COMMENTARY: King Comm – Our mission is to connect by Lt. Col. Eddy Gutierrez 86th Communications Squadron I come from humble beginnings, in the poorest country in Central America, Nicaragua, and know the sacrifices of my mother and her demonstrated servant leadership have guided me throughout the years. As our country suffered from internal conflict and wars, she immigrated to the United States with my older siblings to find a better life. Leaving her youngest kids behind (including me) until she was financially able to bring us across, was the toughest decision she ever made. I honor my mother’s sacrifices by being the first to earn a college degree, commission as an officer, lead others in the greatest Air Force in the world and provide my kids with a better life and opportunities that I did not have at their age. When I found out I was going to be the Commander of the 86th Communications Squadron, I was excited and nervous. Excited because this was going to be my second command but nervous in returning to the squadron after
being away for three years. On top of that, the 86th CS is not your traditional squadron. More than 420 personnel are assigned here and operate across many mission sets including supporting global Satellite Communications, serving as global telephone operators, and pushing 80 percent of data throughout the European theater in direct support of 10 combatant commands. The 86th CS, known as “King Comm,” is the largest Communications Squadron in the Air Force, but we do not do it alone. We work jointly with six co-located cyber brethren, and this Cyber “team of teams” is responsible for incredibly distinct but interconnected missions. The 691st Cyber Operations Squadron runs cyber enterprise, 1st Air & Space Cyber Operations Squadron runs the collateral network and global command and control system, 1st Combat Communications Squadron runs tactical communications, 693rd Intelligence Support Squadron runs the Distributed Common Ground System and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance network support, 603rd Air
Communications Squadron runs the Air Operations Center weapon system, and 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron provides specialized communications installation and maintenance across and throughout United States Air Forces Europe and Africa. Regardless of the mission, the 86th CS serves as the backbone and ATLAS strength behind them to assure our mission partners’ successes. During our annual fall leadership offsite, our team redefined its mission to align with lessons learned from Operations Allied Refuge, Allies Welcome and COVID, as well as with the National Defense Strategy. Our updated mission is “to connect and provide information superiority across the Global Gateway to warfighters.” Connecting symbolizes not only our ability to link the 1s and 0s, but more so connecting humans at the right place and the right time. Strategically, information superiority is our ability to assure our command-and-control decision cycle and deny or deter our adversary’s ability to impact our operational environment. gateway for all mobility and transport overseas, it is the 86th CS that manages the information gateway that ‘connects’ worldwide command and control priorities. Speaking of connection, our German local nationals represent decades of heritage and history with some serving up to 40 years across various Ramstein units and others spanning multiple generations in the same family assigned to 86th CS. Their dedication and selfless service is a constant reminder that we are one team, one fight. At King Comm, our priority is people first — because Airmen are our Family. To share my ATLAS story, in summer 2010, my twin brother, Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Miguel Gutierrez, was deployed in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with his Marine infantry
unit, where he suffered a gunshot wound to the left side of his skull while on patrol and had to be medevac. Throughout his evacuation, safety of his unit, medical transport, red cross notification to our older brother, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Omar Gutierrez, to link up with me stateside, the communications were seamless. Behind the scenes it was the 86th CS making these connections. At King Comm, we understand that our scope of responsibility is critical every day and can mean the difference between life or death. While I was not assigned to the 86th CS when my brother was wounded, I am now on the watch to ensure others can rest assure we’ll keep communications up. We are here to connect you with the rest of the world so hold us accountable. King Comm, Second to None.

Sports safety tips from your dentist by Capt. Se Ha “Cindy” Park 86th Dental Squadron “Down, Set, Hike!” Americans all around the world will be tuning into the Big Game in just a few days. No matter what the reason may be to watch this highly anticipated game — hometown team, party food, or halftime performers — many of us simply love the tradition and energy it brings. Before we try to reenact that one-handed diving catch or let our kids run drills in the backyard to be the next Patrick Mahomes, let’s talk about safety. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s reference manual on prevention of sports-related orofacial injuries, it was estimated in 2007 that about 46 million youths in the United States were involved in some form of sports throughout the past decade. The combination of tremendous popularity of organized sports and high level of competitiveness often breeds a great number of dental and facial injuries. One report from Dent Traumatol showed an average of 22,000 dental injuries in children less than 18 years of age. So, what can we do to help prevent these injuries? Prevention is key! Mouth guards or sports guards are easily accessible equipment that could prevent serious injuries to your teeth. They are typically fitted to cover the upper front teeth and designed to protect not only the teeth, but also lips, tongue, and other parts of your mouth. It’s especially important for those participating in high-contact sports or activities that involves risk of falls, collision, or contact with hard surfaces or equipment. This preventative equipment is available for your kids from primary dentists or from a local store. Treatment options for injury If there was an injury, try not to panic. When in doubt, it’s better to be safe than sorry. If there is visible injury, the bite doesn’t feel the way it did before, or lingering dental pain, make a visit to your local dentist. Minor cuts and bruising can usually be taken care of with some ibuprofen and ice. If you notice open cuts, significant bruising, or portions of teeth missing along with wounds, that might call for a visit to your dentist.
