THE HOUSING HYPE TAKE NOTE

KMC Housing Community SAVES ENERGY

Energy conservation and climate change has become a constant discussion over the past few years. So, why should you be passionate about conserving energy in your home? Well, this boils down to two fundamental reasons: to save money and to reduce the amount of damage caused to the environment. Whether you live on-base or in our local communities, here are some easy ways to save energy costs while living in your home.

KMC Housing “Energy Conservation Tips”

• Use sunlight whenever available, switch off lights when not required and adjust heating thermostat to lower temperature when you’re not home.

• Draw your curtains at dusk to retain heat in your home, and make sure the curtains, or any furniture, are not blocking your radiators.

• Dress for the weather. When you are at home, dress in warm clothing in the winter and cooler clothing in the summer to stay comfortable.

• Turn off the lights when they are not in use.

• Set your refrigerator temperature to the manufacturer’s recommendation to avoid excessive cooling and wasting energy.

• Turn water off when shaving, washing hands, brushing teeth.

• Unplug unused electronics

• Conserve energy by not leaving electrical items on standby…prevent further waste by not keeping laptops and mobile phones charging unnecessarily.

• Take a shower rather than a bath — showers use a lot less water.

• Defrost frozen food in the fridge overnight, as this will reduce the cooking time.

• Keep inside doors closed if they lead to an unheated room, to prevent cold air mixing with warmed air and flowing around the house.

• Dripping taps, if you live on-base, call the Housing Maintenance (Comm: 06371-463-9510) for a fix! If you are off-base, talk with your Landlord.

• Winter tip for base townhouse families…when temperatures are below freezing; ensure the outside technical room is always closed. As a reminder, the maintenance responsibility for technical rooms belongs to the Housing Maintenance Contractor, Vectrus. For repairs, call Comm Phone: 06371-463-9510.

• During the winter months, cover your outside water faucets to prevent bursting water pipes!

ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK

» Reducing the amount of air that leaks in and out of your home is a costeffective way to cut heating costs, improve durability, increase comfort, and create a healthier indoor environment.

» Weatherstripping is a simple and effective air-sealing technique that offers quick returns on investment. This method is used to seal components that move, such as doors and operable windows.

Did you know, that U.S. Air Forces in Europe is older than the Air Force? Established on Jan. 19, 1942, USAFE’s initial designation was Eighth Air Force and arrived in the UK in June 1942 to command the strategic bombing campaign against Germany. Brig. Gen. Asa N. Duncan served as the first commander, followed by then-Maj. Gen. Carl A. Spaatz. Other notable commanders include Gen. Curtis LeMay, Gen. Ira Eaker, and Gen. John P. Jumper.

Although USAFE started out as Eighth Air Force, the current Eighth Air Force in Global Strike

Command derives its history from the VIII Bomber Command. The U.S. Army Air Forces began using major commands on Feb. 22, 1944, when Eighth Air Force was redesignated as United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe and VIII Bomber Command was redesignated Eighth Air Force. USAFE has been stationed in Europe since June 18, 1942, and in Germany since Sept. 28, 1945, including what is now Lucius D. Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden from 1945-1973 and Ramstein AB since 1973.

Ryder noted that Ukrainian troops have arrived at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where they are receiving training on the Patriot missile system. The training, which will last several months, involves 90 to 100 Ukrainians.

Separately, this week, some 600 National Guardsmen, Soldiers, Marines and airmen are en route to northern Michigan to take part in the winter portion of Exercise Northern Strike 23. The Michigan Army National Guard will host the exercise from Jan. 20 to 29, at the Northern Michigan All-Domain Warfighting Center.

Now in its 10th year, Northern Strike allows active duty, reserve and Guard units to challenge themselves in near-arctic conditions while training to meet the objectives of the Defense Department’s Arctic Strategy, Ryder said.

Participants will battle wind, snow and sub-zero temperatures while using skis, snowmobiles and snowshoes to meet their training objectives, he said.

“As the National Defense Strategy makes clear, the changing climate is creating new corridors of potential future interaction in the Arctic region. Exercises like Northern Strike help ensure our service members are ready to meet those future challenges head-on,” Ryder said.

Later this month, Austin will travel to the Indo-Pacific region to meet with his counterparts from South Korea and the Philippines.

“These two critical allies continue to bolster our defense part -

nerships. This upcoming trip is a reaffirmation of our deep commitment to working in concert with allies and partners to chart our shared vision to preserve a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Ryder said.

Local BSEP helps Soldiers raise GT scores, improve job performance

when re-testing on the Armed Forces Classification Test.

The Basic Skills Education Program has achieved an exceptional success rate and is ready to offer classes in new locations.

The overall General Technical score achieved by service members attending classes at the Rhine Ordnance Barracks BSEP in 2022 was 128.

“A good score is 110 or above,” said Amenia McKen, BSEP education counselor.

“This score gives them a good spectrum of jobs and options they can consider and apply to while they serve in the military.”

McKen said that many Soldiers, when they first join the military, don’t have good GT scores.

“They usually score between 90 and 105,” she said. “That can really limit what fields they can get into.”

This is where BSEP comes into play.

BSEP is one of four Functional Academic Skills Training programs. It is teacher-facilitated and it is designed to help Soldiers raise their GT scores

It can also help Soldiers establish eligibility for commissioning programs, improve basic skills for college courses, and increase chances for promotion.

