COMMENTARY: Finding independence as a military spouse by Airman 1st Class Kaitlyn Oiler 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Finding my career When my husband and I first started dating in 2016, he asked me if I was going to be ok with the challenges that can happen in a military relationship. I remember feeling nervous and excited for our future. I spent the next few years continuing to work on my education and starting a career in physical therapy until we moved to Ramstein Air Base. I put my career plan on hold while living overseas and found a full time job, but I still didn’t feel fulfilled by my work. In May 2021, I spoke with a U.S. Air Force recruiter about enlisting. At the time, the only person I had told about a possible career in the Air Force was my husband. I had spent my life with my parents deciding on what path my life would go, so I needed to make this decision on my own. I had entertained the idea of enlisting years earlier and struggled to follow through. I thought I was letting people down by not continuing with the traditional college

route even though I wasn’t happy. I eventually told my family that I was enlisting and would most likely leave for training within the next few months. I initially didn’t get the support I had hoped for at the time, but my family eventually came around. After so much time researching, no career seemed more exciting than public affairs in the Air Force. My first step Although everything seemed to be falling into place, as a military spouse, I knew that something would most likely come up that could affect our plans. About a month away from when I would leave for basic training, my husband and I started to plan for what life would look like while I was gone for training. He planned on taking me to the recruiter’s office the morning I shipped out and being there for me when I swore in and finally went for my dream. Instead, he deployed 72 hours before I shipped out and we were unsure of when he would be home. I finished packing the night before I left. The house was quiet,

it was a unique feeling compared to any other time he had left. Typically, I would have our dog there to comfort me, but I had taken him to a friend’s house since we would both be gone. The next morning I went to the recruiter’s office alone, swore in, and took a shuttle to the Frankfurt Airport. The next 24 hours seemed to last forever. I spent almost 12 hours flying to San Antonio, Texas, and boarded a white bus to Joint Base San Antonio. Everything seemed to be a blur after that. Training had begun and I always had my husband in the back of my mind, hoping he was ok. When I first heard his voice on the phone I cried. In a strange place, I was reminded of home. Overcoming obstacles Three weeks into training, I fell and hurt my knee. The medical personnel couldn’t determine what the injury was at the time. My knee swelled two times its size and I couldn’t put any weight on it. My dorm building didn’t have an elevator and I had to navigate crutches up to the third floor. Lucky me. I was terrified that my knee wouldn’t heal by the time I had to take a physical training test in the fifth week. Medical personnel had recommended I go through a medical board, but I pushed through and completed my test two days after I stopped using my crutches. I was determined to make it to graduation. Feeling at home again It’s the seventh week, and I am standing at parade rest in the Pfingston Reception Center, waiting to reunite with my family. I try to look around, hoping to see a familiar face when I lock eyes with my husband. He walks towards me in his blues uniform and beret. I start to cry, but never move from parade rest. The second he tapped me out we embraced, and I felt at home again. After spending six hours with my family, I had to say goodbye again. This time, for six months. I spent the rest of the night packing my bag to fly to Maryland for technical training.

Matthew Oiler, 435th Contingency Response Group team chief, after a static line jump at Alzey Drop Zone in Ober-Flörsheim, Jan. 20. Airman 1st Class Oiler said she was proud of her husband because he was successful on each jump during training and earned his wings.

Overcoming more obstacles, together My time in Maryland was going well and I enjoyed learning about my new job. My husband called and let me know that he was going to airborne training soon. This was exciting news and something we had waited for some time. It seemed like we were both doing great; I had finally started training for the job I had dreamed of, and my husband was about to accomplish his goal of going to airborne school. When my husband was preparing to enter jump week, he warned me that he wouldn’t be able to talk much, and I wouldn’t hear from him until the end of each day. His first jump day I patiently waited for some sign that his first jump went well. I was excited and nervous for him. He called me before I went to bed that night, but the news wasn’t what I hoped to hear. He broke his ankle on his first jump. It was so difficult to comfort him over the phone knowing I wouldn’t be able to help take care of him when he got home. Towards the end of my technical training, my husband called me on a break and said he had a chance to go back through airborne training. After discussing our options, we ultimately decided it would be best if he tried at his dream again.

