The visit focused on increasing partner capabilities by expanding the Ukrainian military’s capacity for fundamental air traffic control and combat communications concepts after acquiring two navigational aids for one of their airfields.

“We are excited to show the Ukrainian team around and familiarize them with our air traffic control and expeditionary communications capabilities,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Roper, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron commander. “This is a good start to see how our two countries can cooperate and interoperate in the future.”

Daniel Loveless 86th Healthcare Operations Squadron commander My alarm went off around 3:45 a.m. My gear was ready, and I quickly put on my base layers and hut sandals. I carried my bag and gear and left them outside the dining room. It was breakfast time. To me, eating is absolutely essential to climbing and I overeat when I climb as you will almost assuredly burn more calories in a summit climb than you can eat in that day.

The food was quite good for being in a hut at 10,695 feet, minus the coffee. It was instant, but regardless of taste, necessary.

Twenty two-man teams of climbers lined up by the door of the Hörnli Hut, which leads to the path up the Matterhorn. We put on the rest of our layers and gear necessary for the climb. As we exited the hut, everyone turned on their headlamps and started to walk to the first obstacle, a fixed rope that runs up a 20-foot section of sheer rock.

Traditionally, the Matterhorn takes eight to 12 hours to summit.

Many climbers will turn around if they haven’t reached the Salvay Hut at 13,123 feet within three hours.

Given the fast pace of the climb and the need to have equipment for rock climbing and walking on ice, the Matterhorn requires you to do more with less.

To do this I employed a number of strategies. These same strategies can help you when you are tasked with many items already on your plate.

The first step is to define your timeframe. How long do you realistically need to accomplish your tasks? For the Matterhorn, my guide set a goal of eight hours. If I did not think this was possible, it might be smart to rethink the climb. The same holds true for your work. Setting the time helps to keep you on track and is also important for changing your course if you fall behind schedule. In the case of mountaineering, that means turning around.

The next step is to harness your experience. This is something you need to do before taking on a complex challenge. Throughout your career, aim to take on new and difficult additional duties or assignments. These will build and prepare you for future challenges. The amazing part about building experience is that there is a bit of a gestalt benefit from this, in that the whole can be greater than the sum of the parts. This even applies to more than just groups of individuals. This principle can definitely apply to just an individual as well. For me this is probably the most important factor for climbing safely. Experience is key as human error plays a role in mountaineering fatalities more often than not. In preparation for this climb, I had climbed numerous mountains with more complex ice and rock climbing conditions. In addition, I had scaled a lower alti-

tude mountain with mixed rock and ice climbing in preparation. This gave me the experiences I needed to maximize safety and reduce my risk.

The only thing I could not prepare for was the overall duration of the rapid pace that is required to summit the Matterhorn.

When you have a lot on your plate, you have to make decisions about what you can and can’t do.

You only have so much time in a day, so you need to be able to ask yourself, is this really necessary?

Can I do the duty or complete this mission safely and effectively if I don’t do this? All of this amounts to process improvement. By critical analysis, we can at times not only make things faster, we can potentially even make the endeavor safer, as unneeded steps increase complexity and therefore increase risk. For this climb, it came down to reducing redundant equipment. Generally

you will bring along a large parka and a sleeping bag in case of having to bivouac in extreme weather.

Because the Salvay hut is equipped with beds and blankets and provides overall protection from the elements, you can safely leave a number of additional clothing layers and a sleeping bag behind. Luxury items, like a camera, come down to your fitness level and overall risk assessment. My overall pack weight was low and I was feeling good, so I did bring along my camera.

The final factor is to know when it is not safe to continue. There is always a limit to how much we can take on or are properly prepared to do. It is not only important to do a full assessment of the task at hand, but also to have the courage to say that you can’t do something safely or to stop when it becomes unsafe to continue. With some tasks, you may need to chart a new course.

Others may need additional support. Some will require you to try again from scratch. Getting to the top of a mountain is just 50 percent of the climb. With most accidents happening on the way down, it is essential to be ready to turn around if the weather conditions or climbing conditions impart unsatisfactory risk with continuing or your overall energy is not at a level that can support safe climbing both to the summit and down.

We arrived at the 14,692 foot summit of the Matterhorn in the early hours of the morning with great weather and a clear view of the Alps. I kept my focus on the task at hand until we arrived back at the Hörnli Hut after eight hours and 20 minutes of climbing. Although the Matterhorn was a difficult climb, I was able to celebrate in style by ordering a cold beer and a large and satisfying rösti.

The Office of Defense Cooperation, along with U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa A5I (international affairs), generated a concept of funding request for the familiarization tour, which was based on the Ukrainian armed forces’ objectives and desired outcomes for their newly acquired equipment.