If the tooth is slightly chipped with no pain, the tooth can be smoothed or repaired depending on the size. If cracked or broken, teeth should be evaluated by a dentist as soon as possible. There’s a chance it may need a root canal at the time of injury or in the future. The tooth will require careful monitoring and will most likely require some sort of treatment. Missing teeth It’s scary, but it happens. If you lose a tooth, first try to find the tooth if you can. If it’s a baby tooth that gets knocked out, visit your dentist, and do NOT attempt to reimplant the tooth back into the socket. This can damage the developing adult tooth and cause other damages. The potential risks may not be worth keeping a baby tooth that is bound to fall out. For adult teeth, time is of the essence! VERY gently rinse off any
dirt or large debris and reimplant the tooth in the socket as soon as possible. Do NOT scrub or wipe the teeth clean, because it will remove and kill the cells on the root that are vital to healing and reattachment. If you don’t feel confident reimplanting, the most ideal option is to place the tooth in Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution, which is a buffered salt solution to maintain pH and osmotic conditions for cells to live. Several options of the solution can be ordered online and added to an athome first aid kit. If you do not have that at home, the second option is to place the tooth in milk. Do not place a missing tooth in only water because it could
damage the cells on the tooth. Call your local dentist and try to be seen as soon as possible! The best chance for reimplantation success is care within the first hour, so try to act quickly. Protection and prevention are
vital to avoid injuries. Check out your local store or dentist to get a mouth guard made. Injuries won’t keep us from continuing to participate in the sports we love, but we can take action to have fun AND be safe! Go team!

Fernando Garcia. “We have a very detailed plan and are executing with minimal deficiencies to mitigate delays.” Since April 2014, U.S. Army Europe and Africa has led the Department of Defense’s Atlantic Resolve land efforts by bringing units based in the U.S. to Europe on a rotational basis. Deployed units are ready, combat-capable forces able to conduct extensive bilateral, joint, and multilateral training throughout its deployments to more than a dozen countries in Europe. Moreover, Atlantic Resolve enables the U.S. to enhance deterrence, increase readiness and support NATO.

This is the third port operation in support of the 2nd ABCT’s Atlantic Resolve rotation this month, with earlier port operations in Vlissingen, Netherlands, and Aarhus, Denmark, bringing in more than 2,500 vehicles and equipment items in total. The 2nd ABCT, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, replaces the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. The 4th ID HQ based in Fort Carson, Colorado, will replace the 1st Infantry Division Headquarters as part of a regular rotation of forces to support the United States’ com-
mitment to Atlantic Resolve. Soldiers from 21st TSC’s 16th Sustainment Brigade will assist the 7th Mission Support Command’s 151st Movement Control Team, 446th Movement Control Battalion, in coordination with the 838th Transportation Battalion, 598th Transportation Brigade (Surface Deployment and Distribution Command), host nation support and commercial organizations, to discharge and stage equipment and vehicles, including paladin self-propelled howitzers, armored ammunition carriers, joint logistics tactical vehicles and other wheeled and tracked vehicles for onward movement to eastern Europe. STATE OF THE ART: Saarland by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern in the heart of Rheinland-Pfalz. You may already be familiar with your immediate vicinity, but there is much more to explore and experience at your “home away from home.” State of the Art is a series introducing Germany as a whole, but also highlighting an individual state or “Bundesland” every month. The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) was established May 23, 1949, with Bonn being the provisional capital. The states of Rheinland-Pfalz, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Hessen, Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein, the City States of Bremen, Hamburg as well as West Berlin, in its geographically isolated location, belonged to the federal republic. The small state of Saarland remained under French government until 1957. The foundation of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) followed on Oct. 7, 1949, including the states of Brandenburg, Thüringen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Sachsen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and East Berlin as its capital. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, both countries were reunited in 1990 to make up the current nation with 16 individual
