521 AMOW hosts Mobility Rodeo

The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing hosted its first Mobility Rodeo at Ramstein Air Base, July 11-12, for nearly 120 U.S. and Dutch mobility professionals across the U.S., Europe and the Middle East.

The Mobility Rodeo coincided with the wing’s 15th anniversary and tested mobility Airmen, including a Royal Netherlands Air Force team and Polish observers, on Ready Airman Training, aerial port and functional aircraft maintenance tasks over the course of two days to enhance home-station and deployed readiness.

“The Mobility Rodeo is an extension of the traditional Port Dawg Rodeo,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Virginia Walsh, Mobility Rodeo boss and 721st Aerial Port Squadron Combat Readiness and Resources Flight commander. “As the air transportation hub in See MOBILITY RODEO, Page 2

Europe, we interact a lot with our allies and partners which we have seen in recent global contingencies. Extending the rodeo to them shows the interconnectedness we have [as NATO allies].”

Rodeos, traditionally called Port Dawg Rodeos, date back more than 60 years and provide a venue for friendly competition between aerial port Airmen in addition to certifying them on occupational tasks. This year, the 521st AMOW has evolved the event to include 25 teams from 13 different bases with Airmen spanning aerial port, maintenance, command and control, contingency response and vehicle readiness career fields.

The 521st AMOW hosted the 2022 Port Dawg Rodeo one year prior at Ramstein AB with 10 teams.

“This Rodeo in particular happens to fall on our 15th anniversary so there is an obvious connection to our heritage,” said Col. Dan Cooley, 521st AMOW commander. “Sixty-six years ago is when Rodeos started and we are continuing to honor that tradition.”

Rodeo participants were tested on their Ready Airman Training skill-sets, such as Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Training; Tactical Combat Casualty Care; and a 436th Security

Participating Teams:

“All the teams here are focused on being war-ready Airman, which is a great tie to Mobility Guardian,” Cooley said. “It is incredibly important to include our allies and partners in events like these. Together, they are learning tactics, techniques and procedures because Mobility Guardian, much like a future potential conflict, does not confine to the lines on a map.”

Mobility Guardian 2023 is Air Mobility Command’s premier exercise demonstrating the command’s capability to quickly mobilize and deploy forces, despite kinetic and non-kinetic attack and disruption, to sustain a high-intensity joint force operational tempo.

“The Rodeo is something we want to put our best effort toward and see if we can compete at the level the Air Force wants us to compete,” said Senior Airman Joshua Hodge, 728th Air Mobility Squadron avionics maintenance technician from Incirlik Air Base, Türkiye. “Our team is hoping to at

least place [first, second or third] this year. This competition demonstrates the Air Force’s ability to come together from all across the globe to come together in one location and demonstrate our technical, physical and mental abilities.”

Hodge’s team, the Olympians, went on to place third place in the Ready Airman Training and aircraft maintenance events.

The teams then focused on

their specific career field tasks on day two. These events included a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft nose tire change, 10K forklift obstacle course, pallet build up and more. The 521st AMOW was able to use the Rodeo as more than an opportunity to host the friendly competition and celebrate the wing’s anniversary. The Rodeo also served as a certifying event for Exercise Mobility Guardian 2023.

The 305th Aerial Port Squadron from Joint Base McGuire-DixLakehurst, New Jersey, earned first place for the first day of Ready Airman Training events. The 725th Air Mobility Squadron from Naval Station Rota, Spain, earned first place during the maintenance events on day two, while the 721st APS took home the trophy for the aerial port events.

AAFES is this customer’s first choice

In my 28 years of service in the United States military, I’ve been a Marine, a Soldier, and a global traveler. I’ve seen the serene landscapes of Japan, experienced the war-torn regions of Iraq and Afghanistan, and walked the historic terrains of Germany and Poland. Amidst these diverse experiences, one constant companion has been the Army & Air Force Exchange Service.

AAFES, our unsung hero, has been more than just a provider of goods and services. It has been a slice of home in foreign lands, a morale booster in challenging times, and a lifeline that bridged the miles between us and our loved ones. Yet, the true depth of AAFES’s impact and the breadth of its support often remain underappreciated.

I want to shed light on the critical role of AAFES, drawing from my personal experiences and those of my comrades. I will explore the history and mission of AAFES, delve into the diverse ways it supports deployed Service Members, and share personal anecdotes that highlight the difference AAFES has made in our lives. I will also examine the challenges AAFES faces and how it navigates these obstacles, all while maintaining its unwavering support for U.S Armed Forces Service Members and families.

