New program turns civic leaders into honorary commanders
The 86th Airlift Wing leadership, mayors and local community leaders participate in Ramstein Air Base’s first Honorary Commanders Program, Feb. 4. The new program is designed to build connections between armed forces and the surrounding communities, while increasing public awareness and understanding of the wing’s mission, policies and programs.

Civic and base leaders came together for the ceremony, marking the first time in the installation’s 70-year history that the program was inaugurated. The Honorary Commanders program is designed to build stronger connections between armed forces and the surrounding communities. It provides local community leaders the opportunity to see how the Air Force conducts its day-to-day operations,
making members of the community feel like part of the unit. At the same time, service members grow stronger relationships and learn more about the community from regular interactions with the civic leaders. “Programs such as these create bridges and expand our communication with our amazing partners across the Kaiserslautern Military Community,” said Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “I’m excited about this first group that were hand-selected with the help of our mayors, and I know this program is going to continue to flourish.” “I am responsible for thousands of citizens of both the City
and Union,” said Ralf Hechler, Mayor of Ramstein-Miesenbach City and Union Community. “And we have about seven and a half thousand Americans that live in our community alone. We all have different histories and it is important for us to immerse our cultures.” “We make the decisions outside the fence,” the mayor added. “The U.S. military makes decisions inside the installations. I look at the connections between us. This program can open doors if there is some interest for Americans to see more of the community and vice-versa, inviting us on base to show us what they do. This is a German hometown—a home away from home.”
Latasha Smith: Warrior against COVID-19 Story& photos by Airman Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Since Jan. 4, 2021, more than 37,000 COVID-19 vaccines have been administered at Ramstein Air Base, to Airmen and eligible beneficiaries, with the help of an astounding Airman. Tech. Sgt. Latasha Smith, an Airman assigned to the 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron, was celebrated as Airlifter of the Week, Jan. 27, after leading the assault against COVID19 for over a year. Smith works as the 86 OMRS warrior medicine clinic flight chief, overseeing operations for multiple staff members that render comprehensive care for approximately 8,000 active duty service members, supporting 175 units and three wings. “We take care of the majority of their health care needs,” Smith said. “From checking blood pressures, vital signs and providing medications, we basically take care of their health and wellness and
ensure that they’re ready to deploy.” Since the COVID-19 vaccine has been on the scene, Smith has been the continual point of contact for all of the 86th Medical Group vaccine lines, directly overseeing the schedule, patient administration and treatment rendered by 48 medics. “From the moment that the vaccine dropped, she was there the whole time,’’ said Staff Sgt. Hannah Zink, 86 OMRS warrior medicine clinic element lead. “She assisted in creating the layout for the vaccine operation and led most lines from start to finish.” Smith is also responsible for streamlining the COVID-19 vaccine line, resulting in the inoculation of approximately 2,500 active duty service members, dependents and civilians, within the past 40 days. “With the initial surge of vaccinations, we couldn’t always receive Airmen from the Medical Group to man the doors, check people for COVID-19 symptoms or their temperatures, so the line was very slow,” Zink said. “Smith coordinat-
ed with the American Red Cross to fill those manpower and screening positions, which enabled a more efficient process to increase the number of patients vaccinated.” As a leader, Smith is in charge of a flight of 26 active duty members from which she receives extreme satisfaction ensuring that all members are fully taken care of and good to go, treating them as family. “The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Smith is service before self,” Zink said. “She’s absolutely one of the most selfless leaders I’ve ever worked with. I don’t think she ever goes home before 7 p.m., she’s always working on our education records, our schedule, reviewing our bullets that we write and helping us be better noncommissioned officers.” Her family is her “why,” Smith said. They’re the reason that she continually strives to be her best, so that she can support them and be an example. When she’s not with her military family in uniform, Smith loves to spend time with her 11-year-old

They now serve as honorary commanders to the wing’s six groups based at Ramstein. “As a kid, I always remembered there being big involvement with Ramstein Air Base,” said Mr. Jochen Krueck, 86th Medical Group honorary commander. “We were allowed to visit, walk in and freely walk around, but once the political and security climate changed, it all got very suddenly restricted. My goal is to bring back some of the community and social interactions that make the KMC what it once was.”

where she describes it as “peaceful and serene.” Smith plans on serving for at least 20 years, furthering her education in human resources and hopes to leave the Air Force better than she found it.

