Leaders know when to follow Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Kristof Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Senior Airman Gerald Walker, 728th Air Mobility Squadron hydraulics system technician, was one of 150 students from the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing and 512th Airlift Wing completing an unprecedented training opportunity on a C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft on Ramstein Air Base from Nov. 26 to Dec. 6, 2018. Lt. Col. Robert Ryder, 521st AMOW deputy commander for operations, said maintaining current and uniform training for all Airmen within the 521st AMOW is a difficult endeavor, particularly for Airmen belonging to geographically separated units of the wing, such as Walker who is stationed at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. “The mission is very important to me,” said Walker. “If we don’t get a job done and a plane doesn’t take off See LEADERS KNOW, Page 2

LEADERS KNOW from Page 1 on time, someone may not get the equipment they need; or worse, someone coming home from deployment might not get home on time.” Throughout the two-week training, Walker stood out as an exemplary learner. At his last base, Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, Walker said he took the initiative to be a leader and a problem solver. During this two week training course, however, Walker acknowledged the idea that in order to continue being a great leader, one must know when to follow. Walker encountered several new topics throughout the training, but he said the unfamiliar material did not discourage him. He said his instructors showed extreme patience to ensure his understanding on any given topic. “I’m coming from a base where we don’t usually see the C-5, so this was my first experience with it,” said Walker.

This task was one of the approximately 1,000 tasks 141 students learned and trained on throughout the two week training exercise.
“My job this week was to learn as much as possible so I could take all this knowledge back. Before coming here, I had next to no knowledge on this jet. Now the things I got signed off on I can confidently do when I get home.” Over the course of the exer-

cise, 521st AMOW Regional Training Center instructors understood the significance of the training opportunity by providing the initial instruction and follow-up answers to the variety of questions students had throughout the learning process. “It took me a little while to catch on, but the instructors were very nice and did not mind backtracking with us as a group or with me personally after the group moved on,” said Walker. “The first time seeing things was hard but the second time it all kind of clicked for me.” Col. Bradley Spears, 521st AMOW commander, said this training enables maintainers to work on an air frame they don’t get to see often as the Air Force has reduced the number of missions for the aircraft. Within the C-5M Super Galaxy, Walker and the other Airmen worked on multiple systems, their experiences spanning five career fields. Airmen learned how to service struts,
auxiliary power units, and hydraulics. Learning information from complimentary career fields allowed Airmen to increase the breadth of their knowledge at an early stage within their career. Master Sgt. John Paull, 521st AMOW Regional Training Center superintendent, is one of the people responsible for coordinating the training. “One of the biggest things we’ve heard from training feedback is guys don’t feel comfortable because they haven’t trained on the aircraft in a while,” said Paull. “So, with this ground trainer it was a good opportunity to get that touch time, run through systems multiple times until they feel comfortable with it. We want to send our Airmen back to their units knowing that they’re confident to get the job done.” Due to strong leadership, he said he was molded into a studious individual who continues to work towards perfecting his craft. “When it comes to my per-
sonal drive, many of my family members have served before me and instilled the belief this is more than a job,” said Walker. “When I’m working on a plane, I remind myself that this is bigger than just adding fuel. I’m adding this fuel to a plane, so it can do something bigger. I’m the small gear that has to turn so the big gears can.” The determination seen in 521st AMOW Airmen, like Walker, and the innovation realized by the wing’s regional training center has allowed the wing to accomplish a successful training management despite the overall reduction of C-5 missions in the en route system. Maj. Brad Seehawer, 521st AMOW executive officer, said he was impressed by the innovation and the amount of training accomplished by the wing’s Airmen. “From the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, to Air Mobility Command, to the U.S. Expeditionary Center, we’ve been charged to foster a culture of innovation within our units,” said Seehawer. “This C-5 trainer is an example of this kind of innovation, where two wings came together to find a mutually-beneficial solution towards increasing readiness of the Total Force without the help of higher headquarters. As we develop a more lethal and resilient force postured to achieve the goals outlined by the National Defense Strategy, we have a responsibility to be agile, adaptive and creative. The men and women of the 521st AMOW will continue to provide timely movement, positioning, and sustainment of joint forces wherever they’re needed in this rapidly-changing global security environment.”

The 86th Airlift Wing commander and command chief lauded Staff Sgt. Daniel Thompson, for his excellence in executing the Air Force’s mission across
the European theater of operation. Thompson, originally from Arlington, Texas, implemented a new tracking process for the squadron training office which mitigated scheduling shortfalls. His efforts validated 139 ground training events and enabled 226.8 aircraft flying hours, 95 sorties, and nine distinguished visitor missions. Furthermore, Thompson put his culinary skills to the test by prepar-
ing a meal for the King and Queen of Belgium. “The enlisted aides reached out to the flight attendants and asked for help because they were preparing a six-course meal for the King and Queen,” said Thompson. The Supreme Allied Commander Europe met with the King and Queen for dinner. To give them a taste of the United States, Thompson and his culi-
nary partners created a variety of dishes popular in different states. Thompson said he felt honored to be recognized for his hard work. “There’s a lot of other people that do this job as well,” said Thompson. “I really appreciate them putting me up for this.” The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the World’s Best Wing.

