Egg painting, festivals, bonfires, Easter games and feasts all partially sum up a traditional German Easter weekend. Many Easter traditions first began in Germany, and to this day, Easter is one of Germany’s most celebrated holidays. In fact, the first chocolate Easter bunny was made in Germany in the 1800s.

elebrated alongside chocolate bunnies and the resurrection is the coming of spring. Colorful decorations begin popping up in some German villages like spring flowers and painted eggs hanging from tree branches. Celebrating Easter in Germany gives you the opportunity to incorporate a few of these German traditions and add an interesting twist to your Easter holiday weekend. Here are a few ways you can celebrate Easter like a German.
—DECORATE— It is traditional for Germans to decorate a tree in their yard with hand-painted eggs. It is also common to cut branches from trees and bring them inside and decorate them. To prepare the eggs for hanging, insert two small holes on either side of an egg with a small needle while carefully breaking up the yokes inside. Next, gently blow out the insides through one of the holes
until only the shell is left. Decorate your eggs to your liking, and with a glue stick, dab glue next to each other so you can glue both ends of a ribbon to form a loop. Hang your eggs on your tree or branch and you’ve officially decorated like a German. —DAYS OF EASTER— Green Thursday (Gründonnerstag): Although some celebrate Green Thursday more than others, it is a tradition for Germans to eat something green on this day, such as spinach, leeks or peas. Green Thursday is a regular working day for most, and in recognition of its other meaning, the Last Supper, some Christians also attend an evening church service to have their feet washed. Good Friday (Karfreitag): Everything is quiet and Germans are off work through Easter Monday. Families share a relaxing day out like going for a long walk. They also tend to avoid
meat throughout the day, so a fish and/or vegetable dinner is quite traditional. Some Christians attend Mass in remembrance of Jesus dying on the cross. During Mass a candle is lit then kept until Easter morning so it can be lit again at the breakfast table. Good Friday is a day to relax and prepare for Easter morning. Saturday: Easter markets are a great way to spend Easter Saturday, while some families prefer a quieter day that includes exchanging decorated eggs or making Easter “nests” (baskets) for the children. Family, friends and the Easter bunny periodically drop gifts in the nests until Easter Monday. Some smaller, more religious German towns will attend a Saturday night service and then a bonfire. A tractor and wagon drive through the villages gathering tree branches people have left out in front of their houses. The branches are brought to one pile for a bonfire and residents gather to acknowledge
not only the rising of Christ, but the end of winter and coming of spring. Easter Sunday (Ostern): While the sun is still down, some celebrate the Easter rising by re-lighting their Good Friday candle, followed by a breakfast with sausage, eggs and Easter bread. The day is spent going to Easter morning church service, going on Easter egg hunts and playing games. Every now and then children will peak to see what goodies have appeared in their nest from family and friends. A traditional Easter dinner is lamb, potatoes and vegetables followed by a traditional lamb or bunny-shaped cake (Osterlamm), which is made with flour, eggs, butter and powdered sugar. Easter Monday (Ostermontag): Easter Monday is a non-working holiday and a time to relax. On this day, family and friends usually take turns visiting each other. Now, be proud that you celebrated your Easter holiday like a German!

