Ramstein Air Base is a no-drone zone

Ramstein Air Base continues to operate as a no-drone zone, as the popularity of unmanned aircraft systems, commonly known as drones, continue to rise. For the safety of the community and mission assets, personal drone usage is prohibited on base, as it poses risks to base operations, airspace and public safety. Unauthorized drone flights may detract security assets away from proper emergency responses to other security matters.

What can I expect to happen if I get caught using a drone in a no fly zone?

Offenders of the law can expect one or more of the following consequences:

• Confiscation of their drone

• Apprehension for failure to obey an order under Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice

• Receive one or more citations from German Polizei

• Visitor pass termination

• Revocation of sponsorship privileges

• Termination of their U.S. government civilian contract of employment

• Notification to their sponsor’s command

• Being barred from coming on base

Where is the no-drone zone?

Drone flight is prohibited on all military installations in the Kaiserslautern Military Community except as specifically authorized by the installation commander. The no drone zone also covers a 1.5 km (0.9 mi) radius extension around Ramstein Air Base, unless given authorization before flying. For more guidance on no-drone zones in Germany, check out this map:

» https://maptool-dipul.dfs. de/?language=en

Who regulates my drone usage and where can I receive more information?

The German Federal Aviation Office (LBA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are the two offices that regulate drone use in Germany. According to the LBA, drone use is allowed in Germany and is subject to both LBA and EASA regulations. More information on regulations and receiving a license to use a drone in allowed zones can be found here:

» https://www.lba.de/EN/Drones/ Cross_Border_Operations/ Cross_Border_Operations_ hilfs_node.html

» https://www.easa.europa.eu/ en/the-agency/faqs/drones-uas

What do I need to register my drone and what qualifications will I need?

Unless using a toy drone meant for use in play by children under the age of 16, every drone and drone operator needs to be registered and the drone needs to be insured to legally operate. More information regarding registration and what qualifications you will need to operate your specific drone can be found here:

» https://www.uas-operations. de/homepage/en/information/ general/registration-and-qualification/

Where can I register my drone?

Drones can be registered in Germany following the LBA’s website here:

» https://www.lba.de/DE/ Drohnen/Drohnen_node.html

Where can I go to receive authorization for flying my drone on base?

Operating drones without specific authorization from the installation commander is prohibited.

The requests must go through the 86th Operations Support Squadron small unmanned aircraft system office. The office can be contacted at +49 6374056972 or at 86aw. sUAS.OSO@us.af.mil.

What are some key German regulations on drones?

1. Minimum age for flying a drone is 16 years old.

2. Drone pilots owning a drone that has a maximum take-off mass of at least 250g must obtain an EU certificate of competency (A1/A3) before first UAS flight. Below 250g, no proof of competency is required.

3. All drones are subject to mandatory insurance to cover liability for possible damage.

4. Drone flights within 1.5 km (0.9 mi) of the nearest boundary of an airfield generally need prior approval by authorized officials to fly.

5. Drone pilots must maintain a basic visual line of sight with their drone at all times.

6. The majority of drones will not be flown at an altitude greater than 120 meters high.

This is a lot of information, where can I go to easily search any questions I have?

All information, rules and procedures concerning the operation of drones in Germany can be found on the new website:

HISTORY CORNER

Ramstein Air Base at 72 Years

On August 5, 1952, then-Landstuhl Air Base opened in what we know today as the south side of Ramstein Air Base. Our current Kisling Drive, the main road through base that stretches from the West Gate to the East Gate, served as the physical divider between Landstuhl AB to the south and Ramstein AB to the north. Landstuhl AB opened first, on August 5, 1952, with a runway, control tower, operations support, and the newly transplanted 86th Fighter-Bomber Wing with their F-84F Thunderstreaks. Less than a year later, on June 1, 1953, the Ramstein Exempt Air Force Installation opened to the north of nowKisling Drive. Ramstein AB served as the support installation to the operational Landstuhl AB. Working in tandem for several years, the two

installations combined into a single installation on December 1, 1957, named RamsteinLandstuhl AB. Shortly after, on August 15, 1958, the installation was officially renamed Ramstein AB, as we are still named today.

Throughout the years, as missions have been added, changed, moved, or inactivated, and units have come to Ramstein AB and later leave (sometimes to come back again), the installation has remained a steady presence not only for U.S. military forces and their partners, but also for the local community. Ramstein village gifted land to develop and build our base, and in return the installation has maintained a close and positive relationship with the village. Shared community events, base events, and mutual relationships characterize Ramstein AB as the premier overseas base to live and work, from 1952 through our present day.

ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK

» If possible, wash laundry loads with only cold water.

