Tribal legacy: Culture, dedication, honor

Within the hot and dry land scape of New Mexico resides the Isleta Pueblo Navajo tribe, where the people with no electricity, no air conditioning or phones live off of the land, hunt, farm, and nurture a rich culture for their members, like future U.S. Air Force Airman Elena Gallegos.

Growing up on the reservation, she had to learn various skills and work different jobs while understand ing and practicing her tribe’s tradi tions, as they instilled the importance of bettering oneself and in turn bet tering the community. A way of life very similar to the Air Force.

“Life on the reservation is free and fun — there’s isn’t a large amount of stress that comes with living on the reservation, but there

In her youth, she lived off the land, learned various skills and tra ditions that defined her tribe, and accomplished her goals — but, she felt like she needed more.

“There is no hurdle you can not get over if you give effort,”said Gallegos. “I ran thin on the things I could accomplish in life on the res ervation, and I wanted to explore more of the outside world.”

Armed with the skills and work ethic that her tribe instilled within her, she set out for a new adventure filled with challenges and surprises and set her eyes on the U.S. Air Force.

Gallegos braved this new experi ence, but it did not fill her with fear and despair. Instead it gave her the excitement and drive to embrace the new lifestyle, to embrace the Air Force culture.

“The diversity, being around so many people with different cultures and different languages, was surpris ing since I never heard another lan guage back home,” said Gallegos. “It was very different and busy but also cool, and I didn’t expect to meet so many amazing people.”

As she progressed through the Air Force, integrating within the com munity, learning new skills, estab lishing important relationships and continuing to better herself, she’s reminded of how military lifestyle differs from living in the tribe.

“I got used to the busy life style that the military brings,” said Gallegos. “When I go back home, where it’s more relaxed and you

don’t over exert yourself, I want to get back to work.”

It was clear that these new expe riences were influencing the way Gallegos thought, but it did not change her at her core.

Living the military lifestyle didn’t change or alter her belief in her culture, but allowed her the opportunity to show others that you can stay true to your culture and the Air Force.

“I hope by talking about my cul ture that I can show others that you can be comfortable expressing your culture,” said Gallegos. “ I am grateful to have a place to share my thoughts.”

Though she isn’t stopping there as she plans for new avenues and pro grams to help others and strengthen diversity within the Air Force.

“I want to make a cultural pro gram with some other volunteers and bring a lot of diversity together to talk about our cultures,” she

said. “ I also want to create a selfdefense class, especially for women, and hope that I can help others in their lives.”

Gallegos’s determination to help others provides an important asset for Airmen at Ramstein Air Base and for diversity throughout the Air Force — but that is not the only community she’s hoping to help.

“I know my tribe has started to adapt to new tools like using solar power,” said Gallegos. “And I’m hoping that with everything that I’ve learned and experienced I can help the elders in my tribe see and understand the new ways, which then would help the younger gen eration adapt to the world.”

Every experience, challenge and accomplishment has guided Gallegos and she never forgot what defined her life within her tribe and her life within the Air Force — that to better oneself is to better the community.

Customers will now be required to provide electronic customs forms in order to ship out packages at the Northside Post Office and Kapaun Post Office. This is a huge step forward to decrease customer wait time in the facility prior to the start of the holiday season. Customers can create the electronic customs forms by visiting www.usps.com. Customers can choose to either (1) print the electronic customs form from their home or (2) by creating and printing the electronic customs form at the stations located in each Post Office’s lobby. How-To instructions will also be provided at each station.

Ramstein’s Patient and Family Partnership

“We were on our way back to our hotel and stopped by a conve nience store, and as I walked in I noticed someone unconscious on the ground. I went up and con ducted a vitals check on them and I noticed that they had no pulse and were not breathing,” said Tech. Sgt. Taylor Tompkins, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron explosives ord nance disposal equipment supervi sor.