AFIMSC continues to innovate in 2019
U.S. Airmen prepare simulated munitions during the Combat Support Wing exercise at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, Sept. 18, 2018. Photos by Armando Perez
by Steve Warns Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center Public Affairs The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center has been at the innovation forefront since it stood up in 2015, and it’s taking it to the next level in 2019. In addition to more than 50 innovations fielded to date that are having a positive effect on installation and mission support operations, the organization’s commitment to be the I&MS innovation leader took a major step forward with the stand-up of an innovation office in November. “Innovation spurred the creation of the Air Force, and innovation is what has made the Air Force the best in history,” said Brig. Gen. Brian Bruckbauer, director of the AFIMSC Expeditionary Support Directorate. “We are seeing a resurgence of nearpeer competitors, and we need innovative Airmen to counter today’s threats and ensure we have the ability to protect our national interests.” Chief among AFIMSC’s innovations is the annual Installation and Mission Support Weapons and Tactics Conference (I-WEPTAC). The Air Force’s only I&MS innovation forum develops solutions for challenges facing the agile combat support community. This year’s I-WEPTAC will be held April 10 in San Antonio, with a theme of “The Installation Weapons System in Multi-Domain Operations.” “It provides both a forum for Warfighter innovation and a process to
quickly turn ideas into capability,” said Maj. Gen. Brad Spacy, AFIMSC commander. “This innovative agility is key to staying out in front of the threats.” I-WEPTAC spawned two Air Force innovations: the Combat Support Wing and the Installation Investment Strategy (I2S). The CSW evolved from an idea to four proof-of-concept exercises this year that tested a small team’s capability to conduct agile downrange operations. Airmen stepped out of their comfort zones to learn core skills from Air Force specialty codes other than their own. It validated an innovative way to deliver airpower lethality more efficiently and effectively anywhere in the world. The I2S blossomed from the Installation Health Assessment initiative. The IHA tool, which became operational in 2017, initially targeted facility sustainment, restoration and modernization mission areas. AFIMSC continued to expand on the IHA tool in FY18, adding data for additional installation and mission support areas and enhancing predictive analysis capabilities across the 22 installation and mission support areas to better inform investment strategies. The tool is a first-ofits kind, Tableau-based framework that combines and evaluates data from a variety of other tools and databases. The Secretary of the Air Force’s Installation, Environment and Energy utilized big data to champion an infrastructure investment strategy with an end state of fiscally sustainable infrastructure to assure combat
2018 Installation and Mission Support Weapons and Tactics Conference attendees read about one of the four mission area working group chairmen who led a team to think innovatively in tackling one of the Air Force’s toughest agile combat support challenges during the San Antonio event out-brief. The May 16 out-brief presented proposed solutions to about 1,000 senior Air Force leaders and members of the installation and mission support community.
readiness, lethality and Airmen resilience. Every commander at the Air Force’s 10 major commands signed off on the strategy and understands the effect of the installation as a weapons system. IHA and the Air Force Innovation Hub Network (AFWERX), in particular, demonstrate AFIMSC’s goal to quickly bring innovative ideas to implementation, said Marc Vandeveer, AFIMSC chief innovation officer. AFWERX, which has hubs in Las Vegas and Washington, D.C., opened an office in Austin, Texas, and AFIMSC was the first Air Force organization to work with the Austin Hub. AFIMSC allocated $150,000 to partner with AFWERX on advancing unmanned aerial vehicle use on installations. Seeing the immediate potential, AFWERX provided $50,000 in matching funds, and the Small Business Innovation Research program added another $750,000. As a result, the Air Force Civil Engineer Center partnered with a small Austin-based start-up to utilize UAVs fitted with high-tech sensors to conduct aerial mapping and integrate machine learning algorithms to automate floodplain mapping, vegetation classification and identifying endangered species. This partnership will potentially save $2 million annually in mission sustainment costs while increasing mission effectiveness. “As the ecosystem matures, we’ll see more ideas move toward real implementation, and we’ll see the number of ideas submitted continue
to grow,” Vandeveer said. “We’ll be able to advance technologies, process and increase capabilities, increase efficiency and reduce costs.” Global turmoil and uncertainty has not only put greater emphasis on innovation but also on ensuring comprehensive Airman fitness. The Alpha Warrior program, managed by the Air Force Services Activity, revolutionized how the Air Force delivers functional fitness with a combination of obstacle courses and fitness apparatuses to hone the four pillars of Comprehensive Airmen Fitness – physical, mental, social and spiritual. “What Airmen get out of accomplishing Alpha Warrior is confidence,” Spacy said. “That confidence is gained from using their physical and mental strength to complete the course, and they can take that confidence back to their duty stations or to a deployed environment.” In 2018, the Alpha Warrior team rolled out functional fitness training to 41 bases and launched the first Inter-Service Final Battle at Retama Park in Selma, Texas, a northeast suburb of San Antonio. The Air Force beat their Army and Navy peers to claim the championship. Alpha Warrior will continue to revolutionize functional fitness for Airmen by possibly adding battle rigs to the basic military training physical conditioning program and adding battle rigs in permanent deployment locations such as Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. Promoting tab testing across the Wings to earn Commander’s Cup points and encourage competition between the squadrons is also planned.

