Celebrating Native American heritage across RAB Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Olivia Sampson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Every November, the Department of Defense joins the Nation in celebrating National American Indian Heritage Month.

It’s an opportunity to recognize the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, stories and important contributions of Native American and Alaskan Native peoples.

The American Indian Religious Freedom Act, passed on Aug. 11, 1978, is aimed to restore fundamental civil liberties to American Indians, Eskimos, Aleuts, and Native Hawaiians. It sought to enable them to exercise their inherent freedom to believe, express, and engage in traditional religious rites, spiritual activities, and cultural practices.

For Grace Elliott, military spouse, Sicangu Oyate or Burnt Thigh Nation member and Ramstein Officers Club employee, and her family, preserving their culture and heritage has been a multigenerational endeavor.

“My parents are older than the right to practice our culture without fear of prosecution,” Elliot

said. “However, we are always pushing for a way to show our heritage and pride for future generations.”

Staying in touch with her heritage and culture has been an important part of Elliot’s life.

“I can track back 7 generations.

I am the direct descendant of Chief Ironshell,” Elliot said. “Knowing our relatives and our ancestors kept us grounded. I believe one of the most important parts of [National American Indian Heritage Month] is that it brings awareness to the injustice and perseverance of the people of my culture.”

Elliot explains that learning to understand Native American customs and taking care to represent them appropriately are ways to celebrate her culture, highlighting the key differences between honoring Native American culture and cultural appropriation.

“To honor Native peoples is to listen to Native Voices and be an ally,” Elliot said.

She also shared the significance of using the platform of this month as a way to spread awareness about Native American specific campaigns. This includes movements to highlight and acknowl-

edge the higher likelihood of Native American women to experience certain types of discrimination and crime, according to Elliot.

“There are many reasons honoring National American Indian Heritage Month is critical to the continued growth in America, but understanding, compassion and honoring Native American culture is why celebrating this month is important to ensuring our diversity continues to make us a stronger nation.”

During the month, Ramstein Air Base participated in celebrating the culture and heritage of Native American Indian Heritage Month, featuring events including the Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society and the Zotigh Singers, which was live streamed at the Hercules Theater. They also had Library Storytime on indigenous culture at the Vogelweh and Ramstein libraries.

National American Indian Heritage Month provides an occasion to acknowledge the rich and varied cultures of Native American and Alaskan peoples, while also raising awareness of the injustices they have faced and their remarkable resilience.

One team, one fight: Joint forces, NATO units participate in C2 exercise HEAVY RAIN 23

by Senior Airman Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air and Space Forces Airmen and Guardians assigned to the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, 693rd Intelligence Support Squadron, and the 450th Intelligence Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, as well as joint forces and several NATO units, participated in exercise HEAVY RAIN 23 primarily in Grostenquin, France, and four other locations in Germany, Nov. 14-17.

The purpose of the exercise was to refine warfighting communications through various scenarios similar to what joint forces may encounter in the European theater, and promote the ability to adapt in an ever-changing operational environment.

“In order to decisively employ airpower at the forward edge of battle, we must train to deploy adaptive expeditionary communications in the contested, degraded spectrum environment we expect to encounter in Europe,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Mitch Brown, 1st Combat Communications Squadron commander. “In a nearpeer fight, the operating environment is changing rapidly, requiring commanders to employ forces dynamically.”

Being the fourth iteration of this exercise, HEAVY RAIN 23 saw unprecedented feats achieved by Airmen, and the integration of non-kinetic effects in exercise scenarios that made this year’s event especially noteworthy.

Most notably, HEAVY RAIN 23 was organized and executed by Airmen assigned to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron, a feat typically achieved at the wing level or above.

“HEAVY RAIN 23 looked and felt like a command-level exercise, but it was entirely planned, hosted, and executed at the squadron level,” Brown said. “I cannot say enough about the 360 men and women of 1st Combat Comm.

These Airmen are focused on getting after our biggest problem sets, and their dedication and talent for innovation is awe inspiring.”

Additionally, unlike previous exercise iterations, HEAVY RAIN 23 incorporated non-kinetic effects such as network degradation, Ultra High Frequency/Very High Frequency (UHF/VHF) degradation, and command and control of ground forces via high frequency radio during the exercise scenarios.

