Ukrainian NCOs, CMSAF, visit, study in KMC

U.S. Air Forces in Europe Air Forces Africa

Noncommissioned officers from Ukraine’s Air Force and National Guard, along with the Ukrainian Armed Forces Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force, visited and studied in the Kaiserslautern Military Community for three weeks in March.

Ukrainian NCOs study at IEAFA

The Inter-European Air Force Academy on Kapaun Air Station, Germany, hosted 49 Ukrainian NCOs for a three-week course — marking the first time IEAFA has offered a course designed for and offered to only Ukrainian forces.

During the course, students strengthened their knowledge, focusing on professional military education, air base defense, tactical combat casualty care and women’s peace and security.

“We challenged the students with numerous lessons and tasks, testing their followership, leadership, problem-solving, and teambuilding capabilities,” said Master Sgt. Craig Crabtree, IEAFA course director. “I can say with utmost confidence that the Ukrainian NCO students exceeded every expectation, and that we [IEAFA instructors and other cadre] are the ones that are honored and grateful to have had this opportunity with them.”

Ukraine’s military is undergoing a shift from a soviet-era ranking system that is commissioned officer-centric to a more westernstyle rank and tier structure, focusing heavily on the enlisted force, particularly the NCO corps.

“It is the enlisted force that makes the mission possible, and we know this to be true in your military as well,” said Col. Beth Lane, U.S. Air Forces in Europe Air Forces Africa International Affairs Division chief, during class graduation. “Your leadership, though not necessarily acknowledged by job title, has a profound impact on those around you.”

On average, IEAFA holds 7 to 8 courses per year to a multitude

Along with the 49 IEAFA students, the Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Kostiantyn Stanislavchuk, came along for the three-week visit.

Chief Stanislavchuk had key leader engagements throughout USAFE, NATO Air Command, U.S. European Command and more. He delivered a presentation titled ‘NCO Perspective from the Frontlines’ to

These engagements also further solidify the words of the U.S. commander-in-chief, echoing his message of “we’re in this with you.”

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Viktoria Senkiv serves her Air Force Reserve time out of the 910 Security Forces Squadron at Youngstown Air Reserve Station in northeast Ohio, but for the past year, the Ukraine native has been yearning to serve the people of her native country.

“I’ll never forget that night when it all started,” Senkiv said. “I was panicking because I wanted to do something for them, but at that moment I didn’t know what I could do.”

Months later, the answer to Airman Senkiv’s question was answered by a phone call.

“I got a call from my leadership, and I didn’t even listen to the whole deal, I just said ‘yes!’” Senkiv said. “The possibility for me to go and help, to do something, I just said yes right away. A few days later I packed my bags and now I’m here.”

A major focus for Stanislavchuk’s trip to Germany was the learning atmosphere at IEAFA.

“Operations have shown us first of all the importance of training, as in critical moments a service member acts based on their training and skillset gained,” Stanislavchuk said. “In the moment of internal contradiction, competency and training play a crucial role, allowing us to control the situation.”

The largest accomplishment of Stanislavchuk’s engagements was the establishment of face-to-face contact with his counterparts and key leaders to create relationships, which is better than a phone call. A

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz conducted its annual Real Property Planning Board March 22 at the Rheinlander Convention Center in the Baumholder Military Community. The board, attended by about 80 people in-person and virtually, acts as the installation "city planning council" for 50+ mission partners across the garrison’s 31 sites to ensure the orderly development and management of installation real property in support of missions, management processes, and achieving community objectives. From fiscal years 2023 through 2032, the garrison’s facility investment plan includes 337 projects valued at better than $2.8 billion. The RPPB also projected upcoming stationing movements in the garrison footprint and how those changes affect master planning. Maj. Gen. James Smith, commander, 21st Theater Sustainment Commander and the Army’s senior responsible officer for the region, and Tommy R. Mize, Installation Management Command-Europe Director, attended the event with Col. Reid E. Furman, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, serving as host.

