GACO: 20 years of serving the KMC

The German American Community Office celebrated its 20th anniversary in Kaiserslautern, April 21.

The GACO was established in February 2003 to promote the integration of American service

members and their families into local German communities. The celebration included the signing of a partnership certificate by Dr. Klaus Weichel, Lord Mayor of Kaiserslautern, Michael Ebling, Minister of the Interior, and U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Derek C. France, Kaiserslautern military community commander — signifying the continued partner­

ship between the American and German people.

“The value of the German American Community Office is in welcoming Americans who have not been in Germany and getting them off to the right start,” France said. “GACO does more than just solve problems. It is the bedrock of this community.”

The GACO consists of a bilin­

gual staff and offers services such as translation support, assistance with administrative matters, and information about life in Germany as well as host nation laws and regulations.

“For 20 years, the GACO has helped improve the coexistence of different cultures in the Kaiserslautern military community,” Weichel said. “We owe a great

debt of gratitude to the bilingual team that has strengthened this community through their dedicated efforts…in the heart of the largest U.S. military community with more than 50,000 U.S. citizens.”

ABC IN KMC: Walpurgisnacht — Witches’ Night

The night from April 30 to May 1 is known as “Walpurgisnacht,” so beware the “witches” are out there.

It is not considered an official holiday but is still a noteworthy event for reasons that will become clear in a second.

In German folklore Wal nacht is heavily linked to witch craft and the supernatural. It is said that witches chose this day to dance on the peaks of hills and plague the populace by causing mischief.

Kids love the evening which is often simply called “Hexennacht” (witches’ night). You can think of it as a mix between Halloween and April Fools. A big part of the “holiday” is playing pranks on unsuspecting people. Usually this is limited to minor nuisances like spraying shaving cream on door handles and wrapping lamp posts in toilet paper.

On occasion some people might overdo it with the pranks.

Just to be on the safe side, do not leave items out in your front yard as people might carry them off.  If you own a garage, park your

car inside to avoid cleaning up shaving cream in the morning or decorative toilet paper on the antenna or mirrors.

Sometimes kids will drape toilet paper across a street and demand a toll. Of course, you are not required to pay it, but just a

few cents will spare you the pleading and the puppy eyes.

German Labor Day – “Tag der Arbeit” May 1

“Tag der Arbeit,” usually simply referred to as “Maifeiertag” (Mayholiday), has its origins in the labor union movements of the late 1880’s. Just like American Labor Day, the day is now used to celebrate the achievements of workers past and present.

The first day of May is also used to celebrate spring. Traditionally communities will erect large, heavily decorated polls called “Maibaum” (May Pole) and light public bonfires.  The festivities are often accompanied with songs and dancing. You might read a sign “Tanz in den Mai,” inviting you to a dance event. In some communities, young men (and women) will guard the Maibaum, have a jolly time doing so or will try to steal the tree in the neighboring village.

As with all federal holidays, stores and public offices will be closed on Labor Day.

American traces in Homburg

On a journey driving down A6 towards Saarbrücken or Zweibrücken, you may have caught the sign “Homburg,” not realizing that the quaint town with 41,000 inhabitants is the third largest city in our neighbor state Saarland and also has a chest full of hidden historical treasures.

The town is famous for one of the largest breweries in Germany, its caves “Schlossberghöhlen,” and its castle ruins. It hosts the largest flea market in the region and a restructured Roman village can be explored at nearby village Schwarzenacker. However, not many know that former residents, soldiers and influential emigrants from Homburg also shaped the history of the United States centuries ago.

Members of the 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Office set out on a discovery tour to Homburg to bring a few fun facts and interesting insights closer. For example, George Washington’s aide­decamp and famous painter John Trumbull was the first American tourist who was known by name in Saarland.

An estimated 17 percent of Americans are descendants of Germans, many of whom were from the Saarland. Some of these emigrants became rather famous, such as David Weber a pioneer of the wild west in the late 1800s.