“Bundesländer” and Berlin again became the capital. Germany is a democratic, federal parliamentary republic, where federal legislative power is vested in the Bundestag (parliament in Berlin) and the Bundesrat (representative body of the states in Berlin). The current government is comprised of a coalition of three parties, Olaf Scholz of the SPD as the majority party is the elected Federal Chancellor. Based on the party colors, it is often referred to as “AmpelKoaltion” (traffic light coalition). The SPD (Social Democratic Party – is represented in red), the FDP (Free Democratic Party - yellow) and the Grüne/Bündnis 90 (Greens/Alliance 90) – green). Each month we will feature a different state and provide facts about its history, heritage, industry and commerce, places of interest as well as experiences it offers. This month will feature both the states of Saarland and Hessen. Saarland — a small gem Let us begin with our closest neighbor, Saarland, located just 20 km southwest of Ramstein Air Base. It is the smallest federal state “Bundesland” in Germany and has a unique history. Saarland is 2.569 km² (992 sqm) in size and has a population of 990,000. It borders France to the south and Luxembourg to the west. Based on wars and conflicts throughout centuries, Saarland belonged to France, then Germany and again France, and the citizens developed strong Francophile ties. Up

and Hessen until around the year 2000, children learned French as their second language in school, rather than English. After World War II the region was occupied by French forces and in the Paris Agreement of Oct. 23, 1954, France offered to establish an independent “Saarland.” In a public referendum held in October 1955 this plan was rejected by 67 percent and this was interpreted as support for the Saar to join the Federal Republic of Germany instead. The Saar then joined West Germany Jan. 1, 1957, but the Franc remained legal tender until July 1959. After 13 years of separation, the “Kleine Wiedervereinigung” (little reunification) was completed. Mining through the Ages The state is mainly characterized by coal mining and heavy steel industry. Mining in the Saar region dates back to Celtic times but was first officially documented in 1429. Mining mainly concentrated on hard (black) coal and industrialization beginning in the 1850s brought with it a high demand for coal to produce steel and irons products, such as steam engines. There was a total of twelve mines in the region and, at peak times, up to 60,000 people made a living as miners underground. Mining activities near Schwalbach led to multiple heavy eruptions in 2007 and 2008 and an earthquake near Saarwellingen in 2008 accounted for the heaviest quake caused by mining ever recorded. In addition, various sinkholes were detected in the region. As a consequence, the government
determined that all mines would cease operations by mid-2012. However, Saarland continues to be a leading producer and exporter of heavy steel and iron parts, also for the automobile industry in the USA. A large automobile manufacturer is located in Dillingen, near Saarlouis. While mining has been terminated, coal is still required and long barges on the Saar River carry the “black gold,” imported from as far as South America to the various steel works. Saarbrücken and its historical treasures Saarbrücken is the capital and is located about 56 km southwest of Ramstein along the banks of the Saar River. It is also the largest city with a population of 180,000 and is just 5 km north of France. The Landtag (State Parliament) is located there with Anke Rehlinger being the head of the SPD (Social Democratic Party) as Minister President and has been in office since April 2022. The city has a lot to offer when it comes to culture and sightseeing. The Palace, a Baroque structure, and its gardens is a UNECO Cultural Heritage Site. St. Johanner Markt in the heart of the city offers cafés and restaurants, evening entertainment as well as a shopping district. Ludwigskirche (church) and its square are well worth a visit. You can stroll, relax or picknick at the Deutsch-Französischer Garten (German-French Garden) or try your luck at Casino Saarbrücken. A boat ride on the Saar River or a lei-
sure walk along the banks can be a delight. The bridge “Alte Brücke” was built in 1546 and is one of the oldest structures in the city. The Völklinger Hütte, formerly the largest ironworks, has been developed into a modern museum that not only displays mining equipment and the lives and times of miners. It is also a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site with varying displays throughout the year, such as an Ancient Egyptian Exhibition, and offers interactive activities for young and older visitors as well as spectacular events. https:// voelklinger-huette.org/en/ Saarlouis and the Sun King Saarland’s third largest city Saarlouis with a population of 35,000 was founded by French King Louis XIV, known as the “sun king,” in 1680. Remains of the French and later Prussian times can be seen almost anywhere in the city. A part of a fortress welcomes guests when driving into town and the lively market square, a former parade ground, with its old town hall, church and main shopping area is also venue for a number of fests and activities throughout the year. Enjoying a café au lait or a tarte flambée in the neighboring and very picturesque historic district will “catapult” you right into France. American traces in Homburg Homburg is the second largest city in Saarland with 41,000 inhabitants and it is just a “skip and a hop” away from the Kaiserslautern Military Community. for good “Karlsberg” beer and a nice town but also