Earth Day 2023 — “Invest in Our Planet”

The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student antiwar movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Over 20 million Americans demonstrated for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. The event was so successful, that in December 1970 Congress authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. As a result, Americans began honoring Earth

Day on the 22nd of April every year. In 1990, Earth Day went global in 141 countries and the event continues to spread internationally, providing a powerful focal point from which people can demonstrate their commitment to being good stewards of the environment. This year, more than 1 billion people in 192 countries worldwide will commemorate “Earth Day.”

Earth Day goals: More than just spreading awareness!

The aim for a clean environment continues with even more urgency, as the possibility of climate change becomes more apparent every day. Scientists worldwide have amassed evidence suggesting that the need to take action now is more important than ever. As we have seen in recent and past news, larger and more frequent natural catastrophes such as floods, storms and other natural catastrophes are occurring, costing millions of lives and destroying the livelihood of even more. If we do not rethink our consumer behavior, we could steer our communities into an ecological crisis. We do not have to give up our lifestyles in order to affect a change; we only need to make smarter decisions. Small changes in our lifestyle can make a big difference. And everyone can do them without experiencing a significant cut to their day to day business. There is a popular movement toward “sustainable consumerism” occurring in e.g., Europe and the US, which promotes purchasing goods that are produced with the minimum amount of resource consumed in the production of those goods. A large supermarket provides goods that are grown thousands of miles away, sometimes in a location that requires extensive irrigation. Why not change the demand signal by going to a local farmer’s market? Farmer’s markets require minimal

resources in order to produce goods that provide as much, if not more, benefit to the consumer — you. Did you know that many nearby cities, including Kaiserslautern, hold regular farmer’s markets? And there are even more possibilities to easily change the negative impact by doing simple things such as changing your conventional light bulbs to energy-saving bulbs, such as LED (light emitting diode) or CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulbs. These bulbs are more efficient and use 80% less energy while lasting up to 10 times longer. Imagine, just replacing 10 bulbs could pay for themselves within one year, saving you about $25 annually, and reducing 14 kg of carbon emissions from being produced by electrical companies each year. Additionally, turning off electronics, or even unplugging them, instead of keeping them on standby, will save both energy and money, as will washing your clothes at a lower temperature to reduce hot water bills. Do you need to use your car for short distances? Walking is healthy and your wallet will be grateful. Finally, did you know that for every degree Celsius less in room temperature, you will consume about 10% less energy – again a win/win situation for your wallet and for the environment.

Earth Day 2023 theme: “Invest in Our Planet”

Each year, Earth Day campaigners call for events with an annual altering theme. In the US, the 2023 Earth Day theme is “Invest in Our Planet.”

The scientific evidence is clear and irrefutable — human activity is causing our planet to warm at an alarming rate.  International bodies of scientists have warned that we have just over a decade to halve our emissions to avoid the most devastating impacts of climate change on our food supply, national security, global health, extreme weather, and more.

Kaiserslautern American Page 6 April 14, 2023

How can you contribute?

Get informed. Knowledge is power –learn more about the science behind our climate challenge and the responsibility that all sectors hold in addressing the issue. Add your voice to the issues that are shaping the climate debate as well as emerging, evidencebased data that directly relates to changes in our climate.

Hold yourself accountable. Take a personal inventory of your own personal impact on the planet. Consider offsetting carbon emissions by investing in clean and renewable energy projects around the world that support local communities, drive sustainable development, and protect our planet. Other ways to get involved include donating and working towards a zero-waste lifestyle.

Unplug. Can you use energy more efficiently at home? Unplug items when they aren’t in use, by goods with high energyefficient standards, and consider making the switch to renewable energy. All of these can help to help reduce your personal impact.

Travel smarter. Transportation is now the largest source of carbon emissions in the United States. No matter where you live, travel by car or airplane contributes heavily to our shared carbon footprint. Take public transit, biking, or walking when possible –it’s good for your health, your wallet, and the planet.

Climate action, one bite at a time. Your food’s carbon footprint, called its foodprint, is the greenhouse gas emissions produced by growing, harvesting, processing, transporting, cooking, and disposing of the food we eat. Research has revealed the

tremendous impact that the mass production of meat, dairy, and eggs has on our planet. Additionally, food waste is an enormous ‘hidden’ contributor to climate change. In fact, if global food waste were a country, it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter, behind China and the U.S. The carbon footprint of this wasted food is about 3.3 billion tons of CO2. Luckily, there has never been a better time to join efforts to reduce our carbon footprint through food choices. Enjoy more plant-based meals, reduce your food waste altogether, and compost your food scraps. Bon appétit!