» If using hot/warm water is crucial, remember to use appropriate water-level settings on your washer machine.

» Also remember, newer washer/dryer

machines have ECO mode, which uses lower energy and water consumption.

» And last, but not least, try out the “tried and true” method of hanging laundry outdoors, using wind and solar power to dry.

DAF senior leaders reinforce importance of allies, partners

Sgt. Emmeline James Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

ARLINGTON, VA. — Department of the Air Force leaders reinforced the importance of allies and partners during their recent trip to the United Kingdom July 17-23.

Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall, Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman, and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin reemphasized the importance of interoperability in the air and space domains during engagements at the Global Air and Space Chiefs’ Conference, Royal International Air Tattoo and Farnborough International Air Show.

Throughout the trip, Kendall, Saltzman and Allvin participated in more than a dozen bilateral and multilateral engagements to deepen and expand relationships

with allies and partners from Europe, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific.

“Integration starts with us,” Allvin penned in a primer submitted to GASCC for publication.

“Common values like respect for sovereignty, liberty, and the rule of law form the foundation of our relationships. These relationships translate into strategic real-time intelligence sharing and culminate in integrated battlespace activities.”

Kendall met with a range of U.K. defense and military officials, including the Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry Maria Eagle, and Royal Air Force Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton. Additionally, he met with the new chief of the Royal Australian Air Force, Air Marshal Stephen Chappell, to discuss the recent Department of the Air Force reoptimization for Great Power Competition initiative and reaf-

firm bilateral strategic alignment, and Royal Netherlands Navy Vice Adm. Jan Willem Hartman, Materiel and IT Command commander, to explore opportunities to deepen collaboration.

A key aspect Kendall highlighted throughout each of his engagements was the need for the Department of the Air Force to intentionally and efficiently drive modernization efforts to contend with challenging strategic competitors.

“We’re in a situation today where it’s really important for the Department of the Air Force to modernize as effectively and quickly as we can,” Kendall said during his keynote address at the Farnborough International Air Show. “We need to make good choices, partner closely with our allies, and develop and field cutting-edge capabilities together.”

Among Allvin’s engagements were meetings with the Royal Australian Air Force Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell and the Japan Air SelfDefense Force Chief of Staff Gen. Hiroaki Uchikura. These discussions focused on the importance of the trilateral strategic relationship and reassuring the strength of shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Allvin also met with counterparts from Finland, Sweden, and Norway to discuss the regional security environment and support to NATO’s deterrence and defense mission.

Additionally, Allvin, Saltzman and Knighton signed a shared vision statement at the Global Air and Space Chiefs’ Conference. This statement underscores the focus on collaboration with the RAF

across three lines of effort: operational harmonization, capability integration, and system resilience.

“Among great powers, space is the linchpin,” Saltzman said. “We’re part of a growing group of allies and partners that enhance our collective security through resiliency, redundancy and interoperability. Collaboration between the U.S. and the U.K. is essential to maintaining our combined force’s competitive advantage across all domains.”

Allvin emphasized collaboration is key to success in addressing rapidly evolving threats.

“No nation can successfully confront today’s dynamic security environment alone,” Allvin said. “By increasing our integration with the Royal Air Force, we are enhancing our collective ability to address the threats we face. We will continue to invest in partnerships like this to build enduring advantages while simultaneously strengthening deterrence.”

Part of Saltzman’s engagements included meeting with U.K. Royal Air Force Air and Space Commander Air Marshal Allan Marshall and Australian Army Maj. Gen. Gregory Novak, Australian Defence Space Command commander, to discuss the ongoing AUKUS security partnership. He also met with British Army Maj. Gen. Paul Tedman, U.K. Space Command commander, discussing U.K. space power priorities and U.S. Space Force efforts to reoptimize for GPC.

“This theory’s viability rests on our ability to build a coalition to uphold and strengthen a rules-based international order for space,” Saltzman wrote about the U.S. Space Force’s theory of success

in an article for the GASCC publication. “Given the inherently global nature of space activities and the interconnectedness of space systems, collaboration among spacefaring nations is indispensable for enhancing space situational awareness, promoting responsible behavior, and establishing norms of behavior in space.”

During keynote remarks at GASCC, Saltzman also advocated for a shift in perspective regarding the current military deterrence model in a time where aggressors are developing new methods, asymmetric, and hybrid warfare to try and erode the established international order – including the space domain. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of effective deterrence.

“I believe Integrated Deterrence is a valuable and worthy approach in the U.S.’s National Defense Strategy,” Saltzman said. “Our NDS describes it as a weaving together of capabilities and concepts with those of our international and interagency partners to dissuade aggression.”