The course is very fast paced, and it is up to each individual to put in the effort and get as much as they can out of the class.

“We start off with the basics, and every day we build upon that until Soldiers are ready,” McKen said. “We work with them on three general areas: Word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, and arithmetic reasoning. However, we are very heavy in math,” she added.

A total of 17 classes were offered in 2022, providing instruction for 127 service members. Out of all participants, 115 of them raised their GT score, with 77 of them going above 110.

The program is available to Army, National Guard, and Army Reserve Soldiers. It consists of 40 hours faceto-face learning, and an additional 20 hours of online, individual instruction.

Classes have 10-12 participants, and are scheduled at least once a month. They are announced via email

two or three weeks before the start date to give enough time to participants to sign up and get their commander’s signature.

Even though only one instructor is assigned to each class, McKen said that she and the other instructors always work together to ensure the students get the best experience.

“Each one of us has a different teaching style,” said Emerald Schumacher, BSEP instructor. “We all teach from the same curriculum, but we all bring our own teaching perspective.”

Any Soldier, regardless of their rank, is encouraged to take the class if they would like an opportunity to boost both their GT and Skill Technical scores. ST scores include everything that is in the GT plus general science knowledge.

“Our program is very rigorous,” said Schumacher. “We teach service members everything they need to know, but in the end it’s really up to the individual to show dedication.”

Terry Taylor, BSEP instructor, said that an active participation is required to be successful in the course.

“Service members should expect to have homework every night,” she added. “You’ve got to do the work and be dedicated.”

Sometimes life can be overwhelming, and the BSEP instructors urge all future participants to sign up only if they think they can commit 100 percent.

“BSEP instructors help Soldiers change their lives for the best,” said Taylor.

The program aims at promoting retention, increasing re-enlistment options, and improving job performance.

Soldiers interested in raising their GT score may contact their local education center for any questions on how to sign up for BSEP.

US Army equipment arrives with economic opportunity in Greece

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command received more than 2,400 armored vehicles and equipment items into the European theater during simultaneous port operations in Alexandroupoli and Thessaloniki, Greece, and Gdynia, Poland, to support an Atlantic Resolve rotational deployment in November. Even as 21st TSC staged the equipment for rapid onward movement across the European continent, Area Support Group Balkans, 21st TSC, 409th Contracting Support Brigade and the U.S. Consulate General, Thessaloniki partnered with the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce and Industry to welcome Greek-owned businesses’ support of U.S. military missions, and ensure they had access to associated economic opportunities.

More than 100 area vendors attended the November 28 Thessaloniki vendor outreach fair to learn about the U.S. Army procurement process. Fair presenter Maj. Luis Palma, Balkans Regional Contracting Office Chief, 409th CSB, said the workshop aimed to give local businesses a pathway into U.S. contracting systems.

“The Greek population directly benefits as each company eligible to compete on U.S. Army contract actions will provide the population of Greece a steady and reliable source of income as our posture grows or is sustained in support of Atlantic Resolve,” said Palma.

Data compiled by 266th Finance Support Center indicates the U.S. awarded $2 billion to Greek vendors since the first Atlantic Resolve rotation in 2014, and economic opportunities are expected to increase.

Isaac Hansen-Joseph, economic officer, U.S. Consulate General, Thessaloniki, said the workshop reflects the importance the U.S. government places on the growth

and success in the region’s economy. “A stronger economy for northern Greece is good for Greece, it’s good for Europe and it’s good for the transatlantic community,” said Hansen-Joseph. “Partnering together for economic prosperity is part of our shared story based on shared ideals including a dedication to democracy and free enterprise.”

Hellenic Army Col. Vasilios Yaglis said previous workshops have benefitted local communities and the military operations they’ve hosted. “We’ve been doing this at Alexandroupoli for years now,” said Yaglis. “This meeting was helpful for [Thessaloniki businesses] because they received all the guidance they need to get registered and examine the platforms the U.S. government uses. This is always good, to get local business involved with the military operation. We have the approval of the community because they gain something. It’s a win-win situation.”

ASG Balkans Commander Col. Matthew DiNenna said planned increased transit of U.S. armed forces materials and personnel through Greece means more business oppor-

tunities for the local economy. Creating a robust roster of local vendors helps the U.S. Army deliver higher quality products and services at lower costs.

He used logistic support areas, where Soldiers live during temporary duty assignments, as an example. While the Hellenic army has always made space available to U.S. troops when needed, historically the U.S. Army would set up tents for 30 to 40 days, only to be break them down and contract for them to be put back up months later.

To improve temporary living facilities and cost efficiency, ASG Balkans and 409th CSB are looking to establish those types of contracts for much longer duration. DiNenna said the vendor fair was the latest step in that direction.

“With Soldiers rotating there every other month, let’s put up more permanent structures and improve the [Soldiers’] quality of life,” said DiNenna. “As opposed to putting a tent up for 40 days, we’re looking at pre-fabricated modular type structures. For what they charge to put up tents for Soldiers to sleep in cots,

I can probably get a better product at a reduced cost and improve the quality of life. My end-state is getting soldiers off the cots.”