General winter recreation tips Photo by gorillaimages / Shutterstock.com
by 86th Airlift Wing Safety office While winter may not be everyone’s favorite season, many look forward to this time of year for the numerous recreational activities the season offers. We want you to get out and enjoy yourself, but we want you to be smart and safe about it. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you take part in winter recreation. Stay hydrated Just because the weather isn’t hot doesn’t mean you’re not depleting fluids. Breathing in cold air can be dehydrating. This can lead to exhaustion and put you in danger. Always bring along a large water bottle and sip steadily throughout the day. Dress the part Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you won’t break a sweat while being active. Damp clothes can lower body temperature, so dress in layers you can easily take on and off. Wear thermal underwear, a second insulating layer, a fleece vest or jacket, water and windproof pants, and an outer coat, gloves and hat.
Pack smart If you’re headed out for a quick trek, make sure you’ve got your layers of clothing, water, sunscreen and a snack. If you are planning on staying out most of the day or heading for an off-trail adventure, pack the following: two bottles of water, high nutrient snacks such as granola (pack more than you think you’ll need), a small first aid kit, pocket knife, headlamp, compass, extra clothes, emergency blanket, fire starting kit, guidebook and map. Tell a friend Never leave without telling someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Tell your contact what your itinerary is and don’t forget to notify them once you get home safely. Be avalanche aware Be cognizant of the avalanche potential in your area. Heed warnings and observe conditions. Avalanche dangers are higher during and right after snowfalls. Any slope greater than 30 degrees can have significant avalanche risks. Investing in an avalanche beacon is a good idea. This device sends out radio signals that can help authorities locate you while buried under snow.
Skiing and snowboarding • Wear a helmet • Wear eye protection • Learn to fall correctly; don’t over-correct, attempt to break the fall or try to stay standing on your skis • Respect boundaries: steering clear of the closed trails and out-of-bounds areas on a mountain can save you an avalanche of trouble • If you find yourself on a slope that exceeds your ability level, leave your skis/snowboard on and side step down the slope • Remember people ahead of you have the right of way • Know how to use the lifts safely Ice skating • Only skate in locations you know are safe; look for rinks, ponds and lakes that have posted signs indicating skating is safe; avoid skating on a lake, river or pond after several days of unseasonable mild weather • Protect yourself with wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads, especially while you’re learning to skate • Wear skates that fit comfortably and provide enough ankle support to keep you on your feet
• Have the blades professionally sharpened at the beginning of each season • Never skate alone Sledding • Make sure your sled is sturdy and steerable; handholds should be easy to grab and the seat should be padded • Wear gloves and boots while you’re on the sled because in addition to keeping you warm, they help prevent injuries to hands and feet • Wear a helmet • Make sure the hill you use isn’t too steep and is covered with snow, NOT ice • The hill must not end anywhere near cars or the road • Look out for obstacles in your path like trees, bushes and rocks that are covered in snow • Sled only in daylight or in well-lit areas • Ensure the person sledding before you is well out of the way before you take off • Always sit up; lying down puts you at greater risk for injuries • Never ride on a sled that’s being pulled by a car, truck or snowmobile
Trash Talk: Recycling on, off installations by Airman 1st Class Ariel Leighty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Germany leads the world in recycling, peaking at 70 percent waste being recycled and reused in recent years. To put that into perspective, the U.S. only recovers about 33 percent annually. When moving to Germany, recycling is a habit to which some U.S. citizens have a difficult time adjusting. Tomas Weber, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron environmental protection specialist, said some recurring disposal issues include residents not waiting to put bulk trash on the curb the night before collection and failing to properly sort recyclables and trash as directed by German law and installation policies.
The U.S. government spends nine million euro every year on recycling and trash-removal contracts and penalties due to service members and families not adhering to the host nation’s recycling laws and improper waste dumping. German law requires recycling of paper products, plastics, metals, petroleum products, batteries, tires, wood pallets, empty toner cartridges, furniture, used clothing, and shoes. But deciding to recycle is just the first step; the individual will also want to make sure the items are recycled correctly. According to Waste Management, an American trash collecting company, the average recycling contamination rate, or incorrect disposal of recyclables, is 25 percent. This means one in four items thrown in a recycling bin isn’t recyclable and these American recycling habits fol-
low us when traveling to other countries. When items are not properly separated, recycling contractors will be turned away at landfills and the U.S. government is then required to pay fines. The Kaiserslautern Military Community has recycling centers located at building 5146 on Ramstein and building 2821 on Vogelweh, which accepts all types of recyclables generated on base. Residents living off base may utilize the bases’ recycling centers for disposal of household hazardous waste. Following the set policy for recycling will not only save the government money, but will also prevent additional spending of taxpayers’ dollars. The 786th CES would like to make proper disposal of trash a New Year’s resolution. There are resources on all installations to enable and empower Airmen
and their families to properly take care of them, heeding military regulations and German law. If you or your family have any questions, call the 786th CE office at 489-7703.