“C2 is a key operations focus for USAFE-AFAFRICA and all component military organizations, as well as our international partners, as we train to engage potential adversaries in an increasingly complex battle space that requires greater agility and effective adaptability,” Brown said. “During HEAVY RAIN 23, our teams not only exercised their ability to project command and control communications to the forward edge, but also exercised our ability to C2 our own forces in the field. By doing so, we are building processes for ensuring the C2 provider is at the right location at a tempo that is relevant to the fight.”

Throughout the exercise, participants were required to identify electromagnetic interference, report EMI with a Joint Spectrum Interference Report, and mitigate interference during the scenarios within an hour to maintain C2.

Participants successfully completed these tasks beyond their standard training environment by applying their skills in establishing and troubleshooting communications; understanding and perfecting EMI mitigation processes in a degraded environment; locating and identifying hostile intent; and showcasing the ability to establish initial operating capabilities.

Brown added that exercises such as HEAVY RAIN provide a unique opportunity for U.S. Armed Forces, allies and partners to implement these learned skills and refine their C2 and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities in a joint operational environment.

“We believe HEAVY RAIN and exercises of the like are absolutely critical to our national security strategy,” Brown said. “When we force ourselves beyond the tabletop, our learning will accelerate.

We will gain a deeper understanding of how to evolve our training and inform our resourcing in the out years, ensuring our experts are ready to fight in the spectrum.”

HEAVY RAIN is one of many exercises held periodically to maintain communication and data-sharing capabilities among U.S. military branches, allies and partners, Brown added. Working together assists in identifying and overcoming institutional barriers that would inhibit effective integration of joint forces, partners and allies in an operational environment — ultimately ensuring global security.

The medics from the four nations participated in multiple scenarios to discuss how each nation achieves their intended results and ways to combine them into the best practice. They visited locations such as the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Theater Patient Movement Requirement Center, 86th Medical Group Simulation Center and 86th MDG Flight Medicine “The aim of this assembly is significant, offering an unmatched opportunity for partnership nation members to collaborate with U.S. subject matter experts,” Angelov said. “Collectively, we explored the intricacies of aerospace medicine, aeromedical evacuation, patient movement, and enhanced our simulation centers, creating a fertile ground for events like these.”

The United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Office of the Command Surgeon hosted a medical knowledge exchange with NATO allies Denmark and Bulgaria as well as U.S. partner nation Serbia at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 28-Dec. 1.

The exchange granted the participants a chance to trade information and experience with one another to further integrate them with their unique mission sets and form best practices.

Each of the participants from the four nations walked away from the knowledge exchange with something different. For Angelov, it was about the medics coming together to learn from each other and strengthen ties and partnerships.

“This is important for us to compare and contrast how we do business in our aerospace medical program,” said Bulgarian air force 2nd Lt. Boryana Ralcheva, medical simulation training center instructor. “We want to see what works here and see if we can apply it to our program. We do not want to invent something new if it is already in service. This is a great opportunity for us and I look forward to the next knowledge exchange.”

A Wrightwood, California, native, Destiny serves as the Human Resources Assistant for Military Personnel Division.

Her primary duties include providing guidance and assistance to Unit Commanders, S-1 personnel, and Soldiers in accordance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures regarding military personal actions and reassignments. Destiny also screens Soldier records for assignment eligibility and coordinates with units to resolve any eligibility issues. She reviews and verifies all pertinent Soldier information to confirm final reassignment eligibility.

Destiny ensures all Soldiers receive their PCS orders promptly with all authorized entitlements for their PCS move.

She’s been working for the garrison for 7 months but had been on active-duty status for 3 years.

“What I love most about my job is having the opportunity to help people. Making a small difference in someone’s day or making something just a little bit easier for someone is important to me. PCSing can be a stressful time, so I strive to do everything possible to ensure Soldiers and Families are taken care of on my end and to give them one less thing to worry about.”

Full-scale exercise tests Lajes Field readiness

A full-scale exercise was held with the aim of renewing the certification for the use of the aeronautical infrastructure as an international airport, Lajes Field, Sep. 28.