In light of the revised act, we want to remind our communities that testing capabilities at military treatment facilities are reserved for official purposes and individuals who present medical symptoms. Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An Airman from the 86th Airlift Wing Safety Office was selected as Airlifter of the Week Jan. 5 for his work as a weapons safety manager for the base. Tech. Sgt. Tommy Espinosa, 86 AW weapons safety manager, is responsible for providing risk assessment, interpreting explosives safety regulations and inspecting workcenters. Espinosa’s experience came into play when a combat-loaded aircraft had to divert to Ramstein after an emergency. He provided analysis allowing leadership to make appropriate decisions regarding the safest way to handle the aircraft. “When we have time to plan we can build big things like giant site
plans and tell you every single risk,” Espinosa said. “But this aircraft had to do an emergency divert and they weren’t able to use some of the things we laid out in the operating instruction. We had to do a quick analysis because it wasn’t a perfect scenario and we had to make the best decision possible.” The risk assessment Espinosa provides is rooted in hundreds of pages of Air Force and NATO instructions. “Every unit is different, but we’re trying to apply the same explosive safety standards to everybody,” Espinosa said. “I think the important part is getting with the units and seeing what they do because guidelines get applied differently in the munitions storage area versus how they’re applied to paratroopers for example. In the case of the diverted aircraft,
we handle combat aircraft differently than explosive cargo aircraft.” Because of the variety in units that work with explosives, Espinosa said he prefers to gain an understanding of their mission to better know how to apply those regulations. Espinoza says it’s a big change from former roles working behindthe-scenes. “This lets me out [to] interact with the other agencies and see how explosives and safety affects their mission. I like learning about the other fields or specialties that interact with that potential hazard.” Espinosa’s time at Ramstein is coming to a close. He was recently selected to become an instructor at the Air Force Weapons Safety School at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, where he’ll train the next generation of weapons safety personnel.

DOD, Nation celebrate Black History Month By Dave Vergun Department of Defense News Black History Month, also known as National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by Black Americans and a time to recognize the positive impact they’ve had on the history of the United States and the Defense Department. Black people have fought in every United States war, from the Revolutionary War through the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ninety African Americans have been awarded the Medal of Honor. Yet, throughout most of American history, Black service members were placed in segregated units. Desegregation didn’t occur until Jan. 26, 1948, when President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981 directing the armed services to integrate. Active-duty service members number 1,319,283; of those, 227,974, or 17.3 percent, are African American, as of December 2021. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2020, the Black or African American population was 41.1 million, representing 12.4 percent of the U.S. population. Notable Dates • Black people, both slave and free, served on both sides during the Revolutionary War. African Americans also served on both sides in the War of 1812 (1812-1815). Many served with the British in order to gain their freedom and resettle in nonslave nations, particularly Canada, Bermuda and Sierra Leone.

• During the Korean War (1950-1953), about 600,000 Black service members served in the armed forces. • About 300,000 African Americans served in the Vietnam War (1961-1975). • The two top-level Black Americans in DOD have been Army Gen. Colin Powell, who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III who was sworn in January 2021. History of the Celebration The origin of Black History Month is associated with the noted African-American historian Carter G. Woodson. In 1926, he initiated the celebration of Negro History Week during the second week in February.

February was chosen because that is the birth month of Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist and social reformer, and President Abraham Lincoln, who abolished slavery. The celebration was expanded to the entire month of February in 1976 by President Gerald Ford; since that time, every president has designated February as Black History Month. During his 1976 Black History Month announcement, Ford linked the commemoration to the nation’s 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence that year. On Feb. 11, 1986, Congress passed Public Law 99-244, which designated each February as “National Black (Afro-American) History Month.” Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom also celebrate a Black history month.