Wetzel Keystone Club brings teens’ voices to national level Wetzel Keystone Club President Zeth Jackson and Wetzel Keystone Club Adviser and Teen Center Director Ryan Flynn display the banner they received for earning Legacy Keystone Charter in 2017 and 2018. Jackson and Flynn have been selected to serve on the steering committee for the 2019 Boys & Girls Clubs of America Keystone Conference, an annual conference for teens to explore relevant issues faced by teens worldwide and develop leadership skills.
Story and photo by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Thousands of teens gather annually at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Keystone Conference to explore relevant issues faced by teens worldwide and develop leadership skills needed to support efforts at their local BGCA clubs and communities. The issues and topics brought to light at the conferences come from a steering committee made up of 10 teens and their advisers, carefully selected from BGCA locations worldwide through an application process. This year, for the first time, Wetzel Keystone Club President Zeth Jackson holds a spot on that steering committee along with Wetzel Keystone Club Adviser and Teen Center Director Ryan Flynn. Jackson, a 17-year-old senior at Baumholder Middle/High School, has been a member of Wetzel Teen Center and its Keystone Club for four years, serving as vice president before assuming his current role as president. He said the opportunity to serve on the 2019 steering committee means big things for Wetzel Keystone Club.
“This is big for us because it shows even as a small group, we can make a big impact,” Jackson said. “We see things differently than bigger groups – so it’s nice that we will be able to voice our opinions into bigger ideas.” Not only is Jackson representing one of the smaller BGCA groups, he’s also one of the only militaryaffiliated members on the teen committee, and the sole overseas member. Flynn said this allows Jackson to bring a different insight to the team. “It’s nice for the national committee staff to hear what issues the overseas teens are facing. It’s a whole different population when you’re dealing with overseas military youth compared to traditional youth club settings in the States,” Flynn explained. Jackson along with the other nine committee members are the youth who determine the theme of the conference, what activities will take place on- and off-site, and which teen issues the activities will center around. In order to get the process started, Jackson and Flynn attended a planning meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, in November. “We made the outline for the conference — what is needed and who will be doing what job — now the
BGCA staff are going to take what we put together and make it happen,” Jackson explained. The BGCA staff leave the majority of the planning to the teens because they want them to find their voices, sparking future leaders or future Keystone advisers among them, Flynn said. Flynn, who is serving for the first time as an adviser on the steering committee, brings a wealth of knowledge to the team having served as Wetzel Keystone Club adviser for five years and a previous Keystone Conference attendee. He praised the club members for their efforts in getting the club recognized on a national level. “The youth have put in a large amount of work to get our Keystone Club to where it is — hours of community service and a lot of planning,” he explained. Even as a small group, the club has been largely involved with the local communities, including activities such as visiting German teen centers for networking opportunities and baking cookies for the Fisher Houses at Landstuhl. “Everyone wants to have a voice but it’s also good to put some action behind that voice and get out there and do things and change the world
that way,” Flynn said. “Service learning and networking is really important. It can ignite a spark for youth and then they take it farther.” In Jackson’s case, that spark was ignited at the 2018 Keystone Conference and led him to pursue the leadership role for 2019. Community service work, making friends and networking were the biggest takeaways for him, along with spreading awareness to issues teens around the world are facing. His hopes for the 2019 conference fall in line with his 2018 experience. “I hope everyone that attends the conference this year has the best time, and I hope they take the teen issues back to their centers and spread awareness so we can try to help the teen issues on a huge scale,” Jackson said. “If the attendees take what they’ve learned back to their clubs and start talking about it, it allows others that didn’t get to attend the conference to see that it’s an amazing experience so that the conference can grow. I’d like to see it grow.” Keystone Club is available to youth ages 14 and older at all military teen centers overseas. To find out more, contact your local teen center.