“Air advisors take that CFR and start mission planning as soon as possible with the ODC and partner nations,” said Master Sgt. Michael Jaeger, 435th CRSS air traffic control air advisor. “We reach out to other squadrons around the globe to source the top subject matter experts that would best benefit the requesting country’s desires.”

Airmen from the 435th Air and Space Communications Group and 86th Operations Group discussed tactics, techniques and procedures, while showcasing tactical communications and air traffic control equipment. This assisted with familiarizing Ukrainian service members on NATO and U.S. Air Force standards.

“Air advisors build partnerships through familiarization opportunities like this one,” Jaeger said.

Ukrainian service members learned the capabilities combat communications provides and what it takes to get a tactical communications unit deployed. This asset can be essential for maintaining command and control during contingency operations.

“The fly-away communication kits the 1st Combat Communications Squadron displayed allow just that, and it gave the Ukrainian air force members a good benchmark for developing a mobile communications capability,” said Tech. Sgt. Kyle Koutsouros, 435th CRSS air advisor.

The Ukrainian team spent time with the 1st CBCS and 86th Operations Support Squadron Air Traffic Control Tower and Ground Controlled Approach components, as well as visited the 1st Communications Maintenance

Squadron at Kapaun Air Station.

The 1st CMXS performs advanced troubleshooting when called upon for communication outages and helps with projects which require new installations.

“Ukrainian air force members displayed interest in producing and initiating their own communication maintenance unit to help facilitate their armed forces at their main bases and during field operations,” Koutsouros said.

The 435th CRSS air advisors expand interoperability and deterrence initiatives through coordinating and hosting partner-nation visits. Members of the Ukrainian armed forces reviewed flexible, mobile and resilient communications capabilities and strategic airspace navigation and management – fundamental concepts which can enable them to host a variety of U.S. Air Force and NATO aircraft.

“We built a friendship first and foremost, exchanging stories and career experiences,” Jaeger said. “I have hopes we can assist Ukraine in getting their airfields to NATO standards.”

In the summer, set the fans to rotate counter-clockwise. This method of blade rotation will pull the warm air to the ceiling instead of in your direction.

New Force Generation model builds high-end readiness, sustainability for Joint Force

by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs The Air Force announced today it is in the final phases of transitioning to a new force generation model to balance today’s combatant commander needs while building high-end readiness for the future.

Replacing the current Air Expeditionary Force construct with a 24-month cycle composed of four, six-month readiness phases, the Air Force Force Generation, or AFFORGEN, model ensures a sustainable force offering of Airmen and airpower to the Joint Force.

AFFORGEN is projected to reach initial operating capability in fiscal year 2023.

“Under the current AEF construct, we’ve lacked the ability to present an easily understood model that reflected all facets of airpower and the ability to clearly articulate readiness impacts,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. “After nearly two decades of demanding rotational deployments, we are shifting to a model that builds high-end and sustainable readiness toward future missions by balancing elements of current availability, modernization and risk.”

The four phases of the AFFORGEN model will occur over a 24-month period and in alignment with the Joint Staff’s three phase model. Each phase is distinctive in nature: • Available to commit – Similar to today’s normal deployment phase. Airmen have achieved peak readiness and are either deployed or ready to deploy.

Some examples include Immediate Response or 9-1-1 forces.

• Reset – In this phase, the unit

The Air Force has announced its plans to replace the Air Expeditionary Force deployment model with the Air Force Generation model. Airmen reintegrate with families, take post deployment leave, reestablish currencies and get back to basic proficiency.

• Prepare – Building toward peak unit readiness while shielded from deployment. Airmen complete advanced upgrade training and multi-mission unit package training.

• Ready – Working to achieve a high-level of readiness above the unit level for the high-end fight environment. Units come together from multiple wings to train and complete certifying events such as flag exercise, Neptune Events, Weapon School Integration and other Large Force Exercises.

“Our 2018 Readiness deep dive found that the use of airpower outpaced force generation for the past 18 years,” said Lt. Gen. Joseph Guastella, deputy chief of Staff for Operations.

“This new model will make it easier for us to articulate available forces to the combatant commanders.”

The new construct balances trade-offs between short and long-term elements of structural readiness for the Air Force such as modernization, stabilizing manning, resourcing units to sustain higher-levels of readiness and better informing corporate resourcing, and budgeting decisions.

“We will be better positioned to identify unintended impacts if our capabilities are being retasked for a different mission,”

Guastella said. “Just because they are available, doesn’t necessarily mean they are ready.”

Major Commands including Air Combat Command, Air Force Special Operations Command, Air Mobility Command and Air Force Global Strike Command are transitioning squadrons to this mode, enabling support to combatant commands while focusing on Brown’s “Accelerate Change or Lose” priorities.

