1 ACOS brings life to BlackNet

Courtesy story 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron recently achieved a major milestone for their multitheater, all-network transport system, BlackNet, when it received its official Authority to Operate accreditation in July 2022.

BlackNet combines any method of communication like satellite, cell coverage, fiber optic or ethernet to create a meshed network and ensure users stay connected.

Black networks are not new, but for USAFE-AFAFRICA, the speed to execute, proliferation over two continents, savings in circuit costs, equipment and manning, reliability and now the Authority to Operate, make the 1st ACOS BlackNet mission essential.

“The 1st ACOS’s BlackNet provides mass, maneuver, and assured communications, empowering warfighters access to critical information at the speed of need,” said Col. John J. Riester, 435th Air and Space Communications Group commander.

COMMENTARY: The 786 FSS is ATLAS STRONG!

by Lt. Col. Matthew McWhirter 786th Force Support Squadron The amazing team that makes up the 786th Force Support Squadron is comprised of members from so many backgrounds. We have a full complement of active and reserve military service members, appropriated fund civilians, non-appropriated fund civilians and local nationals. It is with this awesome set of diversity that we bring joy to our genuine community to further our nation’s strategic military objectives through building partnership and projecting airpower. Moreover, we are part of the mighty ATLAS team within the 86th Mission Support Group as we bring combat support capabilities to the greater Kaiserslautern Military Community as well as numerous geographically separated units across Europe and Africa.

The last eighteen months that I have been in command have been nothing short of amazing. We have such professional and driven teammates that bring joy through service every day. Through the positive patron experiences, and those that we have an opportunity to learn from, we continue to rise to the challenge. Said another way, we are ATLAS STRONG!

– Airmen are our Family: Have you met Airman Clifton Dobbs, 786th FSS food service specialist? You would sure know it if you had. He always has a smile on his face, and it certainly is contagious! He is also a part of the team that brings our community an amazing meal at the newly renovated Rheinland Inn Dining Facility. Additionally, did you know that your Dining Facility teams served over 135,000 meals in 2022? And that is with the main facility reopening in July 2022!

– Team of Teams: As the Air Force’s second largest lodging operation, and the winners of the 2022 Air Force level Innkeeper Award, we supported an average of 1,100 personnel a day while also providing agile bed space management to enable two Ukraine Defense Contact Groups for the Secretary of Defense as well as a surge of forces supporting the Ukrainian crisis.

– Leaders at every level: For those that think you need to have a certain rank to lead, think again. Senior Airman Kaci Martin, 786th FSS financial operations technician, certainly did not wait. She hit the ground running as a part of the 786th FSS Detachment 1 Finance Team located at Stuttgart. In addition to assisting her team process finance actions for the 1,200 Airmen and Guardians spread across 70 locations in 44 countries, she came to the aid of a fellow mother that was going through a challenging time. Thanks to her efforts, the mother and children are doing much better now.

– Accountable/Action Oriented: We had two young teammates realize our squadron video needed updating, so Airman 1st Class Melissa Lopez and Airman 1st Class Regan Flatt, both 786th FSS military postal clerks, took basic intent from their leadership team and ran with it. We now have a legit hype video to show newcomers how interconnected they are and how they can positively affect each other.

– Share our Story: We love to celebrate success at every level! This year alone, we were blessed to award multiple Airmen with Below the Zone stripes, earn a Stripes for Exceptional Performers (STEP) promotion to Technical Sergeant, and have two Chief Master Sergeant selects: Senior Master Sgt. Victoria Thornton, 786th FSS acting squadron senior enlisted leader, and Senior Master Sgt. Andrea Sierra, 786th FSS force development flight chief.

Finally, we held a competition to choose our new mascot. Through multiple challenging rounds, the Phoenix won out! The Phoenix is known for its renewal, rebirth and protective characteristics. We are honored and humbled to serve alongside Team Ramstein as we continue to help project Airpower and build partnership.

BLACKNET from Page 1 Necessity is the mother of invention, and BlackNet is no exception. One of 1st ACOS’s most important missions is to securely transport Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance actionable data across Europe and Africa. To accomplish that mission, the 1st ACOS faced a challenge common for many service providers: The ability to establish a dedicated, resilient connection, especially outside of the continental United States.

As the 1st ACOS worked through this challenge, they realized that the COM industry’s “colorless core” might be a solution. The unit’s network engineers set out on a mission to integrate colorless core, and the notion of BlackNet was born. While brainstorming the building blocks of BlackNet, it became apparent to engineers that it would need to be a team sport.

They contacted colleagues at the Defense Information Systems Agency, nearby Air Force communications squadrons, and satellite ground stations — all stakeholders in the mission to deliver mission critical ISR data.

The system came together in a way that is best summarized in a quote from its Chief Engineer, Mr. Billy Nix: “BlackNet is special because it can lay on top of any method of transport, whether SATCOM, LTE, COM internet, and even other DOD networks. It can be accessed as one specific transport network across Europe and Africa and deliver any service we want to connect to Ramstein Air Base.” Essentially, the 1st ACOS can deploy a BlackNet team with any method of transport to anywhere in Europe or Africa and deliver any enclave or service the warfighter would have access to.

BlackNet is engineered to be flexible and meet mission needs. It doesn’t matter if a team is out in the field with only cell data, military or COM satellite, Wi-Fi or a dedicated circuit; with a BlackNet router, they can deliver services.

Even emerging technologies like SpaceX’s Starlink have been tested and used with BlackNet to deliver operational services to military warfighters in Europe.

“Deploying to install BlackNet has been simplified to just plug and play,” said Airman 1st Class Joshua Cummins, 1st ACOS infrastructure technician. “The configurations are made in the work center and quality checked before deploying. Airmen going [on

temporary duty assignment] will coordinate with on-site personnel and with DISA for circuit extensions prior to installation.”