Guided by Klaus Friedrich of the Deutsch­Amerikanischer Freundeskreis Saarpfalz (German­American Friendship Group) the group experienced a walking tour of the town to encounter unknown and remarkable American traces.

A historical inn built in 1906 was the start of the tour at the “Rondell.” Beginning March 1945 the inn served as the U.S. Army Thunderbird Division headquarters. Later in July when French troops followed, they also used the inn as their headquarters and officers’ club. Kaiserstrasse, initially built by Napoleon, was used by both armies to liberate Kaiserslautern.

Strolling through Homburg’s old town you can catch a glimpse of the same architecture of first houses in New York when it was still named Nieuw Amsterdam.

The legendary German Royal French Infantry Royal Deux Ponts regiment is closely connected with Homburg and America’s history.

In 1776, the 13 states of North America revolted against the British crown under George Washington’s command. The Royal Deux Ponts regiment recruited soldiers in or near Homburg and was sent overseas in 1780. During the Battle of Yorktown October 14, 1781, the regiment captured the important entrenchment “Redoute 9” forcing supreme commander Lord Cornwallis to surrender five days later. After the final British surrender in 1783, negotiations held in Yorktown between the enemy parties resulted in the United States finally being granted independence.

As thousands of soldiers returned in 1783, the Royal DeuxPonts also brought with them the ideas of the American Revolution with far reaching consequences.

Ten years later Louis XVI of France was executed, Karl II August fled from the advancing French revolutionary soldiers and his castle Karlsberg near Homburg went up in flames.

In 1786 John Trumbull visited the region and the impressions that he gained during his journey were written down in his autobiography, also complimenting the delicious potato salad in Saarland.

A further house was inhabited by Johann Georg August Wirth who published the legendary “Deutsche Tribüne,” a democratic newspaper in 1832. Ludwig August Wollenweber who supported him was forced to flee and seek his fortune in the United States as many other democratic minded Germans and founded the “Liberal,” a daily newspaper in Philadelphia. He later took over “The Democrat” which became the leading German paper of the East coast capital. In addition, he was engaged as correspondent for German newspapers and normally wrote in high German, but occasionally used Westrich dialect, very similar to Pennsylvanian Dutch.

“My home is where freedom is” was the slogan of thousands of emigrants that left Germany and found a new home and political freedom in the United States after the Revolution in 1848 when citizens stood up against Bavarian rule. Hinting at the March Revolution, they were called the “Forty Eighters” with Carl Schurz, who had lived in Homburg, being the most prominent one among them. In 1852 he emigrated to the United States and became a strong supporter of the Republican Party, contributing to Abraham Lincoln winning the election by recruiting Germans to vote for him. Later he fought in the Civil War as Union general, along with thousands of other German soldiers, and was appointed Secretary of the Interior

by President Hayes in 1877. When Carl Schurz died in New York in 1906, it was none other than Mark Twain who praised this significant “Forty­Eighter” posthumously.

Further Germans from the region had a strong influence on pre­civil war history. Thomas Nast emigrated in 1846 and quickly became a prominent political cartoonist and engaged himself in support of the Union. Abraham Lincoln described him as being the best “advertising medium” with his caricatures. Nast became an adamant supporter of civil rights and also created the two political symbols, a donkey for the Democrats and an elephant for the Republicans. The well­known Uncle Sam caricature stems from his pen and during the holiday season he would draw figures and created the first illustration of Santa Claus, inspired by St. Nikolaus from home in Germany.

Another Jewish­German emigrant Levi Strauss designed the first pair of “blue jeans,” initially intended as clothes built to endure anything. The denim pants quickly gained popularity and Strauss created a lifestyle trend for generations to come, while worldwide sales reached 6.1 billion dollars in 2022.