Looking toward the future, I will share the ongoing initiatives and potential improvements in AAFES’s support for our deployed heroes. Through these insights, I hope to help others comprehensively understand AAFES’s role as an unseen hero in our military, and highlight its invaluable contribution to our nation’s defense.

Background

AAFES has been steadfast throughout my military career. However, its roots extend far beyond my personal experience, reaching back to the 19th century. Founded on July 25, 1895, when the War Department issued General Order No. 46, AAFES was directed to establish an exchange at every post. This historic mandate marked the inception of what would grow into a global operation, serving military personnel and their families in more than 30 countries, five U.S. territories, and all 50 states.

AAFES is more than just a retailer. It’s a non-appropriated fund entity of the Department of Defense. Its dual mission is to provide quality merchandise and services to its customers at competitive prices and generate earnings that supplement military morale, welfare, and recreation programs. This unique model allows AAFES to give

back nearly two-thirds of its profits to the military community.

Throughout my 28 years of service, I’ve witnessed how AAFES continually adapts to meet the changing needs of Service Members. From the bustling PowerZones filled with the latest electronics to the Express locations providing quick essentials, AAFES has always offered comfort and familiarity, no matter where the Army sends me.

Role of AAFES in supporting deployed service members

Transitioning from the general background of AAFES, it’s essential to highlight its specific role in supporting deployed Service Members. When you’re thousands of miles away from home, deployed in unfamiliar territory, even the smallest reminders of home can make a world of difference. This is where AAFES shines. Their mission goes beyond just providing goods and services; they offer a slice of home, a morale boost, and a lifeline that often bridges the miles between us and our loved ones.

AAFES was more than just a place to pick up necessities during my deployments. It was where I could grab a cup of coffee that tasted just like it would back home, pick up a magazine or book to escape into for a while, or find a gift to send back to my family. These moments of normalcy, provided by AAFES, were invaluable amidst the often chaotic and stressful deployment environment.

AAFES plays a crucial role in maintaining the morale of deployed Service Members. They often organize events and activities that provide much-needed entertainment and relaxation. I recall times when AAFES would bring in popular American entertainers for concerts and shows, which were always a big hit among us Service Members.

In addition to supporting me as a Service Member, AAFES also extends support to the families of deployed Service Members. Families can send care packages to their loved ones overseas through their online and catalog services. I can’t overstate the joy and comfort of receiving a package from home filled with your favorite snacks, a new book, or personal care items.

In essence, AAFES is a comforting presence in the often challenging deployment environment, providing not just material goods but emotional support and a connection to home.

Case studies of AAFES support

Throughout my deployments, I’ve had numerous encounters with AAFES that underscored their commitment to supporting Service Members. To illustrate the profound impact AAFES has on our lives while deployed, I’d like to

share a few of these experiences.

One of the most memorable experiences was during Operation Iraqi Freedom-1. I was deployed to Balad, Iraq, as the support operations officer for transportation for the 7th Corps Support Group. In the summer of 2003, I had the unique opportunity to assist in bringing the first AAFES to Balad. This was no small feat given the challenging circumstances, but the importance of providing a touch of home to our Service Members was a powerful motivator. The opening of this AAFES location was a significant morale boost for everyone in the area — I still remember the candy bar and soda I enjoyed.

However, we didn’t stop there. We also laid the groundwork for opening the “Reel Time” Theater in Balad. Although the theater opened two months after I redeployed from Iraq, knowing I had a hand in creating a space where my fellow Service Members could relax and enjoy a movie was incredibly rewarding.

During my time in Afghanistan and Japan, AAFES was a constant presence, providing everything from holiday meals and decorations to a mix of local and American goods. AAFES’s efforts helped lift our spirits and give a sense of normalcy in otherwise challenging environments.

These are just a few examples of how AAFES has supported me and my fellow Service Members during our deployments. Each of these experiences underscores the invaluable role AAFES plays in our lives, providing goods and services and a sense of home and normalcy, no matter where we are in the world.

Challenges and innovative solutions: The AAFES story

The task of providing support to deployed Service Members around the world is not a simple one. AAFES encounters a unique set of challenges in fulfilling its mission, which includes

just a form of currency, but also a form of expression and a memento of service.