DiNenna added they are also working on plans for morale, welfare and recreation facilities at the LSAs which are routinely stood up near the ports of Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli as troops from the 16th Sustainment Brigade and incoming units conduct reception, staging and onward movement activities to support the deployment of ready, combat-credible U.S. forces to Europe.

“The continued increase of U.S. and NATO presence at Alexandroupoli has leveraged positive impacts to the community, bolstering the economy to include

jobs,” said Andre Cameron, Director, Transportation Corps Detachment, Eastern Mediterranean-Greece, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. “U.S. military operations have supported the continued growth of the city to become a critical strategic node for transport and military logistics.”

While simultaneous port operations in Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli in November demonstrated a high level of interoperability between the U.S. and Greece, the vendor outreach fair in Thessaloniki signified a commitment to continue to strengthen the relationship through military, diplomatic and economic joint ventures, according to fair coordinators.

Experts reveal New Year’s resolution success techniques

The new year is often viewed as an opportunity to make a fresh start, many times with a focus on being healthier, maybe losing a few pounds.

However, Laura Bottoms, a chief at the Ireland Army Health Clinic Nutrition Care Services on Fort Knox in Kentucky, said good intentions sometimes end up as failed resolutions if the right mindset isn't there from the get-go.

“We come out of the holidays where we’ve been indulging, off routine and off schedule,” said Bottoms. “Then, it’s January 1st and you’re trying to restart with all

this pressure.”

The first step toward success, according to Bottoms, is first simply to reestablish a normal routine rather than try to create an entirely new one out of the gate. She said it's common to make the mistake of going straight into big changes on Day One.

“We often feel so far off track after the first of the year,” said Bottoms. “It’s almost like a slingshot effect, where we feel like the only thing to do is go super gungho the other way.”

With so many treats and goodies readily available during the holiday season, Bottoms noted many people tend to beat themselves up

mentally for choosing to indulge — something that can cause its own issues.

“There’s a lot of shame and guilt about experiences over the holidays,” said Bottoms. “That really sets people up for going to that extreme.”

Internal behavioral health consultant Margaret Baker agreed with Bottoms, highlighting the detriment negativity can have.

“Shaming yourself in any way doesn’t lead to good lasting results,” said Baker. “You might see some growth initially, but you end up self-sabotaging at some point.”

Both professionals emphasized the importance of granting personal grace when working toward a new diet or exercise goal.

“Nobody is perfect,” said Baker. “When you’re beating yourself up for not being perfect, that’s when you stop seeing the progress.”

Baker said there’s another common pitfall for many attempting to follow through with a resolution.

“I see a lot of rigid thinking about the new year,” said Baker. “There are these ‘all or nothing’ behaviors like really intense diet or exercise, and general lifestyle goals without any built-in moderation or understanding that life happens.

Inevitably, something happens and it completely derails people.”

A good rule of thumb with new goals is to be flexible, according to

Baker. She said to stay away from overly specific objectives, especially when it comes to the scales.

“Sometimes we get very fixated on numerical goals,” said Baker.

“The problem with those is that they only feel good when we’re right on target.”

One way Baker said to help allow more flexibility is to always have a backup plan.

“Give yourself tiered options,” said Baker. “Maybe your first choice would be to mealprep or go to the gym after work – but recognize that may not always be able to happen and have a second option.”

Another helpful tip for success Baker offered was to openly share your resolutions with others.

“Having your system buy into your goal is really important on a lot of levels,” said Baker. “If you can help people see how they can

support you, it will help you build confidence in succeeding.”

Bottoms added that if the people closest to you don’t necessarily provide the amount of support or enthusiasm you feel you need, don’t be afraid to seek encouragement elsewhere.

As accomplishments are achieved, Baker said it’s also important to pat yourself on the back.

“Give yourself goal-focused rewards,” said Baker. “You could get yourself new workout gear or go over to [your favorite smoothie bar] after the gym — something that feels like it’s reinforcing the goal you have.”

Fort Knox offers its community members a variety of helpful tools for those who have a health-related goal. Bottoms urged anyone looking for guidance to take advantage of the many opportunities available in their area.

US, UK put emphasis on logistics to prepare for multinational movements

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command invited British Armed Forces to participate in a two-week joint training on NATO logistics tool, Logistics Functional Area Services, to prepare for Defender Europe 23 on Panzer Kaserne in Kaiserslautern, Dec. 5-16, 2022.

The three-phase training included 15 U.K. and U.S. military members and began with online instruction. Phase two was a twoweek course to study a nation’s data used in a multinational setting at Royal Air Force Brize Norton in October 2022.

The two forces got to know each other well after four weeks of inperson training.

“We both see how our nations operate,” U.S. Army Capt. Brandon Grifford, transportation planner, 21st TSC.

Grifford said group training influences planning and improves logistics by understanding the strategy behind other countries’ operations and methods of movement.

“Having these combined trainings we build both relationships but also confidence.”

According to Grifford, offer-

ing bilateral courses such as this spreads LOGFAS skills to more 21st TSC personnel and builds capabilities.

Ian Garnett, LOGFAS instructor, NEXUS Lifecycle Management, said he taught students to combine data and setup deployment strategies used at the national and international logistics command and control.