You might also discover a small plaque located at the former parsonage with the inscription “Carl David Weber”, who lived there from 1815 – 1836. In that year he emigrated to America and stayed in New Orleans for a short time. Later he went to St. Louis where he heard about a group of people heading west. After six months and close to starvation, the group reached California which was then still part of Mexico. He

changed his name to “Don Carlos Maria Weber” and purchased a huge piece of land in 1847. The houses, stable and rodeo places were meant to attract settlers and in 1848 Mexico was forced to cede California and the gold fever set in. First named Tuleburg, he later renamed the town to Stockton, which later flourished as a significant industrial and cultural capital. Weber died in his own town in 1881 and is remembered to this day.

A further stop on the discovery tour was at the former town hall at the market square. Georg Müller, a soldier born in Homburg and member of the African Corps during World War II was a prisoner of war and transferred to Kentucky, where he discovered a copy of the New York Times Magazine, edition April 15, 1945. He was astonished to see a photo of weary civilians and determined U.S. soldiers standing on the steps of the building in his hometown, claiming “We take over!” He brought back the original magazine that is kept in the Homburg city archives.

There are many more unsung heroes, poets and pioneers that came from Homburg or the region. The Deutsch ­ Amerikanischer Freundeskreis Saarpfalz holds strong ties with Henrico County, Virginia, and organizes annual German­American events. Use the opportunity to explore and discover American traces for yourself wandering through the town or enjoy a guided tour.

86th MDS celebrates 30 years of partnership with LRMC

Ramstein Air Base’s 86th Medical Squadron celebrated 30 years of partnership with Landstuhl Regional Medical Center personnel during a cake cutting ceremony at LRMC, April 14.

86th MDS began their partnership with LMRC in 1993 after the hospital opened its doors to patrons in 1953. Airmen of the 86th MDS worked out of Wiesbaden until the clinic closed. Today, the medical squadron provides services at both LRMC and the Ramstein AB clinic.

“Our squadron had 288 Airmen holding a variety of Air Force Specialty Codes,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Irene Folaron, 86th MDS commander. “A comprehensive hospital was the perfect place for them to be, and have a unique experience to combine two different military services.”

In the beginning, challenges arose with the integration of the U.S. Air Force and Army in a work environment as the requirements can differ across military branch­

es. However, the team viewed these challenges as a unique opportunity to learn the cultures of other services in the delivery of health care.

“Despite the differences in uniform, when it comes to patient care, medicine is medicine,” said Folaron. “That is what we have always focused on.”

During the cake cutting ceremony, 86th MDG staff and local community members reflected on LRMC’s history and global reputation for its exceptional treatment of the heroes who seek care there.

“It really solidified why we wear the uniform to begin with,” said U.S. Army Col. Andrew L. Landers, LRMC commander. “When we have these unbelievable men and women that are willing to stand in harm’s way for all of the things that we hold dear in our hearts, we truly believe in why we are in the United States military.”

The 86th Medical Group provides health care services supporting three wings, 3 AF, USAFE, NATO, 139 geographically separated units in 93 countries and the largest Department of Defense military community overseas.

Keeping Ramstein Air Base excellent

Service members from across the Kaiserslautern military community participated in Installation Excellence Day on April 18­19, to clean and spruce up work centers and living spaces at their respective bases.

Installation Excellence Day happens every year during Earth Week, said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Michael Wilson, event coordinator from the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron. He said everyone who lives or works on Ramstein Air Base, Kapaun Air Station, and Landstuhl Regional Medical Clinic participated to clean both inside and out of their respective facilities with a ‘clean where you work’ and ‘clean where you live’ day.

“This allows facility managers and housing residents to clean inside and outside their buildings,” he said. “We do it to help with general maintenance and do our part by recycling what we don’t need anymore.”

Volunteers from 786th CES picked up biodegradable bags, bulk items such as old furniture, toys and appliances, Wilson said. In addition to getting rid of old or broken furniture, facility managers received help with basic landscaping.