The exercise, a collaboration between the 65th Air Base Group and the Portuguese Air Force, consisted of a simulated accident involving a civilian aircraft which caught fire during landing, resulting in a multi-victim scenario.

The exercise consisted of a simulated accident involving a civilian aircraft which caught fire during landing, resulting in a multi-victim scenario. In addition to fulfilling a legal requirement, “the drill is particularly important as a tool for developing the reaction capacity of the rescue resources and training them in the subsequent procedures to be carried out in the event of an accident,” explained Major Paulo Dâmaso, Head of the Air Base No.4 Accident Prevention Office.

Participating in the drill were various services from the 65th Air Base Group and the Air Base No.4, members of the Lajes Civil Aerogare, Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service, Public Security Police, Regional Health Directorate, Hospital Espírito Santo da Ilha Terceira, Praia da Vitória Health Center, Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Praia da Vitória, and Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Angra do Heroísmo.

The 765th Air Base Squadron Fire Department and the 65th Air Base Squadron Security Forces Flight were two of the offices of the 65th Air Base Group that

participated in the exercise. For the group, their first responder responsibility was paramount.

“Their seamless coordination was essential for initiating triage and crash recovery operations,” pointed out MSgt. Michael Hughes, Inspection Team Leader of the 65th Air Base Group.

The Air Base No. 4 Aeronautical Infrastructure Emergency Plan includes actions to be taken to deal with various types of emergency situations, where coordination and communication procedures are clear and the responsibilities and obligations of each entity involved are duly identified in order to ensure a rapid and coordinated response from all internal and external players.

According to Major Dâmaso, “Carrying out this type of exercise is important because it allows coordination with external resources to be tested and its ability to integrate with the needs arising from the specific nature of an accident response within the airport area to be verified.”

The plan provides for the use of external resources to train personnel and familiarize them with the Emergency Action Plan for the Aeronautical Infrastructure, with the aim of successfully carrying out rescue operations in the event of any kind of accident.

“Combining efforts through the activation of the Lajes Control Center and Exercising of the group Emergency Action Plan provided insights into what additional resources could be utilized in the event of this type of situation,” added MSgt. Hughes.

by Mark Iacampo U.S. Army Garrison Hohenfels Public Affairs In a perfect world, there would be no need for Emergency Placement Care providers, but as anyone who has ever looked into the eyes of an abused child can attest, we do not live in a perfect world.

EPC is a program designed to provide temporary 24-hour care for at-risk children when the child cannot be safely cared for by their natural parents or legal guardians. EPC providers offer a temporary safe haven for the children to be cared for while the family risk assessments are being conducted by Social Work Services.

“Child abuse” and “neglect” are powerful words that can instantly evoke graphic images in a person’s mind, but the perpetrators are often not simply “bad” people.

“Lack of knowledge of the developmental stage of a child and high levels of stress are

the two most common reasons for child abuse,” said Brandi Stauber, Installation Management Command-Europe Family Advocacy Program manager.

To combat this, when a child is placed with an EPC provider, SWS begins evaluating the parents, assessing both their strengths and weaknesses and developing treatment options designed to help parents provide a safe environment for their children.

“That’s our ultimate goal — to help the family successfully raise their children in a safe environment,” Stauber said.

Stauber said that’s why the program is designed to be temporary (ideally less than 90 days).

It’s also why EPC providers are so important and so needed.

“We have 16 locations across Europe,” Stauber said. “What we are hoping for is that at any given moment at any location, if there was an incident to occur where children needed to be temporarily removed from their homes for

safety reasons, we would have a home available to provide care.”

EPC providers need to be at least 21 years old and pass a background check, but Stauber said the most important qualification is having a passion for reaching out to a family in need.

Heather Kiplinger had such a passion when she signed up for the program in Wiesbaden a few years ago.

“I lost my mom very young, so any child that has to be away from their parents saddens me, really,” Kiplinger said. “If I could be a good home for someone else, I would love to be that good home for them.”

“It’s not going to be about monetary incentives or because it looks good on a resume,” said Stauber, although a daily stipend is provided to reimburse expenses. “It’s really about finding a way to embrace your community and wrap your arms around these families who are in great need.

munity and strengthening and supporting military families at a level that is difficult but can be very rewarding,” she added.