Another chance at his dream Shortly after I returned to Ramstein following training, my husband found out that he would be going to training soon. I was nervous for him but was also still readjusting to being home after being away for eight months in a training environment. Once again, I’d be alone. I told my husband to call me after his first jump back. The time difference didn’t matter. His success from his first jump continued and he earned his wings. I was so proud of him. Having a front row seat to his success When he came back to Ramstein, he was excited for his first operational jump. I always hoped I could see his first jump, and because of my job, I was lucky enough to get the chance to. On Friday, Jan. 20, I watched my husband jump out of a C130-J Super Hercules with his team. It was so exciting to see him accomplish his goal. Finding independence as a military spouse My husband has always been an inspiration for me to chase after my dreams and to not let the hard stuff get in the way. I am proud to support my spouse, and I am happy that he also supports me in what makes me happy.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jahshield Baldes, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, prepares a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft for take off in Zaragoza, Spain, during exercise Chasing Sol, Feb. 1. Chasing Sol is a bilateral flying training deployment between the U.S. Air Force and Spanish air force to increase interoperability between NATO allies.

CHASING SOL from Page 1 said U.S. Air Force Capt. Nicholas Donnelly, 37th Airlift Squadron instructor pilot and Chasing Sol mission commander. “This gives us a new environment to exercise tactical airlift, landing zones, drop zones, dropping different types of equipment and personnel.” The objective of the exercise was to enhance interoperability and airlift capabilities among allied forces through realistic air operation scenarios. The exercise included Agile Combat Employment, a concept allowing U.S. Air Force Airmen

to operate from diverse locations with different levels of support. It ensures Airmen are able to deliver combat airpower throughout various military operations. Training with allies and partners is essential to the ACE concept’s success, by allowing forces to familiarize themselves with allied militaries’ processes in order to share responsibilities between NATO forces for a common defense, said Donnelly. “While we do have the same mission and same objectives within NATO, we all do our tasks differently,” said Donnelly. “These exercises help us iron out those differences.

U.S. Air Force Capt. Hannah Riddle, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot, flies a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft during exercise Chasing Sol over Zaragoza, Spain, Feb. 1. The exercise included Agile Combat Employment bilateral integration with aircraft, communications and deployment capabilities.

When it comes down to it, if we ever need to execute operationally we do not find those little speed bumps along the way.” Three C-130J Super Hercules aircraft assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron along with Spanish air force A400M Atlas aircraft and Casa C-295 aircraft participated in the exercise. U.S. Army and Spanish jumpmasters, airdrop riggers and drop zone controllers assigned to 5th QM coordinated static line and freefall jumps, along with cargo airdrops, with pilots assigned to the 37th AS and Spanish air force. The flying and airdrop operations in Zaragoza

offered a new type of biome for the U.S. Air Force Airmen and Soldiers to operate in. Additionally, members of the 86th Operations Support Squadron Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape flight put members of the 37th Airlift Squadron to the test in the new environment through a search and rescue scenario during the exercise. The scenario included looking for a downed aircraft and crew, while the aircrew from the simulated crash signaled to the aircraft to be rescued. “All of these skills are perishable,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Matthew Carlino, 86th Operations

Support Squadron Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape flight chief. “Sometimes you just need to refresh the information. Aircrew are no longer doing some of these skills during initial training, so this exercise is helping bridge that knowledge gap and maintain task proficiency.” U.S. forces in Europe live, train and operate with allies and partners in strategic locations across the continent. Exercises like Chasing Sol improve coordination between allies and partners to ensure a timely and coordinated response during peacetime and crisis.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz honors employee with 60 years of federal service by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Not many people can say they dedicated most of their life to a career in the federal service. For the past six decades, Robert Bigelow, chief of the Community Recreation Division, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, has proudly served our country through combined military and Civilian service. Born and raised in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, Bigelow started working at 16 years old delivering groceries. He joined the U.S. Air Force at 17 years old as an air policeman and retired as a special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations after almost 29 years of service. “I retired Nov. 1, 1989,” he said. “My entire career spanned the entire Cold War, the Berlin Wall went up when I joined the military and fell eight days after I retired from active duty.” Bigelow’s military career focused on law enforcement. He served on a tour in Vietnam with the 1041st Combat Security Police from 19671972 where he worked as a combat police instructor and provided training in Ranger small unit tactics. From 1972-1974 he worked on the Joint Drug Enforcement Team and concluded his military career working for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations from 1974-1989. Two years after military retirement, Bigelow worked as a private investigator before joining the Civilian service. He worked in sports