LEAP Spotlight: 1st Lt. James Kiesewetter Story and photo by 1st Lt. James Kiesewetter German LEAP Scholar “A question I’ve often thought about — what does being a part of another culture look and feel like?

For me, learning German started when the U.S. Air Force Academy chose what language I would take for one year: German. I fell in love with learning a language, and here I am more than five years later. I have spent about half of my adult life in Germany, studied in Germany, and have wonderful German friends who will be in my life forever.

German has also facilitated my search for answers to existential questions; it has opened my eyes to the world and humanity. I abruptly lost a close friend in 2015, and it started my search for answers.

Death seemed so far away before we lost him, but it slapped me in the face. Honestly, I was scared.

This hollow grief left me with many questions. How could I live every day as if tomorrow were my last? How do I figure out what to live for, what really matters? If it all ends abruptly, am I the person I have always wanted to be?

Instead of being stressed, trying to squeeze everything out of my last moments, how could I be at peace knowing I have lived a fulfilling life? How could I make the journey fulfilling instead of working my whole life to be fulfilled? I did not want to realize in the end that with the only chance I had, I did not live a fulfilling life, and it is too late to change. I did not want to continue looking over my shoulder, searching for the grim reaper, scared of when we would meet.

At the time of my friend’s passing, I was in my second semester of German class, and it became a way for me to search for these answers. German facilitated a new perspective for me about human nature and the world. I then made it my goal to find programs where I could travel to Germany. I did not know what I was going to find

in Germany. Still, I knew being immersed in another culture, and speaking another language would help me better understand life, push me mentally, and I might be able to learn more about why we are all here.

Along the journey, I reflected for countless hours, searching the world and my head for answers.

After all this time of searching, I finally feel free. I am no longer scared, and I live a truly wonderful and fulfilling existence. Once I figured out what the questions and answers were and how to live for those answers, I had to figure out WHY they worked. I eventually had

the breakthrough of my life, and I could not be more excited to share what I learned with the world in my upcoming book. Throughout the journey, I lost others around me. As a result, I saw the people I loved suffering and scared. I set out on the most challenging journey yet — trying to write everything I found into a book about the mindsets and perspectives to living an enjoyable and fulfilling existence and why those things lead to fulfillment. It is my first significant attempt at trying to make the world a better place — a question I will ask myself at the end looking back if I have the opportunity.

In 2018, I graduated from USAFA with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a minor in German and was selected as a German Language Enabled Airman Program scholar. I commissioned as a 14N, Intel Officer, and last year was chosen to be the deputy of the United States Liaison Team – Romania (USLT-R). While at USLT-R, we helped strengthen the United States’ relationship with a critical NATO partner and was awarded Joint Service Achievement Medals.

As a German LEAP scholar, I was sent to a Munich Power Immersion Language Intensive

Training Event, where I lived with a German family who were also my tutors. The power immersion helped me tremendously, and after returning from my LITE, I took the Defense Language Proficiency Test and scored a 3/3 for the first time, and I could not be more excited. I have been shooting for that level of proficiency since I began this language journey! I thank LEAP for allowing me to get better.

On my Power Immersion LITE, my brain became predisposed to thinking in German. I would wake up, and my internal voice was in German: walking down the street, going to the gym, surfing or skateboarding. Everything seemed to make more sense: the city, the people, and the ebb and flow. I understood the culture, but now, I was at a place in the language to be in society and to blend in. There were no looks when I started talking, and I could understand all the conversations around me.

That invisibility is one of my most significant accomplishments: being a part of another culture, feeling accepted, feeling invisible, and being a piece of a society outside of my native country and outside of my native language.

I never had a specific goal in learning German. I wanted to be more proficient, of course, but now I have felt that invisibility would have been the goal. German has brought me the feeling of being accepted in another culture, opened my eyes to humanity, and helped me gain incredible perspective in my quest to figure out what we are all doing here on Earth.

So, I just wanted to say — thank you to USAFA for allowing me to visit and study in Germany many times and thank you to LEAP for continuing to facilitate my endeavors in German. Thank you to everyone who has helped me along in my journey. The German language has led to wonderful friendships and experiences that I will never forget and helped me find answers in this long journey. Studying German has truly changed my life.”

Growing up looked different than what many experience, but was nothing like the negative stereotype many may associate with Uganda or Africa at large.

“I had a happy childhood and was fortunate enough to attend good schools, and even got to travel a bit,” Nakimbugwe said.

Although her village was small, with roughly 3,000 people, Nakimbugwe feels as though she grew up with a large family spread across the globe.