For some readers, BlackNet might sound familiar to another project being championed by the Air Force Air Battle Management System Digital Infrastructure or Integrated Warfighter Network.

The intent of the Digital Infrastructure is to deliver a similar architecture which enables acquisition of interoperable systems that provide a network fabric across the globe, while facilitating mass, maneuver and denying adversary freedom of action in cyberspace.

“We started BlackNet based on

a need to quickly provide ISR data to our most forward-based warfighters,” said Lt. Col. Phil Alvarez, 1st ACOS commander.

“What we found through the process is BlackNet is a gamechanger and epitomizes the Chief of Staff of the Air Force’s call to accelerate, change or lose. Our BlackNet has been in development for almost 10 years; its resilient, redundant, meshed capabilities survive in a disconnected

environment and provide the flexibility and speed to meet both Agile Combat Employment and Joint All-Domain Command and Control concepts of operations.

We believe our partners at the Air Force level will be successful in delivering the Digital Infrastructure and BlackNet will be the initial technology that paves that path. When ubiquitous transport and services are available across the globe to U.S. DOD warfighters at the speed of need, we will look back and know BlackNet originally employed in Europe and Africa is what got us there.”

BlackNet has proven integral in delivering services for operations and exercises across Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia, as well as providing support for mobile, on the move communications. For example, BlackNet provided coalition networks across Europe for NATO’s integrated air and missile defense exercise, Astral Knight.

Additionally, it was used to test Top Secret network connectivity in exercise Heavy Rain, where it successfully functioned in extremely difficult electromagnetic spectrum environments.

“BlackNet doesn’t support operations, it enables them,” Riester said. “The innovation 1st ACOS and BlackNet provide have transformed how we fight, not just for USAFE-AFAFRICA, but for the Air Force. We look forward to supporting our allies, and exponentially improving our warfighting communications, anytime, anywhere.”

Multi-wing event recognizes Ukraine support

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz employees at Panzer Kaserne continue to employ creative ways to re-use/repurpose materials, saving money and improving relationships within the community. The Records Staging Area Team at Panzer Kaserne partners with the Defense Commissary Agency Europe, Central Distribution Center Germersheim to repurpose and re-use over 900 pallets, saving approximately 27,000 euros. U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz is the Army’s premier Strategic Readiness Platform overseas in delivering unmatched mobilization and installation support services to enable readiness for a globally responsive Army and providing a safe home for our Total Force community and families.

The same team that partnered with a local company this summer to recycle over 15 tons of expired paper documents identified yet another way to save money and

contribute to the “Ready Garrison” efforts on becoming a greener garrison, this time with the re-use of wooden pallets.

Pallets are known as the workhorses or unsung heroes of the logistics supply chain, carrying heavy cargo, and making it easier

to load and store goods in shipping containers and warehouses using pallet jacks or cargo forklifts. But, like everything else, pallets are not “free” — exporters need to supply them, and the importer/receiver of the goods must dispose of them, all of which have associated costs.

After the summer purge of paper, The Records Staging Area team were left with nearly a thousand untreated European wooden pallets which, instead of “throwing them away” were sent to the Defense Commissary Agency, Europe Central Distribution Center Germersheim. Each of these pallets were repurposed back into the Army inventory system for a total cost savings of over 27,000 euros!

The garrison’s Chief of Administration Services Brian Raymond oversees the RSA and along with the RSA team, spearheaded the paper recycling mission this summer.

“After the success of the no-cost to government shredding mission, we had all these leftover pallets that we knew could benefit several agencies in the area. We called CDC-G, asked if they could use them and they said yes. So, The RSA Team got to work loading up the pallets to deliver to the CDC-G,” said Raymond.

The warehouse personnel, who run the RSA day-to-day operations were happy to find a new home for the pallets.

“We had these pallets here a long time and knew that we should not just destroy them, so,

when we heard that we found someone that could re-utilize them, we all jumped in, rolled up our sleeves and got them loaded properly for the 1.5-hour trucktrailer shipment to Germersheim,” said Andreas Kuehn, Records Management Technician, Local National Lead.

Kathrin Magin, the Supervisory Operations Support Specialist for the CDC-G oversaw the process for receiving the pallets. According to her, “The donation of the pallets, which were in excellent condition, not only saved Garrison RheinlandPfalz the disposal costs, but were also a great cost savings for DeCA, who provides semi-perishable products to all the Commissaries in the European Theater.”

Douglas Nomura, Distribution Facilities Manager, DeCA CDC Germersheim, said, “These small wins resulting from the collaboration between the two organizations are a direct benefit to the warfighter, our DeCA patrons, and our local communities.”

Between the two missions, over 75,000 euros (approximately $80,000 USD) was saved!

“Identifying and executing smart, cost-effective solutions like these are a testament to the commitment of our garrison team members to improve systems and maximize resources while promoting interagency partnerships,” said Garrison Commander Col. Reid E. Furman. “Our leaders are committed to cultivating a culture of operational excellence across the garrison.”

Donations build partnership capacity with FAN ACM

“The donation drive was accomplished by private groups and Ramstein Middle School, who wanted to provide items to local nationals in an area of the 435th Expeditionary Wing’s responsibility,” said Capt. Cliff Kim, 724th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron chaplain.

The donation drive initiative began when Laura Yost, a teacher at Ramstein Middle School, contacted Maj. Lane Campbell, 435th Air Expeditionary Wing chaplain, about organizing donation collection boxes.