full of American traces? Follow them and learn more about unsung heroes and poets, pioneers and influential emigrants–and why George Washington’s Aide-de-Camp was the first American tourist who was known by name. Begin your tour on “Liberty Road” and opposite the former headquarters of the U.S. Army in 1945 when the Thunderbird Division occupied the city and the front page of the New York Times Magazine proclaimed, “We take over,” showing GIs in front of Homburg’s old town hall. Two centuries earlier soldiers from Homburg overwhelmed Cornwall’s troops at Yorktown and contributed to American liberty. Later, emigrants from Homburg were known as pioneers, founded Stockton (CA), influenced America’s political life, or fought in the Civil War on both sides. Strolling through Homburg’s Old Town you can also get an impression of the first houses in New York when it was still named Nieuw Amsterdam. Furthermore, today’s Homburg is interesting with cozy lanes, inviting pubs and restaurants — and many shops accept VAT forms thanks to a local initiative to pay tribute to long and manifold GermanAmerican relations and Saarpfalz district’s partnership with Henrico County (VA). Other unique attractions are the “Schlossberghoehlen,” which are Europe’s biggest sandstone caves, and the Roman Museum in Schwarzenacker, which displays remnants of early times. Homburg is also
home to the largest hospital complex in the region, the Universitätskliniken along with a university, which specializes in medicine. The Saarland may be Germany’s smallest state, but it is a real gem and has much more to discover. Äppelwoi in Hessen Another direct neighbor to Rheinland-Pfalz is the state of Hessen (HE) located northeast and almost exactly in the middle of Germany. It is also well known for its “Äppelwoi” (apple wine). The state offers a huge scenic diversity with medieval towns, rolling hills and is also renowned as Europe’s financial metropolis in Frankfurt. The state has a size of 21,115 km (8,152 sqm) and a population of 6.2 million inhabitants. Wiesbaden and a Roman Spa Contrary to common belief, Wiesbaden, rather than Frankfurt/ Main, is the capital of the state. Located on the Rhein River across from Mainz in Rheinland-Pfalz, it also has a history of being one of the oldest spa towns in Europe dating back to the Romans. The name translates into “meadow baths,” a reference to its hot geothermic springs and up until 2008, 28 of them were open to the public, with 14 remaining to date. The Landtag (state parliament) is located in Wiesbaden and Minister
President Boris Rhein of the CDU (Christian Democratic Party) has been in office since May 2022. The city has a population of 290,900 inhabitants, and with an additional 21,000 American citizens affiliated with the U.S. Armed Forces, it is the second largest city after Frankfurt/Main. The city is also famed for its architecture and climate and is sometimes referred to as “Nice of the North.” Wealth in the form of very luxurious villas, expensive shops in the pedestrian zone in the city center, where any top-notch designer label can be found, is evidence of one of the highest per capita incomes in Germany. It has been rumored that in former times wealthy and upperclass residents lived in Wiesbaden, while their “poor” or working-class counterparts resorted to living in Mainz across the river. Elvis Presley, a famous American singer, was stationed in nearby Friedberg in the 1950’s and often visited Wiesbaden for musical entertainment. Taunus mountain range The Roman Limes (defense wall) was built across the Taunus range, soft rolling hills north of Frankfurt/ Main. The highest peak is Grosser Feldberg with an elevation of 878 m (2,880 ft). The complete range is plentiful with forest and a popular spot for hiking, biking and crosscountry skiing and sledding in winter. Numerous cozy towns with semitimbered houses and a Middle Age atmosphere are also situated in the region. Don’t miss out on pictur-
esque Fulda, Marburg, Hanau or Wetzlar and try a sip of “Äppelwoi” in a “Bempel” (a big round wineglass with a green stem) and a typical Bockwurst during your visit. Frankfurt am Main The best-known city in Hessen is Frankfurt am Main, situated along the Main River. Its skyscraper skyline houses prestigious banks and other financial corporations is often referred to as “Mainhattan.” The German stock exchange as one of the world’s largest trading centers for securities is located downtown. The Deutsche Börse Visitors Center offers visitors insight into the world of finance in a multimedia display. Visit: https://deutsche-boerse.com/ dbg-en/ Frankfurt am Main, not to be confused with Frankfurt an der Oder, located in East Germany, is the largest city in Hessen with a population of 750,000 and has a very diverse cultural society with people of 180 different nations living there. About 1,000,000 commuters travel within or outside of the city every day, making it one of the busiest cities in Germany. In contrast, there are very peaceful and relaxing spots, such as the promenade along the Main River with cafés and beer gardens, or the Palmengarten, a renowned botanical garden. Historical places such as