721st AMXS celebrates more than 365 days DUI free Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Ariel Leighty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron started the New Year off celebrating the entire year of 2018 with no DUIs. Dec. 18, 2018, marked 365 days the squadron has been free of any alcohol related incidents. During the holiday season, irresponsible alcohol consumption is heightened and the possibility of making it a full 365 days with no alcohol related incidents was a concern. According to the U.S. Substance Abuse Council, the time between Christmas and New Year’s sees an average increase in fatalities involving alcohol-impaired drivers by 34 percent. “Anytime an Airman gets a DUI or an alcohol related incident, it doesn’t just affect the individual Airman,” said Tech. Sgt. Nicholas Royer, 721st AMXS section chief. “It affects everyone and the people closest to them.” The 721st AMXS overcame the obstacle by organizing a small group of volunteer Airmen Against Drunk Driving, a designated-driver program within the squadron with Staff Sgt.
Ciaran Lacey, 721st AMXS crew chief, residing as president of the program. The goal of AADD is to prevent alcohol related incidents within the squadron, reduce the number of DUIs, educate service members on the severe consequences of drinking and driving and improve relations between Airmen. Lacey said with the creation of the squadron AADD program, the 13 volunteers potentially saved the lives of 38 Airmen by ensuring they had a safe way home. Airmen volunteered more than 4,400 hours cumulatively throughout 2018 to the AADD program. With the success of accomplishing their goal, the squadron held a lock-in event inside the squadron hangar Jan. 5. Airmen were encouraged to bring their families to stay overnight in the hangar to enjoy food, fun, and a multitude of games such as Nerf wars, a bounce house, and Tug-of-War. “You had officers and Airmen all coming together and supporting one another,” said Master Sgt. Kalvin Ball, 721st AMXS section chief. “The events brought everyone together and created a new sense of comradery within the

“It promoted the wingman concept within all of us to take care of one another, and we’re glad to be able to have that trust within a squadron,” said Ball.

Tackling holiday debt in new year Learn how to get a handle on your finances today at the Army Community Service Financial Readiness Office. Financial counselors can help with creating a budget, paying off debts and saving for the future.
Story and photos by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz If one of your New Year’s resolutions is paying off your credit card debt, let the experts at the U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Army Community Service Financial Readiness Office help. People tend to rack up credit card charges during the holidays, which can take a long time to pay back — especially if card interest accrues at a high rate, said Nyesha Burton, Financial Readiness specialist and accredited financial counselor. “It could take people months or even the entire next year to get holiday debts knocked out. That is in addition to regular financial obligations,” she said. “Can you imagine paying for last year’s Christmas presents until Christmas this year?” Burton said the first strategy is to prioritize. People can begin by sitting down and ranking all their debts. “This can be best accomplished by looking at your balances for each bill. Find the debt with the lowest balance and tackle that first by aggressively paying it, while still paying the minimum payment on other debts,” she explained. “Then, move on to the next smallest debt and tackle it the same way you tack-
led the first debt. This is done until all your debts are paid off. You may have heard of this approach as “’The Snowball Method.’” Paying off debts one by one is a good way to get a sense of immediate gratification, while not overwhelming your bank account, Burton said. But for those who are hard chargers and want to pay debts down even faster, they can pay their balances off at one time and be done with it. It may be difficult, but it can be done. Additionally, tax season is coming, which may yield refunds for some people or they may receive a bonus during the year. Make a plan to apply that extra money to debts. Whether you pay off debts one at a time or all at once, paying off debts may give people a sense of financial freedom, she said. The ACS Financial Readiness Office has several classes to help you become more fiscally responsible. • Readiness & Consumer Affairs • Individual financial counseling • Pre-screening and counseling for Soldiers who qualify for the Family Subsistence Supplemental Allowance (FSSA) • Debt Liquidation Assistance • Consumer Advocacy
• Emergency Financial Assistance (only available to active/retired military and their ID card Family members) • Credit Report reviews • Couples and Individual financial counseling
you create a good habit that can be passed down from you to your family, co-workers, employees,” Burton said. “Make a New Year’s resolution to help yourself by having a better financial life through better planning, saving and spending.”
A good way to get ahead of the holidays next year is to have a healthy savings plan, Burton said. “Creating and contributing to a holiday fund now will help you save and avoid using high interest credit cards next year, plus it will help