Shop smarter. Do you know where your dollar is going? Support companies driven by sustainability and committed to transparency throughout the supply chain. Your power as a consumer can be enormously impactful, so if you’re in the dark or unhappy with a company’s impact on the planet, make your voice known! Shop smarter with thoughtful purchasing to minimize waste, and consider reused and pre-loved items to take part in the circular economy and keep goods out from filling our already overflowing landfills.

How does the KMC officially celebrate Earth Day 2023?

Besides the tree planting events with elementary school students on Ramstein and tree planting ceremony with 86 AW, 86 CEG Leadership and German Forest Departments, more activities will take place that week from 17 till 21 of April on Ramstein. Ramstein Intermediate School students will participate in a guided tour through the base-owned water supply plant, where most of the potable water used at RAB is treated, stored, maintained and controlled. The attendees learn about the technical equipment used to clean and protect this important natural resource!

And boy scouts will install self-constructed bat boxes in installation’s forest areas. Please also keep a lookout for daily Earth Day challenges, posted on 86 Civil Engineering Squadron and official Ramstein Air Base Facebook page, for the chance to win some Earth Day swag!

Another great opportunity to demonstrate your environmental stewardship is to

recycle during the “clean where you work” and “clean where you live” events on 18th and 19th Apr. Look out for detail information from you housing office and facility manager.

If you have another event in mind, we are happy to support you putting it into practice, if not for this year’s Earth Day, then definitely for the next!

For more environmental information, please contact the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron Installation Management Flight at 480-5086/7712 or email us at 86ces.cea@us.af.mil.

We are a group of professionals, dealing with natural resources, landscape protection, recycling, hazardous waste and material management, air emissions, contaminated soil remediation and other related topics. We are always ready and happy to support you and answer any environmental question or issue you may have.

37 AS pilot-physician paves way for women in aviation

Not unlike many other service members, U.S. Air Force Maj. Sandra Salzman, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot-physician, comes from a military family. This led her to begin her journey in the Wisconsin Air National Guard in January 2001 as an enlisted aerospace propulsion specialist, eventually becoming the only woman of the current 10 pilot-physicians in the Air Force.

As a young girl, Salzman grew up living on bases heavily populated with pilots, which first ignited her interest in aviation. Salzman’s mother arranged many field trips to an aircraft simulator for her Girl Scout troop. As an adult, her husband also took her to one of his flying lessons, cementing her passion in flying.

“I realized I could do that and I would prefer to pilot than be a passenger,” Salzman said.

For one month, Salzman flew for two hours after work to obtain her private flying license. Then, she commissioned as an officer and retrained as a pilot. After completing pilot training, she applied to fly with her home station where she was ultimately denied a flying position.

Getting the answer “No” for

flying was a familiar situation to Salzman and her family, she said.

Her mother, retired U.S. Air Force Col. Lesa Juday, commissioned through the Reserves Officers’ Training Corps in 1977 and attempted to pursue a career flying helicopters. However, she was also turned away.

Instead of letting it deter Juday from becoming a service mem-

ber, she overcame the rejection to become a judge advocate general, or a military lawyer, and persisted in pursuit of her dreams while fighting for gender equality for women in the military.

Salzman used the same tenacity learned from her mother to keep pushing to accomplish her dreams and applied to three other Air National Guard units. She was accepted by all three, and chose to work with the 133rd Airlift Wing Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., to fly Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft.

Once she arrived, Salzman learned she was the only female pilot in her unit, although there were female loadmasters and crew chiefs.

Salzman said the flying culture in the Air Force at the time was very different than today. Many women felt there was a mindset that being pregnant meant they didn't want to fly. Because of this, Salzman said women in her unit were hiding their pregnancies until they were unable to.

Although many of the women were healthy, some, including Salzman, struggled with high-risk pregnancies and wondered if it was related to flying while pregnant.

When Salzman’s oldest child was born, he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and Malignant Myopia, a medical condition affecting a person’s nervous system and eyesight. She wanted answers and decided to pursue a medical degree and study pediatrics.