Despite the challenges, AAFES remains committed to its mission of serving those who serve our country. Their unwavering dedication is a testament to their role as an unseen hero in our military, providing muchappreciated support to our deployed Service Members.

The future of AAFES and ongoing initiatives

logistical obstacles and the necessity to adapt to the diverse needs of Service Members in various locations.

A significant challenge lies in the logistics of establishing and maintaining AAFES locations in remote and often volatile regions. I had a firsthand experience of this when we set up the first AAFES in Balad, Iraq. The logistics of ensuring the safe transport of goods, creating the necessary infrastructure, and maintaining a steady supply chain in a war zone required meticulous planning and coordination.

Despite these hurdles, AAFES has consistently risen to the occasion, demonstrating remarkable resilience and adaptability. They have devised innovative solutions to these challenges, including robust logistics strategies. By leveraging military transport capabilities, they have established efficient supply chains, ensuring that Service Members can access the goods and services they need, regardless of their deployment location.

One of their most innovative solutions is the introduction of AAFES POGs. These lightweight cardboard discs were introduced as a form of currency in overseas military bases, primarily as a practical solution to the high cost and weight of shipping traditional metal coins.

The first AAFES POGs were introduced in November 2001 at U.S. facilities in Afghanistan. Initially, these POGs were intended to be a temporary fix and carried only basic information identifying their face value. However, over the years, they evolved into something much more significant.

POGs began to feature a variety of designs, transforming from simple currency into collectibles. Some POGs depicted images of troops, aircraft, and even comic book characters. There were even POGs featuring NASCAR drivers, reflecting the diverse interests of our Service Members.

This evolution added a personal touch to the POGs, making them not

As we look towards the future, AAFES continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of Service Members. Their commitment to serving those who serve our country remains steadfast, and they are constantly seeking ways to improve and expand their services.

Now that I find myself back overseas, I am once again reminded of the importance of AAFES, not just to me but also to my wife and two children. AAFES services and products provide a sense of familiarity and comfort that is invaluable when you’re far from home.

One location that stands out, particularly, is the AAFES at Ramstein. The scale and variety of goods and services available are truly impressive, reflecting the dedication of AAFES to cater to the diverse needs of Service Members and their families. It’s a testament to how far AAFES has come since its inception and a promising indicator of its future direction.

Conclusion: The unseen heroes

Looking ahead, I am confident that AAFES will continue to evolve and adapt to meet the changing needs of Service Members and their families. Their commitment to service, innovative solutions to unique challenges, and unwavering dedication to supporting our military community make them an integral part of our military experience.

As I stand in the impressive AAFES at Ramstein with my family, I am reminded of the journey we’ve all been on. I am reminded of the countless ways AAFES has supported us and am filled with gratitude. For every cup of coffee before a mission, every holiday celebration in a war zone, every POG used as currency, and every moment of rest in their facilities, I owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who contributes to the AAFES mission, our unseen heroes.

Reflecting on my 28 years of service, it’s clear that AAFES has been a constant presence, providing invaluable support no matter where I found myself. They are the unseen heroes who serve those who serve our country, and for that, we are eternally grateful.

Sacred Search: Operation Colony Glacier

The 52 service members who died in a Nov. 22, 1952, plane crash on Mount Gannett, Alaska, were never forgotten — but for more than 60 years, their loved ones had no remains to grieve over or bury.

That changed after an Alaska National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk crew conducting routine training in 2012 spotted aircraft wreckage on Colony Glacier. Recovery operations confirmed it was debris from the Air Force C-124 that crashed six decades earlier with 42 Airmen, eight Soldiers, one Marine and one Sailor on board.

Every summer since, service members have searched the area in an effort to find the remains of the crash victims, identify them and bring them home.

The mission, Operation Colony Glacier, continued this June, with a team of military and civilian personnel working to uphold the nation’s

sacred pledge to leave no service member behind.

The icy terrain, unpredictable weather and constantly changing nature of the glacier require careful planning for the operation and special training and expertise for its participants.

In addition to possible remains, they search for flight equipment and personal effects.

In 2014, the Defense Department announced 17 of the lost service members had been identified and would be returned to their families for burial with full military honors. By June 2017, the number of those identified was 37.

As of June of last year, the operation’s 10th anniversary, 44 of the 52 service members had been recovered and identified.