EOD member earns AF medal for saving life

temporary duty taking part in the Humanitarian Mine Action course in Petersburg, VA, on how to teach partner nation military services about EOD procedures.

“I directed the gas station atten dant to call emergency services and started performing CPR on the patient,” he said. “I managed to get them to start breathing and have a heartbeat again. I was then able to maintain that until EMS showed up, who ended up stabilizing him.”

In this situation, Tompkins credits his experience within EOD and his extensive training with giv ing him the confidence and knowl

edge to take control of the scene.

“We deal with high-pressure situations all the time being in this job,” said Tompkins. “I think that gave me the ability to remain calm under stressful situations.

As a team leader in his flight, Tompkins routinely steps up into difficult or dangerous situations, said Capt. Todd Locke, EOD flight commander in the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron.

“Hearing that [Tompkins] put himself into a risky situation to help someone else out wasn’t sur prising to us,” said Locke. “It was just another day for him.”

It was not only his training and skill but who he is as a per son that has earned Tompkins an altruistic reputation in his flight, said Locke. He is consistently look

ing out for people and doing what he thinks is right.

“He put himself at risk for a stranger, and performed CPR for 20 minutes to save their life,” Locke said.

After the event, Tompkins wasn’t the person to tell his lead ership. They didn’t hear about it until an officer in charge of a course he was taking at the time reached out to them with the news.

This event is what earned Tompkins the Air and Space Achievement Medal, a medal rec ognizing Airmen for specific out standing events or performances in their job field.

“The only thoughts on my mind when I was going through it were to save this person and to give them a second chance,” said Tompkins. “I never expected any thing to come out of it.”

KMC expresses appreciation for host nation hospitality through holiday concert

The Kaiserslautern Military Community expressed apprecia tion to the host nation commu nity during a holiday concert in Kaiserslautern, Dec. 2.

U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Derek France, Third Air Force and KMC commander, hosted the concert to show thanks for the accep tance, hospitality and support U.S. forces and their families receive from the German popu lation in the local area.

“I want to thank all of you,” said France. “As our hosts and neighbors, you’ve done a lot for us, and we truly appreciate your steadfast support.”

Following the general’s remarks, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Band and the Rheinland-Pfalz International Choir took the stage to entertain the more than 600 attendees packed into the Fruchthalle, Kaiserslautern’s concert and festival hall.

“I know two things about this holiday concert,” France explained. “This event is a sym bol of our partnerships over the last 70 years, and no one came here to listen to me talk.”

This annual concert has taken place for over 30 years, and it is one of the most popular performances in the KMC.

“When fall comes, the local community counts the days until this concert,” said Elke Sittel, a host nation advisor from the 86th Airlift Wing. “Every December, hundreds of Germans come here to enjoy this musical delicacy.”

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Tyler Chenault, facility operations NCO, U.S. Army Regional Correctional Activity-Europe, is experienced in his field, serving at four facilities in eight years.

Chenault is a native of Kenai, AL., and moved to Spokane, WA., at 16 where he enlisted in 2014 as a corrections and detentions special ist. His current assignment is at U.S. Army Regional Correctional Facility-Europe on Sembach Kaserne in Germany.

“It’s been a great honor to work at this facility,” said Chenault. He praises the work of his teammates and appreciates working alongside Navy and Air Force liaisons.

USARCF-E is his first level one facility and comes with a differ ent mission than he is used to. Other facilities he worked at such as Northwest Regional Correctional Facility in Washington and Midwest Regional Correctional Facility in Kansas focus more on sustainabil

ity, whereas USARCF-E hold prison ers for less than one year.

“It’s a whole different mission and ball game when it comes to care, custody, and control for the prisoners in here,” said Chenault.

Chenault’s role works closely with the chief facility operations officer, to keep team components working cohesively to ensure the prisoners are taken care of. Chenault says his job is easy but comes with its challenges, espe cially psychologically.

“You can’t freely leave the pris on,” said Chenault. “You can’t have your electronics. It’s kind of like you’re living in the prison while you’re working.”