“Mom guilt is real,” Salzman said. “When my son [was diag-

By 2013, Salzman transitioned to active duty after attending the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine. Like all military training, USU is free of charge to its students. Before graduation, Salzman changed paths from pediatrics to study flight medicine and became a flight surgeon, adding another skill to her arsenal.

After earning her doctorate, Salzman worked with the Defense Health Agency to develop The Air Force Autism Navigator, a resource clinic for military families with children who have autism. The Autism Navigator is part of the Exceptional Family Member Program. It provides permanent change of station resources, and aims to reduce the amount of time children wait for medical care between duty stations.

nosed], I didn’t know if I caused it and that was scary.”

Salzman said the diagnoses brought on many questions, most of which went unanswered.

“You want to know: Should I feel guilty or not?” Salzman said. “I went to medical school to answer that question, and to figure out how to raise my child properly because I felt like I had no idea how to do that either.”

Before she could pursue her medical career, Salzman used her G.I. bill to pay for pre-med classes she hadn’t taken with her undergraduate degree in psychology.

It took a year of struggling to balance her family, work and school, but Salzman continued taking classes during her lunch break and studying for an hour after she tucked her kids in at night. Finally, she earned all the necessary credits to start medical school.

“My personal goals were to continue to be a good mom and wife, be predictable in my schedule, and make time for my family every day — just like I scheduled time for homework,” she said. “I would sometimes pick up my oldest son, who was five years old at the time, and bring him with me to the lunchtime class.”

To continue making time for her growing family during schooling, Salzman made sure to schedule weekly dates with her husband and have face-to-face time with him each night.

“I wanted to make sure my family was not lost in the pursuit of my dream,” Salzman said.

Salzman deployed in 2021 to the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, where she felt another calling after making connections with Airmen assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron. This time, it was to pursue a pilot-physician career through the Air Force PilotPhysician Program.

The Pilot-Physician Program takes Air Force officers qualified as both flight surgeons and pilots, and places them in units who specifically request a pilotphysician.

Salzman was approved by U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa to be stationed with the 37th AS in 2022, and is now one of 10 pilot-physicians in the Air Force. Out of those 10, she is the only woman.

With her expertise as a pilotphysician, Salzman can make recommendations to commanders and policymakers regarding aerospace medicine and implementing human considerations and human factor mitigation across the Air Force to help ensure the safety of aircrew. Currently, she is acting as the operational subject matter expert in the Air Force working group considering policy on pregnancy in aviation.

“If you have multiple interests, you can pursue multiple things,” she said. “My mother’s message was always to follow your dream. You don’t have to pick one thing, you just have to decide what you’ll do next. The things you’ve done before can add together to make you more valuable.”

Whether on or off duty, Salzman follows the example set for her by her mother — continuing the family legacy of paving the way for women in the military.

76 AS honors memory of Grant Davis

The 76th Airlift Squadron gathered for the annual Grant’s Ride memorial event at Ramstein Air Base, March 17.

This event is held to honor the memory of Staff Sgt. Grant Davis, 76th AS evaluator communications system operator who passed away in a cycling accident in 2016. The event is also held to promote bicycle safety to the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

I had the privilege of knowing and working with Grant, said Lt. Col. John Field, 76th AS commander. He was just the type of guy who was always there when you needed him.

Davis was stationed at RAB for five years, and in that time he was known for his commitment, dedication, and compassion in and out of the 76th AS office.

The event has been held every year since Davis’s passing in 2016 and has been a way to remember him as well as his love of cycling and fitness.

“It has been a tradition to honor Grant with a ride and to highlight one of his passions,” said Field. “This event also brings cycling safety into the spotlight here in the KMC.”

This year, participants of Grant’s Ride biked a total of 15 miles, stopping at the memorial site of Davis’s accident. They left flowers next to the memorial and held a moment of silence.

To end his speech, Field shared words from Davis’s memorial plaque that rests on the front of the 76th AS building.

“The light of life has been extinguished from a great man; his memory will be the light that guides us in the dark,” said Field. “He will be missed. son, husband, friend, Airman.”