“Apart from my sisters and brothers, we grew up with our cousins, aunties and uncles,” she said. “We are all really close and love to laugh. We laugh at and with each other, so I laugh a lot. I have family in every corner of the world – from Costa Rica, to the U.S., to China, to Australia. Look at me now in the Azores.”

At 32, Nakimbugwe had a steady job and was happy with

her life. Although it sounds cliché, I was compelled to join the Air Force when I saw a recruiting commercial, she said.

“I saw a Go Army commercial and it really spoke to me,” she said. “I remember thinking ‘What am I doing starting over at 32?’ I left it all behind because I knew this is where I was supposed to be.”

Nakimbugwe is now serving at her first duty station in the Azores. She leverages military capabilities by ensuring pay and allowances are allocated properly. In turn, this aides the 765th ABS’s mission of providing strategic communication and power projection platforms to support global operations.

“Airman 1st Class Nakimbugwe is the face of finance at the 65th Air Base Group,” said Senior Airman Ariel Ciprian, 65th Comptroller Squadron financial services supervisor and Nakimbugwe’s trainer. “She ensures our Airmen receive their pay entitlements, which minimizes financial stressors and promotes peace of mind so our members can execute the mission.”

Excited about her next assignment to Ramstein Air Base, Nakimbugwe is grateful for all

the opportunities the Air Force has given her.

“I love my job and what I do. I love being a small part of something bigger to help people," Nakimbugwe said. "I am very excited to see where this takes me in life.”

Ramstein Airmen enable Agile Spirit

Story and photos by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to Ramstein returned home after weeks of contingency training during exercise Agile Spirit 21 in the country of Georgia.

Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing supported Agile Spirit 2021, a joint, multinational exercise co-led by the Georgian Defense Forces and U.S. Army Europe and Africa, from July 26 through Aug. 6.

This was the first time the 86th AW participated in Agile Spirit, providing aerial port services, aerial assets, aircraft maintenance and supplemental joint terminal attack controller capabilities.

The 37th Airlift Squadron was responsible for providing tactical airlift capabilities for the exercise, flying over 211 hours and 70 sorties.

“Agile Spirit was an exercise meant to help promote regional stability and build our partnership capacity and interoperability with our U.S. Army partners here, the Georgian military and the other 15 nations participating in the exercise,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Matthew Frizzell, 37th AS Agile Spirit mission commander.

The 37th AS worked with the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade, Grafenwoehr, Germany, to perform personnel and equipment airborne drops.

“We worked with the U.S. Army to facilitate operations objectives and provide aerial assets for their ground forces training and maneuvers,” Frizzell said. “We dropped

approximately 34 bundles, four heavy equipment platforms and provided the means for over 348 personnel airdrops.”

During the exercise, the 37 AS’s loadmasters also played a key role in ensuring mission objectives were met. They were able to move approximately 422,000 pounds of cargo with the help of the Georgian military and U.S. Army personnel.

“Working with the Georgians has been a good experience,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Alexander Carlson, 37th AS loadmaster. “It’s been a unique dynamic and an ever-evolving process. We learned how to work with one another and accomplish our training objectives.

It’s been a lot of new beginnings for us and the Georgians.”

Georgia is a strategic partner to U.S. and NATO Forces in Europe.

Agile Spirit 21 gave participating nations the ability to exercise setting the theater, to plan, prepare and execute joint and multinational training in a real-time, realistic setting throughout the European theater.

There were many firsts and tangible successes for everyone that played a role in Agile Spirit 21.

“One big success for us was being able to launch 7 U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft in order to drop heavy equipment and personnel into a simulated contested environment out here in Georgian airspace,” Frizzell said.

We were able to demonstrate our maintenance capabilities, operational capabilities and highlight and generate our combat power from the air to the ground by being able to insert that force into a

combat zone and do it effectively, efficiently and on time.”

Exercise Agile Spirit 21 allowed allies and partners to connect personally, professionally, technically and tactically to create stronger, more capable forces during times of crisis. Strong relationships deter potential adversaries.

“The partnership we are building here provides a foundation for future operations,” Frizzell said.

“This exercise allows us to take each other's strengths and apply them to ourselves and builds a foundation for real-world instances, whether it be humanitarian, mutual support or combat.”

Throughout the weeks of the exercise, U.S. military personnel were able to live, work and socialize with their Georgian counterparts, creating a sense of comradery and mutual respect.

“It’s been great working with our Georgian partners,” Frizzell said. We’ve been able to learn from them as well as help provide them with our operating capabilities and show what combat air-power looks like from Ramstein. The team out here has absolutely knocked it out of the park and we thank the Georgians for their support.”