Kiplinger can attest to the truth of those rewards. She and her family served as EPC providers for a pair of siblings over several months.

“Taking them in at a time when they were scared and afraid of being taken from their mother and giving them a happy home for a bit was an awesome reward,” she said.

Stauber also pointed out that the longterm benefits to both the children and their parents can be life changing.

“We all have the opportunity to help each other,” Stauber said.

“For this program to work, it really does take a community of individuals to support these families who are in great need.”

EPC tries to match up children with the best possible families, with some homes perhaps being better suited to teenagers while another may be ideal for a child under 3. But in order to have that flexibility, the program needs more families trained and certified.

Army WCAP wrestlers eye 2024 Olympics after Pan American Games win

by Steve Warns U.S. Army Installation Management Command Public Affairs By his own admission, Spc. Kamal Bey gave a “C-level” performance during the Greco-Roman Wrestling portion of the Pan American Games.

But “C-level” Bey was more than his foes could handle as the U.S. Army WCAP Soldier-Athlete won his first international gold medal and prepares for the season that will culminate in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Bey dominated David Choc Huoc of the Independent Athletes Team 9-1 by technical superiority; edged Cuba’s Yosvanys Pena Flores 4-3 in the quarterfinals; earned another technical superiority win over Chile’s Eduardo Bernal 9-0; and pinned Brazil’s Joilson De Brito with one second left to win gold.

“Out here, I made a lot of mistakes,” Bey said. “At this point, all I can do is focus on myself and what I need to do to improve. This wasn’t A-level Kamal Bey wrestling. It’s not disrespect to my opponents. It’s

honestly just how I feel and how I rate my performance. We’re going to get back into the gym and fix what needs to be fixed.”

Bey’s resilience never faltered throughout the games. Against Pena Flores, he was down 3-1 going into the final three minutes, but he continued to press the action and force Pena Flores into making mistakes.

“I knew going in he was going to be a formidable opponent,” Bey said. “It was more staying calm and composed and think about the next move I was going to attempt. His whole thing was trying to slow me down. How to beat guys like that is not to let them slow me down and look for opportunities to score.”

Bey found two opportunities toward the end of the match with two pushouts to secure the victory.

Against De Brito, Bey was down 5-0 but again he kept his composure and stormed back to score 12 unanswered points before winning by fall.

“Everything went according to plan besides being down 5-0,” Bey said. “I knew I could get this guy tired and just wait him out. I was

waiting for opportunities to score, and when they were there, I took them. There is no better way to finish out a tournament like this than with a pin. It’s definitely something worth celebrating. A dominant performance deserves a dominant end.”

Sgt. Ildar Hafizov, meanwhile, captured his first Pan American Games gold medal by beating Ecuador’s Jeremy Peralta 8-0 by technical superiority in the semifinals and holding off Cuba’s Kevin De Armas 7-5 in the championship.

Hafizov jumped out to a 7-0 lead but held of a late charge by De Armas.

“I was expecting a fight, because everyone here who steps on the mat, they want to win,” Hafizov said. “I saw myself on the medal stand.”

While he was pleased to win a gold medal, Hafizov acknowledged he still has room to improve on the road to the 2024 Olympics.

“Specifically, I have to work on my tactics to see where I am in a match,” he said. “Just be on the attack and on the offense.”

Both also credited WCAP for

their continuing development as Soldier-Athletes and for allowing them to be all they can be.

“It continues to provide me opportunities to compete against high-level competition overseas and gives me a support system beyond what most athletes are receiving,” said Bey, who has been a Soldier-Athlete for three years.

“Knowing that everything is taken care of has reduced a lot of pressure.”

Hafizov, who has been a SoldierAthlete for the past eight years, echoes that sentiment.

“Our coaching staff (Shon Lewis, Spenser Mango and Bruce Robinson) and our teammates are helping us to get better every day,” Hafizov said.

And Mango noticed their improvement during the Pan American Games.

“It was promising to see them go out there,” Mango said. “We worked on quite a few things in camp before the Games and I saw them go out there and execute, make those corrections and come out on top. That always feels really good.”