LOGFAS is the ultimate interoperable logistics tool. According to Garnett, LOGFAS allows partners to obtain information about surface movement in regards to schedules, details of cargo and routes and manipulate those details to utilize it for their operations.

Garnett explains the importance for logisticians to learn alongside one another.

“The students are able to see in a practical way how each other work for a common objective and to support the mission that has been directed at the political, strategic and operational command levels,” said Garnett.

The upcoming objective is DE 23 and it is approaching quickly. DE 23 is a series of linked U.S. Army Europe and Africa led training exercises scheduled for May and June 2023. It is an immediate response global exercise, focused

on allied forces’ ability to quickly and effectively respond to crisis situations as an interoperable, multinational team.

DE 23 is a kaleidoscope of movements and LOGFAS organizes those movements for reports and analysis.

LOGFAS allows NATO to work as one force and the coordination between personnel is key says Garnett. Aside from the technical tools Garnett is teaching, there is a connection between the students that is developing.

“The relationships fostered through this combined training can improve coordination as they work together during the Defender exercise and any other future operation,” said Garnett.

British Army Maj. Richard Whetter, training requirements authority, defense support, said the training was good preparation for DE 23.

“It’s a much better mechanism to learn it with another nation," said Whetter.

“There’s always been a special relationship between the U.K. and the U.S.,” said Whetter. “We look forward to working with 21st TSC in time. Maybe this could be the seeds of closer ties between our great armies.”

SkillsUSA Europe soaring to new heights (literally)

The 2023 Skills European Regional Championships is about to kick off its sixth season of exciting CTESTEM challenges for DODEA Europe East high schools. On Feb. 1, AFCEA Chapter 158 will once again host their SkillsUSA contests with opportunities to win $16,000 in scholarships and prizes. Finalists of the ten industry-developed contests will receive $1,000, $500 and $100 in award money (per contest, not contestant).

This is the most lucrative SkillsUSA event to date. For the organizers of the event however, it’s about the challenge, not the awards that is so very special. This year’s event will include two brand new contests which will take STEM to a whole new level. The 2023 SkillsUSA event will host for the first time, a new DOD STEM Challenge requiring students to design atmospheric experiments to be engineered and integrated into a HighAltitude Balloon (HAB). The top three finalists will have their experiments flown into near space where they will capture necessary data required to complete the experiment and submit their analysis for final review and contest placement.

Taking STEM one step further, SkillsUSA Europe has partnered with Deutsche Telekom who will host both the new STEM Debate and Marketing contest. The STEM Debate will offer students an opportunity to go head-

GACO CORNER

to-head against other student teams where an in-depth knowledge of a particular STEM theme will be necessary to move forward in a tournament style competition.

In addition to the new STEM contests, AFCEA Chapter 158 will continue to sponsor eight critical industry relevant CTE contests. Students can compete in more than one contest, and can compete both individually or as a team-of-two (contest specific). AFCEA is proud to announce the following 2023 SkillsUSA challenges:

• STEM Challenge

• STEM Debate

• Cybersecurity

• Computer Programming

• Engineering

• Advertising Design

• Nursing Assistant (Ramstein only)

• Photojournalism

• Marketing

• Video Production

Registration deadline for the DOD STEM Challenge and Engineering contest is Jan. 31. Registration for all remaining contests is Feb. 8. Contest details and previous student submissions can be accessed via the AFCEA SkillsUSA registration website: https:// kaiserslautern.afceachapters.org/SkillsUSA

64 Medical Detachment Veterinary Support Services conducts laboratory exercise

The 64th Medical Detachment Veterinary Support Services held a laboratory exercise on Rhine Ordnance Barracks from Dec. 13-15; where Soldiers were able to develop their skills and expand their knowledge in their work field.

LABEX events are held to not only benefit the Soldiers but also allow their supervisors to see what could be improved for the coming future.

“We are hoping to use this training to prepare us for our validation exercise in February,” said Staff Sgt. Ruth Barajas, 64th MDVSS food procurement laboratory team non-commissioned officer in charge. “We hope to validate not only personnel but all team equipment to move towards participation in global health engagements with other European countries.”

The event was conducted over three days with a new task each day. On the first day, the Soldiers went through chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear detection and decontamination. The second day, substance sample collection, lab submissions and sample plating was demonstrated and practiced. On the third and final day, Soldiers received their sample results and conducted a presentation to leaders.

“I hope they have gained a greater knowledge regarding proper laboratory practices, procedures and will be able to successfully apply them during real world events,” said Barajas.

Leaders want their Soldiers to succeed and gain more understanding of what it is they do when it’s time for their skills to be tested in real world events.

“They benefit from this because they are more prepared and more

confident to carry out their job responsibilities more independently, more competently and more professionally in my opinion,” said Sgt. Felicia Silva, 64th MDVSS FPLT team leader. “Because we’re always rotating and doing different missions, we don’t have time to think to ourselves and say, ‘Hey, are we really proficient at our job?’ So this type of training provides proficiency, efficiency, skill development, confidence and overall professionalism.”

The Soldiers see the benefit for themselves more than anything, from learning new techniques, to seeing things that they’ve never used before. There’s benefit for both leader and Soldier.