First foreign fighter participates in Polish Armed Forces MMA Gala

Story and photos by Sgt. Andrew Jo 21st Theater Sustainment Command

WARSAW, POLAND — “Be All You Can Be.” The Army returns to this slogan after 22 years, but what does it mean for the Soldiers? For Sgt. 1st Class Johan Mackie, civil affairs senior sergeant, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, it provides

the opportunity to continue pursuing his passion: mixed martial arts.

“I’ve been fighting since I was thirteen. I had a really good friend growing up and he was a really good boxer and it’s because of him I got into boxing,” said Mackie.

Mackie, an immigrant from Sweden, started his career in the California National Guard as an infantryman in 2008 before tran-

sitioning to active duty. His first duty station was U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, South Korea where Mackie was a part of the United Nations Command Honor Guard.

“In Sweden at the time, you couldn’t fight professionally, and I wanted to fight professionally and become a world champion,” says Mackie. “That was actually the reason I came to the United States. I ended up joining the military to have a stable job and good income, and fortunately I’ve been able to fight a few times while in the military.”

While serving overseas in Korea, Mackie was given opportunities to continue his passion as a fighter. He was able to fight Nae Chul Kim in Taiwan.

“He was the 2009 Grand Prix World Champion in kickboxing and I was able to fight him in Taiwan while I was stationed in Korea. So I was able to fly to Taiwan and fight there,” said Mackie. “So there are

a lot of good opportunities in the military to do things that you’re passionate about.”

And once again, while serving overseas in Germany, he was given the opportunity to fight in a Polish Armed Forces Mixed Martial Arts Gala, on March 31, against Pfc. Pawel Oleszczuk, a Polish soldier.

The gala, Walke Mamy We Krwi 3 [We Have Fight In Our Blood 3], extended an invitation to compete to U.S. service members serving within Europe. Mackie will be the first ever foreign fighter to compete in the tournament.

“The entire civil affairs team is extremely proud of Johan’s willingness to not only represent our team, but to represent our nation and our branch of service as the first U.S. Army service member to participate in this event,” said Master Sgt. Jose Espinal, civil affairs noncommissioned officer in charge, 21st TSC. “His humility, mental

strength, and ‘go-getter’ personality are traits that make him a great Soldier, human being, and an asset to any organization.”

The tournament is the third edition of a project started and organized by the Polish Ministry of National Defense in order to promote and popularize all martial arts amongst their Soldiers and society.

“I’m really looking forward to the fight, the ministry of defense did a fantastic job with this event and I’m really honored to be here,” said Mackie. “Hopefully we can continue to come out to these events and continue to build that bond and camaraderie with the Polish military.”

The match consisted of three rounds, with each round lasting five minutes. For 15 grueling minutes, Mackie and Oleszczuk traded blows and battled within the octagon in a true test of physical and mental grit.

“I thought it was easy to recognize that we’re allies, Poland and U.S. Thank you very much for your presence. Thank you very much for the fight, and thank you for everything the U.S. Army is doing on Polish soil,” said Mariusz Blaszczak, Polish Minister of National Defense.

In the end, Oleszczuk was victorious as the referee raised his arm after the judges decision.

“I feel good about the fight. I kind of knew my stamina wasn’t there,” said Mackie. “But that just means I’ll be back for sure.”

Mackie says he plans to continue his training as soon as he returns to Germany to prepare himself for the next event.

Service Members get extended parental leave

The Defense Department issued a new policy to provide 12 weeks of paid, non-chargeable parental leave to service members who have a child through birth, adoption or a longterm foster care placement of at least 24 months.

These 12 weeks of parental leave, which became effective Dec. 27, come in addition to authorized convalescent leave for service members who give birth.

“This initiative supports the wellbeing and work-life balance of our military families,” according to a DOD press release on March 22.

Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman Ramón Colón-López said DOD is taking action based on feedback from service members.

“As we receive feedback from our force, we continue to take immediate actions to answer their needs as they stand poised to answer their nation’s call. This is one of many initiatives the department will continue to address, and it will not be the last. Our people deserve the best care to ensure they and their families are resilient in the conduct of our mission,” he said.

According to DOD guidance, activeduty service members and Reserve members on active duty for more than 12 consecutive months are covered by the new policy.