Protecting children’s teeth, one sealant at a time Valentine’s Day is approaching and with it comes chocolates, candy hearts and other sweet surprises, making February the perfect time to acknowledge National Children’s Dental Health Month. Try as they might, it is often hard for children to reach every nook and cranny of their mouths while brushing and flossing. This allows food and cavity-causing bacteria to hide in between their teeth, especially their molars, as they are rough and uneven. In order to aid in the prevention of cavities in children, a thin protective coating called a sealant can be applied to the chewing surface of your child’s molars. Dental sealants for a child are especially recommended, as well as for teenagers who are at a higher risk of tooth decay, particularly in their new adult molar teeth. Since the 1960s dentists have been using sealants to aid in prevention of cavities and have only continued to improve the process over the years. While they are no replacement for brushing and flossing, dental sealants offer protective coverage to keep plaque and food from building up in the hard to reach places. By sealing the pits and fissures in their teeth, sealants help prevent more serious oral health issues such as cavities, root canals or the need for crowns. The process of applying a sealant is simple and completely painless: 1. First the teeth to be sealed are thoroughly cleaned. 2. Each tooth is then dried and cotton rolls or other absorbing materials are placed around the tooth to keep it dry while the sealant is applied. 3. An etching material is placed on the chewing surfaces of the teeth to roughen them up, allowing the sealant to bond to the teeth. 4. The teeth are then rinsed and dried once again. 5. Finally, the sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and is hardened using a special curing light.

According to the Centers for Disease Control in 2016, only 43 percent of children ages 6-11 have sealants. The CDC report states that dental sealants prevent 80 percent of cavities for two years after application. They also continue to protect against 50 percent of cavities for up to four years. Dental sealants can offer protection against cavities for as long as five to 10 years. Your dentist will check the condition and care of dental sealants during regular annual or semi-annual dental check-ups. Over time, dental sealants can become worn or chipped and would need to be assessed. Make healthy choices even when you are dining with others By Human Performance Resources by CHAMP at Uniformed Services University You need discipline to stick to a healthy meal plan, especially when you’re trying to lose weight and reach your fitness goals. It can be tough enough to fight your own cravings and busy schedule, but it can be even harder when you throw family, friends, and social outings into the mix. So how can you stick to your meal plan, even when you’re not dining alone? The key is planning ahead, asking for support, and taking it one step at a time. Navigate Family Meals If you’re a parent, you want your family to eat healthy. But on those busy nights when you’re shuffling straight from work to afterschool activities, it’s hard enough to find the time to cook, let alone make sure you’re choosing the right foods. (Hint: the key is planning!) Make healthy meals more manageable with these strategies and tips: • Assess and plan. Before you begin meal planning, review your schedule for the week. Ask yourself: How many nights does at least one person in the family have an activity that goes until dinnertime or later? How much time is there, realistically, to prepare a meal between getting home and bedtime? Is there any time during the week when you could spend a little more time to prepare ingredients or meals in advance? Add up the number of nights you won’t have time to make dinner and you’ll need quick meals. • Write it out. Then with pen and paper, your favorite app, or using a 7-day meal plan template, lay out your plan. Pull out some favorite recipes to help you decide which meals

Once you create your grocery list, stick to it! • Get ahead. Prepare ingredients in advance — wash and chop vegetables and fruit, mix marinades and sauces, boil eggs, and cook whole grains (such as rice and quinoa) — and toss them in the fridge or freezer to use later in the week. Also, choose recipes and ingredients that are easier for you (frozen veggies that are washed and chopped, frozen whole-grains that heat up

• Communicate ahead of time. If you have special dietary needs, allergies, or preferences (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.) consider telling the host ahead of time or offer to bring something that fits your dietary needs. By getting ahead of the situation, the host will have a chance to prepare — and you’ll help avoid an uncomfortable conversation in front of other guests. • Get your confidence up. If you’re trying to stick to healthy choices, don’t cave to peer pressure. If it’s your day to indulge, have that extra cookie with your head held high! Many people underestimate how much they’ve actually eaten when those around them are eating larger quantities. If you can’t serve yourself, politely ask for the portion sizes or food choices you’d prefer.