“We’re able to give the commanders of the unit the information they need because we have a field lab set up, it gives us the utility in the field to allow us to test samples and relay that informa-

tion to those commanders,” said Sgt. Deonte Collins, 64th MDVSS, team 5 NCO. “It gives us the opportunity to give them the knowledge on any situation with the food that they’re eating and any possibility of contamination if need be.”

There’s a lot of coordination that goes into these events. Leaders have to communicate with other units to coordinate the needs of the exercise and be able to receive the supplies needed for proper training.

“We had to go through the 512th Field Hospital to get certain equipment needed to get our generators hooked up, our heaters working, we had to work with the Training Aids Services Center in Kaiserslautern to get lab equipment as well,” said Silva. “We had to work with the dining facility here to make sure we were able to conduct our inspection and take live samples from their facility to be plated in our lab. As well as

CBRN personnel so they can give training on how to properly put on mission oriented protective posture gear and decontaminate food.”

Collins said that he hopes more events will be held in the near future because he can see the huge upside to it, not only for himself but for his fellow Soldiers.

“I think the training has been interesting with doing new things, from the CBRN and decontaminating food in our MOPP gear in a tactical portion, to the lab portion which will be more hands-on, so it’s two different dynamics from our job,” said Collins. “I think this will help the unit become more productive and allow us to get a lot more done in more time.”

The LABEX allows leaders to see the benefits that can be gained such as influencing other units to take notice and noticing Soldiers reactions from training events like this.

Fun activities that improve child development

Did you know that simple, active play helps your child’s development? It’s true. In addition to basic fitness, active play improves concentration, coordination, learning, social skills and much more. Though your family may already have some favorite activities, see below for more ideas and how they help with development.

Play ball

It’s easy to see how a game of catch can improve hand-eye coordination. Ball play also helps with reasoning, balance and vision. It also accomplishes the difficult task of eccentric strengthening (strengthening with a controlled release rather than lifting) of large and small muscle groups.

Tips: Mix it up. Try balls of different sizes, textures and weights. Add a Frisbee or an American football into the mix. Rather than tossing back and forth, throw or kick to a target. Get sporty: Dribble a basketball with the hands or a soccer ball with the feet, swing the baseball bat or the hockey stick, even work in a

game of golf. Children of any age are welcome on the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Baumholder accom-

panied by a responsible adult. Club rentals are available for players as young as three; teens 16 and up can golf on their own. The Woodlawn Golf Course accepts children six and over with their parents. Skills mastered now will prepare your child for team sports later.

Many German communities have special trails and courses for bikes and pedestrians. While there are obvious strength and endurance benefits from bicycling, riding a bike can aid your child’s development in other areas too. Cyclists learn to navigate their communities and care for their equipment. Bicycling is a pre-driving skill as riders learn the rules of the road.

Tips: Look over a map and include your child in planning the route. As children gain experience, see if they can orient to home and other familiar landmarks to improve memory, perception and sense of direction. Being involved in bike maintenance and use of personal safety equipment teaches responsibility, safety, and selfawareness.

We live in an area rich with hiking trails of many lengths and diffi culty levels. In addition to the physical benefits, children learn about themselves and their surroundings when hiking. Because most hikes are low-impact, hiking can incorporate other interests like photography, nature, and history.

Tips: Challenge your child by incorporating side stepping, braiding, or walking backward on the trails. Performing these uncommon motions on uneven surfaces challenges not only coordination but proprioception (knowing where your body is in space) and vestibular (balance) skills. Incorporate learning into your hikes — study plants, weather, bugs, towns… the possibilities are endless. Add a challenge such as a kilometer goal or a certain number of castle ruins to explore. Check out the many barefoot walking trails in the area for warmer months. For older children, consider hiking longer and more challenging routes or even hut-tohut hiking in the Alps.

Fun and games

Laughter, logic and leadership go hand and hand with play. So, jump rope, hula hoop, or pass out the swim noodles and play tag. Overcome obstacles by designing your own obstacle course with everyday items. In addition to balancing, inclines and declines, add stepping on pillows or other soft surfaces to part of the course. This is another way to challenge balance, proprioception and vestibular senses. If the weather won’t cooperate, design an obstacle course inside.

Tips: Let children make-up games, explain the rules, and keep score. Have them design, plan, and build the obstacle courses (check for safety, of course.) Try an outdoor ropes course or go climbing and bouldering. The climbing wall at Outdoor Recreation in the KMCC Mall welcomes families and children as young as two-years old to climb, though they must be sixteen to belay (manage the ropes to support another climber.) Most of all, join in! Kids aren’t the only ones who benefit and learn from active play!

The Department of the Air Force will promote and cultivate a mentoring culture to show Airmen and Guardians how mentoring can help maximize their full potential in January following President Biden’s proclamation on Dec. 30, 2022. The theme this year is: “Love your mentoring journey.”

The DAF values mentorship as an enterprise imperative and is committed to increasing deliberate mentoring for Total Force Airmen and Guardians.

“Love your mentoring journey” means to enjoy the process it takes to form a mutually beneficial mentoring relationship and achieve desired goals. Every Airman and Guardian is unique, and their mentoring journey should be tailored to meet the needs of their specific journey.

Mentoring is a relationship in which knowledge and skills are shared between members in a way where everyone benefits. Often a more senior person is mentoring a junior person, but mentorship can happen between any two individuals. Mentoring will help Airmen and Guardians discover their strengths by achieving their full potential through a structured, trusting mentoring relationship.