Local wrestlers show skills in all weight classes by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Six teams featuring five defending European champions were greeted by a raucous and energetic full house at the Brave New World Wrestling Tournament in Kaiserslautern’s new gym Jan. 12. Host Kaiserslautern was joined by Ramstein, Wiesbaden, Stuttgart, SHAPE, and Spangdahlem. Stuttgart won six weight classes, including three of the heaviest four divisions. Ramstein won three weight classes. Kaiserslautern’s points came from sophomore Danny Aldana’s third place finish at 126, Christian Forker’s third place at 160 and freshman Javonte Reeves fourth place finish at 132 pounds. The historic first dual in the new gym was one of the most entertaining for its action, but also significant because of who competed. At 113 pounds, Ramstein’s Megan Short held the edge for the first seven and a half minutes of the match. But Faith Fairel of Wiesbaden turned her around and held on long enough for the three point pick up and the 9-8 victory. The significance? Last year more than 16,000 girls wrestled in high school throughout the United States and are readily competing against boys. In a battle of defending European champions, Ramstein’s Connor Mackie defeated Atreyu Allen of Wiesbaden at 126 pounds. Royals Christian Griffith won at 132 and Theodore Ward was the winner at 220. Perhaps the best wrestler in the field was Stuttgart senior Benjamin Fielding who is seeking another European crown at 138 pounds. Fielding immediately caught the attention of the crowd when in his
first match he took the cue from the referee indicating game on, then approached, flattened and pinned his opponent in less than 15 seconds. He went on to win the title, defeating Ramstein’s Logan Campbell in the final match. Apparently the talent runs in the family. His sister, sophomore McKinley, won the 106 pound weight class, defeating defending European champion senior Andres Hart of Ramstein. Trip Carroll of Stuttgart defended his European heavyweight title. At 235 pounds and well over six feet, Carroll stands out. His goal after graduation is to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and wrestle there if he makes the team. He has only been wrestling for three years and says, admittedly, that he still has a lot to learn. But he showed his immense potential and cruised through the field, defeating the opponent he said gives him the most competition, Jackson Fontenot of Wiesbaden. With the victory, Carroll is the clear favorite to repeat as the top heavyweight in Europe. Putting on a six-team, all-day-long wrestling event takes time, effort and excellent organization. Kaiserslautern Head Coach Brian Daly oversaw the management of the meet. “We started planning for this tournament at the beginning of the week,” Daly said. “Making sure that we have everything needed to run a successful tournament and ahead of time is key. We are also lucky enough to have two of the best tournament directors in the business, Sue Fortunato and Dave Hemmer, work here at K-Town. But, in the end it could not be done without parental support and student volunteers. They are the ones who truly make tournament a success.”

Wrestling may also be the most intensely physical athletic endeavor. Imagine flexing every muscle in your body for nine minutes with a person that feels like a block of granite laying on you, tugging at your arms or holding them to the mat, turning you into a pretzel, tying up your legs, and countering every move you make to
get you on your back, hold both shoulders to the mat to get a pin. In basketball or baseball or football, they get moments of rest and are able to catch their breath. On the mat, a moment of rest could mean getting thrown on the back and pinned. The wrestler knows that one moment of indecision, of relaxing, and he or she and the mat are

intimately introduced. When trouble arises, the brain goes into overdrive to try to escape the peril. It is exhausting, both mentally and physically. But it is a lesson they will learn for life. “Wrestling teaches students that they are only going to be as successful as the effort they put in,” Daly said. “It teaches students the importance of discipline and dedication. It also teaches them that there are no excuses when you fail; either the other wres-

tler was better than you or you didn’t train hard enough in practice,” he said. “Success (to me) is not simply winning matches. It’s the ability to train hard all week and then go onto the mat on Saturday and face adversity head on, putting forth your absolute best effort. I feel that anyone who is a true wrestler, and puts forth the time and dedication that it requires will be successful not only on the mat, but in life.”
weight, regardless of age or gender. It doesn’t completely negate the genetic factor, but it definitely evens the odds of a fair match. It also means that a championship at 106 pounds is just as impressive as a championship at the heavyweight level because the winner is the best on that day at his or her weight class. This weekend Kaiserslautern travels to SHAPE while Ramstein is in Stuttgart.

drinking and eating stations along the route. Jan. 25, at 6 p.m., the event will officially start with Wine Princess Nathalie greeting the guests and a local music group performing next to the historical town hall. Then a torch hike will lead interested participants from the Baroque town hall from 1732 to stand no. 1. The torch sale will begin at 5:15 p.m. right near the town hall. On all three days of the event, local vintners will present various red wines such as Dornfelder, CabernetSauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Dorsa, Cabernet Mietos, Saint Laurent, Portugieser and Spaetburgunder in their wineries and at stands. To be able to
warm up, Gluehwein (heated red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon sticks) will also be served. Visitors get to taste a variety of food specialties — meat dumplings with horseradish sauce, potato soup, dampfnudeln, potato dumplings with mushrooms, pulled pork, rumpsteak with onions, game specialites, red wine onion soup, fresh oysters, lobster, scampis with spaghetti, salmon, spinach dumplings with cheese sauce, bratwurst, pea soup and Hungarian goulash soup. Desserts will include hot chocolate cake with red wine plums, red wine cake and red wine muffins. Food and drink stands will
be open 6 to 10 p.m. Jan. 25, and 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 26 and 27. Traditionally on that weekend, the Freinsheim soccer club will sponsor a 10-kilometer peoples’ run to and around the Oschelkopf vineyard. The run will start at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 27 at the club’s restaurant Harmonie on Dackenheimer Strasse 40 in 67251 Freinsheim. Starting fee is €5 if registering in advance at www.br-timing.de. Registration will be possible until 30 minutes prior to the run and costs €8.