the medieval Römer or the Nicolai Kirche (church) are well worth a visit and the Frankfurter Zeil is the main shopping district. Sachsenhausen is a popular evening entertainment area with a cozy “small town” atmosphere. The busiest U.S. Consulate in Germany, servicing up to 100,000 American citizens in the country, is also situated in Frankfurt. As the fourth largest airport in Europe, after Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle and Schiphol, Frankfurt International Airport (IATA code FRA) is a monumental hub for passenger and cargo flights. Originally established in 1912 within a vineyard, it quickly grew to a strategic airfield during World War II and served as a starting point for allied aircraft during the Berlin Airlift. Up until 2005, Rhein-Main Air Base was situated on the south side of the shared runway. Today the airport has three runways and two terminals, while Terminal 3, on the premises of the former base, has been under construction since 2015. On average, the airport handles 208,845 take offs and landings per year, services about 5.2 million passengers per month and 75,000 employees work for or at the airport, making it the largest employer in the region. Hessen, which calls itself “the land of experiences,” has numerous other treasures to discover and experience.

Donated blood saves lives

by Robert Hammer Military Health System Communications In recognition of National Blood Donor month in January, the Armed Services Blood Program reminds the military community about the importance of donating blood. “Blood is a critical tool to save lives and the need for blood is constant, from the patient undergoing emergency surgery to the person receiving treatment at a military treatment facility to our warfighters far forward,” said ASBP Division Chief Navy Capt. Leslie Riggs. “A steady and ready supply of quality blood products will always be needed.” Riggs noted that during the holidays and winter months, the number of donations often decrease, with things like vacations, illnesses, and weather changes hindering people from giving blood. “The military health care system needs many units of blood every day. The ASBP has a mission to meet that need globally, whenever, and wherever needed,” Riggs said. When the need arises, the ASBP will coordinate additional blood donation events, including large-scale blood drives that elevate the message of the importance of donating blood. “An adage within the industry is ‘the most-needed type is the one not on the shelf’; fully stocked and ready supply is ultimately what is needed and always the ASBP goal, regardless of type,” explained Riggs. He added that donors with
Type O blood are considered ‘universal blood donors’ while those with Type AB are considered ‘universal donors’ for platelet donations. These donations can be used for any type of recipient in certain situations, or when treatment facilities are low on other blood types. Established over 70 years ago as the official blood program of the U.S. military, “the ASBP focuses on equipping the warfighter with lifesaving blood products needed on the battlefield as well as in military treatment facilities. The ASBP mission is to provide quality blood products and support for military health care operations worldwide,” Riggs said. Besides collecting donations, the ASBP also tests, stores, transports and distributes blood worldwide. There are over 20 ASBP blood donor centers stateside and overseas. Each of the services operates multiple blood donor centers, with many donor centers traveling to conduct mobile drives in their surrounding areas or further out for large-scale blood drives. While ASBP blood recipients are most often thought of as service members injured in the line of duty, the ASBP also provides blood for service members and their families back home and in military hospitals and clinics around the globe. According to Riggs, tens of thousands of individuals donate blood to the ASBP each year, many of whom are repeat donors. Despite the intention of wanting to donate blood, sometimes an individual can be deferred for
several reasons, but they can often help in other ways. “There are several ways to help save lives with the ASBP, even if you are ineligible to donate at this time,” said Riggs, adding that if an individual is ineligible, they can check back later. “Most deferrals are often temporary and have set timeframes.” “You can also help coordinate a drive with your unit or military community group or volunteer at an ASBP blood drive near you. You can also help spread the word about the program and our mission, and encourage others to donate by engaging and following the ASBP on its social media channels: Facebook: @ militaryblood, twitter: @militaryblood, and Instagram: @ usmilitaryblood,” Riggs said. The ASBP is one of four organizations, including the American Red Cross, America's Blood Centers, and the Blood Centers of America, that ensure the nation has a safe and potent blood supply. The four agencies collaborate in times of need and during emergencies. “We work together during humanitarian efforts, on emergency task forces, and other connections,” said Riggs. “However, the ASBP is the official and only blood program of the military, and it is not affiliated with other civilian collection agencies.” If a service or family member is interested in learning more about or donating blood, Riggs suggested they visit the ASBP website at https://www. militaryblood.dod.mil/.

