‘We fixed it!’ AFN moving to 105.1 by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For residents of the Kaiserslautern Military Community who love to cruise down the autobahn listening to American Forces Network Kaiserslautern, don’t be discouraged if the station doesn’t play on radio frequency 100.2 FM starting Wednesday. According to a news release from the Defense Media Activity, AFN Kaiserslautern will move to frequency 105.1 FM to allow cars with American specifications to pick up the station. “This change is a long time coming,” said Master Sgt. Christina Nelson, AFN Kaiserslautern station manager. “We felt our audience’s frustration at not being able to access their local radio station in their cars, and we wanted to fix it.” The original signal was established when you could easily adjust the analog car stereos to tune in any station on the dial. However, with today’s digital U.S. car stereos, you can only tune in the odd-numbered frequencies. See AFN, Page 3

Filing taxes, whether for the first or 30th time, can be a time-consuming and confusing task for anyone. To alleviate some of the stress, volunteers and Airmen from the Ramstein Tax Center are here to make sure active-

duty members are provided with the tax assistance they need. Last year, more than 1,100 KMC members filed their tax returns through the tax center and received more than $2 million in federal returns. Volunteers at the tax center help active-duty military members save approximately $230,000 in fees each year. Starting in February, the tax cen-

Airman coined for eye of excellence by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 18th Air Force commander and command chief coined a 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron airman Dec. 19 on Ramstein. Senior Airman Paige Hoag, 721 AMXS crew chief, was coined by Lt. Gen. Samuel D. Cox, 18th Air Force commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Todd Petzel, 18th Air Force command chief, for her attention to detail during a post-flight inspection. During an inspection last month, Hoag identified a sheared shimmy assembly on the main landing gear of a C-17. Hoag immediately notified her leadership, and the squadron promptly began searching for the resources to fix the damaged gear. After communicating with the 618th Air and Space Operations Center located at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, the logistics experts determined a Boeing repair service needed to perform the maintenance on the aircraft. The Boeing Repair and Modification Service team then began their assessment of the air-

86th Logistics Readiness Squadron gets ‘riggy’ with it Story and photo by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Cargo planes roar through the sky to make airdrops that seem to always hit their marks with precision. This feat is accomplished through constant training and carefully planned pallet packing perfectly performed by Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing. Aerial delivery specialists from the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron are masters of their craft, which requires them to construct pallets, load supplies, pack parachutes and ready the entire package for drop. “Our job is pretty comprehensive and requires us to be versatile,” said Tech. Sgt. Ryan Price, 86 LRS NCO in charge of aerial delivery. “We AFN, from Page 1

Survivor Benefit Plan

For those considering military retirement, one decision you will need to make before you retire involves participation in the Survivor Benefit Plan. As with all good decision making, you need to know the facts before you can make a sound decision. Be wary of anyone telling you they can offer you a better deal. Get the true facts about the SBP before making up your mind by contacting your SBP counselor, Dr. Richard Eleby, at 480-5759 or richard. eleby@us.af.mil.

How are you feeling? Think about that before getting behind the wheel. Are you tired or ill and feeling drowsy? Have you had a few drinks? If you have any indication that your driving may be impaired, think twice and find another ride.

Shoplifting: It’s not worth the risk Courtesy of 86th Mission Support Group “Shoplifting continues to be a problem in our community,” said Lt. Col. Kyle Korver, 86th Mission Support Group deputy commander. “Hopefully reading this article will help people better understand the consequences for this type of criminal activity and prevent individuals from engaging in this behavior here in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center in 2017.” When family members are caught shoplifting, they, along with their military sponsor and the sponsor’s first sergeant or supervisor, will have to meet with Korver and explain their actions. As a result of shoplifting, the offender’s Army and Air Force Exchange Service, 86th Force Support Squadron, Military Welfare and Recreation and commissary privileges are restricted, and the individual is not authorized in any such facility, to include affiliated food service establishments. An individual accompanying someone who is caught may be treated as

an accessory and also have their ID-card privileges restricted. Many shoplifting incidents occur when minors go to the KMCC after school without a parent or adult. It is recommended that parents educate their children on proper behavior in the KMCC and supervise their youth whenever possible. AAFES charges a $200 Civil Recovery Act fee, and German authorities may also take action by imposing a fine for shoplifting. With all the disciplinary actions a shoplifter must face, you may ask, “Why would they do it?” Many teenage offenders do it to see how much they can get away with or to prove to their friends they would not get caught. With many high-tech cameras and undercover store detectives throughout the store as well as security forces on patrol, chances are high they will be caught. A shoplifting incident remains in the Security Forces Management Information System for five years and is accessible during background checks for employment and security clearances. Think about how shoplifting

impacts everyone else — your family, your command, merchants and

your future. Because when you steal, you steal from all of us.