To do this effectively, Saltzman said, “I propose we design our forces and orchestrate our activities around military functions like ‘protect’ and ‘defend,’ which we can more tangibly pursue, rather than ‘deterrence,’ which is a more nebulous and complex concept.”

Together with NATO allies and European partners, the U.S. continues to transform and modernize its military forces to enable alliance and coalition operations and improve speed, posture, transparency and alignment across all domains – air, sea, land, cyber and space.

U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman, Royal Air Force Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton, and U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin sign a Shared Vision Statement on Combined Air and Space Power in the 21st Century at the RAF’s Global Air & Space Chiefs’ Conference in London, United Kingdom, July 17. The endeavor is a successive step in a long history of security cooperation and collaboration between the two nations and recognizes the need to rapidly adapt to a changing operational environment

US completes withdrawal from AB 201

The U.S. military completed its withdrawal from Air Base 201 in Agadez on Aug. 5.

The departure from AB 201 was completed more than a month ahead of schedule and was facilitated by the transparency and professionalism of both U.S. and Nigerien forces.

“We were able to complete the

major phase of this withdrawal so quickly due to the cooperation with our Nigerien military counterparts,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Kenneth Ekman, Department of Defense West Africa Coordination Element Lead, U.S. Africa Command. “It continues at the military level and is affirmed at the political level by Nigerien authorities. The safe, orderly, and responsible withdrawal of U.S. forces and assets is made pos-

sible due to out 15 years of close collaboration with the Nigerien military.”

U.S. logistics personnel, in cooperation with the Joint Disengagement Commission, ensured personnel and assets were vacated from AB 201in a safe and efficient manner. The commission will continue coordination efforts to ensure the full withdrawal is completed by or before the planned date of Sept. 15.

“The U.S. service members I have met during the withdrawal have impressed me with their professionalism and commitment to their mission despite the unique set of challenges they have faced over the last few months,” Ekman said. “They and their families personify resilience. I was struck by the number of service members who insisted on staying until the very end to ensure the withdrawal was done well.”

In addition to ensuring the safety of all personnel and assets throughout the withdrawal process, U.S. and Nigerien forces effected an efficient turnover of facilities to enable Niger’s efforts to counter violent extremist organizations throughout the Sahel region. Withdrawal efforts at AB 201 come two months after the first C-17 aircraft departed Air Base 101 in Niamey on June 7; withdrawal efforts there lasted one month.

The U.S. Department of Defense and the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Niger announce that the withdrawal of U.S. forces and assets from Air Base 201 in Agadez is complete. Over the past decade, U.S. troops have trained Niger’s forces and supported partner-led counterterrorism missions against Islamic State and al Qaeda in the region. The Air Base 201 turnover is a significant milestone in the U.S. military withdrawal from Niger and was a byproduct of effective cooperation and communication between both nations.

Public Health Command Europe Soldier takes pride in his Army career

After six years of service, Public Health Command Europe Preventive Medicine Soldier reflects on his career and continues to work hard to keep service members safe.

Florida-native, Sgt. Cole Barnett worked a variety of jobs after high school until he joined the U.S. Army in April 2019, for more stability and discipline in his life.

“I was twenty years old and did not have a lot of direction in my life,” said Barnett. “I found it honorable to serve and enlisted in the Army.”

Initially, Barnett wanted to join as an explosive ordnance disposal specialist but then decided to pursue a career in the medical field. He was offered a preventive medicine specialist position.

“I didn’t know much about it at first, but I did my research and decided to go through the training,” said Barnett. “It was a good fit and I really enjoy it.”

A 68 Sierra, also known as preventive medicine specialist, is a major contributor when it comes to keeping the Army healthy and preventing the spread of infection and disease. They conduct laboratory tests to monitor the spread of bacteria, survey and track conditions for potential risks and keep health records.

“Our mission is very broad,” said Barnett. “Amongst other sections, it touches water safety, radiation safety, entomology and audiology.”

At Public Health Command Europe, Barnett has been the Army Hearing Program and Health and Human Services Noncommissioned Officer in Charge for the last year and a half.

“I report hearing readiness, happenings

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Soldiers take part in maritime medical combat training in Greece

and injuries of all Army service members in Europe to the Army Hearing Program and the U.S. Army Medical Command,” said Barnett.

“I also run a hearing booth at the medical treatment facility where I see about 200 service members any given month.”

A big part of the Army Hearing Program is education. Public Health Command Europe hosts a quarterly Department of Defense Hearing Technician Certification and Hearing Program Officer training which Barnett supports.

“I love helping people. Teaching is a great way to interact and inform people about health diseases that they may not think about that often,” said Barnett. “I’d love to be an instructor at some point in my military career.”

According to Barnett, hearing loss is an invisible injury that people tend to forget because it is not visible.