work place I would rather be, I enjoy the people and the organization I’m with, it’s a good life,” he said. Some of the awards Bigelow received throughout his career include an Award of Honor from the International Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association for his work in law enforcement and suppression of drug trade, two Joint Service Commendation Medals, three USAF Achievement Medals, and the Outstanding Airman of the Year Ribbon. Bigelow was honored during the quarterly recognition ceremony held at the Armstrong’s Club on Jan 17. “I could have not done this without the support of my wife, Kweta. She won’t let me retire,” he said with a smile. Bigelow and his wife currently live in Sembach. As far as retirement plans, Bigelow said that he never intended to reach the 60-year milestone however, he said he still has “no immediate plans to retire.” When that happens, he would love to travel and enjoy family time. Bigelow has a few words of advice for the younger generations, noting that listening is an integral part of communicating effectively with others. “Take time to listen to people, don’t always speak, you won’t be able to hear what people are saying,” he said.

Aircraft simulator keeps aircrew ready, lethal

Three pilots from the 37th Airlift Squadron prepare to operate a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft simulator at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 1. The 37th AS uses the aircraft simulator as a way to hone their skills in a safe environment, which costs a fraction of the cost of flying actual aircraft.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Thomas Karol 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Engine two has caught fire and engine three is hanging on by a thread. Aircrew tries to alleviate the situation. The fire goes out and the crew brings the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft in for landing. It is a struggle to keep control as the heavy plane comes in. Cross winds and inclement weather block their view. They are determined and do not break a sweat. They land the aircraft. After a moment of relief the simulation ends. A disaster brought to life by the 86th Operations Support Squadron Aircraft simulator. The 86th OSS simulator allows aircrew members to simulate flying a C-130J without the real-life dangers that come with it. This allows them to stay lethal and qualified without ever having to leave the ground. “We have the C-130J here at Ramstein that we use to support the 37th Airlift Squadron in their training needs,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Taylor Rigollet, 86th OSS commander. “We are able to train our aircrews on the platform and keep them current and capable of responding to whatever is needed.” Ramstein Air Base has a unique mission set, which requires some special training sessions to ensure aircrew stay current on their training. The simulator allows this to happen in a controlled environment. “One of the biggest advantages of the simulator is the safety aspect,” Rigollet said.” We can conduct training without running the risk of losing life or aircraft. It also helps because we can keep members here and do not have to send them elsewhere for training.”

The team at the 86th OSS has multiple ways of testing aircrew and ensuring they can handle whatever is thrown at them. “There are so many scenarios we can put our aircrew members through,” said Laurie Kuhl, aircraft simulator contracting officer representative. “We put them through a one week course each year where we make them deal with these scenarios without ever leaving the ground. It is satisfying to be a part of their mission and keep them safe and better trained.” Many electronic devices that people interact with today have software, which means it must be updated and the simulator is no different. However, personnel who maintain the aircraft simulator aren’t just keeping up with it, they’re exceeding expectations. “We just got an avionics upgrade called block 8.1, which allows us to fly different approaches and have connectivity to the rest of the joint force,” Rigollet said. “We will soon be able to connect to different simulators and fly in formation with aircraft from other U.S. Air Force bases from around the world.” One of the challenges to flying aircraft is the cost of operation. Fuel, repairs and man-hours can create a large bill to pay, but with the simulator, the 86th OSS can minimize some of those costs. “To operate a C-130J it can cost approximately $5,000 an hour to fly,” Kuhl said. “The simulator on the other hand costs $850 an hour to operate and has already recouped the $30 million investment to build the simulator with savings alone. We also save the Air Force an additional $350,000 annually by training personnel here at the simulator instead of sending them back to the U.S. for training.”

The usefulness of the simulator for the base is immense. However, with all of the quantifiable factors one thing is not measured and that is the pride it brings to those who operate and train on it. “I am proud to be able to be a part of this team,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Desmond Bell, 86th OSS senior enlisted leader. “There are so many great people involved with this facility and for us to be able to keep our aircrew trained and ready means we can continue to do what we need to do to be the best.”

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Taylor Rigollet, 86th Operations Support Squadron commander, stands with her team in front of an aircraft simulator at Ramstein Air Base, Jan. 31. The simulator is designed to train aircrew members how to operate a C-130J Hercules aircraft while minimizing the risks of operating an actual aircraft.