“Our [National Junior Honor Society] decided upon a donation

drive as our December service project,” said Yost. “NJHS is centered around self-motivated and hardworking students who consider the needs of others. The purpose of NJHS is to develop scholars and leaders that serve the school and community. Our NJHS members felt that this donation drive was a great way to serve the purpose of NJHS and give back to those that are in need. This was a wonderful experience for our students to see how a small group of middle schoolers can make a large impact in the world.”

Once Campbell and the middle school began working out the details, he looped in other groups from the Wing, such as a spouses group.

“AB 201 was chosen due to the partnership between the FAN ACM and the 443 Civil Affairs Battalion,” said Lt. Col. John Barrett, 724th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron commander.

to local villages, women’s organizations, and orphanages within Agadez and the surrounding area.

Having the FAN ACM deliver the donations accomplishes one of AB 201’s missions, which is to build partner capacity.

“The partnership between CA and the FAN ACM is a major force enabler at AB 201,” said Barrett.

“The catalyst is that AB 201’s integrated relationship with the CA Team made this happen.”

Capt. Michael Kelly, 443 CAB commander, agreed. “Our good relationships between the 435 AEW, 409 Air Expeditionary Group, 724 EABS, and FAN allow us to support an activity like this and to be a good partner to the government of Niger and a good neighbor to the Agadez community.”

Once it was worked out that AB 201 was a viable location for the donations, Campbell worked with the soldiers from the 443 CAB to determine what types of items would serve the local community best.

than 50 boxes of children’s clothes, toys, soccer balls, chalk, notebooks, and gardening supplies, were collected via a junior high school honor society at Ramstein AB. Once the boxes arrived at AB 201, soldiers from the 443 CAB and AB 201 chaplains sorted the items, to include sorting the clothes based on size and gender.

The donations will be distributed to more than 10 villages over multiple days throughout the months of January and February.

This was a volunteer effort to collect in-kind donations for an unofficial activity that is not related to any official business of the United States Air Force or Ramstein Air Base.

First in, last out: 1CBCS debuts USAFE’s first certified fieldcraft hostile course

Peter Thompson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The sound of gunfire erupts, dampening the melodic symphony of afternoon drizzle and forcing a group of Airmen to retreat to the wooded safety of the surrounding forest. The roar of a HUMVEE engine can be heard as it crests the top of the hill. In the ensuing chaos, everyone is focused on the task at hand, finding their next waypoint and collecting the exfiltration coordinates before being captured.

If this sounds like a combat scenario to you, the 1st Combat Communications Squadron cadre have succeeded in their mission.

Thankfully this isn’t war, and nobody is in real danger. The guns are shooting blanks and the price of capture is starting that segment of the land navigation course over.

“We really wanted to make our land navigation something different than what anyone else was doing,” said Staff Sgt. Ryley Carlsen, 1st Combat Communications Squadron expeditionary training supervisor and combat readiness school instructor. “People tend to learn more when they’re having fun.”

His sentiment rings true in the faces of his 20 students. Although they are wet, cold and exhausted, it is evident that they are enjoying the training.

“I never knew how to navigate land prior to this training,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Gabriel Salvador, 1st CBCS tactical client systems technician. “We were taught how to find our location on a map without a GPS, it was very useful.”

There are still three more days of U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s only field craft-hostile course, the 1st CBCS Combat Readiness School.

As part of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, the 1st CBCS’s mission is to rapidly provide deployable communications and air traffic control services throughout Europe and Africa.

This course is the culmination of 22 months of work to receive Air Education and Training Command’s certification, 207 checklist items and 14 lesson plans that had to be seamlessly integrated and executed in a 10-day course.

“This capability does not exist anywhere else inside USAFE, and we are extremely proud of what we’ve created,” said Staff Sgt. Devin Mitchell, 1st CBCS cadre and master combatives instructor. “This week is special because AETC is here validating our course,” Mitchell continued. “Now we will start getting students from across the command and the Air Force.”

“We need to be ready to deploy anywhere in support of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa missions within 72 hours,” said Tech.

Sgt. Rex Longwell, 1st CBCS expeditionary training noncommissioned officer in charge and course facilitator. “Unfortunately, we don’t have the time or resources to send Airmen stateside for training. We needed a combat ready training solution in-house. So we built one.”

The next three days are cold and long, with temperatures hovering just above freezing. After a crawl, walk, run approach to train-

ing, students are ready to run as they face their final test during the capstone exercise. Everything they have spent nine days learning is thrown at them and they must respond appropriately.

During one scenario their convoy encounters unexploded ordinance and a wounded service member. As they provide medical care, they are ambushed and must reposition themselves and their vehicles to return fire while performing care under fire. After defeating the opposing forces, they quickly transition to tactical field care and form a plan to request evacuation. A 9-line request is

called in and the team moves the casualty to a nearby landing zone before cadre call ENDEX. “It was so intense,” said Salvador. “We had to defend ourselves from an unknown number of combatants while simultaneously recovering a wounded soldier.”

With their mission accomplished, students and cadre retreat to the safety of their cots for one last evening together before trading them in for comfortable beds.

You can sense the bond students have formed as they joke and share experiences from the last few days.

The cadre look proud and relieved.

They are ready to celebrate their inclusion as the fifth course certified to teach field craft skills in the U.S. Air Force.

The 1 CBCS motto is “First In, Last Out.” The 20 students who attended the 1st CBCS Combat Readiness School now have the skills needed to live up to that expectation in any environment.

“It is difficult to articulate the totality of the work that went into making this course a reality,” said Master Sergeant Ryan Unger, 1st CBCS expeditionary training section chief. “The tireless efforts of our talented, innovative Airmen have culminated in another ’first’ for the 1st CBCS. Preparing Airmen for combat is priority one at 1 CBCS and I could not be prouder of this team.”