“The Army teaches you three things; shoot, move and communicate. If hearing is impaired, it makes it difficult to communicate which can ultimately result in mission failure.”

To avoid hearing loss, Barnett encourages everyone to use hearing protection.

“A standard M4 shoots above 140 decibels which is considered a hazardous noise even at just one trigger pull,” said Barnett. “It is crucial to wear hearing protection at the range to keep you safe.”

Hearing protection can be acquired at Public Health Command Europe or any hearing conservation site at a medical treatment facility.

SOUDA BAY, GREECE – Two Soldiers from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) had the opportunity to take part in maritime medical combat training in Greece June 3 to 14. The weeklong training event was held at the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Center (NMIOTC) in Souda Bay, Greece.

Sgt. 1st Class David Shrewsbury and Staff Sgt. William White from LRMC were among a group of more than 20 military medics from several NATO countries taking part in the training. Among the participants were medics from The Federal Republic of Germany, Slovenia, Latvia, Italy, Hungary, Greece, and the Netherlands.

“The primary goal of the training was on medical combat care in a maritime environment with a focus on prolonged field care,” said Sgt. 1st Class David, Shrewsbury, noncommissioned officer in charge of patient care services at LRMC. “With the Army shifting its focus to large scale combat operations, it is important to consider the impact of not having that “golden hour” regarding casualty evacuation will have on the survivability of critically injured casualties.”

According to NMIOTC officials, the goal of the course is to integrate medical personnel skills and knowledge in performing the necessary pre-hospital emergency medical assistance on the site, starting from the point of injury in the mission/theatre until the final transfer of the injured personnel to the closest medical treatment facility, in support of the maritime operations.

“We need to be able to focus on doing the best we can with the supplies we have on-hand and enable our combat medics to

practice critical thinking and make tough choices,” added Shrewsbury. “Practicing this now will make us more effective if and when the need arises.”

According to senior military medical officials, conducting tactical combat casualty care and patient evacuation in a water-borne environment creates additional stresses and challenges for those individuals responsible for performing the task.

“The most challenging part of the training was the final field training exercise,” Shrewsbury added. “The field exercise lasted seven-plus hours from start to finish in 100 plus degree weather. We had to carry heavy supplies while wearing body armor, move around in small spaces, and navigate a chaotic environment without knowing when it would be over. Managing all aspects of patient care and evacuation, to include triage, medications (some of which needed to be kept at specific temperatures), and other supplies while setting up and working ropes and pulleys to extract casualties was both mentally and physically taxing.”

In addition to combat casualty care, the weeklong course is also designed to refine individual tactical awareness, medical competencies, interoperability, and operational planning capabilities.

“The course served as a blatant reminder that we are all Soldiers first, and that while we may each specialize in a particular craft, our skill sets should be well rounded,” said Staff Sgt. William White, non-commissioned officer in charge of the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Dermatology Clinic. “This course was, by and large, the most impactful training event of my nine-year Army career. Having the chance to work and learn jointly with members of allied nations was an excellent opportunity.”

Dental Health Command Europe Soldiers take part in 100-mile foot march

NIJMEGEN, NETHERLANDS – Thirteen Soldiers from Dental Health Command Europe took part in the grueling 100-mile Nijmegen foot march in the Netherlands, July 16-19. The 106th annual Nijmegen march goes back more than 120 years, starting in 1909 as a military training event designed to build soldier stamina and endurance. This year’s Nijmegen march saw more than 41,000 participants from more than 70 nations taking part. Participation in this historic event further strengthens the relationship with allies and partner countries and promotes esprit de corps across respective formations. Courtesy photos

ONTARIO – U.S. Army Capt. (Dr.) Bradley Truong (center), a general dentist assigned to the Wiesbaden Army Dental Clinic, was among a group of Canadian military dentists who attended a clinical prosthodontics course at Canadian Forces Base Borden in Ontario, Canada recently. The two-week course offered Truong a unique opportunity to not only expand his dental knowledge and skills, but also to foster relations and collaboration with NATO partners. The course provided Truong and other attendees didactic training, along with hands-on clinical time, in order to broaden their skills in a range of prosthodontic procedures. The training was conducted under the close guidance of three Royal Canadian Dental Corps prosthodontists. During the two-week course, Truong gained valuable insight into the operations of the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. Courtesy photos

809th MRBC Activation Ceremony

Public Health Command Europe works closely with Polish Ministry of Health, Ministry of National Defense

SWIETOSZÓW, POLAND — At the request of U.S. European Command, U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe Environmental Engineers attended the first Combined Drinking Water Summit for the U.S. Department of Defense with the Polish Ministry of Health and Ministry of National Defense from 09 to 11 July.