A proclamation on National Black History Month which cut the rate of poverty in Black American communities by nearly a third and cut the rate of poverty among Black children by more than half. My health care policies have dramatically increased health care access and reduced costs for Black American families and capped insulin bills for seniors at $35 per month per prescription. We are also working to address centuries of neglected infrastructure in Black American communities. My Administration is leading the replacement of lead pipes embedded in cities across America so that every child can safely turn on the faucet and drink clean water. We are expanding public transit and providing high-speed Internet to every neighborhood in the country so parents can get to work and children can do their homework in the comfort of their own homes. We are using every avenue to confront racial discrimination in housing and in mortgage lending and to help build generational wealth in Black communities. We are working to ensure that any housing agency that receives Federal funds will reach beyond the simple promise not to discriminate and will instead take meaningful, affirmative steps to overcome historic patterns of segregation, giving every person a fair chance to live where they choose. We are addressing the negative impacts of redlining and other forms of financial discrimination. And we are working to end a discriminatory system of appraisals that assigns lesser values to Black-owned family homes than to similar homes owned by white families. Additionally, we have invested nearly $6 billion in Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We have also taken historic action to ease the burden of crippling student debt — action which benefits so many Black students and families. help grow Black-owned businesses. I have set a goal to increase the share of Federal contracting dollars going to small disadvantaged businesses by 50 percent by 2025, which will bring up to an additional $100 billion in capital to these businesses. In May 2022, I signed an Executive Order promoting effective, accountable, and transparent community policing — delivering the most significant police reform in decades. Among other important measures that increase transparency and accountability, it raises policing standards by banning choke holds, restricting no knock warrants, and requiring body-worn cameras on patrols and during searches and arrests. It creates a new national law enforcement database to track records of misconduct, and it aims to safely reduce incarceration, support rehabilitation and reentry, and address racial disparities in our criminal justice system. Additionally, I signed three new hate crime bills, including the Emmett Till Antilynching Act which finally made lynching a Federal crime.

Equal access to the ballot box is the beating heart of our democracy. Without it, nothing is possible; with it, anything is. I restored the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, appointing top attorneys to oversee enforcement of civil rights laws, and the Department has doubled the voting rights enforcement staff. Every agency of my Administration has been ordered to expand access to voter registration and election information. These are all important steps, but I will continue to push the Congress to repair the damage to voting rights in this country by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement and Freedom to Vote Acts, to ensure every American has a voice in the democratic process. This year, on what would have been Dr. King’s 94th birthday, I was honored to be the first sitting President to deliver a sermon at Sunday service at his cherished Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. The life of Dr. King demonstrates that democracy is an enduring covenant that must be persistently

renewed; nothing about it is guaranteed. During National Black History Month, we honor and continue the work of Black Americans who have created a more fair and inclusive democracy, helping our Nation move closer to the realization of its full promise for everyone. NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim February 2023 as National Black History Month. I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with relevant programs, ceremonies, and activities. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtyfirst day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand twentythree, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-seventh. JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR. Graphic courtesy of defense.gov

During National Black History Month, we celebrate the legacy of Black Americans whose power to lead, to overcome, and to expand the meaning and practice of American democracy has helped our Nation become a more fair and just society. This country was established upon the profound but simple idea that all people are created equal and should be treated equally throughout their lives. It is an idea America has never fully lived up to, but it is an idea we have never fully walked away from either. The struggles and challenges of the Black American story to make a way out of no way have been the crucible where our resolve to fulfill this vision has most often been tested. Black Americans’ struggles for freedom, equal treatment, and the right to vote; for equal opportunities in education, housing, and the workplace; for economic opportunity, equal justice, and political representation; and so much more have reformed our democracy far beyond its founding. Black Americans have made a way not only for themselves but also have helped build a highway for millions of women, immigrants, other historically marginalized communities, and all Americans to more fully experience the benefits of our society. From the start, the Biden-Harris Administration has been committed to using the power of the Federal Government to address the longstanding disparities that have hampered the progress of Black communities. On day one of my Presidency, I issued an Executive Order to advance equity and racial justice in every policy we pursue. I began by appointing the most diverse Cabinet in American history. I have continued to nominate a historic number of Black judges to the Federal bench — including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. During the height of the COVID19 crisis, my Administration provided relief to hardworking families,