Vulcanic lakes or “Maars” at Naturpark Vulkaneifel

If you’re looking for a day trip that blends interesting history, fascinating geology, beautiful driving, and outdoor activities, Germany’s Vulkaneifel region is a must.
A quiet land that wasn’t always so quiet As with most German words, Vulkaneifel seems solid and efficient, since it brings together a descriptor (Vulkan) and a place name (Eifel). In this case, the place is straightforward enough: The Eifel is a beautiful, quiet region split between North Rhine-Westphalia and Rheinland-Pfalz, and it lies east of Luxembourg and southern Belgium. But Vulkan means ‘volcano.’ And volcanoes are awesome — especially extinct volcanoes. However, the land beneath the Vulkaneifel region is far from extinct, volcanically speaking. The Eifel volcanoes were formed from something that geologists call a “hot spot,” which is interesting because it’s not related to tectonic plates, like most other volcanic activity is. So even though the region’s nearly two dozen ancient volcanoes are now just lovely tree-covered hills rising from the horizon, the hot spot beneath the Vulkaneifel is still active. That being said, the last volcanic eruption in Germany was approximately 10,000 years ago, which is relatively recent in geological time. But still long enough ago that the area is perfect for modern visitors. What to do As one might expect, the Vulkaneifel is excellent for outdoor activities, including hiking, walking, and cycling. It also offers some of the most beautiful and relaxing driving in Germany. But to really do German volcano country, it’s best to get out there and get your feet wet —sometimes literally. Highlights include: Swim in a maar: A maar is a lake that has formed in a volcanic crater. Technically, maars are not ‘crater lakes’ because they were formed by gas punching holes through the earth. But they’re still beautiful, and they’re still outstanding places to swim, soak, sail, and relax when the temperatures get warmer. Some of the best ones include the Meerfelder Maar and the Pulvermaar Nature Pool.
Visit the Windsborn Kratersee: Okay, so this is an actual crater lake – the only one north of the Alps, in fact. It’s a lovely, almost mesmerizing place, especially when considering that it was once a seething, lava-filled volcano. Though swimming isn’t allowed, there is a nice hike that takes visitors around the lake. Hike to the Dreimühlen waterfall: Waterfalls are always cool, but this one is especially interesting because it grows each year (approximately 10 cm, but still), thanks to its unique geological makeup. Located near Nohn, the waterfall is approximately a mile away from the parking area, and is worth it. Visit the Wingertsbergwand: If you want to get a glimpse of what a volcanic eruption does to the earth, you have to visit the Wingertsbergwand. A monument with a 150-foot-tall cliff, this place is a must for those interested in volcanoes. Open year-round, the site offers great information — it’s basically like reading a diary of an eruption — and is easily accessible. When to go The Vulkaneifel is beautiful year-round. Warmer weather is better, of course, to take advantage of swimming or any activities related to the maars. But the scenery is drop-dead gorgeous in the autumn. And even winters are fantastic, especially when the Dreimühlen waterfall freezes. Getting there By car, reaching the Vulkaneifel region is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from Kaiserslautern. THASSOS: NOT YOUR TYPICAL GREEK ISLAND

Thassos, a Greek island in the north Aegean Sea, is like something from a dream. It is April, and the sea is warm enough for swimming. We are on Paradise Beach, standing on a vast swath of white sand lapped by turquoise water. Our children race into the surf and giggle with excitement. I swivel my head in both directions. We are alone. On a beautiful beach in Europe? A miracle.
B
ut Thassos isn’t your typical Greek island. There are few blue roofs, suntanning glitterati, or towering rectangular seaside hotels. Instead, there are long stretches of remote coastline and mountains — big ones — in the island’s interior. A few hours after Paradise Beach, I am standing on a rugged peak. A verdant valley, filled with olive trees and wandering goats, lies far below. Beyond the island, the sea sparkles in the late afternoon sun. Were it not for the sound of tinkling bells drifting up from the distant goat herd, I might have thought I had the entire island to myself. In the scheme of things, I kind of did. Thassos in spring is a sparsely populated revelation, which means it is fantastic for visitors who are seeking adventure spiced with a bit of solitude.

FROM THEN UNTIL NOW Accessible by ferry and located a short drive from Thessaloniki, Thassos’ distinct feel begins with its fascinating history. The island has been famous for millennia for its pure white marble, which was used by many ancient cultures — including Greeks and Romans — to build statues and monuments throughout the region. Today, visitors can see white marble literally everywhere. Huge slabs lie along coastlines, in mountainside quarries, and along trails. Through virtue of its position near the European mainland, the island has seen a myriad of cultures and conquerors during the past 2,000 years. As a result, most centuryago residents of Thassos chose to live inland, far from the coast, where they could farm and herd in relative peace from marauding maritime visitors. Nowadays, that historical lack of coastal development means that Thassos has a wealth of charm. Gorgeous, remote beaches can be found at various points around the island. Cozy coastal cottages can be had for great bargains, especially outside of the summer high season. Rugged trekking is available: Mount Ypsarion towers nearly 4,000 feet above sea level and offers views to Turkey on clear days. Other than having to occasionally dodge very aggressive small trucks, the driving is fantastic — twisty narrow roads, impossibly located mountain villages, and beautiful views of mountains, forests, monasteries, and the sea. One of the best parts of Thassos, though, is knowing you are on an island. When you sit on a boulder overlooking the sea and watch the sun set on the mainland, it is good to know you are a world away from regular life and responsibility. For me, Thassos wasn’t just a place to find adventure. It was just plain good for the soul.

