Operation Copper Arrow: Refueling the mission forward Story and photos by Senior Airman John R. The aircrew, assigned to the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas Air National Guard, was the first in a rotation of ANG and Air Force Reserve Command tanker crews to participate in the operation to provide increased air refueling capacity to the European theater.

After completing mission briefs and pre-flight checks, the 190th ARW tanker crew departed Ramstein to carry out the refueling of a NATO E-3A Sentry aircraft operating out of NATO Air Base, Geilenkirchen, Germany.

COMMENTARY: The accountability factor Latasha M. Davidson 86th Airlift Wing Integrated Resilience Office Our society loves buzzwords.

Many people often gravitate to speaking the language of the latest trend or fad, while attempting to capitalize on those words in a variety of ways. As I sat with this thought, I began to focus on some of the words that circulate in my circles and conversations – resilience, strength, capacity, decisions, accountability. That was it – accountability. I could not move away from this word and therefore challenged myself to explore my thoughts more deeply. I, like many of you reading this article, have heard this word hundreds of times throughout my professional career, so much so, that it’s true meaning and intent has often gotten muddled in the mundane mélange of buzzwords.

Accountability – the fact or condition of being accountable.

Accountable – an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions.

As leaders, we find ourselves in a pivotal position of balance between our organization, the people that we serve within that organization, and the climate of the culture at large. I will briefly explore each of these as a foundation for my thoughts.

First, the organization. Whether in a corporate, nonprofit, or military environment, as leaders we have agreed to not only support the organization but to uphold the standards and regulations of the organization in a manner that we hope will lead to continued success, growth, and forward movement of the mission and goals.

Second, the people that we serve within the organization. As leaders, we not only uphold the tenets of the organization, but we guide, mentor, and support people within the context of the mission and vision. We lead by example. We set the standard and help others along the journey.

And finally, the climate of the culture at large. As a representative of the organization and leader of the people in the organization, there is a requisite to balance the needs of the organization and our

service to the people within the context of culture. It is important to weigh the tone of our leadership through the lens of societal issues that affect the organization as a whole, and more importantly, the people in that organization.

So, you may be asking, “What does this have to do with accountability?” I’m so glad you asked. I’ll share a brief story to further illustrate my thoughts.

I can remember being brandnew in the violence prevention program teaching bystander intervention training to a group of Airmen. After going through the curriculum that gave individuals practical applications for intervening and supporting others in community, one of the younger Airmen approached me with a question. He wanted to know why we (leaders, the organization) placed so much emphasis on individuals being bystanders, but we offered very little information on the outcome of those efforts. He said, “Ma’am, where are the statistics to show us the percentage of those who have been held accountable for their actions?” He was referencing those who committed

acts of interpersonal violence such as sexual assault, stalking, harassment, and domestic violence.

He, like many others, had heard that getting involved never made a difference because individuals were rarely held accountable for their actions. So, what was the point of getting involved?

At that time, I did not have what I believed to be an adequate answer for him and admittedly, I felt somewhat embarrassed. As a leader in an organization, I was encouraging him to intervene and be a good wingman, yet I was unable to satisfactorily explain the outcomes of said interventions and speak to his perceived injustices. I struggled with the accountability factor.

Since then, this point of accountability has continued as a theme in my thought processes.

Given the current world climate of the pandemic and racial tensions, a desire for the true relevance and application of this word has resounded even more heavily with me. As I consider the three areas at the beginning of this article – organizations, people, and cultural context – I am reminded of the need for accountability at all levels.

My thoughts: • As leaders, it is important to cultivate an environment of authenticity and trust, where individuals feel comfortable coming to us with the most minor of their concerns.

Trust is built when accountability of others is embodied and encouraged by leaders.

Trust and accountability go hand-in-hand when bringing about sustainable culture change. We must be accountable to the organization.

• As leaders, we must hold ourselves accountable for our actions and we must hold others accountable for their actions when it is within our sphere to do so. We must be accountable to the people.