Austin encourages black engineers to mentor youths

by David Vergun Department of Defense News On Aug. 30, 1983, the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off from Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

Aboard that mission was Air Force Col. Guion Bluford Jr., the first African American to fly in space, said Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III in a speech at the Black Engineer of the Year Awards STEM Conference yesterday in National Harbor, Maryland.

Bluford became a NASA astronaut in August 1979. His technical assignments included working with space station operations, the remote manipulator system, spacelab systems and experiments, space shuttle systems, payload safety issues and verifying flight software in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory and in the Flight Systems Laboratory. A veteran of four space flights, he was a mission specialist on Space Transport System-8, STS 61-A, STS39 and STS-53.

Bluford logged a total of 688 hours in space. He retired from the Air Force as a colonel in 1993 and left NASA the same year.

A few years after his historic 1983 mission, Bluford was named Black Engineer of the Year, the secretary said.

“Although he soared through the heavens, he always remained down to earth. And he once said, ’I felt I had to do the best job I could for people like the Tuskegee Airmen, who paved the way for me,’” Austin said, referring to the African American fighter and bomber pilots and crew members who formed the

332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group (Medium) of the U.S. Army Air Forces. The Tuskegee Airmen had an impressive combat record in World War II. “By breaking barriers for Black airmen during World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen propelled Col. Bluford higher. He stood on their shoulders. And today, young pilots and astronauts stand on his, Austin said, encouraging the engineer attendees to mentor young people and thus support America’s future.

The secretary noted that over the past 37 years, recipients of the Black Engineer of the Year Awards have been electrical engineers, pilots, astronauts and physicists.

“They’ve made huge breakthroughs. They’ve broken down barriers. And they’ve been driven to serve, to make the world better, and to lift up the next generation,” he said. “You know, that commitment to service has always been crucial for solving our toughest problems and for defending our country.”

Austin said Defense Department scientists and engineers, along with partners in academia and industry, have always pioneered critical innovations to defend America. They’ve operated satellites that enable global navigation, developed vaccines that save lives, laid the foundations of the internet — and the list goes on.

Just last month, DOD officials announced the creation of its newest university-affiliated research center at Howard University — the

first ever established at a historically Black university, he said.

Austin said this initiative brings a consortium of nine historically Black colleges and universities under Howard’s leadership to research technical autonomy and develop innovative ways to aid warfighters.

“We’re determined to continue innovating to make America more secure. And that means drawing on the strengths of all people,” he said.

Army’s first female deep-sea diver reflects on career Story and photo by Terrance Bell for Army.mil Andrea Motley Crabtree’s career can be lauded as a ground-breaking triumph.

Or, it could be noted as a tragic tale of lingering misery, a grim reminder such achievements often come with human tolls.

Crabtree is the Army’s first female deep-sea diver and the first African American female deep-sea diver in any branch of service.

The retired Army master sergeant was the guest speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. observance Jan. 19 at the Lee Theater. She spoke in front of a few hundred people, including CASCOM and Fort Lee commanding general Maj. Gen. Mark T. Simerly, whom she has known 30 years.

During the speech, the 64-year-old laid bare her fight to pursue what she loved, the forces that undermined her ambitions and the deep, invisible wounds she suffered as a result.

Crabtree said she knew the journey to earning the Army Diver Badge would be fraught with difficulty — a classmate said she “belonged in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant” — but even she could not anticipate the malevolence exhibited by some classmates because she was black and female.

“I expected to go through a lot of hazing when I went through dive school and I did,” she recalled, “and I actually agree with the process. Once that diver badge is pinned on, any diver that sees that pin knows exactly what I went through and what I’m capable of, and I knew the same of them … If they were wearing that pin, I knew they knew what they were doing. That should have been enough.

That should tell it all. For me, it never stopped. I had to prove myself over and over and over again every day.”

The Westchester, N.Y., native was the only Black person and the only woman among eight Soldiers and more than 20 others on day one of her 1982 class at the U.S. Navy Deep Sea Diving and Salvage School at Panama Beach, Florida. The three-month program of instruction awarded the Corps of Engineers’ military occupational specialty 00B to Soldiers, who go on to use their training to support underwater maintenance and construction projects amongst other missions.

To graduate, students were required to pass a health and fitness assessment that disqualified many. Other course challenges included requirements to rise from a seated position wearing the 198-pound Mark V deep sea dive suit, walking to a ladder, descending into the water and climbing back up. In the end, Crabtree was one of only two Soldiers and nine Sailors to earn the

Although Crabtree had accomplished what no female Soldier had in the predominately white, male career field, there would be no confetti drop.

It became clear from her first assignment at Fort Belvoir.

“There were only about 39 divers total in the Unites States Army diving field at that time — all male — and the majority of them were not thrilled to have me,” she said.

Soldiers’ expressions of disapproval included pranks such as turning Crabtree’s air off underwater; placing a dead snake in the freezer; walking around naked following physical training; and “assigning me with what they thought were impossible tasks to complete,” she said.

Nevertheless, Crabtree dove headfirst into her duties because the rewards were much greater than the efforts to stop her.

“For the most part, I could put up with it because I was a diver, I was diving, I was doing what I loved and I was learning,” said the Soldier of 21 years and mother of three adult sons. “I was learning to become a better diver. I loved what I was doing.”

Seeing she might rankle the dive community’s elitist culture, Crabtree said she was shipped off to South Korea after about eight months at Fort Belvoir. There loomed one Sgt. 1st Class James P. “Frenchy” Leveille, a renowned master diver who had enough juice to squeeze Crabtree out of the career field. He introduced himself to her via a boisterous, blustering tirade on who was in charge and how things would be run.

“He told me I was no different than any other diver, and if I couldn’t pull my weight, he’d be getting rid of me,” Crabtree recalled. “He went on and on and on and on.”