Agile Spirit 21 enhanced U.S., Georgian, allied and partner forces' lethality, interoperability and readiness in a realistic training environment. Approximately, 2,500 military personnel from 15 allied and partner nations participated in this theater security cooperation exercise. Agile Spirit occurred at three training locations in Georgia — Senaki Air Base, Vaziani and Orpholo Training Areas.

Chaplain candidate keeps soldiers spiritually fit

In her hometown of Clarendon, Jamaica, Ruth Gakunga’s parents had high hopes their daughter would become a nurse. But the Chaplain Candidate with the 83rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 510th Regional Support Group, says she felt a different calling.

She enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2013, serving for nearly six years before entering the chaplain candidate program. Lt. Gakunga is now weeks away from finishing seminary and becoming a U.S. Army Chaplain.

Her recent experiences supporting Swift Response in Hungary, interacting with Hungarian, Polish and Romanian troops, and serving Soldiers in the European theater have convinced her she is doing what she was meant to do.

“I’m basically here providing for the soldier’s spiritual needs so they are ready for battle.” She said. “A ready soldier is a ready soldier, all around the board.

Spirituality is very important and

that’s why I’m here.”

Her work goes far beyond chapel services and Bible studies. On a recent hike to the Lichtenberg Castle in Kusel, Germany, with 83rd CSSB Commander Lt. Col. Andrea Talbert, Gakunga saw a couple with a small child having a heated discussion.

The married Soldiers had planned to take first birthday photos of their child, but their disagreement had created anything but a celebratory atmosphere.

“We were about to go up the mountain, and the husband slammed the car door and walked away,” said Gakunga. Concerned, Gakunga wanted to find him. When she and Talbert turned back, they found the wife with the baby. The mother shared a bit about the situation, and the husband eventually returned.

“God put them in my path,” said Gakunga. “And we all sat down and talked at this public hiking site.”

Talbert watched the baby so the couple could talk.

“I was able to get them together and have them say their peace,”

said Gakunga. “As a young couple with a new baby, they needed some tools to navigate their new life.”

The impromptu counseling session went well, and Gakunga received a commendation for her efforts, with her commander remarking that she witnessed Gakunga save two lives that day.

That one on one interaction is Gakunga’s favorite part of her job. She views every opportunity to help someone as evidence of God’s love, as He sees fit to put people in her path.

“I’m just amazed at God’s eternal care for people,” she said. “He will move mountains for people.”

As she prepares to become a 56-Alpha (Chaplain), she is praying about going from reserve duty to active duty. It’s not a question of if, but of when, as she and her husband Michael raise their children Abigail, age two, and one-year-old Joshua.

No matter the timeline, Gakunga has faith that she will be in the right place at the right time.

Spirit of giving: Ramstein Airmen meet community needs

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to Ramstein Air Base, load a bus full of toys and clothes in preparation for a humanitarian event for the children of Vaziani, Georgia, during exercise Agile Spirit 21 at Tbilisi, Georgia, July 31. The Airmen arrived in Tbilisi with a cargo container full of toys and clothes that were donated by family and Airmen from across the Kaiserslautern Military Community. V Corps strengthens bond between US, Poland during welcome ceremony

FORT KNOX, KY. — The U.S. Army’s Fifth Corps held a welcome ceremony for Maj. Gen. Adam Joks, Deputy Commanding General of Interoperability, and Brig. Gen. Matthew Van Wagenen, Deputy Commanding General of Maneuver, at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Aug. 4.

The ceremony consisted of a color guard led by Staff Sgt. Amber Ravenall, the I Corps Army Band, as well as the 3rd Cavalry Regiment Firing Battery. Lt. Gen. John Kolasheski, V Corps commanding general, gave the opening remarks and welcomed Van Wagenen, Joks, and family to V Corps.

“Today is an important milestone for this headquarters, but it is also an important day for the United States and Poland,” said Kolasheski. “Today marks the first time since the Revolutionary War that a very senior Polish officer has been assigned to a U.S. military outfit.”

Joks, a graduate of the National Defense Academy in Warsaw, Poland, is coming to V Corps after commanding NATO’s Joint Force Training Centre, Bydgoszcz, Poland. As DCG-I, he will focus on improving the integration of personnel, systems, and processes with European allies and partners.

During the ceremony, Joks spoke on his responsibilities to V Corps and bolstering the U.S.-Polish relationship.

“As Deputy Commander for Interoperability, we will make the Victory Corps more interoperable with NATO, and ensure integration with Poland’s armed forces hosting the Victory Corps forward headquarters,” said Maj. Gen. Joks.

“Promoting interoperability is a central point in the Victory Corps’ mission statement and I am committed to helping the commander and the corps team make that happen. As the Victory Corps motto states: ‘It Will Be Done!’”

Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, U.S. Army Europe and Africa commanding general, is confident Joks’ presence will strengthen the bond shared by the U.S. and Poland.

“Welcoming Maj. Gen. Joks as part of the V Corps team is a true testament to the trust and bond shared by the U.S. and Poland, not only as NATO allies in deterring aggression in the region, but also as friends and host to our U.S. Soldiers who rotate through Poland as part of Atlantic Resolve and the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence,” said Cavoli. “We continue to work with our Polish allies to find new ways to strengthen U.S.-Polish defense relations, NATO unity and transatlantic security.”

Although Van Wagenen has officially been a part of V Corps since May, V Corps officially welcomed him as Deputy Commanding General for Maneuver during the ceremony.

“It speaks volumes to his humble character and team spirit that

he got to work immediately with no formalities or ceremony,” said Lt. Gen. Kolasheski. “Those qualities are essential for a DCG.” Van Wagenen will serve as the senior officer at the headquarters in Poznan, Poland. He joins V Corps after his previous assignments as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations at the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, and the deputy commanding general for the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division.

Van Wagenen said he is honored to be a part of V Corps and is excited to see where the Corps is going in the future.

“It is truly an honor to stand before you today as a deputy commanding general in this remarkable organization and a privilege to stand alongside my friend, Major General Adam Joks,” said Van Wagenen. “Additionally, his role here at our main command post and mine in Poznan, Poland, at our forward command post exemplifies the special relationship that exists between Poland and the United States as friends and allies.”

Cavoli echoed the sentiments of Van Wagenen.

“With Maj. Gen. Joks joining the V Corps team as the DCG-I and Brig. Gen. Van Wagenen joining the forward operating base in Poznan as the DCG-M,” said Cavoli, “I'm certain our two nations will move toward a deeper and even more collaborative security partnership to meet current and future security challenges.”

Army leverages innovative industry partnerships for next-gen SATCOM capabilities

by DEVCOM Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Public Affairs Office ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. — Army Futures Command is developing next-generation satellite communications capabilities through the use of innovative partnerships known as cooperative research and development agreements.

The Army uses SATCOM capabilities to provide beyond line-ofsight (BLOS) communications that allow Soldiers to maintain consistent communications in all environments and situations, even when there is great distance between military personnel, or the terrain is dense.

The Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) Center — a component of AFC’s Combat Capabilities Development Command — is using SATCOMcentric CRADAs with multiple industry partners to learn how the Army’s tactical network can enhance BLOS capabilities through current and emerging commercial satellite constellations, explained Rich Hoffmann, an electronics engineer within the C5ISR Center.

The Army relies heavily on geosynchronous-earth orbit satellites, which are fixed in the sky and easy to track. Yet the high orbit distance delays communications and requires significant power when transmitting data from the ground to the satellite. Incorporating other satellite constellations — such as low-earth orbit and mid-earth

Enhancing the resiliency of the Army’s network is a vital component of Capability Set 23 — a collection of network capability enhancements informed by experimentation, demonstration, and direct Soldier feedback, scheduled to be fielded in 2023.

“We’re looking at what the Army is going to deploy years from now.

We’re leveraging future military satellites, but to get the throughput and the resilience required, we’re looking to add diversity to the architecture. We can’t afford to develop multiple military systems, so we’re going to leverage commercial SATCOM systems. First, we need learn about the specifics of the systems to understand how they could fit into the Army’s network architecture, and there’s where the CRADAs come in,” Hoffmann said.

communications requirements are very different than typical commercial communications, so engineers aren’t always certain whether an emerging commercial system will work for the military; thus, the ability to freely share information with potential vendors is essential.

In a CRADA, the Army provides personnel, facilities, equipment or other resources, with or without reimbursement, to identify and develop technologies to meet the government’s needs. While the exact details of the Army-industry relationship vary according to the specific agreement, this mutually beneficial relationship allows the Army to gain greater awareness of industry technologies and examine how it can help solve capability gaps. The agreements also provide clauses that the government will protect all information the vendor discloses.

In return, industry learns military-specific requirements, such as the ability for technology to withstand rugged environments not typically seen for commercial products. CRADAs also allow the government to share real threat data with industry partners, who can then adapt their technologies to meet and defeat anticipated threats. Finally, industry is also able to work side-by-side with Army engineers who can provide insight to what will work for the Soldier in the battlefield.

The C5ISR Center currently has 5 active SATCOM CRADAs and more than 100 active CRADAs across all of its mission areas, according to Hoffmann, who noted these partnerships shorten the timeline from identifying a capability gap to developing solutions.