• As leaders, we should lean into ways to understand the unique and diverse needs and concerns of the people we serve. We must be accountable within the context of the culture.

• And finally, for leaders, accountability cannot be just another buzzword.

Funded by USAFE – AFAFRICA’s Request for Forces and European Deterrence Initiative, the operation brings volunteer ANG and AFRC crews, tanker aircraft, maintainers and support personnel into the U.S. European Command theater.

“From a guard perspective, it’s an opportunity for crews to operate in the European theater for an extended period of time,” Dickey said. “The operating area here is pretty busy, so our younger crews can get some of that experience working in a new region, and it really broadens our horizons for future work in the European theater.”

The operation also includes a small staff of mission planners and a supply and logistics troops

They need the air refueling to either extend the mission or for pilot and crew proficiency. to allow independent operations.

“The airspace is very tight, and countries have their own set of rules for flying over,” said Lt. Col. William Silence, 130th Operations Support Squadron officer and 603rd Air Operations Center A34 Copper Arrow project officer. “That’s where the mission planning cell team does a good job of planning ahead and verifying that those routes are good and then requesting the diplomatic clearances in order to get overflight clearance from each country. As good partners, for operating in Europe, we want to make sure we get that permission before we fly over.”

Through Copper Arrow, Ramstein is slated to host tanker aircraft and units from across the spectrum this year, including KC-135s, KC-10 Extender aircraft and the first KC-46 Pegasus aircraft to operate in-theater.

“Because we’re standing up this mission here, it takes a lot of

support and a lot of assistance, and we just want to thank the 86th Airlift Wing for their support and help,” Dickey said. “We really appreciate their assistance in opening their doors and their home to us.”

“I appreciate all the crews; the 190th, the 101st (Air Refueling Wing, Maine ANG) that are coming out, and the guard and reserve crews that help get this mission going,” Silence said. “It’s a fun mission, but it’s still time away from their family, time away from home, and they are providing that increased capacity.”

Airmen fortify missile defense strategies during European Test Bed Story and photos by 1st Lt Hannah Durbin United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa The European Integrated Air and Missile Defense Center hosted a European Test Bed event at the Warrior Preparation Center, Einsiedlerhof Air Station, April 12-15.

ETB is an experimentation venue where the U.S. and NATO can explore, evaluate and align concepts and defensive strategies to defend Europe from air and missile attacks.

“This is one of the few events where we can come together and experiment in the European ballistic defense mission,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Marco Catanese, European Integrated Air and Missile Defense center assistant director of operations and ETB lead. “It’s an irreplaceable venue for practicing new air and missile defense concepts and procedures alongside our allies and joint partners.”

Lt. Gen. Steven Bashan, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa deputy commander, participated in the ETB as the regional air defense commander, serving as the decision authority during missile defense scenarios.

“We all appreciate this opportunity to come together and receive valuable hands-on experience in this critical mission-set,” said Basham. “These training events are fundamental to evolving our ballistic missile defense strategies and ensuring all participants remain synced and ready for all defense scenarios.”

Occurring since 2016, ETB is typically a week-long event evaluating multiple missile defense concepts in a simulated environment with U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Space Force and Missile Defense Agency systems under U.S. and NATO command and control. The next ETB is

“ETBs allow us to identify gaps in procedure that we need to work on,” said U.S. Space Force Sgt. Adam Iovine, an integrated air and missile defense technician and exercise participant. "It's been extremely valuable to see how our allies are viewing the calls that we make and how they interpret the information we put out. Every country and service does this mission a little different, so it’s important that we all get in the same room to have these conversations and practice."

Bui. “When they came here, they didn’t have a person who was able to make necessary purchases. I’ve been buying all the required items they need to fly and operate while they are deployed here.”

Bui provided oversight and coordination for both the 700th Contracting Squadron and the 86th Communication Squadron for delivery, implementation, and imaging of a $287K contract for 80 new laptops. This action helped him provide the squadron with a 100% teleworking capability rate.