Leveille defied what many thought was his role in pushing Crabtree out of the career field, she said. Instead, he turned out to be no more or less than a hard-but-fair Soldier who took care of his troops no matter what and who was ready to challenge anyone questioning his leadership.

“He told all the divers that he would decide who dove, when they dove and who they would dive with, and anybody who wouldn’t dive with me wouldn’t dive at all and would be taken off of dive duty,” she added.

Leveille, now 75, said he staked his career on fairness and was not ignorant to Crabtree’s circumstance.

“As far as I was concerned, she was going to get the same treatment and same opportunity as everybody else,” said retired the sergeant major, “and she did very well for herself. She was a good diver, and she was a good Soldier.

That’s the way I rated her.”

Leveille’s directive to his troops was clear — he called the shots and nothing was going to happen to Crabtree or anyone else unless he approved. He stood firm on what was right in the face of tense dissent, and the troops eventually fell in line, said Crabtree.

“It was only due to the respect they had for him, that they did as they were told,” she said. “Command climate is everything. It trickles down. No one was going to go against Frenchy.”

Crabtree, who remains friends with Leveille, said she grew under his leadership, learning more about diving than in dive school. Her proficiency eventually became a threat to earning diving’s most coveted honor. In the eyes of diving’s leadership at the time, it was one thing to be a female diver, but it was downright blasphemous for one to sport the Master Diver Badge, said Crabtree.

“I’m not trying to be conceited,”

she said, “but I was a good diver. And the senior leadership knew it. They knew if I was allowed to continue, I would’ve made master diver. And they would be damned if that was going to happen on their watch.”

Crabtree at some point concluded leaders bet against her becoming a diver in the first place. When she questioned why she was accommodated prior to training and not so much during the course and afterward, one officer concluded, “We didn’t think you’d make it.”

Crabtree withstood powerful gales of hostility in doing so, but destructive storms were brewing on the horizon. Her orders for advanced schooling in California following the Korea assignment were cancelled; her 300point Army Physical Fitness Tests were rescored as a male’s; and she later received notice her MOS would be closed to women due to changes in policy.

Deciding some of the actions directed against her were discriminatory, Crabtree filed complaints with her chain of command, the post inspector general, the specialized training branch sergeant major and the Department of the Army inspector general.

“They all wouldn’t help me,” she recalled. “They all said there was nothing they could do. I told my command they had won and requested to be relieved from dive duty. I’ve been angry every day since then.”

That was 1985. Crabtree finished out her career as a signal Soldier. Over the course of leaving dive duty, her indignation has grown into debilitating discontent, consuming every corner of her consciousness.

“That anger has taken its toll on every aspect of my life — on my marriage, my children. It’s affected my

finances and, most of all, it’s affected my mental health,” she said.

Crabtree, who was accompanied by her service dog Buddy during the speech, said she could accept people resisting her for breaking new ground but has had difficulty reconciling why she was ill-treated.

“It didn’t bother me when I was the only woman; it didn’t bother me when I was the only Black,” she said. “What bothered me was the way they treated me because I am a Black woman.

“I know what it feels like to be hated because I’m a woman,” continued Crabtree, “and I know what it feels like to be hated because of my race. Yes, I’m sure a lot has changed for the good in the last 25 years, but many of the same issues are still hanging around as well as plenty of new issues that are not being addressed properly …”

Crabtree said a strong, values-driven command climate is a potent antidote for building foundations that are supportive of Soldiers.

“Soldiers will follow without question the leaders who take care of them,” she said to the audience. “Be a good leader. Take care of your Soldiers, and they will take care of you.”

Now living in the Augusta, Georgia area, Crabtree said she has spent considerable time trying to heal as a result of what she experienced in the Army. Engagements such as the Fort Lee MLK event at which she spoke have helped.

After the speech, Crabtree spoke with Soldiers and many were thankful she shared her story. One interaction with an officer was notable and even haunting because it proved to be powerfully restorative, if only in a small way.

“I get a little choked up when I think about it,” said Crabtree later of her exchange with a senior Soldier who had no hand in her ordeal. “He handed me a coin, took off his Sapper Badge (Tab) and apologized for the engineers. He’s an engineer officer.

It’s the first apology I received from anybody associated with the Engineer Corps or the military. It’s really had an effect on me.”

The effect of offering glimmers of hope in an otherwise tragic tale of lingering misery.

Editor’s note: In the U.S. Army today, males and females can sign up for the dive MOS — re-designated 12D — as well as many others that were only open to males when Crabtree enlisted. They include those in infantry, armor, field artillery and special forces.

The U.S. Army also has initiated numerous efforts to ensure all Soldiers are treated with dignity and respect.

by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz During Black History Month, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz joins the U.S. Army and our nation in remembering and celebrating the achievements and contributions of thousands of Black Americans.

The month of February was officially designated as Black History Month by President Gerald Ford in 1976. Ever since, the United States and other countries have dedicated a month to celebrating Black history.

“Freedom and the recognition of individual rights are what our Revolution was all about,” states Ford’s original proclamation.

“They were ideals that inspired our fight for Independence: ideals that we have been striving to live up to ever since.”

The Army story cannot be told without reflecting on the courage, strength and legacy of Black Americans who helped shape the world we live in today. Black Americans have served and sacrificed in every conflict in our nation’s history, with more than 245 years of honorable service.

Born in Kitrell, North Carolina, on Dec. 5, 1918, Earley was raised by her father, a minister, and her mother, a former teacher. Very intellectually gifted, she passed the test for early advancement to high school once she completed elementary school. However, her

parents did not let her since she was already a few years ahead of her classmates.

Earley later graduated as valedictorian from Booker T. Washington High School and attended Wilberforce University of Ohio, one of the best African American universities at the time, thanks to a scholarship she received for graduating top of her class in high school.