Pet owners must abide by German law by Staff Sgt. Jonathan M. Roland 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Whether welcoming a furry friend from overseas or adopting one in Germany, your pets are a valued part of the KMC. Just like other dependent family members, pets must be registered with the U.S. military. Luckily, this is an easy process that can be accomplished at the Kaiserslautern Veterinary Treatment Facility, located at Bldg. 2928 on Pulaski Barracks. In Germany, the Animal Protection Law keeps both people and pets safe from disease and injury. Enforced by the Department of Public Order, noncompliance can result in costly fines or jail time. By following a few simple rules, you can help avoid trouble and ensure you are a good neighbor. It is mandatory for dogs, cats and ferrets to have an implanted radio frequency identification chip and wear an identification tag at all times. This is required to verify pets have current vaccinations and ensure they can be reunited with their families. Keeping vaccinations up to date and taking sick pets to the vet is important to prevent the spread of disease.

Owners cannot limit an animal’s opportunity for species-specific movement. Dogs cannot be left alone for more than five hours without being walked. They cannot be chained up, locked in a crate or confined to a bedroom or balcony. If kept outside in a kennel, a dog must have a minimum of 6 square meters of exercise area, a two-compartment dog house and a third of the kennel must be covered. Dogs cannot roam unattended, and they must be on a leash when in the proximity of the public. Cats are not required to be

confined to your property or attached to a leash. However, allowing your cat to roam freely exposes them to danger, and you are responsible for any damage or mischief they might cause. Bird feeding is legal, but do not feed other wild or feral animals. Attracting wild animals to our community brings them in contact with our family members. This may cause physical injury or the spread of disease. The German government is responsible for the care and feeding of wild animals in times of dis-

tress; do not hinder their efforts. Report injured or nuisance animals to the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Entomology Shop at 314-489-6623 or 0631-536-6623 and rest easy because the animals will not be harmed. Finally, German law and U.S. Army Europe regulations strictly forbid abandoning pets. Leaving pets to live in the wild is cruel and inhumane. For this reason, it is punishable by a €25,000 fine and up to three years in prison. Pets are family; don’t leave them behind!

Americans, Germans pair up to rock out

Story and photos by Senior Airman Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

A brightness shines in their eyes as a dull roar rises from the silhouettes in front. Six clicks signal to the shadows; they respond in jubilant rapture as a musical explosion courses across the darkness. For a Team Ramstein member, his wingmanship extends far beyond the reaches of the work center and into the realm of rock ’n’ roll. During a concert at the Red Barn in Kaiserslautern, Warrant Officer Jonathan Reed’s guitar squeals, and a grin comes across his face. He steps up to the microphone and his rich, warm voice soothes the savage beasts in the cramped crowd. He begins singing, “I can see it in your eyes, you’re down and out.” Reed, 603rd Air and Space Operations Center, 19th Battlefield Coordination Detachment airspace management officer in charge, uses his love of music to open doors to citizens of Germany with the help of his band, Roll ’N’ Rock. “I joined up about a year ago now,” Reed said. “We’ve really taken off. … We’ve had a lot more paying gigs outside of the area.” Roll ’N’ Rock is made up of Americans and Germans. The sevenpiece band blends southern rock, blues and country western to produce a wall of sound designed to do more than just get people’s toes tapping. “Anytime we play near a big American base we get a mix of Americans and Germans in the crowd,” Reed said. “Once the party gets going then nobody cares. Everyone’s dancing. Everyone’s having fun. And nobody really cares if you’re German or American or what-

ever, and they’re just having a good time at the show.” The band uses heavy bass grooves and complex vocal lines to paint a musical picture to the primarily German audience. “I didn’t know any Germans owned cowboy boots and hats,” Reed said. “We’ve played several shows where you would have thought you were in a dance hall in Texas.” Syncing up in a musical trance, Reed and his bandmates move in rhythm with the congregation gathered below the stage. The band closes a song to thunderous applause. Before the crowd can catch their breath, the