The U.S. European Command J-4 Logistics Support and Infrastructure Program Office organized the summit to bring together all key players in water safety and defense to

increase knowledge and shared understanding between the U.S. and Poland in order to achieve water quality that meets the required final governing standards for U.S. Military personnel working and living in Poland.

EUCOM requested PHCE attend to provide subject matter expertise and training on U.S. standards to their Polish counterparts.

“While both countries end goal is to provide safe and suitable drinking water for their Soldiers, the testing procedures in the U.S. and Poland are different,” said Hugh Bailey, PHCE Environmental Engineer. “In the U.S., we test the entire system and different steps along the way but in Poland the primary

concern is testing and examination of the finished product, the water that comes out of the faucet.”

The final governing standards are specific to each country and may have requirements that the end user in each country does not normally deal with so it is important that each involved party understands the different requirements.

“We discussed both Polish Government Standards and US Final Governing Standards for water quality, treatment, the management of installation distribution systems, and monitoring and we compared the standards and requirements between the two systems,”

said Bailey. “The Polish presented their laboratory capabilities and public health requirements which ultimately will help us come to an agreement for the way forward.”

PHCE engineers trained participants on technical processes concerning drinking water treatment, spotlighting a production plant and garrison at Swietoszów which will serve as a “test case and will set the example for execution of future sampling events”, according to Bailey.

The in-person summit was critical to identify key players, establish relationships and lay the foundation for future dialogues using online platforms.

Bicycling Safety

As you might expect, when a crash occurs between a vehicle and a bike, it’s the cyclist most likely to be injured. Here are some tips on how you can prevent bicycle injuries and deaths, and remember: A large percentage of crashes can be avoided if motorists and cyclists follow the rules of the road and watch out for each other.

• Wear equipment to protect you and make you more visible to others, like an approved bike helmet, bright clothing (during the day), reflective gear, and a white front light and red rear light and reflectors on your bike

(at night or when visibility is poor).

• Remember to use arm and hand signals.

• Ride with traffic, not against it.

• Avoid riding at night, if possible. If you must ride at night, install front and rear lights on your bicycle and wear reflective clothing. It’s the law! Regardless of the season, bicyclist deaths occurred most often between 6-9 p.m.

• Be careful when riding in urban areas. Bicyclist deaths occur most often in urban areas (75 percent) compared to rural areas (25 percent)) in 2020.

• Don’t drink alcohol and ride.

• Ride a bike that fits you. If it’s too big,

it’s harder to control the bike.

• Carry all items in a backpack or strapped to the back of the bike.

• Tuck and tie your shoe laces and pant legs so they don’t get caught in your bike chain

• Plan your route, choose routes with less traffic and slower speeds. Your safest route may be away from traffic altogether, in a bike lane or on a bike path.

Bicycling is one of the best ways to get exercise, see the sights, and reduce your carbon footprint. However, bicyclists face a host of hazards. They often must share the road with vehicles, and injuries can happen even on a designated path.

Soldier wins Olympic Silver Medal in 3-Positions Rifle

Army Sgt. Sagen Maddalena won the silver medal in the women’s three-positions rifle final at the Paris Olympics.

Maddalena earned a place in the finals with the top eight competitors after setting an Olympic qualification record with a score of 593-45x. China’s Qiongyue Zhang followed close behind with a 593-40x.

Once in the final, the Army Marksmanship Unit soldier took the lead after the first five kneeling shots with 52.2 points and held her first-place lead after 10 shots with 104.4. Austria’s Nadine Ungerank followed with a 104. Moving into the prone position, with 15 shots in, the Groveland, California native slipped down to fourth with a 155.9

as Switzerland’s Chiara Leone took the lead with a 156.2. Ungerank and Zhang followed in second and third.  However, after another five shots, Maddalena took the lead again with a 208.2, with China just .1 behind. Maddalena spread the gap after 25 shots with a score of 261.2 while Zhang held second with a 260.4. With 30 shots into the final, Maddalena continued to lead with 314.0 points.

After five shots in the standing position, Maddalena slipped down to fifth with a 361.8 while Zhang moved into first place with a 364.7. Norway, Switzerland and Austria followed respectively. With five more shots into the standing position, the marksmanship instructor and competitive shooter stationed out of Fort Moore, Georgia, moved up to fourth.

By shot 42, Maddalena had taken the lead again with 433.6 points, a .2 lead over Leone.

Shot 43 brought Maddalena into the final three competitors of the event, ensuring an Olympic medal. At that moment, she had 443.0 points while Zhang was in second with a .2 point lead and Leone was first with .9 point lead.

After two more shots, Maddalena secured the silver medal over China with 463.0 points while Switzerland claimed the gold.