While Bui was accomplishing tasks for each of the units, he had the support and help of his office.

“It’s not just me,” said Bui. “We’re an office that can do everything together.”

“I work a lot with the group RA to understand how things work, and are processed, because I don’t understand the terms and the lingo, so I just make sure I have the resources to

understand,” he added.

Bui was chosen as Airlifter of the Week because his leadership can trust him to do the job.

“He is a very driven guy,” said Lt. Col. Ryan McAdams, 76th AS chief resource advisor, “I don’t have to micromanage him. He understands what needs to be done, he does the research and he contacts the appropriate people. When the 310 EACCS came in he jumped in to help on top of all the things he does for the 76th AS.” Bui also runs the squadron defense travel system program, leading a nine-member approving official team, which approved 830 travel vouchers last year.

In the future, Bui hopes to continue performing his job and raising his kids to be great people.

“Bui is just very smart and he is constantly going the extra mile,” said McAdams. “He’s an incredible leader who takes care of his people.”

Ramstein sows seeds Story and photos by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Civil Engineer Squadron’s installation environment management department provided approximately 500 oak trees to 60 service members and their families for an Earth Day tree planting event at Ramstein Air Base, April 20.

In the U.S., the 2021 Earth Day theme is “Restore Our Earth.”

Bringing attention to natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. The newly planted oak tree seeds will take a few years to grow into a sapling tree, but will eventually produce its own acorns and could live for hundreds of years.

“It is up to each and every one of us to restore our earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it,” said Anna Lessire, 86th CES installation management environmental chief. “We all need a healthy earth to support our jobs, livelihoods, health, survival, and happiness. A healthy planet is not an option, it is a necessity.”

Several children were among those who helped to plant seeds along the forest line.

“I brought my daughter here today to teach her the importance of taking care of our earth, for her and her sisters' future and their children’s future,” said Kate Reier, U.S. Air Force spouse.

Participants on base are part of a larger like-minded community.

More than a billion people in 192 countries now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

“Rising temperatures caused by climate change are threatening our installation forest areas,” said Lessire. “Severe droughts and many dry summers in the past years have left trees vulnerable to bark beetles and other illnesses. Ramstein Air Base is very busy and has new construction, so we would like to give back to Mother Earth and plant new trees.”

Air Force rewrites basic doctrine, focuses on mission command, airpower evolution

by Air University Public Affairs Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. recently signed perhaps the most sweeping change of Air Force basic doctrine in the service’s history, marking a major milestone in the service’s strategic approach to “Accelerate Change or Lose.”

Core themes to the revised Air Force Doctrine Publication-1: The Air Force are the foundation and evolution of airpower and the concept of mission command.

“When it comes to airpower, it’s about the fact that we can fly, fight and win anytime and anywhere.

That is tried and true – how we exploit the air domain, operating in and through the air domain,” Brown said. “That’s what we’ve done since we became an Air Force, and that’s what we’ll continue to do. How we do that might change based on what we see happening in the world and where technology might take us.”

With the Air Force recently releasing its new mission statement – To fly, fight and win …

Airpower anytime, anywhere – the general said that “leaders need to ensure that all Airmen – active duty, Guard, Reserve or civilian – understand how much they contribute to airpower.”

The document defines the concept of mission command as a return to the philosophy of mission accomplishment guided by the commander’s intent, while operating in environments characterized by “increasing uncertainty, complexity and rapid change.”

“To drive commander’s intent, we have to be very broad in our thinking,” he said.

“We have to give Airmen the leeway, without being very prescriptive, to lead and execute while still

meeting intent. When Airmen are empowered, they’ll be able to make things happen that we didn’t even think about.”

In the document’s “CSAF Perspective on Doctrine,” Brown

reminds Airmen: “Leaders must push decisions to the lowest competent, capable level using doctrine as a foundation for sound choices.” This core idea resonates

throughout the rewrite.