Ready to respond A U.S. Air Force 86th Civil Engineering Squadron Fire Emergency Service section fire truck sits outside the fire station at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 4. Firefighters may work 24 or 48-hour operations, depending on their station.
Story & photo by Airman 1st Class Alexcia Givens 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Civil Engineering Squadron Fire Emergency Service section provides on-demand support for all emergencies on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Vogelweh Military Complex, Kapaun Air Station, Landstuhl Regional Medical Facility, and Ramstein Air Base. The section has eight departments that need to meet specific response times. Once the call is received, dispatch has one minute to forward the information, one minute to start responding, and five minutes to respond to the call. The fire department can be expected to respond to a multitude of calls, so Airmen serve a multifunctional role as firefighters. Airmen can react to either in-flight or ground emergencies involving aircraft, fire alarms, confirmed fires, medical responses, and motor vehicle accidents. “Realistically, we never know what the situation will be until we arrive at the site,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jacob Levee, 86 CES lead firefighter. When responding to a call, Airmen need to pull hoses, carry water cans and axes, read fire patterns, read wind directions, operate the fire truck, and solve equations to predict the amount of water necessary to put out the fire. “When responding to a fire, you need to know how much water to give the person fighting the fire because you don’t want to give them too much water,”

said Airman 1st Class Nathanael Johnson, 86 CES firefighter. “Too much water makes it hard to control the hose or causes unnecessary damage to whatever is on fire.” While on the scene, sometimes firefighters have to work with other sections of 86 CES to assist with the emergency. “I was responding to a call and on the scene a hot water pipe burst,” said Levee. “So, we had the issue of scalding hot water interfering with electronics, which is an overall dangerous situation.” Airmen train daily to ensure their readiness. The extent of the training may be different dayto-day. Firefighters have a yearly requirement for structural and live-fire aircraft burns. “It’s imperative that we be ready because of the wide variety of incidents that we can respond to and how we correct the situations once we respond on the scene,’’ said Levee. “Sometimes it’s a situation we haven’t seen before, but having the training teaches you the generalized idea and the best way to handle the situation.” Unlike Airmen from other squadrons, firefighters respond at any given time. Depending on the station, firefighters may work 24 or 48-hour operations. “It’s key that Airmen arriving to the station adapt because it can be hard waking up in the middle of the night and continuing to function depending on the shift we are working,” said Levee. During a 24-hour shift, Airmen often spend lots of time together, giving them time to engage in a way Airmen don’t experience in other squadrons. “We have to adapt to each other, and gaining that experience together is very helpful,” said Johnson. “When we arrive on the scene, we’re expected to be a jackof-all-trades, and having a team that is knowledgeable in each field is immensely helpful when we all respond together.”

Perfect Dessert for Valentine’s Day
by Tiffany Brock Contributing writer to MilitaryinGermany.com Nothing makes me happier on Valentine’s day than having a yummy dessert with my special person. Unfortunately, my busy life makes it nearly impossible to prepare one every single day; nevertheless, I often prepare desserts during holidays or when I have special occasions at home. Pavlova is my personal favorite when it comes to desserts and I prepare it whenever I feel like having something really extraordinary. SIMPLE PAVLOVA Main ingredients needed: • 4 large egg whites • 1 cup of castor sugar • 1 tsp of white vinegar • 1/2 tbsp of cornstarch • 1/2 tsp of pure vanilla extract • 1/2 cup of whipping cream • Fresh fruit (strawberries, kiwi fruit, raspberries, passion fruit) – as per taste • 1 tbsp of fresh lime juice

4. Now pour out your meringue into a circle on the center of the foil. I keep the edges of the meringue higher than the center portion, leaving a hollow space right in the center to add the toppings later. Put the meringue in the oven and bake it. I keep it in the oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes. But that is not mandatory; you can take it out of the oven when the egg whites turn a slight color. 5. Turn off the oven and leave the oven door slightly open so that the meringue loses its heat at room temperature. I take it out of the oven only when it is time to serve it. Carefully remove the foil and move the meringue onto the serving plate.
6. In a bowl, whisk the cream with the vanilla extract until it turns soft, then pour the mixture into the center of the meringue. 7. Finally, it is time to add the fruit. My personal choice is strawberries, which are very appropriate for Valentine’s Day but you can choose your favourite. Simpy smooth the top of the cream filling on the meringue with a spatuala and garnish it with the fruit pieces as desired. This dessert is visually such a beautiful center-piece for any romantic Valentine’s Day Dinner and tasty too – you are sure to impress!