Not only does Installation Excellence Day help the KMC with a “spring cleaning” of the bases,

but it helps service members across the installations take ownership in their work centers and living spaces.

“It united our squadron through a focused goal: decluttering and freshening up our work environment,” said Airman 1st Class Dustin Huynh, 86th Comptroller Squadron financial operations technician.

Not only does decluttering and cleaning create a tidier work environment and help increase the lifespan of office furniture, but Huynh said the more comfortable work environment boosts coworkers’ moods and overall productivity.

Spring cleaning is a great reset to start fresh as the year moves

toward warmer months, but tidying up the installations is something that can be done year­round. Wilson said service members can borrow tools at the U­Fix­It store or call the CE customer service for assistance if it requires a little more expertise.

Over at the 86th CPTS, Huynh said their office tackled the larger tasks like weeding outside the building and walkways and deep cleaned all the windows, but they also have a schedule to regularly tidy up work spaces and keep the office clean year­round.

After Installation Excellence Day and with fresh, decluttered installations, the KMC is poised to execute the Global Gateway mission.

Behind every name is a story, USAG RP, 21TSC hold Days of Remembrance Observance

On April 18, USAG RheinalndPfalz and 21st Theater Sustainment Command held a Days of Remembrance Observance ceremony to honor the six million Jews and millions of non­Jewish victims persecuted and murdered in the Holocaust. The theme for this year was “Behind every name is a story.”

“The U.S. Army remembers and honors those killed during the Holocaust — as their sacrifices commit us to vigilance against hate and persecution. Soldiers will never forget these crimes against humanity. Days of Remembrance provides Soldiers the opportunity to reflect on the moral obligations

respect for all,” said Col. Reid E. Furman, Garrison Commander, in his opening remarks.

“We remember the lessons of the Holocaust and challenge everyone in our community, military and civilian, to remain vigilant. We remember, behind every name is a story; these are stories of suffering, stories of courage, and perseverance.”

Guest speaker, Benjamin Moses Chait, Kantor and Religionsbeauftragter of the Synagogengemeinde Saar in Saarbruecken, spoke to the audience about the meaning of the Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“We make a distinction between remembering and not forgetting. Most people would say that they are the same thing, remembering

means, I did not forget it. I didn’t forget something usually means, of course, that ‘I remembered it’,” Chait said.

“In Judaism, not forgetting is not the same as remembering. When you remember something, you might regret something about it; you might have seen something on tv, or you might have learned something about it. But in Judaism, ‘not forgetting’ means that there are people that teach other people, not to forget. There are people that write books, so others can remember. People that write articles, people that make events like this — so that others remember.”

Recognition of Gold Star Spouses

Rheinland Pfalz Army Community Service held a Gold Star Spouses Day Recognition Ceremony April 5 at the Rheinlander Convention Center in Baumholder to honor the sacrifices and legacies of Gold Star Families and their fallen loved ones. Gold Star Spouses whose service member died while on active-duty status receive either the Gold Star Lapel Button or the Lapel Button in remembrance of service members who gave their lives on behalf of a forever grateful nation. Since January 2017, USAG-RP ACS provides a monthly support meeting for Survivors to share their unique experiences and to offer and receive support. The program has grown to 36 active Survivor Families over the last 3 years. Photos

Defense Public Health psychologist offers tips to help children cope with change

In 1986, then ­ Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger designated April as “Month of the Military Child.” During this month, national, state and local governments, organizations, and agencies, along with militaryserving communities, make time to celebrate the important role more than 1.6 million military children play in the Armed Forces community.

Although military children experience many unique and exciting experiences, they also often face many challenges as a result of their parents’ service. Some of these challenges can include moving an average of every two to three years, changing schools, adjusting to separations during parent deployments and other missions, and building new support networks.