“There are a lot of technologies that are really out of the box, that are really game changers. So now more than ever, we’re really excited to be working with these companies and understanding their technologies because they’re bringing a tremendous amount of capability for the battlefield,” he said.

The C5ISR SATCOM-related CRADAs are focusing on resiliency and diversity, explained Martin Ortiz, a C5ISR Center electronics engineer who oversees the Center’s CRADAs. “We get resiliency and diversity through the use of the different constellations: low-earth orbit, medium-earth orbit, and geosynchronous-earth orbit. Each one has a different potential,” he added.

Many of the technologies being developed under the C5ISR Center’s current CRADAs were tested at the Network Modernization Experiment (NetModX) 2020, allowing the Army to test and better understand the potential of emerging commercial satellite constellations and technologies, and how they can potentially be incorporated into the Soldier’s communications toolbox. New SATCOM technologies will also be tested at Project Convergence 2021.

“The best thing about the CRADAs […] is the relationships that form. These can be relationships that last for years and are so useful when looking at a new technology or looking at new projects,” said Ortiz.

In addition to industry, CRADAs can be formed with private and non-profit corporations (U.S. or foreign), state and local governments, and other federal agencies.

Army logisticians move armored power across Europe for Atlantic Resolve

by Jeff Jurgensen 598th Transportation Brigade The current iteration of Atlantic Resolve has demonstrated the Army’s ability to successfully move armored combat power from strategically located seaports to training and forward operating locations all across Europe.

As the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division arrived in theater to relieve the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division in support of Atlantic Resolve during July, more than 140 M1 tanks, 250 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, 35 Paladins and thousands of tracked and wheeled vehicles were simultaneously inmotion on roads, railways and at seaports in countries ranging from Greece to Lithuania.

To execute equipment staging and onward movement on this scale and across these distances, transporters and logisticians from commands like the 598th Transportation Brigade, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command, along with the supported brigades, engaged in months of detailed planning before the first piece of gear moved anywhere.

“This Atlantic Resolve rotation really challenged us as we deployed heavy combat power and supporting equipment into six different seaports located in Poland, Lithuania, Germany and Greece,” said Col. Joshua D. Hirsch, the commander of the 598th TBDE. “That means we were moving two ABCTs worth of equipment into and out of ports that were more than 2,200 kilometers apart.

Despite the complexity of movements like these, our teams accomplished the transportation mission safely and on time. We also demonstrated the Army’s ability to deploy tanks and armored vehicles virtually anywhere in Europe at a time and place of our choosing. That’s how we provide maneuver options for large-scale combat operations and for land-force commanders in this theater.”

The 1st ABCT, 1ID’s equipment arrived in theater at seaports in Gdansk, Gdynia and Szczecin, Poland; Klaipeda, Lithuania and Alexandroupoli, Greece. At the same time, 1st ABCT, 1CD’s equipment redeployed back to the U.S. through the ports in Klaipeda and Alexandroupoli, as well as the port in Bremerhaven, Germany.

“Importing and exporting equipment from two different units at the same port is challenging,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Ron A. Barker, Mobility Officer, 838th Transportation Battalion, 598th TBDE, and the lead for conducting port operations in Klaipeda.

“However it’s also a great opportunity for the Army and our Lithuanian partners to increase our interoperability and enhance what is already an excellent partnership.”

In Alexandroupoli, this Atlantic Resolve rotation represented the first opportunity to use the port facility to move tracked vehicles like M1 tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles. Previously, the port had supported the discharge and staging of combat aviation brigades and wheeled vehicles only.

“Alexandroupoli has developed into one of the most vital ports in Europe for the movement of Army equipment,” said Andre J. Cameron,

director of the Transportation Corps, Eastern Mediterranean (Greece) Detachment. “We’ve now proven we can move both aviation and armored units at Alexandroupoli, using both commercial line-haul and rail.

Basically, we can do it all here.”

Division arrived at the port facility in Alexandroupoli, Greece, July 20. This the first time the U.S. Army has deployed tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and other tracked equipment through the port. The 1st ABCT is arriving for its ninemonth deployment to the European theater in support of Atlantic Resolve.

The soldiers and Army leaders supporting this Atlantic Resolve rotation emphasized that it took a "Team of Teams" approach to achieve success both at the ports and in the onward movement phase of the operation.

“When you step back and look at the scale of this rotation, we really did have ‘tanks everywhere’ in our theater,” added Hirsch. “It’s the synchronization with our teammates at the 21st TSC, MSC, the rotational brigades and with our allies and commercial partners that makes the movement of this kind of armored power possible.

The amazing thing? No complaints. We couldn’t take our eyes off the scenery: snowcapped mountains, crusty glaciers, and waterfalls galore! And below us, the tidy mountain town of Chamonix. In the worst weather, the French Alps still deliver lofty vistas.