Bonus points if you’re there during Greek Orthodox Easter, which offers fantastic opportunities to celebrate the biggest holiday of the Greek year with locals.

NORTHERN WALES:
SMALL PLACE, BIG ADVENTURE

Let’s begin in the ivy-shrouded tea room at river’s edge. Located near one end of the ancient stone bridge that spans the river from the valley village of Llanwrst, it looks like a hobbit house or something from a fairy tale. But this place — the Tu-Hwnt-I’r Bont tea room — is sturdy and real. We duck through solid wooden stable doors and nestle up to a worn table near a crackling fire. Biting rain swirls outside, and no matter. Here, in the coziest spot in northern Wales, we take a cup of tea, a warm plate of bread and melted cheese known as Welsh rarebit, and get down to discussing the wonders that surround us.
T
ake the mountains. They’re everywhere, and are remarkable in their diversity. Jagged peaks loom in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. Wild moors, golden and windswept, cover treeless hills as far as the eye can see. Emerald forests swallow valleys and stretch along ridges. In Wales, one doesn’t hike these hills. One walks them. And they make for quite the walk. On a March morning at dawn, for instance, an hour of lung-busting uphill walking has brought me to the top of Ro Wen, a bold, bald ridge that towers above the village of Dolwyddelan. The sky is clear and snow covers distant peaks, testament to last night’s weather. I can’t admire the view for long, though. Hundred-kilometer-per-hour
winds scream in from the sea: they are strong enough to topple me. I crouch behind an ancient stone wall and register the brilliant colors — golds, greens, whites, and blues. I would love to linger, but the wind has no intention of relenting. It is time to descend. Then there is the sea, which is never far from even the most hidden mountain valley. This proximity to the water is a feature that makes northern Wales special, locals say: you can find so much natural beauty in one compressed spot. The Welsh coast contains multitudes. There’s Conwy, for example, a safe harbor that is home to a magnificent castle and the UK’s smallest house. Less than an hour to the west, one can visit the wild, steep cliffs near Trefor, which offer spectacular sea views as well as narrow sheep trails that lead
to smooth stone beaches and hidden coves. Finally, and naturally, northern Wales is a place of good cheer. Cozy cottages, warm pubs, fireplaces, and friendly people can be found everywhere. Shelter is an art form here, and few things are so comfortable as coming in from the wild. Some of the best tea rooms in the world are found in northern Wales, like Tu-Hwnt-I’r Bont or Ty Hyll, located in the woods near Betws-y-Coed and now known by English speakers as the (very inaptly named) Ugly House. No matter your preference — comfort or the wilds — you can find it in northern Wales, where the food is hearty, the tea is grand, and the scones with jam and cream are sublime. Adventure beckons. Answer the call. You won’t be disappointed.

“I’m sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea…” If you are now singing STYX’s ‘Come Sail Away,’ you’re welcome. And now you’re asking yourself, ‘how great would it be to actually be on a boat?’ If you’re now singing ‘I’m On a Boat’ by The Lonely Island, you’re welcome again. But really, how cool would that be?