Oral health, nutrition

by Airman 1st Class Mathew Tapia 86th Dental Squadron Believe it or not, flossing and brushing your teeth aren’t the only things that help maintain a healthy smile. There is an interconnected relationship that exists between our oral health, diet, and nutrition. Poor diet during our adolescence could affect the development and growth of your pearly whites, as well as cause oral diseases. The American Dental Association recommends consum-

ers avoid having excessive amounts of naturally added sugars and processed starches. This is because their by-products become the acids that could cause dental caries, also known as “cavities.” This is where making healthy dietary choices could make a difference. Small changes, like switching from regular gum to sugar-free gum, could drastically improve your oral health. Studies show that there is a direct link between the foods that we eat and the risk of developing

dental cavities. Consuming large amounts of carbohydrates or sugars can lead to the formation of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that adhere to teeth. These bacteria produce acids that lower the pH balance in the mouth, leading to breakdown of the tooth that over time leads to dental cavities. To maintain good oral health, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children to limit their intake of sugary foods and drinks, particularly those consumed between meals (snacks). A study published in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry also found that children who consume sugary drinks have a higher risk of dental cavity formation compared to those who do not. Thus, while there are many risk factors that contribute to dental cavity development, one of the main influencing factors are the amount of sugar in our food and how frequently we have them. An effective preventive tool used to make teeth more resistant to

dental cavities is through minerals, like fluoride. Fluoride increases tooth mineralization that makes teeth and bones more dense and less prone to cavity formation. Fluoride is also bactericidal, which means it’s toxic to cavity-causing bacteria. Not only does the ADA recommend topically applying fluoride via toothpaste and at your dental visit, but the ADA also recommends having it systemically by drinking fluoridated water. This is an easy way to introduce beneficial minerals in our diet. This makes it a useful tool that can be easily placed in our diet through our drinking water. Of course, you’ll want to check with your dentist before introducing fluoride to young children to ensure the amount is age appropriate. Oral health is an integral part of one’s general health. Having good oral hygiene habits are just as important as the foods we choose to consume. Brushing twice a day and flossing, should be applied early in

childhood to prevent an increased risk of developing dental cavities. Compromised teeth can decrease appetite and reduce the ability to eat. When purchasing toothpaste, one should look for a toothpaste that contain stannous fluoride or sodium fluoride. Both help prevent dental cavities. If your live on Ramstein Air Base or Landstuhl, the water is fluoridated and safe to drink. However, if you live off-base, or on another neighboring military facility, the water is not fluoridated. However, fluoridated water is sold in all Kaiserslautern Military Community commissaries! While having a well-balanced diet is very important to proper growth and development, maintaining a healthy oral environment is just as important. Employing healthy eating choices like limiting processed sugars and snacking, introducing protective factors like fluoride in our diet, and maintaining good oral hygiene are all key to oral and overall health!

Tax Office closure 1 HRSC conducts Valiant Knight exercise by Ramstein Law Center

KMC Patrons, The Ramstein Law Center has seen a continuously reduced demand for tax preparation services over the years — down approximately 95 percent since 2001. At the same time, the number of free online resources, particularly for military members and their families, has increased steadily. Consequently, the Ramstein Law Center will no longer offer tax preparation services. If you do need tax preparation services, many free services are listed below. You will also find important tips to remember as the filing deadline approaches. The Ramstein Law Center will assist first-time filers as needed. Please contact us at DSN: 480-5911/Commercial 06371-47-5911 to schedule an appointment.

The Department of Defense offers MilTax software through Military OneSource. MilTax consulting, preparation and e-filing services are available now through mid-October. Services are 100 percent free for military members, their spouses and surviving spouses. MilTax is military friendly and built to account for deployments, combat and training pay, housing and rentals, multistate filings, living OCONUS and more. This platform can be accessed at the following website: https://www.militaryonesource.mil/financiallegal/taxes/miltax-militarytax-services/ Accessing MilTax: You must register and create a login. After you create your login, the MilTax software walks you through the process of entering information needed based on current Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state requirements. You may file up to three state returns for free (if needed) with MilTax. MilTax tax consultants are tax experts who are trained to understand the unique circumstances related to the military and are available to answer your questions along the way. The IRS also oversees 8 free platforms you can use to

prepare your taxes: 1. https://www.freetaxusa.com/ 2. https://freefile.taxslayer. com/ 3. https:// taxact.com/ 4. https://www.eztaxreturn. com/alliance2022/ 5. https://www.olt.com/main/ oltfree/default.asp 6. https://freetaxes. free1040taxreturn.com/ 7. https://www.1040now.net/ freefile.htm?code=21 8. https://www.fileyourtaxes. com/irs-free-file There are also a few tax preparation services at the Exchange and in the local KMC area that can assist eligible patrons. However, these services are not free.