music starts back up again, playing one of the band’s favorites, “Take Me Home Country Roads,” written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert and John Denver. Roll ’N’ Rock began playing in 2013 and now tours the country, creating and building community bonds through music. “(The band) shows the best of both worlds,” Reed said. “It shows how Americans and Germans can get up on a stage together and do a lot of work and practice and rehearsals to have a shared goal. … As we go forth and play mostly American music both with some Germans, we do an old Johnny Cash song, ‘Folsom Prison Blues.’ But at the end, it’s the same chords and the same kind of melody, (and) we tack on a German song right into one of the most American songs you get, from Johnny Cash straight into a very traditional Bavarian song.” Reed’s love of music is obvious when he’s on stage. His face and body match the tone of the song, from a grimace during an intense solo to a tender glance during a ballad. “I didn’t start playing guitar until college,” Reed said. “And then I played a lot of guitar, eight or nine hours a day, every day. I’ve always had a love for music, from country to rock to the blues. Growing up in Texas, country music is never far away.”

His bandmates know and share Reed’s appreciation for their art, said Charles Fastiggi, Roll ’N’ Rock band member. “I started with music when I was about 2 or 3 years old,” Fastiggi said. “I started playing violin when I was about 10. I was brought up classically trained. I didn’t really know how to play other styles until I started playing with others.” This love of music helps Reed, and by extension Roll ’N’ Rock, push forward the mission of generating and employing airpower by putting a face to the Air Force, said Reed. “Once people know who we are, we’re no longer this shadowy figure,” Reed said. “We’re not just airplanes in the sky or boots on the ground. We’re people. We have hearts. We learn and grow just like everyone else.” Roll ’N’ Rock’s star is quickly rising. At the International Country Music Awards held at the Pullman City theme park in Bavaria, Roll ’N’ Rock took second place in the country rock category. “We were really surprised by the result,” Fastiggi said. “We went just to play and have fun. But to take second is really awesome, and we love that we got to share that with a bunch of people.” The crowd screams for an encore as the band takes a bow. All smiles and sweat, Roll ’N’ Rock obliges, playing just one more song.

McDonald 21st Theater Sustainment Command B R E M E R H AV E N , Germany — The first pieces of equipment from 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, rolled off the boat Jan. 6 in Bremerhaven, beginning back-to-back rotations of U.S. troops and armor in Europe. The brigade equipment, about 2,800 vehicles and containers, is scheduled to move from Bremerhaven by rail, commercial line haul and military convoy to training areas at Drawsko Pomorskie and Zagan, Poland, where the brigade will consolidate before relocating units across countries from Estonia to Bulgaria beginning in February. “This is a tangible sign of the United States’ commitment to maintaining peace on this continent, said Maj. Gen. Timothy McGuire, U.S. Army Europe deputy commanding general. “It is a sign of the U.S. commitment to this alliance and to peace and prosperity in Europe. Showing that commitment will involve training with seven countries for the duration of the rotation. Following the initial consolidation, the brigade head-

Military vehicles from 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, roll off the ship ARC Resolve Jan. 6 in Bremerhaven, Germany, marking the beginning of back-to-back rotations of armored brigades in Europe as part of Atlantic Resolve. The vehicles and equipment, totaling more than 2,700 pieces, will be shipped to Poland for certification before deploying across Europe for use in training with partner nations.

quarters; brigade engineering and support battalions; 3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Regiment; and 4th Squadron, 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, will operate from existing Polish military installations in Zagan, Swietoszow, Skwierzyna and Boleslawiec. First Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, will move to the Baltic nations and remain positioned there until NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence, or eFP, battle groups are in place and then will rotate throughout Europe to participate in exercises as requested. The 1st Battalion, 8th

Infantry Regiment, will support Atlantic Resolve activities primarily in Bulgaria and Romania. The 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment “Iron Knights, will move to Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, where it will conduct training and maintenance to build and sustain readiness. “The best way to maintain peace is preparation, McGuire said. “The more we work together (with our allies), the better prepared we are. The movement from the United States was, itself, the initial training event for the

unit in Europe. The arrival of the shipped equipment also trained the U.S. Army Soldiers in Europe from 21st Theater Sustainment command who coordinated the move from Germany to Poland.