ou are in luck! There just so happens to be an entire week devoted to sailing and all things nautical right here in Germany. Dubbed as the greatest sailing event in the world, this nine-day festival includes more than 2,000 events. Millions of visitors arrive from all over the world just to celebrate Kieler Woche. Celebrating its 143rd birthday on June 17, the city of Kiel turns into a utopia of yachts, regattas, and various sailing events, with more than 5000 yachtsmen and women. More commonly known as Kiel Sailing City, the traditional opening ceremonies kick off the week on Saturday June 17 by ringing a ship’s bell with three double rings and one single ring. All sailing events take place at the Kiel-Schilksee Olympic Center. Starting with a single regatta in 1882, Kiel Week has turned into the largest sailing event in the world. Since then, participation has soared and sailors from more than 50 countries compete in 40 sailing classes. The culminating event of the week is the Windjammer Parade. Taking place on the inner fjord with a variety of large and traditional boats, this event is the highlight of the festival week for tens of thousands of spectators. But this week is not just for sailors and maritime enthusiasts. The Kieler Woche Festival begins the following day, June 17, and lasts through June 25. More than three million visitors from all over the globe enjoy various activities including sailing, musical performances, unique culinary experiences, and presentations ranging on topics from

politics to science. Simultaneously, the Spiellinie (kids’ playground and festival area) provides Europe’s largest open-air cultural event for children. The area offers a multitude of activities including painting, building, and children singersongwriter concerts. Those who are in the mood for more action can let off steam on the TAT-Team’s bouncy house or join in one of the daily children’s concerts at 3 p.m. on the open-air stage. In addition to Matthias und die Zappelbande, the choirs of the Kiel Opera and music school, the band Randale from Bielefeld will finally rock the stage again this year. Music lovers can enjoy a unique open-air theater and a concert series with exceptional artists and can look forward to unforgettable evenings. Throughout the day, there are a variety of events including a culinary exhibition with around 30 nations presenting their culinary and cultural specialties. Visitors can see fireworks nearly every night and hot-air balloons take flight to light up the sky on the evenings near the end of the week. The city of Kiel is about a sixhour car ride (depending on traffic) from the KMC area. However, there is plenty of time to make travel plans. Beyond Kieler Woche, surrounding towns join in on the festivities holding their own versions of Kieler Festivals. Despite the distance, this might be a great excuse to continue on to Denmark, just an hour north. Regardless of how you get there, be sure not to miss this fantastic event!