Due to these frequent changes, military children can often be faced with celebrating special occasions such as holidays, birthdays, graduations, and other important milestones away from their loved ones. These events not only impact stability but can

contribute to feelings of stress, fussiness, sadness, worry and frustration. Other changes that can occur include difficulty concentrating in school, withdrawing from others, differences in eating and sleeping patterns, and negative thinking.

In its 2021 Military Family Lifestyle Survey, Blue Star Families, a military family advocacy organization, found that 17 percent of active ­ duty respondents reported a child or children who were receiving behavioral [mental] health care. An additional 17 percent of respondents said they would like their children to receive behavioral health care, but they currently do not.

Military children commonly experience adjustment disorders in response to changes in peer relationships, ability to communicate openly with a parent/caregiver, and engagement in positive social activities. Difficulty adjusting to life changes can greatly impact a child’s mood, self ­ esteem, behavior, academic performance and overall adjustment to a stressor.

Behavioral health intervention strategies that can effectively help military children manage stress include providing healthy

outlets for emotions; integrating family, school, and social support; and fostering healthy stress management and coping skills.

Army Lt. Col. Virgil Rivera, a board ­ certified, licensed clinical social worker with the Defense Centers for Public Health–Aberdeen who specializes in working with children and their families, says it’s important for parents to maintain a healthy and active attachment to their children by spending at least 20 minutes a day with them.

“The time may be spent learning more about their child’s school day, hearing about their friends, or even playing a game together,” said Rivera.

Rivera recognizes that sometimes parents are unable to dedicate this time daily due to military/work obligations or to other family responsibilities; however, it is important to be mindful that the quality of the time spent together fosters a meaningful parent/child relationship with both short ­ and long ­ term benefits.

“If a child knows and feels that their parent is available to them, then their experience may also shape their view on how they approach relationships with

others and how they view themselves,” said Rivera. “In some ways, parenting is a leadership role where caring behaviors, words, tone and time are foundational to the growth and development of our next generation.”

Military children are known for their strength, dedication and sacrifices. To help build their resilience in response to the expected and unexpected challenges, it is important to equip military children with stress management strategies and healthy coping skills that can help foster positive outcomes. Here are some recommended healthy coping strategies:

Healthy coping skills for kids

• Maintain routines

• Positive affirmations and selftalk

• Healthy expression of feelings – art, writing, talking, laughing, praying, crying

• Relaxation techniques – deep breathing, muscle relaxation, guided imagery

• Physical activity – sports, stretching, yoga

• Mind activities – reading, puzzles, listening to music

Austin hopes NATO partnership for Sweden by summer

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III has told his Swedish counterpart he hopes that Sweden will get NATO membership before the summer.

On the first day of a fourday trip to Sweden and Germany, Austin met with Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson for a Tuesday morning defense meeting at the headquarters of the Swedish navy on Musko Naval Base near Stockholm.

“Mr. Minister, thanks for the tremendous hospitality. We’re delighted to be here, and I really appreciate the warm welcome from your troops this morning,” Austin told his counterpart. “We look forward to continuing to advocate for your swift admission to NATO, and we’ll work hard to get that done before the summer. I think that’s really, really important.”

Austin told Jonson that the admission of Sweden to NATO — something that happened earlier this month for neighboring Finland — will greatly enhance the NATO alliance.

“You will ... add a lot of value to NATO, our overall effort,” Austin said. “You have ... a highly professional military, and you have invested a lot in modernization over the last several years. As you know, our forces have done a lot together and, thereby, increased interoperability here over the last several years. We have one of the largest exercises in recent history

ongoing as we speak, and I look forward to some good results coming out of that.”

Right now, Sweden, the U.S., and other European nations are participating in the Swedish military Exercise Aurora 23, which runs to May 11. It is the largest Swedish military exercise in

decades and readies participants for responding to an attack on Sweden.

The U.S, Sweden and multiple other European nations are also spinning up for Exercise Defender 23, which will demonstrate some of the interoperability Austin referenced.

“You’re a great partner,” Austin told Jonson. “We look forward to, very soon, being able to call you an ally.”