After team members inventory the items found each year, military honor guard members conduct an honorable carry and honorable departure for the remains, which are escorted to Dover Air Force Base, Del., for identification.

KC-135 serves as platform for multiple missions over Germany, Netherlands

Aeromedical Evacuation technicians with the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron assigned to Ramstein Air Base sharpened their skills during a routine refueling flight in a KC-135 Stratotanker assigned to the 93rd Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron, June 27, over the skies of Germany and the Netherlands.

The 86th AES provides critical medical care to forces operating throughout Europe and Africa. They are responsible for treating patients for a variety of illnesses and injuries, using assessment skills during contingency operations to save life and limb, and providing essential care to patients of all ages.

“We are that segment between transporting patients from one place to another while still giving them the care they need,” said Capt. Jordan Klein, 86th AES flight nurse. “If we couldn’t be there for them, they are more likely to undergo harm that could have been otherwise preventable.”

The mission of the Air Force Aeromedical Evacuation system is to provide time-sensitive, missioncritical care to patients being transported between medical treatment facilities. AE forces operate anywhere air operations occur in support of the full range of military operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

“In-flight training ultimately makes us more prepared for future fights and anything we may see or experience with a patient,” Klein said. “We don’t always have the ability to fly on the KC-135, so building a cohesive working relationship with the 93rd EARS is

definitely important to us.”

AE crews execute patient movement primarily on Mobility Air Forces aircraft, including the C-130J Super Hercules, C-21 Learjet, C-17 Globemaster III and the KC-135.

“If we are the only jet available to medically evacuate a patient, our job as boom operators gain more responsibility,” said Senior Airman Carson Wilberg, 93rd EARS boom operator.

“Everything from the beginning of the flight to the end becomes a collaborative effort, so it’s really important for us to understand what roles we can fill and how we can help our AE guys out.”

The KC-135 flew above northeastern Europe to conduct routine refueling for Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16s and F-35s from Volkel Air Base, Netherlands. Together, the flight enabled the training missions of the 86th AES, 93rd EARS and the RNLAF.

“As the aircraft commander, I’m in charge of essentially the wellbeing of the jet and everyone on board,” said Capt. Nathan Armes, 93rd EARS KC-135 pilot. “It’s my job to maintain a smooth, steady aircraft so the medical team can accomplish their mission as we accomplish ours.”

When the boom operators weren’t refueling aircraft, the 86th AES team was busy practicing various medical scenarios they may encounter, such as mental health care, musculoskeletal injuries, anaphylactic reactions and other patient emergencies.

“Running through these training scenarios helps us learn what to do during potentially stressful situations,” said Senior Airman Zachary Vedder, 86th AES aerospace medical technician. “Being able to manage stress is really important because we need to be able to make quick decisions to ultimately save a life. ”

USAG RP intern shares passion for educating customers

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

When Michael Kah heard about the opportunity to become a host nation occupational safety and health specialist at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, he didn’t hesitate.

Currently an intern with the Safety and Occupational Health Division, Kah has worked with the U.S. Army for over 20 years.

“I began my career in 2002 with the 6981st Civilian Support Group, 2nd Signal Brigade, in Mannheim, Germany, as a telecommunication lines installer and later installer foreman,” Kah said. “Next, I became a technical supply technician in the Supply Section, got promoted to technical supply chief, and finally took over the lead as chief S4, with the additional responsibilities for the procurement of all installation material for customer projects.”

Kah also served over 13 years as a unit safety officer and responsible point of contact for Unfallversicherung Bund und Bahn (UVB), an insurance firm that specializes in accident coverage and that is offered to local national employees.

On April 15, 2021, his journey with the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz safety office began in Kaiserslautern. He started a training program at the Institute for Work and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IAG) in Dresden and is on track to receive his final certification in March 2024. At that time, he will be permanently placed in the position of safety and occupational health specialist.

“This program gave me the opportunity to grow up and gain experience in all related fields of safety,” Kah said. “I am very proud I was selected for this apprenticeship, and I am grateful for the opportunity to grow my knowledge on the safety laws and regulations in place at USAG Rheinland-Pfalz.”

Kah first heard about the Apprenticeship Program through his former supervisor, Werner Hermes, who at the time was the safety manager for the U.S. Installation Management Command-Europe. He later was told to contact Daniel Nagel, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Works Council chairman, to get more information and apply for the position.