She became very active in school groups, participating in the university’s branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Women’s SelfGovernment Association and the Greek sorority, Delta Sigma Theta.

Earley graduated from Wilberforce University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1938, with majors in Latin, physics and mathematics. She minored in history, while also taking classes in education so that she could start teaching after graduation.

From 1938 to 1942, she taught math and science at a junior high school in South Carolina, and took summer graduate courses at Ohio State University (OSU) pursuing a major in vocational psychology.

As the United States joined World War II, an expansion of the U.S. military became necessary. The Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, later known as Women’s

Army Corps (WAC), was created, and Earley applied to and was accepted in the organization in 1942.

She became a member of the first officer candidate school and was commissioned in August 1942 at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, where she stayed until 1944 and worked as a staff training officer, a station control officer and a company commander.

In 1943, she was promoted to major, and by the end of 1944, she became the commanding officer of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. Nicknamed the “Six Triple Eight,” the battalion was the first unit of WAC African Americans to go overseas. Her battalion’s first mission in Birmingham, England, was to organize and distribute undelivered mail to U.S. service members.

The battalion started working around the clock in three shifts, seven days a week, clearing all the backlogged mail from the previous six months in only three months.

Earley’s battalion later moved to the postal facilities of Rouen, France, where once again, they were tasked with organizing mail that had gone undelivered, up to 65,000 pieces of mail per day.

By the end of WWII, the 6888th CPDB had cleared over 17 million pieces of backlogged

mail, ensuring the troops stayed in touch with their loved ones back home. This played a huge role in boosting morale.

Earley was promoted to lieutenant colonel in December 1945 for her amazing work in the WAC – the highest possible rank for a Soldier in the WAC. In March 1946, she requested to be discharged from active duty and was presented by the National Council of Negro Women Inc. with a scroll of honor for distinguished service to the military.

The same year, Earley completed her Master of Arts at OSU and started working at the Veterans Administration in Cleveland, Ohio, as a registration officer.

She married Stanley A. Earley Jr. in 1949 and moved with him to Zurich, Switzerland, where she attended the Minerva Institute to master the German language.

Later, Earley attended courses at the University of Zurich.

Upon her return to the United States in 1952, she devoted the rest of her life to activism and education, serving as a dean at Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State College (now Tennessee State University), Georgia State University and many other organization boards.

In 1982, she founded the Black Leadership Development Program (BLDP) in Dayton, Ohio, to help educate and train Black Americans to be leaders in their communities.

Earley died in 2002 at the age of 83 in Dayton. Her name was recently selected by the Army as part of the Naming Commission recommendations, as part of the Army’s effort to rename installations previously named after Confederate officers.

Many organizations, to include the National Postal Museum, the National Women’s History Museum, Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame, the Smithsonian Institute and the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame, have recognized her contributions and dedication to promote opportunities for Black Americans.

Want to avoid getting sick?

Here are some tips to boost your immunity

by Claudia Sanchez-Bustamante Medical Health System Communications In the same way that wearing personal protective equipment like gloves, goggles, and masks can minimize your exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses, personal protective nutrition and lifestyle practices can do the same to boost your immunity.

This is especially relevant this season, when a “tripledemic” collision of respiratory syncytial virus — known as RSV, the flu, and COVID-19 – are affecting the population and overwhelming hospitals across the United States.

“Personal protective nutrition and personal protective lifestyle are evidence-based strategies to boost

your immune response to reduce the risk of severe illness associated with COVID-19 and other infectious diseases,” said U.S. Air Force Col. (Dr.) Mary Anne Kiel, chair of the Air Force Medical Readiness Agency’s Lifestyle and Performance Medicine Working Group. “They are additional measures that we can take to improve our resilience and optimize military readiness and performance.”

PPN includes optimizing your nutrition by eating mostly unprocessed foods from plant sources, she explained. This means drinking enough water to stay hydrated and aiming to get most vitamins and essential nutrients from whole food sources, thus being selective about which types of supplements to take.

“PPL includes getting seven-tonine nightly hours of restorative sleep, learning tools to manage stress, staying physically active every day, maintaining positive social connections, spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, and avoiding risky substances like tobacco and alcohol,” added Kiel.

Taste the Rainbow “Eating a healthy diet is one of the most profound ways that we can have a positive impact on our health and well-being, including our immune system,” said Kiel.

Considering that “eating is something we typically do two-tosix times per day, being selective about the types of foods we fuel our body with can significantly boost our ability to fend off and fight infections when our immune system encounters them,” said Kiel.

Consuming a wide variety of types and colors of fruits and vegetables helps us maximize the nutrients our immune system has to build a protective response, including phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

“It gives our immune system the best building blocks to create a defense against infections and other non-infectious chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and others,” said the expert.

Personal Protective Nutrition Eat a well-balanced diet to optimize your immunity: Drink plenty of water. Divide your body weight (in pounds) by two, and aim to drink that many ounces of water a day.

Build a power plate. Fill your plate with 50% veggies, 25% whole grains, and 25% lean protein. Visit MyPlate. gov to learn more.

Eat high-fiber and protein.

Consume a variety of veggies, legumes (beans and peas), grains, and fruits for fullness. Try plant-based proteins too.

Go anti-inflammatory. Use fresh herbs and spices, eat healthy fats (olive, sunflower, or avocado oils), avoid foods with added sugar, and minimize fried or processed foods.

Eat the rainbow. Foods rich in color have high amounts of antioxidants, so eat your berries, greens, and other colorful foods.

Protect your gut. Eat grains (brown rice, couscous, or quinoa), veggies, and fermented foods (yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut) for better digestion.