This was not the first Olympics for Maddalena. She competed in the three-positions rifle, or smallbore, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics placing fifth. The last time Team USA medaled in this event was 2012 when Jamie Beverley won gold in London.

ABC IN KMC: Splish, splash!

The big yellow sphere in the sky is peeking out more often, temperatures are rising, you may miss air-conditioning. You’re definitely ready for a cool refreshment and a dive into the next body of water?

You may be surprised that Germany boasts an impressive coastline that stretches over 1,400 miles (2,250 kilometers). The North Sea along the west coast offers sandy shores and islands such as Wangerooge, Borkum, Norderney and trendy Sylt, Germany’s most northern island. The Baltic Sea to the east has a variety of beautiful beaches along the coast, several fashionable seaside resorts, and Germany’s largest island Rügen. The only drawback is that all the sandy sites may be a good choice for an extended weekend, but just too far away for an afternoon refreshment.

The good news is that Kaiserslautern and the surrounding county offer a variety of swimming and bathing opportunities, ideal for all ages and preferences. Here are some notable spots:

• Kaiserslautern Freibad Waschmühle: Known locally as “Wesch,” this historic outdoor pool is one of the largest in the region. It features a vast water area of 7,200 square meters and a sunbathing area of 25,000 square meters. It’s a pop ular spot for families and those looking to enjoy a sunny day by the pool.

• Warmfreibad Kaiserslautern: This heated outdoor pool is another great option, offering a range of facilities including a large swimming pool, diving boards, and a children’s pool. It’s open from May to September and provides a comfortable swimming experience even on cooler days.

• Ramstein Azur: Family friendliness is particularly important at the AZUR. Children up to three years of age have free entry to the swimming pool when accompanied by their parents. There are paddling areas for the youngest visitors both in the inner area of the pool and in the outdoor pool. For hot summer days there is a swimming pool with a length of 50 meters in the outdoor pool, as well as an adjacent non-swimmer area. A separate diving pool offers space for brave jumpers. The spacious sunbathing lawn rounds off the offer for the summer.

• Seewoog Miesenbach: Situated on the outskirts of Miesenbach in a woody area, the lake offers a beautiful park area with a terrace overlooking the

water. It’s ideal for a leisurely walk, swim or simply enjoying the scenic view with a cool drink or snack at the kiosk.

• Naturerlebnisbad Landstuhl: The beautifully landscaped beach area is popular. Children and adults alike particularly enjoy spending time there. The older ones help the little ones with digging, building castles or just watching and enjoying the day. Depending on your ability, you can splash around and swim in the naturally fresh water. Experienced swimmers prefer the swimming area to hone their technique and endurance.

• Hohenecken Gelterswoog: For those who prefer natural settings, Gelterswoog is a beautiful lake located just outside Kaiserslautern. It’s perfect for swimming and picnicking. The lake is surrounded by lush greenery, providing a serene escape from the city. There are also facilities for paddle boating and a beach area for sunbathing.

• Naturfreibad Otterberg: This natural pool uses a chemical-free system, offering a unique swimming experience in pure spring water. A short drive from Kaiserslautern, it offers a more rustic experience. It’s surrounded by nature and provides a peaceful environment for swimming and rejuvenating.

2,000 square meters of water that invites guests to splish and splash, play water games or simply just swim.

• Waldfreibad Rodenbach: A heated forest pool with six lanes, a slide, a baby pool, and a kiosk. There are spacious areas to sunbathe and relax, there is a small restaurant, and the facility is equipped with a high dive and a kids’ pool area.

• Freibad Alsenborn: The pool was renovated a few years ago and offers a fun slide, a large basin with diving boards, a separate children’s pool and plenty of shady places to relax and enjoy.

• Freibad Mehlingen: Another outdoor pool near Sembach that is somewhat simpler than Alsenborn, but less crowded on hot summer days.

• Natur-Erlebnisbad Rockenhausen: The unique swimming facility offers a natural swimming experience without the use of chemicals. It features various swimming and bathing areas, a beach volleyball court, a large lawn for sunbathing and a kiosk. The water is treated using biological and mechanical processes, making it suitable for young children and people with sensitive skin. It includes a swimmer’s pool with 25 and 50-meter lanes, a non-swimmer area with a pebble beach and grotto, a

Two natural lakes near Sembach are also worth a mention:

• Billesweiher: This idyllic lake is located near Neuhemsbach on the road towards Alsenborn and is known for its peaceful surroundings. It’s a lovely spot for a quiet swim or a picnic, but please note that it is not ideal for children swimming and there is no lifeguard for safety.

