiarizes experienced language teachers and language program managers with the NATO standards for language

proficiency,” said Roxanne Harrison, program manager at the English Language Programs Department of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies’ Partner Language Training Center, Europe. “It also introduces them to sound principles of language testing process to improve student learning, make better assessments of student progress and improve the design of classroom lessons in their home nations’ language training programs.” Jerry Nowers, head contingency of the Defence Centre

for Languages and Culture for the Defence Academy in the United Kingdom, was the lead facilitator for this iteration. “The LSAS is designed primarily to familiarize our international participants with NATO standards and introduces them to principles of testing and assessments, which they can take back to improve their own and their nation’s processes,” Nowers said. These language standards were implemented in NATO as a standardization agreement in 1976 for language standards in the armed forces and language

exams, said Harrison. Through its English Language Programs Department, PLTCE is an officially-recognized NATO Partnership Training and Education Center that offers workshops and seminars for English teaching and testing professionals from NATO and partner nations. PLTCE works closely with the Bureau for International Language Coordination, which is NATO’s advisory body on language training and testing, to provide professional development for language testers, trainers and managers, said Harrison.

This year, resolve to set wellness resolutions that you can keep By Lisa Cox

Army Wellness Center

2017 is finally here and in full swing. For many people, the New Year is the time for a fresh start, a clean slate, or a personal change. While over half of Americans will set some sort of New Year’s resolution, less than half are found to be successful in keeping the resolution throughout the year. Those who made healthrelated resolutions note lack of will-power, increase in stress, and lack of support as major barriers to successful change. The American Psychological Association suggests that the New Year isn’t a time to make a sweeping character change, but rather to reflect on the past year and promise to make or continue a positive lifestyle change. Sometimes, in order to change your behavior, you first have to change your way of thinking. “Just because it is a new year doesn’t mean you have to set a new goal. Maybe your resolution is something you have already started working towards,” said Lisa Fisher, a health educator at the Wiesbaden Army Wellness Center. “It’s important to remember wellness is holistic. Eating healthier or exercising more can help with weight loss, but it can also boost energy levels, improve sleep quality, and reduce stress. Consider all the ways your efforts may be improving your health.” The Army Wellness Center offers a few tips to ensure your wellness resolutions are a success: ● Start Small – Aim to set a resolution you can keep. Many people quit their resolution because it is too big, or too much at once. If you are looking to eat more vegetables, start with a specific goal of one more serving a day. Once your goal is easily attainable, you can increase the caliber of change. ● Celebrate milestones –

Successful wellness resolutions begin with personal expectation management. Give yourself credit for completing “mile marker goals”. ● One change at a time – Developing an unhealthy habit takes time, just as developing a healthy habit or healthy change will. Don’t overwhelm yourself with the “all or none” mindset. ● Give yourself a break – You’re human, and therefore, not perfect. Understand that you may slip up, but do not give up on yourself after one mistake. If you’re sick and had to skip the gym for a week, push through. Motivate yourself to push forward! ● Talk to someone – Don’t be afraid to share your experiences with friends or family. They can be your biggest asset and support system. You may even inspire someone else to make a change. ● Ask for help – This community is full of experts just waiting to help you meet your goals. From Behavioral Health, to the Fitness Center, to the Army Wellness Center, the Wiesbaden community is full of subject matter experts who can help from beginning of your journey and throughout the year.

Sing — Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (Academy Award® winner Matthew McConaughey), a dapper Koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Buster is an eternal optimist — okay, maybe a bit of a scoundrel — who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it. Now facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

Movie plots Underworld: BloodWars — The epic struggle between the Lycan werewolf clan and theVampire clan that has vowed to eradicate them continues in this stylish and moody fifth installment. Hidden Figures — As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of AfricanAmerican female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women, known as “human computers”, we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history’s greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes. La La Land — In this modern take on the Hollywood musical from Damien Chazelle, the Academy Award-nominated writer and director of Whiplash, Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) are drawn together by their common desire to do what they love. But as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.

EXPERIENCE AN AUTHENTIC SWISS FONDUE DINNER!

ons / Shutterstock

.com

Have you ever driven to Switzerland just to have a fondue dinner? Only the crazy people will say, “well, yes I have.” Consider me one of the crazies! Our recent family road trip put us in the vicinity of Switzerland. And by “in the vicinity”, I mean a 6-hour road trip from Austria. Road Trip We likely could have gotten there in 4 hours, but we stopped several times to take pictures of the beautiful scenery. My family was visiting from Georgia and wanted to experience an authentic Swiss fondue dinner. Who am I to disappoint? So, Zurich was added to our list and off we went. We arranged an overnight stay at a local apartment we found on airbnb, which was just a quick tram ride from Zurich’s Old Town. Dining A google search of “best fondue in Zurich” would lead us to the restaurant Le Dezaley, which was

the number 1 fondue restaurant on Trip Advisor. I am ashamed to tell you exactly how much we paid for this dinner. As you may have heard, Switzerland in general has some high price tags. Let us just say that we ate like royalty. Zurich The city of Zurich lies at the northern end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque streets of Old Town on either side of the Limmat River reflect its pre-medieval history. We had exactly 18 hours to enjoy as much as we could see. After check-in, we immediately found the tram and headed to Old Town. Spectacular Views A 15-minute walk along the river brought us to our culinary destination. We were so hungry and focused on getting to the restaurant that we probably did not appreciate the beauty of Zurich at night, as we should have. We did manage to get a few pic-

tures and as I looked through them after our return, I was a bit disappointed that we did not spend more time just strolling along the river. Of course, after eating that much delicious fondue, we were all just ready to go to bed. So, we made plans to call it a night and wake up bright and early to take on day two. Felsenegg Cable Car Second to fondue on our request list was a cable car ride. The only cable car in Zurich is Felsenegg. It is located a little less than five miles to the south of Zurich. Due to its proximity to Zurich, it is a very popular destination. Lucky for us, we arrived early so we were practically the only guests. Felsenegg includes a restaurant located at the summit, which overlooks the valley and Lake Zurich. It seems to be a very popular hiking trail and I can imagine that it is very busy during the summer. We had one other idea for our time in Zurich a boat ride along

the Limmat River to see all of the things we missed the night before. Unfortunately, it was cold, raining and everyone was tired and we still had several hours of driving ahead of us so that particular boat ride did not happen. I know that there are many museums in Zurich as well as the beautiful Lake Zurich. I am adding this to my “summer wish list.” I really felt as if our timing was a bit off as it was a little too late for summer activities and too early for the holiday festivals. How to Get There Zurich is approx. 4 hours and 20 minutes south of Wiesbaden Author’s Profile: Cheryl Koller is a native of Georgia.