USAG RHEINLAND-PFALZ 2023 EASTER SERVICES
EGG CARTON FLOWERS This craft is the perfect way to use empty egg cartons. Simply cut, paint, and glue for a lovely floral craft. Supplies: • acrylic paint or water color paint • cardboard egg carton • sturdy straw, paper or plastic • pom poms • scissors • glue • paint brush Instructions: First you will cut out a block of four containers from the egg carton. Trim neatly around the edges to add a rounder shape for the petals of the flower. Squirt a small amount of acrylic paint, in various colors, onto a paper plate for the kids to paint their flowers. Any colors will do, but pastels are recommended. After the paint flowers have dried, attach a straw “stem” by gluing one on the back. Sturdy straws are recommended in order to hold up the flower. Using a flimsier material, like a pipe cleaner could bend under the weight. For the last step, choose a colored pom pom and glue that to the center of the painted egg carton. Prepare many flowers to create a bouquet.
STAINED GLASS KITES Flying kites is a great way to spend a windy afternoon. If the weather isn’t agreeing with you, try making one of these paper kites to decorate your windows instead. Supplies: • sheets of black construction paper • ½-inch strips of black construction paper • scrap pieces of black construction paper (from cutting out the kites) • assorted colors of tissue paper – you can cut it into squares or let your kids tear pieces • clear contact paper • yarn or ribbon • colored construction paper scraps Instructions: Cut a kite shape from black construction paper, saving the scraps. Next, cut out the center of the kite, leaving about a 1-inch frame. Tape a piece of clear Contact paper, sticky side up, on the table. Stick your kite onto the paper, frame-side down and create a design with black paper strips or shapes. You could do traditional cross-shape strips, or create a unique pattern for the back of your kite. Cut or tear colored tissue paper into small pieces. Cover the kite in colorful paper. When the kite has been completely covered with tissue paper, seal over top of it with another piece of clear contact paper. For best results, stick the cover sheet to one end of the kite and slowly press it down over the tissue paper, smoothing out any bumps. Cut off extra pieces around the kite and attach a ribbon or yarn “tail” with glue or tape. Cut bow shapes out of construction paper and glue along the tail to create bows. Remember to leave a small space between the popsicle sticks, so that it has the look of a picket fence. Use four sticks vertically and place two sticks diagonally to create your fences. Set your fences aside to dry completely. Once they have dried, paint the fences completely white. Allow paint to dry. Finish by attaching stickers, glitter, and any other decorations that you choose. Toddlers and Preschoolers – Even the tiniest of kiddos can start to learn about responsibility. Small children actually love lending a hand. The key is to make sure the chore matches their readiness level. Natural consequences are a great place to start. This is not punishing someone for making a mess, but involving them in the solution to the mess. For example, if your two year old spills some milk, simply say, “Uh-oh, I see there’s milk on the table. Let’s wipe it up” — handing a towel to your child in a cheerful way. If a toddler tosses their carrots on the floor, guide them to pick them up and place them in the trash. “Now our floor is clean!” Your preschoolers are completely capable of chores that involve putting in and taking out. Carrying their own dishes to the sink, putting toys in a toy box, taking the dirty towels out of the bathroom to the laundry room, empty wastebaskets, etc. Early Elementary School – These are your kindergarteners, first and second graders. The word Helper is still really powerful with this age group. Have your child be in charge of wiping off the table after meals, spraying the household plants with a spray bottle, filling the dog’s water dish. Your child will feel good about making a contribution to the family. They are helping the family have a clean table for the next meal. Keeping the plants happy and alive. Giving the beloved family pet a fresh drink. For spring specific tasks, pulling weeds is pretty straight forward and helps the flowers have space to grow. Packing up winter clothes to put in the attic involves sorting and makes space for our swimsuits and shorts! Sweeping, vacuuming and loading the dishwasher are also realistic chores for this age group. Don’t forget to have your child be responsible for keeping a tidy room! Intermediate Elementary School – Children in the range of nine to twelve years should be fully capable of responsible behavior. Packing their own backpack, sorting laundry, making and packing lunch. These are all realistic day to day chores. Clearing away is really gratifying at this age. Moping floors, raking leaves, sweep the outdoor steps. Sorting is also age appropriate and satisfying work — emptying the silverware tray from the dishwasher, helping find matching socks in the clean laundry basket, stacking canned food on the shelf. Spring has sprung! Birds are chirping, bees are humming and flowers are popping up everywhere! Indoors, however, the climate has more of a perfect storm vibe — junky, chaotic, cluttered. Well, grab a broom — or better yet — shove a broom into your 10 year old’s hands and let’s get to work! Here are some household chores based on age group to get everyone in the family tidying up like Mary Poppins!
elementary aged kids are ready for some altruism. Have your child fill up a whole box of toys to donate to a needy child. To truly foster kindness and selflessness, however, be sure not to “reward” this gesture with a tangible item. Extrinsic rewards can undermine internal kindness. Instead, reflect on the experience and use growth mindset praise. For example, “Wow - there are so many toys in this box for a child who does not have toys. What do you think about that?” Middle and High School – Your teenagers are very capable of more rigorous chores, but may not be ready for the tasks that require keen judgment and complex problem solving. Think: allow the teenager to mow the lawn, but maybe don’t let them do any maintenance on the mower, like un-jamming the blade. Examples of realistic weekly chores include washing the windows, walking the dog, washing the car, setting the table, stripping the sheets from the beds and starting the laundry machine. Trust me, you want your teens to know how to do a load of laundry, so they’re not visiting you when they’re 22 just to raid your fridge and have you wash their skivvies! An important, albeit tricky, part of this is follow-through. Teens can use chore apps to be self-accountable for their tasks. Paid jobs are also age appropriate and motivating. Offer your teen a set sticker price for heavy duty work, like removing the junk from the basement to take to the dump. Babysitting siblings is also a great way for your teen to learn responsibility and earn some fun money. If you are not keen on monetary payment, you can also use privileges as a motivator. A few words of advice – keep your expectations realistic. It’s better to have your child enthusiastically participate while doing a so-so job. Perfection does not exist. Praise always feels good, so keep the positive words flowing! Be specific with your instructions — e.g. “Pick up all of the dirty clothes on your bedroom floor and put them in the hamper” instead of “Clean your room.” A Chore Chart can be a useful tool. In addition to your day to day chart, you may include a special spring cleaning chart for the big overhaul jobs. Happy Spring (Cleaning)! HEATHER AND HIKING BELGIUM’S HOGE KEMPEN NATIONAL PARK