“It’s the first deployment of an armor brigade for nine months in many, many years,â€? said Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commanding general. “As we have responded to aggression in the East, we have rotated units into Germany and into Poland and out over the last few years. “They have come for four months, six months or shorter periods of time,â€? Gamble continued. “This is the first one that will come for nine months and stay. It’s the first one that has brought its own equipment with them. So, in terms of training, what better training than to have a unit leave Fort Carson, move to a seaport in Texas, load its equipment on three vessels ‌ and then deploy their Soldiers by air. It’s an absolutely exquisite training event.â€? The unit will have a capstone training event in Poland in July. They will be replaced in September by another armor brigade, with one unit arriving and 3/4ABCT returning to Fort Carson, Colorado.

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Today is Friday the 13th. Superstitious people are afraid of this day. They see it as a day of bad luck. Some don’t even want to leave their house so nothing can happen to them. The number 13 is known as a fatal number. In some cultures, hotels and hospitals don’t have room number 13, buildings don’t have a 13th floor, and planes don’t have a row 13. Thirteen is above the symbolic number of 12. In former cultures, 12 played an important role. There are 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 months, 12 prophets and 12 apostles. But at the Last Supper, 13 apostles sat together, and Judas, the 13th in the round, betrayed Jesus. Why is Friday so dangerous? According to

some traditions, it has to do with Christianity. Jesus was crucified on a Friday. Ever since, Friday was known as a day of mourning and fasting. Others believe media helped to create this fear for Friday the 13th. The crash of stock exchange happened on Friday the 13th in May 1927, also known as Black Friday. The unsuccessful moon flight of Apollo 13 started at 13:13 on a Friday. Some big names of world history avoided the thirteenth: Napoleon never led a fight on the thirteenth; Otto von Bismarck, chancellor of the German Empire, did not sign any contracts that day; Henry Ford never worked on Friday the 13th; and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt never sat at a dinner table with 13 guests. The year 2017 has one more Friday the 13th in October.

7 TIPS FOR EXPERIENCING

GERMANY

the Esso Fuel finder. Travel on famous routes such as the German Romantic Road or do it the old fashion way and just grab a map and go!

Each year many people set New Year’s Resolutions in which some they keep and some they don’t. To have an incredible experience while stationed in Germany, here are seven New Year’s Resolutions you should definitely keep!

3. Gather your flip flops and take a beach holiday in the new year! Beaches in Europe can be a different experience than the ones we are used to in the States. Catch some rays in mainland Spain or Italy or even discover the beauty of German beaches! Photo by anweber / Shutterstock.com

1. Shop at German food stores. Perhaps try to shop for your groceries there for a full month. Strive to always try a new item not found in American food stores. 2. Find and take a cheap flight somewhere! Check out our Tips on Booking a Cheap Ryanair Flight. Find a free long weekend and book a destination that has the best price! You will discover and explore a new place that you normally would have not chosen. Or for the more daring, go on a Blind Booking flight with Germanwings. Here you book your flight at random with one low fixed price, starting at 33 Euros! You are able to select a category of what type of trip you would like to take, and then you find out your surprise destination at the end of the booking.

4. Feel the speed of an ICE train! Travel to a new city on a fast German ICE train while sitting back and relaxing. Have a croissant and sip some wine. They even have Saver-tickets, starting at 29 Euros when you travel within Germany. 5. Plan an epic road trip! Pack the car with drinks, food and plan your gas stops with

6. Explore your own town. Small villages have amazing charm and history just waiting to be discovered. See where the locals go, perhaps a park or lake. Join them in the local pubs or family owned restaurants. Like they say, strangers are just friends you haven’t met yet! 7. Learn new German words. Learn more than the basic vocabulary or phrases like “Wo ist der Bahnhof?” (Where is the train station?) You can also learn words that will help you be more a part of the conversation. Here are some ideas: Exactly – Genau Maybe – Vielleicht Nice – Schön All right – Alles klar Great! – Toll! Fine – Prima Fantastic – Fantastisch Likewise – Gleichfalls Doesn’t matter – Macht Nichts No difference – Ganz Egal All is well – Alles Gut Fabulous – Fabelhaft Happy New Year from the Military in Germany Team! Author’s Profile: Gemma is a mom, a veteran and an Army civilian living in Wiesbaden, Germany. With New Jersey roots, she is enjoying her extended European vacation.