Chenault does enjoy his work hours inside the facility by getting to know his coworkers. Without all the distractions, he and his coworkers are left with more than enough face-to-face time. Chenault says working in a corrections facil ity develops his skills and respect for others because he is learning their backgrounds and different opinions.

“No matter who it is and

they have done, they are still humans,” said Chenault.

New Army Corrections Specialist sees multiple career opportunities ahead

U.S. Army Spc. Nathan Roy, U.S. Army Regional Correctional Activity-Europe, is in the early stag es of his military career and rec ognizes the career opportunities in front of him.

Roy enlisted over two years ago from Brownwood, TX., as a correc tions and detentions specialist and he believes his life changed for the better.

“I have improved my life dra matically since joining the mili tary,” said Roy.

The U.S. Army Regional Correction Facility-Europe in Germany is Roy’s first duty station. He explains the profession of a Soldier to be fairly simple, consist ing of following regulations and obeying general orders.

“It’s not complicated,” said Roy. Before enlisting, Roy worked several jobs and moved around often.

“It’s better than any civilian job you will ever have,” is what Roy tells his friends back home.

Although Roy does not plan to leave the military anytime soon, he asked a police chief for advice and discovered his prior law enforce ment experience combined with his Army experience will be sufficient for the police force.

“Now I have all kinds of job opportunities thanks to the Army,” said Roy.

According to Roy’s leaders, he is excelling above others in his

Rules in Germany for keep ing up your property or rental during winter may greatly differ from in the United States. The Germany American Community Office has put together a few guidelines for your safety and those of others.

According to Article 17, para graph 3, line 5 of German rules applying to public order, keep ing up roads and sidewalks is delegated to the owners and/or occupants of developed or unde veloped premises, accessible to pedestrians on a public public

road or adjacent to one.

Duties in winter include the removal of snow from the roads, sidewalks and crosswalks and very icy roads with sand or light gravel. In terms of proper timing, this means that winter responsibilities need to be car ried out prior to heavy pedes trian or road traffic. Salt is only allowed under extremely icy conditions.

This means that sanding has to be done in such a timely manner that roads and side walks are secure prior to traffic, but not later than 7 a.m. hours on weekdays. Under certain cir cumstances, however, clearing

may be required to start even earlier.

On Sundays and holidays, heavy traffic is considered to start around 9 a.m. hours. Winter duties must be carried out regu larly at an earlier time to ensure required safety. In the evening this responsiblity ends after the heavy traffic period, as a rule of thumb around 8 p.m.

Anyone failing to carry out their responsiblities, may be legally enforced to perform required snow removal or sand ing. Also, bear in mind that if a person slips and is injured due to negligence of removing snow and ice, you can be held liable.

Earning the next rank as noncommissioned officer is Roy’s immediate goal. Cybersecurity is another avenue he is consider

ing after military service. Roy is currently enrolled in college and on track to complete a bachelor’s degree in cyber.

US Army Reserve soldier competes at 2022 World Skate Roller Games

Sometimes a passion you never knew you had skates right into your life. It happened quickly for one United States Army Reserve Soldier who is now on pace to achieve his goal of par ticipating in the Olympics...100 meters at a time.

Sgt. 1st Class Markevous Humphrey, a native of Onley, VA., was always an athlete. Growing up he attended Nandua High school where he competed in football, track, and wrestling.

“I was actually the 2005 State Champion for my weight class in wres tling,” said Humphrey. “I also made the basketball team, but I couldn’t get to practices due to my football schedule.”

Humphrey didn’t know then, but he was already training his body for a sport he had never even considered.

One day, while thinking of things to do with his daughter, he decided skating would be something fun for them to do together. The two took up the hobby and continued to progress in their skill level.

He took things a step further by attending an adult skate night at the local rink and destiny stopped him in his tracks.