AFDP-1 also updates the legacy airpower tenet of “centralized control, decentralized execution” to “centralized command, distributed control and decentralized execution.” This evolution allows for a framework from which to develop new operating concepts, strategies and capabilities to address rapidly changing and increasingly challenging operating environments.

Brown’s new focus on mission command and centralized command, distributed control and decentralized execution postures the Air Force to execute what he lays out in his “Accelerate Change or Lose” vision: “We must focus on the Joint Warfighting Concept, enabled by Joint AllDomain Command and Control and rapidly move forward…”

While AFDP-1 marks a significant departure from the generally slow pace of change in doctrine, it represents the significant change in focus by the Air Force from retrospective and incremental to future-focused and poised to seize opportunity.

Doctrine represents the best practices and principles that articulate how the Air Force fights. The recent rewrite of AFDP-1 represents a consolidation from 141 pages to 16 pages and a refinement of “the most fundamental and enduring beliefs describing airpower and the Airman’s perspective.”

With the March 2021 release of the “Interim National Security Strategic Guidance,” President Joe Biden reminded the nation “the distribution of power across the world is changing, creating new threats.”

AFDP-1 is poised to reorient the Air Force for the era of great power competition and accelerated change.

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Emma James 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Using the 86th Airlift Wing’s line of effort of Develop Airmen and Care for Families as a guideline, 86th Maintenance Group leadership created a new mentorship program.

The objective of the new program, MxMADE, is to provide a foundation for maintenance members to leverage their intellect and thirst for improvement to develop Airmen who can improve mission capability and success.

“MxMADE stands for Mentor, Adapt, Deliver, and Empower and is aimed at improving not just the members themselves, but those around them,” explained Col. Anthony Nance, 86th MXG commander.

Leadership developed the program after taking feedback from officers, enlisted and civilian personnel from various ranks and career fields in the group’s organization about what they identified as needs and priorities surrounding mission and training.

“It was conceived with input from our entire organization. It wasn’t just leaders coming together in a bubble and concocting this,” said Senior Master Sgt. Alan Malcolm, 86th MXG superintendent.

“We’re accountable to the Airmen

and we owe it to them to develop them.”

Airmen also share their successes of the program, delivered through multiple avenues including shadow programs and academics, and how the strategy keeps maintainers focused on what is important during weekly staff meetings and impromptu interactions during day-to-day operations.

“Empowerment is an element that gives us motivation and drive,” said Senior Airman Angelo-Miguel Lopez, 86th Maintenance Squadron precision measurement equipment laboratory technician. “It provides a sense of ownership and investment in our work because without it, we would treat our mission like a regular nine to five job.”

Dialogues often spark innovation and modernization discussions on how to complete the mission more efficiently.

One innovative idea involved equipment calibrations and COVID19 travel restrictions.

“Normally, we would send people to various locations in Europe to calibrate equipment too large to be shipped, such as aircraft scales and fabrication ovens,” said Lopez. “Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, we weren’t able to do those calibrations as normal; but our customers still need their items calibrated to accomplish their mission.”

Lopez explained that with leadership empowering them to put their heads together, the Ramstein PMEL laboratory has become the first to do “virtual calibrations,” ensuring missions continue all over Europe.

“To transition a good team to a great team, you have to have buy-in from the team,” said Nance. “Every member has to know they are a valued member of the team; their input matters and they are empowered to not just make those around them better but the entire organization better. From the smallest idea to the largest that we can put into action that helps the organization.”

Bringing your dog to a beer garden on a nice sunny day is one of those great privileges (it really helps if “Fido” is trained). With great privilege comes great responsibility. Germany has clear rules within the German Animal Welfare Act regarding your dog with regard to quality of life, leaving them at home alone and many other topics.

Here is a quick reference list of some hot topics to refer to: •

A dog should not stay alone without being walked for more than five hours (recommended dog walking time is at least one hour per day).

You are not allowed to chain up the dog within the apartment or keep it locked in a separate room.

Owners should not keep their dogs on balconies, in basement rooms and bathrooms when the owner leaves the house.

Dog owners must pick up excrement left from their dog during walks.