As part of National Mentoring Month, the DAF will host a series of virtual, live events focused on

educating Airmen and Guardians on key aspects that influence their mentoring journey, the importance of mentoring, and how to register on the myVector Mentoring platform.

Below are the virtual events scheduled for National Mentoring Month:

• Jan. 23 at 7-9 p.m. EST: Crucial Conversation – Mentoring impact on Diversity and Inclusion (Facebook)

Crucial Conversation is a private social media page that often addresses tough conversation topics from a leadership perspective. They are hosting a virtual panel to discuss the impact that mentoring has on diversity and inclusion. As mentors, we must understand how to connect with and develop diverse Airmen and Guardians to help them reach their highest potential. As mentees, we must help our mentors understand our uniqueness so we can form a stronger mentoring relationship. Our force’s diversity is one of our most powerful weapons and mentoring is a key part of unlocking the potential of each Airman and Guardian from all walks of life as they embark on their mentoring journey.

• Jan. 31 at 11 a.m.-12 p.m. EST Civilian Leadership Development School

– Mentoring in Action (Zoom)

The Civilian Leadership Development School will host a Mentoring Workshop to help build a solid foundation of supervisory skills. Supervisors are often the first level of mentorship, and it is crucial for them to be equipped with the skills needed to help develop the mentoring relationship. Experience a Live Virtual Mentoring Workshop to improve employee performance planning, goals, and outcomes. Meeting ID: 161 366 9742 and Passcode: 690808

• Feb. 1 at 6 – 7 p.m., Us-Mentoring-Us (UMU) –“We Got Next” the Mentee Perspective (Facebook) UMU is a private Facebook page that has been influential in promoting the message of mentoring across the force. The page will be hosting an event where they dive into the mindset of mentees and find out their views on mentorship. Mentees must understand how to be accountable in their mentoring journey to help shape a mentoring relationship that allows them to achieve their life goals.

Many members of the Kaiserslautern American Community, both active duty and family members have found temporary or permanent homes in the area. Some families may also be excited that new members see their first ray of light as a “Landstuhler” during their stay!

Since 1953 more than 55,000 babies of U.S. or German-American parents were born in Landstuhl. Primarily at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or otherwise at Nardini Klinikum/St. Johannis Hospital. According to the Registry Office Landstuhl, there were 780 births in 2020, 761 in 2021 and 758 in 2022, averaging a little over two newborns per day.

Some of these children visited Department of Defense Education Activities schools, eventually moved to the U.S. with their parents or remained in country. Many of them later joined the Armed Forces themselves and returned on a tour back to their roots. Others remained in the U.S., pursued civilian lives and careers in politics, the medical field, scientific research, in the broadcasting and show business or as sports stars.

We would like to present a few people born in Landstuhl who eventually

A star is born in Landstuhl

became rather famous in their various fields. You may already be familiar with some of them, but take the opportunity to get to know a few more.

A virologist, an anthropologist and a politician

To start off, Jeffrey Taubenberger, a prominent virologist was born in 1961. Together with another scientist, he was the first to sequence the genome of the influenza virus which caused the 1918 pandemic called the Spanish Flu. This is a process of determining the entirety of the DNA sequence of an organism's genome at a single time.

Richard McElreath, born in 1973, became a Professor of Anthropology and is now the Director of Human Behavior, Ecology and Culture at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.

On the other hand, David Cheston Rouzer, born in 1972, pursued a career in politics and since January 2015 he has represented the State of North Carolina as a Republican.

Life is a ballgame

Some sports heroes may be better known, such as Rob Awalt, born in 1964. He was a tight end American football player for the National Football League for seven years and then drafted to the Phoenix Cardinals.

In 1990 he switched to the Dallas Cowboys, then to the Buffalo Bills and played in the Super Bowls in the years 1992 and 1993.

Reggie Williams is another wellknown American football player born in 1983. He played wide receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the National Football League. He had his best professional season in 2007 with 38 catches for 629 yards and 11 touchdowns. In addition to his sports career, he majored in psychology.

Shawn Bradley, born in 1972 as son of a U.S. soldier and German mother, became a prominent basketball player. From 1993 to 2005 he played in 875 games in the National Basketball Association, mainly for the Dallas Mavericks. At a height of 2.29 m (7.5 ft) he is one of the tallest players ever and finally ended his sports career after an accident in 2021.

Josh Wicks, born in 1983, began his soccer career with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the United Soccer League First Division. He then switched to the Portland Timbers. In later years he played in several soccer teams in Finland, Sweden and Iceland, leading the teams to various championships.

The youngest sports star was born in 1991. Aaron Samuel Altherr, was born as the son of an American activeduty mother and a German father,

who was a soccer player. Although he had a talent for both soccer and basketball, he opted for baseball in his late high school years. He then played on various U.S. teams and due to his country of origin, Altherr was qualified to successfully compete in the German National Baseball Team in the year 2013.

Landstuhl rocks

On another key, Rob Kelly Thomas was born in 1972. At the age of 13 he decided to become a rock star and visited his first Genesis concert during the “Invisible Touch Tour.” He was the lead singer of the rock band Match Box Twenty. His first success as a solo artist was in 1999 with the single “Smooth” in conjunction with Santana, which made it to first place in the U.S. billboard charts. In 2001 he was entered into the South Carolina Music and Entertainment Award Hall of Fame as the youngest artist ever.