Convalescent leave may be authorized for recovery of the birth parent if such leave is specifically recommended, in writing, by the health care provider of the birth parent to address a diagnosed medical condition and is approved by the birth parent’s unit commander. The length of the con-

valescent leave is no longer prescribed in the parental leave policy and will be determined on an individual basis, according to the guidance.

Birth parents may take 12 weeks of parental leave after they complete the period of convalescent leave, the guidance states.

Parental leave — not convalescent leave — may be taken in multiple, nonconsecutive increments of at least one week, subject to command approval and mission requirements. Previously, parental leave was to be taken in a single, continuous increment.

Parental leave must be used within one year of a qualifying event or by the date of separation from active duty, whichever occurs first. The new policy creates occasions for exceptions to this limitation, such as when attending in-residence professional military education for a consecutive period of 90 or more days, performing temporary duty of 90 or more consecutive days, etc. Unused parental leave is forfeited after one year unless an exception is authorized or upon separation from active duty, according to the guidance.

Service members who were on maternity convalescent leave or caregiver leave prior to Dec. 27, 2022, and who had unused maternity convalescent leave or caregiver leave remaining, are transitioned to leave under the new policy without any loss of benefit and receive the expanded benefit, the guidance states.

Birth parents in a maternity convalescent leave status continue in that status, if applicable, until the birth parent completes the approved period of maternity convalescent leave, and then are eligible for 12 weeks of paren-

tal leave. Service members on primary or secondary caregiver leave will have that leave extended to provide them with a total of 12 weeks of parental leave, the guidance states.

The transition from maternity convalescent leave and/or caregiver leave to the expanded parental leave is intended to occur without interruption. The guidance provided some examples:

A birth parent who receives six weeks of “maternity convalescent leave” will also receive 12 weeks of non-chargeable parental leave following birth, for a total of 18 weeks of non-chargeable leave.

A father on three weeks of secondary caregiver leave as of Dec. 27, 2022, will receive a total of 12 weeks of parental leave.

As of Feb. 1, all military services have published, detailed guidance on the required forms, approval authorities and the process to request leave under the new program. Contact your military service’s human resources professionals for more information.

The following is an example of a soldier who plans to take parental leave.

On Aug. 3, Tara Redmond gave birth to George Henry Redmond in Prince Frederick, Maryland.

Husband and father Army Staff Sgt. Kent Redmond works in the Pentagon as a mass communications specialist. He said he was happy to hear about the policy change and has not yet used his parental leave.

The couple plans to use the parental leave well before Aug. 3, when it expires, he said, adding that the new policy provides flexibility for his family and for his work because it can be used in more than one segment of time.

Over the years, there were small, incremental changes to parental leave, he said. When their first child, Lucille Jane, 4, was born, only 10 days of parental leave were authorized. A year later when John Terry was born, 14 days of parental leave were authorized.

Redmond, who has 16 years of ser-

vice, said female soldiers he’s known often chose to leave the Army to be with their newborns. He said he thinks this new policy will aid in retention, as well as recruitment.

Taking care of people is always good for increasing readiness of the force, he added.

since the Middle Ages, reveals how this traditional trading town came to life. The town’s unique location on the shores of what the Germans call Bodensee (Lake Constance) and the River Rhine, along with its proximity to Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein, make Konstanz an ideal holiday destination and touring base for excursions in the surrounding region.

Bodensee (Lake Constance)

Bodensee (Lake Constance) is the largest lake in Germany with a surface area of 536 km² and a volume of 48,5 billion m³ of water. At its longest, the lake measures 63 km and at its broadest it measures 14 km between Langenargen (in Germany) and Rorschach (in Switzerland). It’s the third largest lake in Central Europe.

Konstanz has had settlers since the Stone Age and became established around 40 AD when the first Roman settlement on the area was recorded. It is home to the University of Konstanz, which for over 1,200 years used to be the Roman-Catholic residence for the Diocese of Konstanz.

The Rhine River as it begins its journey from the Swiss Alps runs across Lake Constance where the north part of the river houses the largest area of the city including the University of Konstanz, Industrial estates and residential areas. Towards the Rhine River’s southern side is the old town, lots of shopping facilities and administrative center including the University of Applied Sciences.