Dog owners must keep their dogs on a leash while walking them on public streets in housing areas. Violators may be punished with fines up to 5,000 euro.

Dog owners need to make sure that their pets don’t bark and whine during quiet hours: 1 to 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Outside these hours, dog owners must ensure that dog noises do not last longer than 10 consecutive minutes (or more than 30 minutes cumulatively per day).

The equipment, known as Sports Art, is capable of harnessing human power and converting it to utility grade electricity.

The two-year acquisition process was a team effort between the 786th FSS and USAFE-AFAFRICA’s Innovation and Technology office.

“These machines do not need any infrastructure to add power,” said Marcus Grothues, 786th FSS fitness and sports manager. “As you work out you create power and it goes right back into the system to power other things in the building. We’re not just going green, we’re making green if you look at it that way.”

The Northside Fitness Center has four of the G690 Verde treadmills that utilize ECO-POWR technology.

ECO-POWR is an innovative technology that harnesses up to 74% of human energy and converts it to utility grade electricity according to the Sports Art website.

In addition to the four treadmills, the Northside Fitness Center also has four bikes and cross-trainers. The Southside and Vogelweh Fitness Centers have one of each type of machine.

Strict limitations on medications imported into Germany

by Fred Evans U.S. Army Customs Agency – Europe Transporting certain types of prescription or over-the-counter medications in your luggage or hand carried bags when traveling through a German Airport or Border Control Point can pose a problem, especially if the medication is not properly prescribed, labeled, and documented in accordance with German law.

“Whenever German Customs finds prescription medications during entry examinations, they will ask the traveler to provide a written medical prescription,” said Fred Evans, U.S. Army Customs Agency - Europe deputy director. Without this or other proof that you are legitimately prescribed these medications, you could receive a hefty fine and become the subject of a police report. Perhaps worse, you could be denied entry into Germany.”

This is because the German Medicines Law poses many restrictions on medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, that can be personally carried and imported into Germany.

A great number of medications prescribed by U.S. medical authorities or purchased in U.S. based retail stores are considered controlled substances

by German Customs officials.

“Typically, German pharmacies give patients their medications in the original packaging, as received from the pharmaceutical company. The pharmacy then returns the written prescription to the patient as proof. In the U.S., patients give their prescription to the pharmacy. In turn, the pharmacy places all pertinent information on the bottle (name, date, medication, doctor, issuing facility) and issues the medication in a bottle or other type of marked container,” Evans stated.

Evans explained that there are several simple ways to avoid unnecessary complications when entering Germany with personal medications.

“First, always keep prescription medications in the original container that you received from the pharmacy or store. Transporting several different medications in one bottle for convenience or transferring them into other unofficial medical containers will likely be problematic. Second, keep a copy of the original prescription you received from the doctor and have it readily available for inspection for German Customs officials. Third, and equally important, have an official medication list issued by your medical provider that specifically lists all the medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, that you or your family members are taking. Further keep in mind – travelers are limited on medicines to quantities that meet usual personal needs when entering Germany. In general, this equals a maximum of three month’s supply of the recommended dose of each medicine.”

German law also strictly prohibits medications, vitamins and healthcare supplements from being imported into the country by mail.

These banned articles include things you order online or by mail order, or that relatives and friends mail to you. “Even items like protein powder, vitamins, supplements, or ginseng in highly measured doses are restricted,” according to Evans.

The local customs office can provide more advice on these questions.

European Best Defender Competition tests “total Soldier concept” for 10 AAMDC

by Spc. Kristen Burroughs 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command Soldiers from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command competed in a strenuous battle to test their physical and mental capabilities during the 2021 European Best Defender Competition, April 11-16.

The European Best Defender Competition is a command competition consisting of several events held over a five-day period, including reacting to a Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear (CBRNE) attack, rugged terrain course, land navigation course, Army Combat Fitness Test, grenade range, written test and essay, 16-lane obstacle course, stress shoot, weapons assembly, 12-mile foot march, and a formal board.