Belgium’s Hoge Kempen National Park is an oasis for day trippers or weekend visitors. Small but mighty, Hoge Kempen features some of the country’s most unique flora and fauna, as well as miles of trails that are perfect for hikers and bikers. As a bonus, it’s located near the entertaining city of Genk. Strange beauty When it comes to first impressions, Belgium’s Hoge Kempen National Park might give you whiplash. The drive to the park winds through tidy villages and thick forests. And yet, once you leave the parking lot, the main path into the park is surrounded by terrain that feels as if it could have come from the deserts of the American southwest. And then, you turn the corner and find a sandy beach and large lake with a wondrous playground for children of all ages. But, turn up a scrubby hill and you’ll plunge into a cool pine forest. A hiker’s (or biker’s) paradise Though the park is only 22 square miles, it contains more than 120 miles of trails, including lots of short loops that are family- and dog-friendly. Hitting the trails is the best part of Hoge Kempen, for many reasons. First, you can find solitude fast. This isn’t as obvious as it might seem, since the national park is located in one of the most densely populated parts of Europe. But the sheer number and variety of trails make it almost certain that you can get some quiet time (or at least some ‘alone with excited and noisy kids’ time). Secondly, the trails display all the beauty that the park has to offer. They wind around and through some of Belgium’s most stunning natural scenery, including sprawling fields of purple heather pocked here and there by black bogs. In a thirty-minute stretch, you can feel like you’re in Italy (the aforementioned beach), Arizona, and Scotland. It’s not a bad deal. The trails also allow you to get glimpses of some of the rarer wildlife in Belgium. Birdwatchers love Hoge Kempen, and even people who aren’t into ornithology find
themselves impressed when they spot a falcon or hawk. If you’re lucky (and if you find yourself there on a sunny summer day), you might also see a lizard or even a rare smooth snake. A fun bonus: nearby Genk Although the name might sound funny to an English-speaker, Genk is an absolute blast. A 10-minute drive from Hoge Kempen, it offers plenty to do for an overnight or weekend trip. Visitors can find a variety of interesting shops, restaurants or bars. Family fun is there for the taking, too: it’s easy to rent a bike for a city tour or a quick trip to Genk’s famous “Cycling Through Water” experience (which is really cool!). Other highlights include Karting Genk, where basically anyone can drive a winding Formula One-style track in a surprisingly powerful go-kart, or a trip to see Genk’s footballl club, Racing Genk. When to go Hoge Kempen National Park is excellent during every season, but is especially vivid in the autumn when the heather turns the park purple and the green pines seem to glow. As with most national parks, Hoge Kempen is busier during the summer. Getting there By car, Hoge Kempen National Park is approximately 3 hours, 15 minutes from Kaiserslautern. Due to regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, travel to neighboring countries may not be allowed. Please verify the status before making plans to attend. HOT CROSS BUNS RECIPE
Happy Easter!