There is no business like show business

Heather De Lisle, born in 1976, is the daughter of American Armed Forces Network DJ Rik De Lisle, and mainly grew up in West Berlin. Her first public moderation was at AFN Berlin at the age of 15 and she was first on television at the age of 18. When AFN Berlin closed in 1995 she

worked for “Deutsche Welle” and since the year 2000 she has been a foreign correspondent for ABC News radio New York reporting from Berlin. She also featured in numerous German political talk shows.

The television series “Roots” in the late 1970s and several Star Trek series and movies awarded fame to Le Var Burton, born as Levardis Robert Burton in 1957, as the last of our celebrities. Burton is not only a famous actor, but was also host to the PBS Kids educational televion series called “Reading Rainbow“ for more than 23 years (1983 – 2006). Older readers may recall his role as “Kunta Kinte“ in the series “Roots“ in which he played a slave in the southern states in the 1860’s. Younger folks may better know him as Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987 – 1994) and various other movies.

Landstuhl may well bring about further celebrities and famous people in the future, but in any case every child born in Landstuhl is definitely a genuine shining star for the parents, siblings and friends of the newborn.

Be sure to take the appropriate steps to register your newborn child properly to avoid hassles when applying for a passport. For details, see below.

LRMC Employee recognized with Star Award

Arimiyao Yacoubou, a Logistics Supply Systems Analyst at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, was recently recognized by the Defense Health Agency for transitioning LRMC and Army Health Clinics from Defense Medical Logistics Standard Support to a single, web-based application.

According to the DHA, while DMLSS has provided excellent medical logistics support for the past 20 years, a technical refresh was needed to improve the user experience and ensure system availability.

Yacoubou, who has worked at LRMC for more than a dozen years, was responsible for the transition of seven geographically separated sites, to the “Amazon-like” LogiCole, which is slated to fully

replace DMLSS operations by 2024.

“I establish and approve user accounts, conduct initial and sustainment DMLSS and LogiCole training for LRMC Medical Treatment Facility personnel in Germany, Italy, and Belgium to ensure continuity of operations and compliance with DHA policies and procedures,” said Yacoubou, a German National and native of the West African nation, Togo. “The LogiCole program is more user friendly and will streamline processes for customers.”

Since arriving to Germany in 1995, Yacoubou has worked in various positions for the U.S. in Europe, including the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Center-Europe and the now defunct, U.S. Army Hospital in Heidelberg. His experience managing the logistical demands of the

CROSSWORD

U.S. Army’s medical operations in Europe, spans for years and across technologies, including theater-wide applications, and local accounts.

“Mr. Yacoubou stepped up to learn and complete the necessary requirements for the new DHA Medical Logistics Logicole Program. As a systems access manager for LRMC he is building a local platform to get local users on board with the New Equipment Request process,” said Sgt. Maj. Christine Collins, senior enlisted leader at DHA, medical logistics. “Additionally, as the DMLSS systems admin, he has worked with multiple locations to make sure that the recent DMLSS upgrade was completed properly and keep locations like Vicenza, Shape and various other MTFs supported by Landstuhl without unnecessary delays to their medical logistics support.”

Why less sunlight in wintertime can put you at risk of depression

During winter months at Fort Wainwright in Alaska, the sun comes up around 10 a.m. and sets a little bit before 3 p.m. Along with the frigid weather, the extended darkness creates an increased risk of depression and other mental health problems.

That’s why at installations like Fort Wainwright, military officials are acutely aware of the risks of Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD, which is the medical term for a seasonally triggered change in behavior that can affect anyone but especially at higher latitudes where the days are shortest.

SAD can be hard to recognize because its onset is as slow as the changing seasons.

“One of the most challenging things about identifying Seasonal Affective Disorder is that the onset can be very subtle,” said Army Capt. Julie Dederer, a psychologist at Bassett Army Community Hospital at Fort Wainwright near Fairbanks, Alaska.

“This can cause delays in patients identifying that something is wrong, and in accurately identifying it for treatment once the patient does seek treatment for it.”

The problem becomes most acute around this time of year, near the winter solstice, or the northern hemisphere’s shortest day of the year, which usually falls on Dec. 21.

Anyone can be affected each year regardless of latitude.

“SAD can occur regardless of geographic location, especially if people have a history of mental health issues or depression,” said U.S. Public Health Service Officer Lt. Hana Kim, the assistant department head of the outpatient behavioral health department at the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command in Jacksonville, Florida.

There is a relatively high rate of reoccurrence “in that individuals who experience an episode of SAD are significantly more likely to experience another episode the next year,” Dederer said. The good news is that this “provides an opportunity for preventive measures.”

At Fort Wainwright, soldiers can borrow light boxes, which provide broad-spectrum light that mimics daylight. Light boxes are best used in the morning, Kim said.

“For mild to moderate SAD, light box therapy is the first line of therapy,” she said. For more severe cases, antidepressant medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, known as SSRIs, might be prescribed.

Lifestyle changes can help

A good deal of treatment for SAD involves behavioral and lifestyle changes.