• Eiswoog: Eiswoog is a picturesque lake located near Ramsen, about 30 kilometers north of Kaiserslautern, driving through the forest towards Eisenberg. It is a tranquil spot surrounded by dense forests, making it perfect for a peaceful retreat. The lake is great for swimming, fishing, and hiking. There is also a charming hotel and restaurant nearby, offering a lovely place to stay or enjoy a meal with a view of the lake. The narrow-gauge railway Stumpfwaldbahn offers short rides on weekends during the season. But beware: the name says it all “Eiswoog” means ice lake and the fresh water is extremely cold!

Last, but not least, if you’re willing to drive a bit further, there are three bathing sites west of Kaiserslautern well worth a visit:

• Vitalbad Pfälzer Bergland/Kusel: In addition to the swimmers’ pool, bathers at the outdoor pool have access to the play and fun pool with a wild water channel, cascading water showers, floor and wall bubblers and massage jets, as well as a water mushroom and a wide slide. Little bathers can have fun in the paddling pool or at the water playground. Bostalsee: Located about 40 kilometers southwest of Kaiserslautern, Bostalsee is a large, popular recreational lake. It offers a variety of activities including swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and fishing. The area around the lake is well-developed with beaches, camping sites, and hiking trails, making it a great destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway.

• Ohmbachsee: Situated approximately 25 kilometers west of Kaiserslautern, Ohmbachsee is another fantastic spot for outdoor activities. The lake is surrounded by a beautiful park and offers facilities for swimming, boating, and picnicking. There are also walking and cycling paths around the lake, providing plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenic surroundings.

We wish you lots of fun trying out the various swimming and bathing opportunities in the area. Enjoy swimming, splashing, diving or just lying out in the sun, but stay cool! Photo

US, Belgian forces conduct HIRAIN

Belgian Air Component Warrant Officer Roly Hartwell, 20th Squadron Transport Conversion Unit loadmaster instructor, guides a U.S. Army M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System on a Belgian

U.S. and Belgian Armed Forces teamed up to conduct a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System Rapid Insertion (HIRAIN) training at Ramstein Air Base on July 29.

These HIRAIN operations allow for agile combat employment of critical weapon systems, by enabling High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to be rapidly deployed and execute long-range precision missions.

“HIRAINs extend the operational capabilities of the HIMARS significantly because practically speaking, as far as the aircraft flies… that is added to the range of the munition being fired,” said Texas National Guard Capt. Connor McQuage, 4th Battalion, 133rd Field Artillery Regiment assistant HIRAIN planner.

During the training, two 4-133 FAR HIMARS were rapidly deployed, one by a U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules, and the other by a Belgian A400M Atlas.

Once the HIMARS were loaded, they were taken to Chievres Air Base, Belgium, where crews unloaded the HIMARS and performed a simulated fire exercise, demonstrating the ability to conduct operations within minutes of landing.

The A400M was first used to conduct

an international joint HIRAIN exercise in December 2023, by the Belgian, Latvian and Luxembourg Armed Forces along with the U.S. Army 3rd Battalion, 27th FAR.

U.S. Army Capt. Andrew Shaughnessy, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 3-27 FAR, observed that multinational joint operation and said, “With numerous A400Ms in the NATO fleet and in the European Air Transport Command, this event drastically increased the number of mobility aircraft that can execute HIRAINs within NATO.”

These expansions of our capabilities directly amplify joint forces mission sets in the European theater by allowing increased flexibility and interoperability.

“Using Operation Atlantic Resolve as an example, its mission is to provide rotational deployments of combat-credible forces to Europe to show our commitment to NATO while building readiness, increasing interoperability and enhancing the bonds between ally and partner militaries,” said Texas National Guard Capt. Bryan Feurer, 4-133 FAR, lead HIRAIN planner. “By leveraging partner aircraft, stronger bonds are built as joint SOPs are developed, partner networks of pilots, maintainers and long-range precision fires personnel are established, and HIRAIN training becomes consistently implemented in NATO training cycles.”

GACO CORNER: Avoid release of pharmaceuticals into the environment – protect waters

More and more residues of medicinal products, even dangerous substances, are being detected in surface waters. This is an alarming fact and we want to take the opportunity to provide information on the subject.

How do pharmaceutical residues get into our waters?

Medicines are not fully absorbed by the body. In part they are chemically unchanged when excreted. Ointments are rinsed off the skin when washing. In this way, via municipal sewage large amounts of pharmaceutical degradation products are emitted into soil and water with human and animal excretions. Carelessness and incorrect disposal of drugs down the drain or toilet increase the concentration of this chemical cocktail in our wastewater. As

CROSSWORD

sewage plants are not yet able to absorb, convert or bind these substances diffused in the wastewater, the amount of pharmaceutical residues in streams, rivers and lakes is increasing constantly. To a certain extent, they can even be found in drinking water. This is how drug residues potentially affect our health and have a very negative impact on microorganisms and fish. If at all, it is very difficult to biologically degrade medicinal products. Once they have entered the water cycle, they are hard to remove. This makes it even more important that we avoid or at least reduce the release of medicinal products in the environment as much as possible.