Important to know: 1. The due date for filing your federal individual income tax return is generally April 15 of each year OR April 18 (to account for any potential holidays). 2. Being overseas, you get an automatic extension of 2 months to file your taxes. For example: If taxes are due on April 15, you did not file, and you are overseas, you have until June 16 to do so. 3. However, if you are going to owe money to the IRS, you must file your taxes by the original filing date (April 15 or 18 stateside and June 16 or 19 overseas), if not, you will be charged interest (incurred daily) by the IRS on the amount owed. 4. To avoid interest, you must submit an automatic extension form (IRS Form 4868) to the IRS paying your debt in advance. This can be done on IRS.gov and the above sites listed. 5. If you still cannot file your taxes by the original and/ or the automatic extension date (whichever applicable), you must submit Form 4868 to get more time. You have until October 16 to submit Form 4868. 6. Most letters sent to you by the IRS are for informational purposes or to correct any errors you or the IRS made in the tax filling process. Please read the letter and respond accordingly. Usually, there is no cause for alarm.

Story and photo by Pvt. Samuel Signor 21st Theater Sustainment Command

The 1st Human Resources Sustainment Center, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, held a validation exercise, Valiant Knight 23 on Panzer Kaserne, Jan. 26. The training was split into two situational training exercise lanes: Non-combatant Evacuation Operations and Deployed Theater Accountability System. The training validated the mission essential task assessments and served to identify improvements needed in training areas in preparation for upcoming missions, such as Silver Falcon and Defender. Valiant Knight gave the Soldiers the opportunity to showcase their skills and knowledge. “We’re working at such a strategic level that others don’t really get to see what it is that they do,” said Maj. Quincy Banis, personnel accountability and systems division chief, 21st TSC “This allowed us to recognize the Soldiers for all their accomplishments and the knowledge and experience they bring to the table.” The exercise began by splitting the Soldiers into two teams named, Alpha and Bravo. The teams consisted of information technology and human resources specialists. The first task tested their ability to set up a tactical LAN [local area network]. “So, we began by setting up GATR [Ground Antenna Transmit and Receive] communications. It’s a small ball antenna that shoots out to the satellite,” said Sgt. Gerardo Mota, information technology specialist, 21st TSC. Once communications were set,

the teams began non-combatant evacuation operations. The Soldiers were tasked with registering and creating a manifest of the evacuees, families, and their pets. “I’ve learned to expect the unexpected. No matter how hard you try to prepare yourself, anything can happen,” said Spc. Louisa Geneus, human resources specialist, 21st TSC. NEO operations present a mirage of challenges that Soldiers must overcome to accomplish the mission, such as the recent events of Operation Allies Welcome and Operation Allies Refuge, with the evacuation of personnel from Afghanistan. “I think the biggest thing with NEO is, it’s always going to happen in the face of catastrophe or some type of crisis incident,” said Banis. “Something that is causing such a huge catastrophe that [evacuees] have to physically leave their home, and just recognizing that, that is why the Department of Defense has put such a huge level of importance on them.” The second lane focused on the DTAS system. The teams were responsible for manifesting and managing inbound theater personnel utilizing Tactical Personnel System and uploading the manifest

into Aerial Port of Debarkation. “I will say for my team, we could have communicated a little bit better,” said Geneus. “But so far, our outcome is not as bad as I thought it would be. So, I’ll say we did pretty good based off my expectations.” Training exercises like this provide the opportunity for Soldiers to refine their skills and make corrections. “I think it was a great experience,” said Mota. “There were a lot of challenges on both ends, the 25 bravo side and the 42 alpha side and I feel like we all learned something collectively.” Banis mentioned, while there is always room for improvements, the training overall went very well and met the intent of the tasks they set out to accomplish. “We definitely have some things that we want to focus more on, such as the ability to better integrate our communications piece of what we do,” said Banis. “We kind of forget what the 25 bravos bring to the fight and how much we rely on them, and this exercise kind of imparts how important it is for them to understand the 25 bravos capabilities.” The training concluded with validation results, an after-action report, and an award ceremony.