There are other contributing factors to SAD and its severity, which can include reduced physi-

cal activity, poor diet, social isolation, and spending less time on enjoyable activities, Dederer said.

To address some of these issues, she recommends:

• Low-fat diets

• Reduced carbohydrates

• Reduced refined sugars

Dederer also suggested lifestyle changes, including:

• Finding new hobbies to stay active in the winter

• Making deliberate efforts to go outside during the daytime

• Opening blinds to increase sun exposure

• Socializing more with family and friends

Additionally, she suggested getting your vitamin D levels checked during the winter. Low vitamin D is a possible medical factor with SAD, although there is no conclusive scientific evidence to support that. Fort Wainwright provides free vitamin D supplements on-post.

Kim emphasized as important “good sleep hygiene — going to bed at the same time every night, no naps, and no caffeine in the afternoon.”

Additionally, she suggested adopting a “generally healthy lifestyle and exercising, which releases good endorphins in the brain and can help counteract any

weight gain caused by overeating, and limiting excess alcohol.”

SAD Education

At Wainwright, the potential for SAD is addressed immediately upon a service member’s arrival, regardless of the time of year.

Wainwright has an outreach component, where behavioral health staff brief every soldier within their first week on base. They discuss challenges in Alaska’s climate and environment, signs of SAD and resources for addressing the condition.

“The hope is that the brief gives soldiers the information to encourage them to be proactive in identifying and preventing SAD symptoms,” Dederer said.

If SAD symptoms are identified in a soldier, the behavioral staff at Bassett “assess the extent to which symptoms might be seasonally driven” and recommend a treatment plan, she added.

SAD and social isolation

“Beware of the challenges in comparing your own needs to those of the people around you,” Dederer said.

“In winter, many people socialize less, which means they interact with their friends less often,” she said.

For instance, “They may believe they are the only one struggling with the ‘winter blues’ and are reluctant to seek help due to stigma. Or they think everyone is experiencing the same thing and there is no reason or benefit to seeking help. Both comparisons can be harmful in preventing someone from seeking help to address their symptoms,” Dederer cautioned.

“The upside is that these interventions are easy to do on your own and accessible to pretty much anyone,” Dederer said.

“The downside however is that the nature of SAD is cyclical — those with SAD have lower energy because of the reduced sunlight exposure, so they spend less time doing activities such as exercising and socializing with friends, and the withdrawal from these activities increases feelings of fatigue and depression, making it harder to put the lifestyle changes in place.”

“The most important thing is to not take it lightly,” Kim said. “Don’t chalk it up to winter blues, especially if you feel this way for more than two weeks.” Since SAD is a subtype of depression, it can lead to more severe depression and suicidal ideation.

“There are good treatment options for SAD, so reach out.”

sleep in the toasty cocoon of your blanket.

But you’re not a grizzly bear, and your body craves movement, even through the winter months. Here are seven ways you can stay active while you wait for the spring thaw. (All calorie counts calculated for a 150pound person and are approximate.)

1. Shoveling snow

Take advantage of the next blizzard by leaving your snow thrower in the basement and grabbing your shovel for a little goodold-fashioned winter workout.

Shoveling snow burns upwards of 400 calories an hour, depending on how much you weigh and how hard you’re working. That’s nothing to shake a snowflake at!

2. Ice skating

Grab some friends or your family, bundle up in scarves, mittens, and hats, and hit the local ice skating rink. In a rink or on a pond — make sure that ice is thick, now — ice skating burns 390 calories an hour.

3. Cross country skiing

The world looks different when it’s covered in snow. See for yourself when you rent some cross country skis and poles. Dress in layers, starting with sweat-wicking fabrics close to your skin and layering warm wool or technical fabrics on top for ultimate warmth

and comfort, but be sure you can move.

Cross country skiing is one of the most intense winter workouts. Even at a slow pace, you’ll burn 500 calories an hour. Phew!

4. Mall walking

If mall walking conjures up images of retired folks walking a fast heel-toe glide in sensible footwear, think again. The next time you’re snowbound, it’s too cold to play outside, and your house full of kids are practicing their outdoor voices, mall walking could save your sanity.

Strap the smallest kids in a stroller and hit the mallways. Many malls have mallwalking programs and open for walkers before the stores are open.

5. Roller skating

Indoor roller skating rinks have been around for decades…and it’s been decades since many of us have been back to one! But when you want to have fun and get moving without bundling up for the cold, a roller skating rink is a great option for the whole family and won’t break the bank.

6. Chopping firewood

Oh, the rustic beauty of it: wind blowing the snow off the trees, the silence as nature sleeps — and the occasional chop, chop of your hatchet as you cut wood for the fire, your breath puffing up in the cold.

Chopping firewood burns almost 300 calories an hour.

7. Snowshoeing

Want to go (almost literally) anywhere you feel like in the forest? Buy or rent a pair of snowshoes and forge your own trails. Snowshoeing is one of the best ways to feel like winter is fun, especially when you’re coasting lightly across the top of deep snow. As a bonus, it’s an excellent way to keep your physical and mental spirits up. Even on an easy tromp, snowshoeing burns around 400 calories per hour.

With all these ways to stay active, there’s no reason to hibernate with the bears this winter. Keep it up and you’ll emerge in the spring feeling and looking great!