Survivors Guide to Recycling by Vincent Jassak MilitaryinGermany.com
The Black Bin (Restmüll): This container is meant for what is considered general garbage. The general rule is that items placed in here are no longer usable and not recyclable. This includes: vacuum cleaner bags, used diapers, raw meats and food, worn-out shoes and clothing, cigarette butts, kitty litter and dog waste, soiled paper, old pots and dishes, toothbrushes, etc. As you can see, there is very little that should go in this container. This container is collected every two weeks, alternating with the brown Bio bin.
The Brown Bin (Bioabfälle) : This bin is meant for organic or biodegradable waste. Here’s what goes in this bin: grass clippings and weeds, coffee filters, tea bags, vegetable and fruit scraps, eggshells, bread, used paper towels and napkins, nut shells, banana and citrus peels and leftover cooked food. This container is also collected every two weeks, alternating with the black bin. Summertime can be interesting as this bin sits in the heat; so you can wrap any left over food and meats in used paper towels to keep the bin smelling more fresh (sort of )! Remember, raw foods go in the black bin.
The Blue Bin (Papiertonne): This container is meant for most paper products. This includes: newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, books, envelopes, file folders and items like cereal boxes. This bin may get full quickly, especially around your PCS time. This also takes some planning and breakdown of boxes since it is only picked up once a month. In my house, we tend to fill this before the 4 weeks are over.

Recycling can be one of the more daunting tasks when living in Germany. Here is a cheat sheet about Kaiserslautern County’s recycling “rules.” If you live outside of the county, your regulations may be different. Please check with your local government office to verify what you need to do. Basically, in Kaiserslautern, there are five different types of recycling. Four of these five, waste, paper, compost, plastics and metal, are usually taken care of at your home location and the fifth, glass, is done in a centralized area in town. Here, by name and color, are some dos and don’ts about what belongs in each bin:

They are free and, for us, are used for a majority of our trash. Here’s what goes in them: any plastic bottles, plastic wrappers, plastic containers (yogurt, margarine, etc.), any styrofoam packaging, any metal food or drink cans, any aluminum food containers and foil, including yogurt tops, bottle caps, empty spray cans, juice and milk cartons. Things like sponges, old CDs, outdoor furni-
ture or plastic toys do not go here. They should go in the black bin. These bags are collected the same day as the black bin. Glass: In your area, you will see dome-shaped containers, usually in groups of three. These are meant for glass. The three containers correspond to the color of the glass: brown, clear and green. This is usually an every-other-week trip for us, so it is not too bad. As you may have noticed, glass is used more often here;
make sure the container you have does not have a pfand. This is a bottle deposit that you paid when you bought the item. It is usually applied to beer and water bottles and dairy products like yogurt.

HOW MINDFUL MEDITATION WILL HELP YOU STAY HEALTHY IN THE COLD

attention to the details of our experience as it unfolds.
Winter is here! Worried that the cold might get you and your family sick more often?
So how do you practice mindful meditation? Here are a few steps to get you started.
One thing that definitely makes us sick more often is our body’s response to stress and anxiety. Obviously, having to deal with the holidays can make us stressed out. This stress directly impacts your body and your general health. The better that we are equipped to deal with stress-induced anxiety, the better off our health will be.
1. pick your location. Scene and setting are very important for getting the appropriate mood for mindful meditation. We recommend finding a quiet room with a candlet and a cushion to sit on.
One great way to deal with stress is the process of mindful meditation. Mindful meditation, instead of other forms of meditation that focuses your attention outward, commands us to pay attention to the present. It commands us to be aware of what’s going on inside our bodies and our minds. The goal is to simply acknowledge the reality inside ourselves, instead of constantly focusing on how to change our situation. Once you move from the tendency to want to change things to the point of accepting your true and ultimate reality, you get closer to the goals of mindful meditation. This gives us the opportunity to see and appreciate ourselves for who we really are. Mindfulness simply provides nonjudgmental
2. Sit in a posture that is upright but not rigid. Cross your legs in a comfortable position in front of you. 3. Sit there and pay attention to your breath as it comes in and out of you. Focus on keeping your breathing as steady as possible.
go longer. After getting some practice, this meditation should help you reduce anxiety and stress in your life, which will also help you feel more healthy. Two great apps that can help you get into mediation are Headspace and Calm, which offer guided meditations with different topics such as health, gratitude, productivity and more. They both offer free trial periods! There is a common misconception that meditation is the absence of thoughts when really it is more about the recognition of thoughts and the ability to put them aside for the few moments of calm you’re going for.
While it does take practice, there is no such thing as ‘can’t do it’ or a wrong time to start. You’ll find it gets easier with each practice and even on days you have trouble focusing, the mantras that will be read on the apps mentioned above will provide food for thought no matter the mood you’re in. Try it now and let us know how you like it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Author Profile: Steve Bronson in association with Doctors Imaging. They’re radiologists concerned about quality patient care and the physical fitness of our nation’s veterans. More information can be found at www.doctorsimaging.com/.
4. Pay attention to your thoughts (and they will come!). Instead of focusing on any particular thought, let the thought enter and leave your consciousness naturally. 5. Finally, remind yourself that you need to be inwardly compassionate. You are trying the best that you can, and being hard on yourself will get you nowhere, and will lead to anxiety. Start by doing this for fifteen minutes at a time, and then see if you can