Soldiers, Airmen, Industry and Government Workers listen to a brief during the National Defense Transportation Association Conference at the Ramstein Officer’s Club concerning seaport logistical operations in Europe, Jan. 25. The NDTA since World War II, has served our country’s national defense and homeland security as a trusted environment where government, military and private sector professionals can solve pressing challenges in the fields of logistics, transportation, and passenger travel services.

theater. This is happening so well because you can’t replicate face to face engagement with such a diverse group of EUCOM, AFRICOM, Air Force, NATO, airlift, sealift and many more professionals here. This is what we need.” Col. Everett Lacroix, support operations officer, 21st TSC, was the senior logistician present on behalf of the unit and the Army. This was his first NDTA experience, and he shared the same sentiments as Slabbekoorn. Lacroix manages and distributes equipment, ammunition and fuel on a daily basis in the current high operational environment as NATO continues to fully support Ukraine. “This engagement could not have come at a better time,” said Lacroix. “Together with our NATO allies in support of the Ukraine crisis, we look forward to continued success as we continue to protect every inch of NATO territory. This

Soldiers, Airmen, Industry colleagues and Government professionals all came to the Ramstein Officer’s Club Jan. 24-25 to confront logistical challenges with joint solutions at the National Defense Transportation Conference. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command received an invitation by the NDTA to have a collaborative discussion about complex problems within the theater, and work together to find solutions logistically within their European area of operations. The NDTA has assisted logisticians and the military since WWII where government, military and private sector professionals can solve pressing challenges in the fields of logistics, transportation, and passenger travel services.

Approximately 80 personnel attended this conference to discuss issues, network and finally meet face-to-face as the NDTA for the Europe and Africa region. The most important aspect of this engagement was finally meeting each other due to the delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Fionna Slabbekoorn, regional lead Africa, Maersk Line Limited, collaboration with one another to help service members win was the most important aspect of meeting with the 21st TSC and the Airmen within the facility. “This meeting is about enhancing the collaboration and communication between government partners,” said Slabbekoorn. “It’s about education and development and tackling challenges together. We are finding out how the 21st works in the theater and how our industries work to get cargo into

is one of the busiest, historical and mission critical times to be a logistician.” Within three separate suites, 20 coordinated discussions enabled specialists that plan, coordinate and synchronize logistical movements to conduct a dialogue and discussion on how to best assist the warfighter through all aspects of logistics. Karin Hellemans, senior manager, Europe Africa Government Trades, American President LLC., enforced that the service member on the ground is their top priority. “We are all here to support the warfighter,” said Hellemans. “That’s most important. That’s our bottom line commitment.” These discussions ranged from contracting new vehicles, future platforms, movement coordination throughout Europe and NATO Defence Policy and planning to name just a few.

Through these engagements, progress enabled new thoughts on initiatives through our NDTA partners, leaving a way ahead for the 21st TSC to keep the forward momentum to toward finding ways to become more efficient within their operations. Jason Trubenbach, director of business development logistics, Crowley Solutions is on board with assisting the Millrinders get across the finish line with the lessons learned and networking accomplished during the conference. “The work starts now,” said Trubenbach. “Let’s push forward with what we’ve learned and the connections we’ve made.” Lacroix and the 21st TSC share those sentiments and have plans to utilize their action officers to keep the momentum made to create new solutions and ease the burden off the warfighter.

Sesame workshop rolls out self-care content for Military families

by Katie Lange Department of Defense News Like many Americans, emotional well-being is something that many military families have said they’re struggling with since the pandemic started, according to Sesame Workshop, which works with the Defense Department to bring information to military families through its websites and free apps. In response to that, Sesame Workshop has launched new digital resources for military parents and children that offer simple strategies for mental health and selfcare. The resources include videos demonstrating the importance of

finding the little wins, being flexible with routines, meal planning and even learning how to be still and quiet. “I know it’s not always easy, and self-care doesn’t always feel attainable,” explained Sesame Workshop’s Tara Wright, who’s a mother of three and a military spouse. “But these resources can be a nice little reminder that taking care of yourself really does help your family, and it can also be done with your family. It doesn’t have to be apart.” For instance, in one of the videos, Elmo’s mom, Mae, is frustrated when she’s trying to make dinner. Elmo’s dad is away with the National Guard, and Elmo really BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON

wants his mother to play with him. In that moment, Mae decides she’s going to keep things simple and order a pizza, instead. “She makes the choice right there: ’I don’t have to do it all,’” Wright said. “We know that every night can’t be pizza night, but, in that particular moment, her act of self-care was setting aside a routine that was causing her a lot of stress and instead focusing on spending time with Elmo.” Wright, who’s raising three boys under age 5 while her Marine Corps husband is on temporary duty, said she definitely finds the videos relatable. After all, while children will enjoy the videos for the Sesame Street connection, the underlying messages are really for the parents. “These are definitely giving some modeling and encouragement to parents that it’s okay to not