“Without Mr. Nagel’s initiative to establish a training program, I would probably not have my current job,” Kah said. “Mr. Nagel’s work contributes enormously to make the USAGRheinland-Pfalz fit for the future and to open new paths. His work and personal commitment in this area is unparalleled.”

“When one of our safety positions became vacant, we took the opportunity to train an internal host nation safety specialist,” said Nagel.

“We sat down with the insurance company UVB and discussed the possibility for Mr. Kah to become a certified local national safety specialist. They supported our idea and offered to finance all training costs of approximately 50,000 Euro,” he said. “And here at the garrison we would have the opportunity to train someone in occupational health and safety to meet our needs.

“We are looking to possibly hire two additional local national safety specialists in the future,” Nagel added.

In his current position, Kah provides guidance, recommendations, advice, and assistance regarding both U.S. and local national SOH issues to commanders, managers, supervisors, employees, contractors and tenants associated with the Garrison.

Some of the other duties he performs include accident prevention and control, accident investigation reporting and analysis, elimination of environmental hazards, and safety education and promotion. He also prepares and evaluates reports, presenting findings to management along with recommendations on correction of environmental, mechanical, electrical, physical, and/or ergonomic standards.

Kah said his biggest achievement so far was the ability to build great relationships with his customers and provide them with all the information they need.

“The contact with our customers and the great garrison family give me every day a good feeling about what I do to provide a safe work environment,” he said. “It’s a pleasure to explain to the community what we do and why we do it — and how safety rules and procedures are in place to help everyone stay safe and healthy!”

According to Kah, the Apprenticeship Program is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to start a new career.

“Interns gain experience, professionalism and knowledge to advance in a particular field,” Kah said. “Sometimes it’s not easy, but in the end, you will be a specialist in what you are doing, use your knowledge, and pass it on to other people. I’m proud to be here and to be a part of this great team.”

Hailing from Asheboro, North Carolina, Rodney is the Plans and Operations officer for Baumholder and is part of the directorate of plans, training, mobilization and security.

Aside from day-to-day operations and periodically driving to headquarters on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Rodney directs, coordinates and synchronizes installation operations at the Baumholder Military Community.

Rodney has been working for USAG RheinlandPfalz for one year and has had 3 years of being a federal employee. He had also been on active-duty status for 32 years.

“I enjoy bringing members of the community-stakeholders, mission partners and tenant organizations together to solve problems, provide solutions and improve our support to the community.”

Soldiers not immune to damage of sun’s rays

Some soldiers have a greater risk for developing skin cancer than others. For July’s UV Safety Awareness month, soldiers should be aware of their risks and how to reduce their chances of skin cancer.

Cancer, including skin cancer, is one of various chronic diseases monitored in the active-duty Army population in the Army Public Health Center's annual Health of the Force report. Skin cancer is an especially preventable disease because ultraviolet radiation exposure — mostly from the sun and tanning beds — is the primary cause.

The National Institutes of Health divides skin cancer into two groups: melanoma and non-melanoma.

Melanoma is the least common but most serious form of skin cancer. Most skin cancer deaths are caused by melanoma, which can occur anywhere on the body, including areas that are never exposed to ultraviolet radiation. If not treated in time, melanomas are likely to spread to other parts of the body.

Non-melanoma skin cancers include basal cell and squamous cell. These forms of skin cancer are much more common but less severe. They typically occur on areas of the body that have been exposed to UV radiation.

The damage caused by UV radiation builds over time, so more frequent exposures during a lifetime will increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Evidence also suggests that shorter intermittent periods of high-intensity exposures – such as during military deployments to areas of intense sunlight – may be especially dangerous.

Based on the Health of the Force analysis, “Cancer diagnoses are actually relatively rare in our active-duty force,” says Dr. Alexis Maule, an APHC senior epidemiologist. “This is expected in a youngerage population.”

Rare incidence of skin cancer may not be the case as a soldier ages, however. A scientific review published in the June 2018 Journal

of the American Academy of Dermatology identified “an abundance of evidence for an increased risk for skin cancer development among U.S. veteran populations.”

“While skin cancer may not be a concern to you during your activeduty years, some of your most serious sun exposures may occur as a soldier,” says Dr. Chip McCannon, a medical doctor and retired Navy preventive medicine officer working for the APHC’s Clinical Public Health and Epidemiology Directorate. “To reduce your risk of developing this serious health condition after you’ve separated or retired from military service, you should minimize your UV exposures while you’re younger.”