In Kaiserslautern County, non-recyclable waste is incinerated at very high temperatures. Therefore, you are allowed to dispose of medicines in your container for non-recyclable waste (black can).

How to safely dispose of medicines

• Never flush unused medicine down the drain or toilet!

• Please wrap it into a newspaper or paper bag, put it into a waste bag, tie up the bag and throw it into the black can. The reason for this procedure is that the can might topple before it is emptied or that children look into it and mistake pills for sweets.

• If the package insert contains a specific note (e.g. for cytostatic agents in cancer drugs), do not dispose of these drugs in the black can but take them to the hazardous waste truck (Umweltmobil) or the ZAK recycling center. By doing so, you can prevent unauthorized access by third persons.

• Paper boxes and inserts go in the paper can. It is not required to remove pills from their direct packaging (the socalled blister pack). You can discard the entire blister pack in the can for

non-recyclable waste.

• When disposing of objects with points or sharp edges (glass ampoules, syringes, etc.) you should use a non-penetrable box with a screw cap and put the box in the black can.

• If you are unsure whether a certain medicine can be considered nonrecyclable waste, you always have the option to take it to the ZAK recycling center or the hazardous waste truck. While pharmacies are not obliged to take back unused or expired drugs, some offer this customer service on a voluntary basis.

Avoid drug residues

It is vital to act responsibly when handling medicinal products. Please check your supplies for medicines that are still usable before buying new products. In this way, you can avoid medical waste before it occurs.

castle walls. Adults can wear the armor as well if they wish!

The History

All is not lost, though. Because of its tumultuous history, and because Burg Rheinfels gives you free rein to check out the ruins, visitors can now explore the castle’s labyrinth of trenches, tunnels, and towers!

Visiting Rheinfels Castle: What to Expect

The first view you come to before the actual admissions window is a breathtaking sight! Right away you can understand why the Count chose this powerful spot on the Rhein and why others would want to have it. I could have stayed there all day and watched the boats go up and down the river, but I had castle ruins to explore. When entering the castle, you first walk into the lively castle courtyard bakery. Centuries ago, this was where maidens would buy bread, doubling as a luxury hotel where a noble knight would spend a night.

Nowadays, the castle courtyard also has a very popular gift shop. Here, kids can can suit up and buy a wooden shield and sword to help combat any dragons they might face once crossing into the

Entering the archway transports you to another time, when armor-clad kings and knights fought for thrones and some semblance of local power. The Burg Rheinfels ruins still are strong and powerful, even though the reasons it was built are long since passed. It is amazing to visit all the rooms and imagine what the once were. Especially cool is the castle’s cellar, which once stored food and wine since it stays so, well, cool. Today it is used for torch-lit weddings and other events!

It was incredible to be able to touch the original doors and see the peek-holes that were used to see if a visitor was a friend or foe knocking at the door. Now, visitors can walk right through the narrow arched walkways that have been used for centuries. (If those walls could talk!)

Next we went into the mines of Burg Rheinfels. It is advised to bring sturdy walking shoes and flashlights for the dark parts of the mines and their tunnels. The mines were thrilling, fascinating, and seemed endless! At times they are very dark and can be a tight fit, so beware. I tried to imagine what it must have been like for a centuries-ago guard on night

watch to roam in the pitch-dark silence.

Once you emerge from the mines, you can climb high up on a platform or a tower and soak in the beautiful view again. Or you can go explore several more courtyards, or pretty much anywhere in the castle using the map that is provided. You will even come across a guillotine and an old well that was part of the original castle. Thanks to all the horror movies I have seen, I couldn’t decide which was creepier.

Rheinfels Castle is a magical place to visit and explore – by yourself, with friends, with family, and even with your dog (dogs are welcome). You are literally stepping into history and will emerge with a visceral understanding of what it felt like to live in this mighty castle while still enjoying the pure beauty of Germany’s Middle Rhein valley.

Admission costs is €6 Euro for adults, €3 for children ages 6-14, and €4.50 for students. Family and group rates are available, so ask at the ticket counter.

Address: Schlossberg, 56329 St. Goar By car, the castle is just under an hour west of Wiesbaden, 1 hour and 20 minutes north of Kaiserslautern and 2 hours and 45 minutes northwest of Stuttgart.