be at our best all the time and that there are manageable, approachable things that we can do to feel a little bit better,” Wright said. “My kids don’t always understand why I feel frustrated … but they do understand that I’m making the choice to connect with them. I think that’s what the kids will see in these videos and, especially, what parents will see.” Sesame Workshop has several other military-related resources, including those that can support families dealing with deployments, long-term caregiving, transition to civilian life, grief and more. A military spouse and mother of three named Alexis told Sesame Workshop that when her husband was away on temporary duty, it was hard for her to explain to her 3-year-old why he couldn’t see his dad. resources that focus on temporary duty really helped, Alexis said. “It’s almost like watching the stages of grief take place — they get angry, they get sad, they’re trying to work through big feelings that they don’t understand,” Alexis said. “Having someone like Elmo who’s going through this, too … They can relate to how he’s having a hard time and look up to how he’s dealing with it. Just knowing that you’re not alone in this from someone as relatable as Elmo — it’s so comforting to have that.” For a lot of the families, it’s the examples of everyday situations that have resonated with them. “I think military families— everybody thanks us for our service, but, so often, the day-to-day challenges are not really well understood,” Wright said. “It’s really those day-to-day things that we’ve heard from families who say they’re just really appreciative that they’re being represented, and they feel seen.” The Sesame Workshop resources are free to families and providers and are available in English and Spanish at the Sesame Street for Military Families at https:// sesamestreetformilitaryfamilies. org/ and at sesamestreetincommunities.org.

famous cities in Germany, then visiting Lübeck is the trip for you. Founded 900 years ago, Lübeck, or City Of The Seven Towers, is simply one of the most stunning cities in northern Germany, with beautiful narrow cobbled streets, a lush river and a mixture of Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and Neo-Classical buildings. Its rich history and glorious architecture means it was quite rightly listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1987. And despite substantial war damage, there is still plenty to do and see in the city founded as the ‘first western city on the Baltic coast.’ Today its history still speaks volumes and no visit would be complete without visiting the Holsten Gate, the Church of Saint Mary and the Petrikirche which has a tower lift with stunning views of the town and Baltic. It is the Holsten Gate which is probably the city’s most famous landmark. Most walking tours start from here and it stands as a symbol of Lübeck’s importance in the medieval age. The round towers and bridge are flanked by two iron lions with a museum inside. The Church of Saint Mary has the highest brick vaulted roof in the world and is a model for about 70 other Baltic churches. You will find it opposite the MuK hall in the old town. Despite its beauty, Lübeck is also home to one of World War II’s biggest naval disasters when three ships filled with concentration camp inmates were bombed and sunk by the RAF. 7,000 were killed. It is an easy walk to the port to pay your respects. But if walking is not for you, it is possible to take to the water. Old Lübeck is actually an island on the River Trave and there are many short or pleasure cruises on offer. The town is also famous for its marzipan, and no visit is complete without tastTrave river panorama, Luebeck

ing some of the traditional almond sweet. Legend has it that in a period of shortage, all the food apart from sugar and almonds ran out, leaving local chefs no option but to create marzipan to feed the people. Like most places in Germany, Lübeck also holds a huge traditional Christmas market in December, which due to the city’s historic architecture provides a magical setting. There is a lot to do in the evening, with a plethora of good bars and restaurants, though most will not venture too far away from the traditional Germanic fare of potatoes, meat and beer. However, as with many European cities, it also has flavours of multi-culturalism, with an increasing Turkish, Polish and Greek population. This can be seen in some of the cafes and bars in and surrounding the city. And perhaps unsurprisingly it is

also home to its fair share of Irish bars. When it is time to leave, you can return back south, or continue your trip north. If you take the Autobahn, you can be in Denmark in under two hours. But that’s for another day… Getting there By car, the journey can take just over five hours from Wiesbaden/Frankfurt and around 6-7 from KMC or Stuttgart, so it’s really more of a weekend break, or a stop off en route to Scandinavia. It’s also quite close to Hamburg, so if you have a couple of extra days, you can cover both cities. Travelling by Deutsche Bahn takes around the same time as driving, but is of course a more relaxing way to travel even though, depending on when you book it, the DB can be more expensive than gas.

Due to regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, bookings and trips may be cancelled or postponed, and travel to neighboring countries may not be allowed. Please verify the status before making plans to attend. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies.