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN AN ALPINE ADVENTURE
Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com Located in the heart of the Bavarian State, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the must-see destinations that should be on your itinerary whilst based in Germany. The town has a long history of association with the American Military (the Marshall Center and Edelweiß Lodge are both based there), which means you can expect a very warm Bavarian welcome when you visit.
Photo by Dontsov Evgeny / Shutterstock.com
History For hundreds of years, Garmisch town towards the west was fundamentally separate from Partenkirchen town towards the east. Essentially, Partenkirchen evolved from Partanum, a Roman town lying on the Venice-Augsburg trade route with its first mention in history around 15 A.D. In fact, the main street of Partenkirchen, Ludwigsstrasse, follows the original road created by Romans. About 800 years later, Garmisch came into the picture as the German District
or Germaneskau, indicating that the Teutonic tribe might have settled towards the valley’s west, but it’s not until the 20th Century that the two separate towns would be connected as one. The discovery of the New World or the Americas just before the 16th century made shipping the main thing and overland trade suffered a sharp decline. For Garmisch and neighbouring Partenkirchen, the region was plunged into hundreds of years of economic depression as much as the floor of the valley was hard to farm due to being swampy. Lynxes, wolves and bears were constantly threatening livestock and the region was plagued with periodic epidemics such as bubonic plague outbreaks. As the fortunes of the area were affected by crop failure and disease, witch hunting grew out of the engulfing misery and notable witch hunts, trials and barbaric executions followed between 1589 and 1596. In fact, 10 percent of the GarmischPartenkirchen population at the time or 63 people to be precise, were either garroted or burned alive. A gruesome history indeed! The Winter Olympics of 1936 Both Garmisch and Partenkirchen remained very separate right until that time when Adolf Hitler entered the scene and forced the mayors of the regions in 1935 to combine their two respective markets in anticipation of the forthcoming Winter Olympic
games of 1936. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is famously remembered for hosting the Winter Olympic Games of 1936 where for the first time in history, alpine skiing was featured. Today, lots of alpine and Nordic world cup ski tournaments are held in the region, mostly on the Kandahar Olympic run situated on the Alpspitze mountain. Every New Year’s Day in Garmisch-Partenkirchen there is a ski jump competition within the Four Hills Tournament. It goes without saying that over the years Garmisch-Partenkirchen has always been favored as the top holiday spot in Germany when it comes to hiking, snowboarding and skiing as a result of the region’s great skiing areas, especially the Zugspitze and the Classic Area (Hausberg and Alpspitze Mountains). Zugspitze
Photo by Noppasin Wongchum / Shutterstock.com
At 2,962 meters, the Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain and reaching the top requires the use of a
number of lifts or the funicular railway. The border with Austria runs right across the peak and it is possible to go up from Germany, and descend using another cable car to end up in a nearby town across the border in Austria. To enjoy the visit to the top, plan to do it on a clear day otherwise you could end up with zero visibility. The skiing on Zugpsitze is fantastic on a good day and there are very few queues for the lifts. There are two blue learning slopes but no actually nursery slopes so it’s best to be able to do some basic snow ploughing before heading up here to progress. Zugspitze is a glacier which means you can ski on it quite early until fairly late in the season, but it is equally beautiful to visit during the summer too. There are a number of summer hiking trails that lead to the top (the last part is actually a more like a technical climb so many people take a short cable car for this bit). To enjoy the thrill of going up the tallest peak in German, prepare for a two day hike to reach the summit. There are basic lodgings and food on a number of trails but its important to book in advance and carry your own sleeping bags etc. Climbing and hiking this summit is an attraction that draws tourists from around the world to Zugspitze.