On day one, the Soldiers conducted a land navigation course, where they traveled by foot through wooded areas to successfully identify different points on the map during both day and night iterations.

“I’m jumping in head first and learning as I go,” said Pfc. Fabian Moya, 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment (5-7 ADA). “I’m a little nervous but I hope to gain experience and knowledge to advance my Army career.”

Following land navigation, Soldiers faced an uphill battle with the rugged terrain course. The rugged terrain course is made up of a 1.5 kilometer loop with six distinct obstacles to test individual Soldier movement. Each obstacle is hidden deep in the woods with only one way in and one way out.

Immediately after the timer started, Soldiers climbed a muddy steep hill to find the first obstacle. Spc. Ronnie Jarmon was one of many competitors who considered the course to be grueling. “I got lost,” he said. “When I got to the top of the first hill, it felt like my legs were on fire.”

Soldiers took a guided path between two poles to help them navigate through the remainder of the course, jumping over towers, climbing on ropes, crawling through obstacles, and balancing themselves on beams to cross the finish line.

Later that day, Soldiers tested their resilience and ability to react and survive in numerous combat situations during the situational training exercise (STX) lanes.

“I don’t get the chance to train like this often. It’s been a lot of fun getting back into the field,” said 1st Lt. Brandon Rhea, 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment (5-4 ADA). “The fatigue is really starting to set in.”

Day two kicked off with an early morning Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), grenade lanes, and a written

test and essay to reflect on Soldiers’ abilities to effectively communicate as a leader. According to Master Sgt. Kevin Cadungug, an advisor for the competition, this combination of mental and physical abilities helps create the total Soldier concept.

“Sometimes they just need an extra push to get them through,” said Sgt. Cadungug, “and this competition will give them just that. Soldiers are stronger than they think.”

“The physically challenging times were the most rewarding to finish,” said Sgt. Charles Bell, Headquarters Battery,10th AAMDC. “This competition is very eye opening.”

The written test and essay consisted of 50 multiple-choice questions focusing on general Army knowledge. The essay required a minimum of 250 words on how to create a culture to prevent the Army’s three corrosives: suicide, racism and extremism, and sexual harassment and assault.

“For some Soldiers, the mental aspect of the competition may be tougher than the physical aspect,” said Master Sgt. Ronelle Wallace, an advisor from Headquarters Battery, 10th AAMDC. “Mental agility plays a large part in the competition.”

Soldiers remained fueled by perseverance and determination as they moved through each remaining section.

“I told myself not to give up and to keep pushing through,” said Sgt. Antonio Irvin, 5-4 ADA. “It was more mentally challenging than physical for me.”

As the week continued, Soldiers

maneuvered their way through the 16-station obstacle course, stress shoot, and weapons assembly to test their strength and agility.

Soldiers faced a series of challenges during the obstacle course. Some found themselves at a disadvantage on certain obstacles, but showed that tactical thinking was a key to success.

“My height made several sections difficult for me,” said Pvt. Joshua Kinder, 5-4 ADA. “The high step obstacle was well over my belly button and I couldn't use my hands and I fell quite a few times...before each obstacle, I tried to analyze it quickly and think about the easiest and fastest way to go about it.”

The stress shoot consisted of a 3-mile run in full gear holding their M4 rifles. Directly after the 3-mile run, Soldiers were instructed to low-crawl 25 meters, pull a 90-pound sled, and immediately engage targets in various shooting positions.

“We are constantly put in stressful environments and we have to be able to do everything we can to survive,” said Pvt. Kinder. “I’ve been told to train like I would fight.”

Day four began before sunrise with a 12-mile foot march — each Soldier carrying a rucksack weighing a minimum of 35 pounds.

Later that morning, each participant reported to the formal board where senior leaders from each unit asked questions about general military knowledge, tested the competitors’ ability to execute basic commands, and graded their overall military appearance.

“I wasn’t nervous leading up to the board until I stepped foot into the building,” said Pvt. Kinder. “My nerves hit me like a wave.”