During his four­ day trip in Europe, Austin is expected to meet with the Swedish prime minister in Stockholm and to also travel south to Germany to host the 11th

meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.

As in past meetings of the UDCG, discussions are likely to revolve around providing continued support to Ukraine, both now and for the future, while at the same time ensuring the nations involved can maintain their own defense.

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz leaders and team members celebrated Earth Day 2023 with tree plantings at Rhine Ordnance Barracks and on Smith Barracks in Baumholder.

Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22 and is a celebration that honors the achievement of the Environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth's natural resources for future generations.

In honor of Earth Day 2023, Saturday, April 22nd, USAG­RP leaders took a moment to plant some trees!

At Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Garrison Commander Col. Reid E. Furman, alongside Truett Sanchez, Director of Public Works, and an enthusiastic group of RheinlandPfalz team members, planted a plum tree between buildings 162 and 164.

our commitment to the future, it is symbolic to our commitment to clean water, and our commitment to clean air.”

USAG Rheinland ­ Pfalz’s Environmental Management Division is on a mission to ensure the long­term sustainability of installations through compliance with Federal Environmental laws, the protection of natural and cultural resources, prevention of pol­

lution, environmental training and inspections and public outreach for the wellbeing of all RheinlandPfalz’s military community. There are lots of ways each one of us can contribute to conserving our Earth, and our environment. For example, avoid using singleuse plastic products and instead use reusable water bottles and shopping bags. You can conserve water by fixing leaky faucets and shorten­

ing showers and you can save gas by insulating indoor areas.

BAD WIMPFEN from Page 1 History

Every season brings a few traditional and non­traditional activities for this once very booming town. Known as the Imperial Town, Bad Wimpfen was believed to have been founded around 450 BC. A huge part of its history involved constant struggles for control because of the intersecting three rivers. Until 1952 the medieval town belonged to the Hesse region and then became part of the state of Baden­Württemberg.

The Blue Tower (Blaue Turm)

Built between 1160 and 1170, the Blue Tower of Bad Wimpfen is still open as a museum today. A tower­keeper, who still lives here, has the responsibility for the care and maintenance of the tower, and offers opportunities for tourists to learn about the tower’s history.

The 360­degree panoramic from the tower of the valley is breathtaking. It is said that the tower has a fire every 150 years. The facade and exterior have changed a little over time in terms of functionality and style. It costs just a few Euro for visitors to walk the tower and take in the site. Within walking distance is the Red Tower (RoteTurm). You can also visit this tower, although it is climb at your own risk.

In a country full of castles, it’s good to know you can visit quite a few just by following the Castles Road. The Castles Road is a 1,200 km trail weaving through the countryside of Germany to Prague. This route is ideal, especially if you have visitors with a short amount of time wishing to have a taste of Germany’s castles.

The road begins in Mannheim and weaves through Heidelberg, Bad Wimpfen, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, to Nürnberg and then all the way to Prague. The enchanted Burgenstrasse is not just an incredible trip of castles, chocolate and wine but also health and restoration. Bad Wimpfen is almost the half­way point along the road and is a great stop along the route.

Visitors might be amazed with what’s next around the bend while touring through parts of Germany. On our tour between the two towers we saw school children practicing jousting and archery.

The footpaths to the quaint downtown shopping area of Bad Wimpfen are lined with historical, handmade crafts and gifts for the most distinguished shopper. There are also lots of great choices for coffee, cake, lunch, wine, and more. Our group enjoyed a traditional Swabian menu of Maultaschen (a pasta dough filled traditionally with minced meat and spinach) and Gemüsesalat (vegetable salad).”

How to get there

By car, Bad Wimpfen is a just over 1 hour and 30 minutes east of Kaiserslautern. It’s less than an hour north of Stuttgart, and 1 hour and 40 minutes drive southeast of Wiesbaden. Please visit DB Bahn for train details.