According to the National Cancer Institute of the NIH, skin cancers are among the top five forms of cancer experienced in the United States. The risks are highest among white males over 50 years of age, the average age being 65 years.

Since outdoor work has been associated with higher risk of exposure to UV radiation, occupations such as construction workers, farmers, lifeguards, and even postal workers are among those who have been found to have higher skin cancer risk.

The review of skin cancer

among military personnel found that due to periodic deployments to locations of intense UV radiation exposure, service members may be in an even higher risk category than occupations where regular daily sun exposure occurs.

For example, during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, personnel were often deployed multiple times, with average lengths of deployment ranging from 4.5 months for the Army to 9.4 months for the Air Force. The intensity and repeated nature of UV exposure during these deployments could pose a greater risk of the development of melanoma or non-melanoma skin cancer among deployed service members.

The review concluded that for many service members who had worked in high-UV-exposure environments, sun protection had not been a priority. Immediate operational and combat safety concerns took precedence. Findings also noted the inability to avoid peak sunlight hours during missions; continued exposure to highly reflective surfaces, such as sand; little to no emphasis on sun protection; and limited access to sunscreen.

While the APHC provides Army guidance for reducing sun exposures, everyone should aim to reduce overall UV exposures by –

• Never using tanning beds.

• Minimizing exposure to intense outdoor UV radiation by exercis-

ing indoors or exercising in the early morning or late evening.

• Wearing clothing as a barrier to skin exposed to sunlight.

• Wearing hats (ideally widebrimmed).

• Wearing sunglasses.

• Regularly using sunscreen with SPF 30 or above and reapplying it at least every 2 hours or after the skin has been wet. Apply sunscreen to exposed areas such as your face, neck, hands, and arms. Remember that UV exposure can be from reflective surfaces, such as snow, water, and sand; and UV rays can reach you on cloudy days, too.

McCannon says that in addition to the risk from UV radiation, it’s important to be aware of personal characteristics that may increase your risk, such as being light-skinned, having had a serious blistering sunburn or multiple sunburns in the past, or if you or a family member has had skin cancer previously. Men are at potentially higher risk because they use sunscreen less, are less likely to have their skin checked, and may experience longer exposure durations while participating in outdoor recreational and occupational activities.

The U.S. Preventive Medicine Task Force does not consider annual medical skin cancer screening examinations necessary for all adults, but since some U.S. military

personnel have been found to have higher rates of skin cancer than civilians, soldiers with additional risk factors should talk about their skin health with their healthcare provider. This is especially important if you notice a new or changing mole or unusual spot on the skin.

The good news is that with early detection, skin cancers can be treated. The Veterans Administration offers tips on what to look for and when to seek medical attention. This can be found at https://www. va.gov/WHOLEHEALTHLIBRARY/ tools/skin-cancer.asp.

Remember to protect your skin daily — not just in summer but throughout the year.

The U.S. Army Public Health Center focuses on promoting healthy people, communities, animals, and workplaces through the prevention of disease, injury, and disability of Soldiers, retirees, family members, veterans, Army civilian employees, and animals through population-based monitoring, investigations, and technical consultations.

Begin at Marktplatz

The Bremer Markplatz is the ideal spot to commence any Bremen exploration. It’s a vibrant, massive, sprawling, cobblestoned plaza that is surrounded by gorgeous buildings.

One of those buildings is the legendary Rathaus, or city hall. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rathaus is an architectural marvel. The best part? The Rathaus hosts an amazing restaurant — the Bremen Ratskeller — in the basement. It’s more than six centuries old, contains hundreds of types of German wine, has vaulted ceilings and ornate wood carvings, and the food is good.

St. Peter’s Cathedral also anchors the Marktplatz. Host to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, this is no ordinary church. Visitors can climb the huge towers (be forewarned: steps are involved), visit the cathedral museum, or see the special ‘mummies’ in the basement.

No visit to the Marktplatz would be complete without a quick look at the statue of the Bremen Town Musicians, the famous characters from the Grimm Brothers’ tale. Legend has it that gripping the donkey’s two front legs brings good luck!