One of the wheels on his skates started wobbling so badly he couldn’t skate anymore. He walked his skates over to the in-house repair shop and started talking to one of the managers.

The Skate shop owner, who had seen him skating, asked if he ever thought about competing in the USA Roller Sports. I attended a couple of practices and didn’t like it at first. Then I joined the Skate city speed team.

This prompted Humphrey to attend a clinic which taught attendees the rules and proper form. At the event he met with some of the top roller athletes and started to believe he could excel in the sport.

USA Roller Sports is recognized by World Skate and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee as the national governing body of competitive roller sports in the United States. These sports include speed skat ing, figure skating, roller hockey, roller derby and other extreme sports within the United States.

After a little over a year with Skate city speed team Humphrey then moved on to Synergy speed team based out of Colorado. With this team he then com peted at his first Outdoor Nationals and came close to beating the previous year’s national champion.

Months after that he competed at his first Indoor Championships.

At the race, he placed second and garnered a lot of attention from oth ers who had been competing for years.

Since then, Humphrey, who typi cally competes in the 100 meter speed skating event, has placed highly in every race he has competed in and has become one of the fastest skaters in the sport.

After coming to North Carolina on orders, Humphrey joined the High Point speed club, based out of High Point, North Carolina to continue his racing.

Last month, Humphrey took a weekend pass, picked up his skates and set off on an 11-hour drive to compete at the 2022 USA Track Championship and Team USA trials in Hollywood, FLA.

Although he won silver (due to a faulty start) he was still invited to com pete in the 2022 World Skate Roller Games. The competition took place from Oct. 24 to Nov. 13 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The event was by invite only and featured the best skaters from all over the globe.

Just four years after beginning his journey into the world of inline speed skating he is now competing at all of the largest competitions the sport has to offer.

Individually, Humphrey has accomplished a lot in his short time with the sport, but he has also made huge contributions to his team as a whole.

“Markevous elevates the expecta tion,” said teammate James Springer. “He encourages and improves others as he does so for himself.”

Springer says Humphrey makes everyone feel valued. He remembers the first time they met. Although he hadn’t skated for two years it was Humphrey who walked up to him and greeted him with a hug.

“This community is tight knit,” said Humphrey. “I haven’t met anyone that I haven’t got along with, and we all try our best to mentor the children who are getting into the sport.”

Humphrey is currently on activeduty orders for one year, but usu ally serves as a Troop Program Unit Soldier.

A TPU Soldier, unlike active-duty Soldiers, serves part time, allowing them to earn an extra paycheck, go to school, or work a civilian job while still maintaining many of the benefits of military service.

These Soldiers typically train on selected weekends and perform annu al training which typically is two weeks long.

“My command has been very supportive of me,” said Humphrey. “They’ve allowed me to make up time so I could be present for my races.”

His success can be measured in many ways, but he says what’s most important to him is that he leaves the room knowing he does his very best and that everyone around him is bet ter because of it.

Humphrey trains hard to com pete...he trains hard to be a Soldier... and he always does it with a smile on his face.

“I’m always ready” said Humphrey. “I’ve achieved a lot, but I won’t stop until I bring home Olympic Gold.”

Strap on snowshoes

If you’ve never been snowshoeing, you don’t know what you’re missing. Snowshoeing is awesome. When you walk across the top of the snow, rather than plunging into it, it feels like you’re flying.

As a bonus, snowshoeing is for every one — children and first-timers included. There’s no long, painful learning curve like there is with downhill skiing or snow boarding. If you don’t have snowshoes, check with your local Outdoor Recreation

about rentals. Then find a snowy patch of nearby wilderness, and get out there!

Go cross-country

Cross-country skiing is the ultimate winter workout. It is also an incred ibly beautiful way to experience the win ter wilderness. Germany has a plentiful amount of terrain that is ideal for crosscountry skiing, much of it located near U.S. military bases/posts. While crosscountry skiing does take a bit of getting used to if you’ve never tried it, the payoff is worth it.