Get the scoop on supplements. Ask your healthcare provide about supplement such as vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, and omega-3.

What the research shows There is ample research to support the benefits of a healthy diet in warding off disease.

For example, studies show that about 70%-80% of our immunity resides within the cells of our gastrointestinal tract, said Kiel.

Given that the foods we eat “impact the composition of the bacteria and fungi living within our gastrointestinal tract,” this is key for our immune health.

The American Gut Study “found that people who included more than 30 different types of plant foods in their diets each week—including fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds—had a much more diverse microbiome in their intestinal tract,” she said.

Specifically regarding COVID19, a study the National Institutes of Health published in 2021 concluded that a high-quality diet consisting primarily of healthy plant-based foods, was associated with decreased risk and severity of COVID-19.

Another 2021 NIH study found that the micronutrients consumed in a diet that contains a diversity of plants play important roles in supporting the response to COVID-19 vaccination.

And a study published in the nutrition journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, “showed that people who self-reported following plant-based diets and pescatarian diets [meaning they consume fish but no other meats] had significantly lower odds of experiencing moderate-

Effects of processed foods Processed foods — food that is altered from its natural state — can negatively affect our health and ability to prevent infection, explained Kiel.

These processes refer to any alteration in the way a food is cooked or packaged, including adding preservatives, flavors, nutrients, salts, sugars, or fats.

“By their nature, processed foods often have significantly less fiber and much more salt, oil, sugar, and fat compared to whole foods,” said Kiel.

Yet also, “highly processed foods such as microwave meals, bagged snacks, sweets, processed meats, and sweetened beverages all increase inflammation and are best avoided,” said U.S. Air Force Col. (Dr.) Sarah Vick, a family and preventive medicine physician at the Defense Health Agency’s Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division.

“Everything from runny noses to fevers to body aches can be traced to the immune system’s inflammatory response,” she added.

As a result, consuming processed foods causes the body to absorb fewer whole nutrients, potentially triggering “inflammatory responses and disease associations such as autoimmune diseases and perhaps other chronic inflammatory diseases and metabolic disorders,” said Kiel.

Not just food Consuming a healthy diet is important but it’s just one tool to boost your health and immunity.

Living a stressful life without enough rest, activity, or healthy social connections can also be detrimental to your health.

“Just as eating a variety of plants and engaging in moderate exercise can decrease inflammation and susceptibility to infections, a poor diet,

poor sleep, and being sedentary can increase inflammation and susceptibility to infections,” added Vick.

And even though stress is unavoidable, “learning how to respond to stress in a healthy and positive way can be the difference in our ability to thrive and maintain resilience in challenging situations,” said Kiel.

Tools for responding to stressful situations include prioritizing self-care article and making time to laugh, says the wellness expert.

It “can help us destress and improve performance, in addition to strengthening our immune system.”

For example, “engaging in selfcare activities helps reduce cortisol [our stress hormone] and boosts other positive hormones such as dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins to reduce inflammation in our bodies, promote a strong immune system, and reduce our risk of developing chronic disease,” she added.

These hormones have key roles: Dopamine is the body’s the feel-good hormone, serotonin regulates our moods and other functions, oxytocin plays a role in social bonding and reproduction, and endorphins trigger positive feelings.

Personal protective lifestyle Engage in activities that boost your immune resilience and optimize performance.

• Get your Zzzs. Reset your brain with 7–9 hours of restorative sleep nightly and stick to consistent sleep and wake times.

• Practice mindfulness and STOP. Stop, Take a breath, Observe your thoughts and feelings, and Proceed with hope.

• Reflect on what’s good. Develop a resilient mindset by seeking the good in situations. Find opportunities to learn, grow, and be

innovative. And if you need help, ask for it.

• Move more. Perform at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity 5–7 days a week.

• Connect with others. Share meals, walks, and workouts.

Prioritize relationships that nurture you.

• Spend time in nature. Take regular breaks from technology and go outside for 15–20 minutes in the fresh air.

In addition, “getting high quality, screen-free sleep allows the body time and resources to repair itself,” said Vick.

“Sleep is a critical facet for boosting our immune resilience and optimizing performance,” said Kiel.

She highlighted that improved sleep duration and quality can produce almost instantaneous results for improved mental health, pain levels, and risk for infectious disease.

“In fact, studies have shown that sleeping at least eight hours daily on a consistent basis is linked to fewer colds, by a factor of three to fourfold,” she said.

During sleep, our brain works to remove toxins that have built up during the day and allows our mind and body to recharge, repair, and reenergize, she added.

Physical activity is also key.

“Moving the body lubricates muscles and joints, preventing stiffness and pain caused by inflammation,” she said. “Moderate physical exercise gives the added bonus of ramping up the immune system with elements that fight viruses including RSV, COVID-19, and influenza.”

Imagine this, you take time out of your incredibly busy day to take your small child to the dentist. A good start to preventing oral infections or diseases is brushing your child’s teeth twice per day, especially right before bedtime. Bacteria thrive in heated conditions and brushing before bed can prevent them from accumulating on teeth.

Remember that the most important part of brushing anybody’s teeth is the mechanical motion of the toothbrush bristles removing bacte-

ria and not toothpaste itself.

Some other effective ways to prevent bacteria from building in your child’s mouth include avoiding drinking sugary juices and carbonated drinks, particularly right before bed. When considering snacks for your child after a visit to the dentist, it is important to keep nutritional content in mind and how it may affect your kids’ teeth.

According to the AAPD, carrots and celery can offer an extra brush while snacking on them. Now, it’s not uncommon to think your child doesn’t like vegetables. This is where getting creative, like cutting vegetables into different shapes or incorporating them into meals where they are indistinguishable can help.