The week concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing the winners from each category — officers, non-commissioned officers, and junior enlisted Soldiers — of the European Best Defender Competition.

“Every event is weighed equally when determining the overall winners,” said Master Sgt. David Callagy,

NCOIC for the European Best Defender Competition. “Each event over the course of the week is based out of 100 points.”

Of the nine Soldiers who competed, representing each subordinate unit under the 10th AAMDC command structure, three Soldiers exceeded expectations, overcame obstacles, and claimed the title of 2021 European Best Defender.

“You don't have to be the fastest, the strongest or the smartest,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Giancarlo Macri, the 10th AAMDC senior enlisted advisor. “It takes heart and mental toughness to become a 360-degree Soldier.”

Each winner for their command was presented with an Army Achievement Medal and sword by the Commanding General and Command Sergeant Major.

“This competition is about the warriors who stepped up to compete,” said Brig. Gen. Gregory Brady, commanding general of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command. “These Soldiers demonstrated a winning attitude by setting goals and achieving them.”

1st Lt. Brandon Rhea, Sgt. Antonio Irvin, and Pvt. Joshua Kinder received the title of “Best Defender” in their respective categories. All winning competitors are from the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment.

“It’s a great honor to represent my Battalion and make my Battery proud,” said 1st Lt. Rhea. “I left it all on the field.”

The best defender from each category will advance to compete in the best warrior competition hosted by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, later this year.

Second generation Korean American reflects on Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Story and photo by Russell Toof Regional Health Command Europe May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a national observance that honors the perseverance and legacy of Asian and Pacific Americans and celebrates their contributions to the nation.

For Col. Abraham Suhr, a second generation Korean American, a block of American cheese generates memories of a connection between his family and the U.S. Army.

“My father and my father-in-law were both 10 years old during the Korean War,” said Suhr. “My father’s father was captured and never seen or heard from again. My father’s six other brothers and sisters survived by their mother’s devoted tenacity and with the help of the American GIs. My father has a deep appreciation for the sacrifice it took for each American Soldier to leave their family to come to Korea to defend people they didn’t even know.”

“My father-in-law always likes to have American cheese in his refrigerator,” added Suhr. “When I asked him one day why, he said as a young boy that he and his family did not have basic necessities such as food. He remembers an American military member giving him something. Opening up the mystery, it was a block of American cheese. He still remembers the creaminess. I am reminded of the long-lasting power of a simple act of service.”

Col. Abraham Suhr, an ophthalmologist and Deputy Commander for Surgical Services at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, is a second generation Korean American. May is recognized as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month stands as a reminder of the strength the Army has gained and will gain, through a high-quality diverse all-volunteer force.

Both Suhr’s father and fatherin-law immigrated to the United States when they were young adults.

“They came to study, make a life for themselves, build a future and a family,” added Suhr.

Suhr grew up in San Luis Obispo, California, and commissioned into the Army in 1997. He received a letter of acceptance to attend medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

In order to attend, he needed to join the military.

“Joining the Army or even the military was not on my radar during all my planning and preparation for medical school,” he said.

“However, when I interviewed at the Uniformed Services University, I fell in love with the community and all the opportunities within the military and military medicine. Current medical students were enthusiastic about attending USU and would not stop talking about all the unique opportunities and tremendous support given to

medical students.”

Suhr said that at the time, he wasn’t entirely sure what kind of doctor he wanted to be, but he eventually chose ophthalmology.

“Eyesight is extremely valuable to people,” said Suhr. “We make a quick and noticeable improvement in someone’s life with the right diagnosis and management.

It’s rewarding professionally and personally.”

Suhr currently serves as the Deputy Commander for Surgical Services at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

That position supports LRMC’s mission to enable readiness of the Joint Domain Warfighter as they receive care through LRMC’s surgical clinics and operating rooms.