Rosenmontag Rosenmontag, or Rose Monday, is what comes next. This is a major highlight for many dancers, marching bands and float parades: streets are filled with entertainment for all. These days, masks are more extravagant and more modern, and often include caricatures of the faces of politicians and other public figures. You will also be able to find fancy balls and other events that involve dance performances along with a dance floor to try your own luck during intermissions.
FEBRUARY EVENTS INCLUDE: Altweiber Fastnacht The ‘Woman’s Carnival’ which happens on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, also known as Altweiber Fastnacht. This is a day when women can express their freedom and have a lot of fun. Tradition encourages ladies to cut men’s ties and place kisses on those they fancy. It is a flirty, fun event that many people look forward to every year!
Fastnachtdienstag The celebrations come to an end on Ash Wednesday. But prior to this is the much sought-after Shrove Tuesday, or Fastnachtdienstag in German. This is another great opportunity to attend one of the costume balls that are held all over Germany. It’s also the day most German school children either have the day off or attend school in a costume (as Americans often do on Halloween).

Costumes Fasching is very much a time where everyone, and especially children, like to dress up in fancy dress to take part in the fun. You will notice all the German department stores around you will start promoting their fancy dress costumes ready for the parties and parades of fasching. Narrenrufe Narrenfufe is the collective name of the various Carnival greetings that people call out to each other in the street during carnival season. Each city/region/village tends to have its own so its good to learn your local Narrenruf in order to join the fun and be careful of using the wrong one as people can get very patriotic around that time of year and you will soon become a traitor if you’re shouting Helau in Cologne. Kaiserslautern says ‘Kalau!‘ Wiesbaden and nearby Mainz say ‘Helau!‘ (perhaps one of the most famous ones along with Cologne’s Alaaf!)
Stuttgart has a different set of traditions involving witches and other scary costumes that were once supposed to scare winter away in order for spring to arrive. ‘Fasnet‘ is celebrated around the same time as Fasching and what one could compare to a Narrenruf there is ‘Narri Narro’ For Fasching parades and other carnival celebrations, check out “Unterwegs” on page 17.

utterly bonkers and terrific fun — get involved! Fasching can be documented back to pre-Roman times. These times were difficult for the average person, so the carnival season was a chance to be free, enjoy life and have some fun in a world where fun was non-existent for many. The masks and costumes of today date back to medieval times when they were not in place as fun decorations, but were worn as ways to avoid punishment and persecution, as carnival goers would mock the strict rulers of the day. Had they not used masks to disguise themselves they would have been caught and death would have been an inevitability. Fasching is celebrated in all Germanspeaking countries. Its timing in the year is poignant, as it is just before the fasting season of Lent, which is when many people will forsake food as a sacrifice for religious reasons. Fasching allows a person to have a huge celebration, indulge, enjoy and embrace all that is good before things are out of bounds during Lent. Germany is the country which holds the largest and most vibrant carnivals to celebrate the Fasching season, with nearly every city having its own celebration. The city of Cologne (Köln) probably holds one of the biggest carnival celebrations in the country. Many places of work see this time as a public holiday, though it is not yet officially recognized as one. This means to have the time off, your boss needs to be a fan!

While vacationing at a remote cabin in the woods, a young girl and her parents are taken hostage by four armed strangers who demand they make an unthinkable choice to avert the apocalypse.