Moreover, leafy greens like spinach, kale, and broccoli help the body produce saliva that can help keep the mouth clean. It is also important to remember the importance of aiding your child while they brush their teeth.

Day to day, it can be hard to remember the joys and distractions of being a child, when we were all kids at some point. But, if you were anything like me, then you were not the best at brushing your teeth.

Unknowingly, lack of understanding the importance of oral health as a child led to bad oral health in my early adolescent years.

At my first appointment with a dentist, they taught me how and where to focus my efforts when

cleaning my mouth. The problem that I faced was a lack of knowledge transfer from parents to child. My parents had poor oral hygiene and did not enforce or encourage much time to oral care. I knew to brush my teeth, but I did not understand why.

Therefore, it is important to take the time to teach your child about the joy of performing good oral hygiene.

Children that are taught to enjoy cleaning their teeth by creating a fun environment around the entire event, which can remove the fear and anxiety sometimes associated with dental-related activities.

The AAPD recommends you brush your child’s teeth twice a day for at least 2 minutes when they are 2-5 years old to create the habit for when they get old enough to do it on their own. Before 2 years of age, it is also important to brush newly erupted teeth, or teeth that just came out of the gums, along with the surrounding area, especially before bed.

In summation, teaching kids about oral hygiene by removing fear or confusion from oral health, encouraging good snack habits, and understanding how oral health issues are caused will help you, the parent, keep your child happier by reducing stress when visiting the dentist.

Twenty years of excellent service to the community Story and photo by German American Community Office The German-American Community Office (GACO) opened its doors to the public Feb. 19, 2003, based on an initiative of the former Lord Mayor of Kaiserslautern.

The office is jointly operated by bilingual staff from the City of Kaiserslautern, the 86th Airlift Wing and the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. The GACO offers a range of services to members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) and the local population.

Since its opening the staff has assisted more than 45,500 military and civilian members and German citizens. Inquiries frequently center around how to obtain an international driver’s license, retirement questions, landlord issues, German dog keeping regulations, locating relatives, traffic tickets, opening a business, quiet hours, do’s and don’ts, and anything else that

Services at the office are of free of charge, offering information regarding German laws, practices, or local culture.

The team provides brochures on a variety of topics, such as recycling, the German waste separation system, where to find a specific restaurant or a car workshop, in addition to valuable resources about recreational activities and what to do and experience in the area.

The office can also be a great resource for newcomers.

The office is located on Lauterstrasse 2 in Kaiserslautern, right across from the city hall and easy to be spotted with the colorful KMC fish at the corner.

Metz at a glance Metz is situated near the tri-point along the borders of France, Germany and Luxembourg. It sits on the banks of the Moselle and Seille Rivers. This friendly city is a cultural, COM and transportation center of Lorraine and it is one of eight cities in which the French government has targets for special planning and development.

Metz dates back 3,000 years and has many Roman ruins including an aqueduct, thermal baths and part of an amphitheater, as well as an excellent medieval heritage. Metz is also a UNESCO city of music.

Things to see The Saint-Etienne Cathédral (SaintStephen Cathedral of Metz) is a magnificent Gothic building that was built between 1220 and 1552. It is the most visited religious structure in Lorraine and the most luminous cathedral of France.

Nicknamed God’s lantern, SaintEtienne has the largest expanse (70,000 sq feet) of stained glass windows in the world. The windows are the works of master Gothic and Renaissance glass makers of the 13th to the 20th centuries. Three of the windows were made by the 20th century Russian Jewish painter Marc Chagall.

Additionally, on exhibit at the cathedral is the collection of the Bishopric of Metz collection, artifacts of the Holy Roman Empire.

A branch of Pompidou arts center of Paris, the Centre Pompidou-Metz is a modern and contemporary arts museum that was designed by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban and opened in 2010.

Inspired by the shape of a Chinese hat, the building is famed for its unique and complex roof structure.

The museum exhibits semi-permanent and temporary exhibitions from

the collection of the French National Museum of Modern Art. Past exhibitions included works by Picasso, Miro and Calder. Live performances, films and talks also make up the temporary exhibition. Additionally, the museum hosts ongoing art workshops for kids and teens.

The Porte des Allemands (the Gate of the Germans) is a small, fortified castle which served both as a double door and a bridge over the river Seille. The castle gets its name from brothers Notre Dame des Allemands, who founded hospitals nearby. It was built around 1230 and has been a subject of dispute for centuries between French and German control.

Opéra-Théatre de Metz Métropole (Opera House) is one the oldest opera houses in Europe. The 18th century theater (with 750 seating) features plays, dance and lyric poetry. Though the theater is quite grand and elegant, there is no strict dress code.

Cuisine France is known around the world for its exquisite food and “to die for” pastries. The Covered Market (a large covered structure) should not to be missed when in Metz. At the historic market are permanent stalls and shops with local food producers and retailers. The building intended to be the palace for a bishop when construction began in 1785.

However that plan was interrupted by the French Revolution, in which it became the Covered Market in 1833. Adjacent to the Covered Market is the Chamber’s Square (Place de la Chambre), a place where numerous great restaurants and wine bars are located.

A few of the Metz local dishes are quiche, potée (a soup or stew), the Lorraine pâté (a mixture of cooked ground meat), and suckling pig (a piglet fed on its mother’s milk). dark chocolate. The regional wine is the Moselle wine, which is seldom seen in the export market.

Annual events Metz hosts the second most popular Christmas Market in France during the months of November and December.

Other events that bring visitors to the city are the popular Mirabelle Festival with open markets, live music, art exhibits, parades, fireworks and more; a literature festival; Montgolfiades hot air balloon festival and more.

How to get there Metz is just under two hours west of Kaiserslautern, over two and a half hours southwest of Wiesbaden, and three hours west of Stuttgart.