“Joining the military has provided me an opportunity to be exposed to many people with diverse backgrounds and experiences,” said Suhr. “It has given me the opportunity to travel and see various parts of the United States and the world. While in the military, I accomplished my professional goals and have taken care of the most appreciative patients in the world. I value all my opportunities and experiences of being part of the military.”

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month stands as a reminder of the strength the Army has gained and will gain, through a high-quality diverse all-volunteer force.

“I have gained multicultural experiences through various military assignments and being a physician to a large number of people from different ethnicities,” said Suhr. “I’ve learned lessons which boils down to the importance of having respect for others, regardless of the ethnicities or other perceived differences.”

Suhr often reflects on his father and father-in-law’s experience with the military and how it has shaped his Army career.

“What we do, or do not do, can have a tremendous and long-lasting impact on individuals and even generations,” said Suhr. “Think about the GI giving the block of cheese. We may be oblivious to the significance of what we did and unaware of the extent of the impact. However, maybe it is good enough to know of the potential so that it motivates us to always serve well.”

With more than two decades of service, Suhr can now reflect on his time in the Army and offer advice to young Soldiers just starting their career.

“Seek to build relationships with all sorts of people, especially with those you would not normally befriend,” said Suhr. “Remain humble and ask yourself what you can learn from someone else, regardless of the person’s rank or other traits. The military definitely gives people opportunities; it is up to you to take them.”

Summer Surge: Getting meds, supplements through mail illegal Story and photos by Keith Pannell USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Permanent Change of Station season is upon us and United States Army Europe-Africa customs inspectors remind personnel of the differences in what they can, and cannot, receive in their military postal box while overseas.

According to a U.S. Customs pamphlet, German customs law prohibits the receipt and shipment of certain items through the mail.

Those items include prescription medications and over-the-counter nutritional medications and supplements. Those products could be destroyed or returned to the sender.

“People have to realize that it’s illegal to have medications sent through their APO, or military post offices,” said Brian Harris, Chief Customs Inspector for USAEUR-A. “Many people are used to getting their meds through the mail in the States and they don’t realize they can’t do that here.”

Harris said the customs officers occasionally get some pushback from postal customers and he explains that, as part of the Status of Forces Agreement which all service members, DOD civilians, contractors and their families fall under the German customs

regulations must be followed.

“We do spot checks and when we find illegal items, we have to educate them before we take stuff away from them,” Harris said.

“That’s the best thing to do. We educate them so we don’t have to take it and they incur a financial loss. We try not to fine people the first time, but after that it can be a hefty fine.”

Other items customs officers come across which violate the host nation customs laws include: firearms — which Harris says must be confiscated and destroyed; some goods or counterfeit goods used in home businesses — name brand knock-offs are a no-no; many foods of animal or plant origin – meat, eggs, potatoes, mushrooms, wine are illegal to send; coffee, alcohol, tobacco and pornography also violate the German customs laws.

“Right now, during the PCS season, we’re emphasizing the prescription medicines and supplements,” Harris said. “The best thing to do is get your meds through your military treatment facility or, if you’re a civilian, through your local doctor.”

Monasteries at Meteora Monks have been building monasteries in Greek wilderness for almost as long as there have been monks. Few have done it with more panache — and strategic acumen — than the hermit monks who created the monasteries at Meteora, located in northwestern Greece. Starting in the 14th century, more than 20 monasteries were built on the tops of sheer vertical columns of rock stretching more than 1,000 feet upward. For centuries afterward, the only way to reach these monasteries was through a system of rope sortof elevators. Which made visiting difficult and invading almost impossible. The six monasteries that remain are lovely, and are well worth the virtual tour.

Crete Crete is an epic place. It is Greece’s largest island, and features a stunning array of mountains and coasts. It’s also packed with history. The first advanced Greek civilization developed on Crete almost 5,000 years ago, and humans have lived there for far longer. It’s also a cultural crossroads.

Due to its strategic location in the southern Mediterranean, it’s been claimed by a who’s-who of ancient (and modern) civilizations, including Greece, Rome, Venice, the Ottoman Empire, and then Greece again.