Buns: • 3 teaspoons instant or rapid rise yeast (9 grams) • 1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar (superfine sugar) • 1 1/2 cups (375ml) milk, warm • 4 1/4 cups (640g) bread flour (or plain / allpurpose) • 2 tsp cinnamon powder • 2 tsp All Spice • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 1/2 cups (210g) sultanas • 1-2 oranges, zest only • 3.5 tbsp (50g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled • 1 egg Extra flour for dough: • 1/4 cup (35g) extra bread flour (if needed) Crosses: • 1/2 cup (75g) allpurpose flour • 5 tbsp water Glaze: • 1 tbsp apricot jam • 2 tsp water

The spiced sweet buns, marked with a cross on the top, are traditionally enjoyed on Good Friday and are way easier to make than you think.
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Add lukewarm water in a medium sized bowl, add the yeast and 2 teaspoons of the sugar, whisk and then leave for 5-10 minutes until it froths. 2. Place flour, remaining sugar, salt, yeast and spices in a bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook or a regular bowl and mix to combine. 3. Make a well in the center. Add the butter, egg, zest and sultanas 4. Mix until a smooth elastic dough forms (around 5 min on speed 2 in the stand mixer) or just enough so that the dough doesn’t stick to the side of the bowl anymore. If needed add some of the extra flour up to 1/4 cup. The dough is kneaded enough when you can stretch it between your fingers without it ripping. 5. Leave dough in the bowl, cover with a damp (clean) kitchen towel and place in a warm place to rise for around 1 1/2 - 2 hours or until it triples in size and is bubbly on the surface. Forming The Buns: 1. Line a 9 x 13” (31.5 x 23.5 cm) baking tray with baking paper. 2. Remove kitchen towel and punch dough to deflate. 3. Dust work surface with flour, place dough on work surface. Dust top of dough then knead lightly and shape it into a log. Cut into 12 equal pieces. 4. Take one piece and press down slightly with palm, then fold in the edges by pressing them into
the center of the dough. With the seal side down roll the dough in your hand on the work surface until a ball forms. 5. Place the ball with the smooth side up on the tray. Repeat with remaining dough. Line them up 3 x 4. 6. Place a lightly oiled cling wrap over the tray to keep the buns from drying out. 7. Let the buns rise in a warm place for 45-60 min or until they almost doubled in size. 8. Halfway through the rise preheat oven to 350F (180C). Crosses: 1. Mix flour and water until a thin paste forms (not too thin or it will run everywhere when it’s in the oven) 2. Spoon into a round 3 mm piping bag or small plastic bag then snip corner. 3. Remove the cling wrap and pipe crosses onto the buns. Baking and Glaze: 1. Bake for 22 minutes, or until the surface is a deep golden brown. The surface color is the best test for this recipe. 2. While the buns bake in the oven place the jam and water for the glaze in a microwave safe bowl and microwave it for 30 seconds, then mix to combine. 3. Remove buns from oven, place them on a cooling rack, brush them with jam mixture while warm.

Seewoog in Miesenbach If you’re looking for a great, free park not too far from home, this is your best bet. Located in Miesenbach, the Seewoog is a small park surrounding a lake with plenty of greenspace to picnic, lounge in the sun, or play games. There is a playground area for children, as well as a bike path that loops around the recreation area. A beer garden is close by that offers food and drinks (make sure to bring Euro with you!). If that doesn’t please your taste buds, an Italian restaurant is within walking distance of the park. Gartenschau Kaiserslautern From life-size dinosaur statues to beer gardens, you’ll be sure to spend hours at this vast park located in the heart of Kaiserslautern. The main attraction is of course the dinosaurs, but stay for the beautiful gardens and topiaries, miniature golf course, and delicious food and beer, not to mention the huge play area for your children, so you actually have time to enjoy that cold beer. The Gartenschau opens April 1, and has events
every so often, from concerts to art exhibits, so make sure to check their website to see what they have planned. Admission is €7 for adults, and free for children under the age of six. www.gartenschau-kl.de/
TiLu Adventure Kaiserslautern If you want a little more adventure than your normal park, look no further than the TiLu Kletterwald (climbing forest) at Froehnerhof located just 5 minutes east of Kaiserslautern. Here you can climb through obstacles in the treetops, but don’t worry if you’ve never done it before; they have courses for beginners as well as expert climbers. They also offer archery lessons, if you’ve ever wanted to learn how to use a bow and arrow! Prices for a 2.5-hour climb range from €17 to €22 based on age. www.kletterwaldkaiserslautern. de/