An outdoor enthusiast’s dream Chamonix is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. It is nestled along the Arve river in a steep green valley. And though the town is cute, it’s really above the green where the action is. Past the tree line, running the length of the valley, the seemingly sheer sides give way to the benches – strips of land running parallel to the valley where the mountain is flatter, or at least a bit more gradual in elevation. Then, rising sharply again, high above and barely visible from town, are the highest mountains in the Alps. It is a dramatic landscape.

There are lots of hikes to choose from in the mountains above Chamonix. It is wellsigned and easy to navigate with an extensive refuge system. The refuges offer a place to sleep for the night, escape the everchanging weather, and eat both dinner and breakfast (included in the summer rates).

French refuges – pack light, eat in style And let me just say that French refuges serve meals with style! We stayed four nights in refuges and had four-course dinners each evening – served to us in our base layers. My kids looked forward to seeing what we got to eat each night and I looked forward to not planning meals.

The sleeping situation varied; at all refuges, we slept in a bunk.

There are four people in my family, so at one refuge we got our own room. At another, we had a walled-off cubby in a long room with other overnight bunkers. You are required to bring a lightweight (ie: silk) sleeping bag liner. The refuges supply a duvet and pillow. However, current COVID regulations resulted in some refuges not offering us the duvet. We soon learned that

we simply needed to ask for it.

Staying in refuges, instead of hotels or camping, meant we needed to pack light. We had to plan for varying weather, though, so there was one of each kind of layer in our backpacks. And the kids carried their own. Water was plentiful out of springs or at the refuges.

Grand Balcon = great hiking The Grand Balcon Nord runs along the northern part of the valley, and we focused on this area for our first day of hiking. We took the Flegere gondola up and continued on a chairlift high up to L’Index. Our hike took us on a long loop past scree slopes, frozen lakes, snowfields, and down through meadows to the Flegere Refuge by mid-afternoon.

My kids were out of their minds playing in the snow in July. We barely beat a rainstorm back to the refuge; a trend that would continue. Luckily, the refuges also offered a space to lounge and read while afternoon rain and hail pummeled the windows. In the evening, things cleared and we could take a walk without seeing any of the day-tripping crowds. It was like the mountains were our own.

The next couple of days found us hiking along the Grand Balcon Sud, which runs along the southern slopes of the valley.

Again, we started with a gondola up, but this one went well past the benches to the peak of Aiguille du Midi (12,602 ft).

There is a visitor center at this dizzying height and a glass-bottomed walkway. There is also year-round snow and guided glacier hikes for the intrepid.

Halfway back down the mountain along the bench, we hiked to our refuge for the evening at Plan du Midi. It turned out to be our favorite of the whole trip; small and intimate perched on the edge of the bench with an incredible view right out our bedroom window.

Our final hike was the most incredible – along the Grand Balcon Sud from Plan du Midi to the Montenvers glacier. There were waterfalls galore, high rocky trails that felt as if we were heading into Mordor, and a beautiful glacier at the end.

Each summer, there is a tunnel

carved into the Montenvers glacier so we could see the dark blue interior. A cog train runs down the mountain from Montenvers back into Chamonix.

With two kids in tow, I chose hikes that were easily accessible from gondolas and refuges. But, for the truly adventuresome, there is the 170km loop called the Tour Du Mont Blanc that goes along the benches of the Chamonix valley then around the Italian side of Monte Bianco, and back around through Switzerland. Refuges dot the entire route.

Getting there: essentials Chamonix felt a world away from our home in Kaiserslautern.

We drove the 6.5 hours, mostly through Switzerland, and got our Swiss Vignette to drive on the Swiss freeways at the last German rest stop before the border. In France, we left our car parked in the free lot near the Flegere gondola for the duration of our visit. With Mont Blanc MultiPass 3-day tickets (I bought nonconsecutive days with a family discount) from Mont Blanc Natural Resort, we had unlimited use of any transportation in the area, from gondolas and chairlifts to buses and trains.

COVID regulations at this time allowed my husband and me to travel freely since we are vaccinated. My children both got free local COVID tests here in Germany, which allowed them to travel to Switzerland and France.

In Chamonix, they both got free tests at a Pharmacy downtown in order to return to Germany.

Be sure to check current regulations for all countries.

With only a long weekend to spare, we were pleased with how much time we had on the trail.

Thanks, mostly, to staying in the refuges where we always had a warm bed and hot food waiting for us no matter how turbulent the weather became.

Archery Parkour course Baumholder Outdoor Recreation has one of the best archery parkour courses in Germany, taking approximately 1.5 hours to complete.