How to prepare the Pavlova: Preheat the oven (adjust the temperature to 275 degrees F). Place the rack in the oven. Prepare a baking tray with foil. 1. Now, take the egg whites and beat them with an electric mixer in a medium-sized metal bowl. Use an average speed. If you beat them on high speed, it is possible that they get overbeaten. Mix up the mixture until you see soft peaks on the surface of the egg whites. 2. Then add the sugar over the egg whites as per your taste. I use two to three teaspoons at a time. Whip it properly until it is mixed well. Once I got lazy while whipping it and the end result was sugar particles emerging on the surface. You do not want that to happen to you, so whip it until the sugar is dissolved completely. 3. Next add the combination of cornstarch and vinegar over the meringue and fold it in. I make use of a plastic spatula for folding it in. Add vanilla and fold the mixture again.

AVIANO AIR BASE, ITALY — Pulling 5 G’s is just a normal part of Airman 1st Class Kelly Curtis’s day. Racing headfirst down icy slopes reaching upwards of 80 mph Curtis is a member of the USA Skeleton team headed to the 2022 Winter Olympics to compete in Beijing. Curtis, U.S. Air Force world class athlete, has been performing Skeleton for 7 seasons and competing for 5. Curtis says her favorite part is getting to include family and friends who have been supportive of her endeavor for years. “The monotony of the day in/ day out grind with just my teammates might be starting to pay off,” said Curtis. “Now my family and friends can see what it is I actually do in a high quality broadcast.” Curtis started out as a heptathelete, a combination of 7 different track and field events.
“During driving school I saw and slid Skeleton for the first time and was intrigued right away,” said Curtis. “After completing graduate school, I joined the USA Bobsled team for a season before switching to Skeleton full time.” Curtis recently found out the years of hard work paid off when she received the news that she made the Olympic team. “I couldn’t believe it, I was such a long shot with this being my rookie season on the World Cup level and competing on all foreign tracks, some for my first time,” said Curtis. “I knew everything had to go right in my final race to qualify me, it’s still surreal that it did.” The World Cup usually consists of 8 races spread out between North America and Europe but was limited to solely Europe this season. “I had to win the final race to be named to my first World Cup team and was able to deliver on the day,” said Curtis.

(AFNS) — Five aircraft representing the Air Force’s 75 years as a service will conduct a first-of-its-kind flyover during the national anthem performance at Super Bowl LVI, Feb. 13, over SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The Air Force Heritage Flight represents the service’s ability to innovate, accelerate and thrive since its evolution from the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1947. The Heritage Flight flyover will feature: • P-51 Mustang from the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation, Chino, California • A-10 Thunderbolt from DavisMonthan Air Force Base, Arizona • F-16 Fighting Falcon from Shaw AFB, South Carolina • F-22 Raptor from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia • F-35 Lightning from Hill AFB, Utah There will be a live pre-game stream from the formation while they get into position in the sky and will include special interviews and segments. Viewers can tune in to the Air Force Facebook page at 6 p.m. ET for the broadcast. The U.S. Air Force performs close to 1,000 flyovers a year, which serve as a way to showcase the capabilities of its aircraft while also inspiring patriotism and future generations of aviation enthusiasts. These flyovers are done at no additional cost to the taxpayer and serve as time-over-target training for Air Force pilots, aircrew and ground control teams.

The IMCOM Be Strong program awarded the garrison’s Army Community Service and Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation a $50,000 grant to acclimate new Soldiers and family members to German culture. “We want to make the transition to Germany easier for our new community members,” said Heather Robinson, chief of ACS. “Many times people are intimidated by the language and cultural differences. This incentive program is a way for us to quickly introduce the population to Germany with guides who understand both country’s cultures.” The Be Strong program is available to Soldiers, Army civilians and their family members from units within the Rheinland-Pfalz garrison footprint. “We have designated programs from ACS, MWR and Outdoor Recreation that introduce new community members to the German culture,” said Robinson. “This quick immersion should help increase unit and family cohesion
and reduce the amount of early return of dependents.” Be Strong is designed to reduce stress, anxiety and depression associated with moving to a new country through rapid acclimation. The new program includes courses and orientations that familiarize new community members to the economy and garrison programs and facilities. “To receive the vouchers for the Be Strong Excursion, participants must complete specific classes and orientation while a free Be Strong city trip is earned through the completion of a Be Strong passport,” said Robinson.