Quarters and more

If you leave the Marktplatz and wander toward the Weser River, you will find yourself smack-dab in the middle of the Schnoor quarter. It’s like walking back in time. Schnoor is packed with winding, narrow cobblestone lanes, beautiful shops with hanging signs that seem straight from a Harry Potter movie, and incredible half-

timbered houses. Even in a country where medieval chic seems commonplace, the Schnoor quarter will amaze you.

While you’re there, don’t miss the Böttcherstrasse. Derived from the German name for cooper (böttcher, or one who makes barrels), it’s one of the best little streets in Bremen, and is home to many crafts shops and art studios.

The Viertel (which literally means ‘the Quarter’) is also outstanding, and has a completely different feel than the old city center. This is where the modern city comes alive – all with a very ‘Bremen’ feel. The Viertel has restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, and a large variety of independent stores. And there is music. So much music. Because, after all, music is one of the things that makes Bremen famous.

A city of culture

While in the Viertel, visitors can find all the culture they want. The city’s Kunsthalle is a smashing art museum, and very accessible. It contains works from modern artists like Munch and Picasso, classic paintings from Dürer and Rubens, and many, many others.

The Gerhard Marcks House is also well worth a visit. It’s a sculpture museum, and a very beautiful one at that. The museum takes its name from Marcks, who was a famous 20th century German sculptor, and it houses hundreds of his works. But it also contains other fascinating pieces from across the world.

Location, location, location

Bremen was once a member of the

famous Hanseatic League, and its maritime past (and past wealth) is evident even today. Bremen’s location also means that visitors are just a short trip away from the North Sea coast, which can be particularly lovely during spring, summer, and autumn.

The city is also ideally located for a number of other attractions — including amusement parks. For families, Bremen is close to both Magic Park Verden (ideal for younger children) and the Heide Park Resort (which is awesome for thrill seekers of all ages).

Getting there

By car, Bremen is approximately 5 hours from Kaiserslautern or Wiesbaden, and 6.5 hours from Stuttgart. Please check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.

ABC IN KMC: Wasser marsch!

86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Walking around downtown Kaiserslautern, you’ve probably noted a number of fountains. Some rather simple, others more elegant, but all offering sprinkling water for a cool refreshment during sunny summer temperatures. Did you know that there are 41 fountains within the whole city? Sixteen of them are in the city center and the remaining 25 in different city sections.

The most prominent and wellknown is the Kaisersbrunnen located at Mainzer Tor at the end of Steinstrasse. It was designed by Gernot Rumpf and opened in 1987. The bronze figures depict significant characteristics of the city, such as Emperor Barbarossa, the Opel works, emigrants on their way to the New World and a soccer ball signed by legendary Fritz Walter.

A further fountain designed in a more romantic style with swans is the centerpiece of entertainment at Martinsplatz (pic-

tured right). Built in 1893 it was first named Fontäne Brunnen, then changed to Serenade Fountain and has been called Martinsbrunnen since 1976.

A smaller sandstone structure is to be found in front of Stiftskirche and the picturesque nostalgic Apotheke. The fountain was first mentioned as “Schöner Brunnen” (beautiful fountain) in 1571. Just around the corner at Schillerplatz you’ll find a more modern structure, with metal pipes and recently reburbished, it is one of kids’ favorite places to splash on hot summer days.

A drinking fountain, run by the city works in Kaiserslautern, is located at the end of Kerstrasse and marks the western end of Kaiserslautern’s city limits during the Middle Ages.

The Fackelwoog-Brunnen was relocated from about where the K-in-Lautern mall is today and transported to the park in front of the former castle and city hall. The Albrechtbrunnen close to Waldschlösschen (today’s Philipp-Mees-Platz) didn’t have

a name until 1895. It was later named after King Albrecht who gave Kaiserslautern its city forest in 1303. In 1911 the fountain was equipped with the figure of a boy with a pig and received the nickname “Pig’s fountain.”

Another bubbling spring that is not so well known is the Kennedy fountain, located at the square with the same name. It was installed in 1954, formerly known as the Altenwoog-Brunnen, whose copper basin was melted down during World War II.

The last of the inner-city fountains that does not have a name is situated at Davenport Platz close to the university. The square was named after Kaiserslautern’s sister city Davenport, Iowa, and was installed in 1993. Other fountains are located in the city’s seven sections and ready for you to discover on your own and maybe inspire you to a fountain scavenger hunt. But in any case, it’s time to get out and enjoy some “Wasser marsch!” (water march) as Germans say when turning on a hose.