Chaplains themselves are often seen around the base engaging and embedding with teams to assist with the welfare of service members and to gauge the overall morale of units. While they are out in the community, the unsung heroes of their office are working behind the scenes to ensure their mission goes forward unhindered. They are religious affairs Airmen and work to support Airmen and their families.

These Airmen work side-by-side with chaplains in most of the functions they support. From sermons in the chapel to counseling Airmen and their families, religious affairs Airmen are critical to the overall success of the U.S. Air Force’s mission.

“Religious affairs Airmen handle a lot of the administrative work the chaplains office gets,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Devon Grejczyk, 86th AW religious affairs Airman. “We handle a lot of the stuff chaplains cannot handle due to them being out

with units and other tasks they have.

We make sure they stay focused and can keep doing what they do best.”

Chaplains are the face of their organization. Some may think they are what U.S. Air Force Capt. Nathan Smith, 86th AW chaplain, calls “a one man band.” He says this could not be farther from the truth.

“We rely heavily on our religious affairs Airmen for a lot of what we do,” Smith said. “If it was not for them I would not be able to do most of what I do for the community.”

Chaplains are sometimes known for providing privileged counseling, where Airmen, civilians and family members may speak to chaplains with full confidentiality and without fear of reprisal. However, Smith says many do not know religious affairs Airmen can do the same.

“We can perform some of the same tasks that chaplains can,” Grejczyk said. “I see people who are a little afraid to talk to officers, so we can assist people if we are needed. I love to help people and for them to have a safe area to speak freely. We also have an area where you do not have to talk and is just for quiet contemplation.

Many Airmen and their families belong to faiths and religions from around the globe. By law, the U.S. Military has to accommodate their requests. Grejczyk says the 86th Chapel is more than willing to help.

“We help a lot of Airmen and their families find their preferred religious services,” Grejczyk said. “A lot of people think we just provide for the larger faiths, but we provide all sorts of services ourselves and find places of worship for other forms of faith.”

Chaplains at the 86th AW are typically embedded with units on base.

As Smith says, “We keep our fingers on the pulse of the organizations’ morale and welfare.”

“We cannot expect our members to take care of the mission if they are struggling,” Smith said. “We and our religious affairs Airmen try to stay involved and up-to-date with our assigned units. We want them to know we are here for them and their families.”

Not only does their office provide support to their assigned units, they are heavily involved with the base community by providing activities to bolster the welfare of all members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Grejczyk says he stays involved with his unit by giving them opportunities to get out into the KMC and visit famous local areas such as castles, caves and ruins.

Smith and Grejczyk said the best part of their job is human connection. They love to get out and meet people and make their day better, they explained.

“It is all about the people,” Grejczyk said. “Everything we do is for the people here. Without them, none of the great work the Air Force does would be possible. I know that goes without saying, but it is true. I love what I do because of them and I hope the Airmen and their families here know we are here for them.”

Panzer and Daenner Kasernes are well known installations in the Kaiserslautern American Community. Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Pulaski Barracks, Miesau Army Depot, Kaiserslautern Army Depot and even the geographically distant Germersheim Depot may ring a bell. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the new medical center under construction, Smith Barracks in Baumholder and Sembach Kaserne up on the hill are common names.

Higher headquarters is located in Wiesbaden and there is a unit at the Black Sea, while older residents of Kaiserslautern might even remember Holtzendorff Kaserne.

Now, you may ask yourself, where on earth is this mysterious twenty-third kaserne? The answer is right at your doorstep and just across Kaiserslautern’s main cemetery, commonly known as Kleber Kaserne.

The Third Division of the Army Corps of Bavaria was activated in 1897, comprised of the Fifth Infantry Brigade and the 23rd Infantry Brigade. After numerous organizational restructuring measures, Colonel (later Major General) Rudolf Dänner was appointed regiment commander in 1913.

In 1914 a substitutional battalion was activated in Kaiserslautern and moved into the installation built in a Neo Baroque style a year earlier. It is Kaiserslautern’s oldest kaserne and was called the Royal Bavarian 23rd Infantry Regiment Kaserne, or 23rd Kaserne for short, as the region was a part of the Kingdom of Bavaria at that time.