There are car ferries available on Lake Constance to connect you with Meersburg, or a Catamaran shuttle service for pedestrians to reach Friedrichshafen.

What to do in Konstanz

There are so many things to do in Konstanz that you might like to grab a guide book as your itinerary or even take a guided tour organised by the tourist office (available in English).

If you prefer independent travel then

you might start by visiting Insel Mainau (Island Mainua) by taking a boat where you can view the famous butterfly house, a huge selection of flowers, exhibition halls, souvenir shops, picnic facilities and some beautiful spots for lunch.

The lakefront promenade in Konstanz offers a superb platform for all kinds of outdoor activities. Pedestrians, roller skaters and cyclists all enjoy the perfectly paved promenade and adrenalin junkies looking for a bigger rush will find this is a hot spot for a variety of water sports.

Konstanz is a top lakeside destinations so taking a boat trip is a must once you are there. You can take a boat to such destinations as Bregenz, Lindau, Friedrichshafen, Rohrschacherberg and Mainau. There are boat excursions departing for Schaffhausen and Sten am Rhein for anyone interested in viewing the Rheinfall (Rhein Falls), the largest plain water waterfall in Europe.

The Petershausen Abbey, a Benedictine monastery was founded in 983 and is well worth a visit. As is the Rosgarten Museum. Once a butchers’ guildhall it now highlights regional art and history, with an emphasis on medieval panel painting and sculpture.

If impressive buildings are your thing, then you must see the restored proto-cathe-

dral, Konstanz Minster, which has stood in Konstanz for centuries and is a rather magnificent piece of architecture.

Other main sights in the city include the Konzil edifice that goes back to the 15th century; Niederburg or the Lower Castle, the remains of a Roman fortress; the Schnetztor, a fortified gate which was a part of the old city walls; the 9 meter-tall sculpture known as Imperia; an Archaeological Museum; and the Jan Hus Museum where the life of John Hus is documented. Hus was a Czech priest and philosopher who is considered the first Christian reformer (he lived before Luther and Calvin) and was crudely burned at the stake in 1415 for heresy because of his rebellious attitude towards the catholic church.

A cycling holiday

Without a doubt, one of the best ways to experience the whole of Bodensee is to cycle around the lake, taking in several stops along the way. The Bodensee-Radweg (Bodensee Cycle Route) begins in Konstanz and includes three countries and 273km along the way. The cycle path is usually flat, very well maintained and perfect for beginners and families. It’s of course possible to do smaller sections of the path if the full 273km seems a bit too much!

Nightlife in Konstanz

Konstanz is a laid back town that will suit anyone looking to party or just relax and soak up a great atmosphere. You can begin with the wonderful atmosphere of the Die Cocktailbar — don’t miss the daily happy hour between 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Klimper Kasten is another lounge/bar in the old town and a place that blends good music and retro decor with standard beer choices and cocktails. Also recommended is Heimat and Seerhein to discover something new each time.

Where to eat

There are many places to eat in Konstanz and there is no better place to begin your cuisine adventure than Hafenhalle – a wonderful beer garden and restaurant, where you can try the local dish known as Maultaschen (stuffed pasta). The beer garden is a chance to enjoy great German beers and German pub food such as schnitzel, half chickens, wurst and pommes.

There is also a lakeside cafe known as Hote Riva with a sunny terrace and known as one of the coolest places you can be seen in. To grab a lunch time light bite, try the Suppengrün for a fantastic selection of Soups. It has a very kid-friendly modern interior which is great for families.

Konstanz’s main square is the home of the Cafe Münsterhof, a very inviting cafe where you can also catch a glimpse of the Minster Church as you feast on apple strudel. You can also get some delicious Singaporean food at the Meera Restaurant. Or try Le Bento, which offers fresh and healthy food, such as salads, smoothies and fresh sandwiches.

Getting there

Driving to Konstanz from Kaiserslautern or Wiesbaden is a surprisingly short 3.5 hour drive. From Stuttgart it’s a mere 1.5 hours drive which even makes it suitable for a day trip. But the most relaxing way to arrive is to take the train and start your trip from the minute you leave home.