During World War I Bulgarian King Ferdinand I became the one and only regiment owner June 1917 (for roughly a year) and the name of the kaserne received an

with a spacious parade ground, a decorative entrance gate and a fancy bell tower with a domed roof. There were numerous administrative buildings and modern dormitories for soldiers. They were fitted with smart new uniforms to later combat in the war soon to begin.

After World War I during the French occupation, the kaserne was renamed “Kléber Kaserne” after Napoleon’s general Jean Kléber. Daenner Kaserne, dedicated to Rudolf Dänner, and Panzer Kaserne were constructed for the German Wehrmacht in 1937, Holtzendorff Kaserne was built in 1938.

In 1951 the U.S. Forces returned to Kaiserslautern and claimed ownership of the three kasernes in east Kaiserslautern.

In the early 1950’s the City of Kaiserslautern used the facilities to accommodate refugees but was forced to relocate them upon increased pressure by the U.S. Forces.

Ever since that time, the U.S. Army has utilized the premises with altering commands and organizations but kept the German names Daenner and Panzer (tank) Kaserne as well as French Kléber Kaserne.

Germans, on the other hand, still like to refer to the facility as 23. Kaserne with its picturesque clock tower that can be seen from afar. Not only is the kaserne and its tower unique, but its people are also amazing and recently served a Thanksgiving dinner in the Clock Tower Café. See Page 8

1. Go skiing (or snowboarding, or sledding, or snowshoeing, or…)

Berchtesgaden is an all-season joy when it comes to outdoor activities. But it shines in winter. The park and its surroundings offer an absolute smorgasboard of awesome places. There are six ski resorts in the vicinity, including the Jenner ski area, with guaranteed snow throughout the winter, near Schönau am Königsee.

The area is also fantastic for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snow hiking. Berchtesgaden offers more than 100 kilometers of groomed trails for cross country skiers, including high-altitude ones.

Snowshoeing is even more fun. Because Berchtesgaden offers so much wilderness, winter explorers can strap on snowshoes and hike…basically wherever they like.

But the best time of all just might be sledding. For any American who grew up sledding during the winter (and even for those of you didn’t), sledding in the Bavarian Alps is almost as good as it gets. There are dedicated sled runs in Berchtesgaden (the Obersalzberg run — talk about amazing scenery) and nearby Ramsau (the Hirscheckblitz run). Lots of little towns nearby have sled runs, too…be on the lookout for them!

Purchasing tickets online in advance is highly recommended.

3. Take a Königsee boat tour Even if some mountain peaks are a little too gnarly to tackle during winter, visitors can always find bliss on Lake Königsee. One of Germany’s most beautiful lakes (and its deepest…more than 600 feet deep, in some places), boat tours are offered year-round.

The trip is well worth it. Königsee’s iconic green color (caused by lime particles dissolving in the water), located at the foot of massive Mount Watzmann, and forested, mountainous surroundings make it a photographer’s dream.

4. Go hut-to-hut hiking For outdoor enthusiasts, Europe offers one of the best mountain experiences in the world: Hut-to-hut hiking. This allows hikers to get into the mountains and stay there for an extended period of time.

Berchtesgaden excels at this. The national park has five mountain huts, all of which are open during warmer months (usually May to October, but check to make sure before going). If you’ve never tried hut-to-hut hiking, you should. The food (and beer, and water) is always hearty, the company is grand (you’ll make friends from all over the world), and the views are unbeatable.

5. Check out the Visitor’s Center This may seem like an obvious one, especially for American national

park aficianados, where visitor center stops are more or less required. But in Germany, where national parks are free, you can go wherever you like most of the time.

That said, be sure to check out the Berchtesgaden National Park Center, which offers one of the best national park experiences out there. It’s got a fabulous information center, a theater, lots to do outdoors, and fun activities for the whole family. As a bonus, the views are — just like the park — superlative.

Getting there By car, Berchtesgaden National Park is 6 hours from Kaiserslautern or Wiesbaden, and 4 hours from Stuttgart. Check Deutsche Bahn for train information.

2. Visit Eagle’s Nest (but not during winter) The Eagle’s Nest is one of Germany’s top tourist destinations, and for good reason.

Perched more than 6,000 feet up on Mt. Kehlstein, it offers views that are among some of the most spectacular in the world.

It also has a rather infamous history.
